#Herbal #Angelica Sinensis Inhibits Parameters Associated with #WeightControl in #Obesity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, including over 650 million who were obese worldwide.

Visceral fat obesity is associated with 90% of patients with ischemic heart disease. In obese, the accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.

Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.

However, in non-obese subjects, visceral fat accumulation is correlated with glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.

Obesity rates have increased for all age groups in the US over the last several decades, coincidently with the periods that promoted the Western diet.

Weight gain is an increase in body weight associated with some parameters, including increased muscle mass, fat deposits, excess fluids such as water, or other factors.

However, weight gain has also been found to be induced by serious medical conditions.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of obesity, scientists examined the radix Angelica sinensis (RAS) suppressed body weight by altering the expression of the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene in an animal model.

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis in mice fed with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity,
* 36 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with the increased onset of obesity were found in adipose tissues from the RAS supplementation group (DH) and control group (HC).

* Six out of the 36 DEGs identified to be involved in lipid metabolism, with the APOA2 gene a potential anti-obesogenic influence were inhibited by the injection of RAS compared to control.

In other words, RAS supplementation in HFD-induced obese mice was associated with an anti-obesogenic global transcriptomic response.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study provides insight into potential applications of RAS in obesity therapy".

Taken together, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of weight gain in obese, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Coffee Reduces the Serum Uric Acid Level Depending on Gender and Number of Cup Intake Daily and Regularly, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Good News for coffee lovers, intake of coffee is associated with ameliorated levels of uric acid, a marker of gout incidence, a renowned institute study suggested.

However, intake of foods with high amounts of purines may cause an excess of uric acid in your blood.

According to the observation of data from 14,758 participants ages >/=20 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), decreased serum uric acid level is associated with increased coffee intake.

Serum uric acid level was significantly lower with coffee intake of 4 to 5 and >/=6 cups daily compared to non-drinkers.

The study also indicated that serum uric acid was not affected by total caffeine from coffee and other beverages.

Additionally, researchers in the review of databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and KoreaMed for all articles published before January 2015, 9 studies published between 1999 and 2014, containing a total of 175,310 subjects, demonstrated that coffee has a significantly lowering effect on serum UA.

The amount of coffee required to lower serum UA is different by gender. Women are required to consumse more cups of coffee (4-6 cups/day) compared to their male counterparts (1-3 cups/day) to exhibit the same effects

Significantly, the incidence of gout was even reduced linearly in participants with the intake of 1 cup/day or more with no different in both genders.

Promisingly, in a total of 11.662 men and women aged 49-76 years, excluding those with medication for gout and hyperuricemia, use of diuretic drugs, and medical care for cancer or chronic kidney disease, daily consumption of coffee has significantly inverse associations with serum UA concentrations in men.

Compared to women participants, male participants expressed a statistically significant elevation of an inverse association between coffee and serum UA levels.

Taken together, the intake of coffee is associated with a reduced level of serum uric acid in the blood depending on the number of cups intake per day.

#ChasteTreeBerry Fruit #Extract Processes Anti-Androgenic Effect Against Male Sexual Libido, Acne and Prostate Disease, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

A recent study conducted by a renowned institute suggested that Vitex agnus castus (Vac.) may have the potential to decrease the overproduction of testosterone in male reproductive physiology.

Testosterone is a male steroid hormone that plays an important role in male reproductive organs and building bone and muscle mass as well as stimulating sexual desire in both sexes.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In the study of hydroalcoholic Vac. extract (extraction by percolation technique) with the following doses: 65, 165, 265, 365, and 465 mg kg-', bromocriptine as a dopamine receptor agonist (5, 10, 20 mg kg(-1)) and haloperidol as a dopamine receptor antagonist (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 mg kg(-1)) injection male mice treated with chaste tree berry extract or combination of the extract showed a significant decrease of levels of testosterone in compared to other treatment groups.

Dr. Nasri S, the lead author said, ". LH and testosterone were measured by Radio Immuno Assay (RIA). LH and testosterone showed a significant decrease in the bromocriptine group and haloperidol increased these hormones. Vac. extract decreased significantly the LH and testosterone levels. The coadministration of Vac. extract and bromocriptine decreased LH and testosterone".

The study also found that Vitex agnus castus extract influences neurotransmitters such as dopamine in regulated LH and testosterone secretion.

In confirming the efficacy of chaste tree berry in reduced testosterone production, Vitex agnus castus L. (Vit.) fruit extract with 1650 mg/kg was tested on male mice models with the doses (65, 165, 265, 365, 465 mg/kg) injected intraperitoneally for 30 days in 5 groups of animals, all tested mice showed a decreased testosterone levels in dose depending manner.

The researchers also insisted that through the Radio Immuno Assay (RIA), Vit. the fruit extract has an anti-androgenic effect and probably acts through the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis and the side effects only appear after a long time of their usage.

Dr Jillian Stansbury, not the author of the studies said, " (due to the effects of chaste tree berry in reduced LH levels and testosterone levels ) that Vitex may improve symptoms of high testosterone levels in men, including excessive libido, acne, and prostatic disease."

The reduced levels of testosterone in herbal medicine may be beneficial for patients with high levels of testosterone-induced sexual libido, acne, and abnormal prostate expression.

#Cranberry Regulates Expression of Adiponectin Associated with the Management of Obesity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by excess body fat that has accumulated over time. People with a BMI of over 30 are considered obese.

Similarly, overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height. People with a BMI ranging from 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight.

According to the statistics, over 30 % of the American population is obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects on nearly every system of the human body, leading to an increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity in the US and Canada continues to climb at an alarming rate, leading to significant burdens to the country's economy and health care system.

Epidemiologically, the most common symptoms of obesity are breathlessness, increased sweating, inability to cope with physical activity, feeling very tired every day, back and joint pains, low confidence, self-esteem and feelings of isolation

According to the CDC, the most common complications associated with obesity are coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer of the breast, colon, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, and liver, and sleep apnea.

Currently, there is no effective treatment of the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combatting the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Dr. EunSeok Cha, the lead scientist wrote, "Obesity among young adults is a growing problem in the United States and is related to unhealthy lifestyle habits such as high caloric intake and inadequate exercise. Accurate assessment of lifestyle habits across obesity stages is important for informing age-specific intervention strategies to prevent and reduce obesity progression".

And, "Overweight and obese young adults can promote their cardiometabolic health with healthy lifestyles. To take action, young adults need practical and strategic dietary advice about beverage choices, diet quality, and macronutrient and micronutrient sources. In addition, increasing overall activity and minimizing sedentary behavior needs to be emphasized for young adults to achieve physical activity goals.".

In other words, changing to a healthy lifestyle such as a healthy diet and moderate exercise, over long-term obesity is controllable.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the anti-adipogenic effect of the polyphenol-rich extract obtained from chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot, raspberry Rubus idaeus L., bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus L., and cranberry Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton fruits.

According to the results from the analysis, the preparations ranged from 25-100 μg/mL not only significantly decreased lipid accumulation but also inhibited the expression of reactive oxygen species in the adipocytes without showing cytotoxicity.

The Real-time PCR analysis also revealed that the extract at a concentration of 100 μg/mL suppressed the process of cell differentiation of adipogenesis and lipogenesis that converts triglyceride for storage in fat via inhibiting the gene expression (PPARγ) of energy metabolism and genes associated with adipogenesis (C/EBPα) and lipogenesis (SREBP1).

In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, the expression of adiponectin involved in regulating glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown was increased by 4.4 fold whereas the hormone leptin found in high levels of obese subjects was decreased by 90% by the extracts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the analyzed extract may be a promising source of bioactive compounds that support long-term weight maintenance and promote the effective management of obesity".

Taken together, cranberry combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the management of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Honey Exerts Cardioprotective Activity by Inhibiting Parameters Associated with an Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of heart disease, according to studies.
Heart diseases are a medical condition associated with any disruption of blood vessels and heart function.

There are 5 types of heart diseases, including
* Heart disease affected by the arteries to the heart, such as coronary artery heart disease
* heart disease affected by heart valves function in regulating blood flow such as valvular heart disease
* heart disease affected electrical conduction such as arrhythmias
* Heart disease affected by heart muscles such as cardiomyopathy
and * Congenital heart disease caused by heart defect at birth

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease every year.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) kills over 370,000 people annually.

The most common heart disease in North America is CHD, the type of heart disease caused by plaque buildup on artery walls, leading to narrow, thickened, and stiffened arteries. Some researchers suggested that the causes of plaque build-up on the arterial wall were the results of several factors including an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, and smoking.

Dr. Sonia S. Anand and colleagues in examining the risk of heart disease associated with poor diet wrote, "Based on the current evidence, the optimal dietary pattern to reduce CVD is one that emphasizes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish, poultry, and moderate dairy and heart-healthy vegetable oil intake; this pattern will likely reduce the CVD risk by about a third".

, "This healthy dietary pattern needs also to be low in refined grains, added sugars, trans-fats, SSBs, and red and processed meats. The traditional Mediterranean-type diet provides a well-tested prototype for this healthy dietary pattern".

Researchers not only mentioned that the Western diet pattern is associated with the risk of CVD indirectly but also suggested that the diet pattern including the intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish, poultry, and moderate dairy and heart-healthy vegetable oil in reducing the risk of CVD.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of heart disease investigated the
honey and its polyphenols' cardioprotective activity.

According to epidemiological studies, regular intake of phenolic compounds is associated with reducing the risk of heart disease.

Honey exerted coronary heart disease protective effects by the expression of phenolic compounds through several mechanisms, including mainly antithrombotic, anti-ischemic, anti-oxidant, and vasorelaxant effects.

Furthermore, the effect of flavonoids found in honey decreased the risk of coronary heart disease by improving coronary vasodilatation, decreasing the ability of platelets in the blood to clot, and preventing low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) from oxidization.

The results clearly suggested the preventive role of polyphenols in honey against the onset of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

In order to reveal more information about the honey's cardioprotective activity, researchers examined the honey's effects on blood sugar, body weight, lipid profile, C-reactive protein, nitric oxide, pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, and homocysteine.

By examining the growing evidence and scientific data, researchers found honey not only demonstrates in the treatment of diabetes, HTN, dyslipidemia, and obesity but also has a potential effect against CVD.

Taken together, honey may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of heart disease, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Greentea Inhibits the Onset of #Asthma Through its Anti-Inflammatory Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be a potential therapeutic functional food for the prevention and treatment of asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease, touching people of all ages, particularly in children, a renowned institute suggested.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. But adding a slice of ginger will solve the problem.

According to the joint study led by the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Kaempferol (3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one), a flavonoid found in green tea exhibited anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory effects against various diseases, including asthma.

The study also demonstrated the function of Kaempferol in reducing oxidative stress through scavenging free radicals and superoxide radicals effects as well as preserving the activity of various antioxidant enzymes in attenuating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

In fact, evidence from in vitro and in vivo assays postulated that aqueous fraction of green tea also exerted anti-asthmatic signaling activity in the ovalbumin-induced asthmatic model.

Furthermore, in the study of mice-induced asthma by ovalbumin, an aqueous extract of green tea displayed a potent anti-asthmatic activity by increasing the expression level of tumor necrosis factor-beta, (a protein involved in the production of one of the inflammatory cytokinin the acute phase) and interferon-gamma in the displacement of immune function against microbial infection and decreased expression of anti-asthmatic cytokines in the lung.

More importantly, green tea alleviated asthmatic symptoms by increasing the expression of Th1 cell-in, which regulated the production of interferon-gamma and interleukin (IL)-2, proinflammatory cytokines, and tumor necrosis factor.

Promisingly, another green tea constituent, namely Chafuroside A (CFA), water-soluble flavone C-glycoside, in experimental asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-rat model, treatment with Chafuroside A at 0.5mg/kg, 1.0mg/kg could attenuate inflammatory symptoms and ameliorate antigen-induced airway inflammation, respectively.

Dr., Onoue S, the lead author in the above study said, " A self-assembled micellar (SAM) formulation might be an efficacious approach for enhancing the therapeutic potential of CFA for treatment of inflammatory diseases".

Unfortunately, there are few reports suggesting that green tea-induced asthma in tea-sensitive patients, as epigallocatechin gallate induced histamine release through IgE-mediated response.

Taken together, there is no doubt that green tea may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of asthma, but people with tea-sensitive syndrome should avoid drinking green tea unless with the approval of related field specialists.

#Healthyfood #Onion and #Garlic Reduce the Risk of #PancreaticCancer, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen.
The gland not only plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids by secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine but also regulates the production of the hormone insulin to convert glucose to energy from the bloodstream.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic medical condition caused by cell growth in the pancreas's innermost layer.

Pancreatic cancer found in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices with cancer of an epithelium that originates in glandular tissue accounts for over 75 - 90% of all cases of pancreatic cancers.

At the advanced stage, cancerous cells from the primary pancreas can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 56,770 Americans including 29,940 men and 26,830 women will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cancer will also cause the death of 45,750 Americans including 23,800 men and 21,950 women.

And the average lifetime risk of pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 64.

The most common symptoms of pancreatic cancer are
* Back pain is caused tumor growing in the back of the pancreas.

* Unexplained weight loss
Any unintentional weight loss over 10% may be a symptom of cancer.

* Loss of appetite
This is a general and common symptom in all forms of cancer.

* Pain and discomfort in the stomach area are a result of an oversized tumor that presses on the nerves in the area.

* Jaundice is a result of the oversized tumor that blocks the bile duct, causing bile back up to the liver.

* Fat in stool increase is a result of reduced bile that digests fat to the digestive system.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, researchers conducted a population-based case-control study to investigate the association between vegetables and fruits and pancreatic cancer.

According to the results of 532 cases and 1,701 age- and sex-matched controls completed direct interviews between 1995 and 1999, onion showed a related risk ratio of 0.46 compared to 0.78 for citrus fruits and juice, 0.63 for dark leafy vegetables, 0.76 for cruciferous vegetables, 0.59 for yellow vegetables, 0.56 for carrots, 0.51 for beans.

In other words, the risk of pancreatic cancer is significantly lower in onion consumption compared to other healthy vegetables and fruits.

More precisely, including onion and garlic in your diet, the risk of pancreatic cancer was 0.49 (0.36-0.68) for more than nine servings per day compared to those of less than five servings per day of total vegetables and fruits combined.

The results strongly suggested that onion and garlic have a much stronger effect on pancreatic cancer compared to other fruits and vegetables.

Taken together, onion used alone or combined with other fruits and vegetables may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
