#Herbal Coltsfoot"s Antioxidants process Liver-Protective Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal and only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself.
The liver is the first line of detoxing defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing them to other organs and tissues in the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the healthy function of the liver against any harmful toxins.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.

There are no exact causes of liver disease. Viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, including cancer.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound that processes a liver protective effect, researchers examined the highly active photocomposition (PC-1) containing oregano (Origanum vulgare), wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum), and coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) aerial parts, valerian (Valeriana officinalis) leaves and little-leaf linden (Tilia cordata) flowers and PC-1 extract exhibited the strongest anti-lipid peroxidation (LPO)O and antihemolytic effects.

According to the tested results, PC-1 extract activated the Nrf2/antioxidant response is more effective comapred to the extracts of other photocomposition.

Furthermore, oral administration of PC-1 extract (100-200 mg/kg) markedly protected the rat liver injury acutely or chronically against intoxication by carbon tetrachloride.

The liver protective activity of PC-1 was attributed to the activation of the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host and the improvement of liver histology, and blood chemistry parameters.

Moreover, the osmotic fragility test (OFT) also addressed that PC-1 extract inhibited the destruction of red blood cells in carbon tetrachloride-intoxicated rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These data support the strategy of in-vitro plant selection for developing efficacious tissue-protective photocomposition".

Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a liver protective remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemicals #PhyticAcid Inhibits Amyloid-β (Aβ) Pathology Associated with the Onset of #Alzheimer's disease (AD), According to Stdies

Kyle J. Norton

Phytic acid, a bioactive compound found mostly in seeds and beans may have a strong and profound effect in protecting the aging brain against the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD), some scientists suggested.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that occurs mostly in the older population characterized by progressive brain cell death that happens over time.

Alzheimer's disease worsens over time and it is fatal.

As the disease progresses, the brain tissue of the patient with AD has fewer and fewer nerve cells and connections.

In the elderly, age-related changes in the brain include atrophy (shrinking) of certain parts of the brain, inflammation associated with overexpression of free radicals in the induction of neuro cytotoxicity that affects the energy production within cells and long-term accumulated of plaques in the neurons caused by unhealthy diet are many prevalent risk factors that elevate the early onset and progression of the disease.

Dr. Pini L and colleagues in the study "Brain atrophy in Alzheimer's Disease and Aging" said, "Disease progression has also been associated with changes in white matter tracts. Recent studies have investigated two areas often overlooked in AD, such as the striatum and basal forebrain, reporting significant atrophy".

The results suggested the loss of white matter tracts in the striatum and basal forebrain may be the culprits that brain shrinking in the aging population.

In the analysis of the free radical, researchers suggested that free radicals overexpression cause the reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the elderly initiates the onset of oxidative stress that may attack and damage lipids, proteins, and DNA, leading to irreversible brain cells damage and development of AD.

Dr. Tuppo EE, the lead author in the study of oxidative stress and AD, said, "The brain is especially sensitive to oxidative damage because of its high content of readily oxidized fatty acids, high use of oxygen, and low levels of antioxidants" and "Evidence for oxidative damage has been obtained from postmortem brain tissue as well as from living patients with Alzheimer's disease. Antioxidants such as vitamin E show promise that they may help in treating the disease.

Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemical of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.

Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color. Phytochemicals may be the next potential sources of new medications for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.

In the finding of a novel protective treatment for AD pathology, researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University, Portland conducted an investigation to evaluate the phytic acid(inositol hexakisphosphate), a phytochemical found in food grains and a key signaling molecule in mammalian cells.

The experiment is to examine the protective and beneficial effects of phytic acid against amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in MC65 cells and the Tg2576 mouse model.

In MC65 cells, after 48-72-hour treatment with phytic acid researchers showed that phytic acid provided complete protection against amyloid precursor protein-C-terminal fragment-induced cytotoxicity by reducing the levels of calcium present, free radicals, and plaques accumulation.

Furthermore, the injection of phytic acid significantly increased brain levels of cytochrome oxidase which is found in low levels in AD patients and decreased lipid peroxidation.

The phytic acid was well tolerated with little side effects.

Additionally, in finding a composition and method for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, researchers showed that phytic acid, a phytate salt, an isomer or hydrolysate of phytic acid or a phytate salt, or a mixture of any combination administered to a person in an amount from about 0.5 grams to about 18.75 grams per day, demonstrated a potential effect in reducing amyloid plaque development.

At the experiment, researchers also discovered that very low doses of phytic acid are effective in the treatment and prevention of aggregation of beta-amyloid proteins as are commonly seen in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.

Taken together, the phytic acid found abundant in nuts and seeds may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention of AD and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

#BN999, a Fermentation Product of #Soybean, #Blackbean, and #Greenbean Mixture Inhibits the Growth of #BreastCancer Cells

Kyle J. Norton

The woman's breast is made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a woman's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by abnormal cell growth either in the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the breast before growing into a tumor by invading the deeper layers of the organ.

According to the statistics, the lifetime risk of invasive breast cancer developing is 12%.

In 2019, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosed at the early stage is close to 100%.

Epidemiologically, there are several factors that can reduce the risk of breast cancer including breastfeeding, early age at first full-term pregnancy, an increasing number of births, preeclampsia, and longer duration of breastfeeding.

Believe it or not, in a new study, published in the journal Breast Cancer Research, women who drink five cups of coffee a day or more can reduce the risk of getting certain types of breast cancer. (How many women can do that without developing nervous tension).

Dr. Davaasambuu Ganmaa, the lead scientist said, "This was a prospective cohort study with 85,987 female participants in the Nurses’ Health Study".

And, "The multivariate relative risks (RRs) of breast cancer across categories of caffeinated coffee consumption were: 1.0 for <1cup/mo (reference category), 1.01 (95% confidence interval: 0.92–1.12) for 1/mo-4.9/wk, 0.92 (0.84–1.01) for 5/wk-1.9/d, 0.93 (0.85–1.02) for 2–3.9/d, 0.92 (0.82–1.03) for ≥4 cups per day (p for trend= 0.14)".

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongs to the family Fabaceae, and is native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

In finding a potent compound that processes anti-cancer activity, researchers examined BN999, a fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture in the inhibition of the growth of human breast cancer AU565 cells.

The application of the mixed product showed a significant effect on the induction of breast cancer cells apoptosis without affecting the health of normal human cells.

Furthermore, BN999 treatment also activated the protein calpain significantly associated with adverse breast cancer-specific survival of the inflammatory breast cancer at low levels.

Moreover, BN999 also promoted caspase proteins such as caspase-8, -9, and -3 in the induction of cancer cell apoptosis through several extrinsic pathways.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking into account co and confounder wrote, "these data suggest that BN999 has the potential to be used as cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agent".

Taken together, green beans used combined with fermentation products of soybean, the black bean may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Polysulfides Isolated from Garlic Relax Vascular Smooth Muscle in Reducing the Risk of #CardiovascularDisease, Reserachers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Polysulfides are phytochemicals in a class of chemical compounds containing chains of sulfur atoms, belonging to the group of Organosulfides found abundantly in the oxidized product, including beer, wine, whiskey, garlic oil, etc.
There are many causes of heart disease. Most heart diseases are caused by high blood pressure contributes to the hardening of the arteries. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) build up in the arteries as a result of an uncontrolled diet with high levels of saturated fat and trans fat. Besides cancer, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Epidemiologic studies link the intake of garlic in association with reduced risk as well as the progression of cardiovascular disease(1).
According to the Institute of Preventive and Clinical Medicine, polysulfides from garlic are converted into hydrogen sulfide which has the unique property of relaxing vascular smooth muscle, inducing vasodilation of blood vessels, and significantly reducing blood pressure(2), probably through its anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects(3).

The Semmelweis University Institute of Human Physiology and Clinical Experimental Research suggested that H2S as a novel gasotransmitter in the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, similar to nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO), may be of value in cytoprotection during the evolution of myocardial infarction(4).

#Phytochemical #Lycopene Protects the Kidneys Against the Risk of #RenalCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Kidney cancer or renal cancer is primary cancer caused by irregular cell growth in the kidney tissue.
Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.

The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.

Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, and blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormones calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.

There are 2 most common types of kidney cancer including
* Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of adult kidney cancer, originating in the lining of the proximal convoluted tubule that transports primary urine, accounting for over 85% of all kidney cancer diagnosed.

* Urothelial carcinoma is also called transitional cell carcinoma accounting for 10% to 15% of the kidney cancers diagnosed in adults.

The stages of renal cell carcinoma are
1. Stage 0
Kidney (renal cells) cancer is classified as Stage 0 if the cancerous cell has not penetrated in deeper tissue but into the surface of the kidney lining.
2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface but have invaded into deep kidney lining, but still completely inside the kidney.
a. Stage IA1
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1: The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.
b. Stage IB: cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1: Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2: Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)
3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the kidney.
4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the kidney.
5. Stage IV
Stage, IV is the most advanced stage of renal cell carcinoma as cancerous cells have spread to distant parts of the body

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of kidney cancer, researchers examined the role of a lycopene-rich diet in the development of RCC in the TSC2 mutant Eker rat model.

Selected 10-week-old female Eker rats (n=90) in the study were assigned in equal numbers to receive 0, 100, or 200mg/kg of lycopene as part of their daily diet sacrificed at 18 months.

According to the tested assays, tumor size was decreased from 94% in control animals to 65% in the lycopene group.

Furthermore, the mean numbers of renal carcinomas and tumor length were statistically significantly decreased in the lycopene group compared to untreated controls. More precisely, tumor numbers decreased (P<0.002) in the lycopene group linearly (P<0.003) to the increased lycopene injection from 0 to 200.

Compared to the lycopene-treated group, the control rats fed only the basal diet had a greater length of tumors.

Additional differentiation of lycopene efficacy, researchers found that lycopene inhibited the kidney cancer cell by blocking the protein in signaling cell proliferation, and in promoting the cancer cell invasive response.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Dietary supplementation with lycopene attenuates the development of renal cell cancers in the predisposed TSC2 mutant Eker rat model".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of kidney cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Exerts Cytotoxicity Against Leukemia by Promoting Intracellular Ca(2+) Accumulation, Reserachers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 Americans.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells that appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common child form of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. the condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of leukemias, researchers explored the antileukemic activity of the dimethyl sulfoxide extract obtained from the roots of W. somnifera (WE).

On a human T-lymphoblastoid cell line, WE exerted a significant cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against the tested cell line observed by the differentiation of the different flow cytometric assays.

Furthermore, WE cytotoxic and cytostatic potential was attributed to the effect involving immunogenic cell death (ICD) observed in dying cancer cells that release damage-associated molecular patterns.

Furthermore, WE also promoted the intracellular Ca(2+) accumulation that alters cancer initiation and the generation of reactive oxygen species to induce cancer cell apoptosis.

In other words, the tested extract processed genotoxic potential. against leukemia cells in vitro.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Since the use of Withania is suggested in different contexts including anti-infertility and osteoarthritis care, its genotoxicity should be carefully considered for an accurate assessment of its risk-benefit profiles".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Honey Inhibits Stress That Causes #AnxietyDisorder Through Its Antioxidant Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of anxiety disorder, according to studies.
Anxiety disorder is a class of medical conditions associated with chronic worries and fear, leading to symptoms of a fast heart rate and shakiness.

Most people with anxiety may experience the feeling of nervousness in responding to events such as a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

According to the statistics, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in Canada, and approximately 1 in every 8 Canadians is affected by the illness. In other words, over 250,000 people in Canada suffer from anxiety.

Family history, gender (women are more likely diagnosed with the condition compared to men), chronic stress, people with traumatic life experiences, and the use of substances are some prevalent risk factors for anxiety.

However, some researchers suggested that widespread anxiety disorder probably is correlated with the onset of obesity over the past few decades. In fact, over 68% of Americans are either overweight or obese.

Dr. Lykouras L, the lead scientist in the concerns of obesity risk of anxiety disorder wrote, "
Obesity has been associated with anxiety disorders as follows: most of the studies show a positive relationship with panic disorder, mainly in women, with specific phobias and social phobias. Some authors have found a relationship with generalized anxiety disorder but a negative relationship has been also reported. Only a few studies have found the association between obesity and agoraphobia, panic attacks, and posttraumatic stress disorder".

And, "Anxiety is also a common trait in personality disorders. There is no single personality type characteristic of the morbidly obese, they differ from the general population as their self-esteem and impulse control are lower. Obese patients present with passive-dependent and passive-aggressive personality traits, as well as a trend for somatization and problem denial".

The finding strongly suggested in some aspects anxiety can be a cause of obesity and vice versa.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of anxiety disorder with no side effects evaluated the antioxidant and anxiolytic-like effect of Tualang honey in stressed ovariectomized (OVX) rats.

The study included animals divided into 6 groups, (i) nonstressed sham-operated control rats, (ii) sham-operated control rats exposed to stress, (iii) nonstressed OVX rats, (iv) OVX rats exposed to stress, (v) OVX rats exposed to stress and treated with 17 β-oestradiol (E2) (20 μg daily, sc), and (vi) OVX rats exposed to stress and treated with Tualang honey (0.2 g/kg body weight, orally).

Before the treatment of Tualang honey, OVX rats showed a significantly increased anxiety-like behavior due to increased stress, compared to other groups. Injection of either Tualang honey or E2 significantly decreased anxiety-like behavior.

Honey treatment rats demonstrated reduced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) which are biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Furthermore, the levels/activities of antioxidant enzymes produced by the rats such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferases (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR) were significantly increased in the brain homogenates of treated stressed OVX groups compared to untreated stressed OVX.

The finding strongly supported that honey processed the anxiolytic activity in the animal model.

Dr. Badriya Al-Rahbi, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "Tualang honey has protective effects against brain oxidative stress and may be a useful alternative anxiolytic agent, especially for postmenopausal women.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of anxiety disorder, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.
