Dried Pea, The Legume Which May Process Anti Colon Cancer Potency

By Kyle J. Norton

Dried peas with high of fiber may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

Colon cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by cells growth uncontrollably and disorderly that start on the surface of the inner lining of colon tissue.

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organ through the circulation of blood and fluids.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, researchers do know that unhealthy diet and lifestyle with physical inactivity are associated with a substantially increased risk of colon cancer.

Epidemiological studies agreed that the Western diet is associated with the increased risk and recurrent risk of colon cancer.

Ms. Marilisa Racco at the National Online Journalist, Smart Living Global News wrote "There’s more bad news for lovers of red meat and refined grains — also known as a Western diet — from cancer researchers. A new study has found that a pro-inflammatory diet that’s heavy in processed red and organ meat, refined grains, and sugary drinks, will significantly increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer in both men and women".

Furthermore, a higher intake of a Western dietary pattern after cancer diagnosis was also associated with recurrence and death in colon cancer patients.

Publish on the Public Medical Literature, the study includes a total of 1009 patients with stage III colon cancer.

Researchers said, "During a median follow-up of 5.3 years for the overall cohort, 324 patients had a cancer recurrence, 223 patients died with cancer recurrence, and 28 died without documented cancer recurrence".

These result suggested that genetic preposition and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle the major risk factors that associate to the onset of colon cancer and recurrent colon cancer.

Dried peas are the small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, the genus Pisum belonging to the family Fabaceae.

The bean has a healthy source of protein, fibers, vitamins, and minerals that are good for everyone diet.

Besides it main component of the polyphenolic compound, dried bean also contains saponin pisatin, L-pipecolic acid, glycoside-Pisatoside, tocopherols, cerebroside, etc.

In the study to reaffirm the polyphenolics and saponins effect in the stimulation of antioxidant enzymes in the host and anticarcinogenic activity, researchers launched an investigation to examine the naturally occurring plant protease inhibitors which have potential health-promoting properties within the mammalian gastrointestinal tract against the risk of colon cancer.

Bowman-Birk inhibitors (BBI) isolated from peas exerts anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties in the large intestine by surviving from both acidic conditions and the action of proteolytic enzymes in the stomach and small intestine,

A recombinant form of TI1B (rTI1B), representing a major BBI isoinhibitor from pea also inhibited the growth of human colorectal HT29 cells in vitro.

The proliferation of HT29 colon cancer cells was significantly affected by the injection of rTI1B in a dose-dependent manner (IC50 = 31 (sd 7) μm), compared to the novel engineered mutant.

Interestingly, application of  rTI1B induced HT29 colon cancer cells apoptosis without affecting the nearby healthy cells.

Furthermore, the rTI1B proved to be active against trypsin and chymotrypsin in facilitating the colorectal carcinogenesis and promotes proliferation, invasion, and metastasis.

Proteases inhibitor isolated from the peas may process a potential chemopreventive effect during the early stages of colorectal carcinogenesis.

Adding 1 or 2 portions of dried peas into a daily diet in high colon cancer risk patients may reduce the incidence of colon cancer.

Taken all together, dried peas may be considered a function legume in the prevention and an adjunct therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the dried peas or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of its anti-colon cancer possibilities.

Avocado, the Fruit Which Kills Breast Cancer Cells in Vivo and Vitro, Scientists Say

By Kyle J, Norton

Avocado may be considered a potentially functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

Breast cancer is the medical condition that starts on the surface of the inner lining of breast tissue in the early stage. On this stage, a small lump may be found when touched.

The 5 years survival rate at this stage is 100%.

However, at the later stage, malignant cancers cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The lifetime risk for a woman to develop breast cancer is 1/8 in the US.

The epidemiological studies suggested that women who carry the mutated gene BRAC1 and 2 are associated with substantially increased risk of the disease onset.

Men who carry the mutated gene BRCA2 have a 7% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.

Sadly, women who carry the abnormal BRCA1 orBRCA2 gene have about a 60% risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes, compared to only 12.5%  for other women.

In a comment of the study published on June 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dr. García-Closas, M.D., Dr.P.H., deputy director of NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, who was not involved in the research. said, “This study has confirmed estimates of the risk of developing cancer for women who are mutation carriers—that confirmation is reassuring for both women and the healthcare team who make important care decisions.”

Therefore, suggestions to these women may include intensive early surveillance, use of chemoprevention, and prophylactic surgery may be necessary for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Avocados are a commercially valuable fruit and are cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world, it is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

Chemical constituents of avocado include
The fruit contains campesterol, high amounts of β-sitosterol (average 76.4 mg/100 g); fatty acids (approximately 60% monounsaturated, 20% saturated, and 20% unsaturated); high amounts of glutathione (27.7 mg/100 g); approximately 2% protein; 6–9% carbohydrates and sugars (glucose, fructose, d-mannoheptulose, a taloheptulose, and an alloheptulose); two bitter substances (1-acetoxy-2,4-dihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene and 1,2,4-trihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene); carnitine; proanthocyanidins; persenones A and B.

Persin, the toxic chemical compound found in the fruits and leaves of avocado inhibited human breast cancer cell line, in the testing of synthetic analogs of the avocado-produced toxin persin by activated the program cells death pathway.

When using combined with tamoxifen, the small amounts of tamoxifen needed to perform similar chemo effects, thus reducing the toxicity to the healthy cells that normally killed by the presence of tamoxifen.

Futhermore, in the study to examine the anticancer properties of Persea declinata (Bl.) Kosterm bark methanolic crude extract (PDM), researchers at the University of Malaya launched an investigation to test the PDM in the exhibition of antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells.

Application of the PDM exhibited a potent antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, with an IC50 value of 16.68 µg/mL after 48 h of treatment.

Injection of PDM caused cell cycle arrest and subsequent apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, as seen by increase population at the G0/G1 phase and, higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and DNA fragmentation, the indications of cancer cells apoptosis.

Additional analysis suggested that PDM elevated the expression of ROS in the induction of cancer cell death through cytotoxicity observed by the perturbation of mitochondrial membrane potential, cell permeability, and activation of caspases-3/7, in the execution phase of apoptosis.

The results of cancer cells apoptosis can be observed through the increased the expression of the proapoptotic molecule, Bax, but decreased the expression of prosurvival proteins, Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, in a dose-dependent manner after PDM administration.

The finding strongly suggested that PDM isolated from avocado could inhibit proliferation in MCF-7 cells via cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction.

Taken altogether, avocado may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of the avocado anti-breast cancer possibilities.

Black beans, The Legume in the Prevention and Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Enlarged Prostate)

By Kyle J. Norton

Black bean, a glossy black shell legume may have a potential effect in protecting the prostate gland against the onset of prostatic hyperplasia, scientists found.

Prostatic hyperplasia is a medical condition associated with the enlarged prostate that impedes the urinary flow.

The prostate is a gland that surrounds part of your urethra, the tube with a function to carry urine and semen out of men penis.

The condition is found mostly in aging men, as a result of free testosterone converting to hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Overabundant DHT in the men body is a major cause of an enlarged prostate.

Truly, DHT has been found to plays a beneficial role in the developing prostate but it can be detrimental in the adult prostate in facilitating pathologic prostate growth, including the enlarged prostate.

The role of DHT in other adult tissues is uncertain. DHT has not been shown to perform beneficial functions unique from testosterone in the adult male, and it is believed that its fundamental effect may amplify testosterone's weaker hormonal signal.

The 5alpha-reductase inhibitors play an important role in the protection of the prostate gland by blocking the process of prostate diseases, by reducing the prostate volume, and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and enlarged prostate.

5alpha-reductase inhibitors have been found in the low levels in aging male with prostate diseases.

Some researchers suggested that by targeting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the enlarged prostate can be preventable.

Men who follow an unhealthy diet and lifestyle of the Western diet with a lot of saturated and trans fat, red meat, process and less in fruits and vegetable and whole grain are associated with a substantial risk of the early onset of LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms) in describing the symptoms related to problems of the lower urinary tract (bladder, prostate, and urethra), including enlarged prostate.

Dr. Pao-Hwa Lin, the lead author in the study "Lifestyle and LUTS: what is the correlation in men?" reconfirm these statements said, "1) Epidemiological data repeatedly show a favorable relationship between healthy eating habits and regular physical activity level and a lower risk for LUTS or progression of LUTS, 2) certain specific nutrients or dietary factors may contribute to the link between diet and LUTS due to their anti-inflammatory potential, and 3) very little research has been conducted to test the epidemiological findings in randomized controlled trials".

"A healthy lifestyle with good quality diet and regular physical activity is beneficial not only for potentially improving or reducing LUTS but also for cardiovascular and overall health".

In other words, an enlarged prostate can be preventable in aging male, if they follow a healthy diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise.

Black bean is a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belonging to the family Fabaceae.

The legume can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

Chemical constituents of black bean include
The major chemical compounds of black bean include anthocyanin, (-)-epicatechin, delphinidin, petunidin, flavonols, and malvidin.

In the examination to reconfirm the effect of black soybeans on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the anti benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) anthocyanin extracted from the legume on rat induced enlarged prostate.

The study included a total of male rats whose were divided into five experimental groups: a control group, a BPH-induced group, and three BPH-induced groups that received oral doses of anthocyanin (40, 80, and 160 mg/kg).

Prostate hyperplasia was induced by the administration of testosterone propionate for 4 weeks.

Anthocyanin-treated groups received the compound for 4 weeks after the induction of enlarged prostate.

The mean prostate weights for the rats receiving 40, 80, and 160 mg/kg anthocyanin were 323.00, 324.00, and 617.50 mg, respectively.

This assessment indicated the preferred dose of anthocyanin in the prevention of enlarged prostate is 40 mg.

In groups comparison, the average prostate weight in the BPH-induced group was significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.05), whereas the prostate weights in the anthocyanin-administered groups were significantly lower than in the BPH-induced group (p < 0.05).

Furthermore, anthocyanin administration helped to prevent the change of prostate weight caused by injecting testosterone to induce prostatic hyperplasia.

Moreover, apoptotic body counts were significantly higher in groups receiving anthocyanin than in the BPH-induced group.

These results suggested that anthocyanin may be effective in decreasing the volume and suppressing the proliferation of the prostate, through inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Additionally, in the testing to examine whether Seoritae extract (SE) form the black soybeans have beneficial effects on the reduction of prostate weight in a rat model of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), researchers at the joint study led by the The Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine conducted an experiment with BPH induced by intramuscular injections of testosterone enanthate once a week for 5 weeks in Sprague-Dawley rats, then rats were treated with or without daily oral doses of SE during BPH induction.

After 5 weeks, the SE treatment group showed a significant decrease in prostate weight, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and 5alpha-reductase activity compared to the nontreated BPH group.

These results coincidently showed that SE is effective in decreasing the weight and proliferation of the prostate similar to those of the above study

Dr. Hoon Jang, the lead scientists suggest that SE may be an effective treatment for BPH.

Taken all together, black beans containing the abundant major bioactive compound anthocyanin may
be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of the early phase of enlarged prostate with no side effects, depending on the further the human studies.

Banana Enhances the Immune Function Against Infectious Diseases, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food which processes a potential effect to improve the function of the immune system against infectious micro-pathogens, some studies suggested.

The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other invaders, by activating the systematic immune response.

In the acute phase of infection, macrophages, the first line of immune defenses stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to protect the injured or damaged tissue against foreign invasion.

However, overproduction of the proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage to the healthy cells and improper healing with the formation of scars.

Immune system disorders are a chronic condition caused by the abnormal under-activity or over-activity of the immune system.

In an overactive immune system or autoimmune disorders, the immune white blood cells mistakenly attack and damage the bodily tissue.

The underactive immune disorders are also known as the immune deficiency diseases, weakening the immune ability to fight invaders, and increasing the risk of infections.

Dr. Wypych TP, the lead author in the study "The Impact of Diet on Immunity and Respiratory Diseases" wrote, "the "diet hypotheses," pointing to the importance of changes in our dietary habits" and "the interplay between the Western diet, microbiota, and inflammatory conditions".

In other words, the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, a lot of red meats, processed foods and less in fruits and vegetable may play an important role in either weakening the immune system or causing overactive immune system in the facilitation of the onset of autoimmune diseases.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belonging to the family of the lily and the orchid.

In the examining the effect of the hot-extracts isolated from fruit's peel of banana on human health researchers at the joint study led by the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology launched an evaluation to observe the antibacterial activity from aquatic animals, and immunostimulating potential, disease resistance and anti-hypothermal stress in giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii.

The injection od banana hot extracts demonstrated a strong activity against 1 Gram-positive and 3 Gram-negative pathogens, including Lactococcus garvieae, Photobacteria damsella.

Prawn received BPE via injection at 1-6 μg (g prawn)(-1) significantly enhanced the immunity through the increased total hemocyte count (THC), hyaline cell (HC), granular cell (GC), phenoloxidase (PO) activity and phagocytic activity against L. garvieae from 3 to 6 days.

The extracts also significantly increased clearance efficiency against L. garvieae and a significantly decreased coagulation time of prawn from 1 to 6 days and levels of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

The survival rates of Macrobrachium rosenbergii injected with BPE at concentrations of 1, 3 and 6 μg (g prawn)(-1) were significantly higher than those injected with saline control after challenge with L. garvieae for 4-6 days, and the respective relative survival percentages of prawn were 28.6%, 38.1%, and 47.8%, respectively at 6 days, an indication of the improved immune system against the attack of pathogens.

These results suggested that BPE may be a pharmaceutical candidate to be used as the bacteriostat, and immunostimulant and physiological regulator through enhancing the immunity, physiological responses, and resistance against infectious stimuli.

Additionally, in the evaluate the antagonistic mechanisms of Lactobacillus plantarum CIF17AN2 (an infant isolate), saba starch (banana), and their synbiotic combination against Salmonella Typhimurium SA2093, researchers found that
* The L. plantarum CIF17AN2 exhibited anti-Salmonella mechanisms through secretion of antimicrobial compounds, adhesion ability and competitive adhesion to mucin on HT-29 cell line.

* The effects of Lactobacillus plantarum CIF17AN2 on the Salmonella inhibition was significantly reduced in the presence of human fecal microflora.

* The combination of saba starch with L. plantarum CIF17AN2 showed the greatest inhibition against Sal. Typhimurium SA2093 in the colon model.

* The enhancement of anti-Salmonella activity due to the addition of saba starch corresponded a significant decrease in pH and an increase of lactic acid and short chain fatty acids.

These results suggested that banana starch can be used alone or combined with other ingredients for the treatment of Salmonella T. infection.

Taken altogether, banana may be considered a function in enhancing the immune function against microorganisms, which cause infectious diseases, depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies in human.

Strawberry, the Functional Food Which Processes anti Neurological Diseases Potential, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Strawberries may process strong neuroprotective effects by protecting the brain cell integrity and viability against the onset of neurological diseases, some scientists suggested.

A neuroprotective effect is an event that protects the central nervous system (CNS) by relatively preserving of neuronal structure and/or function.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorder. Anything that involves the structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves, including brain damage are considered as neuro diseases.

Most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunction, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, overuse of alcohol, lack of physical activity and inadequate relief of chronic stress and poor diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods and less in fruits and vegetable and whole grain are some of the key contributors in the development and progression of chronic diseases, including neurological diseases.

Dr. Null G, the lead author in the study "Nutrition and Lifestyle Intervention on Mood and Neurological Disorders" said, "a vegan diet, fruit and vegetable juices, nutritional supplements, regular exercise, and de-stressing techniques, would affect 27 subjects with anxiety, depression, poor memory, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, history of stroke, or multiple sclerosis. Several subjects had overlapping conditions" and " an intervention of diet, juicing, supplements, exercise, and lifestyle may provide considerable benefits for all conditions addressed.".

These results suggested that if you are following a healthy diet and lifestyle, your risk of neurological diseases is substantially lower compared to people who follow the Werten diet with physical inactivity.

Strawberries are a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae.

The fruits have been grown all over the world in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

In the assessment of the neuroprotective effects of a unique class of nutraceutical antioxidants, anthocyanins, against the MOS-induced death of cultured cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs), researchers at the University of Denver conducted a study to evaluate the effect of callistephin and kuromanin, the anthocyanins derived from strawberries.

The tested anthocyanins derivatives demonstrated significant protection from MOS-induced apoptosis, equivalent to those of the green tea polyphenol, epigallocatechin 3-gallate.

Callistephin and kuromanin also exerted a neuroprotective activity by preventing inhibition of Bcl-2, a cellular proliferative protein that causes a significant reduction of mitochondrial GSH, cell antioxidant enzyme.

Furthermore, the anthocyanins derivative inhibited iron-induced lipid peroxidation in rat brain homogenates and prevented cardiolipin oxidation in the induction of neurological damage.

Moreover, the anthocyanin derivative significantly enhanced GSH, an antioxidant enzyme produced by the host body observed by the peroxidase activity in a cell-free assay.

Additionally, in the reassessment the mechanisms involved in the repair or elimination of damaged neurons, Dr. Winter AN, the team leader scientist at joint study led by the University of Denver, launched an evaluate to compare the ability of same derivatives of anthocyanins, callistephin (pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside) and kuromanin (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside) in the protection of cerebellar granule neurons from damage induced by either oxidative or nitrosative stress.

Both callistephin (pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside) and kuromanin protected neurons from oxidative stress induced by glutamate excitotoxicity, observed under conditions of nitrosative stress.

Numerous neurotrophic factors seem to mediate neuronal repair and viability, but because the neurotrophic factors are proteins or polypeptides, they cannot be given orally and do not enter the brain if given intravenously.

However, only kuromanin displayed the capacity to defend neurons from nitric oxide (NO)-induced apoptosis.

The team at the final report, said, "(There must be) a unique mechanism by which slight structural variances, specifically the absence or presence of a catechol moiety, lend kuromanin the unique ability to generate superoxide, which acts as a scavenger of NO".

These results suggested that anthocyanins may be used for treating neurodegenerative diseases, even kuromanin and compounds that share similar chemical characteristics may be more effective than the therapeutic agents forthan callistephin and related (non-catechol) compounds.

In the summary Dr. Shukitt-Hale B, the lead scientist at the USDA-ARS Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University there is no coincidence that the berry fruit supplementation, polyphenolic compounds found in berry fruits, such as blueberries and strawberries, exerted their beneficial effects either through their ability to lower oxidative stress and inflammation or directly by altering the signaling involved in neuronal communication, calcium buffering ability, neuroprotective stress shock proteins.

Taken all together, intake of strawberry daily and regularly may have a profound effect in the protection the brain neurons against the onset of neurological diseases.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenol Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in the Alleviated Symptoms, Reduced Risk and Treatment of Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing risk, progression, and treatment of arthritis, some scientists suggested.

Arthritis is a chronic condition characterized by painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.

According to statistic, arthritis is the common autoimmune disorder affected over 50 million worldwide.

The exact causes of arthritis are unknown, Some researchers suggested that longterm use in stimulating the wear and tear is a major cause of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most common forms of arthritis.

An infection or injury to the joints that were not treated properly can also exacerbate the natural breakdown of cartilage tissue, leading to arthritis in the later life.

Certain risk factors proved by clinical trials and human studies such as overweight and obesity, occupations that require the use of hand or leg in the repetitive movement, including knee bending and squatting are associated with the early onset of arthritis.

Smoking, family history, gender and gene mutation inherited from the parents, such as human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes, are also considered some prevalent risk factors of the disease.

Depending on the type of arthritis that affects the patients. Patients with arthritis may be experiencing symptoms of pain stiffness swelling and reduced the range of motion. If you have some of the above symptoms, you may already be infected by arthritis.

Moreover, if you are taking medicine to alleviate symptoms of arthritis, please make sure that you discuss the side effects with your doctor.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, long-term untreated rheumatoid arthritis can complicate the risk of heart disease.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the College of Pharmacy, green tea epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in preclinical studies displayed a significant effect in the treatment of arthritic disease.

In vitro, application of green tea extract EGCG demonstrated activities in cartilage-preserving and chondroprotective action through reducing expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNFα, and IL-6 and modulated extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover-induced changes of the biomechanical environment of chondrocytes and accelerate the degradation of cartilage as well as driving the progression of the disease in the presence of inflammation.

Normal extracellular matrix (ECM) is a composed collagen type II with a function to provide tensile support for the tissue.

Further analysis in the expression of proinflammatory factors researchers found that the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 and IL-6 associated correlatively in knee joints in arthritis were inhibited by green tea EGCG.

Some researchers also suggested that interleukin 1 (IL-1) is a crucial mediator of the inflammatory response, playing an important part in the body's natural responses and the development of pathological conditions that lead to chronic inflammation.

In the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin), application of green tea inhibited the levels of TNFα , the proinflammatory cytokine with a function in inducing synovial fibroblast cytotoxicity.

Interestingly, in the study to evaluate the possible effects of the administration of green tea extract on the oxidative state of the liver and brain of adjuvant-induced arthritic rats, researchers indicated that green tea daily doses of 250 mg kg(-1) (59.8 mg catechins per kg) for 23 days displays a strong effect in decreased symptoms of arthritis by ameliorated diminutions in protein and lipid damage in liver, brain and plasma, through antioxidant effect in reduced levels of ROS in the stimulation of  free radical chain reaction to initiate production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in precipitating chronic diseases.

Rats treated with green tea EGCG also showed a significant improvement in restoring the natural antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and protein thiol levels produced by the body.

Moreover, green tea injection also normalized the activity of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which is increased in the liver of arthritic patients and considered a risk factor for the development of arthritis.

Increased activity glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in oxidative metabolism that inflicts damage on all classes of macromolecules.

Additional differentiation of green tea EGCG immunomodulatory effects and mechanisms on experimental arthritis induced by collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice, compared to control received phosphate buffered saline (PBS), researchers found that application of green tea EGCG at dose of 10 mg/kg demonstrated a strong effect in ameliorating clinical symptoms and reducing histological scores in arthritic mice, through modulating the immune activity by stimulating the production of the Nrf-2 antioxidant pathway, a major mechanism in the cellular defense against oxidative or electrophilic stress through detoxication and elimination.

EGCG also ameliorated experimental arthritis in mice by eliciting indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine interferon-gamma, astrocytes, and microglia in the activation of the immune system to attack the dendritic cell located on the surface on the joint tissue.

Application of the EGCG also increased frequencies of T regs with a dominant role in the suppression of autoimmune pathology.

Some researchers suggested that increased Treg number and/or function in model systems may have a significant effect in both the prevented and reversed arthritis disease.

Taken together, green tea with abundant bioactive polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered a functional food and supplement in alleviating the symptoms, reducing risk, and treatment of arthritis.

Green Tea, The Beverage Which Protects the Brain Functioning Against the Onset of Mood Disorder

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a potential and positive effect in treating mood disorder, some scientists suggested.

Mood disorder is a psychological condition characterized by an elevated mood, including mania or hypomania. In other words, the syndrome is a group of mental illnesses that can affect how a person feel and think of him/herself and people in the public life.

Mood disorder can be classified into depression, dysthymic disorder,... and bipolar disorder depending on the symptoms of expression.

The condition not only affects the personal life of the patient but also cause psychological and financial burdens to the immediate family members as the condition can only get worse over time.

According to the statistic in 2017, over 2.6 millions Canadian age 12 and over were diagnosed with mood disorders, affecting over 8% of general population. Sadly, about one in seven Canadian will experience a mood disorder at some point in their life.

The exact causes of mood disorders are unknown, however, there are some underlying factors that can elevate the risk of the condition, including family history, previous mood disorder, depression, certain medical conditions and long-term use of some medication.

Symptoms of mood disorders are totally depending to types of the syndrome. If you are experiencing symptoms of feelings of hopelessness, long-term trouble sleeping or daytime sleepiness, poor concentration and trouble concentrating or making decisions accompanied by physical symptoms of fatigue or low energy, you may have mood disorders. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the concerns of the widespread of mental disorders, researchers at the Elsevier GmbH.lauched an investigation to examine the effects of green tea or green tea extracts, l-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate both components of green tea-on general neuropsychology, on the sub-category cognition and on brain functions in humans.

By searching the database of medical literature in PubMed for qualified studies that are satisfied the guidelines and criteria set by the PRISMA statement.

Out of 21 selected studies, 4 were randomized controlled trials, 12 were cross-over studies (both assessed with an adapted version of the DELPHI-list), 4 were cross-sectional studies and one was a cohort study (both assessed with an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa assessment scale).

After assessing the results of all studies, researchers found that injection of green tea exerts a significant effect in psychopathological symptoms (e.g. reduction of anxiety), cognition (e.g. benefits in memory and attention) and brain function (e.g. activation of working memory seen in functional MRI).

Further analysis also suggested that the effects of green tea may be attributed to the combined influence of both caffeine and l-theanine, as separate administration of either substance is found to have a lesser impact.

Moreover, in the systematic review and meta-analysis conducted on 11 randomized placebo-controlled human studies of acute effects of tea constituents L-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate, administered alone or in combination with caffeine, on cognitive function and mood, researchers discovered that
* Combined caffeine and L-theanine demonstrated some moderate effects in the first 2 hours postdose, on ladder alertness, attentional switching accuracy, and, to a lesser extent, some unisensory and multisensory attentional outcomes.

* Caffeine and L-theanine doses revealed trends toward greater change in effect size for caffeine dose than for L-theanine dose, particularly during the first hour postdose.

Additionally, in the study to evaluate whether tea has any effect on mood and performance benefits, such as relaxation and concentration, researchers at the From Unilever Research and Development also conducted an extensive search of studies with consistent evidence for improved attention.

At the final report, researchers concluded after taking into account co and confounders
* Tea consumption also consistently improved self-reported alertness and arousal, whereas effects on pleasure or relaxation were less consistent.

* Intake of tea regularly has a strong impact on psychological function such as work performance and creativity.

The findings suggested that moderate green tea consumption regularly and daily has significant acute benefits in both mood and performance in real-life situations.
