Alternative Therapy: Yoga, the Best Form of Exercise in Reduced Risk of Oxidative Stress-Related Diseases

Scientists may have found a safe and low cost home base exercise in increased antioxidants in fighting against free radical and inflammations in infectious expression, according to studies published online public medical library.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body wellbeing, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the study on healthy volunteers recruited from among university students, divided into two groups: a control (no yoga intervention, n=13) group and a yoga (n=12) group with practice with an instructor for 90 minutes once a week spread over 12 weeks, with recommendations to practice daily at home for 40 minutes with the help of a DVD, researchers indicated that free radical expression of serum levels of nitric oxide, F2-isoprostane, and lipid peroxide were significantly decreased in yoga group due to yoga in stimulated production of antioxidants in interception of free radicals unstable configuration in release of electrons before exerting chain reaction in compared to control.

In deed, yoga breathing and meditation enhanced the the balance of body and mind, caused by the stress, thus improving the blood circulation to nourish the cells in the body with nutrients and oxygen and keep the free radicals in check which are present in our body through daily activities such as breathing, exposure to the environment, food intake,....

The environment superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and extremely reactive hydroxyl radical in induction of oxygen toxicity are also inhibited by antioxidant over expression in yoga group.

Yoga intervention also reduced stress in exhibited nervous system sympathetically in production of hormone catecholamines to induce cytotoxic free radicals formation in initiated disease progression.

Furthermore, yoga exercise increased digestive system in generated antioxidants such as serum total glutathione (GSH) contents, GSH-peroxidase, and GSH-s-transferase through food intake to balance the over expression of ROS activities but also reduced stress implication in production of Malondialdehyde (MDA)which is considered a marker of oxidative stress in compared to control, observed by the initial blood samples obtained from both the group before and after yoga training.

Additionally, researchers also found that beside improved antioxidant explicitly, yoga group also significantly increased immune function in protection of our body against damage to the body during the acute phase of infection by regulated production of anti inflammatory mytokines and pro inflammatory cytokines in ameliorated symptoms of inflammation.

More importantly, unlike the other types of exercise, yoga group also demonstrated a significant lower levels of nitric oxide, a free radical with duo activity but in excess, it can cause certain damage to the body tissue.

Dr. Lim SA , the led author said, "Regular yoga practice remarkably attenuated oxidative stress and improved antioxidant levels of the body".

In a study of healthy male volunteers from the Indian Navy, divided into two groups--a yoga (n = 30) group and a control (n = 21) group with yoga group trained in yoga for 6 months and the schedule consisted of prayers, asana, pranayama, and meditation and the control group practiced routine physical training exercise for 6 months, researchers also found the similar conclusion as mentioned in the above study.
Yoga participated group demonstrated a reduced glutathione level at the beginning but increased significantly at the end of training in compared to control group.

Interestingly, in compared to the levels of antioxidant in the both groups researchers surprisingly found that total antioxidant status were increased strongly in the yoga group but decreased significantly in the control group.

After taking into account of other co founders, researchers recommended. "Regular practice of yoga can maintain or improve antioxidant level of the body".

Due to yoga effect in promoted antioxidant and reduced oxidative stress through improved immune activities, some researchers suggested yoga may be used as an home base excise to promote healthy lifestyles (balanced diet and moderate intensity exercise) in vulnerable populations, such as menopausal women, in prevention of aging induced oxidative stress-related diseases, according to the study of an urban community in Bangkok (Thailand) between May and August 2007 conducted by the Université de Nice Sophia-Antipolis, in premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Taking altogether, the findings showed that yoga indeed can be considered as an integrated form of exercise to improve antioxidant expression in reduced chronic illness caused by oxidative stress.

Herbal Therapy: Herbal Anise In Expression of Antidepressant-like Activity

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of dpression, some scientists suggested.

Anise
 is a flowering plant ofthe species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....


Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

Depression is a condition of mood disorder. affecting the patients feel, think, and handle daily activities.

According to statistic of The National Institute of Mental Health, approximately, 16 million adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2012 in the United States, a 6.9 percent of the population.

In the evaluation of the herbal Anise aqueous and ethanol extracts antidepressant-like effect in mice with several different doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg in compared to the standard medicine Fluoxetine at dose of 30mg/kg and and imipramine at dose of 20mg/kg, researchers at the joint study lead by the Azad University showed that except the dose at 50mg/kg of aqueous extract, application of other doses demonstrated a linearly significant improvement of mobility times.

Further analysis also found that all doses from Anise extract increased the swimming time dose-dependently, without any significant change in climbing time in tested mice similar to those of Fluoxetine and in compared to aqueous extract.

Moreover, Fluoxetine and imipramine expressed a strong decreased immobility time in both tests in contrast to imipramine increased climbing time without any significant change in swimming time.

The result suggested that both extracts in dose higher than 50mg/kg display antidepressant-like activity similar to that of fluoxetine through improved mobility of depressed mice as inactivity is considered as one of major symptoms in patients with depression.  

As the depression progressed, patients demonstrated a behavior in making efforts to escape from society, eventually will exhibit immobility with reflection of psychological despair.

Dr. Shahamat Z the lead author said, " P. anisum possesses an antidepressant-like activity similar to that of fluoxetine, which has a potential clinical value for application in the management of depression".

Additionally, in the testing essential (volatile) oil and essential oil of Piper laetispicum antidepressant activity in compared to Fluoxetine as standard antidepressant drug and other natural remedies including Leaves-Bay, Curry, Coriander and Mint; Fruits-Star anise, Pepper, Cardamom, Caraway and Fennel; Seeds of Fenugreek, Mustard, Nutmeg and Black Cumin; and Underground stem-Onion, Garlic, Ginger and Turmeric; Miscellaneous-Clove, Cinnamon, Capsicum, Tamarind and Asafoetida, reserachers found that all participated essential oil, specially anise produced a significant reduction in immobility along with an increase in climbing behavior  similar to those of fluoxetine. 

The application of  essential oil caused a dose -dependent reduction( probably in dose less than 50 mg/kg) in immobility which is contracted to the above study and an increase in climbing at all studied doses in compared to control group.

However, the test may not take into effect in real life patients who need to be treated for at least several weeks before they experience any relief from expression of symptoms.

Further more, in the examine of the efficacy of anise oil, in removing the symptoms of mild to moderate depression in patients with irritable bowel syndrome of a total of 120 randomly assigned into 3 equal groups received anise oil, Colpermin, and placebo, at the end of the study, scientists showed that application of anise group exerted a continuously improvement of the syndrome in compared to the other 2 groups with some unknown mechanisms. 

Some researchers postulated that essential oil smell may have a profound effect to the brain in triggering emotional reaction in stimulating the limbic system in regulated autonomic and endocrine function, particularly, in response to emotional stimuli in expression of motivation and reinforcing behaviors.

 Additionally, the application of essential oil scent also have a direct influence in calming the central nervous system in ameliorated over production of certain hormones in reacted to the unfavorably emotional behaviors.

Taken together, Anise essential oil may be used as a secondary therapy to standard medicine in treatment of depression.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga, In Reduced Functional abdominal pain Frequency and Intensity

According to studies online public medical library, yoga intervention may reduce risk and improve functional abdominal pain as a result of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.

Functional abdominal pain is a condition of functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders characterized by symptoms of pain associated with diarrhea and/or constipation

People with functional abdominal pain participated in yoga class are likely to experience less intensity of pain and pain frequency, some scientists suggested.

In the study of 20 children, aged 8-18 years, with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional abdominal pain (FAP) were enrolled and received 10 yoga lessons, researchers indicated the following results
*Yoga practice group of  the 8-11 year old group and the 11-18 year old group expressed a less pain frequency and pain was significantly decreased at the end of therapy
*The same above group also expressed a significantly decreased pain intensity
*The pain frequency and intensity also were reduced after 3 months of yoga participated.

Further assessment the study also found that yoga therapy also improves the quality of life score in all participants.

Although how yoga intervention in reduced abnormal pain are still unknown, some researchers suggested that it may be a result of yoga in initiated psychological effect in reduced correlated and interplayed of various aspects including physiological, psychological, and emotional factors which have been found to have strong implication in induction of abnormal pain.

More precisely, yoga mindfulness connected the physical body and mind exerted a profound effect in decreased stress in induction of emotion instability such as anxiety, irritable and anger through relaxing the central nervous system in production of certain hormone observed from the change of changes in gray matter concentration in brain regions involved in emotional regulation and arousal circuit, by MRI in the brain of children participated yoga.

*Yoga group expressed a significant decrease of Pain intensity (pain intensity score) and frequency (pain frequency score)
* Researchers also notice that after 12 months., during the study, yoga group showed no significantly superior compared with SMC, but Subanalyses suggested other wise (significant greater reduction of PIS at 12 months in favor of YT)
* More importantly, yoga participants showed less school absence in compared to control

In the summary, Dr, Korterink JJ, the led author concluded, "At 1-year follow-up, YT in addition to standard care was superior compared with SMC according to treatment success, PIS, and reduction of school absence".

Surprisingly, yoga participated program created a self consciousness between body and mind, by bring back the presence and dealing the event positive way, thus improving children awareness of the symptom and actively seeking for help from their physicians.

Taking altogether, the findings suggested that yoga may be considered as a secondary intervention combined with standard therapy for treatment of functional abdominal pain and Yoga intervention may be effective in treating patients with recurrent functional abdominal pain.

The Science of Legume: Black Beans In the Prevalence of Multiple Cancers' Risk

People who turn to alternative medicine for treatment of disease in avoidance of adverse effects induced by conventional medicine should be patient. In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy takes significant longer in times to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that intake of black bean may associate to reduced risk and treatment of various type of cancers(1)(2).

Cancer is a class of chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell growth in the body organs. Sometime, the cancer cells can spread to other tissues or organs depending to stages of cancer..

Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

1. Liver Cancer
Liver cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the liver's tissue. According to statistics approximated 40,710 adults (29,200 men and 11,510 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer this year.

According to the Stocking Hall, Cornell University, phytochemicals isolated from black bean such as triterpenoids, flavonoids, and other compounds exhibited antiproliferative activities against the HepG2 cells(3), the human liver cancer cell line.

The efficacy of black bean in ameliorated growth of liver cancer may be attributed to the presence of some potent antioxidants in expression of apoptosis.

2. Breast Cancer
Breast cancer in most cases, starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. but in rare instance, breast cancer may arise from other areas of the breast.

In the study of water-soluble condensed tannins isolated from black beans against Hs578T breast cancer cells, the preparation at 0.24-24 microM in dose-dependent induced cancer cell death by apoptosis but did not affect the growth of normal cells(5), as shown by observation assay.

The efficacy of water-soluble black bean condensed tannins at 24 microM in suppressed the breast caner cells(5) may be attributed to the phytochemical in reduced coagulation of remained blood in stimulated cancer cell migration and regulated the growth of breast tumor in formation of new blood vessels.

According to the National Taiwan University, fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture (BN999) showed a significant effect in inhibited the growth of human breast cancer AU565 cells in increased expression of multiple apoptotic regulators in induced apoptosis(6).

The fermentation product also exerted an impressive activity in induced apoptosis in various human cancer cells but not in normal human cells, Dr, Chia JS, the lead author insisted.

Dr. Dong M, the lead researcher at the Cornell University, in the finding of major phytochemicals of black bean which may have a powerful effect in treatment of breast cancer suggested, that out of newly found flavonoids, only 6 (5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 19, 20) of them showed potent antioxidant and antiproliferative activities.against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells(7).

3. Osteocarcinoma
Osteocarcinoma is a condition of bone cancer caused by irregular cell growth in bone, affecting mostly adolescents and young adults..

According to the The Chinese University of Hong Kong, hemagglutinin isolated from an edible legume, namely black bean, showed an anti proliferative activity(8) against tumor cell lines MG-63(8) and HepG2(8) but not the normal cell line.

Malignant osteocarcinoma cell treated with the phytochemical also exerted a significant effect in shrinking of tumor cells as well as inducing apoptosis.

The study also stated that hemagglutinin also induced cell death through interfering the first stage of tumor cell division in expression of protein, RNA, and DNA and inducing mitochondrial membrane depolarization(8) in controlling plasma membrane of a muscle or nerve cell

Furthermore, the study also suggested that the efficacy of hemagglutinin in causing cell death may be attributed to the function of protein in increased regulation of pro inflammatory expressions(8)

Dr. Dan X, the lead author said, " a novel hemagglutinin from an edible legume (showed) a growth-inhibitory effect on osteocarcinoma and liver cancer cells" and " The hemagglutinating activity of this hemagglutinin was demonstrated to be ion dependent and stable over a wide range of temperature and pH values".


4. Prostate Cancer
According to the National Taiwan University,fermentation products BN999, included black bean processed an anti prostate cancer effect through expression of prostate adenocarcinoma PC-3 cell line.

BN999, the product mixture induced cancer cell death by activating the protein gene involved pro cancer cell apoptosis via cell mediatory activities(9), including a network of membranous anatomical structure and double membrane-bound organelle in energy conversion.

Most importantly, BN999 target prostate and other cancer cell without affecting the normal human cells and inducing obvious side effects(9).

In the investigation of water-soluble black bean condensed tannins isolated from black beans showed a significant activity in induced cancer cell death by apoptosis without affecting the growth of normal cells, in dose dependent manner(10).

Additionally, the study also addressed that the efficacy of water-soluble in induced prostate cancer cell death may be attributed to direct effect in decrease cancer cell energy molecule and formation of cell structure.

Dr. Bawadi HA(10), the lead author indicated, after 24 h of injection, water-soluble black bean condensed tannins showed a strong reduced coagulation of blood in stimulated cancer cell migration and regulated mechanisms involved growth of prostate cancer in formation of new blood vessels.

5. Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is a medical condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in large intestine.

In a study of rats injected with azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colon cancer or saline and one week later administered an AIN, black bean (BB) and soy flour (SF)--based diet, researchers found that mice fed with black bean showed a significant expression in attenuated gene expression in coloncarcinogenesis by modulating cellular kinetics and reducing inflammation(11).

Others experiment to test the prevalence of high bean intake and low incidence of colon cancer in many Latin American countries in 53-wk-old weanling male F344 rats randomly assigned by weight to the following groups: control (11 rats), casein diet (21 rats), and bean diet (21 rats), with animals fed the casein and bean diets treated with the carcinogen azoxymethane (AOM) once weekly for 2 wk, the results returned showed a significantly fewer colon adenocarcinomas (P < 0.05) in rat fed with bean diet in compared control and rats fed the casein diet(12).

Rats fed with bean diet also expressed a lesser in tumor multiplication observed by tumors per tumor-bearing rat than in casein-fed rats.

Dt. Hughes JS, the lead researcher said, "dry beans contain anticarcinogenic compounds capable of inhibiting AOM-induced colon cancer in rats. However, the specific anticarcinogenic components within dry beans have not been identified".

But suggested that the efficacy of bean in reduced colon cancer risk may be results of the dietary fiber, phytochemicals or other components within dry beans(12),...

Promisingly, the results of rats fed a modified AIN-93G diet (control) or diets containing 75% black beans or 75% navy beans for 4 wk, and then colon cancer initiated by administration of two injections of azoxymethane 1 wk apart, also postulated a lower incidence of colon cancer in rats fed the black bean (9%) in compared navy bean (14%) diets than in rats fed the control diet (36%) at 31 weeks(13).

According to the evaluation of obesity induced of C57BL/6 J male mice by feeding a high fat (HF) diet for 8 weeks, followed by treatment with oral tea saponin (0.5%) mixed in HF diet for a further 6 weeks, injection of tea saponin (0.5%) mice demonstrated a impressive activity in ameliorated endotoxemia which cause by accumulation of endotoxins in the blood, an indication of over production of gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria, reduced numbers of pro-inflammatory macrophage accumulation in the colon in exhibited colon inflammation and gut microbiota alterations in reduced expression of good bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus,... and over expression of harmful bacteria Escherichia Coli and Enterobacter caused by HF diet.

Importantly, gallic acide also ameliorated cancer progression through inhibition of the matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-2 and MMP-9 same as the effectiveness as delphinidin involved in anti angiogenestic activity.

Taken together, eggplant with abundant bioactive chemical compounds such as gallic acid and anthocyanins may be used as functional food for reduced risk and treatment of  fibrosarcoma, depending to further investigation.

Neuro degenerative diseases are a class of conditions characterized by deteriorating neurons and accumulated plaque in blocking the neuro transmitters of the brain and spinal cords in performance of normal functions.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that green tea and its bioactive chemical constituents, particularly, Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) may have potential and therapeutic implications in reduced early onset, progreeion and treatment of Neuro Degenerative Diseases  However, geographic differences where the tea are growth, types of tea, time of harvest, time of feeding, how the tea are fermented,.....may effect the quality of tea in prevention of tumor onset.

The differentiation of green tea bioactive constituents in risk of neuro-degenerative diseases was found to associate to numbers of mechanism through many different aspects(1).

According to the statistic, approximately, 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, 1 million from Parkinson's and 400,000 from multiple sclerosis (MS) today, inducing overwhelming social, economic and health care burden on society.

The investigation of green tea bioactive epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) activities in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) mediated systemic inflammation in induction of neurodegenerative diseases suggested that application of green tea chemical constituent demonstrated a significant effect in ameliorated LPS induced expression of proinflammatory cytokines of tumor necrosis factor alphaTNF-α(2), a cell signalling protein involved in systemic inflammation in the acute phase of infection, and interleukin 1 beta (IL1β)(2), an cytokine with function in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses to infections or sterile insults and interleukin 6 (IL-6)(2) involved in inflammation and infection responses, particularly, in the inhibition of the expressions of inflammatory cytokines in the mononuclear blood cells (PBMCs), consisting lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, NK cells) with function to clear away of debris in the infection site.

The activation of inflammatory cytokines expression caused by lipopolysaccharide- (LPS) injection can trigger neurotoxicity(2), leading to neurons brains progressive degeneration, resulting in elevated risk of neuro degenerative diseases.

Application of green tea bioactive epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) was found not only inhibited LPS(2) in precipitation of toxicity in resolved inflammation and mediated neuroprotection but also exerted anti toxicity(2) through its antioxidant activity in decreased expression of reactive oxygen species in triggered brain cell apoptosis.

Green tea Epigallo-catechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in the aspect of ROS in risk of neuro-degeneration in the dentate gyrus, part of the hippocampus and/or hippocampal formation of C57Bl/6 mice, suggested that the application promoted neural precursor cell(3), (a partially differentiated cell) proliferation, without changes at the level of immature and mature new neurons(3).

1. Dementia
Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people. In 6-OHDA induced neurotoxicity to cause PD, administration of green tea GECG also reduced the intracellular iron retention(12) by decreasing the iron importers and increasing iron exporters, through regulation of the function of iron-regulated transporters, such as ferroportin.

There was a report suggested that intervention of 3 cups of green tea daily for 3 months improved the antioxidant status and reduced oxidative damage in early PD patients without affecting their iron status.

4. Cognitive impairment

In a total of 12 elderly nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction, participants who drink green tea powder 2 g/day for 3 months showed a significantly improved cognitive performance(13) and reduced the progression of cognitive dysfunction(13) indicated by Mini-Mental State Examination Japanese version (MMSE-J) score.

Other study (Japanese residents aged >60 years from Nakajima, Japan (the Nakajima Project) of 723 participants with normal cognitive function at a baseline survey (2007-2008), the 490 completed the follow up survey in 2011-2013, suggested that incidence of dementia and cognitive impairment are lower(14) among individuals who consumed green tea 1-6 days per week compared with individuals who did not consume green tea at all(14).

According to the double-blind, randomized controlled study of 39 nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction (four men, 29 women) divided into two group either with
consumption of 2 g/day of green tea powder (containing 220.2 mg of catechins) or placebo powder (containing 0.0 mg of catechins), green tea treated group showed a significantly reduced cognitive dysfunction(15) in 3 months follow up in compared to placebo.

The efficacy of green tea in decreased progression of cognitive impairment in the short term may be attributed to ameliorated oxidative stress and levels of low-density lipoprotein.

7. Amyotrophic Lateral Fclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a specific disease involved the death of neurons in controlling voluntary muscles.
