The eyes are a complex optical system that allows us to see by reacting to light.
There are many factors that can cause eye problems that disturb vision including
* Severe, sudden eye pain
* Recurrent pain in or around the eye
* Persistent eye itching, burning, or a heavy discharge in the eyes
* Sudden change in vision
* Unusual, even painful, sensitivity to light or glare
* Swollen, and red eyes
Eye diseases may induce symptoms of hazy, blurred, or double vision, seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots, seeing rainbows or halos around lights, and severe onset of floaters.
Most cases of eye inflammation are caused by an infection by viruses or bacteria,
Treatment of eye inflammation is totally depending on which parts of the eye are affected. The condition has been found to progress to a severe form if untreated.
Uveitis is a form of eye inflammation that affects the middle layer of tissue in the eye wall (uvea), inducing symptoms of eye redness, pain, and blurred vision. The condition can affect one or both eyes
Pink eye or conjunctivitis is the inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and eyeball
Conjunctivitis is most caused by commonly caused by a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction, particularly in babies with an incompletely opened tear duct.
The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are redness in one or both eyes, itchiness in one or both eyes, a gritty feeling in one or both eyes, a discharge in one or both eyes and tearing
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of eye drops made from Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne on patients with catarrhal conjunctivitis.
Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.
The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infections and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.
The prospective, open-label, one-armed, multicentered, multinational cohort trial conducted by the Witwatersrand University included 12 experienced anthroposophical general practitioners and ophthalmologists in Germany and Switzerland and patients who were treated with one drop of Euphrasia single-dose eye drops 1-5 times a day.
According to the differentiation of all symptoms that were given for the right or left eye separately, the eye drop showed a complete recovery in 53 patients (81.5%) and a clear improvement in 11 patients (17.0%).
However, there was a slight worsening in 1 patient which could only be determined in the second week of treatment (1.5%).
No serious adverse events were observed during the entire trial.
The efficacy and tolerability were evaluated by the patients and doctors as "good" to "very good" in more than 85%.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Euphrasia single-dose eye drops can effectively and safely be used for various conjunctival conditions by general practitioners and ophthalmologists. A dosage of one drop three times a day seems to be the generally prescribed dosage".
Taken together, Eyebright may be considered a remedy for the treatment of catarrhal conjunctivitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
