Alternative Therapy: Yoga Posture Practice for a Healthy Pregnancy and Outcome

Kyle J. Norton (Scholar, Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga posture exercise may have a potential effect for a healthy pregnancy and outcome, some renowned studies suggested.

Posture is a state of holding the body still in a specific position, such as standing and sitting.

Yoga, the ancient practical technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the concerns of the adverse effect of yoga posture in pregnant women, researchers at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center filed the study of 25 healthy pregnant women with 10 assigned to regular yoga practice, 8 to familiar with yoga, and 7 with no yoga experience, matching age, race, body mass index, gestational age, and parity in each group, researchers found that
1. There was no change in maternal heart rate, temperature, pulse oximetry(the proportion of oxygenated hemoglobin in the blood in pulsating vessel), or fetal heart rate
2. The fetal heart rate across all 26 postures was normal.
3. There were no falls or injuries during the total cumulative 650 poses

Furthermore, after taking into account of other con founders researchers insisted that yoga posture also do not express a decreased fetal movement, contractions, leakage of fluid, or vaginal bleeding in the 24-hour follow-up.

Yoga postures have been found to ease back pain, indigestion, stress, and other pregnancy-related issues and to help you get smoothly through the next nine months.

However, some researchers suggested that some yoga postures must be avoid during pregnancy for the safety of mother and baby, such as inversions and prone postures which may have a potential in twisting your torso and close in on your belly, pressuring the belly,.....

Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors before taking any class of yoga.

In support of yoga posture efficacy in reduced certain complications during pregnancy, Dr. Martins RF the lead author and colleagues at the UNICAMP School of Medicine, conducted a randomized controlled trial with 60 pregnant women (age range, 14-40 years) with report of lumbopelvic pain at 12 to 32 weeks of gestation from June 2009 to June 2011 assigned to the yoga group, practicing exercises guided by this method, and the postural orientation group, performing standardized posture orientation according to instructions provided in a pamphlet,  suggested that
1. Yoga group expressed a significant improvement of median pain score in compared to postural orientation group.
2. Both groups showed a decreased response in relation to posterior pelvic pain provocation tests and a gradual reduction in pain intensity during 10 yoga sessions.

After taking into account of other co-founders, researchers postulated  that although yoga group displayed a  a high score in reduced pain as indicated by the pain provocation tests, standardized posture orientation may also be considered as another form of exercise in improved pregnancy outcome.

In deed, according to Bec Conant, prenatal yoga instructor at Om Births and birth doula in Boston, (Yoga helps) women to develop strength, flexibility and confidence throughout their pregnancy and post-partum.

More interestingly, in the study of 335 women of 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy attending the antenatal clinic at Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital in Bangalore, India, assigned to either (n=169)yoga postures and breathing, and meditation group and (n=166) or  control group, researchers found that yoga postures and breathing, and meditation group showed a higher birth weight and gestational age at delivery as well as lowering pregnancy complications such as isolated intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (p < 0.003) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) with associated IUGR (p < 0.025) in compared to control.

More importantly, there were no report of significant adverse effects noted in the yoga group.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga Induced Calmness Under Great Pressure

Kyle J. Norton (Scholar, Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga may be one of best practice to induce calmness for people who are at the state of constant pressure, some studies suggested

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the study of 13 normal healthy adults to determine the effects of alternate nostril yoga breathing on (a) cerebral hemisphere asymmetry, and (b) changes in the standard EEG bands by assigned the participants into three sessions (a) alternate nostril yoga breathing (ANYB), (b) breath awareness and (c) quiet sitting, on separate days, researchers showed that alternate nostril yoga breathing (ANYB) expressed a higher result in induced calmness through stress and anxiety reduction.

Yoga alternate nostril breathing exercise demonstrated a significant effect to individuals calmness under certain pressure, probably is a result in the settle the mind and body, and emotions and decreased expression of an overactive or worrying mind.

Interestingly, certain posts in the sequence culminating in Padmasana(Lotus Pose) have found to achieve a calm mind stage, according to yoga journal.

Other researchers suggested that yoga inner demonstration of calmness may also have an profound effect in healing process of the whole person--mind, body, and spirit.

Dr. Ott MJ at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, said, "Formal and informal daily practice fosters development of a profound inner calmness and nonreactivity of the mind, allowing individuals to face, and even embrace, all aspects of daily life, regardless of circumstances".

In deed, yoga found the inner peace of participants through intimacy and ability to listen to the body even in sadness, grief and other festering emotions.

More importantly, in a study of 8 healthy male volunteers of the age group 25.9 +/- 3 (SD) years assigned to Santhi Kriya practice daily for 50 minutes for 30 days with volunteer's body weight, blood pressure, oral temperature, pulse rate, respiration, ECG and EEG were recorded before and after the practice on the 1st day and subsequently on 10th, 20th and 30th day of their practice, researchers at the end of the experiment postulated that there were a gradual and significant decrease in the body weight and an increase in alpha activity of the brain (P less than 0.001) during the course of 30 days.

Further analysis also suggested that increase of alpha activity both in occipital and pre-frontal areas of both the hemispheres of the brain indicated an increase of calmness.

More importantly, Santhi Kriya practice expressed an increases oral temperature by 3 degrees F and decreases respiratory rate significantly on all practice days.

Santhi Kriya yoga, a mixture of combined yogic practices of breathing and relaxation.

According to Dr. Richard P. Brown, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Philip R. Muskin in the book of
How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, & Yoga in Mental Health, Santhi Kriya total cortical  alpha activity in the brain is associated to relaxation calmness and awareness and the practice may be considered as an adjunct therapy to induce a state of greater relaxation.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that people engaged in yoga lessons regularly are less likely to make wrong decision under pressure because of the result of yoga in expression of greater calmness.

In compared to conventional and herbal medicine; food therapy  takes even longer (sometimes more than six months) to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Beet may hold a potential use as a functional food in reduced levels of fat and cholesterol in patient with hyperlipidemia

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by high cholesterol and fat in the blood stream.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belongings to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

According to the study of rats fed with high fat diet induced hypercholesterol showed a significant reduced levels of fat and cholesterol through expression of liver protective effects by examined rat lipid profile of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides and histopathological analysis of liver, after treatment with beetroot.

Lipoproteins are basically fat and cholesterol, along with a lipid membrane containing proteins called apolipoproteins with function to transport lipid molecules in blood stream and extracellular fluid.in our body.

Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) calculated by low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood stream from measured levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) may be an important marker for the risk developing of heart disease.

Other, in the double-blinded, placebo-controlled study of  patients older than 40 years, subjects instructed to take either the NO dietary supplement called Neo40 Daily® or placebo twice daily on an empty stomach for 30 days, NO dietary supplement group showed a significant increase in both plasma nitrite (P < .01) and nitrate with elevated triglycerides reduced by 72% in compared placebo group.

Nitrite is a group of chemical compound containing the anion NO2− and Nitrate has a chemical symbol of NO31-
Nitrates are relatively harmless, if they are  not taken in high amounts.

The study also emphasized the achievement of nitrite reductase activity of nitrate-rich beetroot juice in improven NO status, involving decreased and modify cardiovascular risk factors, including high levels of triglycerides in the circulatory system.

Also, in a randomized controlled 5-week crossover intervention, separated by a 3-week washout involved subjects (n = 25) aged 58.6 (1.1) years (mean and SD) with a BMI of 26.6 (0.5) kg/m(2) and a total cholesterol (TC) of 5.8 (0.1) mmol/L (mean and SEM) given a high fiber (HF) and low fiber (LF) diet, treatment of high fiber (HF) group, expressed a Significant reduction in C-reactive protein (CRP) and a significant reduction in fibrinogen.

Fibrinogen, is an essential protein for blood clot formation.

Although the study found no influence of beet fiber in contribution to lower of blood cholesterol but ameliorated the inflammatory effect in induced cardiovascular disease of hypperlipidemic patients.

More importantly, nitrates and nitrites occur naturally in vegetables and also used as preservative added to in many foods including meat products. Injection of high amount in the body may induce anemic-like disorders and cancers.

Taking together, whole food and nitrate-rich beetroot juice may have a potential effect in reduced risk high blood cholesterol inducing heart disease through elevated levels of antioxidants and hepo- protection.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga in Regulated Lipid Metabolism

Kyle J. Norton (Scholar, Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga therapy may have a profound effect in improved lipid metabolism, thus reducing risk of early onset of  dyslipidemia, some studies suggested.

Lipid metabolism  is a natural process of our body in break down or storage of fats for energy after consumed food.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a self-as-control study of 36 male healthy volunteers between age group of 30-58 years assigned to yoga therapy with validated questionnaire and divided into Vata-Pitta (n = 16) and Pitta-Kapha (n = 20) groups, researchers indicated that
1. Group with Vata-Pitta (V-P) displayed a significant decrease in the levels of TC, LDL (p < 0.001) and significant increase in HDL (p < 0.01) in compared to While, Pitta-Kapha (P-K) group with significant decrease in TC (p < 0.001), TG (p < 0.01), LDL (p < 0.001) and VLDL (p < 0.05) levels.
2. In compared to the P-K group, the levels of baseline levels of TC, TG and VLDL were lower in V-P group

The result showed that both yoga intervention have had a positive effect in promoted lipid metabolism but lesser in the Pitta-Kapha group.

Dr. Doddoli S the led author said, "yoga practices can effectively regulate lipid metabolism and total body energy expenditure with reference to specific constitutional type".

Additionally, in a prospective, randomized, interventional controlled trial recruited 90 adolescents aged between 15 and 18 years met the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS assigned to yoga group practiced suryanamaskara, asanas, pranayama, and meditation 1 hour per day each day for 12 weeks and group practiced conventional physical exercises acted as control, after taking into account of other con founders, researchers suggested
1. Both groups reported a significant effect in fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose, but significantly different in homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance.
2. Yoga group expressed a positive effect in all aspects in lipid metabolism

Further analysis, researchers insisted, "(Yoga is) more effective than conventional physical exercises in improving glucose, lipid, and insulin values, including insulin resistance values, in adolescent girls with PCOS independent of anthropometric changes".

More importantly, in the investigation of yoga therapy in reduced risk lipid peroxidation, scientists postulated that yoga practice decreased oxidative stress through expression of lower concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, involving autoxidative alterations of fats and oils.

Taking altogether, yoga not only have a profound effect in reduce levels of bad cholesterol but also improved lipid metabolism in reduced over expression of lipid peroxidation.

**** Food Therapy: Maternal Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake in Risk of Poor Child Cognition and Behavior?(Revised)

By Kyle J. Norton

Food therapy is a slowly recover but effective method used in traditional medicine to ease symptoms and treatment of diseases, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the roots of the cause without inducing adverse effects.

Epidemiological studies do not agree that coffee and coffee caffeine intake during pregnancy may have a negative impact in child cognition and behavior.

Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Caffeine, a chemical stimulant found abundantly in caffeinated products, including tea and coffee is a class of methylxanthine having a profound impact in central nervous system (CNS).

Cognition and Behavior is a group of neuro function involving sensation and perception, learning and memory, attention, mental imagery, conceptual presentation, language expression, emotion response, motor control,.....

In the study of examine maternal serum paraxanthine at <20 and ≥26 weeks' gestation with the child's intelligence quotient (IQ) and problem behaviors at ages 4 and 7 years among 2,197 mother-child pairs, researchers showed that paraxanthine, a structurally related to caffeine.and caffeine's primary metabolite concentration has a significantly inverted effect at ≥26 weeks' gestation with child's IQ at age 7 years.

And at <20 weeks, paraxanthine also expressed a linearly associated with internalizing behavior at age 4 years.

Paraxanthine is a caffeine metabolite and central nervous system (CNS) stimulant processed a similar potency equal to that of caffeine.

Interestingly, after taking into account of over a range of values applicable to most pregnant women, researchers indicated that coffee caffeine in contribution to serum paraxanthine concentration showed no significant effect in association with childhood IQ or problem behaviors.

Contrast to the healthy mothers, women's reported coffee intake per day during pregnancy was associated with lower child's behavior rating scale (BRS), a complete overview of child and adolescent concerns and disorders, ratings in anemic children. Even with inclusion of other contributing factors and after anemic children given appropriated treatment, coffee consumption continuously showed a poor child cognition and behavior.

The Behavior Rating Scale (BRS) is an assessment frequently used by experts in assessment of the development of child cognition and behavior in infants and children, including autism.

Dr.Engle PL, the lead author said, " The effects of postnatal coffee ingestion in Guatemala were seen for sleep duration, but not for cognitive development. Prenatal coffee ingestion was negatively associated with behavior rating scales".

Taking altogether, coffee caffeine intake during pregnancy may not have any meaningful effect in association to children cognitive development and measurement by behavior rating scales, excluding anemic children. But caffeine as a neural stimulant, may have a negative impact in brain function by altering fetal normal neural transmission during stage of brain development, some researchers concerned.

Yoga participants are found to benefit from decrease levels of all kinds of physical, emotional, vocational, and academic stress, a renowned institute study suggested.

Yoga is an ancient practical technique of India, included breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture,..... with an aim to achieve harmonization of the body, mind, and spirit.

Stress is a normal reaction when a person comes under pressure or threat, as expression of sudden surge of hormone adrenaline. Prolong stress is found to exert physically, emotionally and mentally negative expression in various aspects, including sleep disturbance, digestive disorders,....

In a feasibility study explored engagement and effectiveness of a systematic 10-week yoga program aimed at university faculty, staff, and students, individual, researchers found that group attended yoga class displayed a significant improvement in cope with perceived stress and psychological, behavioral, and physical symptoms of stress, after 10 weeks.

Dr. Brems C, the researcher said, " The study demonstrates feasibility of a yoga intervention in an academic setting and provides preliminary evidence for efficacy in stress reduction."

Furthermore, according to the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, yoga learners not only benefits from stress reduction but also experience the decreased anxiety and improved sleep and improved quality of life.

According to yoga instructors, there are many ways in yoga poses in reduced stress cause of negative outcomes.

1. Yoga in relax the body
By relax your body, yoga created a state calm, thus reducing tension caused by the stress event
2. Yoga for your mind
The emptiness stage of your mind provided you time and a clear mind to rethink the stress event in positive ways.
3. Yoga breathing
The slow and peaceful breathing in yoga reduced tension caused by stressful event and creates a control of psychophysiological states of relaxation
4. Connection between mind and body
By creating the stage of harmonization in the mind and body, yoga lead us to the stage existed in the present moment and connected mindful, conscious and connected way in solving stress.

In a pilot study, nine nurses participated in 6 weekly sessions of yoga nidra to measure of sleep, stress, and muscle fatigue in psychiatric nurses, researchers found that 6 weekly sessions of yoga nidra results in positive perception of stress level and muscle fatigue.

Yoga nidra is s form of yoga, using deep relaxation and meditation to create a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping, like the "going-to-sleep" stage with an aim to improved patients sleep.

Additionally, yoga also demonstrated a positive effect in alleviated stress during pregnancy, according to the The University of Tokyo study.

In recruited 60 healthy primiparas without complications, attended yoga classes twice a month and to practice yoga at their homes using DVD 3 times a week from 20 gestational weeks until childbirth, measurement of hormone and alpha-amylase concentrations related to stress showed to decrease significantly with increased scores of vigor for a positive dimension of mood.

High levels of alpha-amylase concentrations is highly associated to psychosocial stress. and
salivary alpha-amylase activity is often considered as surrogate markers of sympathetic activation in response to stress.

Therefore, participated in yoga class may be a potential source in reduced risk of mental disorders  and enhanced fetal growth in pregnant women, as well as promoting stress alleviation in healthy adults

**** Food Therapy: Coffee, the Gout Killer Functional Food(Revised)

By Kyle J. Norton

Good News for coffee lovers, coffee consumption daily is associated to reduced risk and treatment of
chronic and recurrent gout, some institute studies proposed.

Gout mostly effected one joint, is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in blood, inducing joint inflammation.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the joint study lead by the Central South University, in the review literature of PubMed and EMBASE databases, up to April 2015, out of total of 11 observational studies (6 cross-sectional, 3 cohort and 2 case-control studies), coffee consumption showed a significantly inverse association with incidence of gout.

The study also found out that the efficacy of coffee consumption in reduced risk of gout showed no significant difference between the highest and the lowest coffee intake in terms of serum uric acid (SUA) level.

Uric acid, a normal product in the metabolic breakdown of purine may have a major effects in induced gout expression if secreted in high dose.
According to general belief, high blood concentrations of uric acid can lead to gout development and numbers of medical conditions including diabetes and the formation of kidney stones.

Additionally, in the total of 45,869 men with no history of gout at baseline with intake of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, tea, and total caffeine evaluated in every 4 years, participants in returned questionnaires indicated that increasing coffee intake was (1-3, 4-5, and > or = 6 cups per day) inversely associated with thvee risk of gout depending to numbers of cups consumed daily.

Caffeine, a chemical stimulant found abundantly in caffeinated products, such as tea and coffee is a class of methylxanthine having an impact in central nervous system (CNS), depending to volumes of intake.

The relative risk of gout incidence in coffee drinkers is as low as .41 in compared to non coffee consumed participants.

Most importantly, the total caffeine levels from all sources, including coffee and tea intake showed no associated risk of gout.

Other researchers, in the finding of gout developed, suggested that coffee intake of 4 to 5 and >/=6 cups daily lower risk of gout in compared to no intake (0.26 mg/dl and and 0.43 mg/dl respectively) and total caffeine from coffee and other beverages and tea intake were not associated with serum uric acid levels.

Also, according to the data from 14,758 participants ages >/=20 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), coffee consumption is associated to ameliorated serum uric acid level and hyperuricemia frequency.

Hyperuricemia is excess of uric acid in the blood stream passing through from liver. Normally, uric acid is excreted during intestinal process.

According to Dr. Davide Grassi, the lead author in the study of Chronic Hyperuricemia, Uric Acid Deposit and Cardiovascular Risk, said "Hyperuricemia is commonly associated with traditional risk factors such as dysglicemia, dyslipidemia, central obesity and abnormal blood pressure, i.e. the metabolic syndrome."

In deed, the effects of coffee in reduced risk gout may be attributed to the presence of coffee components of chlorogenic acid and antioxidants activities in reduce blood levels of insulin which have been found to associated linearly to levels of uric acid.  In other words, insulin levels are low, uric acid tends to be lower, too.

Finally, If you are coffee lovers, as always, we recommended that you do not add sugar and high-fat dairy creams in your drinks.

Taking together, coffee consumption is associated to attenuated risk and treatment of gout caused by elevated serum uric acid level, depending to numbers of cup intake daily. But please do not totally depend on you coffee habits solely to lower gout risk and also take into account of other eating habits as well.
