Bilberry, the Potential Anti Liver Cancer Herbal Remedy, According to PubMed

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the treatment of liver cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA which normally begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

If you experience some symptoms of the above, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of liver cancer.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to overexpression of overweight and obese of the population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

There are numbers of risk factors other than those mentioned above associated with the onset of liver cancer such as male, ethnicity, hepatitis viral carriers.

However, most people with some of the above risk factors have never developed liver cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity may be one of the major risk factors involved the onset of the disease.

Dr. Aleksandrova K, the lead scientist in the article of obesity and liver cancer said, "Obesity and related metabolic disorders have become globally prevalent posing a challenge for the chronically damaged liver and predisposing the development and progression of cancer".

And, "Accumulating evidence has established an association between higher body mass index as an indicator of general obesity and a higher risk of primary liver cancer. The associations are stronger in men, in patients with underlying liver disease and in white ethnic groups. Abdominal obesity, weight gain in adult life and metabolic factors related to visceral fat accumulation were also suggested as important risk factors for liver cancer".

The results clearly suggested that if you are obese, your risk of liver cancer is increased substantially, compared to non-obese individuals.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer investigated the protective effect of bilberry extracts (BBE) and enzymatically modified isoquercitrin (EMIQ) on the hepatocarcinogenic process involving oxidative stress responses.

Rat selected to the study was injected to introduce the two-stage hepatocarcinogenesis in N-diethylnitrosamine-initiated and piperonyl butoxide (PBO).

Co-administration of BBE or EMIQ suppressed these effects with the reductions of GST-P(+) foci (area) to 48.9-49.4% and Ki-67(+) cells proliferation to 55.5-61.4% of the PBO-injected cases.
Neither BBE nor EMIQ alone decreased microsomal reactive oxygen species induced by PBO.

Co-administration of BBE and EMIQ decreased the incidences of phospho-PTEN(-) foci which plays a critical role in enhancing malignant proliferation and invasion abilities of liver cancer cells, to 59.8-72.2% and Smad4(-) foci to 62.4-71.5% in the promotion of liver cancer of the PBO-promoted cases.

Furthermore, injection also BBE also suppressed the incidence of phospho-Akt substrate(+) involved liver cancer cell survival to 75.2-75.7% of the PBO-promoted cases.

The finding strongly suggested that co-treatment with BBE or EMIQ suppressed cell proliferation activity of preneoplastic liver cells.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about bilberry anti-liver cancer activity, researchers examined the anthocyanins cancer chemopreventive properties in preclinical models.

In this study, anthocyanins and their metabolites were analyzed in the urine of two patients with colorectal liver metastases.

A single dose of 1.88 g standardized bilberry extract (mirtoselect) via either nasogastric or nasojejunal tube intra-operatively during liver resection showed that there were more anthocyanins and metabolites in the urine of the patient who received mirtoselect via the stomach than via the jejunum.

These results suggested that bilberry extract (mirtoselect) via nasojejunal tube intra-operatively exerted anti-liver cancer effects without reducing the expression of anthocyanins, as the stomach is the predominant site for anthocyanin absorption.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of  liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, Better Than Over the Counter Medicine for Treatment of Acute Cough in Children,

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food which processes a significant activity in reducing risk and treatment of acute coughing in children with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Coughing can be a natural and reflex reaction to expel phlegm from the airway or a result of viral and bacterial infection of the upper airway.

A cough that lasts less than three weeks is considered an acute cough.

A chronic cough is a medical condition that lasts more than 3 weeks. In children, the condition can be caused by allergies and sinusitis, asthma, whooping cough, cystic fibrosis, aspiration, acid reflux and a blockage in the airway.

Most common causes of an acute cough are cold and flu. However, the chronic condition in adults can be the results of smoking, sinus infection, allergic rhinitis, and diseases associated with upper airway dysfunction, including asthma, chronic bronchitis and long-term use of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Most common symptoms of coughing in children are accompanied by the itchy throat, runny nose, watery eyes, sore throat, or rash.

Most parents use over the counter medicine for the treatment of acute coughing in children such as antitussives and expectorants

However, according to the warning from the FDA, warns that children younger than 12 shouldn’t take codeine products to treat pain or cough because of the risk of developing potentially life-threatening breathing problems.

"The FDA recommends against the use of codeine in youths ages 12 through 18 who are obese or have conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (blocked airflow during sleep) or severe lung disease. These risk factors can increase their chances of developing serious breathing problems when taking these medications".

Therefore, if your child experiences severe coughing, you may want to check your doctor before applying any over the counter medicine. Most cases of acute coughing in children are recovered within a few days.

Please noted that there’s no cure for the common cold caused by viral infection. You will get better on your own in a week or two without needing medications and your child will get better on their own in a week or two without the need for medications.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of acute coughing accepted by children without inducing any side effects, researchers examined the effectiveness of honey for an acute cough in children in ambulatory settings.

The study includes the searching of available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing honey, given alone, or in combination with antibiotics, versus nothing, placebo or other over-the-counter (OTC) cough medications to participants aged from two to 18 years for an acute cough in ambulatory settings.

Out of hundreds of studies reviewed by the researchers, only 2 studies were selected for the review.

Compared to dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine and 'no treatment' on symptomatic relief of a cough using the 7-point Likert scale. honey was much better medicine than no treatment in reducing the frequency of a cough and exerted similar or better effects to those of over counter medicine.

However, mild adverse events were found in seven children (9.3%) from the honey group and two (2.7%) from the dextromethorphan group.

After taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Oduwole O. the lead scientist said, "There was no significant difference between honey versus dextromethorphan or honey versus diphenhydramine".

Futhermore, in the concerns of the side effects of honey and over the counter medicine, researchers examine the effects of two kinds of Iranian honey with diphenhydramine (DPH) on nocturnal pediatric coughs and the sleep quality of children and their parents.

A total of 87 patients included in the study were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: Group 1, Honey type 1 (Kimia Company, Iran) (n = 42), Group 2, Honey type 2 (Shahde-Golha, Iran) (n = 25), and Group 3, DPH (n = 20).

Each group received double doses of the respective treatments on two successive nights, researchers indicated that
* Honey type 1 was superior to DPH in improving all aspects of coughs, except the frequency,

* Honey type 2 was more effective than DPH in improving all aspects of coughs, except the sleep quality of the child.

* There was no significant difference between Honey type 1 and 2 in any aspects of cough relief.

After examing the standard validated questionnaire completed by the parents before and after treatment.

Dr. Ayazi P, the lead author wrote in the final report, " honey may provide better cough relief than DPH in children and improve the sleep quality of children and their parents".

By comparing the above studies, there is no doubt that honey may be used for the treatment of acute cough in children.

Ginger, the Natural Anti Oxidative Stress Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake one or 2 slices of ginger daily and regularly may have a strong effect in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes in the body against the onset of oxidative stress, scientists found.

Oxidative stress is a result of the overexpression of free radicals, compared to the levels of antioxidant in the body.

Free radicals are a highly reactive and unstable atom with the unpaired electron on the outer ring of the molecules, therefore, in order to become stable, they must donate or steal an electron from other stable molecules, leading to the chain activity that can not be stopped until they are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

There are many factors associated with the production of free radicals, including the food we eat, the medicines we take, the air we breathe and the water we drink.

In other words, free radical can be generated by alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

Some researchers suggested the prolonged presence of oxidative stress can cause damage to the cells, proteins, and alteration of DNA, leading to chronic diseases.

Dr. Eiichiro Ichiishi and colleagues in the concern of the effects of oxidative stress on the risks of diseases showed that oxidative stress not only has a strong implication in the development of diseases but also affects the outcome throughout the course of organ transplantation.
Additionally, the team wrote, "Kidney ischemia/reperfusion injury emerges in various clinical settings as a great problem complicating the course and outcome".

"Xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA) is a genetic disorder in DNA nucleotide excision repair (NER) with severe neurological disorders, in which oxidative stress and disturbed melatonin metabolism may be involved".

"Renal transplantation has been considered the best therapeutic option for end-stage renal disease,...determine the effect of renal transplantation on the evolution of oxidative DNA status,".

"Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor for the development or deterioration of Graves' ophthalmopathy. Smoke-induced increased generation of reactive oxygen species may be involved".

These results indicated the important roles of antioxidants which inhibited the oxidative stress before they can cause a wide range of damage to the human body.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find the best possible antioxidative stress natural ingredient or whole food, researchers examined the protective effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) extract on IL-1β-mediated oxidative stress and mitochondrial apoptosis in C28I2 human chondrocytes.

The cells were pretreated with 5 and 25 μg/mL ginger extract for 24 h, followed by incubation with IL-1β (10 ng/mL) for 24 h.

At the and of the study, ginger extract demonstrated a significant effect in the inhibition of IL-1β-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lipid peroxidation.

Ginger extract pretreatment also remarkably increased the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes.

The elevated levels of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and caspase-3 involved cells apoptosis were also normalized by the application the of ginger extract.

The finding clearly indicated ginger extract could considerably reduce IL-1β-induced oxidative stress and consequent mitochondrial apoptosis as the major mechanisms of chondrocyte cell death and the efficacy was attributed to its antioxidant activity.

In pulmonary abnormalities tested mice induced by chronic ethanol exposure, researchers evaluated whether ginger extract mitigated pulmonary abnormalities induced by ethanol in rats.

The study included male Wistar rats divided into the control group, the ethanol group, and the ethanol plus ginger extract group.

Ethanol group after six-week of treatment increased the proliferation of lung cells, and induced fibrosis, inflammation, and leukocyte infiltration.

The levels of -hydroxydeoxyguanosine, NADPH oxidase, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein were also found to increase substantially in the ethanol-treated group.

Application of ginger extract normalized such changes by inhibiting the oxidative DNA damage and oxidative stress.

Taken altogether, ginger extract may be considered a natural antioxidative stress ingredient by enhancing the production of antioxidants and protecting the body against inflammation.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Anti Endometrial Cancer Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer with no side effects, according to the study

The endometrium is the inner lining of the mammalian uterus and very susceptible hormone change, particularly in the menstrual cycle.

Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer characterized by cells growth irregularly in the tissue of the endometrium.

Most cases of endometrial cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the 0 stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage,  the large tumor can suppress to the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to bleeding and severe localized pain.

At this stage, cancer cells in the endometrium can also travel a distance away from the endometrium to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a secondary metastasis. According to statistic, endometrial cancer metastasizes to the lungs 20–25% of the time, more than any other gynecologic cancer.

The cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer. However, in the US, endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs. Every year, approximately over About 63,000 new cases of uterus cancer are diagnosed, causing the death of 11,000 women.

The 5-year survival rates for white and black women with the disease are 84% and 62% respectively.
At the invasive stage, the survival rate is 16%.

Epidemiological studies suggested the increase in age, family history, certain medical conditions such as diabetes, diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer and endometrial hyperplasia in the past are associated with the onset of the diseases.

Some researchers suggested that a poor diet is a critical risk factor of endometrial cancer. Dr. Fulvio Ricceri and colleagues in the review of diet and endometrial cancer, wrote, "Women in the highest quintile of vegetable intake had a statistically significantly lower endometrial cancer risk. Women with high adherence to the MD had a risk of endometrial cancer that was about half that of women with low adherence to the MD.

And, " high vegetable intake, adherence to the MD, and a low DII are related to lower endometrial cancer risk, with several putative connected biological mechanisms that strengthen the biological plausibility of this association".

These results strongly suggested the risk of endometrial cancer is reduced by many folds for women who follow a healthy diet with high fruits and vegetable and low saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavones.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of endometrial cancer with no side effect, researchers at the Fujita Health University examined the ursolic acid, a pentacyclic triterpene acid, extracted from bearberry in the growth of endometrial cancer cell SNG-II.

Ursolic acid strongly inhibited the growth of SNG-II cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner.
The chemical compound induced cancer cells apoptosis through cell degradation.

At the At 25 and 50 microM strength, ursolic acid induced marked increases in caspase-3 activity associated with cells apoptosis to approximately 5-fold that of control cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Ursolic acid treatment also resulted in cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, the enzyme involved in many functions of the cell, including the repair of DNA damage.

Interestingly, after ursolic acid treatment, the levels of proteins involved anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2 protein) was decreased and tumor suppression (Bax expression) was enhanced.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "ursolic acid induced apoptotic processes in the endometrial cancer SNG-II cell line through mechanisms involving mitochondrial pathways and Bcl-2 family proteins".

Additionally, the evaluated ursolic acid effect in the growth of HEC108 cells showed that ursolic acid induced cancer cells apoptosis through several mechanisms, including
* Inducing cancer cells degradation.

*Similar to that of endometrial cell SNG-II cells, ursolic acid-treated HEC108 cells showed that exposure at 50, 75 or 100 microM induced marked increases protein associated with the pro-apoptotic activity (after 24 h) to 5.00, 11.76 or 12.75 times that of control levels. These results indicated Levels of the pro-apoptotic activity (cleaved caspase-3) increased in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

* Similar to that of endometrial cell SNG-II cells, ursolic acid treatment also resulted in cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase in a dose-dependent manner.

Finally, researchers also showed that after ursolic acid treatment, the levels of proteins involved anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2 protein) was decreased and tumor suppression (Bax expression) was enhanced similar to that of the SNG-II cells.

Taken together, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi processed high amount ursolic acid may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of endometrial cancer.

Herbal Arnica, Speed Up Wound Healing with No side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural plant for speeding up wound healing with no side effects, according to studies.

Wound healing is a natural process to restore the damage of injured tissue.

There are number stages of wound healing. The first and second phases are to stop bleeding and protect the tissue against infection through proteins associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all the invasive pathogens, respectively.

The third phase is the proliferation phase in which the wound is filled, the margin of the wound is reduced and the wound is completely covered.

The 4 phase is the maturation phase in which the new tissue slowly recover the strength and flexibility.

However, any interruption of the wound healing processes such as untreated overproduction of inflammatory cytokines, reduced or inadequate blood supply to the wound can lead to the formation of scars or chronic wound.

According to the statistic, in the US,  6.5 million people suffer from wounds that are not properly healing, Chronic wounds are more common in elderly people or people with high blood pressure, obesity, particularly in people with diabetes.

If you have a wound that does not heal in a specific time frame, please check with your doctor right the way.

Dr. Krister Järbrink and colleagues in the examined the complications of chronic wounds wrote, " Complications of chronic wounds include infection such as cellulitis and infective venous eczema, gangrene, hemorrhage and lower-extremity amputations. Chronic wounds lead to disability and disability worsens wound outcomes resulting in a vicious cycle".

Herbal Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.

Besides helenalin as it main ingredient used as an anti-inflammatory agent, the herb also contains 11,13- dihydrohelenaline, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.

On finding the natural compound for the treatment of wound healing, researchers examined the composition of a herbal formula in topical formulations for the decrease of bruising and muscle pain in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts.

The ethanolic preparation contains the equal parts of Arnica montana 4x, Calendula officinalis 4x, Hypericum perforatum 4x and Symphytum officinale 6x (0712-2).

Preparation (0712-2) exerted a stimulating effect on fibroblast migration (31.9%) vs 14.7% with succussed solvent (0712-1) at 1:100 dilutions (p < 0.001).

Preparation (0712-2) at a dilution of 1:100 promoted in vitro wound closure by 59.5% and differed significantly (p < 0.001) from succussed solvent (0712-1), which caused 22.1% wound closure.

The findings suggested the formula exerts low potency in vitro wound closure potential in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts.

Furthermore, researchers at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfur evaluated the Arnica D4 as efficacious as diclofenac in relation to symptoms and wound healing after foot surgery.

The randomized double-blinded, parallel-group study (GCP-standard), included Arnica D4 10 pillules (taken orally, 3 times per day) and diclofenac sodium, 50 mg (taken orally, 3 times per day) in 88 patients 4 days after hallux valgus surgery.

Arnica D4 and diclofenac were equivalent for wound irritation (lower margin of the 95% CI on day 4: 0.4729 for rubor; 0.3674 for swelling; 0.4106 for color) and patient mobility (0.4726).

Descriptive analysis showed the superiority of Arnica D4 with respect to patient mobility (p = 0.045). and pain, Arnica D4 was inferior to diclofenac (lower margin of the 95% CI 0.026).

These results indicated that the efficacy of Arnica is compared to that of conventional medicine for the treatment of wound healing without inducing side effects. However, Arnica D4 is 60% cheaper than diclofenac.

Taken altogether, herbal Arnica may be used for the treatment of wound healing orally without inducing any side effects, pending a large sample size and multicenter study.

Herbal Burdock, the Anti-Chronic Cough Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

herbal Burdock may have potential and positive effects on the treatment of chronic coughing, according to studies.

The antitussive effect is a cough-suppressive activity with the use of substances, including herb, medication.

Coughing is a natural defense of the human body by expelling mucus, microbes, and foreign particles from the respiratory tract, therefore protecting the lungs from infection and inflammation.

A chronic cough that lasts longer than a few weeks can be a result of a wide range of diseases from hay fever, common cold to bronchitis to pneumonia.

Some chronic cough is associated with some underlying diseases, including asthma gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis.

Some researchers suggested that long-term use of ACE inhibitors and smoking are 2 most common risk factors that have been found to associate with the onset of a chronic cough, epidemiologically.

Dr. Kiernan KE and colleagues in the examined the effect of smoking on the risk of a chronic cough, wrote, "The association of cough prevalence with current smoking habits and with lower respiratory tract illness in childhood found in the survey at age 20 was confirmed and in each instance appears to have increased in strength over the 5 years".

And, "The prevalence of a cough increased between the ages of 20 and 25 among those who smoked throughout or who started to smoke during this period".

These results strongly suggested if you expose your children with second-hand smoke and start to smoke at age of 20, you are at a higher risk to have a chronic cough.

Burdock is plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.

The herbal plant has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.

The herb contains carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colorings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.

With an aim to find a natural remedy for the treatment of coughing researchers investigated polysaccharide isolated from herbal Burdock influence on the experimentally induced cough.

The purified and/or modified polysaccharides from the flowers and plants exhibited statistically significant cough-suppressing activity higher than that of the non-narcotic drug used in clinical practice to treat coughing.

However, compared to the polysaccharide from marshmallow, the cough-suppressing activity of herbal Burdock was lower in the treatment of an acute cough.

Futhermore, in cat study to the examine the effect of a low-molecular-weight fructofuranan of the inulin-type isolated from the herb, researchers found that the fructan was found to be equally active as some non-narcotic, synthetic preparations used in clinical practice to treat coughing.

And, in mitogenic and comitogenic tests, the fructans biological response was comparable to that of the commercial Zymosan immunomodulator.

The finding clearly indicated herbal Burdock processes an antitussive effect similar to or better than that of commercial and over the counter medicine for the treatment of a cough.

Taken altogether, herbal Burdock may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cough with no side effects.

Celery, the Potential Functional Food For the Prevention and Treatment of Diseases Associated with Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a functional food for the prevention and treatment of the diseases associated with oxidative stress, according to the studies.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable.

Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by long-term overexpression of free radicals in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outer ring. In order for them to become stable, they must either donate or steal an electron from the stable atoms. These actions lead to a chain reaction which can not be stopped until all free radicals outer ring electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibited oxidation. there are 2 types of antioxidant in our body. The antioxidant enzymes which are produced by the host body and dietary antioxidants which is come from food intake.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that oxidative stress not only can cause damage to the proteins, lipid, and cells but also can alternate the cell DNA, leading to a number of chronic ailments, including cancers.

Diseases associated with oxidative stress are atherosclerosis, cancer, inflammatory joint disease, asthma, diabetes, senile dementia, and degenerative eye disease.

We can not stop free radical from entering into our body as they present in nature in different forms, including fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants, and many more, however, we can neutralize them by eating a healthy diet with more antioxidants and less free radical products.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of flavonoid extracts from celery on oxidative stress induced by dichlorvos (DIC) in male Wistar rats maintained on a normal diet.

The rats selected to the study were given DIC through intragastric administration by the dose of 7.2 mg/kg·body weight (BW)/day and additionally added 5% flavonoid extracts to the diet for 4 weeks continuously.

Before injecting flavonoid extract rats treated with DIC demonstrated a significant decrease of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and increased oxidative stress markers.

Application of 5% flavonoid extracts increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in livers of rats.

The activities of SOD, GST, and CAT in the DIC-treated group declined significantly when compared with the flavonoid extracts group and the DIC + flavonoid extracts group, respectively.

These results suggested that the protective role of flavonoids in minimizing oxidative stress caused by the harmful effects of DIC during the exposure.

Futhermore, in order to understand the protective role of celery extract, researchers launched an investigation to assess the celery leaves and roots in the ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water against oxidative stress.

In vitro, crude methanol extracts displayed potential scavengers of free OH* and DPPH* radicals, as well as inhibitors of liposomal peroxidation (LPx).

In vivo experiments, the extract also improved the antioxidant systems (activities of GSHPx, GSHR, Px, CAT, XOD, GSH content and intensity of LPx) in the liver.

The extracts bioactive compound the n-butanol showed the highest protective effect.

Dr. Popović M, the lead author said, "The differences observed in the action of particular extracts are probably due to the different contents of flavonoids and some other antioxidant compound".

Taken altogether, celery with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with the oxidative stress.
