Turmeric Protects the Nerves Against the Onset of Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerves damage, ranging from pain and numbness in your legs and feet to problems with your digestive system.

Most cases of diabetic neuropathy are involved in diabetics who have a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart.

Diabetic neuropathy can be classified into 4 main types, including.
* Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms.

* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs and eyes.

* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs.

* Mononeuropathy, or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso) or leg.

The exact causes of diabetic neuropathy are totally depending on the type of neuropathy. However, damage of nerves and blood vessels in the affected area has been found to induce by over time, uncontrolled high blood sugar.

In other words, diabetic neuropathy is preventable by keeping the blood glucose in the healthy range.

Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM in the article "the best diet for diabetic neuropathy" wrote, "
(By examing) people eating different diets found that nine months or more on a strict plant-based diet appeared to remove the trans fat from their bodies (or at least their butts). Their pain, however, didn’t take nine months to get better—it got better in days".

In the explanation of the results, the researcher continued, "More likely, it was due to an improvement in blood flow. “[N]erve biopsies in diabetics with severe progressive neuropathy…have shown small vessel disease within the nerve.” There are blood vessels within our nerves that can get clogged up too. The oxygen levels in the nerves of diabetics were found to be lower than even the levels of de-oxygenated blood".


Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy researchers examined the turmeric antioxidant property, anti-inflammatory, CNS depressant effect, antibacterial and antifungal property.

According to the results of the experiment, turmeric inhibited the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy by improving the antioxidant in the reduction of the level of oxidative stress associated with the occurrence of the present complication.

Furthermore, turmeric also enhanced the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity against the spread of infection.

In other words, turmeric inhibited diabetic neuropathy through a number of mechanisms involved in the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity.

In order to review more information about turmeric effect, researchers investigated Nishamalaki (NA), a combination of Curcuma longa and Emblica officinalis in the prevention of diabetic neuropathy.

The study included diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic Wistar rats under treatment of 12 weeks.

Selected rats were randomly divided into group I (Control) vehicle treated consists of 6 rats and 
group II-VII Diabetic Control, NA low dose, NA High dose, Glibenclamide, Pioglitazone and Epalrestat respectively.

Diabetes-induced in 36 Wistar rats with Streptozotocin (STZ) (35mg/kg) intraperitoneally followed by High Fat High Fructose diet. After confirmation of the development of diabetes; rats divided into six groups as the aforementioned division.

Compared to other treatment groups, Nishamalaki (NA) not only controlled hyperglycemia and reduced lipid levels but also effectively prevented the development of diabetic neuropathy.

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicine may be considered supplements for the prevention of diabetic neuropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betanin, the Potent Anti Prostate Cancer Remedy

Prostate cancer is a medical condition associated with cell growth disorderly in the tissue of the prostate.

The prostate is a reproductive gland in men that have shape and size of a walnut located between the bladder and the penis found in front of the rectum.

The gland has a unique function in the making of prostate fluid, one of the components of semen.

Prostate cancer is one of the slowest growth of cancer in men. Prostate cancer may take years to develop before affecting the patients with symptoms.

Most cases of prostate cancer are found in older men. However,
The disease also affects men before the ages of 40.

Believe it or not, about 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. According to the statistics, about 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

In the US, approximately 1,700,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. Prostate cancer also causes the death of 609,640 patients.

The 5-year survival rate for diagnosed at local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%. 

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested the widespread prostate cancer over the past few decades may correlate to the promotion of a high-fat diet in the US.

Dr. Amir Bagheri, the lead scientists in the cancer team wrote, "Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer with a high mortality rate".

And, "After adjustment for potential confounders, a healthy dietary pattern was associated with decreased risk of prostate cancer (highest versus lowest tertile OR:0.24; 95% CI: 0.07-0.81; trend p: 0.025). An unhealthy dietary pattern was related to increased risk of prostate cancer(highest versus lowest tertile OR:3.4; 95% CI: 1.09-10.32; trend p: 0.037)".

The findings strongly suggested that men who follow the Western diet pattern are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer compared to those who do not.

Betanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find an effective compound for the treatment of prostate cancer, researchers compared the cytotoxic effect of the red beetroot extract with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) in the androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells (PC-3).

According to the tested assays, both doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited similarly a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect in the two cancer cell lines.

The cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower when compared to doxorubicin, however, the extract continued to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells by 3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days at the concentration of 29 µg/ml, compared to those of doxorubicin, at the same concentration level.

In further analysis, researchers found that the anti-prostate cancer effects of beetroot extract were attributed to the presence of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent in the exhibition of cytotoxicity. 

Dr. Kapadia GJ, the lead scientists suggested the beetroot extract (B) when used alone or in combination with doxorubicin (D) may process chemopreventive potentials to mitigate the toxic side-effects of the latter.

In order to reveal more information of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) anti-cancer activity researchers examined the beetroot extract (B), approved by Food and Drug Administration and European Union as red food color E162 against cancers.

In pancreatic (PaCa), breast (MCF-7) and prostate (PC-3) tumor cells of human origin, D showed an overall positive reduction in drug concentration when combined with B in its cytotoxicity profile.

The synergistic cytotoxicity was best when the B:D ratio of 1:5 was used in PaCa cells at IC50, IC75, and IC90 dose levels.

The findings strongly supported the potential use of red beetroot extract-doxorubicin combination in treating human prostate cancer.

In other words, red beetroot extracts not only processed the potential to improve the anti-cancer effects of doxorubicin through reduced volume used in prostate cancer treatment but also inhibited the doxorubicin's adverse effects.

Taken altogether, betanin used alone or combined with other medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Protects the Inner Lining of Colon Against Colitis

Colitis is a medical condition associated with the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.

The causes of colitis can be results of infection, inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most common systems of colitis are total depending on the types of condition, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Some patients with colitis also experience symptoms of fever, chills, fatigue, dehydration, eye inflammation.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined whether long-term dietary supplementation with pineapple (supplied as juice) could decrease colon inflammation in neoplasia in Il10(-/-) mice with chronic colitis, compared to bromelain derived from the stem.

The experiment included colitis Il10(-/-) mice induced by exposure to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug piroxicam followed by supplemented with fresh vs. boiled pineapple juice or bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain) from the stem for up to 6 months.

During the study, daily treatment of fresh juice had a decreased histologic colon inflammation scores and a lower incidence of inflammation scores, compared to those treated with bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain).

Futhermore, both treatments showed fewer neoplastic lesions/colon. However, fresh juice lower incidence of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia by 35% compared to 66% of those treated with bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain).

According to the flow cytometric analysis of murine splenocytes in vitro, fresh pineapple juice demonstrated a proteolytic removal of cell surface molecules that can affect leukocyte trafficking and activation, compared to those treated with bromelain purified.

The finding strongly supported the long-term use of pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes for the treatment of inflammatory induction of colitis.

Dr. Hale LP, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "long-term dietary supplementation with fresh or unpasteurized frozen pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes is safe and decreases inflammation severity and the incidence and multiplicity of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia in this commonly used murine model of inflammatory bowel disease".

Taken altogether, pineapple (supplied as juice) processed a high amount of bioactive compound bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Plant-Based Alliin, the Potential Anti Ovarian Cancer Phytochemical

Ovarian cancer is a chronic and medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the ovary.

Most cases of ovarian cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the ovary before spreading to the deeper layers to form a tumor.

In the very early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progression, patients may experience symptoms shared commonly with other types of cancer accompanied by specific symptoms of abdominal bloating or swelling, discomfort in the pelvis area, changes in bowel habits, such as constipation.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

A woman risk of ovarian cancer is 1 in 78. and the risk of the lifetime chance of dying from ovarian cancer is about 1 in 108.

The five-year relative survival rate for all types and stages of ovarian cancer is 47 percent, Cancer diagnosed at the early stage have a 5-year survival rate of over 72%.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not known. However, according to the epidemiological studies genetics preposition such as  BRCA1 and BRCA2, family and history of cancer or endometriosis, aging, reproductive history, and infertility and obesity are some of the prevalent factors involved in the onset of ovarian cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society in the evaluation of the risk of ovarian cancer in women who are never being pregnant or giving birth wrote, "Women who have never been pregnant have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who have been pregnant".

And, "Researchers think that the lower risk may be because the hormones that are present during pregnancy have a protective effect. It is possible that the higher risk in women who have never been pregnant is linked to the factors that may make it difficult for her to become pregnant".

In other words, women who have at least one pregnancy are at a lower risk of ovarian cancer compared to women who do not.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of ovarian cancer without inducing adverse effects, researchers examined the efficacy of preparation including chemical conjugate between daidzein and the garlic enzyme alliinase.

According to the tested assays, the conjugate specifically bound to ovarian cancer cells and upon addition of the prodrug alliin by inducing the cytotoxic allicin molecules in killing the cancer cells.

In vivo, the preparation showed a targeting and antitumor effect confirmed by NIR and bioluminescence imagine in the luciferase-expression of ovarian cancer cells. 

Treatment of ovarian tumor-bearing mice with daidzein-alliinase and alliin effectively attenuated tumor progression during the first 12 days.

Compared to placebo, only small individual foci of luminescence at the site of tumor cells inoculation was found in the treatment group, according to autopsy.

Interestingly, the preparation did not reveal any additional foci of carcinoma or signs of toxicity, according to the histological examination of organs and tissues.

In other words, the chemical conjugate between daidzein and the garlic enzyme alliinase induced ovarian cancer cells apoptosis through its cytotoxic effects without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Based on the findings researchers wrote in the final report, "the targeted alliinase conjugates in the presence of alliin, generated therapeutically effective levels of allicin which were capable of suppressing tumor progression of intraperitoneal ovarian cancer in an animal model".

Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Enhances the Gut Microbiota for Healthy Aging

Aging is the natural and biological process of growing older.

You can not stop the aging clock, but, you can delay the progression by taking some preventive actions, including living a healthy lifestyle accompanied by moderate exercise.

Healthy aging refers to the creation of a series of conditions that allow the aging population to live functionally without affected by serious chronic diseases or medical conditions (that are well managed).

The World Health Organization in the definition of healthy aging wrote, "healthy aging as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age” and "Functional ability is about having the capabilities that enable all people to be and do what they have reason to value".

In other words, healthy aging must comprise all the mental and physical capacities such as the ability to walk, think, see, hear and remember, particularly in bathing, dressing, and other independent living skills, such as shopping and housework. 

Dr. Ruth Elaine Nieuwenhuis-Mark in the study of healthy aging as a disease wrote, "A popular theory in the aging literature since the early 1990s is the socioemotional selectivity theory (SST; Carstensen, 1992). SST was put forward as an attempt to explain the so-called “paradox of aging” which refers to the finding that while physical health tends to decline as we age subjective well-being may be maintained or even improve (Diener and Suh, 1998)".

And, "Focusing on normal aging as a disease could, therefore, be seen as a step-back for aging research rather than a move forward. Aging-as-disease proponents would argue however that their focus is on improving quality of life in our final years, not on increasing our lifespans per se".


Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers in an aim to a natural compound which processes antiaging property examined the effects of bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption in healthy aging and intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity, through regulating the gut microbiota in aging rats.

The study included aging rats fed with the medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract (20 mg per kg bw per day) in the regulation of the intestinal function.

Consumption of the extract showed strong activity in the gut by allowing the bacteria beneficial in the intestine (Aspergillus oryzae, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridiaceae-1, the Bacteroidales-S24-7-group, and the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group) to grow, and inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria (Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota).

However, high-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption was found to induce the negative effect in alternating some intestinally beneficial bacteria.

Furthermore, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption also decreased the activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down food correlated to the changes in bacterial composition, short-chain fatty acids and the intestinal mucosal barrier.

In other words, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption improved the digestive function without affecting the digestive enzymes activity which has been found in low levels in people with the digestive problem including the aging population.

Dr. Li J, the lead scientists said, " bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

The finding suggested that bilberry anthocyanin extract has a significant anti-aging effect by optimizing the function of the digestive system through wide range mechanisms, including bacterial composition.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered an anti-aging remedy, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The wound can be internal or external. It is a cut or open of skin or injury of tissues caused by the physical impacts.

Human all have the experience of an open wound at some point in their life. Most wounds are minor. However, if the opening wound that lasts more than 20 minutes and causes a loss of a large pool of blood can be an emergency.

Taken altogether, honey processed a high amount of flavanol may be considered a functional remedies for the promotion of wound healing with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke Regulates Insulinemic Response

Insulin response is a process of your body that react to the dietary intake.

Insulin produced by the pancreas is a hormone that binds the insulin receptors in the promotion of cell of the intestines to convert glucose to energy for the body needs.

Acute insulin response used as the predictor of types 2 diabetes by diagnosed both normal fasting and 2-h plasma glucose concentrations.

Compared to a healthy individual with normal insulin response, most patients of prediabetes and diabetes have elevated fasting and 2 hours of plasma glucose concentration.

There are many risk factors associated with the abnormal insulinemic response. However, some researchers suggested that the gradual dying of the beta cells of pancreas and insulin receptors sites clogging-up by cholesterol are 2 of the major causes that affect the insulin expression.

Some researchers suggested that abnormal insulin response may be correlated to the widespread of obesity that leads to insulin resistance in the Western world.

Dr. Olga T. Hardy, in the evaluation of the causes of insulin resistance underlying obesity wrote,
"The association between obesity and insulin resistance is an area of much interest and enormous public health impact".

And, "Visceral adiposity is correlated with the accumulation of excess lipid in the liver and results in cell-autonomous impairment in insulin signaling. Visceral adipose tissue is also prone to inflammation and inflammatory cytokine production, which also contribute to impairment in insulin signaling".

The results strongly suggested if you are obese, your risk of insulin resistance increased substantially compared to overweight or healthy weight individuals.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential natural ingredient for the modulation of insulinemic response, researchers investigate the impact of the supplementation of a pre-biotic compound [Jerusalem artichoke meal (JAM)] on the glycaemic and insulinemic response in healthy, non-obese warm-blooded horses.

The study included 6 adult mares fed with crushed oat grains (1 g starch/kg bwt per day) and meadow hay (2 kg/100 kg bwt per day) together with either 0.15 g fructooligosaccharides and inulin (FOS+INU)/kg bwt per day via commercial JAM or maize cob meal without grains as control (CON) in 2 × 3-week periods according to a crossover design.

According to the sample collected at the postprandial (PP) time points (-60, 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 300 min), and the plasma glucose and serum insulin levels, JAM vs. CON did not change the PP peak of glucose or insulin (glucose: 6.3 ± 0.40 vs. 7.0 ± 0.87 mmol/l.

However, following JAM feeding, glucose and insulin levels declined more rapidly until 240 min PP compared to animal fed with CON.

The finding suggested that JAM exerted a significant effect on postprandial (PP) glucose and insulin levels on and after the time points of 240 min. 

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information JA insulinemic response, researchers compared the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus Linne, HTL) and chungkookjang (CKJ; fermented soybeans) in energy and glucose metabolism.

The study included rats divided into partially pancreatectomized (Px) diabetic rats, and sham-operated non-diabetic control rats and all fed high-fat diets. Additionally, diabetic rats were sub-divided into an untreated diabetic control group and those fed with 5% HTL, 5% CKJ or 5% HTL+5% CKJ for 8 weeks. HTL+CKJ treatment reduced visceral fat without modulating energy intake compared to diabetic control.

According to the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic assay, rats treated HTL, HTL+CKJ showed an improvement in glucose tolerance, compared to the diabetic normal-control group.

CKJ and CKJ+HTL but not HTL, injection groups increased first and second phase insulin secretion compared to that of diabetic-control.

Moreover, the glucose infusion rates (mg/kg bw/min) and hepatic insulin sensitivity were increased and  CKJ+HTL (13.5), but not HTL (9.4) or CKJ (9.5) alone, and HTL and CKJ+ HTL decreased hepatic glucose compared to diabetic control.

Dr. Yang HJ, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "HTL and CKJ enhanced glucose tolerance in different manners, and exhibited partially additive and complementary effects by reversing insulin resistance and enhancing β-cell function in diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with another herbal remedy may be considered functional food for the enhancement of insulinemic response against the onset of diabetes, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
