Herbal Ashwagandha Modulates the Immunomodulatory Effects on Colon Cancer Developing

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system included the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.

The immune dysfunction can be classified into
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system. People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections.

Most common symptoms of the underactive immune system are infection including frequent and recurrent pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, meningitis or skin infections and Inflammation and infection of internal organs.

However, blood disorders, such as low platelet counts or anemia and digestive dysfunction are also some of the common symptoms found in patients with the underactive immune system.

* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system that attacks the body tissues.

Dust, mold, pollen, and food over-reaction are some of the most common symptoms of patients with an overactive immune system. However, in severe cases, over the active immune system can attack the body tissues, leading to chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis (MS) and type I diabetes.

According to the BC health link, autoimmune tests may include anti-dsDNA, anti-RNP, anti-Smith (or anti-Sm), anti-Sjogren's SSA and SSB, anti-scleroderma or anti-Scl-70, anti-Jo-1, and anti-CCP. Antibody against cardiolipin also may be tested depending on the type of symptoms.

In other words, if your tested results showed that you have several of these antibodies in high amounts, you may have an autoimmune disease.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) on immunomodulation was tested in experimental azoxymethane-induced colon cancer in an animal model.

The study included Swiss albino mice induced colon cancer by Azoxymethane 15 mg/kg body weight was injected intraperitoneally once a week for 28 days before treatment of Withania somnifera.

According to the tested analysis, Azoxymethane induced the appearance of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the colons of the experimental mice. Furthermore, the biomarker and expression of ACF were found to correlate to the development of colon tumors.

Application of 400 mg/kg body weight of W. somnifera extracts once a week for four weeks on orally Azoxymethane induced colon cancer mice showed a significant effect on immunomodulatory activity by significantly altering the level of leucocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils, immune complexes, and antibody immunoglobulins (Ig) A, G, and M.

In other words, the azoxymethane-induced colon cancer and immune dysfunction were controlled by the application of W. somnifera.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results suggested that the immunomodulatory effects of W. somnifera could be useful in the treatment of colon cancer".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer through its immunomodulatory effects, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Beta-Carotene Protects the Lung Against Acute Respiratory Infections

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs are a pair of organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) with a function to bring fresh oxygen into the body and remove the carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.

Lung protection is an action in which substances, including herbal remedies, are used to protect the lung against injury or damage.

Lung infection that affects your lungs can cause bronchitis if the large airway is infection or pneumonia if the smaller air sacs in the lung are infected.

Acute respiratory infections are an infection caused by viral such as cold may interfere with normal breathing and airways swollen associated with the mucous building up in the nose, windpipe, or lungs.
Most cases of acute respiratory infection in a healthy individual are healed within 1-2 weeks with or without the use of medication

According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.

In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, represented 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.

Comapred to acute lung infection, the exact causes of chronic lung disease are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested being overweight, smoking, family history, smoking are some of the most prevalent factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most common lung diseases in North America including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis.

Out of many risk factors, occupational lung diseases are one of the most challenging in the modern world.

Dr. Sara De Matteis, the lead scientist wrote, "New occupational agents with unknown respiratory health effects are constantly introduced to the market and require periodic health surveillance among exposed workers to detect early signs of adverse respiratory effects".

And, "In addition, the aging workforce, many of whom have pre-existing respiratory conditions, poses new challenges in terms of the diagnosis and management of occupational lung diseases".

β-Carotene is a phytochemical in the class of Carotenes, belonging to the group of Carotenoids (tetraterpenoids), found abundantly in dark, leafy greens and red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetable
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of respiratory infections, researchers examined the relationship of plasma concentrations of six major carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin) in the severity of acute respiratory infections.

The study included 652 non-institutionalized elderly people (> or =60 years old) enrolled via two community-based sampling strategies in the Wageningen area of The Netherlands in 1998-99.

According to the results by analyzing the frequency and severity of episodes during the previous 1 year, i.e. staying in bed, a medical consultation and episode-related medication in a self-reported by means of a questionnaire, the incidence rate ratio of acute respiratory infections at high beta-carotene status was 0.71 (95 % CI 0.54-0.92) compared to low beta-carotene, concentration group.

In other words, a higher amount of dietary beta-carotene intake was inversely associated with the risk of acute respiratory infections.

Interestingly, levels of alpha-Carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin were not related to the incidence or severity of the infections, comapred to beta-carotene.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "elderly people with a high plasma beta-carotene concentration may have a lower occurrence of acute respiratory infections".

Taken altogether, beta-carotene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acute respiratory infections, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-carotene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Indicaxanthin Exerts a Strong Vascular Protective Effect

By Kyle J. Norton

Blood vessels formed part of the circulatory system that transports blood throughout the body. Arteries and veins are the types of blood vessels that carry blood away from or towards the heart, respectively.

The 3 main types of blood vessels are arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body.

Damage of arteries may induce coronary artery disease associated with the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated in the arterial wall.

Most cases of coronary artery disease are associated with cholesterol building up on the arterial wall found in patients with hypercholesterolemia.

The veins that carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.

The capillaries or the smallest blood vessels that have been found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.

Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of the herbal and natural remedy.

Vascular dysfunction associated with dysfunction of large arteries, the microcirculation and endothelium have been found to induce the substantial risk of cardiovascular disease.

Vascular inflammation that causes reduced blood flow to the body due to the changes in the blood vessel walls, including thickening, weakening, narrowing or scarring is also one of the most common cardiovascular risk factors associated with patients with atherosclerosis and hypertension.

Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound that processes protective vascular effects, researchers examined the effect of Indicaxanthin, a natural chemoactive and chemopreventive agent anti-inflammatory activity, against oxLDL-induced endothelial dysfunction.

According to the results of human umbilical vein cord cells (HUVEC) induced human oxLDL, pretreatment of indicaxanthin in a range between 5 and 20 μM, showed significant inhibition of oxLDL-induced cytotoxicity in a concentration-dependent manner.

Circulating vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) to serve as molecular markers of atherosclerosis and predictors of incident CHD were a significant increase and ABCA1gened associated with the regulation of cellular cholesterol was significantly decreased in the human oxLDL group comapred to pretreatment group.

In other words, the phytochemical exerted protective vascular effects against the incidence of atherosclerosis caused by oxLDL through its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory expression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "indicaxanthin as a novel, dietary phytochemicals, able to exert significant protective vascular effects in vitro, at nutritionally relevant concentrations".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a protective vascular remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Beans Inhibit the Onset of Leukemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system.

Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cell is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 American.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. The condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent veggie for the prevention of leukemia, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center evaluated associations between consumption of vegetables, fruits, and meats with AML risk among Texas residents.

According to the results from all participants, 323 adult de novo AML cases and 380 frequency-matched controls, demographic and food frequency questionnaires, overall consumed the darkest green vegetables, including green beans significantly decreased AML risk, comapred to significantly increased among greatest consumers of red meat.

Among women, consumption was in the highest quartile of dark-green vegetables had a relative odds ratio of 0.28 comapred to the lowest quartile.

In other words, intake of dark-green vegetables such as green beans have reduced risk leukemia only in women comapred to men in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Based on these findings, interventions can be developed to modify intake of specific dietary components to reduce cancer risk".

Taken altogether, dark-green vegetables such as green beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of leukemia in women, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric, the Natural Prevention and Treatment of Colitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a condition associated with inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.

There is no exact cause of colitis. Certain risk factors such as colon infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis have been found to increase the risk of the onset of the condition.

Most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the types, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Types of colitis according to the  Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, are including
microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.

Epidemiologically, people with untreated colitis may experience complications of

* Congenital abnormalities
Women who are pregnant with Ulcerative colitis are associated with significantly increased risk of some selected congenital abnormalities (limb deficiencies, obstructive urinary, and multiple congenital abnormalities) according to the birth outcomes in women with ulcerative colitis examined in a nationwide.

* Nutritional deficiency
Malnutrition, particularly protein-energy malnutrition and vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies, as well as dysregulation of the intestinal microbiota, are common features of IBD.

Conventionally, besides treating colitis with antibiotics, certain medications also are prescribed to improve the symptoms and quality of life of the patients, inclduing anti-diarrheal medications.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined the effects of novel gut health product (GHP), an encapsulation of asafoetida (ASF) and CUR complex used as a carrier agent to encapsulate bioactive components for the treatment of colitis.

According to the rat model of 5%, dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced UC, treatment of GHP significantly attenuated the disease activity index, colitis score, histopathological changes, and myeloperoxidase activity.

Furthermore, GHP also demonstrated significant protective effects against DSS induced colitis.

Additionally, also in an animal model of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis, a specific, curcumin preparation containing essential turmeric oils (ETO-curcumin) compared to standard curcumin at three specific doses (0, 5, 25 or 50 mg/kg), both ETO and standard curcumin treatments provided protection against DSS-induced inflammation.

However, according to the tested assays, ETO-curcumin improved disease activity index (DAI) dose-dependently, compared the anti-inflammatory efficacy of standard curcumin remained constant.

In other words, ETO-curcumin was more superior in the expression of anti-inflammatory efficacy compared to standard curcumin.

Moreover, ETO-curcumin displayed anti colitis activity in the colon by exerting anti-inflammatory cytokines including IL-10 and IL-11 as well as FOXP3.

Collectively, Dr. Toden S., the lead scientist, wrote at the final report, " the combined treatment of curcumin and essential turmeric oils provides superior protection from DSS-induced colitis than curcumin alone, highlighting the anti-inflammatory potential of turmeric".

Taken altogether, turmeric plus essential turmeric oils may be considered supplements for the prevention of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry Improves the Ratio of Gut Microbiota

By Kyle J. Norton

Gut microbiota is a complex community with over trillion microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts.

According to the ESMN, the microbiota can weight up to 2 kg, including 1/3 of gut microbiota found in most people, comapred to 2/3 that are specific to individuals depending on geography, environment, and lifestyle.

In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.

A balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning and modulation of the immune function.

Use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

Unhealthy gut microbiota has been found to
* Decrease the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* Increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reduce nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obese complication.

* Increase the risk of control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead to bad neurobehaviors.

Further, the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota functions also alters immune homeostasis, leading to the onset of autoimmune disorders which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases.

Compared to probiotics, the prebiotics is compound in food that induces the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.

In other definition, it is a special form of dietary fiber that acts as a fertilizer that promotes the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

In the gastrointestinal tract, prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.

In other words, prebiotics raises the levels of healthy bacteria against bad bacteria.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the promotion of digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of cranberries' impact on gut microbiota.

The randomized, double-blind, cross-over, controlled design trial included a total of 11 healthy adults consumed for 5 days each a control diet (animal-based diet (meats, dairy products, and simple sugars) plus 30 g/day placebo powder) and a cranberry diet (animal-based diet plus 30 g/day freeze-dried whole cranberry powder).

According to the tested analysis of the stool, urine, and blood samples, compared to the pre-control diet, control diet modified 46 taxonomic clades in the gut, including an increase in the abundance of Firmicutes and decrease in Bacteroidetes and increased bacteria-derived deoxycholic acid and decreased acetate and butyrate in stool

In other words, the control diet induces a significant change of gut microbiotas by favoring the "bad" organisms.

Comapred to the post control diet, the cranberry diet modified 9 taxonomic clades, including a decrease in the abundance of Firmicutes and an increase in Bacteroidetes in the flavor of the good organisms in the gut.

Furthermore, cranberry promoted the balancing ratio of gut microbiotas by attenuating control diet-induced increase in secondary bile acids and decrease the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and increase urinary anthocyanins and bacterially derived phenolic acids.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "an animal-based diet altered the microbiota composition to a less favorable profile, increased carcinogenic bile acids, and decreased beneficial SCFA. Cranberries attenuated the impact of the animal-based diet on microbiota composition, bile acids, and SCFA, evidencing their capacity to modulate the gut microbiota".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the promotion of gut health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Turmeric Blocks the Proliferation of Endometrial Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of the chronic disease characterized by cells growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the body tissue of the specific organ.

Over time, after growing in size through unlimited division, the tumor can spread to other tissues and organs in the body via lymph or blood.

Endometrium, the inner lining of women uterus is very susceptible to hormone change, particularly in the stages of the menstrual cycle.

Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer that starts in the cells on the surface of the endometrial inner lining of the uterus caused by the alternation of cells DNA. Endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

In the US, according to statistics, the average age of women diagnosed with endometrial cancer is 60. Endometrial is cancer is more common in white women, but black women diagnosed with endometrial cancer are more likely to die from it.

There are more than 600,000 women are endometrial cancer survivors in the US today. In 2019, approximately 61,880 new cases of cancer the uterus (uterine body or corpus) will be diagnosed and this cancer will cause the death of 12,160 women.

Accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, most common symptoms of endometrial cancer are
* Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Vaginal bleeding between period within inappropriate amounts of blood flow should be checked with the doctor as soon as possible. The symptom may be caused by the expansion of overgrowth of pre-cancer uterine lining cells due to infection or breaking off the endometrial capillaries or blood vessels.

* Increase amount of vaginal discharge
An increase in the amount of vaginal discharge accompanied by abnormal odor or pain, itching, or burning sensation may be caused by infection or inflammation.

* Painful urination
Painful urination, most of the time is caused by infection of the urinary tract that affects the bladder in emptying, but sometimes it can be caused by infectious diseases.

* Pain during sex
Painful during most of the time is caused by vestibulitis and vaginismus sex, but in some cases, it can be caused by cancer or other reproductive diseases.

* Pain in the abdomen
There are many reproductive diseases can cause pain in the pelvis, such as appendicitis, salpingitis, uterine descensus,.. but it can be caused by the early stage of endometrial cancer.

* Swelling or lump in the pelvis
Swelling can be caused by inflammation of sexual transmitting virus or infection by bacteria. The lump may be caused by abnormal cells growth of the uterine lining or reproductive tissue.

*Anemia
Anemia may be caused by chronic loss of blood due to prolonged or heavy abnormal menstrual bleeding.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined the anti-metastatic effect and molecular mechanism of curcumin in endometrial carcinoma (ECd ) of curcumin isolated from turmeric.

According to the assays carried out in EC cell lines,
*In vitro, curcumin inhibited EC cell migration and invasion.

* Curcumin treatment for 24 hours, decreased the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

* Futhermore curcumin for 24 hours treatment also inhibited the protease activities associated with metastatic potential in EC cell lines.

* Curcumin treatment exerted anti-metastatic effects by blocking the overexpression of pathways involved in cancer cell growth.
