Esophagus, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads food from the pharynx to the stomach.
Esophageal cancer is a medical condition that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the esophageal tissue caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
The most common types of esophageal cancer are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Adenocarcinoma arises from the glands in the mucosa, and squamous cell carcinoma begins in flat cells lining the esophagus.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.
Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.
According to the Cancer Genome Atlas Research Network Group (TCGA), gastric cancer can be classified into four subtypes: EBV-positive tumors, microsatellite unstable tumors (MSI), genomically stable tumors (GS) and tumors with chromosomal instability (CIN).
The stages of both subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer can be classified into
1. Stage 0,
If the cancerous cell has not penetrated deeper tissue but on the surface of the inside lining of the stomach.
2. Stage I
In stage, I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface but have invaded into deep the inside stomach lining but are still completely inside the stomach
a. Stage IA
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1:
The spreading is not less than 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2:
The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.b.
Stage IB:
Cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1:
Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2:
Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)
3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the stomach lining.
4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the stomach lining.
5. Stage IVIn this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately outside of the stomach to distant parts of the body.
In findings of a natural whole for the prevention of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer, researchers examined the association between vegetables and fruits consumption and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) and gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma (GNCA).
According to the results of the Netherlands Cohort Study in 1986, 120,852 Dutch men and women aged 55-69 filled out a questionnaire on diet and other cancer risk factors, and after 16.3 years of follow-up,
* Total vegetable consumption was nonsignificantly inversely associated with EAC and ESCC risk, but not with GCA and GNCA risk.
More precisely, Significant inverse associations were observed forraw vegetables and EAC risk [RR per 25 g/day: 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68-0.98], and Brassica vegetables and GCA risk (RR per 25 g/day: 0.72, 95% CI 0.54-0.95).
* Total fruit consumption was associated with a nonsignificantly decreased EAC risk.
Particularly, citrus fruits were inversely associated with EAC and GCA risk (RRs for highest vs. lowest intake: 0.55, 95% CI 0.31-0.98 and 0.38, 95% CI 0.21-0.69, respectively).
More Profoundly, for current smokers, vegetables and possibly also fruit intake was inversely associated with ESCC and EAC risk.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Consumption of (specific groups of) vegetables and fruits may protect against subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer".
Taken altogether, regular intake of vegetables and fruits may prevent the onset of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Omega3 Fatty Acids Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Risk of #Weightgain and #Obesity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.
According to the BMI index, a person is considered overweight, if he/she has a BMI between 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more is an indication of obesity.
In other words, obesity is a progressive chronic disease characterized by abnormal fat accumulation in the body tissues that may impair health.
According to the statistics provided by the National Center for Health Statistics (2015-2016), in the US, approximately 39.8% of adults aged 20 and over were obese accompanied by another 31.8% overweight.
Visceral fat obesity is associated with 90% of patients with ischemic heart disease. In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.
Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.
Similar to other chronic medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure, obesity has recently become a serious health problem.
Epidemiologically, obesity does not only have serious effects on physical and psychological health but also has a strongly negative impact on the patient's quality of life.
Today, the widespread obesity in the US population has caused a significant economic impact on the U.S. healthcare system, including direct and indirect costs.
Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.
The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with obesity, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid activity in the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
According to the results of the study,* Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids elicit divergent effects on body fat gain through mechanisms associated with the risk of weight gain, including adipogenesis, browning of adipose tissue, lipid homeostasis, and brain-gut-adipose tissue axis.
* Omega 3 fatty acids also modulated the immune response in the stimulation of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
* Furthermore, the risk of obesity is increased if the level of omega-6 fatty acids and the omega-6/omega-3 ratio was increased in red blood cell (RBC) membrane phospholipids.
* However, the high omega-3 RBC membrane phospholipids were associated with a decreased risk of obesity.
Moreover, researchers said, "In addition to absolute amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid intake, the omega-6/omega-3 ratio plays an important role in increasing the development of obesity via both AA eicosanoid metabolites and hyperactivity of the cannabinoid system, which can be reversed with increased intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). A balanced omega-6/omega-3 ratio is important for health and in the prevention and management of obesity".
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Artichoke #Reduces #Plasma Lipid Levels by Inhibiting the Levels of Both Total and LDL-C, and Triglycerides, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Triglycerides are body fat found in humans derived from glycerol and saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells for energy in the future when the body needs it.
Unlike cholesterol produced by the liver and absorbed through diet to build cell walls, produce steroid hormone and vitamin D, and aid digestion, the primary triglycerides function is to store as unused calories and provide your body with energy.
From a health perspective, the levels of triglycerides can affect your health and risk of cardiovascular disease.
1. Normal, if your level is less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or less than 1.7 millimoles per liter (mmol/L)
2. Borderline high if your level is between 150 and 199 mg/dL (1.8 and 2.2 mmol/L)
3. High, if your level is between 200 and 499 mg/dL (2.3 and 5.6 mmol)
4. Very high, if your level is above 500 mg/dL (above 5.7 mmol/L)
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of obesity investigated the artichoke extract anti overexpression of triglycerides by reviewing the medical literature online.
From the databases of PubMed-Medline, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases up to March 28, 2017, RCTs satisfied the standard criteria, and guidelines were selected for the investigation of the impact of artichoke extracts on plasma lipid levels.
According to the Meta-analysis of data from 9 trials including 702 subjects artichoke extract showed significant activity against the overexpression of plasma concentrations, including lowering the triglycerides by -9.2 mg/dL.
The injection of artichoke extract according to the selected studies did not exert any impact on the levels of high-density lipoprotein, compared to the strong effect on lowering the levels of low-density lipoprotein.
These results suggested that the artichoke supplement reduced plasma lipid levels by inhibiting the levels of both total and LDL-C, and triglycerides.
Furthermore, in order to reveal more details of the artichoke effect on triglycerides, researchers examined fecal excretion of neutral bile acids and sterols in subjects after the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) intake.
The animal model study included 64 Golden Syrian hamsters (8 weeks old) fed randomly either a control diet or a similar diet containing ALE (4.5 g/kg diet) for 6 weeks.
According to the observation up to day 21, ALE injection showed no significant changes in plasma lipid levels, including non-HDL cholesterol triglycerides or fecal-neutral sterols.
However, after day 42, ALE exerted a clinical significance in lowing the levels of triglycerides by 22% in males and 29% in female hamsters, compared to control.
The findings strongly suggested that ALE processes anti-triglycerides accumulation by a mechanism involving the greater excretion of fecal bile acids and neutral sterols after feeding for 42 days.
According to the accumulated information, it is safe to say that artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of elevated non-HDL cholesterol triglycerides with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study

#Ginger Induces Airway Smooth Muscle Relaxation to Decrease the Symptoms of #Asthma, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a pungent spice for the treatment of airway hyperresponsiveness in asthmatic patients, according to the studies.
Airway hyperresponsiveness is a hallmark of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by the exaggerated response of the airways to nonspecific stimuli.
Asthma is a respiratory disease associated caused by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, leading to symptoms of difficulty in breathing. In other words, asthma is a disease as the result of an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.
Asthma attacks can be dangerous, if not treated immediately. In an asthma attack, the airways become swollen and inflamed, leading to the overproduction of mucus, which causes the narrowing of the airway.
According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in the US, or more than 26 million people have asthma, with 8.3 percent of adults and 8.3 percent of children.
The exact cause of asthma is not known. But exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens), including airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander are the most common prevalent risk factors.
Some researchers suggested that widespread obesity may be correlated to the rise of asthmatic cases over the past few decades.
Dr. Sveta Mohanan and colleagues in examing the pathophysiology and implications of obesity and asthma in primary care centers wrote, "Mainstream clinical practice has yet to adopt aggressive management of obesity as a modifiable risk factor in asthma care, as is the case with a risk factor like tobacco or allergen exposure".
And, "Our review suggests that evidence of chronic inflammatory response linking obesity and asthma indicates a need to address obesity during asthma management, possibly using patient-centered approaches such as shared decision making".
The findings strongly indicated a link between obesity and the risk of asthma.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of respiratory infection with no side effects evaluated the ginger activity on airway smooth muscle relaxation and calcium regulation.
In isolated human ASM, researchers found that ginger caused significant and rapid relaxation.
In both guinea pig and human tracheas, injection of [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol induced rapid relaxation of precontracted ASM (100–300 μM) compared to [10]-gingerol failure in the induction of relaxation.
In human ASM cells, exposure to [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol, blunted subsequent Ca2+ responses to bradykinin (10 μM) and S-(−)-Bay K 8644 (10 μM) associated with the reuptake in airway smooth muscle compared to no response of the [10]-gingerol at a concentration of 100 μM.
Furthermore, in A/J mice, the nebulization of [8]-gingerol (100 μM), 15 minutes before methacholine challenge, significantly attenuated airway resistance, compared with vehicle.
These results suggested that not all compounds from ginger experts have a respiratory protective effect through inducing airway smooth muscle relaxation, thus decreasing the symptoms of asthma.
Dr. Elizabeth A. Townsend, the lead scientist said, "These novel data show that ginger and its isolated active components, [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol, relax ASM, and [8]-gingerol attenuates airway hyperresponsiveness, in part by altering [Ca2+] I regulation".
In order to reveal more information about ginger relaxed airway smooth muscle (ASM) activity, researchers examined the 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, or 6-shogaol bioactive compounds found in ginger potentiate β-agonist-induced ASM relaxation.
In human ASM, the airway issues were relaxed dose-dependently with β-agonist, isoproterenol, in the presence of vehicles, 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, or 6-shogaol (100 μM).
Significant potentiation of isoproterenol-induced relaxation was observed with each of the ginger constituents. 6-Shogaol showed the largest shift in isoproterenol half-maximal effective concentration.
6-Gingerol, 8-gingerol, or 6-shogaol significantly inhibited PDE4D-involved smooth muscle contractility, whereas 8-gingerol and 6-shogaol also inhibited phospholipase C β activity also involved constriction of smooth muscle.
The findings strongly suggested that Isolated components of ginger potentiate βagonist-induced relaxation in human ASM.
Taken together, ginger processed a number of bioactive compounds that may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of asthmatic symptoms through attenuating air hyperresponsiveness.

Herbal #Cleaver Extract Inhibits #Resistant-#LaryngealCancer in Vitro, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
The larynx is also known as the voice box, located between the pharynx and the trachea. Its function is to ensure the airways open when we breathe and talk and closed when we swallow to ensure no food gets into the trachea.
Laryngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the larynx. The cancer cells may spread to other tissues and organs in the late stage via lymph and blood circulation.
The exact cause of laryngeal cancer is unknown. Researchers do not know why people in the same family with the same health conditions and gender, are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.
However, they do know that certain risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, unhealthy diet, family history, HPV infection, and long-term exposure to some chemicals including wood dust, soot coal dust, and paint fumes can increase the risk of cancer.
Genetic mutation inherited from the parents, such as TP53, GSTM3, and NAT2, and long-term use of some medication, such as immune-suppressive drugs to fight off infections such as HIV or AIDs is considered the prevalent risk factor for the disease development.
The most common symptoms of the larynx (Voice Box) cancer include
* Hoarseness or other voice changes
Due to malignant cells have invaded the vocal cords.
* A cough that doesn't go away or stridor
Due to blocking of the airway.
* Breathing difficulties
The tumor has grown large enough to block off the airway.
* Ear pain
The tumor has pressed onto the nerve.
*A lump or mass in the neck or throat
Cancer has invaded the nearby lymph nodes in the neck and throat.
* Coughing up of blood
Breaking off of some malignant cells.
Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belongings to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as a mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stones, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers investigated a Galium verum decoction in chemosensitive (Hep-2 and HLaC79) and chemoresistant, P-glycoprotein-overexpressing (Hep2-Tax, HLaC79-Tax) laryngeal carcinoma cell lines.
According to the results from the detailed spheroid-based 3D invasion analysis of Hep2 and Hep2-Tax in semisolid collagen gels and on different extracellular matrix coatings, Galium decoction proved to be even more pronounced in the more aggressively invading chemoresistant Hep2-Tax cell line compared to the administration of Galium aqueous extract.
Furthermore, the application of decoction also inhibited the expression of the enzyme gelatinolytic activity produced by the MMP-2 in three of the four cell lines without affecting the angiogenesis in the tested cell lines.
Interestingly, Galium decoction demonstrated an anti-HLaC79 and Hep2, Hep2-Tax, and HLaC79-Taxactivity with no influencing unique pathway activation.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " the intake of HCA has preventive effects on bone loss in STZ-diabetic rats, and that the intake has partially restorative effects on serum biochemical findings in the diabetic state".
Taken together, herbal cleaver may be considered as an anti-resistant laryngeal cancer remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel Powder #Extract, and Oil Inhibit Serum Nitric Oxide (NO) and Kidney #Malondialdehyde (MDA)Induced Oxidativestress through Its Antioxidant Activity
Kyle J. Nortn
Fennel may have a potential and positive effect of eliminating excess water and toxin from our body, some scientists suggested.
Diuresis is a medicine with a function to stimulate increased production of urine.
Detoxification is a process of eliminated toxin accumulation from our bodies. In some cases, the function may only target some specific organs, such as kidneys, liver,..... and lungs.
According to traditional medicine, detoxification is a necessary process to enhance and optimize the functions of our body by cleansing away substances that may reduce or cause harm to our body organs and tissue.
According to the Tao of Wellness in the address of the importance of detoxification of Traditional Chinese Medicine wrote, " Our body is automatically programmed to cleanse itself daily. However, with our fast-paced modern lifestyle and exposure to an increasing number of harmful and toxic substances, our body’s natural cleansing ability has become overworked and compromised" and "Many signs and symptoms attributed to stress are now being linked to exposure from harmful substances such as PCBs, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and mercury in food and liquids as well as dioxins and formaldehyde in the air".
Truly, harmful and toxic substances not removed from our body may have substantially negative implications to cause many serious illnesses, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases,..... and reproductive ailments.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and depressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
In an animal model, according to John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. in the evaluation of the re-toxic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare var dulce (D.C) root, researchers found that application of the extract exerts a significant activity in flushing out of excess water and toxin from the body through increased kidney function in secretion of fluids.
The result of these properties was observed by an increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion.
The efficacy in the cleansing body was also found linearly in dose dependent manner.
Continuously, in further examine the efficacy of fennel powder, extract, and oil on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity through a study of a total of 35 adult female Sprague Dawley rats classified into five groups with the first group kept on the standard diet all over the period of the experiment. and the other groups were administered gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day for 7 days i.p), followed by either control (+ve) group or treated groups with fennel powder, extract, and oil for 45 days, at the end of the study, researchers found that
* Injected gentamicin group served as control and exhibited strong nephrotoxicity manifested by increasing levels of kidney function indicator, serum nitric oxide (NO), and kidney malondialde(MDA) however, this group of rats also exerted a significant decrease in weight gain.
Increased expression of serum nitric oxide (NO) and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of severe oxidative stress caused by an imbalance of the ratio of ROS and antioxidants in the host.
* Gentamicin groups treated with fennel powder, extract, and oil demonstrated an improve the levels of urea and uric acid in comparison to control (+ve) and displayed an improvement of antioxidant enzymes, serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, and glutathione transferase (GST) and decrease of serum NO in compared to control (+ve) group.
These results addressed the important antioxidant effect of fennel extracts.
Furthermore, the applications not only inhibited the levels of free radicals and their' chain-reactive activities but also stimulated the production of antioxidants found in the host tissue.
* Moreover, the group treated with fennel oil restored the normal values of kidney antioxidant enzymes compared with the normal group and other treatment groups.
Dr. Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri, the lead author, after taking into account of other co and confounders said, "Fennel powder, extract, and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats".
Clearly, fennel oil exhibited the greatest effect in stimulating kidney function to detox the body toxins through increased secretion of urine compared to other experimental groups.
The results of this study clearly indicate that fennel powder, extract, and oil are potent antioxidants that ameliorate the levels of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.
Interestingly, in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) treated with either water extract of Marrubium vulgare L. or Foeniculum vulgare L. in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), researchers showed that application of fennel water extract reduces hypertension through Foeniculum increased water, sodium, and potassium excretion in compared to no effect of Marrubium treated group.
Additionally, in comparison to Marrubium extract reduced hypertension through inhibited contractile responses, fennel restored normal; blood pressure by increased urine secretion and ameliorated the overexpression of ROS and increased antioxidant status in the host.
Surely, one can say that Foeniculum acts mainly as a diuretic and a natriuretic while Marrubium displays vascular relaxant activity.
Taken together, fennel and its extracts may be considered a kidney-detoxed functional food in getting rid of body toxins through its diuretic activities.
