The Herb and Plant Inhibits Mucus Accumulation That Cause Acute and Chronic Cough, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reduced cough through its expectorant activity, some scientists suggested.

The results of the study were conducted by numbers of institutes, including the Kaunas University of Medicine and published on online literature
is a natural and infrequent reaction of body to clear the throat caused by excessive mucus or foreign irritants. The aim of these function are to make the airway free for air inhaling and expelling.

Acute coughing normally caused by hay fever and the common cold is healed itself within 3 weeks. Chronic coughing are a condition that last longer than 3 weeks.

As of today, researchers do not know the exact causes of chronic coughing. However, researchers suggested, the condition may be resutlted of postnasal drip, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),... and chronic bronchitis. And cigarette smoking is considered as a main culprit.

Long term use of an ACE inhibitor, a pharmaceutical drug used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure are also associated to the risk of a chronic cough.

Dr. Terasaki G, the lead author at the University of Washington, said, " Cough hypersensitivity syndrome is a new area of research and has been hypothesized to be the underlying factor in many cases of a chronic cough, regardless of the inciting factor" and " More clinical research is needed to further elucidate the cough reflex pathway and the factors involved in modulating its sensitivity, which may eventually lead to new antitussive therapeutics"(5).

Expectorant is a medicine with a function to promote the secretion of sputum of the air passages for treatment of coughs.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the comparison of the effect of some herbal agents in velocity of mucus secretion isolated from ciliated epithelium of the frog oesophagus, researchers found that application fo fructus foeniculi (fennel) exerts a stronger effect than  fructus anisi (anise). Herba plantaginis (plantain), flores verbasci (torch weed), and radix liquiritiae (liquorice) but lessers than the application of Folia farfarae (coltsfoot).

These protective effect in the further analysis was found to attribute to mucous layers in the hypopharynx and spasmolytic, secretolytic and bactericide effects found in fennel.

Furthermore, in the experiment to confirm the efficacy of some herbal medicine for treatment of throat clearing used since ancient times, researchers conducted a study to evaluate the bronchial mucus secretion stimulating and antispasmodic, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic and stimulating effect on the ciliated epithelium of two new formulations of throat clearing herbal tea.

The first formulation consists of liquorice roots, sweet fennel and thyme, and the second one consists of pine gemmae, thyme and elder flowers.

At the end of the experiment, researchers showed that both formulas exerted a significant activity against in inhibited mucus secretion in tested subjects without inducing intolerant adverse effects.

However, loss of the efficacy was found in use of formulas after 2 years of expiration, and the purity of the mixtures may also be decreased due to loss on drying, total ash, microbial contamination, contamination with radionuclides, heavy metals, pesticides and foreign matter.

These result suggested that although herbal medicine may be effective in exhibited mucus secretion for treatment of a cough, appliers should also be beware of the contamination caused by several aspects.

Moreover, in the investigation to a water extract of a mixture of eight herbs (chamomile, saffron, anise, fennel, caraway, licorice, cardomom and black seed) tested for its inhibitory effect on histamine released in initiated cough from rat peritoneal mast cells stimulated either by compound 48/80 or be IgE/anti-IgE, researchers at the Helwan University indicated that in compared to flavonoid quercetin, the extract demonstrated inhibited histamine released from chemically- and immunologically-induced cells by 81% and 85%, respectively.

Intake of the water extract of tested subjects also displayed a significantly and clinically expectorant expectancy in improvements of sleep discomfort, cough frequency and cough intensity.

The application also increased percentages of FEV1/FVC in patients suffering from allergic asthma in compared to placebo tea participants.

Where The FEV1/FVC ratio, also called Tiffeneau-Pinelli index, is a calculated ratio used in the diagnosis of obstructive and restrictive lung disease, according to Wikipedia

FEV1: Volume that has been exhaled at the end of the first second of a forced expiration

VC: Vital capacity: the volume of air breathed out after the deepest inhalation
RV/TLC%: Residual volume expressed as percent of TLC

FEFmax: The maximum instantaneous flow achieved during a FVC maneuver

VL: Actual volume of the lung including the volume of the conducting airway

FRC: Functional residual capacity: the volume in the lungs at the end-expiratory position

TLC: Total lung capacity: the volume in the lungs at maximal inflation, the sum of VC and RV

Taken together, fennel used alone or combination with other herbal medicine may be used to get rid of mucus, improve quality of life and treat asthma.

The Herbs That Protect Digestive Function Against Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, or acid reflux disease, is a chronic condition characterized by liquid stomach acid refluxing back up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

According to the study of "Updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease." by DeVault KR, Castell DO; American College of Gastroenterology, GERD is defined as symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus.

Most common symptoms are burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), chest pain, regurgitation of food or sour liquid and sensation of a lump in your throat.

In the severe case, people with GERD may experience symptoms of difficulty swallowing, lump in the throat asthma,... and chronic cough.

According to the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, GERD may also facilitate symptoms of chest pain, similar to those with noncardiac chest pain (NCCP)(5).

The causes of GERD are not fully understood. However, some researchers suggested that obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity, consumption of tobacco and alcohol, and respiratory diseases are associated with the prevalent risk of the diseases(6).

Properly manage diet such as two meals a day with an intake of only fluids in between, whenever the patient feels hungry or thirsty, is a useful dietary regimen for the management of GERD(7) and avoid foods and beverages that trigger GERD symptoms(8).

Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be effective but long-term application may cause severe side effects.

Types of food to prevent and treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
1. Peppermint
According to the study of the review of the bioactivity and potential health benefits of peppermint tea (Mentha piperita L.)." by McKay DL, Blumberg JB. posted in PubMed, in vitro, peppermint has significant antimicrobial and antiviral activities, strong antioxidant and antitumor actions, and some antiallergenic potential.

Animal model studies demonstrate a relaxation effect on gastrointestinal (GI) tissue, analgesic and anesthetic effects in the central and peripheral nervous system.

However, human studies of peppermint leaf are limited and clinical trials of peppermint tea are absent.

Adverse reactions to peppermint tea have not been reported, although caution has been urged for peppermint oil therapy in patients with GI reflux, hiatal hernia or kidney stones(1).

2. Ginger
Gingerol, is also known as gingerol, a phytochemical of Flavonoids (polyphenols) found in fresh ginger and in a variety of other plants.

Ginger has been used for thousands of years to enhance the function of digestive system and treat stomach distress including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and indigestion, acid reflux, motion sickness, dyspepsia, etc. due to its due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic properties.

According to the study of " Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and the gingerols inhibit the growth of Cag A+ strains of Helicobacter pylori", the methanol extract of ginger rhizome inhibited the growth of all 19 strains in vitro with a minimum inhibitory concentration range of 6.25-50 micrograms/ml.

One fraction of the crude extract, containing the gingerols, was active and inhibited the growth of all HP strains with a MIC range of 0.78 to 12.5 micrograms/ml and with significant activity against the CagA+ strains(2).

Other research of [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, [10]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol. and it effects in nausea and vomiting found that the efficiency of ginger in reducing nausea and vomiting may be based on a weak inhibitory effect of gingerols and shogaols at cholinergic M (3) receptors and serotonergic 5-HT (3) receptors.

Serotonergic 5-HT (4) receptors, which play a role in gastroduodenal motility, appear not to be involved in the action of these compound. (3)

3. Aloe Vera Juice
According to the study described in article of "Effect Of Orally Consumed Aloe Vera Juice On Gastrointestinal Function in Normal Humans",  by Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. (Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine) involved ten healthy subjects - five men (median age: 42; standard deviation: 14 years), and five women (median age: 32; standard deviation: 5 years), Aloe vera juice injection promoted proper gastrointestinal function through  regulating gastrointestinal pH and improved gastrointestinal motility, increased stool specific gravity, and reduced populations of certain fecal micro-organisms, including yeast(4).

4. Mastic Gum
According to the article of "Strategies to Protect Against Potential Bone-Destroying Effects"By Chris D. Meletis, ND, while much of the research on mastic gum revolves around its ability to support the health of patients with ulcers and the ability to inhibit the bacteria H. pylori,  has been equally useful in patients with GERD and acid reflux(4).

The Edible Button Mushroom Which Protects the Liver Against Hepatic Steatosis (Fatty Liver Diseases)

Kyle J. Norton

Hepatic steatosis is a medical condition characterized by fat accumulation accompanied by a progressive inflammation of the liver.

The disease is also known as fatty liver disease.

Depending on the risk factors that cause fatty liver,
 * Obesity, high blood cholesterol including high triglycerides, diabetes, and certain medications, including methotrexate (Trexall), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), amiodorone (Pacerone), and valproic acid (Depakote) are associated nonalcoholic fatty disease. And

* Alcohol fatty liver disease is associated with long-term excessive alcohol drinking.

Prolonged untreated hepatic steatosis is also a leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Hepatic steatosis symptoms may include poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, physical weakness fatigue. However, patients in the severe case may experience symptoms of jaundice of the skin and eyes confusion,.... and abnormal bleeding if hepatic steatosis develops to its advanced stage.

Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source.

The edible mushroom is a genus A. Muscaria and belongings to the family Amanitaceae and cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.

Chemical constituents of button mushroom include astraodorol, psilocybin, lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat.

However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood. The special particle called lipoprotein moves this waxy, soft substance from place to place.

In ovariectomized (OVX) mice (a model of postmenopausal women) induced hepatic steatosis by a high-fat diet supplemented with WBM powder, researchers found that(1)

* Dietary WBM intake in tested mice significantly lowers liver weight and hepatic injury markers.

* Treated mice also shows less fat accumulation in the livers, according to liver tissue analysis.

* More importantly, treatment mice exerts a significant improvement of glucose clearance ability.

Glucose clearance ability is correlated with measures of insulin sensitivity and acute insulin response to glucose, in compared to a normal range of hepatic extraction of 25.8% [32.7%], and extrahepatic insulin clearance of 20.7 mL/kg/min [11.7 mL/kg/min])(2).

Further analysis of microarray analysis also revealed that genes related to the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway, including the genes for fatty acid synthetase (Fas) and fatty acid elongase 6 (Elovl6), the enzymes which are responsible for lipogenesis (the metabolic formation of fat)(1) found to decrease in the liver of mushroom-fed mice.

Moreover, in a vitro mechanistic studies using the HepG2 cell line, scientists explained, the efficacy in reduced expression of FAS and ELOVL6 in liver fat formation was attributed to button mushroom property in inhibition of liver X receptor (LXR)(1) signaling in activated and promoted above genes.

Dr. Kanaya N, the lead author, after taking into account of other co and confounders said, "WBM is protective against hepatic steatosis and NAFLD in OVX mice as a model for postmenopausal women".

Taking all together, button mushroom may be considered as functional food in the protection of liver against the onset of hepatic steatosis, the early stage of fatty liver diseases.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food of button mushroom during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of anti-fatty liver possibilities.

Coffee, The Beverage Which Normalizes Levels of Sex Hormone Testosterone and Estrogen, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

A recent study suggested that coffee may have a direct effect in influence the production of the sex hormone estrogen and testosterone.

Sex hormones are a class of hormones, affecting sexual development or reproduction.

Steroid-binding globulin(SSBG), is a sex hormone, having a direct effect on androgen and estrogen, in compared to corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) binding glucocorticoids and progesterone.

According to the University of Western Ontario, in differentiation of steroid-binding globulin(SSBG) wrote, "The access of testosterone and estradiol to target tissues is regulated by sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) in human blood" and "Serum SHBG levels are low in patients with hyperandrogenism, especially in association with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and in individuals at risk for diabetes and heart disease".

Furthermore, Patients wit, idiopathic hirsutism, or ovarian failure are also associated with low levels of Steroid-binding globulin(SSBG), Dr. Hogeveen KN, the lead author said.
Moreover, reduced circulating testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in an aging population are also implicated as risk factors for metabolic syndrome, probably due to its relationship with insulin sensitivity.

Therefore, raising SHBG may be used as protective therapy against the development of metabolic syndrome in older men.

These results suggested regulated serum SHBG levels to normal levels not only have a strong effect in prevented disease associated to aging male but also reduce diseases associated to high levels of testosterone such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), in women.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In an 8-week parallel-arm randomized controlled trial with Healthy adults (n = 42) recruited from the Boston community, including regular coffee consumers, nonsmokers, and overweight, randomized to five 6-ounce cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated instant coffee or water per day, at 4 weeks, researchers surprisingly found that
* Decaffeinated coffee drinking was associated with a borderline significantly increased levels of SHBG in women, but not in men.

* At week 4, decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone and caffeinated coffee decreased only total testosterone in women.

* Contrasted to women participants, men consumption of caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol hormones.

* The study also indicated that caffeinated coffee consumption does not exert any effect on SHBG in either men or women.

But conflicted to the healthy young adult, coffee and coffee caffeine showed an elevated effect as a mediator of sex hormone-binding globulin in both androgen and estrogen in type 2 diabetic patients, particularly in women.

Additionally, according to the cross-sectional study of 2377 nondiabetic pre- and postmenopausal women from the E3N cohort study in a multivariate-adjusted model, intake of more than 3 cups of coffee daily coffee and caffeine ≥265 mg/day were associated with an increased SHBG level distribution (<46.3 nmol/L), in compared to no risk association of decaffeinated coffee subgroup.

Moreover, the prevention of low level of SHBG of both caffeinated coffee and caffeine may demonstrate a potential and positive effect in reduced risk of T2DM.

More importantly, in the examine a study during a median follow-up of 10 years of 359 postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes matched with 359 control subjects by age, race, duration of follow-up, and time of blood draw, coffee and caffeine were associated to increased levels of fee and total testosterone among postmenopausal women.

The findings suggested that coffee and caffeine has an extreme effect in the exhibition of the sex hormone estrogen and testosterone throughthe lower level of SHBG in menopause women and prevented onset of type 2 diabetes.

Decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone through significantly increased levels of SHBG in women. And caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol in men.

The Vegetable Juice Which Stops Leukemia Cells From Spreading, Researchers Found

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive impact in inhibited lymphoid leukemia cells from cell cycle division, some scientists suggested.

Leukemia is a medical condition characterized by the abnormal growth of the cells in the blood.

Lymphoid leukemia cells are the abnormal cell developed of cancerous cells from early (immature) forms of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in 2018 statistic report wrote, "Approximately every 3 minutes one person in the United States (US) is diagnosed with a blood cancer. ... New cases of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma are expected to account for 10 percent of the estimated 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed in the US in 2018".

The disease affects mostly people aged 55 and over, however, it is also the most common cancer in children under 15 years of age.

There is no single cause of abnormal blood cells that do not die but accumulate and proliferate.

Some researchers suggested that use artificial ionizing radiation, infected by human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1) and HIV, long-term contacted with benzene and some petrochemicals, medication used for the treatment of cancer, gene alternation and certain diseases such as Down syndrome are associated to increased risk of immature white blood cells development.

Frequent use of hair dyes and long-term and heavy smoking are also considered as preventable risk factors that cause leukemia.

Most common symptoms are pains in the bones or joints, swollen lymph nodes, fevers or night sweats,  bleeding and bruising easily, frequent infections, discomfort or swelling in the abdomen and general cancer symptoms of weight loss, loss of appetite, feeling weak or tired.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor immediately, you may be at the early stage of leukemia.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In a study conducted by the Sheffield Hallam University to exam the potential effects of  injection of carrot juice in treatment of the 3 three lymphoid leukaemia cell lines and to test the suggestion of traditional medicine regarded to the used of carrot for potential treatment for leukaemia by using carrot the bioactive compounds such as three polyacetylenes (falcarinol, falcarindiol, and falcarindiol-3-acetate) and two carotenoids (beta-carotene and lutein) isolated from carrot juice extract (CJE) researchers found that
* Application of carrot juice exerts a significant effect in the induction of cancer cell apoptosis observed by the Annexin V/PI and Caspase 3 activity assays.

* Injection of carrot contained polyacetylenes and carotenoids in leukemia cell lines with the fraction from carrot extracts was significantly more cytotoxic in compared to other fractions.

* Treatment with purified polyacetylenes isolated from carrot juice also induced apoptosis, but in a dose and time responsive manner.

*  Falcarinol and falcarindiol-3-acetate isolated from Daucus carota L induced a most significant cytotoxic activity in compared to falcarindiol.

Surprisingly, in contrast, the carotenoids, the major bioactive compound found abundantly in carrot demonstrated the insignificant effect on either apoptosis or cell proliferation in all tested cell line.

These result illustrated a strong message that the efficacy of carrot in the treatment of was attributed to chemical compound polyacetylenes rather than beta-carotene or lutein as hypothesized by some literature.

Further analysis also suggested that the cytotoxic effects of polyacetylenes were most efficacy in facilitated apoptosis and inhibited proliferation through the arrest of the cell cycle.

Additional investigation of carrot juice extract against expression of on myeloid and lymphoid leukemia cell lines in compared to normal hematopoietic stem cells also conducted by the same institute, suggested that treatment of carrot juice extracts for up to 72 hours in vitro display a strong effect in induction of cancer cells death observed by the annexin V/propidium iodide staining followed by flow cytometric analysis.

Furthermore, in compared to normal cell lines, injection also inhibited the progression of the cancer division through the cell cycle arrested observed by the cell cycle analysis and cell counts.

Interestingly, application of the extract exerted a higher inhibitory effect in lymphoid cell lines in compared to myeloid cell lines, without affecting the normal and healthy hematopoietic stem cells.

Finally, after taking into account of other co and confounders, Dr. said, "extracts from carrots can induce apoptosis and cause cell cycle arrest in leukemia cell lines. The findings suggest that carrots may be an excellent source of bioactive chemicals for the treatment of leukemia ".

The found evidence suggested that carrot juice and its bioactive compound polyacetylenes may be considered as functional foods for ameliorated risk, progression, and treatment of lymphoid leukemia.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot juice anti-leukemia possibilities.

How to Protect Your Inner Eye Pressure Against Early Onset of Glaucoma

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reduced ocular hypertension, the early onset of glaucoma, some scientists suggested.

The results of this investigation were conducted by numbers of respectable research centers, including Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Research and published on online medical literature.

Ocular hypertension is a condition characterized by elevated fluid pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), in most case, without inducing optic nerve damage or visual field loss.

Normal eye pressure is in ranges between 10-21 mm Hg. Eye pressure over 21mm Hg is considered as ocular hypertension.

People with ocular hypertension do not develop a peripheral vision and ocular disease. However, the condition may consider as a risk factor in the early onset of glaucoma.

Medication such as bisphosphonate, cyclosporine, tacrolimus,.... and minocycline used for treatment for osteoporosis, erectile dysfunction, and prostate conditions may increase pressure in the ocular.

The Glaucoma Research Foundation, patients with ocular hypertension may not experience any symptoms that affect the inner eye structure or vision abnormality, however untreated ocular hypertension may facilitate glaucoma, a multi-factorial, complex eye disease with specific characteristics such as optic nerve damage and visual field loss.

According to statistic, approximately, 3-6 million people in the United States have intraocular pressures of 21 mm Hg or higher, affecting 4%-10% of the population older than 40 years with no signs of glaucomatous damage.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb or foot has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the evaluation of the effect of aqueous extract isolated from Foeniculum vulgare in experimental models of glaucoma, researchers at the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Research found that application of aqueous seed extract of Foeniculum vulgare exerted significant activities in reduced the intraocular pressure of tested model by 17.49, 21.16 and 22.03%.

In normotensive rabbits, application of the same doses induced an insignificant change of fluid pressure.

These result suggested that aqueous extract isolated from Foeniculum vulgare demonstrated an oculohypotensive activity only on infectious subjects without causing harm to normal eye pressure.

Aqueous extract of Foeniculum vulgare possesses significant oculohypotensive activity similar to those of timolol, a conventional medicine used as an eye drop to treat increased pressure inside the eye such as in ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

Further analysis, researchers also suggested that at a dose of 0.6%, the extract may have potential to treat acute and chronic models of glaucoma.

After taking into account  co and confounders, Dr. Agarwal R, the lead scientist also found, "A maximum mean difference of 31.20% was observed between vehicle-treated and extract treated eyes in water loading model while a maximum mean IOP lowering of 31.29% was observed in steroid-induced model of glaucoma".

Although, aqueous extract isolated from Foeniculum vulgare demonstrated a strong efficacy against the oculohypotensive activity, scientists participated in the study were still worry about the existence of possible toxicity.

The study reconfirmed the use of Fennel seeds to benefit vision in traditional herbal medicine and the Romans viewed the fennel plant as the herb of eyesight.

However, due to the limitation of information findings, patients with hyper intraocular pressure should consult with related field specialists before applying fennel extract.

Moreover, intake of fennel extract should be taken extreme care, as overdoses may induce to prevent liver toxicity and damage to eyesight

Strawberry, The Delicious Fruit Gobbles Up Plaques That Cause Atherosclerosis

Kyle J. Norton(Scholar, Master of Nutrition), all right reserved.

Intake of strawberry daily may have a potential and therapeutic effect in reduced risk and treatment of atherosclerosis, some scientists suggested.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques gradually building up on the wall of arteries.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Long-term accumulated of plaques in the arteries can cause hardening of the arterial wall, narrow the artery that has a negative impact in blocking the function of an artery in transport nutrients and oxygen to the body needs.

Patients with atherosclerosis are most likely have precondition of high blood cholesterol. According to the American Heart Foundation, atherosclerosis developed is totally depending on where plaque develops, type of artery affected.

In other words, depending on where the plaques deposited in the arteries, patients may develop coronary heart disease, angina (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart muscle)
carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease,........ and chronic kidney disease.

There is no single cause of atherosclerosis. Some researchers suggested that a set of medical conditions such as high blood pressure, long-term cadmium accumulation caused by cigarette smoking, high blood cholesterol,... and calcium caused by oversecretion of hormone in response to parathyroid glands signaling.

Truly, atherosclerosis usually doesn’t cause symptoms in the early stage of onset.
However,  as aging progress and narrowing in the artery becomes severe, blood flow may be blocked off, leading to rupture and blood clot.

According to the Heart Foundation in the UK, approximately, 2.6 million people in the UK have narrowing of the arteries around the heart, which can lead to a heart attack, angina,

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongings to the family Roseaceae. The plants have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin

In the study of 36 subjects with T2D (23 females; mean body mass index 27.90 ± 3.7; mean age 51.57 ± 10 years) were randomly divided into two groups
* The treatment group consumed 2 cups of FDS beverage (50 g of FDS is equivalent to 500 g of fresh strawberries)

* The control group consumed macronutrient matched placebo powder with strawberry flavor in a randomized double-blind controlled trial.

* Both groups consumed the designed supplement daily for 6 weeks

At the end of the experiment, researchers found that FDS supplementation significantly decreased C-reactive protein levels and lipid peroxidation in the form of malondialdehyde (MDA).

In other words, FDS inhibited production of inflammatory cytokines caused by overexpression of free radical in stimulated cholesterol building up in the arteries through oxidation.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is biomarker of lipid peroxidation and C-reactive protein levels is a biomarker of inflammation.

Furthermore, application of FGS also reduced expression of HbA1c (-5.7%, p h< 0.05) andsignificantlyt increased total antioxidant status in compared to placebo.

These results suggested that FGS also has a strong effect in reduced three-month average plasma glucose concentration and improved antioxidant status, the indications of decreased risk of devastating complications, including atherosclerosis.

Dr.Moazen S, the lead author after taking into account of co and con fouders, said, "FDS improved glycemic control and antioxidant status, and reduced lipid peroxidation and inflammatory response in patients with T2D. Supplementation with freeze-dried berry products, as natural sources of antioxidants with low glycemic index".

Moreover, the study of 27 subjects with metabolic syndrome (2 males and 25 females; body mass index, 37.5 +/- 2.15 kg/m(2); age, 47.0 +/- 3.0 years [means +/- SE]) with treatment group consumed 4 cups of freeze-dried strawberry beverage (50 g freeze-dried strawberries approximately 3 cups fresh strawberries) and control group consumed equivalent amounts of fluids (controls, 4 cups of water) daily for 8 weeks conducted by the Oklahoma State University suggested that strawberry supplementation significantly decrease total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in compared to control group.

Additionally, the treatment group also decreased circulating levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, a biohumoral correlate of atherosclerosis in compared to controls at 8 weeks.

The findings provide a strong evidence that whole food strawberry in frozen form processes an anti cholesterol and atherosclerosis activity.

Dr, Basu A, the lead scientist at the final report of the study wrote, "short-term freeze-dried strawberry supplementation improved selected atherosclerotic risk factors, including dyslipidemia and circulating adhesion molecules in subjects with metabolic syndrome".

More importantly, the Basu A1 and Lyons TJ. study of berries implication on metabolic syndrome indicated that strawberry not only supports therapeutic roles  in metabolic syndrome, a prediabetic state characterized by several cardiovascular risk factors but also lower total and LDL-cholesterol and surrogate biomarkers malondialdehyde and adhesion molecules of atherosclerosis.

Taken together, strawberry may be considered as a function food in prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis through decreasing levels of blood cholesterol.

People with a higher risk of atherosclerosis may want to add a portion of fresh strawberry into their diet for preventive measure.
