According to the chemical analysis, β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) and PGE₂ along with the expression of iNOS and COX-2 associated with the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells.On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory effect and the underlying molecular mechanisms of β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells.
Collectively, researchers wrote, " the β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-glucopyranoside inhibited NO and pro-inflammatory productions by down-regulating the gene expression of pro-inflammatory mediators via the negative regulation of the NF-кB pathway in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells".
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases such as asthma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
