Herbal Burdock, the Natural Alternative for Antibiotic with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Burdock may be the next pharmaceutical target of extract a single ingredient for the treatment of infectious diseases, some scientists found.

Infectious diseases are a class of diseases caused by the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisted of a single cell with a simple internal structure.

Most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious disease caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Most cases of bacterial invasion are met with the first line immune white blood cells. In the active division of bacteria in the acute phase of infectious, the immune systematic response activated the production of the proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all bacteria.

However, if the immune fail to kill off all the bacteria within the 3 - 8 weeks period, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.

Not all bacteria are bad, some play an important role to boost the immune function. Dr. Hsin-Jung Wu, the lead author in the study the effect of gut microbiota in immune homeostasis and autoimmunity, said, " The gut microbiota that resides in the gastrointestinal tract provides essential health benefits to its host, particularly by regulating immune homeostasis" and " gut microbiota regulates innate and adaptive immune homeostasis, which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases:.

In other words, gut microbiota promotes and balances the immune system in eliminating invading pathogens, while still maintaining self-tolerance to avoid autoimmunity, the critical roles of the immune system for the body’s health.

Burdock is the plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.

The plant has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

The ingredients of herbal Burdock include carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colorings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

In the finding a natural ingredient or whole foods to replace the conventional antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infection, the research team of infectious diseases at the University of Ribeirão Preto evaluated the antibacterial activity of a phytotherapeutic agent prepared from an ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) extracted from Arctium lappa.

The study includes 27 maxillary canines inoculated with a mixed bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans.

The teeth were divided into three groups and their canals filled with:
* Group 1: calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol;

* Group 2, a paste containing AcOEt fraction of A. lappa and propylene glycol; and

* Group 3, propylene glycol (control).

Observation of the 7, 14 and 30 days, when three teeth from each group were opened, researchers found that group 2 treated by the Burdock extract showed a severe growth at 7 days, but no growth at 14 and 30 days, compared to mild growth in group 1 and control.

These results clearly indicated phytotherapeutic agent extracted from an AcOEt fraction of herbal Burdock process a strong antibacterial activity against the growth of all the microorganisms.

In bacterial straits Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans used for the investigation of the antimicrobial activity of rough extracts from leaves of Arctium lappa and their phases, researchers at the University of Ribeirão Preto (UNAERP) showed some bioactive compounds with chemical structures of different polarities were found to exert the effect of the extract through different phases of inhibition, depending on the target microorganisms.

Dr. Holetz FB, the lead scientist at the Universidade Estadual de Maringá in the investigation of the ethnobotanical use of the herbal species for the treatment of various infectious diseases, explained, herbal Burdock, one the Brazilian folk medicine may be used for the treatment of chronic infectious diseases induced by bacteria and yeasts.

Herbal Burdock was one out 13 herbal medicine was studied for its antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeasts, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli.

The evidence showed that herbal Burdock processed abundant bioactive constituents may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases without inducing any side effects.

Herbal Arnica, the Potential Colon Cancer Functional Herb

By Kyle J. Norton

Herb Arnica may be the next target of the pharmaceutical companies to identify a single ingredient medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

Colon cancer is a slow and predictable condition characterized by irregular cell growth on the colon tissue.

The cause of colon cancer is a result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the colon.

Most cases of colon cancer start at the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. At this stage, the tumor is very small and does not cause any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, colon cancer may cause symptoms of a change of bowel habits, severe rectal bleeding or blood in your stool and persistently abdominal pain.

If you experience some of the above symptoms that last more than 4 weeks, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon cancer.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90% and only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Researchers do not know why people with the same health condition, family history and diet pattern, some are susceptible to colon cells DNA alternation while others do not.

Out of a number of risk factors, genetic preposition has been under intensifying studies by many scientists.

Dr.Glaser EM in a finding the genetic mutation associated with the risk colon cancer said, "Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the United States. Although both genetic and environmental factors play a role in colorectal tumorigenesis" and "single genes that confer a susceptibility to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Because these genes are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, offspring of carriers have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene mutation and its associated risk".

The genetic mutation hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).genes  has a prevalence rate of 1 in 500, and causes about 2% to 3% of all colorectal cancers.

More importantly, genetic testing for the FAP and HNPCC genes is now available for everyone.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Colon Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.

Besides containing contain helenalin as it main ingredient used as anti-inflammatory agent in herbal medicine, herbal Arnica also contains 11,13- dihydrohelenaline, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.

In the concerns of the aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon-rectal mucosal epithelial cell proliferation in patients with colon cancer, researchers at the University of São Paulo examine the anti-colon cancer of chemical compound isolated from the Lychnophora ericoides Mart. (Brazilian herbal arnica).

50 included in the study was randomly assigned to the followings Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups.
* The groups G1 to G4 were given 4 injections of the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH).

* The G2 group received Lychnophora ericoides (LE) extracts for 6 wks.

* The groups G3 and G4 received LE for 4 wk and 2 wk, respectively, at the postinitiation and initiation phases of colonic carcinogenesis.

* The group G5 was the control.

42 days after the first injections of DMH for the neoplasic induction, researchers found that
* Groups G1 demonstrated an increase of the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and cancer cells proliferation induced by DMH.

* Group G4 after treatment of LE inhibited a clinically significant decrease in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and attenuated the increase of cancer cells proliferation induced by DMH.

These results suggested that Lychnophora ericoides extracts were effective against the development of colon cancer through suppressing the initiation and progression of colonic carcinogenesis.

Continuously, to differentiate the effect of herbal Arnica effects in the inhibition of cancers, researchers examine the cytotoxicity of 21 flavonoids and 5 sesquiterpene lactones, isolated from herbal Arnica in a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, and in COLO 320, a human colorectal cancer cell line.

Compared to cisplatin, a novel chemo drug, most flavonoids showed moderate to low cytotoxicity against COLO 320 cancer cell line.

However, flavone jaceosidin of the sesquiterpene lactones was found to be the most effective compound.in displaying the cytotoxicity.

Application of the maximum half-life concentration of 1.0 microM exerted the most cytotoxic effect against COLO 320.

Compared to GLC4, COLO 320 was more sensitive than for many flavonoids (especially for flavones).

The finding strongly indicated that herbal Arnica bioactive compounds process potential activity in inhibiting the onset and progression of colon cancer.

Therefore, herbal Arnica containing abundant bioactive compounds may have a potential in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, depending on the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter in the human study.

Herbal Butterbur, The Best in the Promotion of Antioxidant Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may be the potential target to extract a single ingredient for the treatment of oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression free radicals compared to levels of antioxidant or suppression of the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host body, compared to expression of free radicals.

The imbalanced ratio of free radical and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host that counter the overexpression of free radicals has been found to facilitate the early onset of numbers of chronic ailments, such as cancers.

Free radicals are naturally produced from daily normal essential metabolic processes in the human body. However,  some external sources such as exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals can also increase the expression of free radicals in the body.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with the unpaired electron in the outer ring and ready to donate or steal an electron from another molecule, leading to the chain reaction until they are stopped by the presence of the antioxidants or their outer ring are paired.

Overexpression of free radical chain reactive in the human body has been known to induce oxidative stress, causing damage to the cells,  proteins, and alternation of cell DNA. In this case, the application of an external source of antioxidants such as synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole may be helpful to restore the balance of these 2 types of  molecule.

Hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radical are hight reactive and important free radical  associated with many chronic diseases.

Dr. V. Lobo, in the concern of the overexpression of free radicals in the induction of, vary human chronic illness conducted a study to examine the impacts of free radicals, antioxidants and functional foods in human health said in summary, "Free radicals damage contributes to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataract, and cancer. Antioxidants prevent free radical induced tissue damage by preventing the formation of radicals, scavenging them, or by promoting their decomposition".

(More importantly)" Synthetic antioxidants are recently reported to be dangerous to human health. Thus the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years. In addition to endogenous antioxidant defense systems, consumption of dietary and plant-derived antioxidants appears to be a suitable alternative. Dietary and other components of plants form a major source of antioxidants".

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, Riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene, and ethylene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

In the finding the natural ingredient from the botanical plants which process a significant antioxidant activity without inducing any side effects, researchers at the Second Military Medical University looked into a bioactive compound isolated from the herbal Butterbur.

Four novel bakkenolides - bakkenolide-Ia ( 1), bakkenolide-IIa ( 2), bakkenolide-IIIa ( 3) and bakkenolide-IVa ( 4) - were isolated from the extract of the rhizome of Petasites tricholobus.

All 4 compounds demonstrated the neuroprotective activity by reversing the neurons damage exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults.

The results of this efficacy were associated with the antioxidant properties of the 4 compound in inhibiting the oxidative stress caused by the oxygen-glucose deprivation.

The finding indicated that herbal Butterbur not only processed a significant activity in protecting the brain cells against oxidative stress due to overexpression of free radical but also promoted the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host tissue.

In hyphenated HPLC techniques used to identify the structures and antioxidant activities without prior purification of compounds, researchers found that herbal Butterbur process a number of bioactive compounds, including 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA), fukinolic acid (FA), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3,5-DCQA) exert a strong antioxidant free radical scavenging activity.

The greatest radical scavenging capacity was found in the leaf (23.09% of total antioxidant capacity) and root (26.47%) extracts.

The relative radical scavenging portion of quercetin-3-O-(6″-acetyl)-β-glucopyranoside (QAG) was only 3.41% in the leaves and KAG did not show any radical scavenging activity.

These results firmly suggested that herbal Butterbur processes a significant antioxidant property. However, single ingredient isolated from the herb may express different levels of antioxidant in a dose-depending manner.

Therefore, herbal Butterbur containing a high amount of antioxidant and bioactive compounds free radical scavengers may be considered a functional food for the promotion of antioxidant activity.

Herbal Aloe Vera Gobbles Up Cancer Cells in Vivo and Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Aloe Vera may be the next target for the pharmaceutical companies to extract a single ingredient for the treatment of cancers, some scientists suggested.

Cancers are a class of medical diseases associated with cell growth irregularly and disorderly in some specific tissue and organs.

Most cancer starts at the cell on the surface of the inner lining of organ's tissue. At the later stage, cancer cells can be found in the deeper of layers of the infected organ.

In the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organ through the circulation of fluids and blood.

The causes of cancer are the results of the alternation of healthy cell DNA. Researchers do not why the health cells DNA are alternated.

Normally, healthy cells undergo a certain number of cell cycle divisions than die. In a cancerous cell, cell division undergoes indefinitely.

According to the statistic, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

The genetic mutation of the cancer cell may be associated with certain risk factors. Epidemiological studies suggested that long-term exposure to carcinogens, the increased in age, gender, inherited genetic defects and skin type can increase the risk the cancer onset.
Most common and general symptoms of cancer are an unintended weight loss, lump, fatigue, loss of appetite and persistent localized symptoms and localized pain in the later stage.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor right the way to rule out the possibility of cancer.

Out of numbers of the risk factor, genetic preposition has been under intensive studied by many scientists.

Dr. Eric T, the lead author in the study of genetic implication on the cancer risk said, "Genetic testing for inherited cancer risk is now widely used to target individuals for screening and prevention" and

"Overall, 17,340 PVs were identified in 17,000 (6.7%) of the tested individuals. The pathogenic variants (PV) positive rate was 9.8% among individuals with a personal cancer history, compared to 4.7% in unaffected individuals. PVs were most common in BRCA1/2 (42.2%), other breast cancer (BR) genes (32.9%), and the LS genes (13.2%)".

These results clearly stated that people who carry certain mutated genes are at the substantial risk of cancer onset, compared to those who do not.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.

Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc.

It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera are amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

They all work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.

In the finding, a natural ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer without inducing side effects, researchers at the National Chung Hsing University conducted a study to compare the efficacy of Emodin and Aloe-Emodin, the major bioactive compound found in herbal Aloe Vera.

By analyzing the estrogenic activity as phytoestrogens on the estrogen receptor α (ER α ) activation and breast cancer cell growth, application of both emodin and aloe-emodin are capable of inhibiting breast cancer cell proliferation by reducing the ER α protein levels which has been found in high levels in patient with breast cancer thereby suppressing ER α transcriptional (mRNA) activation..

High expression of ERα mRNA is found associated with patients with breast cancer.

Breast cancer treatment with aloe-emodin also decreases the expression of the levels of ERα associated with the protein that stimulate the division of breast cancer cells by increasing the cancer cells degradation.

The efficacy of aloe-emodin inhibited breast cancer proliferation and induced apoptosis is attributed to the breaking down the cytoplasm of ER α protein in the breast cancer cells.

The results suggested that aloe-emodin suppressed breast cell proliferation emodin by targeting ER α protein expression through distinct mechanisms.

Further demonstration of the effect of aloe-emodin on the risk of cancer, researchers examined whether aloe emodin exerts a similar effect on the growth of human cervical cancer cells, HeLa.

Human cervical cancer cells, HeLa used in the experiment was treated by different doses of aloe emodin for 1-5 days,.

Measured by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay, aloe-emodin displays significant effects in the inhibition of the growth of HeLa cells in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations ranging between 2.5 and 40 micromol/L.

Aloe-emodin induces HeLa cells death by disrupting the cell cycle division at the G2/M phase, according to the flow cytometric analysis.

The effects of aloe emodin inhibited the human by increasing the expression of proteins associated with cell death programming and reducing the expression of proteins associated with cancer prefiltration and survival.

Most importantly, after taking into account co and confounders, researchers discovered, aloe-emodin also activates the enzyme associated with the break down the protein of  ER α and deactivates the enzyme associated with cell proliferation

Taken altogether,  Aloe vera with the abundant aloe-emodin may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for treatment of cancer without inducing adverse effects.

Herbal Cayenne May Process A Potency to Cure Allergic Rhinitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal cayenne may be a pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of allergic rhinitis with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Nonallergic rhinitis is a condition with symptoms resemble an allergy causes of rhinitis but without a known cause.

Chronic forms of rhinitis occurred in the absence of any detectable specific IgE against relevant aeroallergens in its broadest sense can be called chronic nonallergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is caused by the immune overreaction when a person breathes in an allergen such as pollen, mold, animal dander, or dust, leading to the irritation and inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose.

Most common symptoms of allergic rhinitis are the stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing, and post-nasal drip.

Contrast to general belief, allergic rhinitis is not the syndrome which comes and goes depending on the seasons.

Untreated allergic rhinitis can lead to complications of chronic nasal inflammation and obstruction, a leading cause of upper respiratory tract infection.

There is some strong evidence suggested that allergic rhinitis can affect the quality of life, productivity, and other comorbid conditions, including asthma.

The World Health Organization in the differentiation fo the condition, suggesting that the treatment of allergic rhinitis should include a combination of patient education, allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and immunotherapy

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The kitchen spice has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

In the finding a natural formula for the treatment of allergic rhinitis with no side effects, researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine examine the efficacy and safety of ICX72 or Sinus Buster, a proprietary homeopathic preparation of Capsicum annum and Eucalyptol, versus placebo.

In the total of Forty-two consented subjects meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria randomized to ICX72 (n = 20) or control (n = 22) administered twice daily over 2 weeks, the primary endpoint was changed in total nasal symptom scores (TNSS) from baseline to end of the study.

During the study, application of ICX72 exhibited significant differences in changes from baseline to end of study for TNSS and each ISS (P < .01), compared to placebo.

ICX72 exerted a significantly faster relief at 52.6 seconds.

The formula also improved nasal congestion, sinus pain, sinus pressure, and headache at 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes, persisting at 60 minutes for nasal congestion and sinus pain.

No subjects experienced rebound congestion or impaired olfaction at the end of the study.

There is no adverse effect in the treatment group.

These result firmly suggested that intranasal capsaicin used continuously over 2 weeks, rapidly and safely improves symptoms in rhinitis subjects with a significant NAR component.

Further analysis of the effect of intranasal capsaicin, researchers conducted a double-blind double-dummy parallel groups trial to determine whether a more practical capsaicin application schedule is equally effective.

Thirty patients were randomized into two different treatment regimens: one group received capsaicin five times on the first day at 1-h intervals, followed by a placebo dummy once every second or third day for a total of five treatments 2 weeks after the capsaicin application (group A).

The other group (B) received the placebo dummy five times on the first day followed by capsaicin once every second or third day for a total of five treatments 2 weeks after the placebo application.

According to the reading, visual analog scale scores for overall nasal symptoms, group A showed significant deeper decrease rhinorrhea and nasal blockage, compared to group B.

There is a significant reduction in the cold dry air responsiveness up to 9 months after therapy in both groups, reflecting a decrease in nasal hyperreactivity.

Taken altogether, Herbal cayenne containing bioactive compound capsaicin may be considered a functional spice for the treatment of allergic rhinitis with no side effects.

Ginger, May Be A Natural Alternative for Testosterone Hormone Therapy with No Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a pungent spice which processes a potential to increased levels of testosterone deficiency, particularly in the elderly with no side effects according to studies.

Testosterone is a steroid hormone found in humans made mostly from the testicles in men and a small amount in women's ovaries.

According to epidemiological studies, treatment for hypogonadism is on the rise, particularly in the population due to natural reduced production of levels of testosterone other than normal aging.

Testosterone production starts to produce significantly during puberty and dip after age 30.

In males, the early onset of reduced production of levels of testosterone is associated with a highly prevalent burden of comorbid medical conditions and polypharmacy complicates compared to those of normal aging,

Also, low levels of testosterone in the males are associated with the early onset of metabolic syndrome in the induction of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Conventional medicine used for the treatment in this population is found to be a unique challenge to clinicians.

Apart from normal aging, low levels of testosterone are found to induce symptoms of decreased sex drive,  low energy, weight gain, the risk of depression, and moodiness, loss of hair and thinner bones.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, you may have low levels of testosterone. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Dr. Giagulli VA, in examining the complications of testosterone in men wrote, "Testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS) induces several negative effects that generally involve different organs such as testis, bone, skeletal muscle, and heart, leading to reduction in testis function, causing osteoporosis, strongly reducing muscle mass, decreasing exercise capacity and strength and facilitating heart failure".

And, " Approximately 25% of patients affected by chronic heart failure (CHF) is characterized by plasma Testosterone (T) levels below normal ranges also related to disease progression".

These results clearly suggested apart from normal aging, males with testosterone deficiency are associated with the complications of many ailments.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural compound which processes a function in enhancing and protecting primary sex hormone in males examined the effects of ginger activity in enhancing testosterone production in males.

By searching the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for English language articles (full texts or abstracts) from November 1991 through August 2018 using the keywords "ginger" and "Zingiber officinale" versus "testosterone" linking the effects of ginger on testosterone researchers found that ginger supplementation, particularly in oxidative stress conditions, enhances testosterone production in males.

The mechanisms by which this occurs mainly by enhancing luteinizing hormone (LH) production in stimulating the Leydig cell production of testosterone, increasing the level of cholesterol in synthesizing male sex steroid, testosterone (T), by reducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the testes.

Furthermore, application of ginger also inhibited the expression of free radical by promoting the activity of the antioxidant enzymes.

Ginger also normalized the blood glucose by increasing blood flow to the testes.

Moreover, ginger improved production of testosterone by increasing testicular weight and recycling testosterone receptors.

The finding strongly supports the use of ginger in the enhanced testosterone production for treatment of diseases associated with the testosterone deficiency.

In order to reveal more information about ginger in the production of testosterone by examing the
ginger effects on multiple animal models, including 60adult male Sprague Dawley rats divided into * Group A served as normal control,

* Group B received 0.3% lead acetate in drinking water,

*Group C and group D received supplementary 0.5 and 1 gm/Kg body weight of ginger respectively along with lead acetate in drinking water.

During the experiments, co-administration with different doses of ginger showed a significant rise in the testosterone levels in of teste, compared to the lead-treated group.

Interestingly, ginger application at different doses showed no significant change of LH levels, compared to the rise in the previous ginger treatment,

These results strongly suggested there must other compounds from ginger that exhibits the increased levels of LH that is not mentioned in both studies.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment for diseases associated with testosterone deficiency.

Piperine, the Anti Hyperglycemic Plant Base Compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Bioactive piperine may have a strong and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of hyperglycemia in the management of type 2 diabetes, according to the studies.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood sugar which is considered a hallmark sign of diabetes (both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes) and prediabetes.

Hyperglycemia doesn't cause symptoms until glucose values are significantly elevated to the levels above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). Most common symptoms of hyperglycemia include headaches, fatigue, blurred vision, hunger, confusion, and trouble with concentrating.

Diabetes is a chronic and medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in pancreas died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

According to the statistic, in the US, approximately 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes In 2015.

The disease is on the rise at an alarming rate. Most cases of hypoglycemia are the results of a medical condition such as hypothyroidism, pancreatitis, long-term use of certain medication such as prednisone, estrogens, beta-blockers, glucagon, and stress.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy lifestyle, in fact, is the major cause of the onset of hyperglycemia.

According to the study of a total of 485 subjects of Bai Ku Yao and 501 subjects of Han Chinese ethnicity aged 40 years and older surveyed by a stratified cluster random sampling technique, the prevalence of hyperlipidemia was significantly lower among ethnic Bai Ku Yao than among ethnic Han individuals, which might mainly be attributed to the more favorable dietary patterns, lifestyle choices, and physical activity levels in the former ethnic group.

These results strongly suggested that an unhealthy diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and low fruits and vegetables are associated with the onset and early onset of hyperglycemia.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention of diabetes, a metabolic disorder and emerging pandemic of the 21st century, researchers investigated the anti-diabetes activity of piperine, the chief alkaloid present in Piper nigrum (black pepper). The study included albino mice induced diabetes by injection of alloxan.

The tested mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 6). In acute study, drugs were administered orally as: control (2% gum acacia, 10 mL/kg), standard (metformin 150 mg/kg), P10 (piperine 10 mg/kg), P20 (piperine 20 mg/kg) and P40 (piperine 40 mg/kg) and drug intervention for subacute study consisted of once daily oral administration for 14 days of 2% gum acacia 10 mL/kg, metformin 250 mg/kg, and piperine 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively.

By examing the blood glucose levels before and at 1, 2, 3 and 4 h post dosing, respectively, in the acute study and on day 7 and 14 in the subacute study, researchers showed that acute study showed that at 2 h post-dosing piperine at high dose of 40 mg/kg showed a significant rise in blood glucose level (p < 0.05) in comparison to control group.

Contrastly, significant blood glucose lowering effect was seen with piperine at a dose of 20 mg/kg on day 14 (p < 0.05) in the subacute study.

These results clearly suggested that subacute administration of piperine has a statistically significant antihyperglycemic activity while acutely it raises blood glucose at high doses.

In other words, in order for the piperine to exert antihyperglycemic activity, the initial dose should be reduced and increased gradually during the course of treatment.

The G. Pulla Reddy College of Pharmacy in the evaluation of the associated among Piperine and P. longum is a known inhibitor of various enzymes (CYP isozymes) responsible for the biotransformation of drugs, suggested that by inhibiting the metabolism of drugs, piperine improves the bioavailability of drugs.

Truly, pretreatment of Piperine (10 mg/kg) accompanied by the anti-hyperglycemic activity of nateglinide (CAS no: 105816-04-4) exerted significantly increased the concentration of the drug. In other words, nateglinide is more effective in inhibiting hyperglycemia compared to the drug when it is applied alone.

Dr. Sama V, the lead author, after taking into account co and confounders said, "The synergistic anti-hyperglycemic activity of nateglinide when administered with piperine can be attributed to increased plasma concentration of nateglinide" and " The results of this study demonstrate that piperine could be used as a potential bioenhancer along with nateglinide".

In diabetes-induced oxidative stress in 30-day streptozotocin-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats, piperine treatment intraperitoneally at the dose of 10 mg/kg/day for 14 days also reversed the diabetic effects caused by oxidative stress by improving the levels of antioxidant enzymes and inhibiting the levels of free radicals.

Taken altogether, piperine, a bioactive compound found in black pepper may be used for the prevention and treatment of abnormally high blood glucose in patients with diabetes, with no side effects
