The good news for aging people with neurodegenerative diseases, Andrographis paniculata possesses potent anti-inflammatory activity in the expression of neurodegeneration a study by a renowned institute suggested.
Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,......
Andrographolide, a major phytochemical isolated from Andrographis paniculata, exerted significant anti-neuro deficits in reduced infarct volume with a maximum reduction of approximately 50% at a dose of 0.1 mg·kg(-1).
According to the National University of Singapore, the efficacy of the chemical compound in neuroprotective effects is the result of the suppression of NF-κB, a protein in regulated cell survival and function of microglia in the activated response to brain injuries and immunological stimuli together with the reduction in the production of inflammatory cytokines.
Dr. Chan SJ, the lead research said, "Andrographolide, given i.p. 1 h after pMCAO, reduced infarct volume with a maximum reduction of approximately 50% obtained at 0.1 mg·kg(-1)".
Octodon degus (degu) is the only wild-type South American rodent that develops Alzheimer's-like pathology with age. the progression of AD in these animals is associated with aging on the loss of cognitive function, causing a decrease in the synaptic functions and an increase in the main hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Natural product (Andrographolide, ANDRO), administered to aged degus (56-month old) for 3 months, in compared 2 control groups (young degus: 12-month old and aged degus: 56-month old), showed a recovery of spatial memory and learning performance, synaptic basal transmission; and enhancing the neuroprotective effect, through reduced phosphorylated tau protein and reduced amyloid beta aggregate maturation in involving neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Andrographolide, ANDRO treated subjects.
Taken together, Andrographis could be used as a functional food in potential therapy for AD-associated neural damage due to aging processes and neuropathological hallmarks of aging-related diseases such as AD.

#Herbal Turmeric's #Curcumin Decreases Levels of #Hyperlipidemia by Reducing Body Weight, Liver Weight, and Adipose Weight, Researchers say
Kyle J. Norton
Hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition of abnormally high levels of any or all lipoproteins in the bloodstream, including cholesterol and triglycerides.
The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.
People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances form plague, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.
Believe it or not, about half of the U.S. adults (55%, or 43 million) are currently taking medicine associated with lower blood cholesterol.
There are many risk factors that cause the onset of hyperlipidemia, such as people with diabetes, being overweight gain, physical activity, and smoking.
Some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades may be one of the silent causes of hyperlipidemia in the Western world.
Dr. Charles Desmarchelier in the examined the risk of high blood cholesterol in a high-fat diet model said, "Mice on Western diet showed increased plasma cholesterol levels, associated with the higher dietary cholesterol supply, yet, significantly reduced cholesterol levels were found in intestine and liver".
And, "(The) intestine and liver react to a high dietary fat intake by activation of de novo cholesterol synthesis and other cholesterol-saving mechanisms, as well as with major changes in phospholipid metabolism, to accommodate to the fat load'.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats.
The study included 40 male Wistar rats divided into four groups with 10 rats in each. Two groups were fed with a standard rodent diet and the other two with a 60% high-fructose diet for 10 weeks. Curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight) was administered along with the diets simultaneously to each of the aforementioned diet groups.
After 10 weeks of the experiment, researchers found that curcumin decreased the levels of hyperlipidemia observed by reducing body weight, liver weight, and adipose weight.
The plasma levels of triglyceride inhibited the proteins associated with fat cell fat metabolism, and lipid ratios, and increased HDL-C (28.4 ± 4.5 mg/dL) in fructose-fed rats were also lower by the injection of curcumin.
Furthermore, curcumin also suppressed the lipogenic enzymes involved in regulating lipogenesis in fat cells.
Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of curcumin may be used for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Aloe Vera Reduces Aging Wrinkle by Stimulating the Production of Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Aloe Vera or Aloe Vera supplements may be used to delay skin aging degeneration in the induced expression of wrinkles.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It is very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits, used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wounds, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, etc.
The wrinkle is a skin degenerative condition caused by the loss of the dermis and the subcutaneous fat layer underneath the skin, leading to a slight line or fold on the skin, particularly in the face.
According to the Food Ingredients & Technology Institute, daily oral intake of plant sterols of Aloe vera gel (Aloe sterol) significantly increases the skin barrier function, moisture, and elasticity in photoprotected skin that may reduce the risk of skin wrinkles.
In a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, in 48 apparently healthy men (age range: 30-59 years; average: 45 years), intake of oral Aloe sterol supplementation after 12 weeks showed a significant improvement of the skin elasticity index in comparison in the baseline value.
Dr. Tanaka M, the lead author said, "Aloe sterol ingestion increased skin elasticity in the photodamaged skin of men aged <46 years, and "No Aloe sterol intake-dependent harmful phenomenon was observed during the intake period".
Furthermore, in vitro, Aloe sterols increased the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in skin response to connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. approximately two-fold and 1.5-fold, and promoted gene expression levels in human dermal fibroblasts.
In fact, daily oral Aloe sterol-containing Aloe vera gel powder (AVGP) significantly reduced facial wrinkles in women aged ≥40 years as well as stimulated collagen and hyaluronic acid production by human dermal fibroblasts.
In support of the above evaluation, intake of Aloe Vera gel enhanced healthy skin through promoting elasticity (R2), net elasticity (R5), and biological elasticity (R7) scores and skin fatigue area F3, the Food Ingredients and Technology Institute 12 weeks study suggested.
Taken together, there is no doubt that oral administration of Aloe Vera or Aloe Vera supplements may improve skin conditions caused by skin aging degeneration, but the quality of amount intake should only be prescribed by related field specialists.

#BlackBean Inhibits #ProstateCancer by Decreasing Cancer Cell Energy Molecules and Formation of Cell Structure, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Intake of black beans regularly may associate with ameliorated risk and treatment of prostate cancer, an Asian study reported. Particularly, people who follow the Southern pattern of diet showed a reduction in the risk of prostate cancer with approached statistical significance.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was the first domesticated growth in South America.
According to the National Taiwan University, fermentation products BN999, including black bean processed an anti-prostate cancer effect through the expression of the prostate adenocarcinoma PC-3 cell line.
BN999, the product mixture induced cancer cell death by activating the protein gene involved in pro-cancer cell apoptosis via cell mediatory activities, including a network of membranous anatomical structures and double membrane-bound organelle in energy conversion.
Most importantly, BN999 targets the prostate and other cancer cells without affecting normal human cells and inducing obvious side effects.
Furthermore, water-soluble black bean condensed tannins isolated from black beans showed significant activity in induced cancer cell death by apoptosis without affecting the growth of normal cells, in a dose-dependent manner.
Additionally, the study also addressed that the efficacy of water-soluble in induced prostate cancer cell death may be attributed to a direct effect in decreasing cancer cell energy molecules and formation of cell structure.
Dr. Bawadi HA, the lead author indicated, after 24 h of injection, water-soluble black bean condensed tannins showed strongly reduced coagulation of blood in stimulated cancer cell migration and regulated mechanisms involved in the growth of prostate cancer in the formation of new blood vessels.
The findings suggested that black beans with plenty of phytochemicals may be considered a functional food used alone or in combination with other superfoods for attenuated risk and treatment of prostate cancer.

#Ginger #Extract Inhibits Symptoms of Nausea and Vomiting Induced by #ChemoDrug or #Pregnancy, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have discovered a pungent kitchen spice that processes a significant effect in reducing nausea and vomiting with no side effects, according to some studies.
Nausea and vomiting are the natural protection of the digestive system reacted to many causes, including food poisoning, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), an ulcer, or bulimia.
Morning sickness or nausea and vomiting are common experiences in pregnancy, affecting 70–80% of all pregnant women.
Nausea and vomiting that often develop by five to six weeks of pregnancy are the results of the rise of the hormone estrogen in the early stage of pregnancy. The syndrome may get even worse in women who have sensitive stomach that tries to adapt to the changes of pregnancy.
Morning sickness in pregnancy may seem obvious in the general population, however in a group of women with severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy due to hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), an entity distinct from nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP), may lead to significant maternal and fetal morbidity if untreated.
Dr.Noel M. Lee, the lead author at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in the study " Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy" said, "Various metabolic and neuromuscular factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NVP and HG; however, their exact cause is unknown. Consequently, treatment of NVP and HG can be difficult as neither the optimal targets for treatment nor the full effects of potential treatments on the developing fetus are known".
Where hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a pregnancy complication characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and possibly dehydration.
Other causes of nausea and vomiting are due to prolonged period of exposure to stress and long-term fatigue.
Patients who are having chemotherapy are associated with an increased risk of nausea and vomiting because the injection of chemo drugs can affect parts of the stomach and brain that detect toxic (poisonous) substances.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The pungent spice has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
With an aim to clarify the effect of ginger extract in treating chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), a joint study led by Taipei Medical University-Shuang Ho Hospital was conducted to determine whether ginger could be used to treat CINV, which was interpreted using the PICOS (patient, problem/population, intervention, comparison, outcome, study) framework, with P being patients who underwent chemotherapy.
After searching the studies in English from 2000 to 2017 databases. 2 on a total of 10 studies with complete data. was included in the meta-analysis using Comprehensive Meta-analysis.
Ginger exerted a significant effect in reducing the symptoms of nausea and vomiting with the odds ratio (OR) of 0.71
Further analysis also discovered that ginger could only reduce acute CINV in patients, particularly acute vomiting.
After taking an additional ]assessment of the co and confounders, Dr. Chang WP the lead scientist said, "Ginger displayed significant efficacy with regard to controlling CINV in the experimental groups".
In reaffirming the effect of ginger on the early pregnancy symptoms of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), a joint study led by the Iran University of Medical Sciences launched an evaluation to compare the effects of ginger, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and placebo.
The triple-blind clinical trial on pregnant women suffering mild to moderate NVP between 6 and 16 weeks of pregnancy.
In these women ginger, 500 mg twice daily, vitamin B6 40 mg twice daily, and placebo twice daily were administered for 4 d.
The severity of NVP was evaluated 24 h before entering the study and up to 4 d after using medications and results were compared among the three groups.
The women of the three groups did not have significant differences according to age, gestational age, parity, and severity of each symptom before treatment and educational status.
After assessing the returned questionnaires, researchers indicated
* Ginger and vitamin B6 could reduce the severity of all items of the Rhodes questionnaire significantly.
* Ginger and vitamin B6 were more effective than placebo
* total score of Rhodes did not show a significant difference between ginger and vitamin B6 (p = .128). Ginger was more effective for nausea (intensity and distress).
These results once against illustrate the efficacy of ginger in the treatment of nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy.
Taken together, there is no doubt that ginger may be used as a functional food for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in both early pregnancy and the side effects of chemo treatment.

Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) processes Anti #Hypertension Activity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Garlic may be used as a chemopreventive and treatment agent against hypertension. In hypertension of 80-90% of patients with excess glucocorticoid levels, allicin found in garlic attenuated dexamethasone-induced anorexia and loss of total body weight.
Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.
Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as damaging the kidney. If you can control your diet, such as making changes to your lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and dieting with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.
In adult men and women, who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2008 to 2012-2014), the intake of garlic is associated to reduce the risk of hypertension by up to 26%.
In support of the above, a randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial conducted on 56 CAD patients, aged 25 - 75 years old also suggested that treatment with garlic-based drugs can be an effective treatment for controlling BP in CAD patients and has no interaction with other drugs that CAD patients take, after 3 months of administration.
Dr. Takashima M the lead author at the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd said, "Aged garlic extract (AGE) is effective in reducing the blood pressure of hypertensive patients,......AGE induced the concentration-dependent vasorelaxation of isolated rat aortic rings that had been precontracted with norepinephrine"
In fact, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Food Therapy, and Hypertension Control, garlic is the food recommended to be used to facilitate hypertension control. Based on a statistical analysis of antihypertensive foods recommended in 20 books on the application of food therapy for hypertension control.
Taking all together, garlic may be used as preventive and controlling effects for patients with or without high blood pressure. Some researchers insisted that the garlic anti-hypertension effect may result from its anticoagulant property.

#Cucumber Protects the Stomach by by Restoring the Natural Gastric Balance and Function, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
A stomach ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach.
In other words, if the mucus layer of your stomach that protects your stomach tissues against stomach acid is worn away and stops functioning, you may have a stomach ulcer.
The most common symptoms of stomach ulcer are indigestion caused by reduced function of the stomach and pain or discomfort in the stomach area.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of heartburn, vomiting, or vomiting blood, leading to dark blood in stools, or stools that are black or tarry, unexplained weight loss, and appetite changes.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms that often change over time, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Epidemiologically, long-term intake of NSAIDs, smoking, excessive alcohol drinking psychological symptoms such as stress, and eating spicy food are some of the most stomach ulcer prevalent factors.
According to the statistics, in the US, peptic ulcer disease (PUD) affects approximately 4.5 million people annually and the lifetime prevalence infected by H pylori is approximately 20%.
Believe it or not, approximately, 1/10 people in the US will develop an ulcer in the stomach or small intestine at some point in their lives.
Conventionally, depending on the causes of the stomach ulcer, the patient may be prescribed by
* Antibiotic medications for the treatment of bacterial infection.
* Medications that reduce or block acid production and promote healing.
* Particularly, the medications that protect the lining of the stomach.
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of stomach ulcers, researchers compared the compares the antacid effect of broccoli, kale, radish, cucumber, lemon juice, cold milk, and curd in an artificial stomach model.
According to the tested results, cucumber exerted an acid-neutralizing effect better than those of water.
Compared to other healthy foods, cucumber exhibited a significantly higher duration of consistent neutralization.
In other words, cucumber protected the stomach against acidity by restoring the natural gastric balance and function, which may have a strong impact on curbing acid reflux and reducing the burning sensation due to hyperacidity.
Through its acid-neutralizing effect, cucumber may soothe the inflamed mucosa of the stomach against the onset of an ulcer.
Based on the results, Dr. after taking other factors into account wrote, "It may be concluded that the natural food ingredients used in this study exhibited significant antacid activity, justifying their use as essential dietary components to counter hyperacidity".
Taken together, cucumber may be used for the treatment of stomach hyperacidity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
