Food Therapy: Coffee, Reduced Risk of Type 2 diabetes for Every Cup/Day Intake

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Good news for coffee lover, your risk of diabetes is significant reduced in compared to non coffee drinking population, a respectable researcher indicated

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose, either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

In the reviewed literature of 20 prospective studies with 1,109,272 study participants and 45,335 cases of type 2 diabetes included in the analysis with follow-up duration ranged from 10 months to 20 years, coffee intake is inversely associated to risk of type 2 diabetes.

Compared with no or rare coffee consumption, the range of relative risk (RR; 95% CI) for diabetes significant lower in all studies was 0.92, 0.85 0.75, 0.71, 0.67 respectively for people who have 1-6 cups/day in all reviewed studies.

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed an insignificant difference in relative risk but inversely diabetic development in a dose-response manner.

According to the Zhejiang University, coffee consumption reduced risk of type II diabetes may involve expression on different mechanistic factors, inclding glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, insulin resistance, glucose-6-phosphatase, intestinal glucose absorption, antioxidant activity, inflammatory biomarkers, nuclear factor-κB inhibition, glucose uptake, glucose homeostasis, glucose metabolism, and insulin secretion.

Dr. Akash MS, the head researcher saids, " the experimental and epidemiologic evidences presented here elucidate the protective effects of coffee consumption on T2DM, involving multiple preventive mechanisms".

Other, in the analysis of risk of autoimmune diabetes with coffee intake in adults, proposed that although consumption of coffee showed an inverse association with type II diabetes through improving the production of high glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody, the general trend was weak.

Risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults is reduced even further with additional cup of coffee per day. the study also indicated.

The finding evidences suggested that coffee with caffeine or caffeine showed a strong protective effect against early onset of type 2 diabetes, and risk of T2DM decreased even more for every cup/day increment in coffee intake, expressed by dose-response analysis.

Food Therapy: Asparagus, the Natural Whole Food with Antidiarrhoeal effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Whole food(herbal medicine) used as medical treatment,  linking health benefits in prevention, management and treatment of diseases has induced much interests in today renowned scientists.
But many researchers have raised question of herbal quality, because geographic differences, time of grown and harvest, etc. may effect their's potency. I do believe, these questions can only be answered by experience herbalists.

Recent study by the renowned institute suggested that Asparagus racemosus processed an antidiarrheal effect through ameliorating the discharge from the bowel.

Asparagus is a flowering plant belong to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa and western Asia, used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavour and diuretic properties.

Diarrhoea is condition of frequent discharge of feces in liquid form.

According to the K.P. College of Pharmacy, Asparagus racemosus wild root extract used traditional herbal medicine exerted the antidiarrhoeal potency against several experimental models of diarrhoea in model animals, similar to those of conventional medicine such as loperamide.

This efficacy is attributed to the root extracts in mediation of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a principal hormone in expression of inflammatory diseases.
Dr. Venkatesan N. the lead researcher said, "The plant extracts showed significant (P < 0.05) inhibitor activity against castor oil induced diarrhoea and PGE2 induced enteropooling in rats when tested at 200 mg/kg. Both extracts also showed significant (P < 0.001) reduction in gastrointestinal motility ".

In support of the above study, the test of animal model on Alpha-2 blocker (see alpha(2)-adrenoceptor) experimentally-induced diarrhoea and ulceration, showed a positive effect of methanolic extract of Asparagus pubescens root in reduced significantly intestinal propulsive movement, and intestinal fluid accumulation in (500-1500 mg/kg) in dose-dependent manner.

In fact, the antidiarrhoeal effect of asparagus may be a result of modulated the expression of alpha(2)-adrenoceptor in regulated vascular smooth muscle  contraction and vasoconstriction though Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) modification. But further studies may be necessary to validate this potency.

Food Therapy: Asparagus, the Natural Whole Food for Reduced Symptoms and Treatment of Psychological Stress

By Kyle J.

Modern study suggested that Asparagus extract (ETAS) may have a potential in improved Psychological Stress, the responded to the psychological stress questionnaires, conducted by a renowned institute indicated.

According to the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over trial undertaken in healthy volunteer, oral administration of ETAS (150 mg/d) consumed for 28 day, significantly upregulated the sympathetic nerve activity in reduced Psychological Stress.

Dr. Takanari J, the lead author in the study said, " ETAS significantly increased the number of answers and the number of correct answers in the U-K test, suggesting that it might improve office work performance with swiftness and accuracy under stressful conditions" and "ETAS intake may exert beneficial effects, resulting from well-controlled stress management, in healthy individuals.".

A study to investigate the efficacy of the extract against psychological tress, standardized methanolic extract of Asparagus racemosus (MAR) (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, per oral) administered for 7 days, in comparison to intake of Lorazepam (0.5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) used as a positive control, conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University, suggested that the herbal extract improves psychological stress through a physiological modulation of the stress pathways with limited change on monoaminergic systems in comparison to controls.

The study also stated that this efficacy may also be contributed to decrease the plasma corticosterone (CORT) and norepinephrine (NE), levels which control the stress aspect during certain stressful events.

Monoamine is a neurostransmitter including dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and serotonin played an important role in regulated on arousal, emotion and cognition.

Dr. Joshi T and colleagues at the Kumaun University, also expressed the usefulness of ethanolic extract of the roots of A. racemosus in ameliorating restraint stress in induced elevation of blood glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol levels, as well as stress induced variations in levels of lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide, protein and glutathione content in mouse brain..

Taking together, Asparagus and its extract may consist a potential effect in reduced psychological stress through expression of stress hormone and antioxidant in a physiological modulation of the stress pathways.

Food Therapy: Coffee, A Potent Beverage for Weight Loss and Weight Management?

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of the disease.

Coffee, a popular drink may be an excellent beverage for induced weight loss and weight management, a reviewed study by respectable university revealed.

Coffee, emerging as a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Weight loss is an intentional reduction of the total body mass, according to the definition stated by medicine, health, or physical fitness experts.

According to the University of Exeter, in the reviewed data from human clinical trials, differentiated 8 eligible trials, green coffee extract (GCE) have moderated or significant effect in reduced weight loss in compared to placebo.

In rat model, 48t rats fed with either a control diet with water (C) or a control diet with a coffee solution (CF). At the end of week 4, animals in each dietary group were subdivided into three exercise groups: before exercise (BE), during exercise (DE), and after exercise (AE), group fed with coffee solution showed a significant in reduced total weight compared diet with water group.

The efficacy of dietary coffee in decreased total weight loss may be attributed to the extract function in stimulated the production of antioxidant in suppressed free radical expression. as well as increasing total cholesterol.

Dr. Choi EY the lead author said,"freeze-dried instant coffee can promote activities of antioxidant enzymes and induce weight loss but also aggravate the plasma cholesterol profile in rats".

Additionally, in the compared the daily consumption of coffee and caffeinated beverages between 494 weight loss maintainers and 2129 individuals from the general population, consumed significantly more cups of coffee are found in the weight loss maintainers than the general population group.

Other researchers insisted that the efficacy of coffee in induced weight loss, probably due to activities of caffeine and other chemical constituents of coffee, such as chlorogenic acid and quinides.
Collective findings suggested that coffee may have a potentially therapeutic property in weight deduction. But some reviewed trials were associated with a high risk of bias. poor methodological quality, therefor, more studies are necessary to confirm the promising validity, some researchers suggested.

Postprandial metabolism is the chemical processes after eating, such as consumption of red meat is associated with an increased risk of cancer due to heat induced production of heterocyclic amine 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), involved in the development of human carcinogen.

According to evaluation of the the effect of cruciferous vegetable consumption on the metabolism of PhIP in 20 non-smoking Caucasian male subjects, with three 12-day phase, intake of Cruciferous Vegetables increased the metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids and inhibited levels of heterocyclic amine 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) caused by intake of cooked red meat.

Dr. Walters DG, the lead author in the study said, " Cruciferous vegetable consumption significantly increased the urinary excretion of N(2)-hydroxy-PhIP-N(2)-glucuronide in 0-48 h urine samples to 127 and 136% of levels" and "cruciferous vegetable consumption can induce both the phase I and II metabolism of PhIP in humans"

In support of the above, in a three-period, dietary intervention study carried out with 20 non-smoking Caucasian male subjects consuming cooked meat meals containing known amounts of these carcinogens, the high cruciferous vegetable diet (250 g each of Brussels sprouts and broccoli per day) during period 2 reduced levels of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo(4,5-b)pyridine (PhIP) and induced hepatic CYP1A2(metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids) activity.

In fact, the examination of the after another 12 days without cruciferous vegetables consumption (period 3 of the study) levels of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo(4,5-b)pyridine (PhIP) also was still reduced by 17 and 30%,.
This prolong response of metabolism of cruciferous vegetables may suggested that other enzymes may involve in reduced levels of PhIP,  instead of only metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that intake of cruciferous vegetable may reduce levels of heat induced chemical agents in exhibition of cancers, particular in cancers caused by intake of cooked red meat.
