Food Therapy: Lentils(Pulses) in Ameliorated Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Lentils may have a substantial and positive effect in reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Lentil, a type of pulse of tiny legume that can be cooked quickly and rich in protein and fiber is a bushy annual plant of genus Lens the Fabaceaefamily, native to Middle East.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of disorders caused by heart dysfunction and abnormal blood vessels.

According to statistic from World Health Organization, approximately,17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015, representing 31% of all deaths.

The evaluation of lectin activity in CVD reduction was found to facilitate various mechanisms through numbers of expression.

According to a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effect of dietary pulse (beans, chickpeas, lentils and peas) intake on established therapeutic lipid targets for cardiovascular risk reduction, by reviewing literature published through Feb. 5, 2014, included RCTs of at least 3 weeks' duration that compared a diet emphasizing dietary pulse intake with an isocaloric diet, 26 studies met the criteria and guideline showed that a median dose of 130 g/d (about 1 serving daily) decreased significantly LDL cholelsesterol levels in compared to the control diets, without affecting the apolipoprotein B and non-HDL cholesterol levels.

Abnormal high levels of LDL cholelsesterol level is considered as one of major risk factor marker in the development of cardiovascular disease.

Further evaluation of the effect of dietary pulse fiber's low density lipoprotein implication of risk of CVD, indicated that antioxidant compound of bioactive polyphenolics inhibits the reactive oxygen species in induction oxidative stress in stimulated cholesterol accumulated in the large blood vessels in increased risk of heart disease through lipid per-oxidation.

Interestingly, the testing of low-GLoad foods effect in metabolic syndrome occurrence with 131 male Nile rats aged 3 weeks to 15 months randomly assigned to 15 dietary exposures of varied Glycemic Index indicated that lentil diets with low GLoads (102, 202) displayed a significant effect in reduced onset and treatment of metabolic syndrome in compared to other food with higher glycemic index.

More specifically, the benefit from lentils in reduced risk of metabolic syndrome exceeded dietary factors of combination of macronutrient composition + total fiber or dietary caloric density in the legume.

Additionally, the experiment also found that lentil diet even reverse the progression of metabolic syndrome in the tested Nile rats.

Metabolic syndrome is a set of conditions of increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels which are considered as risk factors of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Havemeier S, the lead author in the differentiation of Dietary guidance for pulses: the challenge and opportunity to be part of both the vegetable and protein food groups, said, "The last two revisions of the Dietary Guidelines saw the transformation from the MyPyramid "meat and beans group" to the MyPlate "protein foods group," a nutrient name rather than a food source". and "The 2015 Dietary Guidelines also came with a new area: sustainable diets. Encouraging the consumption of sustainable food sources, like pulses, is imperative to ensuring a secure, healthy food supply for the U.S. population over time and for future generations".

Moreover, the study to explore the association of legume intake (beans, chickpeas, lentils and so on), as part of a low-glycemic index diet, with the risk of cardiovascular events in the Iranian middle- and old-aged people contacted every 2 years for possible occurrence of CVD events in 7 years of follow-up, after considering other con founders showed that in compared to intake of legumes in different tertiles, risk of CVD was lower by 34% in tested subject of old-aged people, according to the returned food frequency questionnaire.

However,  frequency of consuming legumes exerted less significant effect in CVD events in the middle-aged people.

The findings suggested that intake of lentils frequently may have a potential effect in reduced risk of  cardiovascular disease.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga, An Integrated Form of Exercise in Treatment of Behavioral Addiction

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that yoga as an integrated form of exercise may be used for treatment of behavioral addiction.

Yoga, the ancient practical technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the joint study lead by the University of Florida, yoga may be considered as an adjunct treatment in behavioral addiction through induce "dopamine homeostasis", or in simpler terms "normalcy".

Prevention of addictive diseases is a complex and systematic strategies including training of social skills, decision in-making skills, family intervention, etc. particularly, in making the treatment more effective.

Combination of physical exercise and yoga may be useful components of comprehensive programs, especially in treatment of patients in substance dependent patients and pathological gambles.

Yoga and other forms of treatment may regulate the resting state functional connectivity (rsfMRI), a method of functional brain imaging, used to evaluate regional interactions and restore this impaired cross talk between various brain regions (e.g. Nucleus accumbens, cingulate gyrus, hippocampus etc.)

Truly, physical exercise, a planned, organized, and repeated body movement and yoga practice not only promoted physical fitness but also alleviated the stress and anxiety in induction of impulsive behavior, thus relieving craving behavior, suppressing abstinence symptoms, through ameliorating hormone production in response to stress and activated implusive behavior, such as hormone cortisol, dopamine, ghrelin,....

Moreover, intensities of exercise study showed a two- to three fold longer time to the next cigarette,  reduced substantially cravings withdrawal symptoms and decreased heart rate reserve (HRR) (lasting 30-40 minutes) from 60-85% to as low as 24% HRR (lasting 15 minutes).

Dr. Taylor AH, the lead author in the study of "The acute effects of exercise on cigarette cravings, withdrawal symptoms, affect and smoking behaviour: a systematic review", said, "withdrawal symptoms and negative affect decreased rapidly during exercise and remained reduced for up to 50 minutes after exercise. Effect sizes for seven studies that assessed "strength of desire to smoke" showed a mean reduction, 10 minutes after exercise, of 1.1".

Some researchers also suggested that yoga intervention directly and indirectly drive the attention and energy to the root of suffering by restoring the balances of the mind and body, bringing back the presence and dealing how to control impulsive behaviors in positive way through breathing and body control.

Indeed, in compared to yoga intervention, competitive professional sport rather increased the number of risk factors for substance-related problems.

More interestingly, in the study of 17 clients from the Problem Gambling Institute of Ontario at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (88% male) to evaluate the feasibility of teaching problem gamblers about mindfulness meditation as part of regular treatment for problem gambling by 8-week mindfulness group program, researchers found that in the comparison of the first group session and after the final group session, yoga mindfulness increase the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) scores from a pre-test score of 3.65 (SD = 1.01) to a post-test score of 4.40 (SD = 0.78) and
participants also highlighted a number of improvements being more in control, relaxed and able to stay in the now.

In fact, yoga mindfulness participated demonstrated a high levels of positive instinctive or intuitive feeling with improvement of the ability to control emotion and acted, according to the values while experiencing negative emotions, by adapting to the change of environment.

Additionally, yoga attendees also expressed to gain a management skill in controlled poor emotion regulation which may lead to impulse behavior.

Participants with difficulty in appropriate management of emotions were found to associate with a variety of psychiatric illnesses, including depression and anxiety

Further analysis of yoga mindfulness effectiveness, researchers opinionated, "the suitability of mindfulness as an intervention as part of a problem gambling treatment service. However, the study did not evaluate whether mindfulness improved the clients’ ability to resist relapse".

Taking altogether, yoga may be considered as a secondary and integrated form of treatment used combined with standard therapy in treatment of behavioral addiction.

Food Therapy: The Hetapoprotective Activities of Eggplant and its Bioactive Total Phenolics and Flavonoids

Eggplant, bioactive phytochemicals were found to process hetapoprotective activity against formation of liver diseases, some scientists suggested.

Eggplant with deeply purple color, is a species of S. melongena, belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to India.

Liver diseases are groups of liver disorders, including cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver. inflammation (hepatitis) from infectious (hepatitis B, hepatitis C) or non-infectious causes (chemical or autoimmune hepatitis) tumors and liver cancer.

According to statistic, among population of aged 45–64 years, the death rates of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis in the United States increased by 31% (from 20.1 per 100,000 to 26.4) from 2000 to 2015.

Eggplant, bioactive total phenolic and flavonoid content in reduced risk and treatment of liver diseases were found to associate to numbers of implication through various mechanisms.

According to the evaluation of 25 male Wistar rats randomly divided into five groups, and adapted for 7 days before the experimental study, including negative and positive groups fed with aquadest, Group III−V given Solanum melongena fruit infusion containing 1.125 grams, 2.25 grams and 4.5 grams orally for 9 days, respectively, suggested that at day 11 after the 9th day injection of  8 mL/kgBW of 10% CCl4 in paraffin carried out to all rats, except for the negative group,
treatment of Solanum melongena fruit infusion groups display a significant improvement of reduced hepatocyte necrosis in compared to positive group.

Surprisingly, under the observation of Mann-Whitney test, Solanum melongena fruit infusion did not express a linear dependent to the doses injection through the comparison to the effect in negative group, group III, and group V (p<0.05), as well as insignificant difference was found between the positive group and group IV (p>0.05).

Liver examination also suggested that liver cells death were found more common in the positive group of 37.26% in compared to negative group with the fewest necrotic hepatocyte of 1.27%.

In reactive oxygen species perspective, application of CCl4 stimulated by cytochrome p450 with function involved toxic substances metabolism to initiate forming of free radicals trichloromethyl radical (CCl3 -) in binding with lipid to induce lipid peroxidation in facilitated liver tissue damage.

Moreover, in reaction with oxygen in the liver tissue, CCl4 also precipitated the production of trichloromethylperoxy radical (CCl3 O2 -) to cause necrotic hepatocyte in the periportal space of the liver.

Additional analysis also discovered that Solanum melongena fruit infusion demonstrated a significant antioxidant activities in decreased and prevented the formation of free radical oxidation, through the expression of flavonoids in inhibition of CCl3 in reaction with oxygen to induce covalent bonds with fat.

After taking into account of other con founders, Dr. Nabhan Komara. the lead author said, "Solanum melongena fruit infusion has hepatoprotective effects against acute hepatitis in rat model histopathologically".

Interestingly, in the evaluated total phenolic and flavonoid antioxidant activity and hepatoprotection against cytotoxicity of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) in human hepatoma cell lines HepG2, scientists showed that pretreatment of HepG2 cells with 50 and 100 μg/mL of chemical compounds significantly increased expressions of t-BuOOH-exposed HepG2 cells  to induced tumor cell apoptosis by 14.49 ± 1.14% to 44.95 ± 2.72%. without harming to the nearby healthy cells.

According to the experiment, application of total phenolic and flavonoid not only increased antioxidant activities in protect liver cell against damage caused by over facilitation of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) in induction of ROS but also exhibited free radical cytotoxic effect to initiated cell death in HepG2 cell lines. 

Further more, the hepatoprotective activities on t-BuOOH-induced toxicity was attributed to total phenolic/flavonoid content at both 50 and 100 lg/mL and antioxidant activities at both 50 lg/mL and 100 lg/mL observed by two most common radical scavenging assays, namely, 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical.

Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH) is an organic compound used widely as a peroxide in a variety of oxidation processes.

Taken together, there is no doubt that eggplant and its btoactive total phenolic and flavonoid may have therapeutic effect in protected liver against infectious and non infectious agents and irregular growth causes of benign and malignant cancers through over expression of antioxidant activities in protected healthy cells and induction of ROS cytotoxicity to tumor cells.

Food Therapy: Green Tea Bioactive Polyphenols in Inhibited β-amyloid Accumulation in Neuro Degeneration

Green tea may have a potential and therapeutic effect in protected neurons of the brain against deposit of β-amyloid in initiated neuro degenerative diseases, some researchers postulated.

β-amyloid are plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer patients derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) with function in binding to other proteins on the surface of cells.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

The differentiation of green tea activities in risk of plagues deposit in certain parts of the brain to induce development and neuropathogenesis of dementia was found to associate to numbers of implication through several mechanisms.

Additionally, the examine the inhibitory effect of l-theanine, a component of green tea (Camellia sinensis), on Abeta(1-42) with oral treatment of l-theanine (2 and 4 mg/kg) for 5 weeks in the drinking water of mice, followed by injection of Abeta(1-42) (2 microg/mouse, icv), suggested that green tea bioactive l-theanine component exerts a significantly attenuated Abeta(1-42) levels induced memory impairment by precipitated neuronal cell death in the cortex and hippocampus of the brain.

Moreover, l-theanine  also inhibited Abeta(1-42)-induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and activity of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) in initiated cellular apoptosis caused by reactive nitrogen species hyper activities.

 Further more, the bioactive  l-theanine also significantly reduced oxidative protein and lipid damage and elevated glutathione levels in the brain, thus reducing macromolecular oxidative damage in improved memory.

Additional study of green tea effect in attenuated accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide plaques is a major pathogenic event in Alzheimer's disease (AD) opinionated that in the wild type amyloid precursor protein (APP) transfected (N2a/APP695) cell line, Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a highly active catechin found in green tea, significantly reinforce the activity of nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), a regulator of adipocyte differentiation by promoting its mRNA and protein expressions in N2a/APP695 cells, thus attenuated Aβ generation in N2a/APP695 cells in induction of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Intriguingly, the efficacy of Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in inhibited β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide plaques accumulation was found to be attributed by its antioxidant activity in decreased the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins (Bax, caspase-3) activated by Aβ insults,  the activity of the anti-inflammatory agent NF-κB triggered by β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide and inhibited the oxidative stress by decreasing the levels of ROS and MDA and increased the expression of antioxidant  enzyme MnSOD.

These results suggest that EGCG may have preventive and/or therapeutic potential to prevent accumulated β-amyloid in initiated neuro degenerative patients by increasing cellular antioxidant defense capacity in inhibited Abeta-mediated oxidative and/or nitrosative stress to induce cell death. Intake of green tea extract should be taken with great care, as overdoses have been reported to cause  liver toxicity.

The evaluation of green tea effect in overexposure to environmental solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation (290-400 nm)  which has been found to increase risk of the development of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers in mice model showed that oral administration of  green tea pylophenols (GTPs) in drinking water or the topical application of EGCG prevents UVB-induced skin tumor development in tested subjects.

Particularly, (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major and most photoprotective polyphenolic component of green tea also exhibited a protective activity against UV in induction of skin cancer, through induction of immunoregulatory cytokine interleukin (IL) 12 in differentiation of naive T cells into Th1 cells and acted as T cell-stimulating factor in stimulate the growth and function of T cells.

Group treated with GTPs+UVB also demonstrated a reduced expression of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and MMP-9, which are activator associated with progression from benign to advanced cancer and enhanced expression of specific endogenous tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), tissues inhibitor of MMP in skin tumors in compared to mice treated with UVB alone.

Further more, GTPs+UVB group also reduced expressions of CD31 and vascular endothelial growth factor, in activated development of new blood vessel to nourish skin tumor cells proliferation and site expansion and inhibited expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen, a key factor in DNA replication and cell cycle regulation in skin cancer in compared to UVB group.

More importantly, mice treated with  GTPs+UVB group also showed  more cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells in the tumors  in compared to  UVB group by exhibited greater activation of caspase-3 epression in induced apoptosis of the tumor cells.

The information findings suggested a potential and therapeutic effect of green tea and its bioactive polyphenols (GTPs) in attenuated risk, progression and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga In Reduced Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Yoga therapy may have a profound effect in reduced risk and treatment of symptoms of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a Japanese study suggested.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a condition characterized by long term inflammation of the gut, including Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Yoga, the ancient practical technique for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a study of total of 100 IBD patients [ulcerative colitis (UC) n = 60 and Crohn's disease (CD) n = 40] during the clinical remission phase of disease, allocated randomly to either the yoga group underwent an 8-week yoga intervention (physical postures, pranayama, and meditation) 1- hour/day in addition to standard medical therapy (UC, n = 30; CD, n = 20) or the control group (UC, n = 30; CD n = 20), with standard medical therapy alone in the same period, researchers indicated that after the periods of intervention, yoga group expressed fewer arthralgia in UC patients and intestinal colic pain also reduced substantially in yoga group in compared to control.

In deed, yoga practice with breathing and meditation was found to demonstrate a significant effect in induction of relaxation and calmness of central nervous system, thus reducing acute and chronic psychological stress in induced production of catecholamines, glucagon, growth hormones, causing direct implication of inflammatory process in initiated chronic swelling and pain.

In children study to determine the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in inflammatory bowel disease population at a single pediatric center, through a survey distributed electronically and given out to patients in the clinic, researchers found that 16.3% of parents returned survey indicated that yoga/meditation may be helpful in treating their children inflammatory bowel disease.

After taking in account to other cofounders, Ceballos C, the led author said, "Families are supportive of CAM both at the time of diagnosis and as an ongoing component of their child's treatment".

Interestingly, in the study to evaluated mind-body complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities (e.g., relaxation or meditation) for symptom management in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers illustrated that in 67 adolescents with IBD ages 12-19 selected from a children's hospital completed a questionnaire, scientists indicated that
40% of returned survey used yoga relaxation from once/day to once/week for symptom management. In multivariate analyses, females were more likely to use relaxation and adolescents with more severe disease were more willing to consider using relaxation in the future.

Some researchers suggested that yoga relaxation based intervention could improve the quality of life in patients with IBD and reduce expression inflammatory cytokines through protein NF-κB in response to stress in precipitated inflammatory symptoms.

Taking altogether, Yoga may be considered as adjunct therapy combined with standard treatment for patients with  Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Food Therapy: Eggplant In Attenuated Risk and Treatment of Melanoma

Eggplant may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and treatment of melanoma, some scientists suggested.

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena with deeply purple color, belongings to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.

Melanoma cancer is medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the issues of skin. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

According to statistic, approximately 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma caner will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017.

The investigated the glycoalkaloids isolated from numerous Solanaceous plants, including eggplant in risk of melanoma, suggested that eggplant glycoalkaloids derivatives α-solamargine and α-solasonine demonstrated a significant effect in inhibition of cancer cells proliferation, in both vitro and vivo.

Further analysis of the chemistry and structure-activity also suggested that both α-solamargine and α-solasonine exert a strong antioxidant effect in increased cancer cell apoptosis and decrease tumor formation through expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in cancer cellular processes and NF-kappaB cascades in enhanced T-cell development, maturation, and proliferation, in animal models.

Interestingly, in melanoma cell lines, application of glycoalkaloid solamargine showed a complete
inhibition of the growth of metastatic and primary melanoma cell lines WM239 and WM115 with minimum effect on normal and benign WM35 melanoma cells through reduced blood supplies in induced necrosis by rapid induction of lysosomal membrane permeabilization in controls the passage to allow intracellular or intraorganellar antigens into and out of lysosomes.

Moreover, the action of glycoalkaloid solamargine in exhibition of cancer cell apoptosis was found to attribute to the physiological processes activated by cathepsin B activity in triggering the extrinsic mitochondrial death pathway through releasing cytochrome c, a hemeprotein found loosely in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion and tumor necrosis factor receptor 1(TNFR1) in expression of  the transcription factor NF-κB in mediated apoptosis.

alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in production of melanogenesis in B16 cells.

Further differentiation also indicated that, the identified chemicals also exerted anti melanoma cells preoperative effect through mediating pro-survival functions microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), through inhibition of Cyclic AMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB) in express a cassette of regeneration-associated genes with alternated DNA transcription caused by phosphorylation in expression of α-MSH-induced melanogenesis in B16 cells.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that Eggplant with abundant phytochemicals may have a therapeutic effect in reduced risk and treatment of melanoma. People with high risk of melanoma are recommended to add some portions of eggplant into their diet for risk prevention.
