Topical Turmeric, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment Vitiligo

By Kyle J. Norton

Vitiligo is a condition of skin discolor disease caused by the destruction of pigment cells and melanocytes of the skin.

The condition in most cases is localized. However, in some patients, the disease also can affect several different areas on the body.

Symptoms of vitiligo are associated with the loss of skin color, or white, and patches of skin.

The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, however, some researchers suggested that the disease may be caused by the immune overreaction that mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body.

Epidemiologically, people in the younger age group before the age of 40 are at most risk of vitiligo.
According to the statistics, over 50% of vitiligo are found in patients who are 20 and younger.

The condition has been found to induce emotional and psychological issues to patients, even the condition does not cause pain or health problems.

As of today, researchers do not know how to prevent disease onset. Most medications for the treatment of vitiligo including creams that control inflammation, combining psoralen and light therapy are focusing on reducing the severity of the condition and improve the quality of life.

If all noninvasive treatments fail, surgery may be necessary.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of vitiligo, researchers examined the curcumin effect on the pigment cells of the skin, melanocytes.

Injection of Cucumis melo extract showed to exhibit the production of antioxidant by the host in blocking the effect of free radical in the induction of skin oxidative stress.

Topical preparation, containing Cucumis melo superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, demonstrated a potential effect in the treatment of vitiligo.

Natural UV or artificial narrowband UVB treatment or phototherapy displayed significant protection against pigment damage, similar to those of turmeric topical preparation.

Additionally, the topical gel according to the repigmentation rate recorded exerted a similar effect compared to the patients treated only with the phototherapy with adverse effects.

Moreover, the topical formulation, containing phenylalanine, Cucumis melo extract, and acetylcysteine showed a more promising result combined with nb - UVB target phototherapy.

Based on the findings, turmeric used along with or combined with other conventional medicine may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of vitiligo pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Kills Ovarian Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Ovarian cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the ovary.

Most cases of ovarian cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the ovary.

In the very early stage of ovarian cancer, patients may not experience any specific symptoms. However, after penetrating into the deeper layers and increasing in size, ovarian tumors may cause symptoms of an abdominal mass, bloating, back pain, urinary urgency, constipation, pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding and buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity, accompanied with general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

At the advanced stage, the cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the ovary to infect other healthy tissues and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.

Ovarian cancer is classified into 5 stages
1. Stage 0,
If the cancerous cell has not penetrated in deeper tissue but in the surface of the ovarian lining.

2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface they have invaded into deep ovaries lining, but still completely inside the ovaries.

a. Stage IA1
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1:
The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.
b. Stage IB:
Cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5cm (2 inches).
b.1. Stage IB1:
Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2:
Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (2 inch)

3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the lung.

4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the lung.

5. Stage IV
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately outside of the ovaries, other distant parts of the body

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers evaluated the effect of a high quantity of bromelain from pineapple anticarcinogenic activity against A2780 ovarian cancer cell lines.

In order to prevent the homogenization, ultrafiltration, precipitation, and dialysis in contributing to heavy loss of bromelain, fresh pineapple juices from the flesh (PJ-F), core (PJ-C) and stem (PJ-S) were selected as a source of crude bromelain.

Bromelain concentrations of PJ-F, PJ-C, and PJ-S (1 μg/ml, 10 μg/ml, 100 μg/ml and 1000 μg/ml) were selected to the study.

According to the tested assays, a 100 μg/ml concentration of bromelain showed an exceptional efficiently to inhibit the cancer cells without affecting the nearby normal cells.

Based on the basis of morphological alterations using fluorescent and inverted phase contrast microscopes, all concentration induced cancer cell death through apoptosis.

Additionally, the efficacy of fresh pineapple juices that kills cancer cells on A2780 cells was attributed to the inhibition of tumor colony forming abilities.

In other words, PJ-F, PJ-C, and PJ-S effectively suppressed the colony formation in cancer cells.

Based on the results, Dr. Madihah Binti Abdul Gani, the lead scientist said, "PJ-F, PJ-C, and PJ-S may have the potential to induce anticarcinogenic effects through apoptosis to A2780 and ... in vitro".

Taken altogether, bromelain found in fresh pineapple juices may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cucumber Normalizes the Blood Glucose in Diabetics

By Kyle J. Norton

Blood glucose is the levels of sugar in the blood. Normally, high levels of sugar converted to energy or deposit as fat in the tissues through the production of insulin by the beta cells in the pancreas.

Hyperglycemia is a hallmark of diabetes caused by abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood due to improper diabetic management.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream associated with clogged-up of insulin receptors or died off of beta cells in the pancreas.

Untreated high blood glucose over time has been found to induce diabetic complication with severe consequences.

According to the statistics provided by the WHO, The number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. The global prevalence of diabetes* among adults over 18 years of age has risen from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014.

In developing countries, diabetes prevalence has been rising more rapidly in middle- and low-income, compared to the diabetes prevalence in rich people in emerging countries. The results may be associated with economic prosperity over the past few decades as the rich in the emerging countries have replaced the traditional diet with the Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat accompanied with processed foods and red meat.

Some researchers suggested that by managing diet properly, you may reduce the risk of hyperglycemia.

* A low-carbohydrate diet
Unfortunately, according to the study by CSIRO Health Sciences and Nutrition, without active ongoing dietary advice, adherence to dietary intervention is poor(44).

* Probiotics
Probiotics could have beneficial effects beyond gastrointestinal health. They were found to improve certain metabolic disorders such as hypertension. Hypertension is caused by various factors and the predominant causes include an increase in cholesterol levels, incidence of diabetes, inconsistent modulation of renin and imbalanced sexual hormones(48).

* Adding small amount cinnamon into your daily diet
p-Methoxycinnamic acid (p-MCA), a cinnamic acid enhanced glucose-, glibenclamide-induced insulin secretion(49)

* Adding garlic into your daily diet
Garlic improved glycemic control in addition to antihyperlipidemic activity. Garlic may be a good addition to the management of patients with diabetes and hyperlipidemia(51).

* Adding onion into your daily diet
Freeze dried onion powder containing diet showed a significant decrease in blood phospholipids and triglycerides. Hepatic cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids which were elevated under diabetic condition were countered significantly by dietary onion(52).

* Adding green tea or coffee into your diet
Drinking green tea and coffee are associated with a reduced risk of diabetes. People who drink at  4 cups of tea per day may have a 16% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than non-tea drinkers, according to InterAct Consortium(53a). Coffee consumption decreased the risk of developing diabetes. The protective effect may exist aside from the influence of caffeine intake, according to the study by Gifu University Graduate School of Medicine(53b).

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

Researchers on finding a potential compound for the modulation of blood glucose investigated the effect of hydroalcoholic and ethanolic extract obtained from C. sativus seeds in a model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic (type I) rats.

The selected normal and diabetic male Wistar rats (STZ, 60 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) were treated daily with vehicle (5 ml/kg), hydroalcoholic (0.2, 0.4, 0.8 g/kg) and buthanolic extract (0.2, 0.4, 0.8 g/kg) and glibenclamide (1 & 3 mg/kg) separately, for 9 days.

In the initial phase, C. sativus seeds extracts were not effective in reducing blood glucose levels (BGL) in both normal and diabetic rats.

However, after 9 days of treatment, both hydroalcoholic (22.5-33.8 %) and butanol (26.6- 45.0 %) extracts not only reduced levels of blood glucose but also inhibited the loss of body weight in diabetic rats compared to controls.

The results suggested a long-term intake of cucumber seeds modulates the blood glucose in diabetics without affecting the blood glucose in healthy individuals.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "C. sativus seeds extracts (hydroalcoholic and buthanolic) had a role in diabetes control probably through a mechanism similar to euglycemic agent".

Futhermore, in comparison with the effect of the fruit extract of C. metuliferus on normoglycemic and alloxan-induced hyperglycemic rats, researchers found the treatment at oral doses of 1000 and 1500 mg/kg showed an insignificant (P > 0.05) decrease in the blood glucose concentration of normoglycemic rats.

However, at the dose of 500 mg/kg, the fruit extract produced an insignificant (P > 0.05) decrease in blood glucose levels of alloxan-treated rats, compared to a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the blood glucose concentration of hyperglycemic rats at 1000 and 1500 mg/kg oral dose points.

In other words, the cucumber fruits exerted the proportional efficacy in diabetics in a dose-dependent manner with no effect on blood glucose on nondiabetics.

Dr. Jimam N, the lead scientist, in the final report said, "the data suggested that the fruit extract did not alter the BGC level in normoglycemic rats, but had a potential hypoglycemic property in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic rats".

Taken altogether, cucumber may be used for the modulation of blood glucose concentration, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tomato the Potent Anti Digestive-Tract Cancer Functional Food, Human Studies Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Digestive-tract formed part of the digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus and plays a critical role to absorb the nutrient from the food intake to the blood before passing them to other parts of the body.

Cancers are a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth in the body tissue.

Most cases of digestive-tract cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tissue before penetrating into deeper layers and colonizing the entire organ.

Colon cancer is one of the most common and slow growing cancer in the digestive tract that

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, 95,520 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer. Colon cancer will also cause the death of 50,260 patients in the same years.

The 5 years survival rate of colon cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%.

Most common signs of digestive tract cancer include abdominal pain, blood in the stool due to bleeding and a noticeable lump in the abdomen accompanied by the general symptoms shared with other types of cancer such as unexplained weight loss, weakness or fatigue and gastrointestinal discomfort and loss of appetite.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms with no signs of stopping, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

WHO in the examination of diet in cancer risk wrote, " cancer is the most important cause of death after diseases of the circulatory system. It accounts for 20% of all deaths in the Region, with 2.5 million new cases diagnosed each year".

And, "A large body of literature indicates that as much as 30% of all cancer cases are linked to poor dietary habits, and is therefore preventable. The proportion reaches 70% for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract".

In other words, poor diet is one of the major cause of gastrointestinal cancer worldwide.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of digestive-tract cancer, researchers examined the relationship between tomato intake and the risk of digestive tract cancers.

According to the data from a series of case-control studies conducted in Italy between 1983 and 1992, over the time span, 317 incident cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx, 85 of the esophagus, 723 of the stomach, 955 of the colon, and 629 of the rectum, were diagnosed compared to a total of 2879 controls admitted for acute, non-neoplastic conditions, unrelated to long-term modifications of diet.

The ORs for the highest tomato consumption quartile were 0.65 (95% CI 0.4-1.0) for oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus, 0.43 (95% CI 0.3-0.6) for stomach, 0.39 (95% CI 0.3-0.5) for colon, and 0.42 (95% CI 0.3-0.6) for rectum.

The ORs of colorectal cancer for the highest consumption quintile were 0.79 (95% CI 0.6-0.9) for colon and 0.71 (95% CI 0.5-0.9) for rectal cancer, according to another study of colorectal cancer, based on 1,953 cases and 4,154 controls, conducted between 1992 and 1996, using a more detailed food frequency questionnaire.

The findings strongly suggested that long-term high amount of tomato consumption has a strong impact against the risk of digestive tract cancer, regardless of several potential confounding factors, including measures of body mass index, calorie intake, and physical activity.

Furthermore, in order to examine the additional information about tomato anti- digestive-tract cancers, researchers investigated the effect of tomatoes on the risk of digestive tract tumor based on an integrated series of case-control studies conducted between 1985 and 1991 in northern Italy, where tomato intake is high but, also, heterogeneous.

Over the span of 7 years, oral cavity and pharynx, 314; the esophagus, 85; stomach, 723; colon, 955; and rectum, 629 were diagnosed compared to a total of 2,879 controls admitted to hospital for acute non-neoplastic or non-digestive conditions, unrelated to long-term dietary modifications.

The OR of digestive-tract cancers in the upper quartile was ranging between 0.4 and 0.7 compared to the baseline.

Researchers after allowance for age, sex, study center, education, smoking and drinking level, and tertile of total caloric intake into account said, "The beneficial effect of raw tomatoes in this population may be partly due to the fact that they constitute perhaps the most specific feature of the Mediterranean diet".

And, " However, if it is true that tomatoes protect against digestive-tract cancers, this is of interest from both a scientific and a public health viewpoint".

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of digestive-tract cancers, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betanin Protects the Kidney Against Renal Fibrosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Renal fibrosis is a condition of abnormal healing of the kidney tissues after injury, caused by the formation of scars in the kidney.

Renal scarring has been found to gradually reduced the renal function, leading to end-stage renal failure, depending on the severity and the area of scarring forming.

Patients at the end stage of renal failure may require dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Conventionally, as of today, there are no effective treatments for preventing the progression of renal fibrosis. Treatments of renal fibrosis are to delay the progression, reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life in the patients and caregivers.

Believe it or not, according to the statistics, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal fibrosis affect half of the adults above age 70 and 10% of the world's population.

Although the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of renal fibrosis suggest complex genetic and environmental influences on the development of fibrosis, some researchers suggested that aging may be one of the major factors induced the onset of the condition.

Dr. Hai-Chun Yang, the lead scientist wrote, "Glomerulosclerosis and interstitial fibrosis increase in the aging kidney, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreases with increasing age. Decreases in stem cell number and function contribute to renal aging".

The findings strongly suggested there is an increased risk of renal fibrosis in the aging population

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of renal fibrosis, researchers examined the bioactive compound found in the fruits of Opuntia elatior Mill anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activity.

According to the previous study, oral administration of betanin exerted a protective effect against high glucose-induced rat renal epithelial cell fibrosis and matrix accumulation, major features of diabetic nephropathy (DN).

In streptozotocin (STZ) induced DN left in diabetes condition without any treatment during the following 4 weeks, following by orally administered Betanin (25, 50 and 100mg/kg/day) and lisinopril (5mg/kg/day, reference compound) for 8 weeks after the induction of DN.

According to the tested assays, betanin significant inhibited the expression of proteinuria, blood glucose, serum creatinine and BUN levels caused by the injection of streptozotocin (STZ).

Betanin also restored the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the kidney tissues which were reduced by the STZ, produced by the host.

In other words, betanin protected the kidney injury in the diabetic model through a number of factors, including reduced levels of proteinuria, blood glucose.

Furthermore, betanin not only inhibited the formation of renal fibrosis but also prevented the kidney against glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis in tested animals.

Finally, betanin protected the kidney against the onset of fibrosis by modulating the mRNA and function of protein expression associated with cellular differentiation, apoptosis, fibrogenesis, and network-forming collagen and tumor suppression against alternation of kidney cell DNA.

In other words, betanin not only protected the kidney against the formation of renal fibrosis but also inhibited the function of proteins associated with the alternation of the inflammatory kidney cells DNA.

Dr. Sutariya B the leads scientists said, "The results conclude that betanin can effectively suppress renal fibrosis in DN, and may slow down the progression to end-stage renal disease by regulating TGF-β signal path".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of renal fibrosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Artichoke, the Anti Diabetes Functional Herbal Remedy in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not enough insulin entering the bloodstream as a result of the loss of beta cells in the pancreas or insulin receptor sites clogged by plaques that are responsible for the production of insulin.

The insulin receptor sites processed a function that binds the insulin and passes the message into the cell, leading to the transformation of glucose from the blood to energy.

The hallmark of diabetes is insulin resistance. The condition has been found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease even without the presence of diabetes.

The exact causes of insulin resistance are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and lifestyle are major risk factors that cause the onset of the syndrome.

According to the statistics, in the US, between 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance. More than 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk of insulin resistance.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread insulin resistance in the US may be a result of the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Merat S, in the examination of the Western-type diets in the risk of insulin resistance, said, "the Western diets commonly used in LDLR-/- mice may not only induce atherosclerosis, but also IR, potentially complicating the interpretation of results".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researcher on the finding a natural therapeutics for the treatment of diabetes investigated the artichoke leaves extract on metabolic disorders and oxidative stress in alloxan-diabetic rats.

The study included 40 male Wistar rats induced diabetes with a single dose intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of alloxan (150 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)) randomly assigned to orally and daily administrated of ethanol extract from C. scolymus at two doses (200-400 mg/kg, b.w) or (12 mg/kg, b.w).

According to the tested assays, the ethanol extract from leaves of C. scolymus showed the highest antioxidant activity and endowed the powerful inhibition in vitro of α-amylase activity with IC50=72,22 ug/uL.

In vivo, the ethanol extract from the leaves of C. scolymus (200-400 mg/kg) decreased significantly the levels of α-amylase enzymes involved in the digestion of carbohydrates in the serum of diabetic rats.

Furthermore, the administration of ethanol extract improved the anti-oxidative activity demonstrated by the increase of CAT, SOD and GSH activities in liver, kidney, and pancreas of diabetic rats.

Compared to diabetic rats, the ethanol extract from leaves of C. scolymus also decreased blood glucose rate, plasma total cholesterol (T-Ch) and triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) after 28 days of treatment.

Researchers after taking into account other factors said, "These observed strongly suggest that ethanol extract from the leaves of C. scolymus has anti-hyperglycemic properties, at least partly mediated by antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects".

In order to reveal additional information about artichoke antidiabetic property, researchers in the joint study lead by the Hallym University examined the Jerusalem artichoke inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and fasting serum glucose levels.

In a non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus animal model (C57BIKsJ db/db) selected for the study, water extract of PJA fermented by L. plantarum, and two strains of Bacillus subtilis injection showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro, compared to original Jerusalem artichoke (PJA).

PJA fermentation group significantly lower blood glucose concentration than the control.

At the end 7 weeks, PJA fermentation group also induced higher levels of serum insulin and HDL cholesterol levels and lower the concentrations of triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids, and total cholesterol.

Additionally, the intestinal α-glucosidase activity was partially inhibited.y the PJA fermentation injection.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Plant-Based Betanin Kills Colon Cancer Cells by Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Colon cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the irregular growth of cells in the colon, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Colon formed part of the digestive tract, including the large intestine with a function to reabsorb fluid before passing them back to the blood and remove waste through the anus.

Colon cancer is one most slow cancer compared to other cancers. In some patients, colon cancer may exist in the colon more than 20 years before it is discovered.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed. Colon cancer also causes the death of 51,020 deaths. during 2019.

The lifetime risk associated with the onset of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of colorectal cancer, aging is one of the major culprits, according to the epidemiological studies.

The median age diagnosed with colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women compared to the age of 63 of rectal cancer in both men and women.

However, over the past few decades, the incidence of colon cancer has been found to rise in the younger age groups, probably due to the promotion of a high-fat diet.

Dr. Robb Bird, the editor at the worldwide health wrote, "Poor diet is associated with about 80 percent of colorectal cancer cases. Even 20 years ago studies were attributing colon cancers to high-fat diets. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States with more than 130,000 cases reported every year. These cancers are a result of a combination of several causes including genetic, epigenetic and environmental causes, such as diet. Hopefully, with more research, the exact pathways by which diet leads to cancer can be discovered. Once discovered, blocking these pathways can hopefully reduce the negative impact of a high-fat diet on colon cancer risk".

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

Om finding a potential compound for the treatment of continuing colonic inflammation, an important risk factor in the development of colorectal cancer, researchers examined phytochemical compound betanin isolated from beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. rubra) effects against colon cancer.

In patients with inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), administration of betanin exerted an inhibition against the oxidative DNA damage and induced apoptosis in neutrophils from the blood, compared to those obtained in colon carcinoma-derived Caco-2 cells.

In IBD patients' neutrophils, betanin treatment at the concentration of 100 μM for 24 h modulated the immune function by exerting anti-inflammatory activity, assessed by comet assay.

In Caco-2 cells, injection of H2O2 caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks in comparison to untreated cells, but pre-treatment with betanin reduced DNA damage in these cells.

Betanin also exhibited the protein associated with pro-apoptotic function accompanied by the loss of mitochondrial transmembrane potential in the energy transformation.

On other words, betanin promotes the ROS cytotoxicity that leads to colon cancer cell death without harming to the nearby cells through its antioxidant activity.

The findings strongly suggested betanin exerts anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer preventive activity.

Taken altogether, betanin isolated from beetroot may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
