#Phytochemical #Polysulfides Isolated from Garlic Relax Vascular Smooth Muscle in Reducing the Risk of #CardiovascularDisease, Reserachers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Polysulfides are phytochemicals in a class of chemical compounds containing chains of sulfur atoms, belonging to the group of Organosulfides found abundantly in the oxidized product, including beer, wine, whiskey, garlic oil, etc.
There are many causes of heart disease. Most heart diseases are caused by high blood pressure contributes to the hardening of the arteries. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) build up in the arteries as a result of an uncontrolled diet with high levels of saturated fat and trans fat. Besides cancer, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Epidemiologic studies link the intake of garlic in association with reduced risk as well as the progression of cardiovascular disease(1).
According to the Institute of Preventive and Clinical Medicine, polysulfides from garlic are converted into hydrogen sulfide which has the unique property of relaxing vascular smooth muscle, inducing vasodilation of blood vessels, and significantly reducing blood pressure(2), probably through its anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects(3).

The Semmelweis University Institute of Human Physiology and Clinical Experimental Research suggested that H2S as a novel gasotransmitter in the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, similar to nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO), may be of value in cytoprotection during the evolution of myocardial infarction(4).

#Phytochemical #Lycopene Protects the Kidneys Against the Risk of #RenalCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Kidney cancer or renal cancer is primary cancer caused by irregular cell growth in the kidney tissue.
Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.

The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.

Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, and blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormones calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.

There are 2 most common types of kidney cancer including
* Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of adult kidney cancer, originating in the lining of the proximal convoluted tubule that transports primary urine, accounting for over 85% of all kidney cancer diagnosed.

* Urothelial carcinoma is also called transitional cell carcinoma accounting for 10% to 15% of the kidney cancers diagnosed in adults.

The stages of renal cell carcinoma are
1. Stage 0
Kidney (renal cells) cancer is classified as Stage 0 if the cancerous cell has not penetrated in deeper tissue but into the surface of the kidney lining.
2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface but have invaded into deep kidney lining, but still completely inside the kidney.
a. Stage IA1
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1: The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.
b. Stage IB: cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1: Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2: Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)
3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the kidney.
4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the kidney.
5. Stage IV
Stage, IV is the most advanced stage of renal cell carcinoma as cancerous cells have spread to distant parts of the body

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of kidney cancer, researchers examined the role of a lycopene-rich diet in the development of RCC in the TSC2 mutant Eker rat model.

Selected 10-week-old female Eker rats (n=90) in the study were assigned in equal numbers to receive 0, 100, or 200mg/kg of lycopene as part of their daily diet sacrificed at 18 months.

According to the tested assays, tumor size was decreased from 94% in control animals to 65% in the lycopene group.

Furthermore, the mean numbers of renal carcinomas and tumor length were statistically significantly decreased in the lycopene group compared to untreated controls. More precisely, tumor numbers decreased (P<0.002) in the lycopene group linearly (P<0.003) to the increased lycopene injection from 0 to 200.

Compared to the lycopene-treated group, the control rats fed only the basal diet had a greater length of tumors.

Additional differentiation of lycopene efficacy, researchers found that lycopene inhibited the kidney cancer cell by blocking the protein in signaling cell proliferation, and in promoting the cancer cell invasive response.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Dietary supplementation with lycopene attenuates the development of renal cell cancers in the predisposed TSC2 mutant Eker rat model".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of kidney cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Exerts Cytotoxicity Against Leukemia by Promoting Intracellular Ca(2+) Accumulation, Reserachers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 Americans.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells that appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common child form of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. the condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of leukemias, researchers explored the antileukemic activity of the dimethyl sulfoxide extract obtained from the roots of W. somnifera (WE).

On a human T-lymphoblastoid cell line, WE exerted a significant cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against the tested cell line observed by the differentiation of the different flow cytometric assays.

Furthermore, WE cytotoxic and cytostatic potential was attributed to the effect involving immunogenic cell death (ICD) observed in dying cancer cells that release damage-associated molecular patterns.

Furthermore, WE also promoted the intracellular Ca(2+) accumulation that alters cancer initiation and the generation of reactive oxygen species to induce cancer cell apoptosis.

In other words, the tested extract processed genotoxic potential. against leukemia cells in vitro.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Since the use of Withania is suggested in different contexts including anti-infertility and osteoarthritis care, its genotoxicity should be carefully considered for an accurate assessment of its risk-benefit profiles".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Honey Inhibits Stress That Causes #AnxietyDisorder Through Its Antioxidant Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of anxiety disorder, according to studies.
Anxiety disorder is a class of medical conditions associated with chronic worries and fear, leading to symptoms of a fast heart rate and shakiness.

Most people with anxiety may experience the feeling of nervousness in responding to events such as a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

According to the statistics, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in Canada, and approximately 1 in every 8 Canadians is affected by the illness. In other words, over 250,000 people in Canada suffer from anxiety.

Family history, gender (women are more likely diagnosed with the condition compared to men), chronic stress, people with traumatic life experiences, and the use of substances are some prevalent risk factors for anxiety.

However, some researchers suggested that widespread anxiety disorder probably is correlated with the onset of obesity over the past few decades. In fact, over 68% of Americans are either overweight or obese.

Dr. Lykouras L, the lead scientist in the concerns of obesity risk of anxiety disorder wrote, "
Obesity has been associated with anxiety disorders as follows: most of the studies show a positive relationship with panic disorder, mainly in women, with specific phobias and social phobias. Some authors have found a relationship with generalized anxiety disorder but a negative relationship has been also reported. Only a few studies have found the association between obesity and agoraphobia, panic attacks, and posttraumatic stress disorder".

And, "Anxiety is also a common trait in personality disorders. There is no single personality type characteristic of the morbidly obese, they differ from the general population as their self-esteem and impulse control are lower. Obese patients present with passive-dependent and passive-aggressive personality traits, as well as a trend for somatization and problem denial".

The finding strongly suggested in some aspects anxiety can be a cause of obesity and vice versa.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of anxiety disorder with no side effects evaluated the antioxidant and anxiolytic-like effect of Tualang honey in stressed ovariectomized (OVX) rats.

The study included animals divided into 6 groups, (i) nonstressed sham-operated control rats, (ii) sham-operated control rats exposed to stress, (iii) nonstressed OVX rats, (iv) OVX rats exposed to stress, (v) OVX rats exposed to stress and treated with 17 β-oestradiol (E2) (20 μg daily, sc), and (vi) OVX rats exposed to stress and treated with Tualang honey (0.2 g/kg body weight, orally).

Before the treatment of Tualang honey, OVX rats showed a significantly increased anxiety-like behavior due to increased stress, compared to other groups. Injection of either Tualang honey or E2 significantly decreased anxiety-like behavior.

Honey treatment rats demonstrated reduced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) which are biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Furthermore, the levels/activities of antioxidant enzymes produced by the rats such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferases (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR) were significantly increased in the brain homogenates of treated stressed OVX groups compared to untreated stressed OVX.

The finding strongly supported that honey processed the anxiolytic activity in the animal model.

Dr. Badriya Al-Rahbi, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "Tualang honey has protective effects against brain oxidative stress and may be a useful alternative anxiolytic agent, especially for postmenopausal women.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of anxiety disorder, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemicals Phytic Acid Inhibits Markers and Expressions Associated with Proliferation of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Colorectal cancer also known as bowel cancer, is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix due to the alternation of DNA with unidentified origin.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a relatively very common cancer in the Western world. The cancer is considered a slowly growing and progressing cancer in a predictable way.

The bowel is divided into 2 parts, the first part of the bowel, the small bowl, is involved with the digestion and absorption of food, and the 2nd part, the large bowel which consists the the colon and rectum, is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Why colorectal cancer is more susceptible to the West than other parts of the world. Some researchers suggested it may be a result of the Western diet. People who the diet with high saturated and trans fats, red meat, processed foods, and fewer fruits and vegetables, whole grain are associated with a substantially higher risk to colorectal cancer, compared to traditional diet.

Dr. Alan Moss, the lead author in the cancer program at The University of Melbourne, a diet that contains high levels of red meat is associated with the risk of CRC.

The risk of colorectal is increased proportionally to the increased intake of red meat. In other words, the redder consumed the higher the risk of CRC.

And, processed meats result from salting, smoking, fermenting, or curing the meat, and common examples include ham, bacon, and sausage are also in the list of elevated the risk of colorectal cancer.

In the comparison of the “Western” and “prudent” dietary patterns on the incidence of CRC, researchers showed that people who follow the Western diet have a 31% increased risk of the disease onset, compared to a 14% reduced risk of CRC in people who follow the prudent diet with high fruits and vegetables, fewer red meat and processed foods.

These results suggested, that regardless to present the colorectal cancer risk, the change of diet pattern today, your risk the cancer is continuously lower, compared to before the change.

Dr., Shafie NH, the lead scientist in the researchers at the cancer program team at the Universiti Putra Malaysia the examined whether phytic acid, a natural dietary ingredient and an essential component of nutritional diets affects colorectal cancer risk showed
* Phytic acid exerted a strongly inhibitory colorectal cancer activity by increasing the function of proteins (up-regulation of Bax)associated with program cell death and (down-regulation of Bcl-xl) anti-cancer cell proliferation.
* Furthermore, when exposed to IP6 (phytic acid), the phytochemical up-regulates of caspase-3 and -8 expressions and activation of both caspases may also contribute to the apoptotic cell death of human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells.

Phytic acid, an organic compound found much in healthy food sources may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of colorectal cancer, some studies suggested.

Foods containing high levels of phytic acid including nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds,...

The results suggested, combined with t rice bran IP6 (phytic acid) induced apoptosis, by regulating the pro- and anti-apoptotic markers.

Moreover, in reaffirming the significant role of phytic acid in the inhibition of colorectal cancer, Dr. Saad N, the team leader, and colleagues launched an investigation of expression changes of β-catenin and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and cell proliferation in the adenoma-carcinoma sequence after treatment with rice bran PA by immunocytochemistry.

The experiment includes a total of 72 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 6 equal groups with 12 rats in each group.

Cancer induction by two intraperitoneal injections of azoxymethane (AOM) was given at 15 mg/kg body weight over a 2-week period. During the post-initiation phase, two different concentrations of PA, 0.2% (w/v) and 0.5% (w/v) were administered in the diet.

Before treatment with PA, rats-induced cancer showed that β-catenin, a marker of alternation of gene transcription, COX-2 expressions associated with cancer cell proliferation, and cell proliferation of Ki-67 associated with a significant contribution in colonic cancer progression.

And, a significant positive expression and correlation were found between COX-2 expression and proliferation and the total β-catenin also demonstrated a significant positive linear relationship with total COX-2.

After application phytic acid, researchers found that the expression changes of β-catenin and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and cell proliferation in the adenoma-carcinoma sequence were totally inhibited by rice bran PA.

Taken together, there is no doubt that phytic acid can be considered a functional supplement in the prevention of colorectal cancer and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of the disease without inducing any side effects.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of phytic acid anti-colorectal cancer possibilities.

#Carotenoids Exert Preventive and Therapeutic Benefits Against Age-Related Eye Disease, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Age-related eye disease is a class of medical conditions associated with vision impairment due to aging.
Most common types of age-related eye disease are
* Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition that causes irreversible blurring of the central vision in people over age 60.

The most common symptoms of AMM are slightly blurred central vision. Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.

Over time, age-related macular degeneration may affect the vision including the reading as the blurred area increases in size.

The risk factor associated with AMD is shadowy areas in your central vision or unusually fuzzy or distorted vision, particularly in seeing wavy or blurred, with some dark areas at the center.

* Cataract
A cataract occurring in one or both eyes is a condition characterized by the clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cases of cataracts are found in older adults.

Believe it or not, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

The risk factors associated with cataracts are aging, a lifetime of exposure to ultraviolet radiation contained in sunlight, cigarette smoking, a poor diet, and alcohol consumption are some of the prevalent factors associated with cataract developing.

* Diabetic eye disease
Diabetic eye disease is a severe complication of diabetes, a leading cause of blindness as a result of damage to the tiny blood vessels inside the retina.

The risk factor associated with diabetic eye disease is an uncontrol diet and poor management of blood glucose.

* Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a medical condition of eye disease as a result of the damage of the nerves of the eyes over time. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision impairment and blindness.

The risk factor associated AMD are abnormal intraocular pressure (IOP), history of coronary artery bypass or vascular surgery, moderate-to-high myopia, medical conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure, and hypothyroidism and long-term use of certain medication such as a corticosteroid.

Conventionally, there is no cure for the disease, treatment of age-related eye disease focuses on the improvement of quality of life, reducing symptoms, and slowing down the progression.

Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases, researchers the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of carotenoids and polyphenols.

The study included the search of medical literature on PubMed and Web of Science databases for original studies that investigate the benefits of different carotenoids and polyphenols in age-related ophthalmic diseases.

According to the differentiation of the selected studies, carotenoids (such as lutein, zeaxanthin, and neoxanthin) exerted significant preventive and therapeutic benefits against the aforementioned age-related eye diseases.

The efficacy of carotenoids in the protection of the age-related vision was attributed to the phytochemicals in
* Mitigating the production of reactive oxygen species, through its antioxidant activity.

* Inhibiting the tumor necrosis factor-α and vascular endothelial growth factor pathways involved in the stimulation of the formation of blood vessels in age-related ocular diseases.

*Protecting the cells in the eye against the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines

* Suppressing the gene associated with cell apoptosis

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This review discusses the role and mechanisms of ...carotenoids and their possible synergistic effects on the prevention and treatment of age-related eye diseases that are induced or augmented by oxidative stress and inflammation".

Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related eye diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Kale Supplement Inhibits Hyperactive Parameters Agaisnt the Risk of #CardiovascularDisease, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension or high blood pressure, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 Americans are hypertensive.

Hypertension is the leading risk factor of heart disease and stroke in the US.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including heart disease and stroke are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men, comapred to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63,000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

The most common prevalent factors associated with hypertension onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease.

Excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Depending on blood pressure levels, most people with mild hypertension are asymptomatic. However, unmanaged high blood pressure can induce complications of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, weakened and narrowed blood vessels, metabolic syndrome, and trouble with memory or understanding,

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications has caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Some researchers suggested by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Dr. L. J. Beilin wrote, "Lifestyle factors are critical determinants of blood pressure levels operating against a background of genetic susceptibility. Excess body fat is a predominant cause of hypertension with additive effects of dietary salt, alcohol, and physical inactivity."

And "Controlled trials in hypertensives show blood pressure lowering effects of supplemental potassium, fiber, n-3 fatty acids, and diets rich in fruit and vegetables and low in saturated fats".

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of daily supplementation of kale juice in modulating blood pressure (BP).

The study included 84 subclinical hypertensive patients with systolic BP over 130 mmHg or diastolic BP over 85 mmHg who received 300 ml/day of kale juice for 6 weeks.

According to the blood samples obtained on 0-week and 6-week, kale supplements showed a significantly decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure in all patients regardless of their GSTM1 or GSTT1 polymorphisms.

According to the joint study led by the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, the GSTT1 and GSTM1 gene increases arterial pressure; hence, it can predict susceptibility to cardiovascular disease.

In other words, kale supplements inhibited the hyperactive parameters without being affected by the gene expression of GSTM1 or GSTT1 polymorphisms.

Furthermore, kale supplements exerted no effect on the plasma lipid profiles of patients with GSTM1-null and GSTM1-present genotypes.

More importantly, the supplement also increased plasma HDL-C and lowered LDL-C in the GSTT1-present type, while blood glucose was decreased only in the GSTT1-null genotype.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, that kale processes a strong effect in lowering blood pressure through other mechanisms, regardless of GSTT1 and GSTM1 gene types.

Taken together, kale juice may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
