Angelica Sinensis Protects the liver Against Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body and the only organ which can regenerate itself. The liver is the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the liver's healthy functioning against any harmful toxins, including detoxification which is a natural process of our body to maintain the proper function and protect our organs and tissues against toxicity by eliminating toxins accumulated.

When they fail, the toxic accumulations cause a disruption of hormone production, damage the body's detoxification organs and weaken the immune system, leading to hormone imbalance and much chronic illness consequently.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.

There are no exact causes of liver disease. viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, including cancer.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, scientists examined the hepatoprotective effects of polysaccharides-enriched fraction from the root of Angelica sinensis in rodents.

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* Intra-gastric administration of Angelica sinensis polysaccharides-enriched fraction (AP) at the doses of 50 or 75 mg/kg dose-dependently prevented liver toxicity induced by acetaminophen in mice but did not affect the serum acetaminophen concentration.
* AP inhibited the liver stress markers alanine transferase (ALT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and hepatic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activities and glutathione level in the liver.

* In the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage animals, AP showed weak protective activity.

* However, a higher dose of AP inhibited the MDA level without affecting the serum ALT level, the hepatic glutathione level instead while the NOS activity in CCl4 induced liver damage rats.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "These findings suggest that the pathogenic mechanisms of both acetaminophen and CCl4 are different. AP is more effective in the protection against liver damage induced by acetaminophen, which is associated with the glutathione depletion and nitric oxide synthase activation in the liver".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection against liver damage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Inhibits the Onset of Acute Steatohepatitis in Vivos

By Kyle J. Norton

Steatohepatitis is a fatty liver disease caused by inflammation of the liver tissue accompanied by fat accumulation.

A most common form of steatohepatitis is non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an advanced form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that is not caused by excessive alcohol drinking.

Most cases of NASH if untreated can lead to liver scars or building up of scar over time, a condition of liver cirrhosis and one of the most common causes of liver cancer.

Most people with non-inflammatory-alcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic, however, the inflammation caused by non-alcoholic steatohepatitis may induce liver damage, leading to a reduced function of the liver that orchestrates the onset of liver symptoms.

The most common symptoms are abdominal swelling, enlarged blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface, enlarged spleen, red palms, and jaundice.

People with steatohepatitis have been associated with the increased risk of liver failure and liver cancer, due to excessive formation of liver scar tissues, epidemiologically.

According to the statistics, fatty liver affects approximately 25% of the general population worldwide. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is very common in overweight persons.

Researchers do not know the exact cause of steatohepatitis. However, they do know certain medical conditions such as diabetes, being overweight or obese and people with metabolic syndrome, including high blood cholesterol are some most prevalent risks of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that people who are viral hepatitis carriers are also at risk of steatohepatitis.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the ω-3-acid ethyl ester prescription Lovaza effects on acute steatohepatitis.

According to the results of the study,
* In vivo, administration of CMPF to mice before or after high-fat diet feeding at exposures equivalent to those observed in humans increased whole-body lipid metabolism, improved insulin sensitivity, increased beta-oxidation, reduced lipogenic gene expression, and ameliorated steatosis.

* CMPF acutely inhibits Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (Acc) activity in the monitoring of liver enzymatic activity and induces long-term loss of SREBP1c and ACC1/2 expression in lipid metabolism.

* CMPF upregulated the expression of FGF21, which is required for long-term steatosis protection.

Moreover, researchers said, "MPF treatment in mice parallels the effects of human Lovaza™ supplementation, revealing that CMPF may contribute to the improved metabolic effects observed with ω-3 fatty acid prescriptions".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of acute steatohepatitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Gamma-linolenic Acid Reduces the Risk of Non-Ischemic Heart Failure

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart is a four-chambered, hollow muscle and a double-acting pump located in the chest between the lungs is a muscular organ in the human body.

The heart formed an important part of the circulatory system that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body and assist in the removal of metabolic wastes.

Non-ischemic Heart Failure is a type of heart failure that is not associated with ischemic heart failure.

According to the statistic provided by the American Heart Foundation, on average, an American dies of CVD every 38 seconds. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounted for 840,678 deaths in the US in 2016 and the condition also claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined

In 2016, cardiovascular diseases cause the death of 2,303 deaths each day, in the US.
Cardiovascular disease is defined as medical conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, including heart, blood vessels(arteries and veins).

Ischemic heart disease is defined as a condition of reduced blood supply of the heart muscle, as a result of coronary artery disease caused by plaque building up in the arteries.

Heart failure is a medical condition characterized by insufficiently maintaining blood flow to meet the body's needs, inducing symptoms of
* Shortness of breath and excessive tiredness are caused by the congestion in your lungs in the process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
And* Leg swelling is a condition caused by fluid to back up in your lungs and in other parts of your body such as your ankles.

Believe it or not, approximately 600, 000 Canadian are living with heart failure or 16% of the entire population.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-heart diseases activity researchers examined the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on heart failure (HF).

The study included 50 patients with stable non-ischemic HF who underwent CPETs at our hospital.

According to the results of the analysis of the relationships between PUFAs and echocardiographic findings as well as CPET and other test parameters in patients' data.
* Correlations were significantly negative between dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) + arachidonic acid (AA) and heart failure.

* Minute ventilation versus carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO2) slope, were positive between N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and VE/VCO2 slope in heart failure.

* More profoundly, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were not significantly correlated with the CPET parameters.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " Low levels of circulating DGLA+AA and AA among PUFAs were associated with decreased exercise responses in patients with stable non-ischemic HF".

Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of non-ischemic heart failure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Inhibits the Melanoma Brain Metastasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth on the tissue of the specific organ.

Most cases of invasive cancer can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Institue, between n 2011–2015, the number of new cases of cancer is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).

The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year.

Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process without even notice, every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer but less common to other skin cancer as a result of malignancy of melanocytes, which is the cell produced dark pigment for your skin.

Approximately 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. Melanoma tends to spread along the skin in most of the cases, but also can grow down to the deeper layers of the skin. At the later stage, it can spread to distant parts of the body, including organs.

Melanoma brain metastasis is secondary cancer in the brain that causes by the spreading of melanoma.

Approximately, 20% of patients are found to have brain metastasis at the time of diagnosis of metastatic melanoma, and more than 50% develop brain metastasis during the course of the disease.

Brain metastases are a frequent and often deadly problem in patients with advanced melanoma. According to the statistics, patients with melanoma brain metastasis have an average survival of only 4 months.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of cancer spreading, researchers elucidated the effects of β-sitosterol, a well-tolerated and brain-penetrable phytosterol on BRAF-mutant melanoma brain metastases.

According to the results of the differentiation,
* β-sitosterol attenuates melanoma cell growth in vitro and also inhibits brain metastasis formation in vivo.

* The efficacy of β-sitosterol was linked to mitochondrial interference.

* β-sitosterol effectively reduced mitochondrial respiratory capacity, mediated by an inhibition of mitochondrial complex I associated with the levels of oxidative stress that induce apoptosis in tumor cells.

* More importantly, on the large-scale analyses of human melanoma brain metastases, Beta-Sitosterol played a significant role in mitochondrial complex I compared to brain metastases from other cancers.

* The combination of vemurafenib with either β-sitosterol or a functional knockdown of mitochondrial complex I completely abrogated BRAF inhibitor resistance.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "β-sitosterol represents a promising adjuvant to BRAF inhibitor therapy in patients with or at risk for, melanoma brain metastases".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy in a BRAF inhibitor therapy in patients with, or at risk for, melanoma brain metastases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli, the Natural Anti Hyperlipidemic Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million American and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Cholesterol can either be produced by the liver or consumed form the food sources. There are 2 types of cholesterol
*The high-density lipoprotein is also known as "good" cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in a moderate amount.

In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances form plague, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-anti-hyperlipidemia, researchers examined the serum LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering effects of two types of canned beverages containing mixed green vegetables and fruits, with or without broccoli and cabbage (B&C).

The randomized double-blind study design included 77 adult subjects with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia (Forty-nine out of 77 subjects, whose LDL-C levels were greater than or equal to 140 mg/dl and less than 180 mg/dl) were randomly divided into groups either by a placebo sample made from the same materials but without B&C. The subjects were administered 2 cans of 160 g contents/can) per day for 12 weeks.

According to the results of the experiment,
* Serum LDL-C levels in the test group were significantly reduced at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after administration in comparison to the baseline levels (155.7 mg/dl on average).

* The average LDL-C value at 9 weeks was 142.5 mg/dl and the reduction rate was 8.5% compared to serum LDL-C levels in the control group that was not significantly reduced.

* Significant differences(p < 0.05) between the groups were observed in the LDL-C levels at 6 and 9 weeks and also in the total cholesterol levels at 9 weeks.

Collectively, researchers said, " intake of the beverage tested containing B&C is useful for lowering serum LDL-C levels in hypercholesterolemic subjects".

Taken altogether, broccoli used combination with cabbage may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Foods Brassica rapa Suppresses Oxidative Nephrotoxicity in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found in the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.

The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by a poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American physician association, long term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.

And people with age over 60 are at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney damage caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to levels of antioxidants.

Dr. Keiko Hosohata in the examining "Role of Oxidative Stress in Drug-Induced Kidney Injury",
Said, "Because the kidney is exposed to a larger proportion and higher concentration of drugs and toxins than other organs through the secretion of ionic drugs by tubular organic ion transporters across the luminal membranes of renal tubular epithelial cells, and through the reabsorption of filtered toxins into the lumen of the tubule, these cells are at greater risk for injury".

And "In fact, drug-induced kidney injury is a serious problem in clinical practice and accounts for roughly 20% of cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) among hospitalized patients".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined nephroprotective effects of 6-hydroxy-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (6-HMA), which was isolated from the roots of B. rapa, on cisplatin-induced toxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells and in rats with acute renal injury

The study included 16subjects that were randomized, and fifteen subjects completed all visits.

According to the tested analysis, in vitro and Vivo
* The pretreatment of LLC-PK1 cells with 6-HMA ameliorated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity caused by oxidative stress.

* The pretreatment also decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and kidney stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased levels of glutathione (GSH).

* Furthermore, 6-HMA inhibited cisplatin-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression involved in oxidation and inflammation by the binding activity of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), the antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

* Moreover, 6-HMA administered rats showed lower levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and urinary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) associated with kidney damage than cisplatin alone-treated rats in cisplatin-induced renal injury model.

* Additionally, 6-HMA inhibited the cisplatin-induced formation of MDA and GSH depletion and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR).

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " these findings indicate 6-HMA is a major active constituent from the roots of B. Rapa to have a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress.".
Taken altogether, Brassica rapa processed abundantly 6-HMA may be considered supplements for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity,  ending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Legume Pinto Beans (Phaseolus), A Potential Antifungal Health Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated by antibiotics.

A fungus is a primitive organism, including mushrooms, mold, and mildew.found in the air, in the soil, on plants, and in water.

Fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air if you inhale the spores, it may spread to cause a fungal infection that often starts in the lungs or on the skin.

People with a weakened immune system are more likely to infected by fungi, including the fungus Aspergillus which causes lung infection.

Similar to other bacterias, there are millions of different fungal species on Earth, but only about 300 are known to infect people.

Conventionally, a fungal infection also is treated with antibiotics, including topical antifungal ointments or oral medications, depending on the severity of the disease.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the effects of Chinese pinto bean lectin (CPBL), a 58-kDa dimeric glucosamine-binding protein anti-fungal activity.

Pinto bean is also known as common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. It has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

According to the tested analysis of the purified lectin on six fungal species including Phyllosticta citriasiana, Magnaporthe grisea, Bipolans maydis, Valsa mali, Mycosphaerella arachidicola, and Setosphaeria turcica,
* Only the mycelial growth of V. mali was reduced by 30.6 % by the lectin at 30 μM.

* The lectin was able to suppress the proliferation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma HONE-1 cells, with an IC50 of 17.3 μM.

Additional analysis of the lectin activity, researchers wrote, " A few plant lectins demonstrate antifungal activity against V. mali, and not many others have inhibitory effects on HONE-1 cells, CPBL is a distinctive lectin which may be exploited for development into an agent against V. mali and HONE-1 cells".

Taken altogether, Pinto beans may process antioxidant and cytotoxic properties against diseases associated with a fungal and viral infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
