Phytochemical Anacardic Acids, Kills Prostate Cancer Cells in Vivo and Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Anacardic acids may process a significant effect in reducing the risk and treatment of prostate cancer, some scientists suggested.

Prostate cancer is a chronic medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the prostate tissue.

Most cases of prostate cancer start on the cell of the surface of the prostate inner lining due to unknown mechanisms that alter the prostate cells DNA.

Most prostate cancers and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Prostate cancer is very slowly cancer.

The exact causes of prostate cancer are debatable.

People who were infected by the prostate cell change may not feel any symptoms until they are the age of 50 or over.

Aging, ethnicity, family history and hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome associated with DNA-repair mutations to the BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 genes, exposure to toxic chemicals are the most common risk factors associated to the onset of the diseases.

However, most men who have some of the above risk factors do not develop prostate cancer.

Some researchers in the comparison of prostate cancer risk in men who follow different diets and lifestyle suggested, the risk of prostate cancer increased substantially in men who follow the Western diet high saturated fat and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods and low in fruits and vegetable and whole grains.

On the other hand, the risk of prostate cancer decreases in men who have followed the traditional diet.

Dr.Roberto Fabiani, the lead author at the University of Perugia, in the study "A Western Dietary Pattern Increases Prostate Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" said, " The Healthy pattern was not related to PC risk (OR = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88–1.04) while the Western pattern significantly increased it (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08–1.65)".

Men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and ethnicity may lower the risk by changing of diet pattern with more fruits and vegetable and less red meat and processed foods.

Anacardic acids are phenolic lipids, phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in cashews, mangoes, etc..

In the study to reaffirm the anti-prostate cancer effect of Anacardic acid (6-pentadecylsalicylic acid), a natural inhibitor of histone acetyltransferase from Amphipterygium adstringens, researchers at the East China Normal University conducted an investigation to examine whether this salicylic acid could block angiogenesis.

Application of Anacardic acid significantly suppressed the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)in the induction of prostate cancer cell proliferation, migration, and adhesion and capillary-like structure formation of primary cultured human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) without detecting cellular toxicity.

Anacardic acid also effectively inhibited vascular development in chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane ex vivo (n = 10) and VEGF-triggered corneal neovascularization in vivo.

In mice bearing human prostate tumor xenografts (n = 6-7), application of anacardic acid (2 mg/kg per day) inhibited the volume and weight of solid tumors through apoptosis.

Furthermore, application of anacardic acid retarded the prostate tumor cell proliferation and microvessel density.

Additionally, Anacardic acid (AA) as a mixture of 2-hydroxy-6-alkylbenzoic acid homologs also inhibited LNCaP cell proliferation, induces G1/S cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of LNCaP cell.

After taking into account co and confounders, researchers discovered that AA-induced the LNCaP cells apoptosis may be due to the following aspects
* AA can regulate p300 transcription and protein level against the processes of cell proliferation and differentiation.in LNCaP cells.

* AA can activate p53 through its function as a regulator of the cell cycle and a tumor suppression against LNCaP cells.

* AA can down-regulates androgen receptor (AR) through suppressing p300 in the development and progression of prostate cancer.

The results suggested that AA process multiple anti-tumor activities in LNCaP cells.

Taken altogether, Anacardic acids may be considered a functional phytochemical for the prevention of prostate cancer and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer, without inducing any side effects, depending on the large and multicenter human study.

Herbal Butcher's broom, the Functional Remedy for the Treatment of Varicose Veins, with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a natural herb for the treatment of varicose vein without inducing any side effects, some studies found.

The varicose veins are conditions characterized by the enlarged and twisted veins caused by blood flowing backward, most commonly found in the leg.

The causes of varicose vein in most cases are associated with the weak or damaged valves in the veins which prevent blood from flowing backward.

Third to the arteries and capillaries delivering oxygen-rich blood to your body, veins return the blood to the heart and lungs to be oxygenated,

In some cases, the presence of varicose veins may be an indication of other health issues, including heart disease.

Some researchers at the University of Tampere found that people with varicose veins are associated to a higher risk of congestive heart failure than those without, the odds ratio for the disease onset is 2.9% compared to 1.9 of those without.

After adjustment to the body mass index, arterial disease and hypertension; multi-adjusted indicine odd ration (IOR) for the incidence of CHF by varicose veins was 2.1.

Other risk factors may accelerate the onset of varicose veins, including genetic preposition, gender, occupation involved long-term standing and sitting, the increase in age and people who are overweight and obese.

In the study to compare the genetic preposition of patients with Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and those without, researchers at the Duke University School of Medicine, showed that
* Relative gene expression profiles analyzed by the study significantly differed between patients with CVI and patients unaffected by CVI.

* Regulatory genes of mediators of the inflammatory reaction and collagen production were up-regulated and down-regulated, respectively in CVI patients, compared to those without.

* Some unanalyzed relative gene expression of multiple genes were significantly different in CVI patients compared to those without, according to the DNA microarray analysis.

These results suggested that people who carry these genes are more likely associated with the substantial risk of varicose veins compared to people who do not.

Butcher's broom is a low evergreen shrub, a species of Ruscus aculeatus, belonging to the family Asparagaceae, native to Eurasia.

The medical plant has been used in herbal medicine to treat reduce inflammation, Peripheral vascular disease, Hemorrhoids Bronchial asthma, Varicose veins, Hypotension, Jaundice, functional disorders of the heart, kidney disorder, venotonic and anti-oedematous properties, etc..

The chemical ingredients of Butcher's broom include rutin, sitosterol, sparteine, spirostanol saponins, steroidal sapogenins, sterols, stigmasterol, sulfated steroidal saponins, sweet broom, tetracosanoic acid, triterpenes, triterpenes, tyramine, etc.

On finding, the natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of varicose vein without inducing any side effects, researchers at the Thorne Research examine the effects of oral dietary supplementation and the traditional treatment of hemorrhoids and varicose veins.

Application of traditional medicine such as herbal Butcher's boom exerted a strong effect in the restoration of the loss of vascular integrity associated with the pathogenesis of both hemorrhoids and varicose veins.

Butcher's broom and other tested botanical plant extracts also improved microcirculation, capillary flow, and vascular tone, and to strengthen the connective tissue of the perivascular amorphous substrate.

These plant may be the alternative by preventing time-consuming, painful, and expensive complications of varicose veins and hemorrhoids induced by conventional surgery. suggested by Dr. MacKay D.

Additionally, the Mayo Clinic and Foundation experiments to evaluate the effect of an extract of Butcher's broon and to characterize pharmacologically adrenergic receptors in human varicose veins to the natural transmitter norepinephrine showed the application of Norepinephrine and Ruscus extract at the concentration-dependent inhibits the contractions in all veins.

Contractions to the extract were greater in varicose tributaries than in greater saphenous veins from varicose patients compared to the injection of Norepinephrine.

Interestingly, unlike Norepinephrine, contractions to Butcher's broom extract were not reduced by the alpha-adrenergic blocker, which is conventional medicine for the treatment of hypertension that relaxes certain muscles and helps small blood vessels remain open in control veins but were reduced by the alpha2-adrenergic blocker, an immobilizing an anesthetic drug in varicose veins.

These results strongly suggested that patients who used alpha-adrenergic blockers medicine for treatment of high blood pressure should switch to the alpha2-adrenergic blockade, before applying butcher's broom extract for the treatment of varicose veins.

Taken altogether, herbal Butcher's broom may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of varicose veins without inducing side effects.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada's Emodin Kills Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Cells, in Vivo and Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara sagrada may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), some scientists suggested.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.

In 2007, lung cancer causes the death of 158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women.

Most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung,

* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

The most common risk factors of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are long term smoking and people exposed to long-term second-hand smoke.

Dr. Ryo Maeda MD, the lead scientists in the study to investigate the association between cigarette smoking and clinicopathological characteristics of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to evaluate its significance as a predictor of recurrence after resection showed that
* The 5 years of the survival rate of never and ever smokers in patients with stage I is 92%, compared to 76%, in smokers.

* The 5-year recurrence-free proportions (RFPs) for never and ever smokers were 89% compared to 80%, in smokers.

At the final report, the doctors wrote, "Smoking history showed the different impact on postoperative recurrence in patients with NSCLC between stage I and stages II and III, and depending on histology in stage I patients" and "Disease stages should be considered while evaluating smoking history as a predictor of recurrence".

These results not only indicated smoking has a strong impact on the increased incidence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and but also reduces years of the survival.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The plant bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, Cascara sagrada also contains anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of nonsmall cell lung cancer, researchers examined the effect of Emodin, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor is a natural anthraquinone derivative found in the roots and rhizomes of numerous plants including herbal Cascara Sagrada.

Compared to the effect of cisplatin, a chemo drug, Emodin, exposure to the human NSCLC cells to emodin decreased cisplatin-elicited in the inhibition of the metaplasia and tumor development and increased the inability of a protein associated to cell DNA repaired.

Application of emodin alone or combined with cisplatin significantly decreased expression of cell repaired protein in carrying a portion of the code to other parts of the cell for processing.

Furthermore, the combination of Emodine and cisplatin decreased the proliferation and enhanced cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Although the study did not mention the effect of Emodin used combined with cisplatin have elicited the side effect caused by cisplatin, Emodin may lead to novel therapy in the future for NSCLC through the down-regulating expression of proteins associated to tumor spreading.

Further analysis of the Emodin effect on the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) scientists at the Hsinchu Hospital investigates the role of ERCC1 and Rad51 in emodin-mediated cytotoxicity in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells.

Where ERCC1 is a protein associated with cells repair and DNA recombination and RAD51 is a protein associated with the assists in repair of DNA double-strand breaks.

Injection of Emodin showed a reduction of the expression of ERCC1 and Rad51 protein levels as well as mRNA levels in four different NSCLC cell lines correlated with the inactivation of the MKK1/2-ERK1/2 pathway involving cells proliferation.

The result suggested that application of Emodin exerts the similar effect as those of U0126, an MKK1/2 inhibitor used in conventional medicine for the inhibition of cellular ERCC1 and Rad51 protein and mRNA levels.

Combination of Emodin and U0126 could enhance emodin cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines.

Dr. the lead scientist suggested these results showed that Emodin isolated from herbal Cascara Sagrada inhibited the nonsmall lung cancer through cytotoxic effect by blocking the protein associated with cell proliferation to induce apoptosis.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed the bioactive compound Emodin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

Chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus) Ameliorates the Menopausal Symptoms with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus) may have a potential effect in alleviating the symptoms of menopause some scientists suggested.

Menopause is a natural biological process. characterized by the end of menstrual cycles. Women who have gone 12 months with no menstrual period are considered menopause.

Menopausal symptoms are the set of conditions caused by reducing the expression of the hormone estrogen and progesterone due to the changing levels of hormones produced by the ovaries.

The hormone estrogen and progesterone are reduced gradually in an irregular fashion, leading to symptoms of vaginal dryness, hot flashes chill night, sweats, sleep problems and mood changes, weight gain and slowed metabolism, thining and loss of hair, particularly the loss of breast fullness.

Most women likely also experience irregular period such as menstrual periods will skip a month and return, or skip several months and then start monthly cycles again for a few months before menopause.

Women with premature ovarian failure may have periods cessation before the age of 40 years or earlier.

Vasomotor symptoms affect up to 75% of peri-menopausal women that lasts for 1–2 years after menopause in most women, however, some women may continue for up to 10 years or longer.

In the evaluation of a school of thought and belief that menopausal symptoms are a peculiarly 'Western' phenomenon, not experienced by women from other regions and particularly not from Asia, researchers at The University of Sydney conducted an experiment to examine the perspectives on the menopause in Asia and The West.

By assessment of the studies conducted in multi-ethnic communities living in Western countries as well as in Asian communities, researchers found that the menopause and its consequences are similar worldwide.

However, ethnic differences within Asia account for small differences in endogenous hormone levels and age at menopause between Asian and Western women, and the type of menopause symptoms and their prevalence also differ between those two communities,

These results suggested, there must be something found in the East that the West does not have.

In other words, women immigrated to the West from the East also acquire similar symptoms in the West, probably due to bringing in the Western diet pattern.

Compared to the diet in the West and East, researchers at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences found that the Eastern diet consisting of high fruits and vegetables, less meat and fewer processed foods processed a high amount of antioxidants which has been associated with lower menopausal symptoms, according to the total antioxidant capacity assay.

At the final report researchers said, "Postmenopausal women who consumed a diet higher in total antioxidant capacity had a lower occurrence of hot flashes and sweating, sleep problems, anxiety, exhaustion, and difficulty concentrating." and "Recommendation of diets high in antioxidant capacity may be effective to ensure experience of fewer menopausal problems in postmenopausal women".

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an anaphrodisiac herb.

The herb is considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts by taking it in a prolonged period of time.

There was a report that chaste tree berry stems and leaves used by women as bedding "to cool the heat of lust" during the time of the Thesmophoria,

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of menopause symptoms with no side effect Dr evaluate the effectiveness of a phytotherapeutic intervention comprising a co. Lucks BC and colleagues evaluate the use of herbal Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste tree/berry) in traditional medicine for the management of menopausal symptoms.

By examing the medicinal action of essential oils from both the berry and the leaf in a questionnaire-based survey returned from the participants, researchers showed, both oils were effective in treating the menopause symptoms in a great extends.

Application of the leaf essential oil demonstrated a broader range of actions as it also addresses psychological aspects.

This result contradicted to the general belief that berry is thought to be the active part of the plant.

The finding reconfirmed the first trial of two essential oils (derived separately from leaf and fruit) of Vitex agnus castus for menopausal balance conducted in the summer of 2000 by Dr. Chopin Lucks B.

In a total of 23 participants who were selected to the survey study, all indicated that application of Vitex agnus castus essential oil exerts a strong symptomatic relief of common menopausal symptoms.

Moreover, on the second trial to reaffirm the first trial results, researcher laughed the similar study to examine the effect of Vitex agnus castus essential oil in the summer of 2002.

In order to make the study more precisely, objectively and professionally, the researcher included 12 diverse health practitioners who perform the duty of the supervision of 52 additional subjects during the course of the trial.

After taking the results from the participant compared to those of health practitioners, researchers wrote on the final report, "The second trial appears to support the finding of the first trial, as well as identifying some important contraindications to use of the essential oil".

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus) essential oil may be used for the treatment and management of the menopause symptoms.

However, the volume of the oil intake can only be prescribed by the medial specialists in the prevention of acute toxicity,

Thyme Honey Inhibits the Side Effects of Chemo and Radio Therapy in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food for the treatment of side effects caused by chemo and radio therapy in patients with head and neck cancer with no side effects, according to some studies.

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers found in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

Most cases of head and neck cancer, at the early stage, start by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly on the surface of the inner lining in head and neck.

At the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia) and frequent and persistent coughing.

At this stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. researchers cannot explain why people with similar health conditions and the same risk factors, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not,

However, certain prevalent risk factors such as prolonged sun exposure, infected by the  Human papillomavirus (HPV) and  Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), poor oral and dental hygiene and occupational inhalants, long-term marijuana, and tobacco use and involuntary smoking are associated to the onset of head and neck cancer.

Dr. Yuan-Chin Amy Lee, the lead author in the study "Involuntary Smoking and Head and Neck Cancer Risk" suggested that involuntary smoking one of the major risk factor associated with the head and neck cancer has not drawn much interest in health practitioners.

According to the Involuntary smoking exposure data pooled across six case-control studies in Central Europe, Latin America, and the U.S. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) including 542 cases and 2197 controls who reported never using tobacco, long duration of involuntary smoking exposure at home and at work was associated with an increased risk (OR for >15 years at home: 1.60; 95%-CI 1.12, 2.28; for trend <0.01; at work: 1.55; 95%-CI 1.04, 2.30; p for trend 0.13).

Particularly, there is an association between pharyngeal and laryngeal cancers and involuntary smoking exposure observed for long duration of exposure.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient to reduce serious side effect caused by chemo and radiotherapy in the treatment of neck and neck cancer, researchers conducted a joint study led by the at the Cyprus University of Technology to examine the effect of honey on Radiation-induced xerostomia.

The parallel randomized controlled trial included 2 equal arms, the experimental arm (thyme honey) and the control arm (saline).
72 head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy or/and chemotherapy or/and surgery recruited in a specialized cancer center are included in the study.

Patients in both arms followed the same administration protocol with thyme honey and saline respectively was assessed at baseline, 1 month and 6 months following completion of the intervention.

Thyme honey treatment group displayed a statistically significant effect of the intervention on xerostomia (F = 8.474 p < 0.001) and overall quality of life, compared to the control.

Furthermore, thyme honey treatment group also showed to maintain their body weight and showed an improve their global health (p = 0.001) compared to the control group.

The Generalised Estimating Equations also revealed a statistically significant effect on strong and unbearable pain in the thyme honey treatment group.

Additionally, in the concerns of side effect of oral mucositis induced by radiation-induced after the treatment of head and neck cancer patients, researchers at the Cyprus University of Technology also conducted a similar study to evaluate the effectiveness of thyme honey on oral mucositis management.

72 head and neck cancer patients participated in the randomized controlled trial (RCT) with were divided either into the intervention group (thyme honey rinses) or to the control group (saline rinses), starting at the 4th week of the radiotherapy for seven weeks and repeated once 6 months later.

Thyme honey treatment group demonstrated a reduced grade of oral mucositis in compared to control, according to the Generalized estimating equations.

The treatment group also showed a similar effect as of the previous study in maintaining their body weight (p < 0,001) and improving their global health (p = 0.001) compared to the control group.

Most importantly, thyme honey treated group showed a significant improvement of the quality of life which was not found in the control group.

Dr. Charalambous M, the lead author said, "(Our) study provided evidence on the positive effect of thyme honey on the management of radiation-induced oral mucositis and quality of life in head and neck cancer patients:

Taken altogether, thyme honey may be considered a functional food for the treatment and management of side effects induced by the chemo and radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer.

Honey, the Potential Anti-Colon Cancer Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a sweet functional food that processes a potential for the prevention and treatment of cancer, some studies suggested.

Cancers are the group of chronic diseases, caused by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in some specific tissue and organs.

Most primary cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of a tissue caused the alternation of DNA.

At the later stage, after penetrating deep in the tissue of the infected organs, most primary cancer can travel a distance away from the original site to damage other healthy tissue and organs.

As they grow large enough, they can also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, causing severe pain and localized symptoms.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of colon cancer. Neither they know why some people with the same health conditions, diet pattern and ethnicity and family history, some are susceptible to the early onset of the diseases, while many others do not.

Most common risk factors, epidemiologically are associated with the types of cancer. The National Cancer Institute suggested that aging, tobacco, long-term sun and radiation exposure, chemicals and other substances, some viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight are the common causes of cancer.

In the challenges, the idea that cancer cannot be prevented among older adults, researchers at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion launched a study by examining different aspects of the relationship between age and cancer said, "Although the sequential patterns of aging cannot be changed, several age-related factors that contribute to disease risk can be".

What are the age-related factors that contribute to cancer be changed? researchers continued. "For most adults, age is coincidentally associated with preventable chronic conditions, avoidable exposures, and modifiable risk behaviors that are causally associated with cancer", and "current evidence suggests that for most adults, cancer does not have to be an inevitable consequence of growing older. Interventions that support healthy environments, help people manage chronic conditions, and promote healthy behaviors may help people make a healthier transition from midlife to older age and reduce the likelihood of developing cancer:

These results furtherly emphasized the needs to prevent chronic diseases and support a healthy environment and promote a healthy lifestyle in the transition from midlife to the older age are most important factors that can reduce substantially the risk of cancer.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient without side effects for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, launch an investigation to examine the anti-tumor and anti-inflammation properties of crude ginger extract and Gelam honey against many types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

The cells used in the experiment were divided into 4 groups: the first group represents HT29 cells without treatment, the second and third groups were cells treated singly with either ginger or Gelam honey, respectively, and the last group represents cells treated with ginger and Gelam honey combined.

Combined ginger and Gelam honey treatment stimulated the early cell death response through enhancing the function of proteins associated with programming cell death, namely, the caspase 9 and IκB genes and inhibiting the function of proteins associated with cells proliferation.

The IC50 of ginger and Gelam honey alone were 5.2 mg/ml and 80 mg/ml, respectively also demonstrated a similar efficacy as of the IC50 of the combination treatment of 3 mg/ml of ginger plus 27 mg/ml of Gelam honey.

These results suggest ginger and Gelam honey used alone or combination may be an effective chemopreventive and therapeutic strategy for inducing the death of colon cancer cells.

Further differentiation of the anti-proliferative effects of ginger and Gelam honey and their efficacy in enhancing the anti-cancer effects of 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) against a colorectal cancer cell line, HCT 116. researchers showed that
* Ginger (IC50 of 3mg/mL) is more potent than the Gelam honey (IC50 of 75 mg/mL) in inhibiting the growth of HCT 116 cells.

* Combined treatment (35 mg/mL) of the two compounds (3mg/mL ginger+75 mg/mL Gelam honey) synergistically lowered the IC50 of Gelam honey to 22 mg/mL without reducing the inhibitory effect against colon cancer cell line.

* Gelam honey markedly enhanced 5-FU inhibiting effects on the growth of HCT 116 cells.

Subsequent analysis on the induction of cellular apoptosis also suggested the individual treatment of ginger and Gelam honey produced higher apoptosis compared to 5-FU alone.

These results once against suggested that Gelam honey and ginger extract used alone or combination could potentially enhance the chemotherapeutic effect of 5-FU against colorectal cancer.

Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with ginger might process significant and profound effects in reducing the risk of colon cancer and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti-cancer possibilities.

Ginger, The Alternative Painkiller With No Side Effect

By Kyle J, Norton

Ginger is one of the natural whole food recommended by many scientists for the treatment of muscle pain and soreness.

Muscle pain is a common condition can arise by a number of factors including injury or overexertion, infections of soft tissues, or inflammation.

Another factor such as the flu may also cause muscle pain.

Medication used for the treatment of cholesterol such as statins, fibromyalgia and under active thyroidism is also associated with the onset of muscle pain.

Swelling, redness, or fever are also most common symptoms accompanied by muscle pain.

Acute pain triggered by the nervous system, alerting you to possible injury.

Chronic muscle pain is a pain that lasts more than 3 months. Most cases of chronic muscle are caused by a syndrome of chronic myofascial pain (CMP), a painful condition that affects the muscles and the sheath of the tissue that surround the muscles.

The syndrome processes a most highly sensitive and notable symptom associated with the areas within the muscles that can also stimulate the pain in the other area of the body.

In contrast to the  chronic myofascial pain (CMP), fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) also cause chronic muscle pain due to brain disorder in processing pain signalings

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In the reaffirming the ginger root pain-relief properties, researchers at the Old Dominion University launched a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether ginger root supplementation reduces muscle soreness and dysfunction from downhill running.

Thirty-two runners (10 women, 22 men) included in the trial were pair-matched and randomized to 1.425 g/day of ginger root or placebo for 5 days.

Ang a 40-minute downhill (-7.5%) run was completed on day 3. Before supplementation and at various points throughout a 5-day protocol, muscle soreness, pain-pressure threshold, vertical jump, and 1.5-mile run performance.

Soreness while jogging likely increased to a lesser degree with ginger root from baseline. Ginger root had a possible small benefit on the vertical jump from baseline to day 5 but no meaningful impact on 1.5-mile run performance.

No significant differences in adverse events were observed during the experiment between treatments.

The results suggested that ginger root possibly has moderate beneficial effects on running-induced soreness but irrelevant effects on recovery of physical performance.

Dr. Wilson PB, said, "Ginger represents one option for runners looking to temporarily reduce pain".

Furthermore, in the findings, a natural ingredient for the treatment of inflammation and pain induced by delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), a joint study led by the Shiraz University, was launched to examine the effect of ginger extract on the biochemical and functional symptom of delayed onset muscle soreness.

36 healthy female subjects included in the study were recruited by intra dormitory calls and randomly divided into 3 groups, including ginger intake 1 hour before exercise (GIBE), ginger intake immediately after exercise (GIAE) and placebo group (PL).

Participants consumed capsules contain 60 mg of ginger extract (the equivalent of 2 g dried ginger powder) or placebo before and after exercise. The exercise protocol consisted of a 20-minute step test using a 46cm step at a rate of 15 steps per minute.

Ginger intake immediately after exercise (GIAE) showed a significant reduction of pain compared to GIAE after 24 and 48h of EE and GIAE compared to PL.

The inflammatory cytokine IL-6 changed significantly in GIBE compared to PL (p<0.05) after 1, 24, and 48h after EE.

These results indicated that 2 grams of ginger may have anti-inflammation and analgesic effect on DOMS.

Taken altogether, ginger root may be considered a functional painkiller kitchen spice for the deduction of muscle pain and soreness if it is intake 1 hour before exercise.
