Food Therapy: Carrots In Attenuated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Lung Cancer

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of lung cancer, some scientists suggested.

Lung cancer is a condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in lung tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may infect other healthy tissue and organ a distance away from the original site.

In the evaluation of a total of 417 lung cancer cases and 849 controls of a hospital-based case control with 'cases' of lung cancer patients diagnosed during the period 1979/80 at seven hospitals in the Lombardy region by interviewed on their life-long tobacco usage and their current intake of four food items rich in retinol or carotene, researcher found that risk of lung cancer increased 3-4 fold in current smokers who did not consume carrots in compared compared with those who ate them more than once a week.

The odd ratio of carrot consumption reduced significantly and linearly to risk of lung cancer.
However, among ex-smokers or non-smokers, intake of carrot did not offer a decrease of lung cancer risk.

Dr. Pisani P the lead author, after taking into account of other cofounder such as vegetables said, "The effect of carrots is independent of histological type of lung cancer while the effect of green vegetables was confined to epidermoid carcinomas".

Further analysis of the antiproliferative effect of retinoic acid amide found abundantly in carrot suggested that retinoic acid amide at dose of 30 μM expressed a significant activity in inhibition of lung cancer cell lines and clonogenic growth.

Application of  retinoic acid amide also induced cancer cell apoptosis in the G2/M-phase cell cycle arrest through inhibition of JAK2 in cancer cell line in signaling cell functions by transmitting messages between cells in initiated growth and proliferation; inhibited STAT3, and STAT5 in cancer cell in expression of inflammatory cytokine to fuel the cancer development and expansion and level of p21WAF1, a key mediator of p53-dependent in cell cycle arrest with function as a tumor suppressor in cancer

At the mean time, application of retinoic acid amide stimulated the decreased cyclin A, cyclin B1 in induction of cell mitosis, and Bcl-XL in expression of anti-apoptotic activity in lung cancer cell line by preventing the release of mitochondrial contents such as cytochrome c.

Additionally, researchers also discovered that the compound injection also increases the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 in tumors with function of responsible for executing cell death following cytochrome c release.

In compared to those of conventional medicine, Dr. Li HX, the lead author siad, "retinoic acid amide exhibits promising antiproliferative effects against human lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo and enhances the antiproliferative effect of methotrexate".

The above differentiation were supported by the reviewing the 16 studies selected for elevation between lung cancer and vitamin A in humans, conducted by Dr. Palgi A.

According to the study, high intake of dietary vitamin A has a protective effect against the development of squamous and small cell carcinoma of the lung in smokers and people who consumed carrot daily have a lower risk of lung cancer in compared to non consumers.

The result findings strongly suggested that long term intake of carrot in moderate amounts may have a substantial implication in prevention and treatment of lung cancer. But Intake of carrot supplement should be taken with care to prevent acute liver toxicity.

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of osteoporopsis, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant ofthe species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the investigation of the herbal selective estrogen receptor modulators or SERMs effect in risk of osteoporosis, in comparison of plant aqueous extracts derived from Greek flora (Sideritis euboea, Sideritis clandestina, Marticaria chamomilla, and Pimpinella anisum), researchers at the Medical School, University of Athens found that all extracts exert profound activities in stimulated the differentiation and mineralization of osteoblastic cell culture.

Further analysis, also discovered that all plant extracts at concentration range 10-100 microg/mL, including Anise induced  osteoblastic cell differentiation in formation of bone and improved bone density.

These result indicated that Anise and other plant extracts may comprise a substantial anti estrogenic effect in reduced risk of osteoporosis in dose dependent manner.

Also, in the evaluation of (E)-anethole, major bioactive compound isolated from Anise  protective effect on H2O2-induced alterations in collagen metabolism, researchers showed that application of anethole of 0.5 µM  for 1 h completely prevent the alternation of cells treated with 300 µM H2O2 in displayed a decrease in collagen biosynthesis of 54 %, correlated with alterations of type I collagen mRNA expression in the osteoblasts in initiated higher bone turn over.

Additionally differentiation also revealed that Anise anethole administration at 10 µM, exerts most efficient suppression in ameliorated expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 caused by H2O2 induced alterations in collagen metabolism, in contributed to the 8 % decrease in the amount of collagen secreted into the medium.

In Other words, anethole isolated from Anise attenuated ROS causes an increased activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in degraded collagen in fibroblasts.
Some researchers suggested, "the loss of MMP-9 improved the connectivity density of the trabeculae, whereas the loss of MMP-2 reduced this parameter. Similar differential effects in architecture were observed in the L5 vertebra, but bone volume fraction was lower for both MMP-2 and MMP-9 (in mice study) "

Taken together, Anise and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk and treatment of osteoporosis caused by collagen loss in skin and bone. However, intake of Anise supplement should be taken with extreme care in prevented toxicity.

Food Therapy: Fennel In Ameliorated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Breast Cancer

Fennel may have a potential and therapeutic effect in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the breast tissue. At the later stage, cancerous cells may travel  a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

In the evaluation of the essential oil extracted from fennel activity in human breast cancer cell line (MDA-Mb), researchers found that application of fennel extract exerted a significant effect in inhibition of the expression of cancer cell line at dose of lower than f lower than 10 μg/mL with IC50.

According to the University of Malaya in investigation of  the DNA protecting activity and inhibition of nicotine-induced cancer cell migration of 9 spices, fennel exerted a potential effect in protection of the DNA integrity and inhibition of nicotine-induced cancer cell migration against Murine fibroblasts (3T3-L1) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells pre-treated with spice extracts and then exposed to H₂O₂ and nicotine.

Additional analysis suggested that the result of inhibition was attributed to fennel antioxidants of phenols and flavonoids in ameliorated H2O2 in initiated chain activity in induction of cytotoxicity in altered DNA of the experiment cell line.

Some researchers suggested that overproduction of hydrogen peroxide may serve as a prodrug in the presence of transition metal ions, in induced production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals to initiated DNA damage in precipitated apoptosis.

In other words, application of highly oxidative hydrogen peroxide in breast caner cell line may cause a significant cytotoxic effect in the cancer cell death.

These results demonstrated the correlation of increase of apoptosis with the rise in generation of reactive oxygen species in cancer cells.

Due to this potential activity, some researchers suggested that hydrogen peroxide overproduced in tumor cells can serve as a prodrug for the treatment of cancer.

On the other hand, application of H2O2 in healthy cell may induce DNA damage in initiation of cancer cell development.

Furthermore, fennel scored a statistically significant DNA protecting activity in compared to other spices, such as at ginger with 50 μg/ml in reduced 68% of DNA damage in 3T3-L1 cells.

However, Fennel exerted a lesser effect in inhibited cancer MCF-7 cells with nicotine induced cell migration in compared to other spices such as pepper, long pepper and ginger.

The above differentiation were supported by the joint study lead by the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, in evaluation of the antioxidant effect of essential oil of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma).

According to the result from Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, fennel displayed a moderated antioxidant in precipitated cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) with IC50 values between 30-210 mg L-1 in compared to cytotoxic reference compounds.

In fact, the efficacy of fennel essential oil in inhibited the breast caner proliferation and migration was attributed to the presence of lipophilic secondary metabolites and anise aldehyde, which have a potential in elevated the interference with molecular targets in cells by fennel antioxidant compounds such as anethole.  

Taken together, fennel and its bioactive compound may be considered as a function foods in reduced risk, progression and treatment of breast cancer. However, intake of fennel supplement should be taken with extreme care in prevented liver acute toxicity.

In the study to verify the effect of carrots in risk of prostate cancer by reviewing publication of literature in August 2013 of PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane register, and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases, and the references of the retrieved articles, researchers at the Zhejiang University found that intake of carrot demonstrated a significantly reduced risk of prostate cancer with the odd ratio of .82 in compared to non serving group.

Dr. Xu X, the lead author suggested that intake of carrot frequently with limit volume may have a profound effect in reduced prostate cancer risk.

Further analysis of the potential effect of lycopene extract found abundantly in tomato and carrot in decreased risk of onset and treatment of prostate cancer indicated that lycopene inhibited prostate cancer proliferation through modulated the expression of PI3K/Akt pathway prostate cancer cell lines  in regulating cancerous cellular functions including metabolism, growth, proliferation.

Dysfunction of the PI3K/Akt pathway was associated to a number of human diseases including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurological diseases.

Moreover, application of lycopene also displayed a strong effect in inhibited the proliferation of androgen-dependent prostateLNCaP cancer cells through the activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) with function to act as a tumor suppressor in prostate cells due to it activity in induction of  agonist ligands in inhibited growth of prostate cancer cells.

Additionally, the phytochemical also expressed a significant activity in exhibited the liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) in reduce proliferation of human oral cancer cells by promoting cell cycle arrest through increased expression of the cyclindependent kinase inhibitor p27, a tumor suppressor and promoted function of extracellular ATP-binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCA1) pathway in inhibited tumor growth through modulation of macrophage function within the tumor, and in established a link between cholesterol homeostasis and cancer.

Application of lycopene (10 μM) in the presence of a specific antagonist of PPARγ (GW9662) or LXRα (GGPP) exerted a huge effect in reduced liver X receptor α knockdown in induction of resistance against LXRα  in promoted the proliferation of DU145 cells.

Interestingly, lycopene in combination with the LXRα agonist T0901317, a potent chemical compound used in assays, exhibited anti prostate cell proliferative activity through interaction with protein expression of PPARγ, LXRα and ABCA1 in initiated cancer cell apoptosis.

In conclusion, Dr. Yang CM, the lead authors said, "These results demonstrate that lycopene can inhibit DU145 cell proliferation via PPARγ-LXRα-ABCA1 pathway and that lycopene and T0901317 exhibit synergistic effects".

The result findings strongly suggested that long term intake of carrot in moderate amounts may have substantial implication in prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. But Intake of carrot supplement should be taken with care to prevent acute liver toxicity.

Yoga may be considered as an integrated form of exercise in enhanced pregnancy, some scientists suggested

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

Pregnancy (gestation) is the period of time, from conception to delivery in which one or more offspring develop inside the mother's womb.
In Women
According to the West Medford, in women with infertility, yoga therapy not only exhibited a strong effect in clarity of the mind, maintain healthy body chemistry, but also provided patients the patience to undergo the rigors of infertility treatments.

Continuously, once patients feel better about themselves after attaining physical relaxation, yoga therapy can lead patient to treat their body with more respect, inducing healthier lifestyle habits as well as increased sensitivity regarding symptoms and body processes.

The Science of Tea: Green Tea in Risk and Treatment of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)

Green tea, a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit and known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world, may have a therapeutic and profound effect in ameliorated risk and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), some scientists suggested.

1. Arthritis
Arthritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of one or more of your joints,  leading to joint pain and stiffness.

Arthritis is the common autoimmune disorder affected over 50 millions world wide, according to the statistic.

According to the College of Pharmacy, green tea epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in preclinical studies displayed a significant effect in treatment of arthritic disease(41).

According to the study, the inhibition of IL-1β by EGCG in human chondrocytes was also associated with its inhibitory effects on the activation of nuclear translocation of NF-κB(2) in expression of proinflammatory activity.

Injection of green EGCG also inhibited the T helper (Th) cell subsets IL-22(5) in secreted cytokines in stimulated immune the defense against certain microbes and the development and maintenance of chronic inflammatory diseases and IL-23(5) in enhanced the expansion of T helper type 17 (Th17)(5) cells which have been found to associate to prevalence of many of the inflammatory autoimmune responses, including psoriasis.

Green tea also reduced infiltrations of T cells in facilitate inflammatory skin lesions caused by injection of imiquimod (IMQ).

At the end of experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; increased trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft(10); decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft; and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity(10).

These results indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreased cortical and trabecular bone loss and increased both bone density by stimulated over expression of bone formation and reduced bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.

3. Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalizing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio(22), abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate in induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibited levels of p53(22) with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.

7. Fibromyalgia (FM) 
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain, affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in US alone.

7.1. Fibromyalgia Caused by Oxidative Stress 
According to the study in review of literature of the frequency and pattern of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) of 289(95%) patients who completed the survey (263 women and 26 men) between February 2003 and July 2003, green tea was recommended at 24% for treatment of fibromyalgia (FM)(24).

In other words, in herbal medicine, green tea is considered to have certain effect in reduced symptoms and treatment of such syndrome.

Some evidences in medical literature suggested that over production of ROS in induction of oxidative stress(25) may have a strong implication in the pathophysiology of FM.

In the investigation of the effect of green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in protection of oxidative stress to cardiac cells cultured in the conditions of control, 400 μM H2O2 exposure for 30 min with and/or without 10 to 20 μM EGCG pre-treatment, researchers at the National Tsing Hua University found that treatment of green tea in H(2)O(2) group demonstrated a significant reduction of levels of reactive oxygen species through its antioxidant and its ability(25) in induced production of natural antioxidant presented in the cardiac cells in compared to over expression of ROS in H2O2 treatment group without injection of EGCG.

Also, application of green tea reduced levels of cytosolic Ca2+ overload in the H(2)O(2) group in induced oxidative stress(25) through improved antioxidant protein.

7.2. Fibromyalgia Caused by Sleep Disturbance

7.4. Fibromyalgia Caused by Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) Deficiency
Serum of alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) impregnated in most body tissues circulates in our body in high concentrations with function as a broad anti-inflammatory spectrum in inhibition of enzymes of inflammatory cells, especially neutrophil elastase.

The above differentiations were supported by the review of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases and Green Tea Polyphenol, by Dr. Helieh S. Oz at the University of Kentucky Medical Center(33).

According to the authors, green tea polyphenols are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways in activated inflammatory responses by attenuated nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB IKK, NF-κB933) in facilitated innate- and adaptive-immune responses, cell death and inflammation and cytokines like TNFα(33), inflammatory markers and cyclooxygenase-2(33) in elevated symptoms of inflammation and pain.

Dr. Helieh S. in summary said, "green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways" and "these comprise transcription nuclear factor-kappa B mediated I kappa B kinase complex pathways, programmed cell death pathways like caspases and B-cell lymphoma-2 (through regulating the cytochrome c release from the mitochondria) and intervention with the surge of inflammatory markers like cytokines and production of cyclooxygenase-2"(33).


8. Gout
Gout is a condition of recurrently inflammatory arthritis characterized by a red, tender, hot, and swollen joint caused by over expression of purine in the body.

According to the study, green tea and its bioactive compoud Epigallo catechin-O-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a putative curative drug for various diseases of gout, through its properties in reduced vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2)(34)(35) in response to vascular endothelial growth factor signal (VGFG)(35) for formation of gout through expression of levels of uric acid.

The study also emphasized that green tea with high levels of antioxidant and function in stimulated production of natural antioxidant in the body may also be used to reduce symptoms of recurrently inflammatory arthritis and inflammatory arthritis(37) such as gout, through inhibiting the oxidative stress in induced production of inflammatory cytokines to facilitate symptoms of inflammation(37).

The above differentiation were supported by the study of the effect of EGCG on monosodium urate monohydrate (MSU)-induced inflammation and cryopyrin (NLRP3 inflammasome)(36) activation in C57BL/6 mice received subcutaneous injection or oral gavage of EGCG before the intraperitoneal injection of MSU.

9. Tendinitis
Tendinitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of a tendon as a result of overuse, infection or rheumatic disease.

According to the study of the effect of GT and/or glycine in the diet on tendinitis on Wistar rats, randomly divided into seven groups (G): control group (C); G1 and G4, tendinitis; G2 and G5, tendinitis supplied with GT; and G3 and G6, tendinitis supplied with GT and a glycine diet for 7 or 21 days, respectively, group with tendinitis treated with green tea demonstrated a significant effect in enhanced collagen stablility(40) through expression of hydroxyproline in compared to other groups.

GT and glycine alone treated groups showed an increased activity of metalloproteinase-2 MMP-2 levels(40) which has been associated to the healing process of the fibrous connective tissue in tendinitis patients.

In compared to control and non GT treatment groups, application of green tea or GT+ gyycine group displayed a statistical significance in the decreased muscle retardation(40).

After taking into account of other co founders, Dr. Vieira CP, the lead author said, " GT + a glycine diet has beneficial effects that aid in the recovery process of the tendon after tendinitis".

After considering of all cofounders, researchers and colleagues at the Anat Rec said, " each region of the inflamed tendon can exhibit different responses during the treatment and therefore, modify its extracellular matrix components to facilitate recovery and repair".

Summary
