Herbal Ashwagandha Eradicates Stomach/Gastric Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach formed part of the digestive system that receives food from the esophagus before passing them to the small intestine is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen.

The stomach is the first line of food digestive by secreting acid and enzymes.

Gastric/Stomach cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue before penetrating deeper into to other layers of the stomach to form a tumor,  due to the alternation of DNA.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of gastric cancer. However, researchers do know the increase in age, gender, ethnicity, geography, Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and poor diet are some prevalent factors found in patients with the disease.

At the later stage, the large tumor size may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to internal bleeding and severe pain. Also, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a secondary metastasis that develops in the liver (48%), peritoneum (32%), lung (15%), and bone (12%).

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 26,240 new cases of gastric cancer were diagnosed (16,520 in men and 9,720 in women), and gastric cancer caused the death of 10,800 people including 6,510 men and 4,290 women.

The 5 years survival rate of localized gastric cancer is 67%, compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Although there are many risk factors involved the onset of gastric cancer, epidemiologically, some researchers suggested the change of diet may prevent the onset of gastric cancer.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, by reducing the list below in your diet, gastric cancer may be preventable.

"Alcoholic drinks: Consumption of alcoholic drinks is probably a cause of stomach cancer. This is based on evidence for intakes greater than 45 grams per day (about 3 drinks a day).

Foods preserved by salting: Consumption of foods preserved by salting is probably a cause of stomach cancer.

Processed meat: Consumption of processed meat is probably a cause of non-cardia cancer.

Grilled (broiled) or barbecued (charbroiled) meat The evidence suggesting that consumption of grilled (broiled) and barbecued (charbroiled) meat increase the risk of stomach cancer is limited.

Low fruit intake: The evidence suggesting that low intake of fruit increases the risk of stomach cancer is limited.

Citrus fruit: The evidence suggesting that consumption of citrus fruit decreases the risk of cardia cancer is limited".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A (WA), derived from Withania somnifera on anti colon cancer activity.

On AGS cells. WA at a dose-dependent exerted a strong cytotoxic effect on cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase.

Furthermore, WA also exhibited the expression of proteins associated with the promotion of AGS cancer cells apoptosis.

Moreover, treatment with WA also inhibited the metastatic ability of cancer cell line by decreasing in the migration and invasion potency.

Dr. Kim J. after taking into account of other co and confound wrote, "WA directly inhibits the proliferation and metastatic activity of gastric cancer cells, and suggest that WA may be developed as a drug for the treatment of gastric cancer".

In Helicobacter pylori infection-induced gastric cancer, WA also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β involved in tumor initiation and progression by blocking the activation of sensor component of the NLRP3 inflammasome associated with the innate immunity in the inflammatory response.

In other words, WA protects the integrity of the dendritic cells by inhibiting IL-1β production by H. pylori in the induction of gastric cancer.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the results from larger sample size and multicenter study.

Healthy Eating, Navy Bean Inhibits the Initiation and Progression of Colon Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of disease associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Compared to normal cells with a limit cell cycle division before replacing by a set of new cells, malignant cells have an unlimited cycle division. In other words, cancerous cells ignore cell division inhibitors.

Primary colon cancer is a medical condition caused by abnormal cell growth in the colon tissue. Most cases of colon cancer begin on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the colon, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can dispatch from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs far the way from the colon, leading to secondary metastasis.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. researchers do not know why people with the same health condition, family history, and diet, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

According to the statistic, colorectal cancer(cancer that starts in the colon or rectum is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States.

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance suggested, on average, the lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is about one in 23 for men and women combined (4.5%), however, this varies widely according to individual risk factors.

Out of many risk factor associated with the onset of colon cancer, some researchers suggested that the risk of colon cancer may have a direct implication from the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades

Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman wrote, "Whether red meat is a culprit in causing CRC remains unanswered, although any effect it might have is likely moderate and related to processing or cooking"

And "The effect of dietary fiber on the risk of CRC has also been difficult to determine because fiber intake is generally low. Evidence that folic acid, calcium, and vitamin D reduce the risk of CRC is stronger"

These results strongly suggested that by reducing intake of red meat and processed foods, and increasing intake of nutrients from the fruits and vegetable including folic calcium and vitamin D, the risk of colorectal cancer can be substantially decreased.

However, in the study conducted by the team lead by Dr. Dana-Farber, Cancer Center oncologist Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD appeared in the Aug. 15 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Western diet not only associate to the colon cancer risk but also elevate the risk of recurrent colon cancer in colon cancer patients.

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find a natural and dietary compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers examined the effects of navy beans on mice induced colon cancer.

The study included cooked navy beans (whole beans), the insoluble fraction (bean residue) or soluble fraction of the 60% (vol:vol) ethanol extract of cooked navy beans (bean extract), or a modified AIN-93G diet (16.6% fat including 12.9% lard) as control fed to 160 male obese ob/ob mice after 2 azoxymethane injections.

According to the tested assays mice fed with navy beans showed a reduction of dysplasia, adenomas, or adenocarcinomas in fewer mice compared to control.

More precisely, whole beans 54%, P=0.10; bean residue 81%, P=0.003; bean extract 91%, P=0.007), inhibited all types of colon lesions, including focal hyperplasia compared to control.

Based on the finding researchers wrote, "suggest that both the soluble and the insoluble fraction of the extract contribute to the cancer-protective effect of cooked navy beans".

In order to reveal additional information about navy bean anti-colon cancer activity, researchers evaluated whether black beans and/or navy beans would reduce colon carcinogenesis in rats.

The study included rats fed a modified AIN-93G diet (control) or diets containing 75% black beans or 75% navy beans for 4 wk before colon cancer was initiated by the administration of two injections of azoxymethane 1 wk apart.

At the 31 wk after the second injection, the incidence of colon adenocarcinomas was significantly lower in navy bean (14%) diets compared to rats fed the black bean (9%) diets and control diet (36%).

Futhermore, total tumor multiplicity was also significantly lower in rats fed the navy bean (1.0) diets compared to black bean (1.1) and control diet (2.2).

Based on the additional analysis, researchers found that the 44-75% reduction in colon carcinogenesis in rats fed beans was attributed to more controlled appetites and much greater concentrations of butyrate in the distal colon.

The results strongly suggested eating....navy beans significantly lowered colon cancer incidence and multiplicity.

Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study. larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Curcuma Oil Isolated from Turmeric, A Natural Prevention and Treatment of Insulin Resistance

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin resistance is a condition that the signals sent out by hormone insulin were ignored by the cells in your muscles, body fat and liver.

In other words, your cells in the body are no longer respond to the insulin produced by the body to convert the glucose into energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

The condition can induce more and more production of insulin hormone. Over time, the syndrome can cause overwork of the beta cells in the pancreas that no longer keep up with the demand for insulin, leading to the onset of diabetes.

Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type II diabetes, accompanied by the hallmark of hyperglycemia.

The causes of insulin resistance may be associated with beta cell gradually died off or insulin receptor sites clogged up with fat and cholesterol.

According to the statistics, approximately, one in three Americans are living with insulin resistance, including half of those age 60 and older.

The exact causes of insulin resistance are unidentified. Aging and ethnicity, excess body weight, too much fat on the belly, physical inactivity, and smoking are some prevalent factors of the condition.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the culprit for the widespread insulin resistance in the West.

Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist at the University of California San Diego said, "the Western diets commonly used in LDLR-/- mice may not only induce atherosclerosis, but also IR, potentially complicating the interpretation of results".

And, "LDLR-/- mice may be used as models to elucidate the effect of IR on atherosclerosis, eg, by feeding them Western diets with or without insulin-sensitizing agents".

The results strongly suggested if you follow the Western diet pattern, you are at a higher risk of insulin resistance compared to people who follow the traditional diet.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance (IR) evaluated the effect of Curcuma oil (C. oil) isolated from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) in animal models of diet-induced insulin resistance.

The study included
* Male Golden Syrian hamsters on high fructose diet (HFr) for 12 wk were treated orally with vehicle, fenofibrate (30 mg/kg) or C. oil (300 mg/kg) for four weeks.

* Wistar rats fed HFr for 12 wk treated orally with C. oil (300 mg/kg) for two weeks.

During the experiment, researchers found that before injection of C. oil, animals fed with HFr diet for 12 wk demonstrated hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, alteration of insulin sensitivity accompanied by symptoms associated with patients with insulin resistance such as increased lipid peroxidation, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction.

Injection of C. oil for 4 weeks in hamster ameliorated HFr-induced hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction.

The effect of C. oil at 300 mg/kg [ ] was comparable with the standard drug fenofibrate.

Rats treated with C. oils for 4 weeks also showed a statistical significance in the amelioration of HFr-induced hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia by modulating the expression of the genes involved in lipid and glucose metabolism.

Dr. Singh V the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "High fructose feeding to rats and hamsters led to the development of insulin resistance, hyperglycemia,.....and oxidative stress. C. oil prevented the development of thrombotic complications associated with insulin resistance perhaps by modulating genes involved in lipid and glucose metabolism".

Taken altogether, Curcuma oil (C. oil) isolated from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli Promotes Gastrointestinal Health

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastrointestinal tract formed part of the digestive system, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. which processes the function to extract nutrients of the food intake and expels the remaining waste as feces.

Gastrointestinal dysfunction is a class of conditions that reduce the gastrointestinal functionings, including constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, perianal abscesses, and anal fistulas.

Most common symptoms of the pain, heartburn, abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Most cases of gastrointestinal dysfunction of people with no structure problem are associated with the imbalanced gut microbiota.

Gut microbiota is a community of microbes living in the gastrointestinal tract. There are over trillions of microorganisms, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.

Imbalanced gut community microbes ratio can induce certain health problems including
* Decreasing the interaction with the immune function.

* Increasing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reducing nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obese complication.

* Failure to control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead t

Dr. Ruth K. Dudek-Wicher, the lead scientists wrote, "Gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis) has been linked to important human diseases and inflammation-related disorders".

And, "...the impact of different antibiotics causing such long-term consequences as decreased microbial diversity, modulation of the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio, Clostridium difficile overgrowth, and increased expansion of the opportunistic pathogens Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia spp., and Klebsiella spp.".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads and is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On findings a potent ingredient for the improvement of gut health, researchers examined the Brassica rich diet effect on intestinal lactobacilli and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), or alteration to the composition of the gut microbiota in healthy adults.

The randomized crossover study included 10 healthy adults received a high ( one 84 g portions of broccoli, six 84 g portions of cauliflower and six 300 g portions of a broccoli and sweet potato soup) and a low (one 84 g portion of broccoli and one 84 g portion of cauliflower) Brassica diet for 2‐wk periods, with a 2‐wk washout phase separating the diets.

According to the differentiation of fecal microbiota composition in samples collected following 2 wk Brassica‐free periods, increased consumption of Brassica was associated with a reduction in the relative abundance of SRB, and other bacterias such as  Rikenellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Mogibacteriaceae, Clostridium, and unclassified Clostridiales.

In other words, consumption of Brassica improved the gut microbiome composition by reducing numbers of bacteria associated with gastrointestinal "bad-health" without alternating the expression of other bacterias.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The increased consumption of Brassica vegetables was linked to a reduced relative abundance of SRB, and therefore may be potentially beneficial to gastrointestinal health".

Taken altogether, broccoli used combined with cauliflower may be considered a functional food for the promotion of gut health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Kills Off Kidney Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer, a class of diseases refers to a group of cells that grow and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in a specific tissue of an organ.

Over time, after successfully penetrating to the deeper layers of the organs, most cancer can travel a distance away to damage other healthy tissues via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine and formed part of the detoxified organs to filter out blood by removing wastes and extra water to make urine.

Kidney cancer is a medical condition associated with cell growth irregularly that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the kidney tissue, before spreading to the deeper layers to form a tumor through unlimited cell cycle division.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women in the US. In 2019, approximately, 73,820 new cases of kidney cancer will be diagnosed including 44,120 in men and 29,700 in women. The disease also causes the death of 14,770 Americans, including 9,820 men and 4,950 women in the same year.

The causes of kidney cancer are unknown. However, epidemiologically, the increase in age, gender, smoking, obesity, family diabetes, long-term exposure to chemical toxins, and use of diuretic and nondiuretic anti-hypertensive medication are some prevalent factors found in patients with kidney cancer.

Some researchers suggested the increased incidence of kidney cancer in the US may correlate to obesity caused by the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades.

Dr. Wilson KM, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the Chan School of Public Health wrote, "Obesity has been largely measured as body mass index (BMI). Studies which evaluated other measures of obesity including waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) as well as an increase in weight have reported similar positive associations with RCC".

And " Although the mechanisms by which obesity influences renal carcinogenesis have been under-explored, insulin resistance and certain growth factors including insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), sex steroid hormones, and biochemical markers such as adiponectin may be involved".

On finding a potent compound which process renal protective activity, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A, a major chemical constituent of Withania somnifera, in the renal cancer cell line.

According to tested analysis, withaferin A application resulted in apoptotic cell death in several types of human renal cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, withaferin A inhibited the Caki cells by inducing signature endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers, leading to the accumulation of unfolded proteins associated with cancer cell death.

Moreover, CAAT/enhancer-binding protein-homologous protein (CHOP) associated with pro-apoptotic function in the integrated stress response was elevated by the injection of withaferin A.

Intertestingly, withaferin A-induced ER stress to cause cytotoxicity against renal cancer cells by increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the present study provides strong evidence supporting an important role of the ER stress response in mediating withaferin A-induced apoptosis".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of renal cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry in the Prevention and Treatment of Psoriasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease caused by speeding up the life cycle of skin cells that lead to patches of abnormal skin.

Psoriasis may be localized which causes red, dry, itchy, and scaly skin patches in the affected area.

In cases of severity, psoriasis can cover the body completely.

Some patients also experience symptoms of thickened, pitted or ridged nails and swollen and stiff joints.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor for preventive measure.

The causes of psoriasis are not identified, however, researchers believed that genetic proposition exacerbated by certain factors such as weather, injury, illness, or stress are some of the most causable factors that induce the onset of the condition.

Other risk factors associated with psoriasis may include skin injury that did not heal properly, people who are obese and side effects of long term use of certain medicines such as oral steroids.

Some researchers suggested smoking that has a strong impact on the immune system may also be one of the major causes of psoriasis in smokers.

Dr. wrote, "A number of inflammatory immune-related conditions have been associated with smoking, including psoriasis. Smoking affects the onset of psoriasis".

And, " Several pathophysiological mechanisms may explain the association of psoriasis with smoking, including oxidative stress, interaction with signaling pathways active in psoriasis, and vascular influences".

The findings strongly suggested, if you smoke, you are at a higher risk of psoriasis

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a natural and therapeutic ingredient for the treatment of psoriasis, researchers
a cosmeceutical formulation based on boswellic acids and  Vaccinium myrtillus seed oil in patients with psoriasis.

The double-blind study is to compare a novel BA formulation (containing Bosexil(®), INCI [International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients]: lecithin, Boswellia serrata resin extract) with a placebo formulation and a formulation of Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry) seed oil.

More precisely, patients with psoriasis or erythematous eczema were randomly assigned, in a 1:1:1 ratio, to Bosexil(®), V. myrtillus seed oil, or placebo.

During the experiment, Bosexil(®) and the V. myrtillus seed oil treatment significantly improved psoriasis, scales in comparison with placebo.

Formulation of Vaccinium myrtillus seed oil exerted a similar effect as those of Bosexil(®) without any case of worsening compared to placebo.

Furthermore, V. myrtillus seed oil improved itch and erythema in 66.7% and 77.8% of patients, respectively compared to the Bosexil(®) formulation of (60% of cases) and erythema (60% of cases) without any case of worsening, respectively.

The results clearly suggested that V. myrtillus seed oil and Bosexil(®) formulation process a strong anti-psoriasis activity without side effects.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of psoriasis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene the Best Anti Cardiovascular Disease Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases associated with blood vessels and heart muscle. Depending on the location of heart muscle damage or the blood vessel blockage, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart.

Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart, is a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65. Believe it or not, more than 6.5 million Americans are living with the condition of heart failure.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the US. More precisely, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US  every year are caused by heart disease.

Furthermore, every year about 735,000 Americans has a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.

The exact causes of cardiovascular disease are not cleared. However, epidemiologically family history, age ethnicity, gender, medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure and diabetes has been found in most patients with CVD.

Some researchers in the examined the correlation between a high-fat diet and cardiovascular disease in obese patients suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be one major culprit that causes the onset of CVD.

Dr. Jane E Freedman wrote, " According to the National Center for Health Statistics (1999), 61% of adults in the U.S. are overweight (body mass index [BMI] 25 to 29.9 kg/m2), and 26% are obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2). Elevated BMI, particularly caused by abdominal or upper-body obesity, has been associated with diseases and metabolic abnormalities including hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease.".

And, " clearly established diseases associated with high-fat or high-calorie diets can be offset by the use of nutritional supplements. Although these findings beckon us to draw broader implications, even if proven true in larger studies, it is doubtful that this will lead to a recommendation of high-calorie, high-fat diets".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the effect of lycopene by a meta-analysis.

According to the 14 studies identified by the search in the medical literature of the database of Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to October 2016,
* Lycopene exerted a significant inverse association with a pooled risk ratio (RR) of 0.83 in the risk of CVD.

* Furthermore, dietary lycopene intake was statistically significant in the reduction of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) with an RR of 0.87 and stroke with an RR of 0.83.

* Lycopene biomarker concentrations were also inversely associated with the risk CVD.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Higher lycopene exposure is inversely associated with a lower risk of CVD".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
