Beta-Sitosterol Processes Anti-Asthmatic Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Respiratory Disease is a medical condition, that affects the breathing organ and tissues including inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing, etc.

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air and then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung diseases are medical conditions, affecting the upper respiratory tract, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleura and pleural cavity, and the nerves and muscles of breathing.

People with lung diseases have breathing problems, preventing them to get enough oxygen for the body's needs.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization, respiratory diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the world. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are 2 of the most common respiratory disease in the world, affecting 65 million and 334 million people, respectively.

3 million people die from the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) each year, making it the third leading cause of death worldwide. And 14% of 334 million people who suffer from asthma are children.

Long-term smoking is considered one of the leading risk factors for lung diseases. Other risk factors associated with the onset of lung diseases include radon, asbestos, second-hand smoke, and air pollution.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory effect and the underlying molecular mechanisms of β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells.

According to the chemical analysis, β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) and PGE₂ along with the expression of iNOS and COX-2 associated with the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells.

Furthermore, β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6.

Moreover, β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside inhibited the NF-κB activation induced by LPS, which was associated with the abrogation of IκBα degradation and subsequent decreases in nuclear p65 levels, one of the five components that form the NF-κB.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " the β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside inhibited NO and pro-inflammatory productions by down-regulating the gene expression of pro-inflammatory mediators via the negative regulation of the NF-кB pathway in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases such as asthma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Beta-Sitosterol Processes Antimetastatic Property

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth on the body tissue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue and do not exert any symptoms at the early stage.

At the later stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs,.

Metastasis is the process to induce the development of secondary malignant growths at a distance from primary cancer.

Metastatic cancer also shares the characteristics of primary cancer. Breast cancer that spreads to the lung is called metastatic breast cancer, not lung cancer.

According to statistics, in 2018, approximately over1,700,000 cases of cancer were diagnosed worldwide. The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Believe it or not, some metastatic cancer may have an unknown primary origin or CUP, secondary cancer without a primary cancer site.

Anti-metastasis is an action in which substances are used including herbal medicine to stop the cancer cell to infect other healthy tissues a distance away from the primary tumor.

Most cancer drugs used in conventional medicine with the ability to block the migration of cancer cells are considered to process antimetastatic activity.

In other words, anti-metastasis drugs are agents that interfere with all modes of cancer cell migration, compared to conventional cytostatic drugs involved in blocking cancer cell proliferation.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of cancer spreading to other organs and tissues, researchers examined synthesized redox-sensitive heparin-β-sitosterol micelles antimetastatic activity using Doxorubicin (Dox) encapsulated via the dialysis method.

According to the chemical analysis, approximately 89% and 52% of Dox were released after 48h in the presence and absence of reduced glutathione.

bHSC-treated HeLa cells showed a strong hemocompatibility to improve the interaction of bHSC with the cancer cells and antimetastatic effects against cancer cell proliferation and spreading without inducing side effects of toxicity.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of cancer cell spreading, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant Lycopene Inhibits Parameters that Induces Post Myocardial Infarction Complications, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Acute brain infarction is a severe medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local death of the neurons in the brain. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

The exact causes of a blood clot to induce acute brain infarction are unknown. However, trouble with speaking and understanding, confusion, sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in your face, arm, or leg, headache, and trouble with walking are some of the most common symptoms found in patients with post-myocardial infarction.

Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm, or leg, and trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Although, there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. some researchers suggested aging may have a strong and negative implication on acute infarction.

Dr. Amelia Carro, the lead scientist wrote, "Data from 163,140 hospital admissions of Medicare beneficiaries age > or =65 years between 1994 and 1996 with AMI at U.S. hospitals were evaluated for differences in clinical characteristics and mortality across five age-based strata (in years): 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84 and > or =85".

And, "Our data indicate significant age-associated differences in clinical characteristics in elderly patients with AMI, which account for some of the age-associated differences in mortality".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas.

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment o post-heart attack, researchers examined supplementation on cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI).

The study included male Wistar rats assigned randomly into four groups: the sham group (animals that underwent simulated surgery) that received a standard chow (S; n=18), the infarcted group that received a standard chow (MI; n=13), the infarcted group supplemented with lycopene (1 mg of lycopene/kg body weight/day) (MIL; n=16) and the infarcted group supplemented with tomato (MIT; n=16).

At the end of 3 months of the experiment, based on the assay analysis, researchers found that* The groups MIL and MIT showed decreased interstitial fibrosis induced by infarction.

* Tomato-treated group attenuated the hypertrophy induced by MI.

* Lycopene reduced the expression of proteins and pathways associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TGF-β1, NF-κB, and TNF-α respectively, collagen I, and collagen III associated with the initiation of fibrous tissues.

* Most importantly, lycopene also ameliorated the level of ventricular remodeling post-MI.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Lycopene may inhibit the NF-κB signaling pathway thereby reducing the inflammatory response and cardiomyocyte apoptosis post-MI, which could be a key mechanism of lycopene in attenuating ventricular remodeling".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered supplements for the treatment of cardio-remodeling in post-myocardial infarction, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Red Cabbage Inhibits the Onset of Skin Contact Dermatitis, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Contact dermatitis is a skin condition with symptoms of a red, itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an immune overreaction against contact allergens.

The skin is the largest organ of the body containing 3 layers including the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The skin also is the third detoxed organ combined with the liver and kidney to cleanse the body's toxins.

Many chemicals and nonchemical substances have been found to induce such abnormal reactions, including cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry, and plants.

Most cases of contact dermatitis are nonlife-threatening, however, the condition can induce certain discomforts, particularly in people with an allergic reaction and medical conditions.

The skin condition caused by an allergic reaction can be healed within a week or 2. Contact dermatitis can be preventable if the cause is identified.

Most common symptoms of contact dermatitis red, itchy rash on the skin. Some people may also experience more serious symptoms including crusting swelling, burning, or tenderness of the skin.

Some researchers suggested contact dermatitis may be associated with the inflammatory skin condition caused by the production of pro-inflammatory and toxic factors that activated the skin's innate immunity, such as irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

Dr. Freudenberg MA, the lead scientist at the Max-Planck-Institute for Immunobiology, wrote, "Although DC and effector T cells play a protagonistic role in the sensitization and elicitation phase of ACD, respectively, other cell types including keratinocytes, NK cells, mast cells, and B cells contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease"

And, ": In this review, the authors summarize recent findings that identify stress responses and innate immune pathways triggered by contact allergens and review recent data regarding the adaptive T cell response".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem that is crowded with a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the promotion of skin health, researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of methanol extract of B. oleracea var. capitata L. (MEBO) in mice with contact dermatitis (CD) including ear swelling, erythema, and histopathological changes.
According to the results obtained from the tested analysis, topical treatment with MEBO showed significant inhibition of ear swelling and erythema.

Furthermore, MEBO also significantly inhibited epidermal hyperplasia associated with the overdevelopment of a number of cells in the epidermis and immune cell infiltration in the induction of inflammation.

Compared to control, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma, interleukin-6, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 in MEBO-treated mice were significantly lower also compared to those in controls.

However, there is no body weight gain or spleen body weight ratio in the treatment group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These results indicate that cabbage can be used for the treatment of skin inflammation and that its anti-inflammatory activity is closely related to the inhibition of Th1 skewing reactions (associated with pathogenicity or protection from disease)".

Taken altogether, red cabbage may be considered a functional food for the treatment of contact dermatitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant Indicaxanthin Reduces The Risk of Intestinal Motility Disorders, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal motility disorder is a condition associated with abnormal intestinal contractions, such as spasms and intestinal paralysis.

In a healthy individual, intestinal muscles contract and relax in a coordinated, rhythmic fashion that propels food at each stage of digestion. However, in patients with intestinal motility disorders, food passed at each stage is reduced or blocked due to abnormal intestinal muscle motility.

The most common symptoms of intestinal motility disorders are difficulty swallowing, GERD., gas, severe constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and bloating.

In other words, intestinal motility disorders cause a wide range of digestive symptoms.

The most common causes of intestinal motility disorders are associated with the problem of muscle that controls peristalsis or the nerves or hormones that control the muscle's contractions.

Certain diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroparesis, esophageal spasms, diabetes, and Hirschsprung's disease are also linked to the onset of intestinal motility disorders.

Dr. Deane AM, the lead scientist in the examination of conventional treatment of intestinal motility disorders, said, "Gastrointestinal dysmotility causes delayed gastric emptying, enteral feed intolerance, and functional obstruction of the small and large intestine, the latter functional obstructions being frequently termed ileus and Ogilvie syndrome".

And, "While the administration of either metoclopramide or erythromycin is supported by evidence it appears that dual-drug therapy (erythromycin and metoclopramide) reduces the rate of treatment failure...Several drugs, including ghrelin agonists, highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists, and opiate antagonists are being studied in clinical trials. Neostigmine, when infused at a relatively slow rate in patients receiving continuous hemodynamic monitoring, may alleviate the need for endoscopic".

Indicaxanthin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

According to the Università di Palermo, phytochemical Indicaxanthin may process the function that inhibits the risk of abnormal intestinal contractions associated with the ability gut to coordinate muscular activity.

Abnormal intestinal contractions in the gut have been found to induce inflammation and abdominal cramps.

More precisely, indicaxanthin induced inhibitory effects on the abnormally spontaneous mechanical activity gut-associated with an enzyme that causes muscle constriction.

Furthermore, the phosphodiesterases (PDEs) function that regulated contraction and relaxation of smooth musculature induced by the expression of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) was also modulated by the injection of indicaxanthin.

Moreover, administration of indicaxanthin and IBMX, a pan-specific inhibitor of phosphodiesterases also significantly reduced the carbachol-evoked contractions with no side effects.

And, both indicaxanthin and IBMX increased the inhibitory effects of forskolin associated with muscle relaxant effects with no adverse effects.

In other words, Phytochemical indicaxanthin increased both basal and forskolin involved in muscle relaxant activity in mouse ileal muscle by inhibiting the mechanisms associated with motility disorders.

Dr. Baldassano S, the lead scientist said, "indicaxanthin reduces the contractility of ileal longitudinal muscle by inhibition of PDEs and increase of cAMP concentration and raise the possibility of using indicaxanthin in the treatment of motility disorders, such as abdominal cramps".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of motility disorders, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer's disease and Age-Related Cognitive Decline in Vitamin E Deficient Adults

By Kyle J. Norton

Cognition is the process of the brain including the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision making.

Cognitive impairment is a condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. Cognitive impairment can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive impairment is a short-term health problem caused by delirium, an acutely disturbed state of mind due to drugs (toxicity and withdrawal), electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensory input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction or m Myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary.

Chronic cognitive impairment is a permanent medical condition associated with problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at greater risk for the development of dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease.

According to the statistic provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive impairment and these numbers are increasing at an alarming rate.

Sadly, the CDC continued, "An estimated 5.1 million Americans aged 65 years or older may currently have Alzheimer’s disease, the most well-known form of cognitive impairment; this number may rise to 13.2 million by 2050".

The causes of cognitive impairment are unknown. However, researchers suggested that aging, genetically mutated gene inherited from parents, such as Down's Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), autism, persistent mental health problems, together with unhealthy diet and lifestyle are associated with the onset of cognitive impairment.

Furthermore, hormonal imbalances, physical damage to the portion of the brain that is responsible for controlling cognitive function, and substance abuse are also some major causes of the development of the condition.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the improvement of cognitive functioning, researchers determine the difference in blood tocopherol levels between patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or age-related poor cognitive function and health.

According to the examination of the results of 31 articles that were selected for the meta-analysis, patients with AD or age-related cognitive deficits and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) had lower circulatory concentrations of α-tocopherol compared with healthy controls.

Moreover, levels of β-, γ- and δ-tocopherols did not significantly differ between groups of AD and age-related cognitive deficits compared to controls.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "lower α-tocopherol levels have a strong association with AD and MCI supporting evidence for the role of diet and vitamin E in AD risk and age-related cognitive decline".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of AD or age-related cognitive deficits and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) caused by vitamin E deficiency, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Indian Gingsen #Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of Hypercholesterolemia, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary plays a critical role to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients and fluids, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts of cholesterol in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of heart disease, and stroke.

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

The condition is a result caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

People with hypercholesterolemia at the early stage are asymptomatic. However, patients with familial hypercholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US.

In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol. and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the ashwagandha root extract anti hypercholesteremic effects in an animal model.

Selected hypercholesteremic male albino rats were given root powder of WS added to the diet at 0.75 and 1.5 gm/rat/day.

During the experiment, researchers found that the root powder of WS showed a strong anti-hypercholesteremic activity by significant decreasing levels of total lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, in blood plasma.

Furthermore, WS also reduced the levels of cholesterol by a significant increasing plasma HDL-cholesterol levels, HMG-CoA reductase activity and bile acid content of the liver.

Moreover, lipid-peroxidation associated with liver stress was inhibited by WS administration in hypercholesteremic animals, compared to other normal counterparts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " it appeared that WS root powder is also effective in normal subjects for decreasing lipid profiles".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
