Celery, The Functional Food Which Protects the Brian Neuron Against Alzheimer’s disease (AD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Celery may be the next generation of the natural and pharmaceutical target to discover the major ingredient for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, some scientists suggested.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

People who are experiencing the symptoms of mild confusion and difficulty remembering at the older age are eventually developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Although researchers do not know the exact cause of AD. However, they do know certain prevalent risk factors such as genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle, and environmental conditions are associated with the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the genetic analysis, people who carry the mutation genes associated with the autosomal-dominant AD (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2) and APOE4, affecting approximately 12 percent of the U.S. population are associated to the increased risk of the late-onset AD.

The Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grain are also the major risk factor that causes the disease due the diet in promoting insulin resistance, decreased endothelial production of nitric oxide, free radical excess, inflammatory metabolites, homocysteine, and oestrogen deficiency.

Dr. Berrino F, the researchers at the Istituto nazionale per lo studio e la cura dei tumori in the investigation of the correlation among patients with the AD and follow the Western diet before the disease onset said, "theoretically (AD) be prevented (or delayed) by relatively simple dietary measures aimed at increasing insulin sensitivity (through reduction of refined sugars and saturated fats from meat and dairy products), the ratio between n-3 and n-6 fatty acids (e.g. from fish and respectively seed oils), antioxidant vitamins, folic acid, vitamin B6, phytoestrogens (vegetables, whole cereals, and legumes, including soy products), vitamin B12 (bivalve molluscs, liver), and Cr, K, Mg, and Si salts".

These results suggested if you follow a lifestyle with moderate exercise and prevented exposure to chemical toxicity, before the disease onset you are at the substantially lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable.

The veggie can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

Researchers on the team of neurodegenerative program at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College in the reaffirm the effect of Chinese celery on neuroprotective effects showed that L-3-n-butylphthalide (L-NBP), an extract from celery seeds demonstrates a significant activity in inhibiting oxidative injury, neuronal apoptosis, and glial activation, reducing amyloid-β protein precursor (AβPP) processing and Aβ generation in rat model.

The study focuses on the neuro effect of 12 months old AβPP/PS1 mice given 15 mg/kg L-NBP by oral gavage for 3 months.

At the end of the experiment, L-NBP treatment significantly improved the spatial learning and memory deficits, compared to the vehicle-treated AβPP/PS1 mice.

The expressions of the cyclin-dependent kinase in regulating cell cycle and glycogen synthase kinase 3β in regulating cell migration, the most important kinases involved in tau phosphorylation found abundant in neurons of the central nervous, were markedly decreased by L-NBP treatment.

These results indicated the progression of the AD in the alternation of neuron cells expression were inhibited by the application of L-NBP.

This reduction of tau phosphorylation and kinases activations caused by injection of L-NBP was observed in the biomarker of neuro-cell differentiation.

Unfortunately, the application did not exert any effect on cerebral Aβ plaque deposition and Aβ levels in brain homogenates.

Dr. Peng Y, the lead scientist wrote, " L-NBP shows promising candidate of multi-target neuronal protective agent for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease."

Further assessment of the effects of L-NBP on learning and memory in a triple-transgenic AD mouse model (3xTg-AD) that develops both plaques and tangles with aging, as well as cognitive deficits, researchers found that after Ten-month-old 3xTg-AD mice were given 15 mg/kg L-NBP by oral gavage for 18 weeks
* L-NBP treatment significantly improved learning deficits and long-term spatial memory, compared with vehicle control treatment.

* L-NBP treatment significantly reduced total cerebral Abeta plaque deposition and lowered Abeta levels in brain homogenates but had no effect on fibrillar Abeta plaques.

* L-NBP markedly enhanced soluble amyloid precursor protein secretion (alphaAPPs), alpha-secretase, and PKCalpha expression that have been known in the prevention of the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD).

* L-NBP treatment in 3xTg-AD mice also reduced glial activation and oxidative stress compared with control treatment, an indication of AD inhibition.

These remarkable results once again, indicated that L-NBP can be promising preclinical potential as a multitarget drug for the prevention and/or treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Taken all together, celery processed a high amount bioactive compound L-3-n-butylphthalide (L-NBP) may be considered a functional food in the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of celery anti-Alzheimer's disease possibilities.

Ginger, the Best Anti Lung Cancer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent spice which processes a potential to treat lung cancer, according to studies.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the lung tissue.

In Canada, according to the statistics, lung cancer is the leading cause of death in both men and women.  Lung cancer accounts for 26.7% of all deaths from cancer and 6.5% of all mortality.

The 5-year survival rate for people with stage IB NSCLC is about 68%.

At the advanced stage, the lung cancer cell may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerves leading to vomiting blood and localized severe pain accompanied by other general symptoms of cancer such as weight loss, reduce appetite.

In this stage, lung cancer also can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Most common glands and organs of lung cancer metastases are adrenal gland, bones, brain, and liver.

Although there are many factors associated with the onset of lung cancer, some researchers suggested that current and past smoking accounts for most of the cases. The risk of developing lung cancer is about 23 times higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers, epidemiologically.

Dr. Ozlü T, the lead scientist in examing the risk of lung cancer in smoking, wrote, "The association between cigarettes and lung cancer has been proven by large cohort studies. Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking".

And, "DNA adducts, the metabolites of smoke carcinogens bound covalently with DNA, are regarded as an indicator of cancer risk in smokers. In recent decades, there has been a shift from squamous and small cell lung cancer types to adenocarcinoma, due to increasing rates of smoking among female population and rising light cigarette usage".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of lung cancer with no side effects compared to chemo medication examined the anti-lung cancer of bioactive compounds isolated from the ginger.

[6]-shogaol, [6]-paradol and [6]-gingerol, potentiate the anti-NSCLC activity, however,  [6]-shogaol showed the greatest inhibitory effects on the NSCLC cell proliferation and anchorage-independent growth.

[6]-Shogaol also induced cell cycle arrest (G1 or G2/M) and apoptosis as well as the cascades associated with the programming cell deaths.

Furthermore, [6]-shogaol inhibited protein (Akt kinase activity), associated with cancer proliferation and survival In NCI-H1650 lung cancer cells by inhibiting the regulator involved cell cycle progression.

Dr. Myoung Ok Kim and colleagues in the final report said, "The current study clearly indicates that [6]-shogaol can be exploited for the prevention and/or treatment of NSCLC".

In order to reveal more information about the ginger anti-lung cancer activity, researchers examined the [6]-gingerol and [6]-shogaol and a ginger extract with a high level of shogaols (GEHS) against lung cancer cells.

[6]- shogaol has greater growth inhibitory activity (about 10 fold) on lung and colon cancer cell lines than [6]- gingerol.

Shogaols of ginger preparations and GEHS has stronger cancer preventive effect, compared to other ginger extracts.

The inhibitory activities of GEHS and extract from fresh ginger, as well as [6]-shogaol and [6]-gingerol inhibited an NNK-induced lung carcinogenesis model in A/J mice.

These results provide the basic information on key active cancer preventive constituents in ginger extracts. The development of a standardized and more active ginger extract preparation will facilitate future pre-clinical and clinical studies on the health benefit of ginger extracts, according to the author.

Take all together, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a function alternative for prevention and combined primary therapy for the treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Manuka Honey, the Best Natural Liquid for Treatment Atopic Dermatitis, Researchers Reveal

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis,  according to studies.

Atopic dermatitis or eczema is an inflammatory condition associated with red and itchy skin.

Most cases of atopic dermatitis are found in children. However, adults may also get it too. Skin irritation is found more often in children compared to adults.

The causes of atopic dermatitis are unknown. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as genetic preposition and abnormal function of the immune system and environment conditions may be involved in the development of the disease.

Epidemiological studies suggested that most patients with chronic atopic dermatitis also have asthma and hay fever, particularly in allergies.

Some researchers suggested that atopic dermatitis is more common in people who live in the air pollution city.

Dr. Ahn K in the study of the role of air pollutants in atopic dermatitis, wrote, " Both indoor and outdoor air pollution, which are of increasing concern with urbanization, are well-known environmental risk factors for asthma, whereas there is relatively little evidence in AD".

And, " epidemiologic and experimental data on the role of air pollution in patients with AD. Recent evidence suggests that a variety of air pollutants, such as environmental tobacco smoke, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, act as risk factors for the development or aggravation of AD. These air pollutants probably induce oxidative stress in the skin, leading to skin barrier dysfunction or immune dysregulation".

The results clearly suggested the risk of atopic dermatitis increases with air pollutants.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers in the course to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of dermatitis examined the Manuka honey anti skin conditions and dermal injuries.

Injection of Manuka honey showed a significant potency in the treatment of a severe atopic contact dermatitis eczematous reaction with no side effects.

Furthermore, adult volunteers with bilateral atopic dermatitis (AD) were asked to apply MH on one site overnight for seven consecutive days and leave the contralateral site untreated as possible.

There is no significant changes in the skin staphylococci observed after day 7, irrespective of honey treatment.

However, MH treatment showed significant inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines in a dose-dependent manner.

Application of MK also inhibited the mast cell degranulation against the onset of atopic dermatitis (AD).

Dr. Alangari AA, the lead scientist said in the final report, "MH is potentially effective in the treatment of AD lesions based on both clinical and cellular studies through different mechanisms".

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry, The Plant and Berry That Cure Dry Eye, Scientists Discover

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal fruit for the cure of dry eye, according to studies.

Dry eye is a condition characterized by a lack of quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye for clear vision.

In other words, dry eye is a condition caused by an imbalance of tear production and drainage or low-quality tear production. The condition is very common in the elderly.

There are certain risk factors that may affect the levels of quality of tears, such as aging (most senior age 65 and over have experience of dry eye), gender (the risk of dry eye is higher in women due to the change of hormone as a result of pregnancy and menopause), medications and long term of use of contact lens.

According to the statistics, in the United States, dry eye affects over 4.88 million Americans age 50 and older. The syndrome is most common in the population of middle-aged or older.

Although it is rare, untreated dry eye or serious dry eye syndrome has been associated with the risk of infection, leading to scarring, thinning, and even perforation of the cornea.

People with dry eye may experience symptoms of burning or scratchy sensation, stringy mucus in the eyes, eye redness and sensitivity to light.

Some people with a severe condition may have difficulty with nighttime driving.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility for preventive measure.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of dry eye, a chronic disease of lachrymal fluid and cornea-conjunctival epithelium examined the bioavailability of a standardized bilberry extract in an animal model.

The study included 22 otherwise healthy subjects suffering from dry eye symptoms who were enrolled randomly assigned to receive the more bioavailable bilberry extract or placebo.

Out of 22 participants,11 subjects in the bilberry extract (Mirtoselect®) group and 10 subjects in the placebo group completed the clinical study.

According to the results of the assay analysis, bilberry extract showed a significant improvement in the volume of tear secretion compared to no change in the placebo group.

Mirtoselect® also was more effective in subjects with a higher tendency of dry eye.

The efficacy of bilberry in the treatment of dry eye was attributed to the stimulation of the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host and suppression of the overexpression of free radicals found in the dry eye participants.

Dr. Riva A the lead scientists suggested that bilberry extract can improve tear secretion and plasmatic antioxidant potential in subjects suffering from DED symptoms.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a natural remedy for the treatment of dry eye with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Potential and Natural Anti Type 4 Hypersensitivity with No Side Effects, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of type 4 hypersensitivity with no side effects, according to studies.

Type 4 allergy or type 4 hypersensitivity is often called delayed-type hypersensitivity as the reaction takes several days to develop.

In other words, instead of happening right the way as that of other types, type 4 hypersensitivity typically develops at least 48 hours after exposure to an antigen.

The process that develops type 4 hypersensitivity involved the activation of the white blood cell cells in stimulating the release of cytokines and chemokines, and macrophages and cytotoxic CD8+ T cells associated with the body's adaptive immune response.

Compared to other types of allergy mediated by theantibodyy, type 4 allergy is a cell-mediated response.

Type 4 hypersensitivity can induce allergic contact dermatitis, occurred at the site where the antigen contacts the skin, then spread to other regions through contamination of the antigen.

Type 4 hypersensitivity is caused by atopic dermatitis, lung diseases associated with hypersensitivity, type 2 diabetes and inflammation of thyroid gland.

Treatment of type 4 hypersensitivity is totally depending on the severity of the disease. however, the most appropriate approach is to avoid the offending antigen.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

In the concern of the widespread of Type IV hypersensitivity  caused by the contact dermatitis, researchers at the Kinki University examined the combined effect of arbutin isolated from the leaves of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. (Bearberry leaf) and indomethacin on Type IV allergic reaction-induced immuno-inflammation, carrageenin-induced edema, and adjuvant-induced arthritis.

Injection of arbutin at a dose of 50 mg/kg 24 h after the application rapidly decreased the swelling of type IV allergic sheep induced edema and adjuvant-induced arthritis by picryl chloride (PC-CD) compared to no reaction at the divided doses of 50 mg/kg.

Arbutin (p.o.) plus indomethacin (s.c.) exerted highly inhibitory effects on the swelling of PC-CD and sheep red cell delayed-type hypersensitivity (SRBC-DTH) compared to that of indomethacin alone.

Furthermore, arbutin (p.o.) and indomethacin (s.c.) in a given portion were simultaneously administered, the inhibitory effect was more potent than that of indomethacin alone in both carrageenin-induced edema and adjuvant-induced arthritis.

The results clearly suggested that arbutin may increase the inhibitory action of indomethacin on PC-CD, SRBC-DTH against type 4 hypersensitivity.

Moreover, in the comparison of water extract (UW-ext) from the leaf of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng (Bearberry leaf) on the antiallergic and anti-inflammatory activities of dexamethasone ointment, researchers found one or 2% UW-ext ointment did not inhibit the ear swelling by picryl chloride-induced contact dermatitis (PC-CD) and carrageenin-induced paw edema.

However, combined with dexamethasone ointment (0.005 or 0.025%), UW-ext augmented the inhibitory effect of dexamethasone ointment (0.005 or 0.025%) on these allergic and inflammatory models with no side effects.

These findings showed that not all parts of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi processes anti-type 4 allergies, but combined with other therapy all parts augmented the significant anti-allergic and inflammatory activity with no side effects.

Additionally, the investigation of the antitype 4 allergies properties of the combined effect of 50% methanolic extract from Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. (bearberry leaf) and prednisolone also showed similar results as illustrated by the above 2 studies.

U-ext did not show an inhibitory effect on the swelling induced by PC-CD in divided doses of 100mg/kg immediately before and 16 h after the application of PC-CD, while it exhibited a significant therapeutic effect at a dose of 100 mg/kg or more once 24 h after the application.

Injection of the combination of U-ext (p.o.) and prednisolone (s.c.) simultaneously administered, exerted a greater inhibitory effect compared to that of prednisolone alone.

Researchers at the above studies wrote in the final report, "Bearberry leaf possesses a therapeutic effect against immuno-inflammation induced by PC-CD and also increases the inhibitory effect of prednisolone, and its active principle may be arbutin".

Taken altogether, herbal Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry) may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicines for the treatment of type 4 hypersensitivity with no side effects.

Herbal Andrographis, the Renoprotective Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease with no side effects, according to studies.

The renoprotective effect is protection against anything that can cause the harm to the kidney.

Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, is a condition of gradual loss of kidney function.

According to the observation of patients data associated with the diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases.

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by long-term abnormally high blood glucose, leading to the damage of other tissue and organs, including the kidneys.

According to the statistic, approximately, 30 million American adults have chronic kidney disease, and a large percentage of these people aren't aware of it. 1 in 3 American adults is at risk for kidney disease.

Another cause of chronic kidney disease is kidney disease. Early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse.

Late diagnosis of chronic kidney disease may eventually lead to kidney failure, leading to dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Some researchers suggested that improving the diet in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD)  can make a major difference in pathogenesis of the disease.

Dr. Chaudhary Muhammad Junaid Nazar at the Royal Gwent Hospital in the study diet and chronic kidney disease said, " During the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the requirements and utilization of different nutrients change significantly" and "Understanding the applicable nutritional principles and the available methods for improving the nutritional status of these patients is important".

These results clearly suggested by improving diet may be necessary to delay the complete kidney failure and maintain the kidney function.

For patients on dialysis, diet keeps the levels of electrolytes, minerals, and fluid in the body balanced.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic doe the treatment of the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

With an aim to find a natural compound or whole herb for the treatment of reno disease with no side effects, researchers examined the anti-renal failure activity of A. paniculata.
The study included Male Wistar albino rats divided into three groups: normal control, gentamicin control, and an aqueous extract of A. paniculata (200 mg/kg, per oral (p.o.))-treated.

The nephrotoxic model was induced by gentamicin (80 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.)).

After 10 days, according to the blood sample, aqueous extract of A. paniculata attenuated the gentamicin-induced increase in serum creatinine, serum urea, and blood urea nitrogen levels by 176.92%, 106.27%, and 202.90%, respectively. in a gentamicin-induced nephrotoxic animal model.

These results strongly suggested that the aqueous extract (whole plant) of A. paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees exhibits a significant renoprotective effect against the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male Wistar albino rats.

Additionally, in the comparison the renal protective effects on medical plants, researchers investigated various herbal adaptogens such as shade-dried powders of Withania somnifera, Ocimum sanctum, Asperagus recemosus, Andrographis paniculata, Asphaltum panjabinum (Shilajith), Gymnema Sylvestre, Spirulina platensis, and Panax ginseng on cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative stress and its accumulation in broiler chicken.

A total of 80 male broiler chicks of day-old age were randomly assigned to 10 equal groups. Group 1 birds were fed with basal diet throughout the experiment (1-42 days). Group 2-10 chicks were fed with a basal diet containing cadmium at 100 ppm from day 1 to day 28 (4 weeks). From 29(th) to 42(nd) day (2 weeks), basal diet alone was fed to group 2 chicks which acted as toxic control and group 3-10 birds were fed with feed containing 0.1% powder of W. somnifera, O. sanctum, Aspe. recemosus, An. paniculata, Asph. panjabinum (Shilajith), G. Sylvestre, S. platensis, and P. ginseng, respectively.

The highest concentration of cadmium was found accumulated in kidney, in birds of group 2.

The oxidation induced the increase of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS), and the decrease of antioxidant enzymes GSH concentrations of liver and kidney tissues in cadmium intoxicated birds were significantly reversed by the above-said herbs.

Herbal supplementation in groups 3-10 prevented Cd bioaccumulation which was most evident in the liver, followed by the kidney.

In other words, herbal Andrographis exerted a liver and kidney protective effects comparable to that of herbal medicines in the group 3, namely W. somnifera, O. sanctum, Aspe. recemosus, An. paniculata, Asph. panjabinum (Shilajith), G. Sylvestre, S. platensis, and P. ginseng, respectively.

Dr. Bharavi K, the lead scientist said in the report, "Administration of herbal adaptogens at the rate of 0.1% in feed significantly prevented the bioaccumulation of Cd and reversed the Cd-induced oxidative tissue damage".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of kidney damage caused by oxidative stress and reno failure and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of kidney diseases with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of the herbal medicine should be prescribed by the specialists in the related field as acute kidney damage has been reported in a number of cases

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Natural Remedy for the Treatment Psoriasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Aloe vera may be a potential therapeutic remedy for the prevention and treatment of psoriasis with no side effects, scientists found.

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by the speeding up the life cycle of skin cells, leading to the formation of scales and red patches that are itchy and sometimes painful.

Most common causes of psoriasis is a skin infection with an autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system attacking the skin tissue after bacterial and virus invasion or skin injury due to cut or scrape, an insect bite, or a severe sunburn.

Some researchers believe that the disorder can also be driven by the change of weather, illness, or stress.

Similar to other types of inflammation, it is a result of overexpression of the inflammatory cytokines produced during the course of skin injury and damage, leading to the death and damage of the skin cells that cause of skin cells in the affected area to turn over at a significantly faster rate than normal.

Several risk factors, according to epidemiological studies such as infection, skin injury, smoking, being overweight or obese and long-term use of certain medications including beta-blockers used for the treatment of hypertension are involved in the initiation and progression of psoriasis.

Genetic preposition such as HLA-C06:02 environmental and lifestyle factors, such as certain foods and infections, are some risk factors of psoriasis.

According to statistic, these people have a 30% increased risk for the development of the condition.

Therefore, identifying the trigger potentials may be important for these patients to develop strategies the management and prevention of psoriasis.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.

The herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or herbal medicine for the treatment of psoriasis, with no side effects, researchers evaluated the Aloe vera gel, used traditionally for the treatment of skin diseases, including psoriasis, through assessing the ethanolic extract of the gel in a mouse tail model of psoriasis.

The extract displayed a significant differentiation in the epidermis, as seen from its degree of orthokeratosis (85.07 ± 3.36%) when compared with the negative control (17.30 ± 4.09%).

Furthermore, the extracted gel was found to be equivalent to the effect of the standard positive control, tazarotene (0.1%) gel, which showed a 90.03 ± 2.00% degree of orthokeratosis.

Moreover, the ethanolic extract of Aloe vera leaf gel also produced a significant increase in relative epidermal thickness when compared with the control group, and no change in the standard tazarotene.

Dr. Dhanabal SP, the lead scientist said, "the extract showed an overall antipsoriatic activity of 81.95%, compared with 87.94 for tazarotene, in the mouse tail model for psoriasis".

Additionally, in the examine the topical aloe vera (AV) used to treat various skin conditions, including psoriasis, researchers launched a randomized, comparative, double-blind, 8-week study.

80 patients included in the randomized study received AV or 0.1% TA cream.

The patient's clinical responses were evaluated using the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI).

After 8 weeks of treatment, researchers discovered the mean PASI score decreased from 11.6 to 3.9 (-7.7) in the AV group and from 10.9 to 4.3 (-6.6) in the TA group. Between-group difference was 1.1 (95% confidence interval -2.13, -0.16, P = 0.0237.

And, the mean DLQI score decreased from 8.6 to 2.5 (-6.1) in the AV group and from 8.1 to 2.3 (-5.8) in the TA group.

Between-group difference was 0.3 (95% confidence interval -1.18, -0.64, P = 0.5497).

In the final report, Dr. Choonhakarn C, the lead scientist wrote, "AV cream may be more effective than 0.1% TA cream in reducing the clinical symptoms of psoriasis; however, both treatments have similar efficacy in improving the quality of life of patients with mild to moderate psoriasis".

The findings suggested that herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional remedy of the treatment of  psoriasis topically with no side effects.
