Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.
The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.
Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduce blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.
Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.
According to the statistics provided by the US government, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Over 600,000 died of heart disease, every year including 370,000 people died of coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for 1 in 4 deaths.
Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.
The most common symptoms of heart disease are poor appetite, weight loss, shortness of breath, sudden collapse, blood clots, and stunted growth found in children.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.
In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression, and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding the function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
Many people know that tobacco use is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, but most of them do not know that smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases.
Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.
In finding a natural whole food for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cardioprotective effects of the aqueous extracts of Cydonia oblonga Mill. fruit (ACO) and Ficus carica L. fruit (AFC) against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.
In cardiomyocytes toxicity that was induced in male Sprague Dawley rats by intraperitoneal (ip) injections of 2.5 mg/kg DOX 3 times per week for a period of 2 weeks induced heart failure,
* The injection of the extracts showed a strong effect on mitochondrial oxidative stress that inhibits the damage to the mitochondria and dysfunction.
More precisely, ACO and AFC ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the DOX3 in the isolated mitochondria and prevented mitochondrial reactive oxygen species formation.
* ACO and AFC ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction in the isolated mitochondria and prevented mitochondrial reactive oxygen species formation associated with membrane lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial swelling, mitochondrial membrane potential collapse (%ΔΨm), and cytochrome c release.
* The antioxidant enzymes produced by the host such as glutathione levels and succinate dehydrogenase activity were significantly increased by the extracts.
In other words, ACO and AFC have beneficial effects against DOX cardiotoxicity which is mediated by attenuating mitochondrial dysfunction.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " (...The results) can be suggested that quince and fig may increase the therapeutic index of DOX".
Taken together, the common fig may be considered a natural anti-CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Amine Oxidase Found in #Green Pea (GP) Inhibits the Risk of #AllergicAsthma, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Respiratory disease is a class of medical conditions that affect the breathing organ and tissues. The most common respiratory diseases are inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung disease, restrictive lung disease, and respiratory tract infections.
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.
The medical condition affects people of all ages and mostly starts during childhood.
Besides episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, patients with asthma also experience symptoms of reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.
Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.
Asthma in some cases can interfere with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.
According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.
Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, triggered by inhaling allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen, or mold.
The condition, in most cases, is involved in the overreaction of the immune system against unharmful allergens, leading to the tightening of the muscle of the airway.
Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayas Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.
In finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of asthma, researchers investigated the impact of amine oxidase green pea (GP) effects on allergic asthma shock.
According to the tested analysis, the plant amine oxidase (Cu-AO, histaminase, EC1.4.3.6) purified from pea seedlings showed strong activity against the onset of allergic asthma by modulating IgE-mediated allergic reactions.
Where the IgE antibodies formed to an antigen (or allergen) are determined by many factors including genetic, flea, food, and environmental allergens.
In other words, plant amine oxidase purified from pea seeding mediates the hypersensitive response of immune functioning against allergic asthma shock.
Taken together, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of allergic asthma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Reduces the Risk of #Gingivitis by Inducing a Significant Change in Gingival (GI) and Plaque (PI), According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Oral health is a process or activity that protects the oral cavity against diseases associated with regular brushing of the teeth and cleaning between the teeth.
Gingivitis or gingival inflammation is one of the most common conditions of oral inflammation of the gum caused by overexpression of plaques accumulated on your teeth that irritate the gingiva. Over time, the gum of an infected person has become swollen and bleeds easily.
In severe cases, the condition can lead to periodontal disease, inducing tooth decay or loss of the tooth.
Most of the cases of gingivitis are associated with poor hygiene, particularly in people who smoke.
Gingivitis can be reversed by following good oral health habits, including brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular dental checkups.
Other causes of the oral problem are poor diet and hygiene, trauma, stress, alcohol use, and use of illegal substances.
However, chronic diseases also are found to induce poor oral health, including diabetes.
The most common symptoms of gingivitis include swollen gums with dusky red or dark red color and bleeding easily when brushed or floss, particularly breath-breath.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, smoking is an important cause of severe gum disease in the US.
Some researchers suggested that long-term oral infection can place patients at risk of certain chronic diseases.
Dr. Xiaojing Li and colleagues wrote, "Recently, it has been recognized that oral infection, especially periodontitis, may affect the course and pathogenesis of a number of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, and low birth weight".
And, "Periodontitis as a major oral infection may affect the host's susceptibility to systemic disease in three ways: by shared risk factors; subgingival biofilms acting as reservoirs of gram-negative bacteria; and the periodontium acting as a reservoir of inflammatory mediators".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the improvement of oral health, researchers examined the effect of cranberry functional beverage (CFB) on gingival inflammation indices for eight weeks.
The two-arm randomized controlled study included 50 participants divided into an experimental group (CFB), administered daily with 750 ml CFB, or a control group administered the same amount of water.
During the experiment, researchers found that* CFB shows a significant change in gingival (GI) and plaque (PI) but has no effects on not bleeding on probing (BoP) and approximal plaque (API) indices compared to the control group.
* Furthermore, Streptococcus mutans (SM) associated with oral infection was lower in the CFB group compared to control.
* However, there is no difference in serum or saliva antioxidant status (TAS), IL-1beta associated with inflammatory status, and serum malondialdehyde level (MDA), between groups.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " the consumption of CFB improves gingival and plaque indices without posing a risk of caries development. Thus CFB can be recommended as a safe adjunct for nonsurgical PT in patients with gingivitis".
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Broccoli's #Sulforaphane (SF) Protects the Kidney Cells Against Chemo Drug Cisplatin Toxicity, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found on the left and right side of the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of the kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.
Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.
Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.
Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.
Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that kills cancer cells by inducing cytotoxicity. Most cases of chemotherapy have been found to cause severe side effects on the patient, including fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, bowel issues such as constipation or diarrhea, hair loss, mouth sores, skin and nail problems.
Chemo drugs have also been shown to induce nephrotoxicity, by increasing the production of ROS and inhibiting several antioxidant enzymes to orchestrate kidney oxidative stress injury.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-kidney toxicity induced by chemo-drugs, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane (SF), a natural constituent of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, on Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II, CIS) nephropathy.
In rodents, before treatment with FN, cisplatin therapy triggered marked activation of stress signaling pathways to promote cancer cell death in the kidney by increasing the DNA fragmentation, apoptotic proteins,
Furthermore, CIS also exhibited the terminal associated with attenuation of various prosurvival signaling pathways and increased levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the kidney.
In other words, the injection of CIS not only induced kidney injury but also caused damage to the death of the kidney cells, through several aforementioned mechanisms.
After the administration of SF, all these effects were significantly attenuated by the pretreatment of rodents with SFN.
Based on the evidence, researchers wrote, " SFN is able to prevent the CIS-induced renal injury by modulating these pathways, providing a novel approach for preventing this devastating complication of chemotherapy".
Taken together, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process the potential anti-side effect of CIS in the induction of kidney toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Free-dried Aqueous #Extract from #Cucumber Induces Cytotoxicity in #EsophagealCancer Cells, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Esophageal cancer is a chronic medical condition that arises from the esophagus due to the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of esophageal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the esophagus between the throat and the stomach. At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.
As the tumor continues to grow, patients may experience symptoms of difficulty swallowing, persistent chest pain and pressure, pain-burning sensation, coughing or hoarseness, and heartburn.
If you persistently experience chronic acid reflux, accompanied by some of the aforementioned symptoms, you should check with your doctor immediately to rule out of the possibility of esophageal cancer.
Some patients may also vomit blood if the tumor has pressed onto the nearby blood vessels.
At the advanced stage, the primary cancer cell can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 17,650 adults (13,750 men and 3,900 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer this year, accounting for 1% of cancers diagnosed.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, some researchers suggested patients with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are found to have a strong implication on the disease onset.
Dr. Shaheen N, the lead scientist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hil, wrote, "Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a risk factor for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, rare cancer whose incidence is increasing".
However, "Strong evidence supports the association of GERD and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus; however, the risk of cancer in any given individual with GERD is low".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to discover a potential ingredient for the treatment of esophageal cancer, researchers investigated the possible cytotoxic effect of freeze-dried aqueous extract of E. elaterium fruit on KYSE30 (human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma).
The study included the free dried aqueous extract of the fruits of E. elaterium incubated for 24, 48, and 72 h. on KYSE30 cancer cell lines.
The extracts showed a significant effect in the inhibition of the KYSE30 cell line at IC(50) values at concentrations of 500, 150, and 125 μg/ml after 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively.
According to the EB/AO staining, the extract showed an increase in apoptotic cells of the KYSE30 cell line.
Furthermore, the free-dried aqueous extract of the fruits of E. elaterium exerted a significant increase in cell density at the G2/M phase before inducing cell cycle arrest, according to the cell cycle analysis.
Based on the findings, researchers suggested that the freeze-dried aqueous extract of E. elaterium fruit has a cytotoxic effect on esophageal cancer cell lines via the induction of apoptosis.
Dr. Bohlooli S, the lead scientist wrote, " It seems that several compounds are possibly responsible for the cytotoxic effect of the extract".
In other words, several compounds in the extract worked synergistically to exhibit cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell line.
Taken altogether, cucumber may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Ginger Regulates the Pathways and Suppresses Adipose Expansion and Inflammation Against #Obesity
Kyle J. Norton
Ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of obesity without inducing side effects, some scientists found.
Obesity is a medical disease associated with extreme overweight.
In other words, obesity is the accumulation of excess fat to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on patient health.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese.
What causes obesity? Some researchers suggested that too much calorie consumption and lack of physical exercise are the 2 main causes of obesity in once-healthy individuals.
Some scientists indicated, there is no coincidence but a close correlation between the onset of obesity in a large percentage of Americans and the promotion of the Western diet in the past few decades.
Dr. Bortolin RC, the lead researcher in the obese team in the joint study led by the Instituto de Ciências Básicas da Saúde-Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS in the examine the new animal diet based on human Western diet said, "Obesity is a metabolic disorder that predisposes patients to numerous diseases and has become a major global public health concern".
And, " diet, and not the obese state, was the major driving force behind gut microbiota changes. Moreover, the marked dysbiosis observed in CAF-fed rats might have resulted from the presence of several additives present in the CAF diet or even a lack of essential vitamins and minerals".
These results strongly suggested that the Western diet alters the gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis) probably due to substances found in the Western diet foods, that are not found in other diets, compared to the group treated with HFD developed the greatest dysbiosis independent of obesity
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
On finding natural ingredients or whole food for the treatment of obesity researchers examine the traditional use of ginger in an animal model.
Application of ginger in vivo and in vitro demonstrated a potential anti-obesity effect in regulating the PPARγ signaling pathway in adipocytes in the initiation of obesity,
Diet-induced obesity was attenuated in C57BL/6J mice treated with the dietary ginger extract (GE)also exhibited an increase in energy expenditure.
GE also exerted an anti-obesity effect by promoting the increased number of Types I muscle fibers, running endurance capacity, and upregulated PPARδ-targeted gene expression in skeletal muscle
Furthermore, the cellular respiration assay also revealed that pretreating cultured skeletal muscle myotubes with GE increased palmitate-induced oxygen consumption rate, which suggested an increase in cellular fatty acid catabolism, another anti-obesity activity.
After taking into account co and confounders, researchers said, "6-Shogaol and 6-gingerol (the ginger bioactive constituents)may be responsible for the regulatory effects of dietary ginger on PPARδ signaling".
Moreover, additional investigation of ginger exerts protective on obesity and its complications, researchers showed that ginger enone A, a bioactive compound isolated from ginger had the most potent inhibitory effect on adipogenesis and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells among ginger components at a single concentration (40 μM).
In vitro data, GA attenuates diet-induced obesity (DIO) by reducing fat mass in mice, accompanied by a modulation of fatty acid metabolism via activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in stimulating weight loss, in vitro and in vivo.
Dr.Suk S the lead author said in the final report, " GA may be used as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of obesity and its complications by suppressing adipose expansion and inflammation".
Taken altogether, ginger processed with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food in stimulating weight loss in obese subjects.

#Eggplant #Extract (SME) Modulates the Blood Pressure Associated with the Risk of #HeartDiseases, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Eggplant may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of high blood pressure, some scientists suggested.
Eggplant is a species of S. melongena with deep purple color, belongings to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.
Hypertension is a long term medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.
According to statistics from the World Health Organization, high blood pressure affects 1.13 billion people worldwide and from 1975 to 2015, mean systolic blood pressure and blood pressure have stayed more or less the same in men and have decreased slightly among women.
According to the University of Massachusetts, eggplant containing high fiber and low soluble carbohydrate content and the phenolic-linked antioxidant activity and alpha-glucosidase exerted powerful antioxidant effects in inhibited free radical expression and ROS chain reaction to induce type 2 diabetes' complications such as hypertension.
Further analysis also suggested that functional food also inhibited the angiotensin hormone which has been found to elevate vasoconstriction and increase blood pressure in diabetics.
Dr. Kwon YI, after taking into account of other confounders, suggested. " high angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity (Of eggplant),....... provide a strong biochemical basis for ....... reducing associated hypertension".
Indeed, the recommendation to include a portion of eggplant in daily diet by the National Diabetes Education Program of NIH, Mayo Clinic and American Diabetes Association may be a choice to reduce diabetes complication risk of hypertension.
The illustration strongly indicated that oxidative stress initiated by ROS may place an important role in the risk of diabetes and diabetes hypertension.
Interestingly, in the study to evaluate the cardiovascular action of Solanum melongena extract (SME) in vivo and in vitro, researchers found that the application of SME displays a significant and produced dose-dependent effect in reduced hypertensive responses in normotensive albino rats through the modulated expression of β-adrenoceptor on cardiac and smooth muscle tissues in precipitated high blood pressure.
Additionally, the administration of SME regulated the stimulation of the expression of the muscarinic receptors in reduced high blood pressure as well as improving heart rate.
Furthermore, SME injection also decreased the efficacy of the medication of β-adrenoceptor blocker, propranolol, and the cholinergic receptor blocker, atropine in regulating abnormal heart rhythms, and to protect the heart from a second heart attack (myocardial infarction) after a first heart attack (secondary prevention).
In other words, increasing doses of β-adrenoceptor blocker, propranolol, and the cholinergic receptor blocker may be necessary to achieve the same effect in reducing the risk of heart attack with the intake of eggplant.
More precisely, researchers suggested that SME modulated high blood pressure through induction of vaso-relaxation and negative inotropy and mediation of the β-adrenergic and acetylcholine receptors in promoted vasodilation of the resistant vessels and a reduction in heart activity, respectively.
Conclusively, in comparison to Captopril, a hypertensive medicine, researchers also indicated that possibly, the hypotensive effect of SME could be attributed to SME influence on the activity of the renin-angiotensin system, which is a hormone system with function in regulated blood pressure and fluid balance.
In fact, the effect of eggplant in the regulated function of diuresis in the renin-angiotensin system may result in an ameliorated risk of high blood pressure as diuretics were found to associate to the function of kidneys in removal of more sodium and water from the body, triggering relaxation of the blood vessel walls, thereby lowering blood pressure.
Taken together, eggplant and its phytochemicals may be considered a functional food processed a therapeutic and potential effect in reducing the risk of hypertension naturally.
