               Diseases of Central Nervous system

                                 Dementia

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age. Dementia is the loss of mental ability, severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.
II. Causes of dementia
B. Free radical causes of dementia
B.4. Lou Gehrig's disease(Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
1. Free radicals and Lou Gehrig's disease
Researchers found that glutamate in the synapses enhances the production of free radicals(77) only in motor nerve cells but spares other nerve cells(74) such as cells control senses and other body functions, causing more production of free radicals in disrupting of astrocytes in regulated glutamate levels(76).

2. Antioxidants and Lou Gehrig's disease
a. Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)

High doses of vitamin B12 as an antioxidant have shown to improve or slow muscle wasting in the later stages of patients with ALS disease(78)(79).

b. Vitamin E

Vitamin E protects against cell membranes from lipid peroxidation damage(80) in reduced the risk of breakdown of the cell membrane cause of ALS(81).

c. Superoxide dismutase enzyme

Mutations in the superoxide dismutase enzyme can increase the risk ALS(82) in catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide(83).

d. Cerebral cortex

Oxidative stress and DNA alternation triggered neurons damage(84) were found in elevating levels in  mice with ALS(85).

e. Amino acids

Diet high in amino acids as antioxidants have shown some promising effect in treating ALS(86)(87).

Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. It is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period start.

Migraine headache are the most common symptoms of PMS(2), effected about 30%(1) of women just before or on the days of period. While headache does not accompany with symptoms, migraine usually followed by series of symptoms(3)(4), such as menstrual cramp and pain(4), bloating, fatigue, and irritability(3).

1. Serotonin
Serotonin secreted by the pituitary gland(5) when we come to stress(6) and during migraine attack effects the blood vessels in the brain(6), cause of  irritation to the nervous system, such as affective, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms(6) and migraine headache(7)(8) last for hours(8).

2. Allergic reaction
For what whatever reasons, some women with pre menstrual syndrome may be sensitive to food such as  fat, carbohydrate (P < 0.05) and simple sugars, etc. probably due to cyclical hormonal or neurotransmitter fluctuations(14). just before period cause of migraine headache(15).

3. Hormone imbalance
Levels of serotonin also showed to effect the production of reproductive hormones. Imbalance high levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone, may cause a wide range of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, along with other conditions such as obesity and migraine(10).

4. Medication
Some medication including psychostimulant drugs of abuse(9) and medication over uses(10)  such as bromocriptine used to reduce levels of prolactin(11) for women with breast pain(12) before period may cause headache and migraine(13).

5. Magnesium deficiency
Magnesium deficiency is found to be associated to patients with migraine headache(16).
Magnesium regulates the levels of blood sugar(17)(18), and stops the blood vessels spam, during migraine attack(19).

II. Causes of dementia
B. Free radical causes of dementia
B.3. Multiple Sclerosis
1. Free radicals and Multiple Sclerosis
Free radical activity is a contributory factors in MS(60) due to proinflammatory cytokines in free radicals production in the peripheral immune system and the central nervous system (CNS)(60).

2. Antioxidants and Multiple sclerosis
Antioxidants protect the neural tissues from damage against inflammation caused by oxidative stress.
a. TNFalpha

TNFalpha, an imflammatory cytokine showed to associate with MS inhibited by antioxidants(61)) of green tea(62), and curcumin(63).

b. Melatonin
Melatonin functions as an antioxidant has the ability to protect neurons(65)(66) from free radicals cause of lipid peroxidation(64).

c Selenium
Some studies found that the level of selenium in the blood of people with MS was lower than in that of people without MS(67)(68). In patients with MS,
all abnormalities may be normalized by daily intake of selenium(69),

d. Niacin

Niacin acting as antioxidant is a key to the successful treatment of multiple sclerosis,

. It profoundly prevents the degeneration(70) of demyelinated axons and improves the behavioral deficits(71).

e. Vitamin D

Seurm of 25(OH)D level showed to regulate expression dynamics of a large gene-gene interaction system in immune modulatory processes of MS activity(72). According to the study published by the journal Neurology, group receiving vitamin D supplement demonstrated a remarkable 41 percent reduction in new MS events with no meaningful side effects(73).

It is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

1. Mineral deficiency
Calcium(1), magnesium(3) are essential for women during menstrual cycle because they have a calming effects for the nervous system(4). Imbalance or deficiency of calcium, magnesium and increase the tension of the brain's cells, causing psychological complaints, including insomnia(5).

2. Vitamin B6 deficiency
Women with PMS are found to have low levels of vitamin B6(6) which is vital to convert tytrophan(7)(8) to serotonin(9). Deficiency of vitamin B6 interferes the production of serotonin, causing reduced the production of melatonin, a vital hormone in promoting a good nigh sleep(11)(12).

3. Alcohol
Alcohol abuse not only damages the liver(13), but also increases the tension of nervous system(14)(15) induced sleep disturbance(16)(17).

4. Caffeine
Caffeine may help to increase nervous system function(18)(19)(20) but it may causes nervous tension(21)(22)and vitamin B6 deficiency(23) in induced PMS, causing unbalance of production of serotonin and melatonin hormone(11)(12) resulting in insomnia.

5. Low levels of melatonin
Melatonin is hormone which helps to regulate the sleep pattern(11)(12) of our body. some women with PMS found to have low levels of melatonin(22)(24) before period caused by low levels of serotonin and tytrophan(7)(8)(9). Intake of food with high in serotonin and tytrophan will help to improve insomnia.

5. Insulin irregularity
Lower insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations is associated to elevating premenstrual syndrome disorder(2). Researchers exam the inter relationship between insomnia and insulin fluctuation found out that improving  insulin balancing will aid the sleep pattern and via versa(25)(26)(27).

The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss How Traditional Chinese Medicine Helps to Treat PMS.

Spleen coordinated with stomach is an organ with function in absorption and transportation of nutrients(2)(3) to entire body from small intestine, destruction of redundant red blood cells and production of blood(1). Spleen qi stagnation causes abnormal function in regulating the red blood cells in blood stream(1) leading to blood stagnation(4) just before period resulting in PMS. Symptoms of spleen qi stagnation include weight gain or lost, abdominal distension or lost of appetite(5).

1. Red peony (Chi Shao)
Red peony used traditional Chinese medicine for treatments of all kinds of gynaecological problem, releases the blood stagnation in the uterus through its inhibition of inflammatory factors including medium PGE2(6), cause of abdominal pain and cramps, edema, exudation of abdominal blood capillaries for some women with PMS(7).

2. Red Sage Root (Dan Sen)
Poria cocos, a fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine improves blood circulation(8) and breaks up blood stagnation(8) and releases relieve the pain severity(9), probably through the regulation of estrogen production(10)(11) and blood lipid metabolism(10)

3. Safflower (Hong Hua)
Safflower, a blood tonic in Chinese medicine, breaks up blood stagnation|(12)(13) and improves blood flow(15) through warm-pungent-liver efficiency network(14) and regulation of female reproductive hormone(16).

4. Jujubae Date (Da Zao)
Jujubae date, a Chinese ancient herb, used nutritive tonic and blood detoxified medicine improves liver function in blood formation and circulation(17) through its hematopoietic function in the regulation of erythropoietin expression in liver cells.

The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

Chinese herbalists believe that PMS is also caused by
a) Deficiency of yang qi in the kidney showed to presence with over production of bad estrogen(5) and induce kidney abnormal function in regulating fluid circulation(8), causing symptoms of anxiety, panic attacks, fear(2), fatigue, lightheadedness, and headache(1)

b) Deficiency of yin normally happens to women in peri menopause and may also induce symptoms of menopause to women with PMS such as hair dry, restlessness, excitability, hard stool(3), painful back and knees, dry vagina, dysphoria with feverish sensation in the chest, palms and soles, etc.(4), due to low levels of estrogen produced before period(5),

1. Rehmannia glutinosa (Shu Di Huang)

Rehmannia glutinosa has been used in traditional Chinese medicine in treating kidney disorder(6)(7) to restore the balance of yin and yang qi of the kidney for treatment of symptoms of water retention(8), weight gain(9) in kidney yin deficiency women with pre menstrual syndrome, probably through raising levels of estrogen(9).

2. Morinda root(Ba Ji Tian)
Morinda root has been used in traditional medicine for treatment kidney yang deficiency to improve menstrual difficulties(12) through hormone bablancing(13), reduce antispasmodic effects and fluid retention(11) and induce blood flow(10) for lessening the symptoms of cramp and pain(11) and blood stagnation some women with PMS.

3. Cuscuta (Tu Si Zi)
Cuscuta, a kidney tonic medicine(14), showed to restore the balance the yin and yang qi of the kidney for treatment of  water retention(14) and cramp and pain(15) in women with PMS, induce sex desire through raising the levels of testosterone in women with  yang kidney qi deficiency(16) and reduce nervous tension(17), probably through reduction of NO-mediated formation

4. Cinnamon Bark (Rou Gui)
Cinnamon bark, a qi tonic herb(very hot in nature), has been used in traditional Chinese medicine release the qi stagnation of our body including liver and kidney, for treatment of cramp and pain(18), nervous tension and eating disorder(19), probably through regulation of 5-Hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT; Serotonin) is an important neurotransmitter.

               Diseases of Central Nervous system

                                 Dementia

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age. Dementia is the loss of mental ability, severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.
II. Causes of dementia
B. Free radical causes of dementia
B.2. Parkinson's disease
1. Free radicals and Parkinson's disease

Patients with Parkinson's disease have low levels of polyunsaturated fat in the substania nigra(44)(45) than other part of the brain, but higher levels of lipid peroxidation indicated by plasma malonaldehyde (44). Also patients with the disease found to contain waste pigments of lipofusion(46) and other polymers in the neurons(47) where dopamine is most active.

2. Aging and Parkinson's disease
According to Julius-Maximilians-University, physiological aging and OS-dependent aggregation of proteins, accompanied with environment toxins(49) are found to associated to the progression of the disease(48).

3. Antioxidants and Parkinson's disease
Antioxidants play an vital role for patients with Parkinson's disease.
a. Superoxide dismutase

The progression of the disease may be associated with the decrease levels of superoxide dismutase, a antioxidant enzyme(50). According to University of Thessaloniki, Patients with advanced Parkinson' diseases showed a statistically significant decrease of SOD activity in whole blood and in red blood cells(51).

b. NADH ubiquinone reductase
Levels of NADH ubiquinone reductase is decreased in the substania nigra(52) in patients with PD, leading to neurons apoptosis, but this can be treated with antioxidants Acetyl-L-carnitine (53) and alpha lipoic acid(54).

c. Uric acid
People with a high blood level of the natural antioxidant uric acid have a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease(55) than do people with lower levels(56), but high levels of uric acid increases the risk of kidney diseases(57) and gout(58).

d. Glutathione
Glutathoine  showed to deactivate the harmful product HNE in lipid peroxidation(59).

The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss How Traditional Chinese Medicine Helps to Treat PMS.

Traditional Chinese medicine used over 4000 thousand years in treating women reproductive system disorder believed Pre menstrual syndrome is also caused by Liver Qi Stagnation in many cases.

Liver is important in carbohydrate synthesis and fat and protein metabolism(1). Liver qi stagnation causes abnormal function of liver in regulating the production of estrogen(2) and other hormones by glands(2) for controlling menstrual blood(3), leading to blood stagnation in the productive system and inducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome including irritability, anger, depression(4)(5), etc,.

1. Angelica synthesis (Dang Qui)
Angelica synthesis, a queen herb for women reproductive tonic, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine in treating all women productive disorder(6) by releasing the qi stagnation cause of blood stasis(7) including pre menstrual syndrome. probably through its phytochemicals estrogenic(8)(9) and antiestrogenic(10) activities in restored hormone imbalance before ovulation and inhibited the over active uterus muscles(11)(12)(13) cause of pre menstrual pain and cramps(14)(15) and irregular menstruation(15).

2. Milk thistle seed
Milk thistle seed used in the traditional Western medicine over thousand year for liver tonic, showed to restore the liver qi stagnation caused by environment toxins and other toxins(16) and regenerate the liver's cells(16) in reduced symptoms of PMS(17) caused by the changes in monoamine neurotransmitters(17)

3. Peony (Shao Yao)
White peony showed to sooth liver qi stagnation(18) through a blood purifier and induced blood flow by increasing the liver in blood formation(19) and nourishing menstruation(20), relaxing spasm(22), relieving pain(22) and  liver dysfunction(20) causes of tension of nervous system, such as anxiety(23)

4. Fennel seed (Xiao Hu Xiang)
Fennel seed released the stagnation caused by imbalance of yin yang qi in the liver(24) causes of reduced blood flow in inhibition symptoms of pain and cramps(25).

5. Yellow dock root
Yellow dock root, a liver tonic medicine(26), detoxifies liver by removing oxidative damage accumulated in the liver(27) induced liver dysfunction in regulating the production of hormones(2) before and after ovulation.

               Diseases of Central Nervous system

                                 Dementia

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age. Dementia is the loss of mental ability, severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.
II. Causes of dementia
B. Free radical causes of dementia

B.2. Parkinson's disease
1. Free radicals and Parkinson's disease

Patients with Parkinson's disease have low levels of polyunsaturated fat in the substania nigra(44)(45) than other part of the brain, but higher levels of lipid peroxidation as indication of higher levels of malonaldehyde(44).

Researcher found that the progression of the disease may be associated with the decrease levels of superoxide dismutase, a antioxidant enzyme(50). According to University of Thessaloniki, Patients with advanced Parkinson' diseases showed a statistically significant decrease of SOD activity in whole blood and in red blood cells(51).

b. NADH ubiquinone reductase
Levels of NADH ubiquinone reductase is decreased in the substania nigra(52) in patients with PD, leaded to neurons apoptosis, but this can be treated with antioxidants Acetyl-L-carnitine (53) and alpha lipoic acid(54).

c. Uric acid
People with a high blood level of the natural antioxidant uric acid have a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease(55) than do people with lower levels(56), but high levels of uric acid increases the risk of kidney diseases(57) and gout(58).

d. Glutathione
Glutathoine  showed to deactivate the harmful product HNE of lipid peroxidation(59).
