Queen Herb Chaste Tree Berry Shows a Valuable Chemotherapeutic Property for the Treatment of Cancers in Vitros, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton.

Chaste tree berry is found to exhibit a significant anti-cancer activity, a recent study by renowned study advised.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body. In the late stage, the cancer cells may travel away from the originated site
to infect other tissues and organs.

According to the Tianjin Institute for Biomedicinal Research, in the evaluated the apoptosis-inducing effect of chaste tree berry, using observation under a light microscope, flow cytometric analysis, and agarose gel electrophoresis, Vitexicarpin, a flavonoid found in chaste tree berry significantly inhibited proliferation of human cancer cells lines A2780(human ovarian carcinoma), HCT-15(human, colon, colorectal adenocarcinoma), HT-1080(fibrosarcoma cell line) and K562(Human chronic myeloid leukemia cells), depending to the concentration.

Dr. Wang HY the lead researcher in the study said, "Vitexicarpin induces apoptosis.... via mitochondria(in regulated cell metabolism)-controlled apoptotic pathway".

In support of the above analysis, the crude extract prepared with ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits exerted strong cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines of human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

The inhibition of the extract is attributed to the effect on cell death through apoptosis and increased intracellular oxidation in the tumor cells.

Other researchers suggested that the cytotoxic effects of Chaste tree berry may be involved various aspects, including the JNK (apoptosis) pathway. as indicated in the new native lignan VB6 study.

Taking together, there is no doubt, that chaste tree berry may be considered as a valuable chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of various types of cancer, depending on further evaluation.

Coffee and Coffee's Caffeine May Reduce The Risk of Colon Cancer, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Good news for coffee drinkers, coffee consumption regularly is associated with reduced risk of colon cancer, a renowned institute study suggested.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Colon Cancer is a disease characterized by irregular cell growth in the colon, with the tendency in spreading to distant parts of the body, depending on the stage.

According to the Federico II University of Naples, the efficacy of coffee consumption in attenuated risk of the colon may be attributed to its bioactive components, such as polyphenols, melanoidins, carbohydrates, diterpenes,...

Dr. Vitaglione P, the lead author said, " ...metabolism and composition, both coffee chlorogenic acids and dietary fiber, including melanoidins, may reduce CRC risk, increasing colon motility and antioxidant status".

However, phytochemicals found in coffee may be different that depends on the amount and type of compounds ingested with the beverage, the variety of coffee used, the roasting degree, the type of brewing method as well as the serving size.

Additionally, in the investigated the protective action of coffee against Caco-2 human colon carcinoma cells. researchers filed the following results
1. Even with low concentrations, coffee (<5%) inhibited the proliferation of Caco-2 cells without affecting normal cell viability.
2. . Increasing the duration of coffee bean roasting showed a significant in reduction the mutative risk of gene KRAS expression.

3 Coffee reduces risk colon cancer through suppressed miR-30c and miR-96, in promoted cell proliferation, migration and invasion, and enhanced tumor growth.

Interestingly, in the examine of the association between coffee consumption and CRC risk as well as a risk by anatomic subsite among Japanese, using data from the Hospital-based Epidemiological Research Program at Aichi CancerCenter I and II (HERPACC-I and II) with subjects enrolled in HERPACC-I between 1988 and 2000 and in HERPACC-II between 2001 and 2005, scientists found that returned self-administered questionnaire from participants, coffee consumption in reduced risk of colon cancer is associated to numbers of cup intake daily, in compared to non-drinker.

The relative odd ratio of less than 1 cup/day, 1-2 cups/day, and 3 or more cups/day for CRC were 0.88, 0.90, and 0.78 respectively.

Dr. Senda Nakagawa H, the lead author said, " Subsite-specific analysis revealed a significant inverse linear trend between coffee consumption and distal colon cancer (p-trend = 0.048), and a tendency toward a lower risk of rectal cancer (p-trend = 0.068)".

The finding evidence suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine may have a profound effect in reduced risk of cancer linearly.

Healthyfood Eggplants Process Anti-Fibrosarcoma Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J.  Norton

Eggplant may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of Fibrosarcoma some scientists suggested.

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena with deep purple color, belongings to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.

Fibrosarcoma is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the fibrous connective tissue. The tumor can be classified into low grade, intermediate malignancy, and high malignancy, depending on different degrees of differentiation:

In the investigation of eggplant (Solanum melongena var. marunasu) extract activity on human fibrosarcoma HT-1080 cell lines, researchers at the Gifu Pharmaceutical University found that delphinidin, a flavonoid pigment-containing in the peel, do not affect tumor cell cells interact and attach to a surface, substrate or another cell to the basement membrane matrix Matrigel (MG) to initiate the tumor cells proliferation or migration, but modulated the expression of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-2 and MMP-9 secreted by the tumor cell, thus reducing the risk of the matrices in stimulated cancer cell growth and tumor expansion.

Basement Membrane Matrix is a solubilized basement membrane preparation extracted from the Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) mouse sarcoma.

The function of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-2 and MMP-9 are to degrade the extracellular matrix (ECM) which plays essential role in collection of extracellular molecules secreted by support cells to provide structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells.

In vivo, the basement membrane matrix Matrigel (MG) has been used to measure the angiogenic inhibitors and stimulators, repair damaged tissues, and increase tumor growth in some cancer experiments.

Further differentiation of delphinidin in cancer risk insisted that the chemical constituents also restained cancer cell invasion through reduced expression of inhibited serum- and vascular endothelium growth factor(VEGF) in induction of making new blood vessel to provide nutrients and oxygen for proliferation and cancer progression.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent stimulator of angiogenesis, associated with unfavorable clinical characteristics by promoting proliferation secreted by various human cancers.
Moreover, researchers also indicated that the efficacy of anti-cancer cell activity of delphinidin was attributed to the function of phytochemical in triggering extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) in regulated cancer cell cycle division, including meiosis, mitosis, and post mitosis.

In-depth analysis also discovered that delphinidin isolated from eggplant also activated the independence of nitric oxide pathway in suppression of cancer cell progression by initiated cell cycle arrest in the G(0)/G(1) phase.

Interestingly, gallic acid and anthocyanins, the bioactive chemical constituents isolated from eggplant and other fruits and vegetables in the study of human fibrosarcoma HT-1080 suggested that injection of gallic acid and anthocyanins derivative delphinidin-3-glucoside demonstrated significant activity in the induction of cell apoptosis through cytotoxicity.

According to the Zymographic analysis, gallic acid exerted the anti-cancer cell growth and tumor invasiveness through inhibited the secretion and activation of gelatinase proteases in breaking down protein into its building blocks, amino acids of MMP to activate cancer progression and metastasis by the tumor.

In humans, gelatinases are expressed by matrix metalloproteinases MMP2 and MMP9.
Importantly, gallic acid also ameliorated cancer progression through inhibition of the matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-2 and MMP-9 same as the effectiveness as delphinidin involved in the anti-angiogenetic activity.

Taken together, eggplant with abundant bioactive chemical compounds such as gallic acid and anthocyanins may be used as a functional food for reduced risk and treatment of fibrosarcoma, depending to further investigation.

Beetroots Inhibit the Early Onset of Insulin Resistances and Type 2 Diabetes, Researchers Say

Beet juice containing phytochemicals may alter postprandial glucose and insulin responses in prediabetics, some scientists suggested.

Insulin resistance, a condition of not providing enough insulin to counter the rise of blood glucose is considered as the early progression of onset of diabetes.

According to The American Diabetes Association (ADA), people with insulin resistance and prediabetes are associated with the early onset of type 2 diabetes as a result of unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

And, 150 million people worldwide and 43 million people in the US are currently suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome.

In broader terms, insulin resistance is considered a major factor that can lead to type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and prediabetes.

The actual cause of insulin resistance is debatable, some researchers suggested genetic mutation, aging and ethnicity play important roles in the development of insulin sensitivity, And people such as obesity, excess body weight, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, too much belly fat, a lack of exercise, smoking are susceptible to increase risk of insulin resistance.

More importantly, untreated insulin resistance may also increase the risk of abnormal skin conditions, known as acanthosis nigricans with dark, velvety patches.

According to Dr. Wallace IR, the lead author in the study of "Dose-response effect of fruit and vegetables on insulin resistance in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease: a randomized controlled trial", of 105 participants (mean age 56 years) followed a 4-week washout diet, some class of vegetables and fruits may have particular antidiabetic properties.

Therefore, the selection of such classes and types of vegetables and fruits may be good interventions in prevented diabetes in patients with insulin resistance or higher risk of diabetes.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall, belongings to the amaranth family,

Investigation of the efficacy of beet in ameliorated risk of insulin resistance may be associated different aspects involved numbers of mechanisms.

In a total of sixteen healthy individuals recruited, with consumed test meals in a controlled single-blind cross-over design including beet juice, researchers found that such meals exert a remarkable in countering the glucose uptake.

Additionally, the tested subject also showed a significant lowering of the postprandial insulin response in the early phase and a significantly lower glucose response in the 0–30 min phase, in compared to control fed with control beverage matched for macronutrient content (MCON).

Further analysis indicated that beet juice attenuated the rise of glucose in the bloodstream may be attributed to constituents of
* Betacyanin betalain pigments which process anti glucose uptake and insulin resistance in patients with diabetes and other metabolic diseases

* Phytochemical polyphenols in stimulated insulin secretion and reduced hepatic glucose output by inhibited α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and glucose absorption in the intestine.

α-Amylase is a protein enzyme having a function to convert hydrolysis of starch into sugars.

α-glucosidase is glucosidase in the small intestine with the function to break down starch and disaccharides to sugars.

Moreover, in the homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance index, dietary nitrate from beet juice also demonstrated a strong effect in lowering insulin resistance in test subjects. compared to control through regulation of glucose homeostasis and insulin signaling pathway.

Dietary nitrate from beet juice also improved lipid homeostasis, inflammation, and endothelial function.

Dr. Peter C, the lead researcher said, "Betalains, polyphenols and dietary nitrate found in the beetroot juice may each contribute to the observed differences in the postprandial insulin concentration".

Interestingly, in comparison the effect of ingredients of combined 100 ml black tea, beetroot juice or control (water) in 16 obese, insulin-resistant males, researchers revealed that beetroot juice plus black tea treated groups exhibited a decreased postprandial peripheral vascular resistance (VR) in resistance vessels, but lesser than black tea, in compared to other groups.

According to further examination, the efficacy of beet juice and black tea in attenuated insulin resistance was attributed to increased postprandial blood flow in induced glucose disposal and decreased postprandial insulin response by 29 %...

Truly, standardized breakfasts with or without beet-fiber given, in random order, to non-insulin-dependent diabetics study, found that beet fiber intake individuals expressed a strong effect in rate of glucose decrease after the meal. with the blood glucose levels monitored continuously and hormonal responses determined at regular intervals for 3 hr.

Both tested subjects did not exert notable differences with regard to the plasma levels of insulin, C-peptide or glucagon in regulated levels of blood glucose,

C-peptide is a substance involved in proinsulin molecules produced by the beta cells in the pancreas.

The collective findings may provide footage of using beet juice as a functional food in ameliorated the risk of insulin resistance and prevented the early onset of type 2 diabetes.

Fennel Processes Anti Skin Aging Properties, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reduced stress implication, some scientists suggested.

Skin aging is a process involved a complex biological process induced by a combination of endogenous or intrinsic and exogenous or extrinsic factors, that can not be stopped or prevented, characterizing by features such as wrinkling, loss of elasticity, laxity, and rough-textured appearance

However, by looking after your skin daily, you can delay the process.

The endogenous or intrinsic factors that influence skin aging, include genetics, cellular metabolism, hormone, and metabolic processes.

And, the exogenous or extrinsic factors that may cause the early onset of skin aging include chronic light exposure, pollution, ionizing radiation, chemicals, toxins.

Furthermore, Dr. Shoubing Zhang, the lead author in the study of Fighting against Skin Aging, The Way from Bench to Bedside, wrote, " This aging process is accompanied with phenotypic changes in cutaneous cells as well as structural and functional changes in extracellular matrix components such as collagen and elastin".

These results suggested that skin aging is not only caused by the complex system involving intrinsic and extrinsic factors but also some factors that have yet been discovered.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the carrot family, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In the findings of the natural ingredient that has a potential effect in protecting the skin against aging, researchers launched an investigation to test whether formulation containing 4% concentrated seed extract of F. vulgare produce the antiaging effect when it was applied.

After an assessment of the data collected during the experiment, researchers found that the formulation shows a notable anti-aging effect with supporting experimental data related to skin moisture and transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

And, the texture parameter energy showed that the formulation possesses potential antiaging effects.

Additionally, in the study to test the effects of the application of herbal against UVB-induced photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) in vitro, researchers showed that mice treated with fennel exert strong antioxidant and inflammatory activities in significantly increase the production of collagen, elastin and TGF-β1 levels while blocking the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) production in UVB irradiation,

Elastin is a highly elastic protein in connective tissue that was found to return skin to its original position when it is pressed.

TGF-β1 is a cytokine with the function of protecting the skin against inflammation caused by UVB-induced photoaging.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of enzymes that are responsible for the structural component of connective tissue degradation,

Furthermore, fennel dose-dependently also inhibited the production of ROS and enhanced the expression of cytoprotective antioxidants produced by the host tissue, including GSH.

These results suggested that fennel may be a potential botanical agent for the treatment of skin damage induced by UV irradiation.

Moreover, the study to explore the fennel anti-skin aging effect after testing subjects were exposed to ultraviolet radiations (UVR) to induce skin sunburn, the condition that produces harmful entities, reactive oxygen species (ROS) also suggested, creams containing fennel are found to be loaded with antioxidants to quench ROS, leading to photo-protective effects.

Taken all together, fennel containing high amounts of antioxidants may be considered a functional food for the treatment of skin damage caused by sun exposure and protection of youthful skin against an imbalance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals as well as maintaining the skin moisture and preventing the transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Aloe Vera in the Prevention and Treatment of Gastric Ulcers With No Side Effects in Vivo, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural herbal medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcers without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

A gastric ulcer is a medical condition characterized by open sores that develop on the inside lining of the stomach. If the open sores are developed in the upper part of the small intestine, it is a duodenal ulcer.

The most common cause of the gastric ulcer, which represented over 30% of all cases is associated with the infection of H. pylori.

Certain medical conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and long-term use of some medication such as alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel) are also the prevalent risk factors that elevate the disease onset.

The most common symptoms of a gastric ulcer are gastrointestinal discomforts, blood in your stool, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath with physical activity, and persistent fatigue.

Some patients with severe gastric ulcer may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood, feeling faint or losing consciousness. However, 75% of patients with gastric ulcers do not feel any symptoms.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please make that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of the condition.

Treatment of gastric ulcers is totally depending on the causes, such as histamine receptor blockers (H2 blockers) or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for patients with gastric ulcers induced by overproduction of stomach acid and the antibiotics for the infection caused by H. pylori.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

The herb has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc.

It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols. All ingredients work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.

In the study to examine the effects of Aloe vera and sucralfate on gastric microcirculatory changes, cytokine levels, and gastric ulcer healing in 48 Male Spraque-Dawley rats divided into four groups as the following, group1 served an as a control group, group 2 as gastric ulcer group without treatment, groups 3 and 4 as gastric ulcer treatment groups with sucralfate and Aloe vera, researchers found
* On day 1 after induction of gastric ulcer and before treatment the leukocyte adherence in postcapillary venule was significantly increased in the ulcer groups, an indication of immune response to the gastric damage when compared to the control group. The level of TNF-alpha was elevated and the level of IL-10 was reduced, an indication of overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

* In the ulcer groups treated with sucralfate and Aloe vera, leukocyte adherence was reduced in postcapillary venule. The level of IL-10 was elevated, but the level of TNF-. alpha had no significant difference, an indication of the leading process with the presence of anti-inflammatory cytokine.

* On day 8, the leukocyte adherence in postcapillary venule and the level of TNF-alpha were still increased and the level of IL-10 was reduced in the ulcer group without treatment.

Dr. Eamlamnam K, the lead scientist at the final days of the study, wrote, "histopathological examination of the stomach on days 1 and 8 after induction of gastric ulcer showed that gastric tissue was damaged with inflammation. In the ulcer groups treated with sucralfate and Aloe vera on days 1 and 8, gastric inflammation was reduced, epithelial cell proliferation was enhanced and gastric glands became elongated".

The results further confirm the efficacy of Aloe vera in promoting gastric ulcer healing, through the expressions of leukocyte adherence and TNF-alpha level, which elevate IL-10 level.

Additionally, in the examination of the anti-inflammatory effects of Aloe vera on leukocyte-endothelium in the gastric microcirculation of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-infected of 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 3 groups: control, H. pylori-infected, and A. vera-treated group (200 mg/kg b.w., twice daily). researchers found that

* H. pylori-infected group shows a significant increase of the leukocyte adhesion cells and the TNF-alpha level compared with the control group on day 8.

* After treatment with A. vera H. pylori-infected group exerts a reduced the leukocyte adhesion and TNF-alpha significantly.

Dr. Prabjone R, the lead author at the final conclusion said, "enhancement in leukocyte-endothelium interaction could be improved by the treatment of A. vera, associated with the reduction in TNF-alpha level".

Interestingly, in the acute gastric mucosal lesions induced by 0.6 M HCl and acid output Aloe vera endowed with gastric acid anti-secretory activity were found to protect the gastric mucosa at low concentrations against injurious agents. Its bioactive component, the Polymer fraction reduces 50% of the mRNA expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the initiation of the pathogenesis of inflammation.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers without inducing any side effects.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, further data collection large example size, and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Aloe vera anti-gastric ulcers possibilities.

Honey Shows Anti Hypertensive Property with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking a natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy for normalizing the blood pressure, according to studies.

Hypertension is a chronic condition caused by abnormally high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a condition of a cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

In high blood pressure individuals, due to the elevated blood pressure in your arteries, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the blood vessels.

In low blood pressure individuals, the reduced blood pressure in the arteries drops can cause the heart to pump blood at a slower rate than normal.

According to the standard guidelines, the levels of blood pressure is normal if it is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90).

People with blood pressure lower than 120/80 are considered normal without accompanied by symptoms of light-head or dizziness.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the U.S. 29% or 100 millions of adults have hypertension during 2015–2016 and hypertension prevalence increased with age and was 33.2% among those aged 40–59 and 63.1% among those aged 60 and over.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers in the course of finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of high blood pressure investigated the safety and effect of intrapulmonary administration (by inhalation) of 60 % honey solution, 10% dextrose, or distilled water in normal or diabetic subjects.

Twenty-four healthy subjects, 16 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, and six patients with hypertension were selected to participate in the study.

Twelve healthy subjects were subjected to distilling water inhalation for 10 min, and after one week they received inhalation of honey solution (60% wt/v) for 10 min. Another 12 healthy subjects received inhalation of 10% dextrose for 10 min.

Honey treatment showed a mild reduction of blood pressure compared to no change in another group.

From a time perspective, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was reduced by honey inhalation in hypertensive patients at 60 and 120 min.

After taking into account co and confounders, researchers said, "honey inhalation was safe and effective in reducing...elevated blood pressure in hypertensive patients".

Moreover, in order to obtain more information on honey antihypertensive activity, researchers investigated the aqueous extract obtained from the mixture of the fresh leaf of Persea Americana, stems, and a fresh leaf of Cymbopogon citratus, fruits of Citrus medica and honey on ethanol and sucrose-induced hypertension in rats.

Rats included in the study were divided into eight groups of 6 rats each and daily treated for 5 weeks. The control group received distilled water (1 mL/kg) while rats of groups 2, 3, and 4 received ethanol 40 degrees (3 g/kg/day), 10% sucrose as drinking water, and the two substances respectively.

The remaining groups received additional sucrose and ethanol, the aqueous extract (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg) or nifedipine (10 mg/kg) respectively.

Group treated with ethanol and sucrose showed a significantly (p < 0.001) increased blood pressure and heart rate compared to distilled water treated rats.

Chronic treatment of ethanol and sucrose also exerted a significantly decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, observed by the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and elevated levels of oxidative stress observed by the stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) levels.

However, administration of the aqueous extract or nifedipine prevented all changes caused by chronic ethanol and sucrose, including the hemodynamic, biochemical, oxidative, and histological impairments.

The finding clearly suggested that aqueous extract including honey possess antihypertensive activity by the improvement of biochemical and oxidative status, through its antioxidant property.

Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with other herbs may be considered anti-hypertension functional remedies with no side effects, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Alliin Isolated From Garlic, Reduces the Levels of Triglyceride(TG) and Total Cholesterol(TC), According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton
Fat including cholesterol and triglycerides consists of hydrocarbon molecules.

Cholesterol is the type of fat produced by the liver or from fat intake playing a critical role in the building of strong cell walls, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones, and bile acid to aid digestion in the small intestine.

Accessed cholesterol produced by the liver in a healthy individual is returned to the liver by high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Overexpression of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream has been linked to plaques accumulation on the arterial walls, a major cause of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

The healthy ratio of HDL/LDL cholesterol is any numbers that are less than 1/4.

On the other hand, triglyceride is fat in the blood that comes from the outside source used by the body to convert to energy.

Triglyceride is stored in the fat cells used to produced energy between meals and in the case when food is scarce.

Compared to cholesterol, triglycerides in high levels also associated with the risk of heart disease, particularly in people with high levels of LDL and low levels of HDL.

Evolutionally, fat accumulation is considered a defense mechanism in the human body where excess fat is stored when food is plentiful and release to produce energy when food is scarce.

This defense mechanism has become deadly in Western countries where goods are always plentiful, leading to overweight and obesity in the induction of the onset of various types of chronic disease.

Dr. Karen Kearns, the lead scientist wrote, "Overweight and obesity prevalence was higher in men (43.0% and 16.1%) compared to women (29.2% and 13.4%), respectively. The most prevalent chronic conditions were lower back pain, hypertension, and raised cholesterol. Prevalence of chronic disease generally increased with increasing BMI".

And, "Compared to normal weight persons, the strongest associations were found in obese women for diabetes (RR 3.9, 95% CI 2.5-6.3), followed by hypertension (RR 2.9, 95% CI 2.3-3.6); and in obese men for hypertension (RR 2.1, 95% CI 1.6-2.7), followed by osteoarthritis (RR 2.0, 95% CI 1.2-3.2)".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of triglycerides accumulation, researchers examined the effect of alliin on lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells.

According to tested data, injection of 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP), a food born hepatoxic chloropropanol contaminant significantly increased the intracellular content of triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) at 0.5-2μg/mL.

Furthermore, 1,3-DCP also greatly decreased cyclic AMP (cAMP) level which plays an important role in the regulation of metabolism generally, particularly in fat accumulation in this case.

Moreover, 1,3-DCP also inhibited PKA and AMPK signaling pathways associated with the regulation of cellular energy homeostasis.

Additionally, 1,3-DCP significantly decreased GPR41 and GPR43 expression in brown adipogenesis associated with transfer energy from food into heat.

Collectively, 1,3-DCP enhanced the accumulation of fat in the tissue and inhibited the genes associated with the increase of metabolic efficiency.

Alliin, the most abundant sulfur compound in garlic, reversed all parameters changes caused by 1,3-DCP through its hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.

In other words, alliin protects the body against abnormal lipid deposits caused by 1,3-DCP through its antioxidants, anti-hyperglycemic, and anti-inflammatory effects.

In HepG2 cells exposed to 1,3-DCP, alliin exhibited a significantly decreased increase of triglyceride(TG) and total cholesterol(TC).

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of fat accumulation with no side effect, responding to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol Protects the Kidneys Against Nephrotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are essential bean shape organ of our body, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine.

Kidneys play a critical role in filtering blood with billions of glomeruli by separating the cells of blood from plasma and reabsorb back substances, and secret waste such as urea and ammonium that are stored into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder.

Furthermore, kidneys also process the functions that regulate electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produce hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin, etc.

In the urinary system, the kidney also reabsorbed back substances into the blood, while other wastes, such as urea and ammonium are stored into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by a poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American physician association, long term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.

And people with age over 60 are at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

The most common symptoms of nephrotoxicity decreased urine output, fluid retention, causing swelling in your legs, ankles or feet, weakness, fatigue, and irregular heartbeat.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath, and confusion.
acute nephrotoxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers evaluated the nephroprotective effect of β-sitosterol against nephrotoxicants, using renal function markers, antioxidant and lipid peroxidation status, and inflammatory markers.

The study included male albino Wistar rats that were randomly grouped into four:
* Group 1 was vehicle control rats (0.1% carboxymethyl cellulose [CMC]);

* Group 2 was rats treated with N-diethylnitrosamine (DEN) (200 mg/kg body weight [bw] i.p. on the 15th day) and ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA) (9 mg/kg BW i.p. on 30th and 32nd days);

* Group 3 was rats that received β-sitosterol (20 mg/kg BW in 0.1% CMC, p.o. for 32 days) 2 weeks prior to the exposure to the nephrotoxic; and

* Group 4 was rats that received β-sitosterol alone

According to the chemical analysis, after the experiments were terminated after the 24 h of the last dosage of Fe-NTA, and all the animals were sacrificed,
* All the parameters showed significant changes in DEN and Fe-NTA treated animals.

* β-sitosterol pretreated animals' altered biochemical parameters were restored to near normal.

More precisely, β-sitosterol activated the expression of antioxidant enzymes enhancer Nrf2 gene expression against renal oxidative stress markers.

The administration of β-sitosterol exerted a strong protective effect in biochemical parameters against nephrotoxicity induced rats, according to the histopathological and immunohistochemical observations,

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of obese neral toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
