Honey, The Best to Inhibits Chemo-toxicity and Improves Chemotherapy For Treatment of Cancers

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be considered an adjunct therapy combined with the chemo drug in the improvement of the drug efficacy and reduction of chemo toxicity for the treatment of cancers, some scientists found.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the tissue of specific organs, depending on the type of cancer.

Most cases of cancer are the result of the alternation of DNA in the cell located on the surface of the inner lining of an organ. Most patients may not experience any symptoms at the early stage.

However, as cancer progresses, the continued growth tumor may cause pressure on the nearby healthy organs and nerve cells, leading localized symptoms and severe pain.

At the 4th stage of cancer, malignant cells may metastasize to other organs a distance away from the original site.

According to the statistic from the National Cancer Institute, approximately, 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

In 2017, over 15,000 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.
Chemo drugs are medicine used for the treatment of cancer by killing cancer cells that have been spread to other tissue or organ.

Chemotoxicity is the side effects of chemo drugs.

Most common symptoms of chemo drugs include the effect of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, on hair follicles and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system, probably due to the medicine designed to kill cells indiscriminately.

According to the information of the pharmaceutical company, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is one of the most powerful chemotherapy drugs ever invented by mankind.

The chemo drug used to treat a wide variety of cancers can kill cancer at every point in their life cycle.
Unfortunately, the drug can also damage heart cells and cause serious side effects, such as hair loss, breathlessness, feeling sick and easily infected.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food which processes chemopreventive properties and anti chemo toxicity during cancer treatment, researchers evaluate the effect of Kelulut honey (KH), produced by the stingless bees from Trigona species against colon cancer induced in the animal model.

A total of 24 male Sprague Dawley rats aged 5 weeks are included in the study.
Rats were divided into 4 groups: (G1) untreated group not induced with AOM, (G2) untreated group induced with AOM, (G3) treated group induced with AOM, and (G4) treated group not induced with AOM.
Injection of AOM (15 mg/kg) was via intraperitoneal route once a week for two subsequent weeks to induce colorectal cancer.
The treatment groups were given oral administration of KH (1183 mg/kg body weight) twice daily for 8 weeks.

AOM injected group showed a significant increase in the total number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and aberrant crypts (AC) and crypt multiplicity and damage of liver and kidney

After treatment of KH, AOM group displayed a reduction of crypts and chemotoxicity by restoring the liver and kidney function observed by blood profile.

Furthermore, KH was not toxic identified by the KH treated group not induced with AOM.

These results suggested that KH may have a potential effect on inhibiting the toxicity caused by chemotherapy and improving the chemo drugs activity without inducing any side effects.

Moreover, on finding a natural whole food to overcome 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) therapeutic resistance and adverse toxicity in colorectal cancer, researchers looked into Manuka honey (MH), a rich source of bioactive compounds to examine its anticancer effects on human colon cancer HCT-116 and LoVo cells.

Compared to 5-FU alone, MH synergistically enhanced the chemotherapeutic effects of 5-FU, by reducing cell proliferation through the suppression of enzymes and proteins associated with the function in stimulating cancer cell multicity and activation of pathways associated to cell death programming.

Combined with chemo drug 5-FU, MH promoted the expression of antibody production and production of ROS in the induction of cytotoxicity activity against cancer cells without causing to harm to the nearby cells and tissue.

This result was observed by the reducing antioxidants produced by the cancer cells and increasing oxidative stress in the tumor.

Additionally, MH also induced cancer cell apoptosis through cell cycle arrest.

The findings clearly indicated MH could be a useful preventive or adjuvant agent in the treatment of colorectal cancer with 5-FU by inhibiting the toxicity and cancer cells resistance.

Taken altogether, KH and MH can be considered functional foods for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancer without inducing chemotoxicity.

Ginger, The Best Remedy for the Prevention and Treatment of Dysmenorrhea

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be the next generation of natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of menstrual pain, some scientists found.

Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual pain is pain occurred around a few days before menstruation begins

The symptom normally lasts less than three days.

There are  2 types of dysmenorrhea
* Primary dysmenorrhea is the painful period with no other condition occurred most in the adolescence, affecting over 90% of women in the prime time of their reproductive years. In adolescence, some researchers suggested the symptoms are associated with the immature reproductive organs.

* Secondary dysmenorrhea is the painful period associated with the disorder in the woman's reproductive organs, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, or infection.

Some women affected by the painful period may experience symptoms of It occurs in your lower abdominal pain can be felt in the hips, lower back, or thighs.

Other common symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, headache, or fatigue.

There is no cure for dysmenorrhea. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),  the most common treatment for both primary and secondary dysmenorrhea may be effective, however, the drugs can induce some serious side effects, including liver or kidney problems. and hypertension.

If you are currently using conventional medicine for the treatment of dysmenorrhea, please sure you know all the side effects for the preventive measure.
.
In the use of diet therapy for the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea, Dr. Dina Abadi Bavil, the lead scientist said, "Given the scores obtained on the lifestyle questionnaire, significant differences were observed between the groups with and without dysmenorrhea in terms of eating behavior (p=0.008), physical activity (p=0.011), stress (p=0.041), and social relationships".

These results clearly suggested that a healthy diet and lifestyle play important roles in the prevention
and treatment of dysmenorrhea

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On findings of a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea in the replacement of conventional medicine without inducing side effects, researchers examine the effects of ginger on primary dysmenorrhea, through searching the database of medical literature online.

Six selected studies were reviewed by 2 authors independently.

Ginger appeared more effective for reducing pain severity than placebo.

Ginger was found as effective as those of mefenamic acid (an NSAID).

The finding point to one conclusion, oral ginger could be an effective treatment for menstrual pain in dysmenorrhea.

Dr. Daily JW, the lead scientists in another search to find the evidence of ginger for treating primary dysmenorrhea launched an investigation by looking into the database of 12 medical libraries.

Seven met specific selection criteria were included in the review.

Four of the RCTs compared the therapeutic efficacy of ginger with a placebo during the first 3-4 days of the menstrual cycle and were included in the meta-analysis.
The results of the in-depth differentiation showed that ginger processes a significant effect in reducing Pain Visual Analogue Scale (PVAS) in subjects having primary dysmenorrhea.

Six RCTs out of 7 exhibited low to moderate of the risk of bias.

These results of the RCTs strongly indicated the suggestive evidence for the effectiveness of 750-2000 mg ginger powder during the first 3-4 days of the menstrual cycle for primary dysmenorrhea.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of painful period with no side effects.

Herbal Burdock Kills Breast Cancer Cells In Vivo and Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole herb which processes a significant effect in reducing risk and treatment of breast cancer with no side effects, according to some studies.

Breast cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth controllably and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start at the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the breast. At this stage, most patients may experience symptoms of lump on part of the breast, swelling, nipple pain and redness and scaliness. If you have some of the above which can not resolve within 3 weeks, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of breast cancer.

At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers of the breast, malignant cells may travel a distance far the way from the breast to infect other healthy tissue and organs, through the blood and fluids circulation.

In this stage, the breast tumor is growing large enough to suppress the nearby healthy tissue and nerve cells, causing severe localized symptoms and pain.

The liver, brain, bones, or lungs are most commonly organs for breast cancer metastasis.

According to a statistic provided by the cancer society, women in Canada have a lifetime risk of breast cancer incidence rates of 11%. In other words, 11% of Canadian women will develop breast cancer by the time they reach 90 years of age.

Only 20% of breast cancers in Canada are diagnosed in women under 50, compared to almost 30% diagnosed in women over 70 years of age.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer is 100% compared to 89% in the 10 years survival rate.

Therefore, early diagnosis is a key factor to improve the survival rate and prevent a long-term painful
treatment with many unpleasant side effects if the cancer is found in the later stage.

Women are encouraged to examine their breast every month if you found any changes that not in 3 not recover within 3 weeks, please check with your doctor as soon as possible.

Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.

The plant has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

The chemical ingredients of herbal Burdock include guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

In the finding the natural compound with no side effects, researchers examine the anticancer effect of arctigenin (ATG), a natural lignan product of Herbal Burdock (Arctium lappa L.), in human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells.

Application of arctigenin (ATG) showed potency in inhibiting the MDA-MB-231 cell growth by inducing apoptosis.

ATG stimulated the breast cancer cell death programming by reducing the ration expression of Bax/Bcl-2.
Furthermore, ATG also activated the overexpression of free radical in the induction of cytotoxicity to the breast cancer cell line.

These results suggested that ATG induced cancer apoptosis through many different mechanisms, including the pathways in stimulating the expression of ROS that causes cytotoxicity and promoting cell death.

Additionally, in the reaffirming the anti-breast cancer of herbal burdock, researchers conducted an experiment to evaluate the anti-cancer properties of Arctiin, a major lignan constituent of Arctium lappa (Burdock) in animal models.

In human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, injection of Arctiin demonstrated a significant effect in the inhibition of the breast cancer cells associated with associated with the decreasing the function of the protein in promoting the cell cycle division.

Moreover, application of Arctiin also increased the function of the protein associated with the suppressor in acting to inhibit cell proliferation and tumor development.

Taken together, Herbal Burdock may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Burdock anti-cancer possibilities.

Herbal Andrographis Modulates Immune Function To the Body Needs, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Andrographis paniculata may have a profound effect in enhancing the function of the immune system against diseases development, some studies found.

The immune system is a set of cells which have a unique function to protect our body against antigens or infectious agents that comprises of the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

It is a made of special cells (white blood cells), antibodies, tissues (bone marrow), and organs (the spleen) defend people against germs and microorganisms every day.

There are 3 types of immunity can be classified as the following
* The innate immunity is also known as natural immunity that every human born with.

* The adaptive immunity is the type of immunity that develops in the life of the individual.

* Passive immunity that borrows from the outside sources and can only last only a short period of time

There are 2 types of immune disorders
* Underactive immunity or immune deficiency. People with an underactive immune system are easy
to be infected  or sick all the times

* Overactive immune system or autoimmune diseases. In this case, the immune system attacks the host tissue, causing autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

In the finding a natural ingredient or formula for the treatment of immune dysfunction with no side effects, researchers at the Prin. K. M. Kundnani College of Pharmacy, launched an investigation to examine the immunomodulatory activity of HN-02, an extract containing a mixture of andrographolides.

The pure powder form of the mixture of andrographolides.was evaluated at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5 mg/kg on different in vivo and in vitro experimental models.

Application of the mixture delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) caused by the injection of cyclophosphamide (CYP) in the mouse model.

Where cyclophosphamide (CP) is a medication used as chemotherapy and to suppress the immune system.

HN-02 treatment elevated the depressed hemagglutination antibody (HA) titer, the antibody and increased the number of plaque-forming cells (PFCs) in the spleen cells of mice caused by injection of CYP.

HN-02 treatment stimulated phagocytosis in the immune system and increased levels of white blood cells in the tested mice.

These results strongly indicated HN-02 has the ability to enhance immune function by modulating the immune responses which were altered during antigen interaction and reversing the immunosuppression induced by CYP.

Furthermore, according to the Amala Cancer Research Centre in the examine the natural whole herb function in the modulation of immune responses against tumor cells, Andrographis paniculata extract (APE) and its isolated compound andrographolide (ANDLE) exert a clinically significant effect on cell-mediated immune responses in normal and tumor-bearing control animals.

Treatment with APE and ANDLE significantly enhanced natural killer cell activity in normal and tumor-bearing animals on the fifth day,

Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity was also increased in APE as well as ANDLE on day 11-treated normal and tumor-bearing animal compared to untreated tumor-bearing control animals.

Moreover, treatment of APE and ANDLE significantly elevated the production of interleukin-2 which regulates the activities of white blood cells (leukocytes, often lymphocytes) and interferon-gamma which is critical for innate and adaptive immunity in normal and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma-bearing animals.

These results firmly indicated that herbal Andrographis may be considered functional food in the enhancement of the immune function against foreign stimuli and micro pathogens.

Herbal Burdock, the Natural Alternative for Antibiotic with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Burdock may be the next pharmaceutical target of extract a single ingredient for the treatment of infectious diseases, some scientists found.

Infectious diseases are a class of diseases caused by the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisted of a single cell with a simple internal structure.

Most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious disease caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Most cases of bacterial invasion are met with the first line immune white blood cells. In the active division of bacteria in the acute phase of infectious, the immune systematic response activated the production of the proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all bacteria.

However, if the immune fail to kill off all the bacteria within the 3 - 8 weeks period, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.

Not all bacteria are bad, some play an important role to boost the immune function. Dr. Hsin-Jung Wu, the lead author in the study the effect of gut microbiota in immune homeostasis and autoimmunity, said, " The gut microbiota that resides in the gastrointestinal tract provides essential health benefits to its host, particularly by regulating immune homeostasis" and " gut microbiota regulates innate and adaptive immune homeostasis, which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases:.

In other words, gut microbiota promotes and balances the immune system in eliminating invading pathogens, while still maintaining self-tolerance to avoid autoimmunity, the critical roles of the immune system for the body’s health.

Burdock is the plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.

The plant has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

The ingredients of herbal Burdock include carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colorings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

In the finding a natural ingredient or whole foods to replace the conventional antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infection, the research team of infectious diseases at the University of Ribeirão Preto evaluated the antibacterial activity of a phytotherapeutic agent prepared from an ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) extracted from Arctium lappa.

The study includes 27 maxillary canines inoculated with a mixed bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans.

The teeth were divided into three groups and their canals filled with:
* Group 1: calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol;

* Group 2, a paste containing AcOEt fraction of A. lappa and propylene glycol; and

* Group 3, propylene glycol (control).

Observation of the 7, 14 and 30 days, when three teeth from each group were opened, researchers found that group 2 treated by the Burdock extract showed a severe growth at 7 days, but no growth at 14 and 30 days, compared to mild growth in group 1 and control.

These results clearly indicated phytotherapeutic agent extracted from an AcOEt fraction of herbal Burdock process a strong antibacterial activity against the growth of all the microorganisms.

In bacterial straits Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans used for the investigation of the antimicrobial activity of rough extracts from leaves of Arctium lappa and their phases, researchers at the University of Ribeirão Preto (UNAERP) showed some bioactive compounds with chemical structures of different polarities were found to exert the effect of the extract through different phases of inhibition, depending on the target microorganisms.

Dr. Holetz FB, the lead scientist at the Universidade Estadual de Maringá in the investigation of the ethnobotanical use of the herbal species for the treatment of various infectious diseases, explained, herbal Burdock, one the Brazilian folk medicine may be used for the treatment of chronic infectious diseases induced by bacteria and yeasts.

Herbal Burdock was one out 13 herbal medicine was studied for its antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeasts, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli.

The evidence showed that herbal Burdock processed abundant bioactive constituents may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases without inducing any side effects.

Herbal Arnica, the Potential Colon Cancer Functional Herb

By Kyle J. Norton

Herb Arnica may be the next target of the pharmaceutical companies to identify a single ingredient medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

Colon cancer is a slow and predictable condition characterized by irregular cell growth on the colon tissue.

The cause of colon cancer is a result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the colon.

Most cases of colon cancer start at the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. At this stage, the tumor is very small and does not cause any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, colon cancer may cause symptoms of a change of bowel habits, severe rectal bleeding or blood in your stool and persistently abdominal pain.

If you experience some of the above symptoms that last more than 4 weeks, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon cancer.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90% and only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Researchers do not know why people with the same health condition, family history and diet pattern, some are susceptible to colon cells DNA alternation while others do not.

Out of a number of risk factors, genetic preposition has been under intensifying studies by many scientists.

Dr.Glaser EM in a finding the genetic mutation associated with the risk colon cancer said, "Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the United States. Although both genetic and environmental factors play a role in colorectal tumorigenesis" and "single genes that confer a susceptibility to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Because these genes are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, offspring of carriers have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene mutation and its associated risk".

The genetic mutation hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).genes  has a prevalence rate of 1 in 500, and causes about 2% to 3% of all colorectal cancers.

More importantly, genetic testing for the FAP and HNPCC genes is now available for everyone.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Colon Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.

Besides containing contain helenalin as it main ingredient used as anti-inflammatory agent in herbal medicine, herbal Arnica also contains 11,13- dihydrohelenaline, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.

In the concerns of the aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon-rectal mucosal epithelial cell proliferation in patients with colon cancer, researchers at the University of São Paulo examine the anti-colon cancer of chemical compound isolated from the Lychnophora ericoides Mart. (Brazilian herbal arnica).

50 included in the study was randomly assigned to the followings Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups.
* The groups G1 to G4 were given 4 injections of the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH).

* The G2 group received Lychnophora ericoides (LE) extracts for 6 wks.

* The groups G3 and G4 received LE for 4 wk and 2 wk, respectively, at the postinitiation and initiation phases of colonic carcinogenesis.

* The group G5 was the control.

42 days after the first injections of DMH for the neoplasic induction, researchers found that
* Groups G1 demonstrated an increase of the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and cancer cells proliferation induced by DMH.

* Group G4 after treatment of LE inhibited a clinically significant decrease in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and attenuated the increase of cancer cells proliferation induced by DMH.

These results suggested that Lychnophora ericoides extracts were effective against the development of colon cancer through suppressing the initiation and progression of colonic carcinogenesis.

Continuously, to differentiate the effect of herbal Arnica effects in the inhibition of cancers, researchers examine the cytotoxicity of 21 flavonoids and 5 sesquiterpene lactones, isolated from herbal Arnica in a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, and in COLO 320, a human colorectal cancer cell line.

Compared to cisplatin, a novel chemo drug, most flavonoids showed moderate to low cytotoxicity against COLO 320 cancer cell line.

However, flavone jaceosidin of the sesquiterpene lactones was found to be the most effective compound.in displaying the cytotoxicity.

Application of the maximum half-life concentration of 1.0 microM exerted the most cytotoxic effect against COLO 320.

Compared to GLC4, COLO 320 was more sensitive than for many flavonoids (especially for flavones).

The finding strongly indicated that herbal Arnica bioactive compounds process potential activity in inhibiting the onset and progression of colon cancer.

Therefore, herbal Arnica containing abundant bioactive compounds may have a potential in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, depending on the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter in the human study.

Herbal Butterbur, The Best in the Promotion of Antioxidant Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may be the potential target to extract a single ingredient for the treatment of oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression free radicals compared to levels of antioxidant or suppression of the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host body, compared to expression of free radicals.

The imbalanced ratio of free radical and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host that counter the overexpression of free radicals has been found to facilitate the early onset of numbers of chronic ailments, such as cancers.

Free radicals are naturally produced from daily normal essential metabolic processes in the human body. However,  some external sources such as exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals can also increase the expression of free radicals in the body.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with the unpaired electron in the outer ring and ready to donate or steal an electron from another molecule, leading to the chain reaction until they are stopped by the presence of the antioxidants or their outer ring are paired.

Overexpression of free radical chain reactive in the human body has been known to induce oxidative stress, causing damage to the cells,  proteins, and alternation of cell DNA. In this case, the application of an external source of antioxidants such as synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole may be helpful to restore the balance of these 2 types of  molecule.

Hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radical are hight reactive and important free radical  associated with many chronic diseases.

Dr. V. Lobo, in the concern of the overexpression of free radicals in the induction of, vary human chronic illness conducted a study to examine the impacts of free radicals, antioxidants and functional foods in human health said in summary, "Free radicals damage contributes to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataract, and cancer. Antioxidants prevent free radical induced tissue damage by preventing the formation of radicals, scavenging them, or by promoting their decomposition".

(More importantly)" Synthetic antioxidants are recently reported to be dangerous to human health. Thus the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years. In addition to endogenous antioxidant defense systems, consumption of dietary and plant-derived antioxidants appears to be a suitable alternative. Dietary and other components of plants form a major source of antioxidants".

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, Riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene, and ethylene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

In the finding the natural ingredient from the botanical plants which process a significant antioxidant activity without inducing any side effects, researchers at the Second Military Medical University looked into a bioactive compound isolated from the herbal Butterbur.

Four novel bakkenolides - bakkenolide-Ia ( 1), bakkenolide-IIa ( 2), bakkenolide-IIIa ( 3) and bakkenolide-IVa ( 4) - were isolated from the extract of the rhizome of Petasites tricholobus.

All 4 compounds demonstrated the neuroprotective activity by reversing the neurons damage exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults.

The results of this efficacy were associated with the antioxidant properties of the 4 compound in inhibiting the oxidative stress caused by the oxygen-glucose deprivation.

The finding indicated that herbal Butterbur not only processed a significant activity in protecting the brain cells against oxidative stress due to overexpression of free radical but also promoted the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host tissue.

In hyphenated HPLC techniques used to identify the structures and antioxidant activities without prior purification of compounds, researchers found that herbal Butterbur process a number of bioactive compounds, including 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA), fukinolic acid (FA), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3,5-DCQA) exert a strong antioxidant free radical scavenging activity.

The greatest radical scavenging capacity was found in the leaf (23.09% of total antioxidant capacity) and root (26.47%) extracts.

The relative radical scavenging portion of quercetin-3-O-(6″-acetyl)-β-glucopyranoside (QAG) was only 3.41% in the leaves and KAG did not show any radical scavenging activity.

These results firmly suggested that herbal Butterbur processes a significant antioxidant property. However, single ingredient isolated from the herb may express different levels of antioxidant in a dose-depending manner.

Therefore, herbal Butterbur containing a high amount of antioxidant and bioactive compounds free radical scavengers may be considered a functional food for the promotion of antioxidant activity.
