Andrographis paniculata, The Herbal Remedy Which Protects Neurons Integrity Against Onset of Alzheimer's disease

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Herbal Andrographolide may process a substantial and profound effect in protected neurons integrity against onset of Alzheimer's disease, a common type of dementia, a study suggested.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neuro degenerative disease that is irreversible and starts slowly and worsens over time, affecting patients thinking ability and memory, correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas. The disease is named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

Some researchers suggested that the disease is caused by prolonged period of plaques excessive accumulation in the brain cells, leading to brain cells degeneration and death.

People with Alzheimer's disease may experience the decline of cognitive and functional abilities, change of motions and moods and behavior, particularly, in reducing quality of life due to disability in physical activity.

According to the statistic provided by the Alzheimer.Net, approximately, 44 million people have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia worldwide. The disease is most common in the North America and Western Europe.

Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.

In US, Alzheimer’s cost the United States taxpayer $259 billion in 2017.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,....

According to the joint study lead by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, oral administrated natural product (Andrographolide, ANDRO) isolated from Andrographis paniculata in species Octodon degus (degu) exhibited the recovery of spatial memory and learning performance, through regulated phosphorylated tau protein and amyloid beta aggregate maturation in cell survival in inducing Alzheimer's disease.

Dr., the lead author in the joint study said, "(Andrographolide, ANDRO) inhibited) neural damage associated with aging processes and the behavioral and neuropathological hallmarks of aging-related diseases such as AD"

Additionally, Andrographolide also displayed the inhibitory activity against forming of amyloid beta (Aβ)42 through suppression of NF-κB, a protein that regulates cell survival and function of microglia in activated response to brain damage and immunological stimuli together with the reduction in the production of pro inflammatory cytokines.

In animal study, mice treated with Andrographolide increased neural progenitor cell proliferation and decreased the number of immature neurons in the hippocampus, in compared to age-matched control mice.

Moreover, ANDRO increased the number of newborn dentate granule neurons in various parts of the brain.

The study also found that the efficacy that reduces symptoms and protects against the early onset of AD is the results of the stimulation of neurogenesis in the hippocampus.

Taking together, Andrographis paniculata is surely consisted as a therapeutic potential to protect the development of Alzheimer's disease through various mechanisms, however, intake of large amount daily should be taken with care.

However, additional data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Andrographis paniculata anti Alzheimer's disease possibilities.

Yoga May Be Considered as Secondary Intervention In Prevented Onset of Heart Disease, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton (Scholar, Master of Nutrition, All right reserved)

Yoga intervention may be the new way to improve over all conditions in prevented onset of heart disease, some researchers suggested.

Heart diseases are  a class of disease characterized by a wide range of conditions, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias); and heart defects......

The term of heart disease is used interchangeable with cardiovascular diseases in expressed conditions that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke,  involving narrowed or blocked blood vessels,

According to statistic, in US, heart disease is a leading cause of death in women and men. Approximately, 600,000 Americans die from heart disease every year, representing 1 in every 4 deaths. And coronary heart disease(CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, which kills over 300,000 people in 2015.

Heart disease is caused by a process of plaques building up on the arterial wall, leading to hardening and narrowing of the arteries in resulting of harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. and cause heart diseases.

Today researchers do not why some people are susceptible to plaques forming on the arteries, while other with the same condition and similar diet pattern and life style do not.

Depending to the location where clots were formed, symptoms of heart disease can be classified as follows
* Symptoms caused by abnormal heartbeats (heart arrhythmias) include slow heartbeat (bradycardia) chest pain or discomfort,  shortness of breath, lightheadedness,... and dizziness.

* Symptoms caused by heart defects include light gray or blue skin color, swelling in the legs, abdomen,..... and swelling areas around the eyes.

* Symptoms caused by weak heart muscle include swelling of the legs, ankles and feet, irregular heartbeats,... and dizziness and fainting.

* Symptoms caused by heart infections include shortness of breath,  fatigue,.... and  swelling in your legs or abdomen.

* Symptoms caused by valvular heart disease include fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat,.... and swelling on the feet or ankles.

Heart diseases which are diagnosed early are easy to treat, some researchers suggested that if you experience prolonged chain pain, shortness of breath and frequent fainting, you may have heart diseases, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the review literature extracted from Medline/PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and IndMED up to October 2013 in evaluated quality of evidence and the strength of recommendation for yoga as an ancillary intervention for heart disease. 7 Seven RCTs met the criteria selected with a total of 624 patients participated in yoga class showed
* Yoga therapy reduced a number of angina episodes.

* There were low evidences suggested that yoga reduced modifiable cardiac risk factors, heart failure, and improved health-related quality of life.

* Yoga intervention group also showed insignificantly effects on patients with nonfatal device-treated ventricular events

Dr. Cramer H, the led author said, "RCTs reported safety data and reported that no adverse events occurred" and " ..... weak recommendations can be made for the ancillary use of yoga for patients with coronary heart disease".

Truly, yoga slow breathing enhances arterial  muscle to relax and  posture improves blood flow in the arteries in provided nutrients and oxygen to the body needs, thus reducing the risk of narrowing arteries in induction of blood clots.

Furthermore, by normalizing the blood flow in the arteries, yoga also reduces risk of symptoms that cause diminishing quality of life in people with high risk of heart disease

Additionally,  in the analysis of some publication, researchers at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital showed that
* Some randomized studies expressed favorably that yoga may be effect in both early and advanced coronary atherosclerosis.

* Yoga participants also showed to improved atrial fibrillation.

However, in a review of the updated publication by searching the broaden database from Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in The Cochrane Library (Issue 1 of 12, 2014), MEDLINE (1948 to February week 1 2014), EMBASE (1980 to 2014 week 6), Web of Science (Thomson Reuters, 1970 to 12 February 2014), China Journal Net (1994 to May 2014), WanFang Data (1990 to May 2014), and Index to Chinese Periodicals of Hong Kong (HKInChiP) (from 1980) up to 2012. to examine the influence of yoga practice on CHD outcomes in men and women (aged 18 years and over) with a diagnosis of acute or chronic CHD, researchers indicated that there were no studies met the guideline and criteria, therefore, recommended use of yoga for secondary prevention in CHD remains uncertain.

n that concerns of the yoga efficacy, Dr. Manchanda SC, the led author said, "most studies have several limitations like lack of adequate controls, small sample size, inconsistencies in baseline and different methodologies,.." and "therefore large trials with improved methodologies are required to confirm these findings".

Taking altogether, yoga may have some evidences in reduced risk and treatment of heart disease, but a cohost and large sample size of study are necessary before yoga intervention is recommended as secondary therapy.

Asparagus, The Functional Food Which Normalizes Levels of Blood Cholesterol and Prevents Lipid Peroxidation

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Asparagus may have a potential and therapeutic effect in normalize levels of blood cholesterol in patients who were diagnosed hyperlipidemia, some scientists suggested.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat.

However too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels lipids (fats) in the blood, including cholesterol and triglyceride.

In other words, hyperlipidemia can also defined as a raised LDL-c, triglyceride-rich lipoprotein excess, and increased lipoprotein(a) as well as lowered HDL-c, according to the secondary causes of hyperlipidemia by Dr. Stone NJ.

The exact causes of abnormally elevated levels lipids (fats) are debatable. Some researchers suggested that certain medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism may also have a positive influence on the onset of the syndrome.

According to the Guangxi Medical University, in the comparisoeroln of the effect of hyperglycemia among the Han who are the largest group and Bai Ku Yao who are the isolated subgroup of the Yao minority, researchers after considering other con and co founders at the end of the experiment said, "The prevalence of hyperlipidemia was significantly lower among ethnic Bai Ku Yao than among ethic Han individuals, which might mainly be attributed to the more favorable dietary patterns, lifestyle choices, and physical activity levels in the former ethnic group".

These results strongly insisted that unhealthy diet and life style play important roles in initiation of the onset of hyperlipidemia.

Most patients with hyperlipidemia do not experience any symptoms. Hyperlipidemia is usually detected during a routine blood test, or following a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke..

Asparagus is a flowering plant belong to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa and western Asia.

The plant or food has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In the study of the effects of asparagus (500 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day) and their partially purified fractions in flavonoids (50 mg/kg bw/day), saponins (5 mg/kg bw/day) and dietary fiber (500 mg/kg bw/day) on oxidative status and on lipid profile in rats fed a cholesterol-rich diet, researchers found after 5 weeks, administration of asparagus improves the plasma lipid profile and prevents hepatic oxidative damage under conditions of hypercholesterolemia through its bioactive constituents, especially dietary fiber and flavonoids.

Furthermore, treated groups also exhibited a significant increase in enzyme activity from multiple hepatic antioxidants produced by the host, including: superoxide dismutase, catalase, and gluthhatione reductase/peroxidase as well as a decrease in MDA concentrations in compared to HCD group.

These results showed that asparagus ant its bioactive compounds also process anti oxidative and lipidperoxidative activities.

Moreover, additonal analysis also found that intake of asparagus does not have any effect on levels of HDL cholesterol.

Dr. García MD, the lead author at the final report, wrote, " the intake of green asparagus from Andalusia (Spain) helps to regulate plasma lipid levels and prevents oxidative damage in hypercholesterolemic conditions".

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers clinical studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the condition will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus hypolipidemic possibilities.

Herbal Butterbur, The Anti Acute and Chronic Migraine Herbal and Functional Remedy, Scientists Say

Herbal butterbur may be considered as functional herb in protection of neurons against change in the brain and its surrounding blood vessels in initiated onset of migraine, some scientists suggested.

Migraine headache is one most common headache defined as condition of chronic neurological disorder of moderate to severe headaches, and nausea that usually develop gradually over 5–20 minutes and last for less than 60 minutes.

According to the statistic, the syndrome affects over 15% of the population in US.  If you are women your risk of migraine headache is at 2 times higher in compared to men.

Sadly, 1 in 7 people in the world population will develop migraine headache at some points in their life time, And, chronic migraine affects about 2% of the world population.

Some patients during migraine attack also suffer symptoms of visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face.

Believe or not, 10% school age children also suffer from undiagnosed migraine headache.

Conventional medicine in reduced symptoms of pain during attack such as Sumatriptan, Rizatriptan,..and Eletriptan may be effective but they may induce certain side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, dizziness, drowsiness,... and muscle weakness.

Please make sure that you discuss these side effect with your doctor before taking.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in herbal medicne used as an pain reliever in digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The Chemical constituents
The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

Although the herb is used as nutritional supplement in US, scientific studies suggested that it may be used as the prevention of allergic rhinitis and treatment of migraine.

In a three-arm, parallel-group, randomized trial comparing Petasites extract 75 mg bid, Petasites extract 50 mg bid, or placebo bid in 245 patients with migraine, satisfied the International Headache Society criteria, researchers found that by calculating the migraine attack frequency per month as percentage change from baseline over a 4-month treatment period

* Migraine attack frequency was reduced by 48% for Petasites extract 75 mg bid (p = 0.0012 vs placebo), 36% for Petasites extract 50 mg bid (p = 0.127 vs placebo), in compared to 26% of placebo group.

* The proportion of patients with a > or =50% reduction in attack frequency after 4 months was 68% for patients in the Petasites extract 75-mg arm and 49% for the placebo arm (p < 0.05).
* In compared to the baseline, patients, intake of Petasites 75 mg also also expressed a significant effect in reduced migraine at 1, 2, and 3 months.

* Mild adverse effects such as gastrointestinal events, predominantly burping. were also reported.

These results sugegsted that butterbur Petasites extract 75 mg bid is more effective than placebo and is well tolerated as a preventive therapy for migraine.

Furthermore, in the review to confirm the strength of evidence of effectiveness for Petasites hybridus in treating prophylaxis of migraine by searching several databases and other sources to identify randomised-controlled trials, the Headache Center Hirslanden in Zürich, Switzerland found 2 trials totalling 293 patients (60 and 233 patients).

According to the selected trials, oral administrated butterbur extract at higher dose (150 mg) expressed a greater decreased frequency of migraine attacks and a greater number of responders (improvement>50%) after treatment over 3-4 months in compared to the extract at lower dose (100 mg) and placebo.

Additional differentiation also found some evidences that higher than the recommended dose may be more effective in treating prophylaxis of migraine.

More profoundly, in the study of 60 patients received either the special Petasites hybridus extract Petadolex or placebo at a dosage of two capsules (each capsule contains 25 mg) twice daily over 12 weeks, researchers found that

* Oral injection of the capsules Petadolex reduces the frequency of migraine attacks decreased by a maximum of 60 percent in compared to the baseline.

* No adverse events were reported. Petasites was exceptionally well tolerated.

Taking altogether,  herbal butterbur extract may be considered as  therapeutic treatment in  acute and chronic migraine headache, however, exact dose should only be prescribed by herbalist.

Yoga Intervention Improves Overall Conditions of Patients With Coronary Heart Disease

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga may have a profound and positive impact on secondary prevention and improvement on overall conditions in individuals with coronary heart disease, some studies suggested.

Coronary artery disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaques that block arteries in supply blood nutrients and oxygen to the heart. Most cases of the disease are associated with atherosclerosis, the condition of hardening of the arteries.

According to statistic, coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease that causes the death of over  370,000 people every year, representing 28% of all death in the United States.

Sadly, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, approximately, 735,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.

What cause plaques building up on the arterial is debatable. However, researchers suggested that Western diet is associated with significantly increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Dr. Venegas-Pino DE in the classification of the effect of diet on heart diseases said," the western-diet-fed male ApoE-/-: Ins2+/Akita mouse, with profound cardiovascular disease involving extensive atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarct resulting in shortened lifespan(4)".

Most common symptoms of coronary artery disease are angina, the condition characterized by chest pain or discomfort and shortness of breath as a result of the weakening of heart muscle which can not pump enough blood to the body needs.

Over time, the prolonged weakened heart muscle can lead to complications of heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia.

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia.

In a total of 80 stable CAD patients below 65 years of age of both sexes selected and randomized into two groups of 40 each. yoga Group I with for 3 months yoga lessons consisted yogic postures, pranayama breathing exercises, dietary modification, and holistic teaching along with their conventional medicine while Group II treated only on conventional medicine after 3 months, researchers found that,

*Groups attended yoga lessons expresses statistically significant improvements slow vital capacity, forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow rate, maximum voluntary ventilation, and diffusion factor/ transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide in compared to group II.

* The lung function in forced respiratory volume in 1(st) sec (FEV1), and FEV1 % also shows a trend toward improvement although not statistically significant in also compared to conventional treatment group.

Dr, Yadav A, the led authors after the experiment said, "Yoga regimen was found to improve lung functions and diffusion capacity in CAD patients besides improving cardiovascular functions".

These results suggested that yoga postures and meditation have a profound effect in relaxed arterial muscle to allow more blood to flow through by reduced stress which causes the muscle wall tightening.

Furthermore, yoga posture and breathing technique also improved the lung muscle in the absorption of more oxygen for the blood.

In support of the above analysis, Dr. Pal A, and colleagues conducted a study of 258 patients from the Department of Cardiology in Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University diagnosed with coronary artery disease randomly divided into 2 groups, the yoga group and the non-yoga group with 129 in each group, yoga attendees after 35-40 min/day, 5 days a week over a period of 18 months displayed a statistically significant reduction in body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate (P < 0.05).

The relaxation to allow more blood to provide nutrients and oxygen to the body needs may also result in reducing the blood pressure, thus lowering the heart rate.

After taking into account of other risk factors, researchers suggested that yoga therapy expressed a significant effect on secondary prevention of mortality and morbidity and health-related quality of life of individuals with coronary heart disease,

Carrot, The Functional Food Which Reduces Gastric/Stomach Cancer Risk By 26%

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of gastric cancer, some scientists suggested.

Gastric cancer is a slowly developed condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the stomach tissue. At he later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of the tissue and organs.

According to the US cancer society, approximately over 26000 new cases of gastric cancer are diagnosed in 2018 inducing death of over 10,000 patients.

The risk that a man and woman will develop gastric cancer in their lifetime is 1 in 95 and 1 in 154 respectively.

The exact causes of gastric cancer are unknown, some researchers suggested that older people, male, heavy smokers, people who with family history of gastric cancer and certain ethnic groups such as
Asian (especially Korean or Japanese), South American, or Belarusian descent are at increased prevalent risk of gastric cancer.

Interestingly, during past several decades, the numbers of common gastric cancer are showed a tendency of receding, however, at the same time, cancer at the area where the top part of the stomach  meets the lower end of the swallowing tube (esophagus) has increased rapidly.

Also, some medical conditions such as lymphoma, H. pylori bacterial infections,  tumors in  digestive system and stomach polyps are  associated to risk of the disease.

If you experiment of persistent feeling floated after eating, and small meal after eating, heart burn, indigestion,... and stomach pain accompanied of general symptoms of cancer such as unexplained weight loss, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of gastric cancer..

Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a sub spices of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the investigation the hypothesis of "eating carrots may play a major role in the prevention of gastric cancer", researchers at the joint study lead by the J Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences conducted a medical literature review selected from the data bases of including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Persian databases like Scientific Information Database (SID) and IranMedx, those studies satisfied the guidelines and criteria showed that risk of gastric cancer reduced by 26% with the consumption of carrots.

After taking into account of other co factors, researchers warranted that the result does not showed the possibility of a publication bias, according to the funnel graph by comprehensive meta analysis/2.0 software.

Although without mentioning the amount intake daily, these results showed an inverse relationship between the consumption of carrots and the risk of gastric cancer.

Furthermore, in the analysis of the effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) overgrowth in risk of gastric cancer, scientists found that injection of gene of UreB into carrot by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation expressed a significant effect in regenerated carrot plants the expressed UreB protein accounted for 25mug/g roots in reduced expression of H. pylori.

The same application also showed a similar effect in immune response in inhibition of infection of bacterial Helicobacter pylori in mice.

These result suggested that certain chemical compounds in carrot may consist a strong anti micro organism activity by protecting the plant against bacterial infection.

Therefore, UreB transgenic carrot can be potentially used as an edible vaccine for controlling H. pylori but also ameliorated risk of the bacteria in induction of gastric cancer.

The illustration of above differentiation were supported by the study conducted by the Graduate School of Fudan University.

According to the evaluation of the Wuxing soup containing Daikon Radish Leaves (Green element) Daikon Radish (White element) Carrots (Red color element) Burdock Root (Yellow element) Shittake Mushroom (Black element), application of the soup to the human gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (SGC-7901) expressed a huge inhibitory activity in reduced tumor cells proliferation in a time and dose dependent manner.

More importantly, Wuxing soup induced tumor cell death through apoptotic morphological changes and DNA ladder of the tested SGC-7901 cells.

Additionally, used combination with calcium inhibitor Bapta AM, an intracellular calcium chelator not only exerted a strong effect in  reduced the cancer apoptotic rate but also protected SGC-7901 cells in a dose dependent manner.

Dr. Mo F, the lead author said, "Wuxing soup has an effective inhibition on cancer cells, and can induce SGC-7901 cells to apoptosis by calcium".

Taken together, carrot may be considered as a function food in ameliorated risk and used combination with conventional standard treatment for gastric cancer.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of gastric cancer will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti cancer possibilities.

Green Tea,The Popular Beverage Which Blocks The Entry Point of Bacterium That Cause Tuberculosis

Kyle J Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of tuberculosis (TB), some scientists suggested.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Commonly, the bacteriium attacked the lung tissue but in some cases they also can cause major damage to other parts of the body.

The disease is very contagious, as types of bacteria that cause TB can spread from person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air.

In other words, people can be infected by TB if they can to closely contact with TB patients through tuberculosis coughs, speaks, sneezes, spits,.... and laughs.

Bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis are the main culprits that cause TB. The disease is rare in the Western world, however, according to the report of WHO of the region including 36 countries in the Western Pacific Region, approximately 1.4 million notified cases of all forms of TB in 2011 (75 per 100 000 population), corresponding to 23% of the total cases notified globally.

There were 0.6 million new smear-positive cases notified in 2011 (32 per 100 000 population), corresponding to 22% of the total smear-positive cases notified globally.

Conventional medicine Isoniazid (INH) is quite effective and considered as the primary therapy for latent TB. Most patients are required to take an isoniazid antibiotic pill daily for 9 months.

It you are taking Isoniazid (INH) and experience nausea, vomiting, rash, fever, ataxia, slurring of speech, peripheral neuritis, dizziness and stupor within 30 minutes to two hours after ingestion, you should go to hospital right the way as in some cases, the symptoms may follow with complications of grand mal seizures and coma.

Please make sure you understand the risk which may be induced by the medicine.

Green tea, is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit and known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the investigation of the effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in risk of tuberculosis of a total of 200 newly diagnosed cases of AFB positive pulmonary tuberculosis, with 100 patients randomly received catechin (500 microg) with antitubercular treatment (ATT) (cases) and the other 100 received starch (500 microg) with ATT (control), researchers at the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University found that CTN treatment group exerts a significant activity in reduced levels of free radical expression through reduced oxidative stress in compared to control, observed by analysis of the blood samples.

Further analysis suggested that green tea CTN treatment group restores the balances antioxidant and free radicals ratio by stimulated production of levels of enzymatic antioxidant (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase) and non enzymatic antioxidant (total thiol, reduced glutathione) levels and significant decreased expression of free radicals (lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide).

These results re-constituted the efficacy of crude catechin extract as adjuvant therapy in management of oxidative stress seen in pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

Moreover, in monitor the extent of oxidative stress in mice infected with M tuberculosis and the role of crude green tea extract in repairing the oxidative damage by divided them into three groups of normal, infected-untreated and infected-treated with 9 members in each group, scientists indicated that infectous untreated group exerted a significant enhancement of antioxidants produced by the natural defense of the body such as erythrocytic catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities along with elevated levels of free radical defenders such as erythrocytic total thiols but decreased levels of antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione in erythrocytes and increased levels of free radicals plasma lipid peroxidation as compared to normal animals as expected.

These results suggested that non CTN tested mice exerted the protection against application of infectious agent selectively either through expression of natural antioxidant produced by the body or antioxidants produced by the body were inhibited by the injection substance.

Importantly, ingestion of green tea CTN upon 7 days in infectious mice group completely restored the normal values of antioxidants and ROS ratio observed by the oxidative stress parameters.

In other words, green tea treatment group showed an increased catalase, glutathione peroxidase, total thiol and decreased extent of lipid peroxidation with concomitant increase in the levels of SOD and glutathione in infected animals, thus reducing development of tuberculosis risk.

The above differentiation were supported by the Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology, Chandigarh in the study to determine whether or not polyphenols derived from green tea could down-regulate tryptophan-aspartate containing coat protein (TACO) gene transcription in reduced uptake/survival of M. tuberculosis within macrophages.

TACO gene transcription allows mycobacterial entry/survival within a mobile white blood cell, especially at sites of infection.of the innate immune system,

According to the reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and reporter assay technology, application of major component of green tea polyphenols, epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG reduced expression of TACO gene transcription within white blood cells in the immune system through its ability in inhibited Sp1 transcription factor in initiation of infectious cellular processes.

Sp1 transcription factor plays an important role in cell differentiation, cell growth, apoptosis, immune responses.
Dr. Anand PK, the lead authors, said, "The down-regulation of TACO gene expression by epigallocatechin-3-gallate was accompanied by inhibition of mycobacterium survival within macrophages as assessed through flow cytometry and colony counts" and "epigallocatechin-3-gallate may be of importance in the prevention of tuberculosis infection".

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols in attenuated risk and treatment of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis may contribute significantly to the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis in third world countries where the conventional medicine are scarce or un-affordable to general population.
