@Herbal Andrographis, The Herbal Remedy Which Suppresses Rheumatoid Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis paniculata may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, some researchers found.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissue, leading to the symptoms of swollen, and painful joints. The pain and stiffness in patients with RA often worsen following rest.

In most cases, bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments associated with the joint also were found to have certain damage in patients with RA. These may be a result of synovium covering the joints  releasing chemicals during the attack by the immune system that causes the damage to nearby tissue

As of today, researchers do not know What causes the immune system to attack the joint. However, they do know that certain risk factors such as gene mutation, hormone change, smoking are associated with the early onset of the disease.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40 and diminishes the quality of life of many elderly

Dr. Júlia Kurkó, the lead author in the study of  "Genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis — A Comprehensive Review" wrote, "the heritability of RA has been estimated to be about 60 %, while the contribution of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) to heritability has been estimated to be 11–37 %".

In hormone perspective, Oxford Academic wrote "RA is the most common chronic systemic autoimmune disease, with a higher prevalence in women, suggesting female hormonal factors play a role in the development of the disease" and "understanding their impact on RA development is clinically relevant and may result in specific preventive interventions in high-risk populations".

If you are experiencing symptoms of pe have persistent joint pain, tenderness, swelling, redness, stiffness, and loss of joint range of motion, you may have RA. Please make sure you visit your doctor to rule out the RA possibility.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients includediterpene lactones, such as: neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

In the study to reaffirm the Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall ex Nees (Acanthaceae) anti-inflammatory effects, attributed to the main constituent andrographolide which is proposed as an alternative in the treatment of autoimmune disease, researchers at the Universidad Austral de Chile conducted an investigation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) effects on the tablets (Paractin) made of an extract of A. paniculata (30% total andrographolides).

Tablets (Paractin) made by an extract of A. paniculata (30% total andrographolides) were administered three times a day for 14 weeks, after a 2-week washout period to 60 patients with active RA.

The intensity of joint pain decreased in the active vs placebo group at the end of treatment.

According to the returned questionnaire from the patients, application of the tablets demonstrated a significant diminishing for week in tender joint,, number of swollen joints, total grade of swollen joint -0.27 95%CI (-0.48 to -0.07; p = 0.010), number of tender joints, total grade of swollen joints, total grade of tender joints and HAQ associated with a reduction of rheumatoid factor, IgA, and C4

Dr, Burgos RA, the lead author at the end of the study said, "A. paniculata could be a useful "natural complement" in the treatment of AR".

In the perspective of the pseudo-tumoral expansion of fibroblast-like synoviocytes, a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), researchers found that andrographolide treatment of rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RAFLSs) isolated from RA patients decreased the proliferation of RAFLSs in a dose-dependent manner.

Andrographolide also showed a G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in RAFLSs, according to the cell cycle analysis using propidium iodide (PI) staining.

Injection Andrographolide also demonstrated the increase of the expression of cell-cycle inhibitors p21, a regulator of cell cycle progression at G1 and S phase. and p27 in the G1 phase of the cell cycle and a concomitant reduction of cyclin-dependent kinase 4, a cell division protein in a dose-dependent.

Moreover, andrographolide-treated RAFLSs displayed a significant decrease in the Bcl-2/Bax ratio compared to untreated cells.

Dr, Yan J said, at the final report, "andrographolide exerts anti-growth and pro-apoptotic effects on RAFLSs, thus may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of RA".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis processed high amounts of bioactive compound Andrographolide may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of RA.

Herbal Chamomile, the Potential Anti Anxiety Remedy, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Chamomile may be considered an adjunct therapy or combined with conventional medicine for treatment of anxiety, some scientists suggested.

Anxiety is a psychological disorder characterized by a constant worry about future events and fear of current events.

A prolonged period of stress from work, school, the personal relationship such as marriage and from an emotional trauma such as the death of a loved one or from a serious medical illness can elevate the onset of the syndrome.

Other causes of anxiety may include long-term use of certain medication and illicit drug, such as cocaine.

Some researchers also suggested the risk of anxiety are associated with genetic mutation inherited from the parent and traumatic events that alter brain structure and function.

Some people may experience some levels of anxiety in low oxygen levels in high-altitude areas.

Altogether, one may say, anxiety disorder is a result of a combination of biological, psychological, and other individual factors.

If you have some of the symptoms of feeling nervous, restless or tense,  a sense of impending danger, panic or doom,  an increased heart rate, breathing rapidly, and persistent sweating and trembling. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of anxiety disorder.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, a common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Chemical ingredients include
Guaianolides matricarin and achillin, acetoxyachillin and leucodin (= desacetoxymatricarin), corresponding C-11 stereoisomers(a),(Z)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (cis-GMCA), chlorogenic acid, (E)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (trans-GMCA), quercetagetin-7-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, chamaemeloside, apigenin 7-O-(6″-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside), apigenin] and one polyacetylene (tonghaosu)(b).

In the finding, a natural ingredient for the treatment of anxiety with no side effects, researchers at the launched a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and tolerability trial to examine Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract activity in patients with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

In a total of 61 outpatients with mild to moderate GAD were enrolled, and 57 were randomized to either double-blind chamomile extract (n = 28) or placebo therapy (n = 29) for 8 weeks.

Application of Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in the mean total Hamilton Anxiety Rating (HAM-A) score compared to placebo.

There are no intolerated adverse effects found in both groups.

Dr. Amsterdam JD, the lead author at the final report, wrote. "chamomile may have modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD".

Additionally, in the study to determine whether commercially available botanicals directly affect the primary brain enzymes responsible for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism, researchers launched an analysis of the anxiolytic effects of chamomile aqueous and ethanolic plant extracts.

The chamomile aqueous extract showed a significant inhibition of GAD activity (0.11-0.65 mg/mL) without affecting the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism.

These findings suggested chamomile aqueous extract exerts the anxiolytic activity through interaction with the glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) in the influence of neurotransmission.

Furthermore, in the study of the sedative effects of Apigenin, the bioactive compound isolated from Chamomile in mice, researchers found that
* Apigenin competitively inhibited the binding of flunitrazepam, a powerful hypnotic drug that is a benzodiazepine derivative with a Ki of 4 microM in exerting the sedative activity.

* Apigenin had a clear anxiolytic activity in mice are the elevated plus-maze which are used to test the anxiety in the laboratory.

Increased application of Apigenin by a 10-fold compared to normal concentrations display a mild sedative effect as seen on a 26% reduction in ambulatory locomotor activity and a 35% decrement in hole-board parameters.

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a secondary therapy or combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of anxiety, pending to larger and multi-centers human studies.

Herbal Calendula, the Potent Anti Edema Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Calendula may have a potential effect in reducing risk and treatment of edema, some scientists suggested.

Edema is a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain tissues within the body due to injury or inflammation.

In most cases, edema occurs under the surfaces of the skin in the leg and ankle. However, fluids can also be accumulated in the lungs (pulmonary edema).

Without the assistance of diagnosis, researchers can not pinpoint the exact causes of edema.

There are numbers of risk factor associated with the onset of the swellings, such as low levels of albumin that keeps the blood in the vessels, allergic reaction, blood clots. Some medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney diseases and long-term intake medicine such as NSAIDs and calcium channel blockers also increased the risk of edema.

Some researchers suggested that under normal conditions, medicine that removes excess fluid and reduces intake salt can be effective. However, if the condition of edema is caused by underlying disease, separated medicine treatment may be required.

If you are experiencing symptoms of heavy leg and ankle and shortness of breath, please check with your doctor to rule out the edema possibility.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Chemical ingredients
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

In the study to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of Calendula officinalis flower extract against paw edema, researchers at the Amala Cancer Research Centre, launched an investigation in the paw edema of animals induced by carrageenan and dextran.

Oral injection of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Calendula extract exerted a significant inhibition (50.6 and 65.9% respectively) in paw edema of animals by 41.9% in the carrageenan group and 42.4% in the dextran group, respectively through the anti-inflammatory activity.

In chronic inflammatory model induced by injection of formalin, administration of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Calendula extract produced an inhibition of 32.9 and 62.3% respectively compared to controls.

Further examination also found that proinflammatory cytokines activated by macrophage of the immune system in the response to infection are also reduced significantly.

Other proinflammatory proteins such as IL- 1beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma and acute phase protein, C- reactive protein (CRP) in edema mice produced by LPS injection were inhibited significantly by the extracts in different doses.

These results suggested that herbal Calendula inhibits edema caused by inflammation through its anti-inflammatory expression.

Additionally, in the study to reaffirm the efficacy of Calendula anti-inflammation against the progression of edema, researchers at the niversità di Trento conducted a differentiation on the anti-inflammatory chemical constituents of the herb.

13 out of 15 terpenoids from Calendula were found to process topical anti-inflammatory activities with respect to the inhibition of croton oil-induced ear edema in the mouse.

Three derivatives of Rings A, D, and E of faradiol, the C(16) benzyl ether 15, the C(30) aldehyde 24, and the C(30) primary alcohol 25 isolated from the herb also showed a significantly improved anti-inflammatory potency.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula with the abundant anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory edema.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Herbal Remedy Which Kills Bladder Cancer Cells in Vitro, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, some scientists suggested.

Bladder cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the tissue of the bladder.

Most bladder cancer starts first on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the bladder. As the cancer progress to the advanced stage, the malignant cells can infect other healthy tissue through the circulation of blood and fluid.

Bladder cancer that spreads to other parts of the body is known as metastatic bladder cancer.

According to the statistic, every year, approximately, over 80,000 adults, including 62,380 men and 18,810 women in the United States are diagnosed with bladder cancer, causing the of deaths of 12,520 men and 4,720 women.

The 5-year relative survival rate of all stages of bladder cancer is about 77%. However, the 5-year relative survival rate for people diagnosed with stage 0 of bladder cancer is about 98%,

The statistic strongly suggested, if bladder cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, it is treatable.

The exact causes of bladder cancer are unknown. However, the age of 50 and over, men, smoking, long-term exposure to harmful chemicals are associated with the increased risk of the disease,

Some researchers suggested certain medical conditions such as diabetes, previous treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and early menopause are also some of the prevalent risk factors that may increase the early onset of bladder cancer.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

The Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides and flavonoids.

In the reaffirm of traditional medicine use of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi for treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Chung-Ang University College of Medicine launched an investigation to examine the effects of Arbutin, a glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos species) on TCCSUP human bladder carcinoma cell.

At the dose at concentrations of < 500 microg/ml, Arbutin did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects in TCCSUP cells.

In different concentrations that are higher than 500microg/ml, Arbutin significantly decreased TCCSUP cell proliferation in a time-dependent manner.

According to the cell cycle analysis, arbutin strongly disrupted the cell cycle also in a time-dependent manner.

Furthermore, arbutin led to the inactivation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is known to critically regulate cell proliferation.

The in-depth analysis also found that arbutin markedly increases the expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1)which is considered a key mediator of p53-dependent cell cycle arrest.

Where p53, also known as TP53, is a protein which processes a function in regulating the cell cycle division and hence functions as a tumor suppression.

Dr. Li H, the lead author, after taking into account of co and confounders, said, " arbutin inhibits TCCSUP cell proliferation via ERK inactivation and p21 up-regulation".

Abnormal activation of ERK was found to in human cancer due to DNA mutation. The combination of ERK pathway inhibitors (cytostatic agents) and conventional anticancer drugs (cytotoxic agents) are an excellent basis for scientists to develop new chemotherapeutic strategies against cancer.

Taken altogether, herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi containing a high volume of Arbutin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for treatment of bladder cancer,

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi anti-bladder cancer possibilities.

Purple Carrot, the Functional Veggie Which Protects Us Against the Onset of Metabolic Syndrome

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have found a juice which processes a potential effect in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome, the major cause of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, some studies found.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of at least three of the five following medical conditions including high blood pressure and sugar, central obesity, abnormally high levels of blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

In the US, approximately, a quarter of the adult population has metabolic syndrome.

Some researchers suggested, metabolic syndrome is likely associated with a genetic preposition

However, Dr. Stančáková A, the lead author at the University of Eastern Finland in the research of the linkage of genetics in risk of metabolic syndrome, said, "GWA studies for the individual components of the MetS have reported several loci having pleiotropic effects on multiple MetS-related traits" and "Genetic studies have provided only limited evidence for a common genetic background of the MetS".

Other risk factors such as an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, increases with age, with racial and ethnic minorities are also associated with the onset of the condition.

Truly, in the study conducted by the joint study lead by the Leighton Hospital, wrote, "... there was a high prevalence of poor diet, smoking, and inadequate exercise. Many did not follow national recommendations for dietary intake of fruit and vegetables and daily exercise. These factors probably contribute to the high prevalence of metabolic syndrome".

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the differentiation of the effect of purple vegetable in the risk of metabolic syndrome in the animal model, the University of Guelph conducted an evaluation to examine the effect of substitution of the majority of carbohydrate in a high-fat diet with purple potatoes (PP) or purple carrot (PC), for 8 weeks in obese Zucker rats.

After 8 weeks, according to the assay used in the studies, the substitution of PC improved insulin resistance and hypertension, major components of metabolic syndrome, compared to the control.

Dr, the lead author said, "incorporation of purple vegetables in functional food products may provide metabolic/cardiovascular benefits in the background of a high-fat diet that promotes obesity" However, "The bioactives in the vegetables responsible for blood pressure and glucose homeostasis could be different, and their effects could be independent of each other. The specific bioactives of each vegetable and their molecular targets remain to be identified".

This bioactive compound was found to be anthocyanins, a major component in the purple carrot juice.

In the evaluate whether anthocyanins, phenolic acids, and carotenoids, the predominant phytochemicals presented in purple carrots may be used in the treatment of the metabolic syndrome, researchers at the The University of Queensland launched an investigation to examine the activity of anthocyanins in rats fed a high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet as a model of the metabolic syndrome induced by diet.

Before injection with carrots juice, high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats were found to develop many conditions associated the similarity to those of metabolic syndrome, including hypertension, cardiac fibrosis, increased cardiac stiffness, endothelial dysfunction, impaired glucose tolerance, increased abdominal fat deposition, altered plasma lipid profile, liver fibrosis and increased plasma liver enzymes together with increased plasma markers of oxidative stress and inflammation as well as increased inflammatory cell infiltration.

Application of purple juice at the end of the experiment attenuated or reversed all the changes while β-carotene isolated from the juice did not reduce oxidative stress, cardiac stiffness or hepatic fat deposition.

Further analysis of the concentration of the purple carrot juice, researchers wrote, "the juice itself contained low concentrations of carotenoids, it is likely that the anthocyanins are responsible for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of purple carrot juice to improve glucose tolerance as well as the cardiovascular and hepatic structure and function".

These result suggested that anti-metabolic syndrome of purple carrot juice was attributed to the effect of a single bioactive compound, namely, anthocyanins.

Taken altogether, purple carrot juice containing a high amount of anthocyanins may be considered a functional food and secondary therapy  for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome without inducing any side effects

@Herbal Chamomile, The Potential Anti Acute and Chronic Dermatitis Remedy With No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have found a herbal medicine in the treatment of dermatitis, without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

Dermatitis or eczema is a group of diseases characterized by the inflammation of the skin.

There is no single cause of eczema, anything that we face every day can trigger a dermatitis flare, including stress, irritants, climate change, and sweating. However, infection and allergens.are considered the most common causes of the disease.

In the study "Diet and Dermatitis: Food Triggers,  Dr. Rajani Katta, and colleagues at the Baylor College of Medicine, wrote, "Research has found that dietary factors can indeed exacerbate atopic dermatitis or cause dermatitis due to systemic contact dermatitis. In atopic dermatitis, dietary factors are more likely to cause an exacerbation among infants or children with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis relative to other".

This statement indicated a significant effect of foods that can trigger rapidly the immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity reactions,  leading to the late eczematous reaction.

The symptoms of the disease include itchiness, red skin, and a rash. However, long-term dermatitis can cause skin thickening

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

In the study to reaffirm the traditional use of German chamomile (GC) oil for the treatment of skin disorders, researchers at the Howon University launched an investigation of BALB/c mice sensitized twice a week with 100 microL of 1% 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and challenged twice the following week with 100 microL of 0.2% DNCB for atopic dermatitis induction before applying 3% GC oil daily (70 microL, 6 times week) on the dorsal skin for 4 weeks.

Saline or jojoba oil was used for the control mice.

Blood examples collected at 2 and 4 weeks after initiating oil application, researchers found that
* Serum IgE levels were significantly lowered in the GC oil application group at the end of the 4-week application period compared to control groups.

* The GC oil application for 4 weeks results in serum IgG1 level compared with that after 2-week application.

* The GC oil application group showed a significantly lower serum histamine level than the control group 2 weeks after oil application.

* Symptoms of scratching frequency of the GC oil application group was significantly lower than either control groups.

These results suggested that GC oil's immunoregulatory potential for alleviating atopic dermatitis through the influencing of Th2 cell in the inflammatory response.

Additionally, in the examination of concomitant desire to use natural products to treat skin conditions, researchers launched an investigation to review the scientific and clinical studies in the evaluating composition and clinical usefulness of natural products in the treatment of inflammatory skin dermatoses.

Chamomile is found to process a significant effect in erythema induced by ultraviolet light, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, sensitive and irritated skin, drug-induced skin eruptions, and psoriasis, compared to
colloidal oatmeal, feverfew, licorice, aloe vera, chamomile, and turmeric

Dr. Wu at the final report, said, "These products may be particularly well suited as alternatives to pharmacologic therapies in chronic conditions for which long-term use is required".

Taken altogether, Chamomile processed  anti-inflammatory activity may be particularly well suited as alternatives to pharmacologic therapies in chronic dermatitis for which long-term use is required

Herbal Catnip, the Herbal Remedy Which Improves Memory Naturally

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Herbal Catnip (Nepeta cataria) may process a significant effect in improving memory, some scientists suggested.

Memory is the faculty in which information is stored and processed.

About 90% of all the brain’s neurons are located in the cerebral cortex, mainly in the "grey matter", including the prefrontal cortex, which plays an important role in processing short-term memories and retaining longer term memories.

Short-term memory is a capacity to hold a short information in mind in an active, ready to be used for a short period of time.

Longer term memories are held in the brain indefinitely.

The most causes of memory loss are associated with physical injury to the brain and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's or Huntington's disease.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, cold and flu, skin irritation stimulates sweating, promote menstruation, etc..

In the aim to reaffirm the statement that plants and vegetables with antioxidant activity can reduce oxidative damages in the brain and improve cognitive functions, researchers at the Qom University of Medical Sciences conducted an examination of the effects of Nepeta (Catnip) menthoides aqueous extract on memory retention and retrieval of mice by using passive avoidance apparatus.

By doses: 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg kg(-1), Nepeta menthoides aqueous extract significantly increased memory retention and retrieval.

The best response to memory retention and retrieval was achieved by a dose of 800 mg kg(-1) of Nepeta extract,

Further analysis suggested that the effects of Nepeta extract, in enhancing memory were attributed to the antioxidant activity of its components such as rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, and phenolic acids.

Additionally, in the study to evaluate the nootropic activity of essential oil of Nepeta cataria (EONC)  in  scopolamine (0.4 mg/kg, i.p.) induced amnesia in mice, using elevated plus maze and passive avoidance paradigm to observe the learning and memory parameters, researchers found that
* Application of the essential oil (1gm/kg) significantly attenuated memory deficits induced by scopolamine (0.4 mg/kg, i.p.) and natural aging.

* Also, treated aging mice exhibited a decreased transfer latencies and increased step down latencies significantly.

* The anti memory deficits effect of Nepeta cataria were attributed to the influence on central cholinergic activity, including arousal, attention, memory, and motivation, by estimating the whole brain acetylcholinesterase activity in the breakdown of acetylcholine and of some other choline esters that function as neurotransmitters.

Dr. Sease. Satish S. at the final report said, " essential oil of Nepeta cataria might prove to be a useful memory restorative agent in the treatment of dementia seen in elderly".

Taken altogether, herbal Catnip and its essential oil may be considered a secondary therapy for improvement of memory or combined with conventional medicine for prevention of the progressive loss of memory in elderly with neurodegenerative disease.
