Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica), the Potential Antioxidant Healthy Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Fig is a species of F. carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the chemical compounds' antioxidant activity of fruits of six commercial fig varieties differing in color (black, red, yellow, and green).
According to the tested differentiation,
* The Hydrolysis revealed cyanidin as the major aglycon.

* Proton and carbon NMR assays confirmed cyanidin-3-O-rhamnoglucoside (cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside; C3R) as the main anthocyanin in all fruits.

* Color of fig extracts is correlated well with total polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity.

More precisely. the extracts of darker varieties showed higher contents of phytochemicals compared to lighter colored varieties and the fruit skins contributed most of the above phytochemicals and antioxidant activity compared to the fruit pulp.

* The antioxidant capacity is also correlated well with the amounts of polyphenols and anthocyanins.

In other words, the anthocyanin fraction contributed 36 and 28% of the total antioxidant capacity, respectively. C3R contributed 92% of the total antioxidant capacity of the anthocyanin fraction.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Fruits of the Mission variety contained the highest levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins and exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity".

Taken altogether, common fig processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a natural anti-oxidative stress remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli Protects Diabetics Against the Onset of Hyperglycemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Although hyperglycemia is a hallmark in patients with diabetes, the condition can also occur to people without diabetes due to a certain medical condition such as pneumonia in the elderly.

The most common causes of hyperglycemia are associated with an uncontrolled diet, improper use of insulin and skip diabetic medication.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst frequent urination, fatigue (weak, and unintended weight loss. In severe cases, some patients may also experience symptoms of headaches, trouble concentrating and blurred vision.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

In severe cases, hyperglycemia can also lead to serious complications that require emergency care, such as a diabetic coma.

Women who are nondiabetics before pregnancy and experience gestation hyperglycemia are likely to develop diabetes in the latter days.

Believe it or not, hyperglycemia can also occur in people without diabetes due to stress. According to the study, people who are nondiabetics and experience abnormally high blood glucose are most likely to develop diabetes later in life.

According to the statistics, In 2015, approximately 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes high blood sugar, researchers compared the effects investigate the role of aqueous broccoli extracts (BEs) on hypoglycaemic properties.

According to the results of diabetic rats induced by a single intraperitoneal injection dose of 50 mg/kg body weight. of Streptozotocin (STZ) drug with the blood glucose level for each rat was measured twice a week, after 8 weeks,
* Diabetic rats before treatment with BEs showed significantly higher levels of DNA damage, GSH depletion, and impaired TAC levels in comparison to non-diabetics (P<0.05).

* The treatment of diabetic rats with BE significantly reduced DNA damage and conserved GSH and TAC values (P<0.01).

* Furthermore, BE attenuated pancreatic histopathological changes in diabetic rats.

Collectively, researchers said, "BE reduced the STZ mediated hyperglycemia and the STZ-induced oxidative injury to pancreas tissue. The used in vivo model confirmed the efficacy of BE as an anti-diabetic herbal medicine and provided insights into the capacity of BE to be used for phytoremediation purposes for human type 2 diabetes".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the treatment of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Elecampane, A Natural Anti-Inflammatory Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system in the protection of our body during tissue damage, injury, and infection.

Inflammation can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most cases of acute inflammatory are resolved within a few days without causing damage to the wound tissues. However, if the immune first line of defense can not completely destroy the invaders within a period of 3 to 8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Diseases associated with low-grade chronic inflammation include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Chronic inflammation also is an autoimmune disease caused by the immune system mistakenly attacks the bodily tissue.

Epidemiological studies suggested that aging that causes low production of sex hormones, being obese and obese, and smoking are associated with the early onset of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Some researchers suggested that out of a number of risk factors, a poor diet in the long-term is one of the major causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Most people with chronic inflammation are experiencing symptoms of body pain, persistent fatigue, and insomnia, psychological issues of depression, anxiety and mood disorders and long-term gastrointestinal discomforts, such as constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, scientists examined the effects of the roots of Inula helenium and aerial parts of Grindelia squarrosa in limiting neutrophil migration.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* The extracts and compounds showed a stong activity that suppresses neutrophil binding to the epithelium surface via downregulation of β2 integrin associated with pro-inflammatory expression.

* The pro-inflammatory cytokine such as IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-1β release were significantly suppressed by the administration of the chemical compound Alantolactone and grindelic acid found in Inula helenium and Grindelia squarrosa, comparable to those of budesonide.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Inula helenium and Grindelia squarrosa, which have been traditionally used in Europe as medicinal plants, are a valuable source of active compounds with anti-inflammatory activity".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an anti inflammatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica, a Promising Herbal Remedy for the Treatment of Chronic Kidney Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found in the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.

The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Other functions of kidneys are regulating and filtering minerals from the blood and producing hormones associated with the production of red blood cells, promote bone health, and regulate blood pressure.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in some cases, it is a complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

According to the statistics, in the US, over 660,000 Americans have kidney failure, affecting 14% of the general population.

Acute kidney diseases in most cases are associated with overdose of toxin or chronic. Acute kidney diseases can be cured if the underlying cause is found.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow and progressive disease that can lead to kidney failure over time.

At the advanced of CKD can cause the dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes build up in the body.

According to statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US general population suffer from CKD. Believe it or not, more than 661,000 Americans have kidney failure. Of these, 468,000 individuals are on dialysis, and roughly 193,000 live with a functioning kidney transplant.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, scientists compared the therapeutic effect of Astragalus and Angelica Mixture (AAM) on treating CKD patients.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

The multicentre, open-label, and self-control clinical design with thirty-two patients who maintain their previous basic CKD treatment, were given additionally took AAM (Astragalus and Angelica each 30 g), once a day, three months consisted of one therapeutic course.

According to the results of the experiment,
* AAM could improve 78.12% (25/32) patients' renal function.

* At the end of the 3-month treatment, Compared with before treatment, AAM decreased the Serum creatinine (SCr), increased the glomerular filtration rate (eG- FR), and plasma albumin (ALB) (2.76% +/- 1.97%) compared with before treatment.

In TCM syndrome differentiation, compared with before treatment,
* The integral qi deficiency syndrome, blood deficiency syndrome and yin deficiency syndrome were decreased, while the integrals for dampness heat syndrome and the turbid-toxin syndrome were increased by the treatment of AAM.

* AAM treatment exerted no obvious difference in all indices except the integral for hypertensive renal damage patients of yin deficiency syndrome.

* The SCr decreasing percent was 19.82% +/- 8.30% for patients of non-qi-blood deficiency syndrome compared to 5.24% +/- 10.75% for patients of QBDS.

* More precisely, the integral differences of qi deficiency and blood deficiency were obviously higher in patients of QBDS, when compared with patients of non-QBDS (P < 0.05).

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "AAM could improve the renal function of CKD patients, elevate their ALB levels, and ameliorate associated qi deficiency syndrome, blood deficiency syndrome, and yin deficiency syndrome, especially for CKD patients of QBDS".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of CKD in both conventional and TCM medicines, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Serum Tocopherols are Inversely Associated with the Risk of Cervical Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens at the top of the vagina.

The cervix acts as a transition area for vaginal lining (squamous epithelium) and uterus (columnar epithelium) through the transitional area (squamous columnar epithelium) to host the development of the fetus.

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or cervical area caused by abnormal cells growth with alternation of cells DNA.

Precervical cancer is the early stage of abnormal cell changes in the cervical tissue.

If left untreated, it can develop into true invasive cervical cancer caused by factors connected to male seminal fluid. A vaccine, Gardasil used to prevent pre-cervical cancer from the infection of two types of HPV was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006. It is for your benefit to take this vaccine if you are sexually active with several partners.

Types of invasive cervical cancer
* Squamous cell carcinomas
Squamous cells are the thin, flat cells that line the bottom of the cervix.

Abnormal growth of squamous cells accounted for 80 to 90% of invasive cervical cancer. Squamous cell carcinomas are defined as a cancer of which the squamous cells in the cervix have divided and replication in uncontrolled matter due to DNA alternation caused by a virus or other factors.

* Adenocarcinoma
Glandular cells that line the upper portion of the cervix. Abnormal growth of glandular epithelial cells is accounted for 10 to 20 percent of invasive cervical cancers. Adenocarcinoma is defined as cancer of which the glandular epithelium cells in the cervix have divided and replication in uncontrolled matter due to DNA alternation caused by a virus or other factors.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the relationship between serum carotenoid, retinol and tocopherol concentrations and risk of cervical cancer among Chinese women.

According to the analysis of the hospital-based case-control study in which 358 adults (158 incident cases and 200 controls) recruited from Xinjiang, China,
* There was an inverse association between serum carotenoid (α-carotene, β-carotene, and lutein/zeaxanthin) and tocopherol (α-tocopherol) concentrations and the risk of cervical cancer after adjusting for potential confounders compared to no effects of the levels of retinol.

* ORs for 1-SD increase were 0.71 (95% CI: 0.56- 0.92; p=0.003) for total carotenoids and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.60-0.94; p=0.008) for total tocopherols.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "These results show that higher serum concentrations of some carotenoids and tocopherols are associated with a lower risk of cervical cancer among Chinese women".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of cervical cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene Protects The Kidney Against Nephrotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys formed part of the secretory system, is a pair of the bean-shaped organ in the human body only filters out blood but also balances the body fluids by eliminating them and remove them through urinary secretion. The bean-shaped organs accompanied by the liver and skin form also detox the toxins in the body.

Nephropathy is kidney disease or damage that can be classified into 2 types
* Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
Patients with CKD may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.

The worse cases of kidney damage if untreated can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins accumulated in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.

Believe it or not, most cases of kidney disease are found in the late stage.

Most patients at the advanced stage of chronic kidney damage may experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problem associated with weakened kidney function

* Acute Nephropathy
Acute Nephropathy is a condition totally depending on the types of toxicity that causes kidney damage. including nephrotoxicity.

Nephrotoxicity is a condition associated with toxicity in the kidneys, including toxic chemicals and medications, on renal function.

Although there are many ways that drugs may affect renal function, nephrotoxins are substances displaying nephrotoxicity.

In fact, the use of drugs has been found to cause approximately 20 percent of community-and hospital-acquired episodes of acute renal failure.

More precisely, Among older adults, the incidence of drug-induced nephrotoxicity may be as high as 66 percent, according to Dr. CYNTHIA A. NAUGHTON and colleagues in the American Family Physician.

The study continued, "Drugs shown to cause nephrotoxicity exert their toxic effects by one or more common pathogenic mechanisms. Drug-induced nephrotoxicity tends to be more common among certain patients and in specific clinical situations".

And, "Some patient-related risk factors for drug-induced nephrotoxicity are an age older than 60 years, underlying renal insufficiency (e.g., glomerular filtration rate of less than 60 mL per minute per 1.73 m2), volume depletion, diabetes, heart failure, and sepsis".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potent ingredient against kidney toxicity, researches examined the effects of lycopene on colistin-induced nephrotoxicity in a mouse model.

50 mice used in the study were randomly divided into 5 groups: the control group (saline solution), the lycopene group (20 mg/kg of body weight/day administered orally), the colistin group (15 mg/kg/day administered intravenously), the colistin (15 mg/kg/day) plus lycopene (5 mg/kg/day) group, and the colistin (15 mg/kg/day) plus lycopene (20 mg/kg/day) group, or 7 days.

According to the tested analysis on a blood sample was taken 12 h after the last dose, Colistin treated group showed a significantly increased concentrations of BUN and serum creatinine, tubular apoptosis/necrosis, lipid peroxidation, and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) activity associated with kidney injury and damage.

Levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the tested mice such as glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were also decreased substantially.
.
Injection of lycopene at the concentrations of 5 or 20 mg/kg in the Colistin treated group attenuated the changes in the levels of all aforementioned biomarkers.

The expression of NF-κB mRNA associated with the elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines significantly decreased, whereas the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage and inflammation activated by (Nrf2) and HO-1 mRNA was significantly increased in the kidney compared to the colistin group.

In other words, lycopene protected the kidney cells integrity in the induction of nephrotoxicity against toxicity caused by colistin.

Based on the findings, researchers, "coadministration of 20 mg/kg/day lycopene can protect against colistin-induced nephrotoxicity in mice" and "This effect may be attributed to the antioxidative property of lycopene and its ability to activate the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of nephrotoxicity, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Possible Effects of Healthy Veggie Broccoli on Hypertension

By Kyle J. Norton

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.

In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have high blood pressure, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

High blood pressure is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

High blood pressure is a chronic condition associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

In other words, if you can control your diet, such as making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

The cause of high blood pressure is a result of hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) patients with blood pressure that higher than 130 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) is considered to have hypertension.

Untreated chronic high blood pressure may induce complications of heart attack, stroke, and other health conditions.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-high blood pressure, researchers examined the broccoli protein hydrolysates inhibitory activity in vitro and hypotensive effect in vivo.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Three ACE inhibitory peptides were isolated and identified as IPPAYTK, LVLPGELAK, and TFQGPPHGIQVER, and their inhibitory IC50 values were 23.5, 184.0, and 3.4 μM, respectively.

* LVLPGE and LAK, two novel peptides exhibited the highest ACE inhibitory activity associated with lowering hypertension with IC50 values of 13.5 and 48.0 μM, respectively.

* Moreover, the hypotensive effect of the peptides was assessed after oral administration to spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs).

Collectively, researchers said, "LVLPGE and LAK demonstrated a significant hypotensive effect in vivo. Protein from broccoli may thus constitute a potential antihypertensive peptide source".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
