Herbal Anise and It's Bioactive Anethole That Kill Fungi Before They Can Cause Infection

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Anise may have a potential and substantial antifungal effect, some scientists suggested.

Antifungal activity is the systematic immune response with an aim to protect the body against damage and injury by destroying fungal invasion during the acute phase of infection.

In the plants, certain chemicals or pigments found the outer layer is also the natural anti microorganisms agents with a function to that protect the plants against certain microorganisms in causing harm and interfering with the plants' survival.

Fungal diseases are often caused by fungi found in the environment. They are easy to treat if diagnosed early. However, untreated and late diagnosed fungal diseases may cause some serious complications such as lung infection, infertility and sometimes be life-threatening due to toxicity.

Dr. Robinson PA, the lead scientist in the study of life-threatening fungal infections in patients who cannot be treated with conventional antifungal agents, wrote, " .......in patients with serious fungal infections who failed to respond to or could not tolerate conventional antifungal therapy. Patients were enrolled if they had a life-threatening fungal infection and conventional therapy had failed to eradicate the infection, had caused serious toxic reactions, or was contraindicated".

If you are currently taking conventional medicine such as clotrimazole, econazole, or miconazole for treatment of fungal infection, please make sure that you know the adverse effects, particularly if you are taking them on a long-term basis.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the evaluation of the antifungal activities of fluid extract and essential oil isolated from Anise researchers at the University of Zagreb found that application of Anise fluid extract displays a significant antimycotic activity against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis, and C. krusei at the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between 17 and 20%
and dermatophyte species (Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis, and M. gypseum) with MIC values between 1.5 and 9.0%.

In compared to the fluid extract, Anise essential oil showed a very strong antifungal activity in yeasts with MIC lower than 1.56% (V/V) and dermatophytes with MIC lower than 0.78% (V/V).

Further, in the examine the efficacy of fluid extract researchers surprisingly found that fluid extract not only does not exert any inhibition of species of C. glabrata but also promotes the growth of activity of Geotrichum spp. in compared to essential oil counterpart.

These results suggested that although the fluid extract and essential oil react differently in fungal inhibition, the essential oil expressed an impressively stronger antifungal activity against all species but weaker in compared to nystatin(an antifungal medication) in Geotrichum spp.

Moreover, due to the statistically significant difference of MIC values (p < 0.01) between the essential oils and the fluid extract of anise, researchers suspected that some very potent fungicidal components must be presented in the essential oil of Anise, but not in the fluid extract or only presented in a very low concentration.

Interestingly, in compared to ketoconazole(an antifungal drug), the fluid extract and essential oil of Anise pronounced a substantially higher or equal antifungal activity.

Dr. Kosalec I, after taking into account other co-founders, said, "Anise essential oil exhibited stronger antifungal activities against yeasts and dermatophytes with MIC values between 0.10 and 1.56% (V/V),(in compared to 1.5 and 9.0% of the extract), respectively".

Some researchers suggested that anethole, a major chemical compound found on Anise essential oil may be the component which exerted a significant effect against plant pathogenic fungi, according to the data obtained by hydro-distillation analyzed for its chemical composition by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Indeed, trans-Anethole of 89.5% and cis-anethole 0.7% were found in high concentration in the essential oil but not in the fluid extract.

Anethole expressed a significant antifungal effect, probably through exhibiting antioxidant activities and stimulating the natural antioxidants produced by the body to protect the healthy cell against oxidative damage induced by expression of ROS caused by the proliferation of fungal species.

More importantly, anethole also inhibited chitin, an important structural component of the cell walls of many fungi indirectly governed by an enzymatic activity in permeabilized hyphae, filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus.in a dose-dependent manner.

These differentiations suggested that anethole may be developed as natural fungicides for plant disease control in fruit and vegetable preservation without inducing intolerantly adverse effect.

Taken together, Anise and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk, progression and combined with conventional medicine for treatment of fungal overgrowth.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) Inhibited Fibromyalgia Caused by Inflammatory Rheumatic Disorders

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of inflammatory-rheumatic-disorders-induced fibromyalgia, some scientists suggested.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain, In other words, patients with the syndrome are experiencing widespread pain and increased sensitivity to pain.

The condition affects over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US.

The inflammatory rheumatic disorder is a condition of autoimmune disorders caused by inflammatory connective tissues, joint, and vessels of the body, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis.

The exact causes of fibromyalgia are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain risk factor, including genetic mutation inherited from the parents, age, emotional and physic abuse in the childhood, gender, and posttraumatic stress disorder are associated with the higher risk of the syndrome develops.

Some researchers also suggested that chronic arthritis, persistent stress, anxiety, and depression and physical inactivity are associated with the increased risk of the onset of the incidence.

Conventional medicine such as pregabalin (Lyrica), duloxetine (Cymbalta), and milnacipran (Savella) used in pain management in patients with FM may be effective, however, they can induce some common side effects including gastrointestinal discomforts, constipation, dry mouth.

In some patient, intake of the medicine may cause the side effect of insomnia, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeats.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the Cairo University, as many as 15-30% of patients with classic inflammatory rheumatic disorders also have a co-morbid fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to the rate of only 2% of the prevalence of FMS in the general population (2%).

These results suggested that rheumatological syndromes have a strong implication in the development of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to other initiators such as stress.

Therefore, patients with chronic rheumatic diseases are capable of triggering condition of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).

Due to the highly correlated rheumatologic disease and FMS component, researchers postulated "Considerations of the FMS component in the management of rheumatologic diseases increase the likelihood of the success of the treatment" and "(prevented) FMS in misdiagnosed as an autoimmune disorder"

In the study of the effect of green tea's active ingredient, epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in risk of inflammatory rheumatic disorders in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice, researchers found that application of green tea demonstrates a substantially marked inhibition of the inflammatory mediators cyclooxygenase (COX) -2 in converting arachidonic acid to stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokine prostaglandin H2, in the catalyzation of symptoms of inflammation in the muscles.

Furthermore, green tea EGCG oral ingestion also inhibited levels of interferon gamma in precipitated inflammation by modulating T-cells and natural killer cells activated by antigens, mitogens or alloantigens to the site of infection.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) involved in systemic inflammation, one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction in mice was also inhibited by injection of green tea EGCG.

These results suggested that green tea ameliorated symptoms expression of inflammatory rheumatic disorders, through attenuating production pro-inflammatory factors without reducing the healing progression of injured tissue.

The above differentiation was supported by the study of green tea extract GTE in ameliorating rat adjuvant-induced arthritis.

According to the researchers, a daily per-oral administration of GTE (200 mg/kg) reduced expression of RA through reducing the levels of MCP-1/CCL2 in expression (which can also be treated by biological agents, such as antibodies and inhibitory peptides) of a variety of diseases characterized by mononuclear cell infiltration involved substantial biological and genetic evidence, including RA.
and GROα/CXCL1 in the recruitment of inflammatory cells in the wound healing process after injury in angiogenesis and in the formation of granulation tissue of wounds.

Additionally, application of green tea beside attenuated the expression of proinflammatory factors.

Green tea also exhibited the production of chemokine receptors CCR-1, CCR-2, CCR-5 by reducing the direct communication between the innate and adaptive immune responses that initiate the development of inflammatory responses. through inactivation of leukocytes in the inflamed tissues in the contribution to the pathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and CXCR1 receptor in binding to IL-8 to reduce the expression some inflammatory cytokines, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).

Some researchers suggested that application of green tea extract may also reduce the symptoms of arthritis through expression of IL-6 levels, as increased levels of Il-6 was associated to the presence and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) found in conventional clinical and laboratory indices and MMP-2 activity in activated immune inflammatory response through inducing production of pro-inflammatory factors.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive compound such as EGCG may have a profound and therapeutic effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia-induced by inflammatory rheumatic disorders through modulating the production of pro and anti-inflammatory proteins.

However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Cinnamon, The Natural Heart Disease Inhibitor Remedy, Scientists Reveal

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

A recent study suggested that cinnamon reduces the risk of heart disease through its antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day and approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Anything that damages the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

There are many causes of heart diseases, depending on general types of defect. However, certain risk factors such as smoking,  high blood pressure, abnormally high levels of triglyceride and cholesterol and abnormally high levels of sugar in your blood due to diabetes or insulin resistance are associated to the increased risk of heart disease.

An unhealthy diet is found to be an important risk factor in coronary heart disease. Foods that increased risks of obesity, high blood pressure, also has a strong impact in elevating the risk of heart disease.

Certain medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes and longterm diet with high in saturated and trans fats and salts, refined sugar, processed food and less in fruits and vegetables and fibers can substantially increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Mutated gene inherited from the parents, sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, poor hygiene, and longterm stress is also considered significant risk factors of the disease.

These results suggested that heart disease can be prevented if you people follow a lifelong healthy eating and lifestyle.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae.

The herb has been used in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

In the examine the anti-heart disease of Cinnamomum verum (family Lauraceae), a medicinal global plant that is used daily by people all over the world for reducing blood pressure, plasma glucose, obesity and ameliorating dyslipidemia, a cluster of metabolic syndrome and risk factors of heart disease., researchers launched a search of literature in the databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Persian Websites.

The keywords search were cinnamon, Cinnamomum, cinnamaldehyde, atherogenic, hypertension, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia. All studies satisfied the criteria and guidelines are include in the evaluation.

Most studies suggested that cinnamon is a cardiovascular protective agent and has a potential effect in reducing MetS complications due to its anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and beneficial effects in lipid profile.

Cinnamon also processed various types of antioxidants and activities in increasing the host antioxidant enzymes such as  SOD, GPX, and CAT that leads to the elimination of ROS as well as decreasing lipoperoxidation (LPO) level and decreases the risk of heart disease and mortality.

The National and international dietary recommendations are to eat between five and 10 servings of fruit and vegetables daily to ensure adequate intake of acute and chronic disease-fighting antioxidant nutrients, including heart disease.

Dr. Hamid Mollazadeh, the lead researchers said, "The antiatherosclerotic effects and preventive vascular diseases of cinnamon resulted from inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation through blockade of thromboxane A2 (TXA2) receptors mediated proliferation by cinnamon" and  "Cinnamophilin, a lignin isolated from C. philippinense, inhibited in vitro human platelet aggregation, alongside [3H] inositol monophosphate formation, thromboxane B2 (TXB2) content".

However, in the concerns of antioxidant effects through the intake of individual antioxidant such as supplementation, the Cleveland Clinic in the article wrote, "Vitamin E did not provide any benefit in lowering mortality compared to control treatments, and it did not significantly decrease the risk of cardiovascular death or stroke" and "Beta-carotene led to small but statistically significant increase in all-cause mortality and a slight increase in cardiovascular death".

The joint study led by the North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences, also suggested the use of cinnamon for prevention and treatment of CVD, probably due to its activities in inhibition of metabolic syndrome (MetS), the leading cause of heart diseases.

In support of the above suggestion, some recent studies reaffirm the importance of cinnamon as a spice and maybe a natural remedy to treat cardiovascular diseases.

Furthermore, intake of cinnamon powder also exerted a beneficial effect on glycaemic control in animals and human models, affecting the progression of metabolic alterations in the early stage of cardiovascular events.

Dr. Deng said, "The hypoglycemic effects of cinnamon and .... were demonstrated in most of the trials with some exceptions" and " Future studies with more defined participants, standardized preparation and dose, and improved trial design and size are warranted".

Taken together, cinnamon may be beneficiary for the prevention, management, and treatment of heart disease, but the quantity used of cinnamon should only be prescribed by a herbalist in the prevention of toxicity.

Fennel, The Natural Anti Skin Aging Functional Food, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reduced stress implication, some scientists suggested.

Skin aging is a process involved a complex biological process induced by a combination of endogenous or intrinsic and exogenous or extrinsic factors, that can not be stopped or prevented, characterizing by features such as wrinkling, loss of elasticity, laxity, and rough-textured appearance

However, by looking after your skin daily, you can delay the process.

The endogenous or intrinsic factors that influence skin aging, include genetics, cellular metabolism, hormone, and metabolic processes.

And, the exogenous or extrinsic factors that may cause the early onset of skin aging include chronic light exposure, pollution, ionizing radiation, chemicals, toxins.

Furthermore, Dr. Shoubing Zhang, the lead author in the study of  Fighting against Skin Aging, The Way from Bench to Bedside, wrote, " This aging process is accompanied with phenotypic changes in cutaneous cells as well as structural and functional changes in extracellular matrix components such as collagen and elastin".

These results suggested that skin aging is not only caused by the complex system involving intrinsic and extrinsic factors but also some factors have yet been discovered.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the carrot family, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the findings the natural ingredient that has a potential effect in protecting the skin against aging, researchers launched an investigation to test whether formulation containing 4% concentrated seed extract of F. vulgare produce the antiaging effect when it was applied.

After an assessment of the data collected during the experiment, researchers found that the formulation shows notable antiaging effect with supporting experimental data related to skin moisture and transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

And, the texture parameter energy showed that the formulation possesses potential antiaging effects.

Additionally, in the study to test the effects of the application of herbal against UVB-induced photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) in vitro, researchers showed that mice treated with fennel exert a strong antioxidant and inflammatory activities in significantly increase production of collagen, elastin and TGF-β1 levels, while blocking the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) production in UVB irradiation,

Elastin is a highly elastic protein in connective tissue that was found to return skin to its original position when it is pressed.

TGF-β1 is a cytokine with function in protecting the skin against inflammation caused by UVB-induced photoaging.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of enzymes that are responsible for the structural component of connective tissue degradation,

Furthermore, fennel dose-dependently also inhibited the production of ROS and enhanced the expression of cytoprotective antioxidants produced by the host tissue, including GSH.

These results suggested that fennel may be a potential botanical agent for the treatment of skin damage induced by UV irradiation.

Moreover, the study to explore the fennel anti-skin aging effect after testing subjects were exposed to ultraviolet radiations (UVR) to induce skin sunburn, the condition that produces harmful entities, reactive oxygen species (ROS) also suggested, creams containing fennel are found to be loaded with antioxidants to quench ROS, leading to photo-protective effects.

Taken all together, fennel containing high amounts of antioxidants may be considered a functional food for treatment of skin damage caused by sun exposure and protection of youthful skin against an imbalance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals as well as maintaining the skin moisture and preventing the transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Coffee, the Beverage Is Associated to the Incidence of Laryngeal Cancer, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

Coffee and coffee caffeine may have potential in reducing risk and treatment of laryngeal cancer, some scientists suggested.

Laryngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the larynx. The cancer cells may spread to other tissues and organs in the late stage via lymph and blood circulation.

The exact cause of laryngeal cancer is unknown. Researchers do not know why people in the same family with the same health conditions and gender, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

However, they do know that certain risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, unhealthy diet, family history, HPV infection and long-term exposure to some chemicals including wood dust, soot coal dust, and paint fumes can increase the risk of cancer.

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents, such as TP53, GSTM3 and NAT2 and long-term use of some medication, such as immune-suppressive drugs to fight off infection such as HIV or AID is considered the prevalent risk factors for the disease development.

According to the statistic provided by the study of  A genetic view of laryngeal cancer heterogeneity
by Dr. María José de Miguel-Luken and colleagues, Out of over 500.000 new cases squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) diagnosed in 2008 worldwide,  151.000 cases (130.000 men and 21.000 women) were laryngeal cancer.

Sadly, the world mortality rate is 2.3/100.000 for all people who are diagnosed with  laryngeal cancer,, causing over 82.000 deaths in 2008.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the concerns of the effect of coffee in the risk of laryngeal cancer, researchers at the Central South University Affiliated The Third Xiangya Hospital conducted a review by searching the medical literature database of Medline and EMBASE for the relevant articles published up to Oct. 2013.

A total of 2,803 cases and 503,234 controls in 10 independent studies satisfied the criteria and guidelines were identified.

After taking into account co and confounders the selected studies,  researchers found that incidence of laryngeal cancer was associated with coffee consumption, compared to non drinkers.

The relative risk of coffee drinkers was 1.47 compared to baseline.

Additionally, according to genetic assay used in the study, researchers also discovered that genetic influence plays an important role in increasing the risk of laryngeal cancer in the coffee consumed population.

Dr. said, "The significant heterogeneity was detected when the association between tea and coffee consumption and the laryngeal carcinoma".

Moreover, researchers found no statistically significant association of cancer incident difference in comparison between moderate and low coffee drinking.

In another word, regardless of volumes, intake of coffee is associated with the risk of the disease.

Additional 1 pack of coffee consumption conferred an RR of 1.22.

Dr. Chen J, the lead researcher said, " A dose-response relationship between coffee intake and laryngeal carcinoma was detected" and "this meta-analysis of observational studies demonstrate that coffee consumption would increase the laryngeal cancer risk".

However,  among the 6 studies that reported the association between coffee consumption and laryngeal carcinoma, only one study was a prospective population-based cohort study, while the rest 5 studies were retrospective hospital based case-control studies using observation of returned survey from participants.

The findings firmly suggested that coffee consumption would increase the laryngeal cancer risk, therefore people who are at a higher risk of laryngeal cancer incidence may want to reduce or completely withdraw from coffee consumption.

Taking all together, coffee and coffee caffeine intake may have a negative effect in increasing risk laryngeal cancer but researchers suggested that genetic and environmental factors such as alcohol intake, human papillomaviruses infection, and silica exposure should be also taken into account. which were excluded in some studies.

Catnip, the Natural Dopamine for Penile Erection and Male Sexual Desire

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Herbal catnip processed a high amount of dopamine may be considered a functional herb used to prevent and treat penile erection and increase male sexual desire, some scientists suggested.

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter plays an important role in the brain of the human body, including sexual behavior.

Besides in regulation of cognitive, integrative and reward processes, the organic chemical of catecholamine and phenethylamine also can trigger penile erection and control of sexual function by acting on oxytocinergic neurons.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is a condition of a male who can not get or maintain an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse.

Most cases of erectile dysfunction (ED) are associated with medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. However, according to the statistics, the incidence also is associated with
the psychological problems in some men.

Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as increased age, stress, anxiety, drug abuse, excessive alcohol drinking, smoking and particularly in people with the long-term use of certain medication such as diuretics and beta-blockers can facilitate the early onset of the conditions.

Sexual desire is a motivational state and an interest in “sexual objects or activities, or as a wish, or drive to seek out sexual objects or to engage in sexual activities, according to the definition provided by the study of SEX DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES IN FREQUENCY AND INTENSITY OF SEXUAL DESIRE conducted by Dr. Regan, Pamela C.;and Dr. Atkins, Leah

According to the self-reported frequency and intensity of sexual desire among an ethnically diverse sample of 676 men and women, the doctors found that men are experiencing a higher overall level of sexual desire than did women. and in the sex differences with respect to the frequency of sexual desire, Men also are experiencing sexual desire more often than did women.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The common herb has been used in herbal medicine as an insect repellent and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, cold and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc.

In the study to evaluate the effect of Nepeta cataria (NC), catnip on sexual behavior and penile erection researchers at the Paulista University, launched an investigation with male rats acutely fed chow enriched with 10% NC leaves.

All tested rats are randomly divided into 2 groups, the NC group is received for a 4h period the chow enriched with 10% NC leaves while the control groups are received regular chow.

Researchers found that in compared to control groups, NS fed group demonstrates an apomorphine-induced penile erection and motor coordination observed by the general activity in the open field that was assessed 0, 15, 30 and 60 min after treatment.

Dr. Bernardi MM, the lead scientist after considering all co and confounders said, "NC treatment increased male rat's penile erection. A slight facilitation on male rat sexual behavior and a decreased in general activity of NC treated rats were observed. No effects on motor coordination and yawning episodes were detected by the NC treatment".

The findings suggested that NC application may increase penile erection and improve male rat sexual behavior by an action on dopaminergic systems.

In fact, the effect of a pro-erectile dose of apomorphine, a mixed dopamine receptor agonist, also showed a stimulation of dopamine receptors, induced the release of oxytocin in brain to mediating and reinforcing effects of sexual activity in regulating the sexual behaviour (e.g., penile erection) with those controlling sexual motivation and sexual arousal.

Physically, dopamine can trigger penile erection by acting on oxytocinergic neurons located in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and perhaps on the pro-erectile sacral parasympathetic nucleus within the spinal cord.

Dr. Baskerville TA said," dopamine demonstrates the potential existence of an interaction between central dopamine and hormone in controlling sexual reproduction during penile erection.

Several studies suggested that dopamine is a neurotransmitter which processes the potency in regulating and controlling penile erection and sexual behavior, but the use of the herbal medicine should only be prescribed by herbalist to prevent depression.

Taken all together, Herbal catnip may be considered a functional herb to improve erectile dysfunction and sexual desire, without inducing side effects compared to conventional medicine such as Avanafil (Stendra) Sildenafil (Viagra) Tadalafil (Cialis) Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn).

Green Tea and Its Bio-active Flavonoids That Process Anti Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Potency

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing risk and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, some scientists suggested.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a condition characterized by inflammation of the large intestine. The disease affects over 1.6 million American today.

The exact causes of inflammatory bowel disease are unknown. As of today, scientists do not know why, people with the same health conditions, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

Some researchers suggested that the disease may be caused by the immune response failing to kill off the invasion of infectious micro-organisms in the acute phase of digestive tissue injury and damage or immune dysfunction mistakenly attacking the digestive tract, a case of autoimmune disease.

Furthermore, prolonged periods of imbalance of ratio of good and bad bacteria in the colon, long-term intake of certain medicines, age, family history, ethnicity, parasite, unhealthy diet, and smoking are some prevalent risk factors which can lead to the onset of inflammatory bowel disease.

Moreover, if you are living in the Western world, you are also at a higher risk of the onset of the disease.

For example, people who live in Western countries such as the United States and Europe have a higher IBD risk than those in other parts of the world.

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents such as NOD2, ATG16L1and IL23R involved in innate immunity, in the autophagy, and in the inflammatory response may elevate the risk of IBD

Most common symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease are severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. If you are experiencing the above symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule the possibility.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the evaluation of the effect of tea and other sources of flavonoids in reducing inflammatory process in the development and progression of numerous pathological situations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), application of the chemical compound exerted a significant effect in the decrease of  expression of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) that initiates inflammation and inflammatory process through its antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities.

Furthermore, oral administration of flavonoid also decreased the inflammatory factors in the production of cytokines by inhibiting the synthesis and activities of different pro-inflammatory mediators.

Some researchers suggested, the result of flavonoid in reducing inflammation in the intestines may be attributed to the antioxidant activity in inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF, tumor necrosis factor alpha, TNFα, a cytokine or signaling protein with functions involving systemic inflammation in the response to the acute phase of infection.

The benefits of flavonoids in IDB are also found to associate with the preserving of intestinal function and the ability to interfere simultaneously every step in the inflammatory process, including the steps in the production of ROS and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Additional differentiation of the DNA damage induced in vitro in lymphocytes from IBD patients caused by oxidative stress, plant flavonoids, quercetin and epicatechin found in green tea and other sources such as fruits, tea, and soybeans demonstrated a huge effect in inhibiting oxidative stress caused by the toxic chemical injection.

Compared to the lymphocytes from IBD patients and healthy volunteers, treatment of 50 microg/ml H(2)O(2) or 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) in the presence of quercetin (0-250 microg/ml) or epicatechin (0-100 microg/ml) and flavonoid supplementation (250 microM quercetin or 100 microM epicatechins) displays an impressive inhibition of both oxidative substances in the induction of free radical expression.

Overall, applications of quercetin (0-250 microg/ml) or epicatechin (0-100 microg/ml) demonstrated significant effects in decreasing DNA damage by 48.6%  in the group treated with H(2)O(2) and a 43% in IQ group, compared to healthy group of 35.2 and 57.1%, respectively

However, after taking into account other confounders, researchers indicated that compared to patients from ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), quercetin, IQ and epicatechin reduce DNA damage within lymphocytes from UC patients, compared to CD patients.

Dr. Najafzadeh M, the lead author said, " flavonoids dramatically reduced oxidative stress in vitro in lymphocytes from IBD patients and healthy individuals. Thus, flavonoids could be very effective in the treatment of oxidative stress and encouraged in the diet of IBD patients".

Taken all together, green tea with abundant bioactive flavonoids may be considered a functional food for reducing the prevalence risk factors of IBD and used combined with the standard medicine for the treatment of the disease.

Intake of green supplement should be taken with great care as toxicity was reported in some medical literature.
