Herbal Anise, The Herbal Remedy Which Protects Our Body Against Viral Infectious Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Anise may be the next potential target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of viral infection, some scientists suggested.

Infection is a condition caused the invasion of stimuli and micro pathogens, including the viral infection.

Viral infection is a disease caused by the successful entering and multiplying of a virus in the body.

Anti-viral effects is an act of certain substances to cause the destruction of a virus.

In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of virus, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,

The viral infection o\has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.

The white blood cells in the systematic immune response in the acute phase of infection stimulate the production of the proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to protect our body by killing off the invaders.

The battle between the immune white blood cell and viral invaders in most cases an in the flavor of the side of the immune system, the invaders are killed and the infection is healed.

However, if the immune system can not kill off the invaders with 3 - 8 weeks, it then will adapt to the change, leading chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.

Besides the main ingredient Anethole, herbal Anise also contains, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the finding a natural antiviral ingredient or whole without inducing any side effects, researchers examined 3 antiviral and immunostimulating substances (LC1, LC2 and LC3) isolated from a hot water extract of seeds of Pimpinella anisum (herbal Anise).
The isolated substances were found to significantly anti antiviral activities against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and measles virus.

Application of LCs interfered with virus adsorption to the host cell surface and directly inactivate viruses.

The result indicated that the isolated compound protected the cell membrane against the penetration of the virus in the initiation of the first phase of infection.

Furthermore, injection of LCs also prevents the overexpression of protein associated with macrophages infected. In other words, PCs protects the white blood cells associated with the first line of the immune response against the viral invasion.

The results also inhibited the overproduction of the inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection.

Dr. Lee JB, the lead author said, " lignin-carbohydrate-protein complexes from P. anisum possessed potency as functional food ingredients against infectious diseases".

Moreover, the University of Heidelberg investigated the effect of anise oil, dwarf-pine oil and chamomile oil against different thymidine-kinase-positive (aciclovir-sensitive) and thymidine-kinase-negative (aciclovir-resistant) herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) strains also suggested that essential oil from herbal Anise displays a strong effect against tested viruses.

At maximum noncytotoxic concentrations of the Anise essential oils, significantly reduced the plaque formation by 96.6-99.9% when herpesviruses were preincubated with drugs before attachment to host cells.

Adding essential oil during the replication phase completely wiped out the possibility of viral infectivity.

Compared to the conventional medicine aciclovir, which is effective after attachment inside the infected cells, anise oil affected the virus by interrupting adsorption of herpesviruses and in a different manner.

The findings suggested that herbal Anise essential oils are capable of exerting a direct effect on HSV and might be useful in the treatment of drug-resistant viruses.

Taken all together, herbal anise may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for diseases associated with viral infection.

Herbal Catnip, The Potential Anti Chronic inflammatory Diseases Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient in reducing the risk and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, some studies suggested.

Inflammation is a systematic immune response caused by the production of proinflammatory cytokine activated by the white blood cells in the immune system responsible for the first line of defense.

In the early phase of bodily injury and damage, the reaction of the immune system also encompasses a wide range of pathophysiological responses to minimize tissue damage while enhancing the repair process.

Inflammation also can be caused by viruses and bacteria, some of the most common stimuli of inflammation by either entering or destroying the host body cells or producing endotoxins, respectively.

Malfunctioning immunological responses attack the body tissue can incite an inappropriate and chronic inflammation.

Believe or not, tissues die from a lack of oxygen or nutrients can also cause inflammation.

Chronic inflammation in another hand, caused by the immune response that can not kill off all infectious agents in the acute phase of infection.

Some researchers argued that the evolution of the immune system is to kill off all infectious stimuli or pathogen within 3 - 8 weeks, otherwise, the immune system will adapt to their existence, in another word, chronic inflammation.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, cold and flu, skin irritation stimulates sweating, promote menstruation, etc.

Besides the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, herbal catnip also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.

On finding an effective anti-inflammatory natural ingredient or whole food with little or side effects, researchers at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University examined herbal Catnip antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities.

A total of 24 male Wister rats weighing 225 ± 25 gm were included in the study, the experimental groups. were randomly injected with essential oil of NP intraperitoneally at the doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg with control rats received equal volume (2 ml/kg) of normal saline.

All the doses of essential oil of herbal Catnip showed a strong antinociceptive activity compared to the control.

The highest dose of 200 mg/kg reduced the pain sensation in the tail flick (p <0.01), according to the formalin test.

Injection of the dose at 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly reduced the inflammation in tested subjects paw edema.

These results suggested that the natural ingredient of herbal Catnip essential oil may minimize both the acute and chronic forms of nociception and may have a potential role against inflammation.

Furthermore, the study by the Tarbiat Modares University to evaluate the similar effect of Catnip filed a similar result.

Using the tail-flick and formalin test pain models and the paw edema model of inflammation similar those of the above study in the male Wistar rats, application of essential oil dose-dependently produced analgesia in the acute pain models, including the tail-flick and the first phase of the formalin test.

In the late phase of the formalin test, as a model of chronic pain, the essential oil significantly reduced the pain-induced behavior.

Injection of essential oil exerted a potent anti-inflammatory effect found in the in the formalin-induced paw inflammation model and significant reduction of the paw edema in all applied doses.

The efficacy of herbal Catnip essential oil inhibited both the acute pain and chronic pain and inflammation probably were attributed to its interaction with both central and peripheral nervous system.

Taken altogether, Herbal Catnip may be considered an anti-inflammatory herbal medicine for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease without inducing any side effect.

Herbal Calendula, the Natural and Potent Neuroprotective Functional Herb

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Calendula may have a potential and profound effect in protecting the neurons integrity against the onset of neuroprotective effects.

Neuroprotective effect is a protection against the damage of the brain cells.

The nerve system is a complex network including the brain and spinal cord with a unique function in transmitting information or signals from and to the brain and spinal cord from different parts of the body.

The nerve system in the human has evolved over thousands of the year to enhance the survivals of the human species by the rapid response to the change of the environmental factors and adapting to the change of environment.

The causes of neuro diseases are associated with the damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system (CNS), including the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord.

However, some of the most common causes of neuro diseases are associated with neurotoxicity, the term which refers to damage to the brain or spinal cord caused by exposure to natural or man-made toxic substances, leading to gradual loss of neurons that interfere with the function of the nerve system in transmitting information to other parts of the body.

There are many factors associated with the onset of neurotoxicities, such as characteristics of the neurotoxin, the doses of exposure, and the ability to metabolize and excrete the toxin.

Accumulation of toxic chemicals over the long-term in the nerve system can overwhelm the protective factors, leading to neurotoxic symptoms of paralysis or weakness in the limbs. altered sensation, tingling, and numbness in the limbs, prolonged headache, and vision loss, depending on the brain area of toxicity.

In elderly, the neuro-toxicity is also found to speed up the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, leading to symptoms of loss of memory and cognitive dysfunction, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

In the concern that oxidative stress (OS) and nitric oxide mechanisms proposed in 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced neurotoxicity, scientists at the Sree Siddaganga College of Pharmacy examined the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and estrogenic effects of Calendula officinalis Linn. flower extract (COE) neuroprotective against the experimental model.

The study included numbers of rat induced neurotoxicity by the injection of  3-NP.

Observing behavioral changes, OS and striatal damage in rat brain suggested that neurotoxic rat was accompanied by significant alterations in animal behavior, oxidative defense system evidenced by raised levels of LPO and nitrite concentration, and depletion of antioxidant levels.

These examinations showed that 3-NP caused a significant damage to the rat brain by increasing expression of free radicals and suppressing production of antioxidant enzymes by the host body.

The injection also enhanced the production of inflammatory cytokines which have a strong effect in the blood vessels constriction and the loss of neuronal cells in the striatal region

Application of the herbal extract significantly attenuated behavioral alterations, oxidative damage and striatal neuronal loss in 3-NP-treated animals.

These results showed that COE is protective against 3-NP-induced neurotoxicity in rats through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and estrogenic properties.

With an aim to determine the effect of Calendula officinalis Linn. flower extract (COE) in the inhibition of excess monosodium glutamate (MSG), a popular flavor enhancer used in food industries in the induction of neurotoxicity, researchers conducted an experiment to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of COE on MSG-induced neurotoxicity in rats.

Adult Wistar rats selected to the study were administered systemically for 7 days with MSG and after one h of MSG injection before treated with COE (100 and 200 mg/kg) orally.

Before treated with COE, infected rat showed a significant alteration in animal behavior, oxidative defense (raised levels of LPO, nitrite concentration, depletion of antioxidant levels) and hippocampal neuronal histology.

These result indicated that MSG displays similar effects to those of 3-NP in facilitating the imbalance of the ratio of the free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the tested rats.

Observation of the result after injection of COE, researchers found that COE only restores the balance of the free radicals and antioxidant ratio but also inhibits the death of neuron cells in the brain.

The neuroprotective effect of COE was attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, suggested by Dr. Shivasharan BD, the lead scientist.

Taken altogether, Herbal Calendula may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of neurotoxicity and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of neuro diseases induced by toxicity.

Apricot, the Most Prominent Fruit for the Prevention and Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Apricot may have a potential for the cure of pancreatic cancer without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas.

Most primary pancreatic cancer starts with the alternated DNA cells on the surface of the inner lining of the pancreas organ.

At the advanced stage, the malignant cells in the pancreas can travel a distance way to infect other tissue and organ through lymph and blood.

Including all the stages, the 5 years survival rate of pancreatic cancer is 7% and it is considered the most rapidly fatal cancer.
Most people at the early stage of pancreatic cancer do not experience any symptoms. However, at the later stage, as the tumor has grown large enough, it can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, leading to localized symptoms and severe pain.

The exact causes of pancreatic cancer are unknown. Age, gender, race, family history. and inherited genetic syndromes were found to associate to the risk factor of the onset of the disease, epidemiologically.

Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factors that cause the development of pancreatic cancer are found in patients associated with a history of tobacco use and obesity.

Dr. Alguacil J in the study to examine the association between noncigarette tobacco use (i.e., cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco) and pancreatic cancer risk among nonsmokers of cigarettes, said, "Cigarette smoking is an important and well-established cause of pancreatic cancer." and "Long-term use of smokeless tobacco (i.e., >20 years) was also associated with a nonsignificant increased risk" and "heavy use of smokeless tobacco, and to a lesser extent, cigar smoking may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer among nonsmokers of cigarettes".

These result suggested cigarettes and noncigarette smoking are associated with the increased risk of pancreatic cancer in a type-dependent manner.

In the obesity front, Dr, Michaud DS in the study "Obesity and Pancreatic Cancer" said, "obesity early in adulthood is strongly associated with future risk of pancreatic cancer and that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor. There is increasing evidence suggesting long-standing diabetes type 2 and insulin resistance are important etiological factors of this disease, providing a strong mechanistic link to obesity".

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified with the family of the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

The chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

The research team on cancer program at the Shimane University showed that MK615 produced from Japanese apricot and contains several cyclic triterpenes, such as oleanolic and ursolic acids may have an effect in the inhibition of pancreatic cancer.

The experiments were performed on several human cancer cell lines exposed to MK615 for 7 days and in vivo growth of human pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa-2 cells.

Application of MK615 inhibited the growth of several human cancer cell lines in a concentration-dependent way.

Pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa-2 cells were highly sensitive to the growth-inhibiting effects of MK615.

Treatment with MK615 preferentially induced cell death in human cancer cells without causing harm to the nearby cells such as human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and mouse bone marrow cells.

MIAPaCa-2 cells incubated with MK615 in the presence of antioxidant, growth-inhibition was significantly reduced.

MK615 induced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in the exertion of cytotoxicity to the cancer cells but not in HUVEC.

Finally, researchers also found that MK615, in both the presence and absence of gemcitabine, significantly inhibited the growth of human pancreatic cancer cells as xenografts without apparent adverse effects.

The findings suggested that MK615, a supplement produced from Japanese apricot, processes a potential and therapeutic value in treating pancreatic cancers through a reactive oxygen species-dependent mechanism.

The study was published on the National Institutes of Health

Taken altogether, Apricot with abundant bioactive compounds such as oleanolic and ursolic acids may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Beetroot, The Potent Function Food In Normalizing Your High Blood Pressure with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Beet juice with high in NO may be coaidered an therapy for prevention and treatment of high blood pressure with no side effects, some studies found.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

The causes of high blood pressure are associated with some factors, including unhealthy lifestyle choices, lack of physical activity and poor diet.

Dr. Beilin LJ, in the update of on lifestyle and hypertension control, wrote, "lifestyle and blood pressure control will focus on complex dietary patterns, issues related to obesity, hypertension and dietary sodium, meta-analyses on exercise, alcohol, coffee consumption, and magnesium and some recent data on antioxidant vitamins".

Therefore, if you currently have high blood pressure, you can manage and treat the condition easily by the change of diet that recommends the high intake of fruits and vegetables and whole grain and reduces intake of saturated and trans fat and limits intake of red meats, and process foods, accompanied with limiting the use of alcohol, and salt intake.

Some researchers suggested that environmental factors such as long-term exposure to chronic stress are also the prevalent risk to the syndrome onset.

Dr. Tanya M. Spruill, at the Columbia University Medical Center, in the study of the connection between chronic psychological stress and hypertension, said, "Laboratory studies have provided convincing preliminary evidence that thinking about stressful events, in addition to experiencing them directly, can delay BP recovery, (leading to the persistent onset of hypertension)."

In the explanation of psychosocial factors that inflict the onset of hypertension. If your hypertension is a result of long-term psychological stress, biofeedback, progressive muscle relaxation, stress management training, and transcendental meditation, can be helpful.

Beet is best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belong to the amaranth family. It is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

Besides the major chemical constituents betalains and phenolics, it also contains a lesser amount of isobetanin, probetanin, neobetanin, indicaxanthin, vulgaxanthins, etc.

Dr. Coles LT, the lead scientist in the research team of the heart and diabetes program at the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute, Melbourne showed that consumption of beetroot juice on a low nitrate diet may lower blood pressure (BP)the major risk factor of cardiovascular events.

The results was based on a total of 50 women and 15 men participated in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

Particpants were randomized to receive 500 g of beetroot and apple juice (BJ) or a placebo juice (PL).

Volunteers also had BP measured at baseline and at least hourly for 24-h following juice consumption using an ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM).

Volunteers remained at the clinic for 1-h before resuming normal non-strenuous daily activities and The identical procedure was repeated 2-wk later with the drink (BJ or PL) not consumed on the first visit.

At the end of the final phase, researchers discovered that there was a trend (P=0.064) to lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) at 6-h after drinking BJ relative to PL.

Analysis in men only (n=13) after adjustment for baseline differences demonstrated a significant (P<0.05) reduction in SBP of 4 - 5 mmHg at 6-h after drinking BJ.

These results indicated, beetroot juice will lower BP when consumed as part of a normal diet in free-living healthy adults.

Additionally, in the examining of the impact of beetroot on lower blood pressure, researchers conducted an experiment to investigate the acute effects of beetroot bread (BB) on microvascular vasodilation, arterial stiffness, and BP in healthy participants.

The acute, randomized, open-label, controlled crossover trial. included 23 healthy men received 200 g bread containing 100 g beetroot (1.1 mmol nitrate) or 200 g control white bread (CB; 0 g beetroot, 0.01 mmol nitrate).

The incremental area under the curve (0-6 h after ingestion of bread) for endothelium-independent vasodilation was greater and lower for diastolic BP (DBP; P = 0.032) but not systolic (P = 0.99) BP after BB compared with CB.

The above effects occurred in conjunction with increases in plasma and urinary nitrate (P < 0.000 1) and nitrite.

BB acutely increased endothelium-independent vasodilation and decreased DBP,

These results suggested beetroot bread (BB) lower the blood pressure by widening the micro blood vessels and decreasing the levels of  DBP, without affecting the SBP.

Dr. Hobbs DA, the lead scientists said, after taking into of co and confounders " enriching bread with beetroot may be a suitable vehicle to increase intakes of cardioprotective beetroot in the diet and may provide new therapeutic perspectives in the management of hypertension".

taken altogether, beetroot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and therapeutic agent for the treatment of hypertension without inducing any side effects.

White Button Mushroom, the Potential Anti Breast Cancer Functional Foods, According to the Studies

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Mushroom may be the next generation of vegetable processing pharmaceutical value for the finding of single ingredients that process anti-breast cancer potency, some studies suggested.

Breast cancer is a primary medical and chronic condition that starts with the irregular cells growth due to DNA alternation on the surface the inner lining of the breast tissue.

At the advanced stage, breast cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ.

According to the statistic, the risk of a woman to develop breast cancer in her lifetime is 12.4%.

In 2018, approximately over 260,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with over 63,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown, Women who carry the mutated gene BRAC1 and 2 are associated with the increased risk of the disease.

In the concerns of breast cancer risk among women in both developed and less-developed countries and the increasing rates of breast cancer worldwide, particularly in postmenopausal and estrogen receptor-positive cases, researchers at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, launched an investigation to evaluate whether diet and lifestyle can prevent breast cancer.

At the final report, they discovered, "successful lifestyle changes could prevent 25% to 30% of cases of breast cancer" and "breast cancer) reductions will only be achieved if we can implement targeted prevention programs for high-risk women and women in population-based breast screening programs during childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood when the rapidly developing breast is particularly susceptible to carcinogenesis".

"Adherence to a healthy dietary pattern does not have specific effects on breast cancer risk but remains important as it reduces the risk for other common diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and dementia".

In menopausal women, researchers said, "Weight control throughout life appears to prevent cases (of breast cancer) after menopause".

These results clearly suggested that maintaining the healthy weight and active changing the unhealthy lifestyle and having mammograms taken every year in high-risk women are the best approaches to prevent the onset of breast cancer.

Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source,

The vegetable is a genus A. Muscaria and belonging to the family Amanitaceae and cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.

Chemical constituents of white button mushroom include astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).

In the assessment of white button mushroom (WBM), widely consumed in most countries intake in the protection of breast cancer, researchers launched an investigation to examine mushroom polysaccharides for their immunomodulating and antitumor properties.

Two polysaccharide fractions, ABP-1 and ABP-2, exerted a potential antitumor activity through inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as nitric oxide, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α. via modulation of macrophage, (the immune first line of defense) function by that is mediated in part through activation of nuclear factor-κB in the induction of tumor cell apoptosis.

In compared to other cancer cell lines, ABP-1 and ABP-2 demonstrated the ability to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells.
Particularly, when murine Sarcoma 180 cells exposed ABP-1 or ABP-2 were implanted subcutaneously into mice, two polysaccharide fractions reduce tumor growth substantially compared to those of control mice.

These result suggested that white button mushroom may exhibit the antitumor effect through stimulating the function of immune macrophages.

Additionally, PAP-3, an acidic polysaccharide fraction in the testing against breast cancer cell line MCF-7 cancer cells with an IC50 of 193 µg/mL, displays a strong apoptotic activity through inducing the loss of mitochondrial membrane and increase of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio via cytotoxicity.

PAP-3 also exhibited the pro-apoptotic function of p53, and cell cycle arrest at the S phase.

Antioxidants produced by the incubation of MCF-7 cells such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was significantly attenuated by the ROS generation and apoptosis by PAP-3.

Polysaccharides from the white button mushroom, especially acidic PAP-3, not only are very important nutritional ingredients, but also at least in part, exerts anti-cancer health benefits through the ROS-mediated mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

Interestingly, in the study to investigate the evidence of consumption of dietary mushrooms can protect against breast cancer, researchers found that MCF-7 cellular proliferation was significantly (P < 0.05) reduces up to 33% by all mushrooms and Hot water extracts (MT) from white button mushroom significantly increases apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

The results strongly indicated mushrooms processes significantly suppressed cellular proliferation property, with MT further significantly inducing apoptosis and cytotoxicity in human breast cancer cells.

Taken all together, white button mushroom may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer., depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies in human.

Phytochemical Piperine, A Potent Anti Allergy Bioactive Ingredient, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound in the prevention and treatment of allergy with no side effects, according to studies.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

Allergies are the result of the abnormally immune systematic response to typically harmless substances in the environment, leading to the symptoms and reaction in the nose, lungs, throat, sinuses, ears, lining of the stomach or on the skin.

Believe or not, the diseases associated with the hyperactivity of the immune system include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Over 20 million Americans 18 and older and more than 6.1 million children were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, in 2015. Another 20 million Americans were diagnosed with respiratory, food, or skin allergies.

In the comparison the allergic effect in the school today and the past, it often feels like food allergies are far more common today than in their youth, the incidence rarely happened in the past school days.

What contributes to the hyperactivity of the immune system in triggering the food allergy today compared to the past. No one knows.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors including children, adults younger than 18 years old, family history of allergy and having asthma, particularly in people with a genetic preposition are associated to the onset of allergy.

Dr. Romina A. Ortiz, the lead scientist in the immunity team at the The Johns Hopkins Asthma & Allergy Center, said, " Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has been widely employed in the field of allergic disease, and to date significant associations have been published for nearly 100 asthma genes/loci, in addition to multiple genes/loci for AD, AR and IgE levels".

And, " Molecular genetics has undergone a technological revolution, leading to next-generation sequencing (NGS) strategies that are increasingly employed to hone in on the causal variants associated with allergic diseases".

These result clearly indicated that people inherited the mutated gene from the parent that causes over-reactivity of the immune system are at the increased risk of allergy

On finding a natural constituent or wholefood for the prevention and treatment of allergy with no side effect, researchers at the Kinki University investigated the anti-allergy effect of the extract of the Piper nigrum leaf.

The extracts at a different dose of 50, 200 and 500 mg/kg exerted a significant activity in inhibiting the cutaneous reaction at the early phase and later phase in dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) induced allergic mice.

Allergic effect of ear swelling also was inhibited by the PN-ext (50, 200 and 500 mg/kg, per os (p.o.)). But this effect on very late phase response (vLPR) in the model mice was significant but weaker than that on IPR.

At day 7, administration of PN-ext (50, 200 and 500 mg/kg for 7 d) completely inhibited picryl chloride (PC)-induced ear swelling in PC sensitized mice.

The results were attributed to the extract inhibitory effect on compound 48/80-induced histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells.

The in-depth analysis of the result suggested that 2 Two lignans of PN-ext, (-)-cubebin (1) and (-)-3,4-dimethoxy-3,4-desmethylenedioxycubebin (2), from the piperine found in the extract, were identified as major active principles having histamine release-inhibitory activity.

Additional evaluation of the piperine antiallergic effect, researchers launched a study of Balb/c mice to test the effect of piperine on airway hyperresponsiveness, pulmonary eosinophilic infiltration, various immune cell phenotypes.

The Balb/c mice were induced asthma by ovalbumin sensitization and inhalation. Piperine (4.5 and 2.25 mg/kg) was orally administered 5 times a week for 8 weeks.

Piperine-treated groups showed a strongly suppressed eosinophil infiltration, allergic airway inflammation, and airway hyperresponsiveness by inhibiting the proinflammatory cytokines and levels of immunoglobulin E and histamine.

In other words, the therapeutic mechanism by which piperine effectively treats asthma is based on a reduction of Th2 cytokines associated with the promotion of IgE and eosinophilic responses.

Taken altogether, piperine, a major bioactive compound found in black pepper may be used for the prevention and treatment of allergy caused by immune overreaction.
