Cinnamon: The Wholefood Medicine May Process Anti Cervical Cancer Potency, Studies Found

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Whole food(herbal medicine), linking health benefits in the prevention, management, and treatment of diseases has placed an important role in human history over many centuries.

The finding of whole food medication by renowned scientists all over the world for the replacement of the single ingredient of the Western medicine with little or no side effect has been difficult due to no commercial benefit and patent right to producers.

Cinnamon may be the best wholefood medicine for the prevention, management, and treatment of cervical cancer, some scientists suggested.

Cervical cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by irregular and disorder cells growth in the cervical tissue. In the beginning, cancer starts in the cell of the cervical lining. After completely colonizing the cervix, malignant cells may travel a distance away through lymph and blood to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

According to the statistic, every year approximately, over 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer.

Although the incidence rates for the disease dropped by 50% between 1975 and 2014 due to an increase in screening, cervical cancer still causes over 4,170 deaths this year.

The 5 years survival rate for women diagnosed in the early stage of invasive cervical cancer is 92%. However, in the advanced stage, when cervical cancer has spread to a distant part of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 17%.

The exact causes of cervical cancer are unknown, However, infected by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection due to having sex with men who carry the virus is a major cause of the disease.

Furthermore, women who have many sexual partners, are smoking, use birth control pills (oral contraceptives) for the long-term and engaging in early sexual contact are associated with the increased risk of cervical cancer.

Women, on the early stage of cervical cancer, may not experience any symptoms. If you are having persistent symptoms of abnormal vaginal bleeding, increased vaginal discharge, bleeding after menopause and severe pain during sex and pelvic pain, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of cervical cancer.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the family Lauraceae.

The spicy herb has been used in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

According to the Manipal University, Eugenol, a potential chemopreventive agent, one of the components of cinnamon possesses antiseptic, analgesic, antibacterial, and anticancer properties in the expression of apoptosis and inflammation against cervical cancer cell lines.

In SiHa cancer cell line, established from cancerous tissues of the cervix uteri, methanol extracts of Gymnema sylvestre (GS) leave and Cinnamomum zeylanicum (CZ) bark exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxicity in inducing apoptosis.

Other researchers suggested that the effects of cinnamon against tumor activity, particularly in cervical cancer cell line SiHa may be the result in the reduced number of colonies, the risk of migration potential through down-regulated normal physiological processes.

Dr. Kwon HK, the lead researcher at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, insisted, Cinnamomum cassia bark,.. containing several active components such as essential oils, expressed anti-tumor effect via enhanced pro-apoptotic and inhibited pro-inflammatory activities, in vitro, and in vivo mouse melanoma model.

In fact, the potential anti-tumor effects of cinnamon may be due to the activities that suppress the cancer progression by increasing the levels of cytolytic molecules and functioning.

Although the whole herb medicine may be a potential agent for reduced risk and treatment of cervical cancer, oral use of cinnamon should be taken with care and only prescribed by a herbalist.

Additional data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food cinnamon during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of the spicy herb anti-cancer possibilities.

Green Tea, The Beverage, Which Improves The Brain Functions in All Aspects, Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea intake regularly may have a potential influence of many aspects of the brain functions some scientists suggested.

The brain and the spinal cord form a central nervous system that consists of the ability to control our thoughts, memory, and speech, muscles, and the function of many organs.

People with brain impairment caused by a disease or injury may experience the decline of some conscious mental activity, including speech, learning, and memory. In severe cases, patients may also have a reduced daily function and independence.

In neurodegenerative disease, the progressive death, and loss of neurons function that affects the different regions of the brain may facilitate memory loss, forgetfulness, apathy, anxiety, agitation. a loss of inhibition and mood changes. In severe cases, the disease can cause a substantial reduction of the quality of life.

As of today, the treatment of neurodegenerative disease in conventional medicine is limited only to the symptoms. None of the currently available therapies slow or stop the continued loss of neurons.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

With an aim to find a natural and potential source which processes the ability in enhancing brain function, researchers at the University of South Australia conducted a review of the association between two dietary components of tea, caffeine, and L-theanine, and the psychological outcomes of consumption.

After taking an assessment of the all the selected studies, researchers found that caffeinated tea, injecting at regular intervals, maintains alertness, focused attention, and accuracy and may modulate the more acute effects of higher doses of caffeine.

The interaction of L-theanine on the brain and caffeine exerted the neurochemical effects to enhance performance in terms of attention switching and the ability to ignore the distraction,

However, although, injection of tea stimulated a higher-level cognitive activity, caffeinated tea can cause the detrimental effects to the brain as a result of overstimulation

Additionally, the in-depth differentiation of L-theanine in the modulation of the aspects of brain function suggested
* L-theanine found in tea has a direct effect on the brain.
* L-theanine significantly increases activity in the alpha frequency band which indicates the relaxation of the mind without inducing drowsiness.

These results were provided by the final report of EEG recording in the study of young participants with rest at the baseline and 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 minutes after ingestion of 50mg L-theanine (n=16) or placebo (n=19). The similar results also observed even when the subjects engaged in a passive activity.

Benefits of the increase of Alpha Brain Waves are the deep relaxation of body and mind accompanied with no stresses and worries.

Intesterestly, in the study to examine whether L-theanine injection reduced stress by blocking the binding of L-glutamic acid to glutamate receptors in the brain, researchers launched an investigation including fourteen participants each underwent three separate trials, in which they orally took either L-theanine + placebo, caffeine + placebo, or placebo only.

All participants were assessed on mental task performance and physiological activities under conditions of physical or psychological stress in humans.

Application of L-theanine significantly inhibited the blood-pressure increase in a high-response group, which consisted of participants whose blood pressure increased more than average by a performance of a mental task after placebo intake.

Caffeine exerted a similar but smaller inhibition of the blood-pressure increase caused by the mental tasks.

Also, according to the Profile of Mood States after the mental tasks, L-theanine reduced the Tension-Anxiety scores as compared with placebo intake.

These results suggested that the application of green tea L-theanine not only reduces anxiety but also attenuates the increase in the levels of stress.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that moderate consumption of green tea or tea with abundant of L-theanine processes a positive and profound effect in enhancing brain function in many aspects. However, excessive green tea and tea drinking may cause overstimulation.

Fennel, The Herb Which Causes the Apoptosis of Cancer Cells, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food or herb with the potential to activate the protein that programs the death of cancer cells, some studies found.

Cell death is a natural process to warrant the normal development of cells and the cell cycle maturation and maintain the normal function body in the optimized state.

However, some microorganisms are found to process the activity in triggering cell death for their own survival.

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a function of the immune system evolved as a rapid and irreversible process to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells, including cells that were damaged by the alternation of DNA or infection

Cancer apoptosis is an action that causes cancer cells to die off with or without affecting the nearby cells.

Some herbal medicine such as fennel was showed to induce the function of overexpression of levels of free radical in initiating cytotoxic effect that targets cancer cells while protecting the healthy cells through its antioxidant activity.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the study to investigated several herbal plants ethanol extracts from fruits of their apoptotic activity from fruits of seven species of Apiaceae family, namely, Eryngium planum, Archangelica officinalis, Pastinaca sativa, Heracleum sibiricum, Carum carvi, Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), and Levisticum officinale against ML-1—human acute myeloblastic leukaemia, J-45.01—human acute T cell leukaemia, EOL—human eosinophilic leukaemia, HL-60—human Caucasian promyelocytic leukaemia, 1301—human T cell leukaemia lymphoblast, C-8166—human T cell leukaemia, U-266B1—human myeloma, WICL—human Caucasian normal B cell, and H-9—human T cell, researchers found that
The ethanol extract from fruit F. vulgare shows the highest mortality in Trypan blue test for J45 cell line with 4% of viable cells and a C8166 cell line with 100% of mortality.

* The extract also shows the highest viability in other cell lines, including the HL60 with 60%, EOLwith 48%, and ML1 with 42%. The normal cell line H9 and WICL showed 35% and 25% of viable cells, respectively.

Furthermore, in the reaffirm the use of fennel in traditional cancer treatment, researchers at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU), launched a study to demonstrate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect of chloroform fraction of fennel (CFF) in MCF-7 cells.

Application of fennel showed to inhibit the growth against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-237 in time- and concentration-dependent manners.

Fennel induced a apoptosis of around 49% at the doses of 0.5 mg/ml of CFF and PI-stained cells showed the G1 phase cell cycle arrest, according to the Annexin V/PI-assay.

More importantly, application of fennel also was found to reduce the elevated levels of ROS, disrupted mitochondrial membrane and increased levels of caspase-9 & caspase-3 and DNA fragmentation in the promoted of MCF-7 cells death.experienment

Dr. Syed FQ, the lead author in the final assessment of the experiment said, "(The results) revealed the proliferation inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction effect of CFF, which may help in exploring the novel anti-cancer drug for therapeutic implications".

Moreover, in the study to examine whether anethole, a major bioactive compound found in fennel, anise, and camphor processes anti-metastatic and apoptotic effects on highly-metastatic HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma tumor cells, researchers found that
* Despite weak cytotoxicity against HT-1080 cells, anethole inhibits the adhesion to Matrigel and invasion of HT-1080 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

* Anethole is also able to down-regulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 with anti-apoptotic function and up-regulate the gene expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 with apoptotic function.

Finally, anethole significantly decreased mRNA expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), but not uPA receptor (uPAR) in the facilitated cancer cell death.

Taken all together, fennel alone or its extracts and bioactive compound anethole may be considered adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for treatment of cancers

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenols Suppress the Onset and Progression of Osteoporosis, Medline Studies Find

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by progression in the reduction of bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue and considered a major health problem in both elderly men and women.

The diseases also affect all bone in the body, including the bones of the spine, hip, and wrist

Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.

Osteoporosis is the common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency such as
* Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption,

*  Reduced hormone production, the drop of estrogen levels after menopause, can speeds up bone loss.

* Reduced production of bone mass and increased bone reabsorption.

These results suggested that osteoporosis can make bone more fragile and easier to break. In elderly, osteoporosis can be dangerous, as fractures can cause prolonged immobility, and required a longer healing process.

Some researchers suggested that fractures in the older population are the most common cause of blood clots or pneumonia, both of which can have fatal consequences.

Long-term use of certain medicines, such as anti-seizure drug Glucocorticoids and medical conditions such as kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, and an overactive thyroid or parathyroid, can also increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Dr. Stephen P Tuck, the lead author in the study Osteoporosis in men said, "The incidence of osteoporotic fractures in elderly men, just as in aged women, increases exponentially with age; the rise in men, however, is some 5–10 years later than in women. Up to 50% of male osteoporosis have no identifiable etiology; however elderly males have a much higher likelihood of having an identifiable secondary cause than younger men".

Truly, both male and female share the same conditions of the onset of osteoporosis, but the onset of the disease in men is about 10 years later, compared to a woman in the same age.

Interestingly, in the observation of hip fracture in the aging population, Dr. Eric Orwoll, a physician-researcher who studies osteoporosis at Oregon Health and Science University wrote, “A third of all hip fractures occur in men, yet the problem of osteoporosis in men is frequently downplayed or ignored.”

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the study to evaluate the effects of ingestion of green tea and green tea bioactive compounds in mitigating bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures in both elderly women and men, researchers found that the applications exert significant activities in reducing the onset of osteoporosis, through their antioxidants and initiation of the production of natural antioxidant in the body such as glutathione and enzymes (e.g., catalase and superoxide dismutase) in inhibiting the levels of ROS that facilitate the chain reaction.

Truly, the overexpression of free radicals has been associated with the change in the balance between activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, leading to osteoclasts in destroying the calcified tissue and inducing bone remodeling.

These results demonstrated that green tea and its bioactive components exhibit a significant decrease in the risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density and preventing free radicals in damage the bone-forming osteoblasts while suppressing osteoclastic activities.

Moreover, in the review of the effect of green tea and its bioactive components on bone health, researchers indicated that the ingestions display an impressive osteoprotective impact on bone mass and microarchitecture in various bone loss models associated with aging, sex hormone deficiency, and chronic inflammation.

The implication of reduced onset and progression of osteoporosis in the aging population due to sex hormone deficiency may be attributed to green tea and its bioactive compound in increasing the levels of osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreasing serum of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a bone resorption marker and improving the body in the absorption of calcium.

In fact, the serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) are considered effective measurements in the rate of bone turn over in patients with osteoporosis.

Interestingly, application of green tea and its bioactive compound also is found to modulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, through inhibiting the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the liver in initiating inflammation and reducing levels of interleukin-1 and 6(IL-1-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), the sensitive markers of systemic inflammation.

These differentiation were supported by the study in the evaluation of the efficacy of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) at mitigating bone loss and microstructure deterioration along with related mechanisms in 40 androgen-deficient aged male rats, a model of male osteoporosis, randomly assigned to received A 2 (sham vs. orchidectomy) × 2 (no GTP and 0.5% GTP in drinking water) for 16 weeks.

At the end of experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft, and decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft; and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity.

The findings indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreasing cortical and trabecular bone loss and increasing both bone density by stimulating the overexpression of bone formation and reducing bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional foods in ameliorating early onset, progression and combined with standard medicine for treatment of osteoporosis.

However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Papaya, The Fruit Which Protects Our Body Against Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Papaya is found to process anti acute and chronic inflammatory activity that may be considered an adjunct therapy for treatment of several chronic diseases, some scientists suggested

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Chronic inflammation is the results of the immune system inability to kill off all the microorganism participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

Inflammation is also can be caused by overexpression of free radical compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant, the major cause of oxidative stress.

Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, DNA that initiate the development of numbers of chronic diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a)

In the reaffirm fruit and vegetables have therapeutic potential as they dampen inflammation with no known side-effects, researchers at the Universiti Putra Malaysia launched an evaluation to examine the effect of papaya on the activity of Th1 (IFN-γ(+) CD4(+))/Th2 (IL-4(+)CD4(+)) T cells play in mediating inflammatory responses.
According to the flow cytometry methods. application of papaya exerted a potential effect in down-regulation of IFN-γ(+) CD4(+) (p=0.03, n=13) in the expression of inflammatory markers and up-regulation of IL-4(+) CD4(+) (p=0.04, n=13) T cells, CD3(+) CD4(+) CD25(+) CD127(-) in productiuon of anti inflammatroy sytokines.

Tregs, regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a specialized subpopulation of T cells that act to suppress the immune response in the production of the proteins related to inflammation, were found after papaya consumption.

In vitro cultures, papaya up-regulates Tregs in male subjects and was significantly associated with suppression of the levels of IL-1β and other inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Abdullah M., the lead author said, "Papaya consumption may exert an anti-inflammatory response mediated through Tregs and have potential in alleviating inflammatory conditions".

Furthermore, in the reconfirmation of papaya anti-inflammatory effect in patients with sepsis, a serious unbalanced hyperinflammatory condition, researchers found that pretreatment of mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in papaya inhibits sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling, the mediators with function in stimulated the production of  in elevated inflammatory cytokines.

Moreover, MF dose-dependently also up-regulates the expression and activity of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 which plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation in the lung of septic mice, leading to the elimination of the septic lung injury.

The findings suggested that MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators

Taken all together, papaya and its bioactive compound mangiferin (MF)  may be an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for treatment in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.

How to Block the Onset of Oral Diseases Naturally

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have found a phytochemical isolated from carrots which processes a significant potential in acting as a nonsurgical aid in the treatment of oral diseases, some studies suggested.

Oral diseases are groups of a medical condition, including dental cavities, periodontal (gum) disease, oral cancer, oral infectious diseases, trauma from injuries, and hereditary lesions.

Some researchers suggested that oral health is an important part of your overall health.

The Ireland dental Health Association in the article Links between oral & general health wrote, "A healthy mouth enables not only nutrition of the physical body, but also enhances social interaction and promotes self-esteem and feelings of well-being" and "Bacteria from the mouth can cause infection in other parts of the body when the immune system has been compromised by disease or medical treatment".

Therefore, maintaining a healthy oral health may result in reducing the risk which links the oral disease to other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Truly, there are some tips that may help you to prevent the oral health problems, including visiting your dentist one to two times a year for a cleaning and checkup. brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste a minimum of two times per day, replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months and floss at least once per day, according to the article published on health Line.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the aim to find a natural pigment with potential to improve the oral health, researchers at the Swami Devi Dyal Hospital and Dental College conducted an experiment on some of the various classes of pigments in nature, particularly, the pigment lycopene, a red plant pigment found in tomatoes, apricots, guavas, carrots, watermelons, papayas, and pink grapefruits, with tomatoes being the largest contributor to the dietary intake of humans.

Application of lycopene not only exhibits higher antioxidant activity through the ability as a singlet oxygen quenching phytochemical, but also exerts a multifunctional role as a nonsurgical aid in the treatment of oral diseases like leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, lichen planus, oral squamous cell carcinoma, and also prevents the destruction of periodontal tissues.

The findings suggested adding 1 or 2 portions of tomatoes into your daily diet can provide a absolute protection for your oral health.

Furthermore, in the examine the link between chronic periodontitis (CP), a multifactorial infecto-inflammatory disease caused by the interaction of microbial agents present in the biofilm and oxidative stress (OS), an imbalance of the ratio between free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body, researchers at the Federal University Rio Grande do Sul conducted a randomised, controlled, double-blind or blind studies to evaluate the effect of selected antioxidant
in chronic periodontitis patients.

Antioxidant including in the study are lycopene, vitamin C, vitamin E, capsules with fruits/vegetables/berry.

At the final report of the experiment, researchers indicated that only lycopene and vitamin E demonstrated statistically significant improvement when compared to a control group in terms of periodontal parameters.

These results were observed through oxidative stress pattern throughout the study. As only lycopene and vitamin E showed a reduction of the levels of oxidative stress compared to others.

Moreover, in the evaluation of the effect of lycopene along with routine scaling and root planing in terms of changes in clinical parameters and levels of circulating tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), salivary interleukin 1beta (IL-1ß), and uric acid in chronic periodontitis, researchers launched a randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel design, double-blinded trial in a total of 42 subjects/

Out of 42 subjects were assigned to the test group (n = 21) received 8 mg lycopene/day and placebo group (n = 21) along with adjunctive scaling and root planing. Patients were monitored at baseline and at 2 months after therapy.

At the end of the study, researchers found that test group (Lycopene) showed better results after therapy compared to the placebo group with all assays, including Periodontal parameters regarding plaque index (PI), modified gingival index (MGI), bleeding on probing (BOP).

Although the serum TNF-α value, the pro-inflammatory cytokine was not statistically significant, it, however, showed an improvement compared to the placebo group.

Taken all together, tomato and carrot processed abundant phytochemical lycopene may be an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for prevention and treatment of oral diseases.

Therefore, adding 2 or 3 portions of tomatoes or carrots or intake of lycopene supplement, according to the guideline on a regular basis may give you a perfect breath and oral health.

White Button Mushroom Which inhibits the Onset of Prostate cancer

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

White button mushroom may be considered a functional food in inhibiting the early onset of prostate cancer, some scientist found.

Prostate cancer is cancer originated from the inner lining of the prostate gland caused by irregular prostate cell growth. Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer. However, they can be deadly in the advanced stage by traveling a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most prostate cancers are found in the yearly annual physical exam, designed for the male at a higher risk of prostate cancer.

The exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown. However, the most common risk factor associated with the onset of the disease is genetic mutation inherited from the parents. mutation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 reserves the function of tumor suppressor genes which normally repair mistakes in a cell's DNA to allow DNA mutation of the prostate cells.

Other risk factors also include age, family history, ethnicity and longterm exposure to organ agents.

Unhealthy diet and lifestyle are also the most common preventable risk factors for the onset of the disease.

Dr. Sandaly O. S. Pacheco,, the lead author in the study "Food Habits, Lifestyle Factors, and Risk of Prostate Cancer in Central Argentina: A Case-Control Study Involving Self-Motivated Health Behavior Modifications after Diagnosis" wrote, "(Patients diagnosed with prostate cancer have) a greater mean consumption of meats and fats and lower intakes of fruits, green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains than the controls (all p < 0.001)".

Therefore, reducing the intake of meats and fats, and actively engaging in the dietary modifications with increased consumption of fish, fruits (including red fruits in prostate cancer), cruciferous vegetables, legumes, nuts, and black tea may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source.

It is a genus A. Muscaria and belonging to the family Amanitaceae and has been recultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.

Chemical constituents
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil, and D-mannitol.

In the evaluate the effects of white button mushroom extract and its major component, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on prostate cancer cell lines in vitro and mushroom extract in vivo, researchers found that
* Injection of mushroom effectively inhibits cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner and induces apoptosis of the tested cell lines within 72 h of treatment.

* Application of CLA inhibits proliferation in the prostate cancer cell lines in vitro.

* DU145 and PC3 prostate tumor size and tumor cell proliferation are decreased in nude mice treated with mushroom extract, whereas tumor cell apoptosis was increased compared to pair-fed controls.* Application of mushroom in tested mice demonstrated the significant changes in the tumor gene expression compared to controls, according to microarray analysis.

Dr. Adams LS the lead author said, "..., the anticancer potential of phytochemicals in mushroom extract both in vitro and in vivo and supports the recommendation of white button mushroom as a dietary component that may aid in the prevention of prostate cancer in men".

Furthermore, in the study to examine whether Mushrooms, an excellent source of dietary vitamin D2 in the risk of prostate cancer, researchers launched a nested case-control study based on a 13-year follow-up of about 19,000 middle-aged men who attended the first screening visit within the Helsinki Heart Study and free of clinically verified prostate cancer at baseline.

According to record linkage with the files of the Finnish Cancer Registry, 149 prostate cancer cases were identified in the cohort.

After the assessment, researchers found that
* Prostate cancer risk, analyzed by quartiles of the 25-VD levels, was inversely related to 25-VD. In other words, men with a 25-VD concentration below the median are associated with the risk of prostate cancer compared to men with the 25-VD level above the median.

* The prostate cancer risk was highest among younger men (<52 years) at entry and low serum 25-VD (OR 3.1 nonadjusted and 3.5 adjusted).

* The mean age at diagnosis of the patients with a 25-VD concentration above the median was 1.8 years higher than that of patients with vitamin D below the median (63.1 vs 61.3 years).

These results strongly suggested that low levels of plasma 25-VD concentration are a prevalent risk factor of the onset of prostate cancer. In other words, increased consumption of mushroom can increase and maintain blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a healthy range, thus reducing the risk of prostate cancer, regardless of age group.
