Cholesterol produced by the liver and from dietary sources is needed for the cell to build a strong membrane, produce steroid hormone, bile acids, and vitamin D and aid the digestive functioning.
Most people with high blood cholesterol at an early do not experience any symptoms, however, as the levels of blood cholesterol continue to grow, at some points, patients may experience heart-related symptoms, including chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by reduced blood flow to the legs.
In serious cases, elevated blood cholesterol can also induce symptoms of stroke and heart attack.
There are 2 types of blood cholesterol
* Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) also is known as “bad cholesterol”. Bad cholesterol is a major cause of plaque build-up in the arteries and a leading cause of coronary heart disease.
*High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good cholesterol”. HDL removes LDL cholesterol from your arteries back to the liver.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 LDL)/ 1HLD
Besides a high-fat diet, certain risk factors such as a family history of high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and some health conditions including diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease have been found to increase the risk of high blood cholesterol.
Epidemiological studies also suggested that a high level of blood cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
The endothelium is a thin membrane that lines the inside of the heart and blood vessels. The endothelium cells process an essential function in controlling vascular relaxation and contraction.
Furthermore, the endothelium cells also control enzymes associated with blood clotting, immune function, and platelet adhesion.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostate diseases, researchers examined the effect of chronic cranberry juice consumption on cholesterol profiles and vascular functions in an estrogen-deficient animal model.
The study included ovariectomized rats that were treated daily with commercial cranberry juice at 7 mg/kg for 8 weeks, a dosage comparable to recent clinical studies.
According to the tested analysis, cranberry juice consumption reduced circulating levels of total cholesterol, triacylglycerols, HDL, nHDL, and nHDL/HDL ratio.
Furthermore, cranberry juice consumption improved endothelium-dependent relaxation in the aorta of ovariectomized rats by restoring p-eNOS level (endothelial nitric oxide synthase.
Overexpression of renin-angiotensin system markers (angiotensin-converting enzyme, angiotensin II, and angiotensin II type 1 receptor) associated with blood pressure was also inhibited by commercial cranberry juice.
Furthermore, commercial cranberry juice also normalizes the elevated NAD(P)H oxidase expression and oxidative stress involved in the increased levels of ROS.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded. " the novel cardiovascular benefits of cranberry juice consumption in improving both vascular functions and cholesterol profiles".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Chloroform Fraction of #Herbal #Fennel Causes Apoptosis and Antiproliferation of #Cancer Cells, Scientists Show
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a whole food or herb with the potential to activate the protein that programs the death of cancer cells, some studies found.
Cell death is a natural process to warrant the normal development of cells and the cell cycle maturation and maintain the normal function body in the optimized state.
However, some microorganisms are found to process the activity in triggering cell death for their own survival.
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a function of the immune system that evolved as a rapid and irreversible process to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells, including cells that were damaged by the alternation of DNA or infection
Cancer apoptosis is an action that causes cancer cells to die off with or without affecting the nearby cells.
Some herbal medicine such as fennel was shown to induce the function of overexpression of levels of free radical in initiating a cytotoxic effect that targets cancer cells while protecting the healthy cells through its antioxidant activity.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
Herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
In the study to investigate several herbal plants ethanol extracts from fruits of their apoptotic activity from fruits of seven species of Apiaceae family, namely, Eryngium planum, Archangelica officinalis, Pastinaca sativa, Heracleum sibiricum, Carum carvi, Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), and Levisticum officinale against ML-1—human acute myeloblastic leukemia, J-45.01—human acute T cell leukemia, EOL—human eosinophilic leukemia, HL-60—human Caucasian promyelocytic leukemia, 1301—human T cell leukemia lymphoblast, C-8166—human T cell leukemia, U-266B1—human myeloma, WICL—human Caucasian normal B cell, and H-9—human T cell, researchers found that
* The ethanol extract from fruit F. Vulgare shows the highest mortality in the Trypan blue test for the J45 cell line with 4% of viable cells and a C8166 cell line with 100% of mortality.
* The extract also shows the highest viability in other cell lines, including the HL60 at 60%, EOL at 48%, and ML1 at 42%. The normal cell line H9 and WICL showed 35% and 25% of viable cells, respectively.
Furthermore, the reaffirm the use of fennel in traditional cancer treatment, researchers at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU), launched a study to demonstrate the antiproliferative and apoptotic effect of chloroform fraction of fennel (CFF) in MCF-7 cells.
Application of fennel showed to inhibit the growth against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-237 in time- and concentration-dependent manners.
Fennel-induced apoptosis of around 49% at the doses of 0.5 mg/ml of CFF and PI-stained cells showed the G1 phase cell cycle arrest, according to the Annexin V/PI assay.
More importantly, the application of fennel also was found to reduce the elevated levels of ROS, disrupted mitochondrial membrane and increased levels of caspase-9 & caspase-3, and DNA fragmentation in the promotion of MCF-7 cell death. experiment
Dr. Syed FQ, the lead author in the final assessment of the experiment said, "(The results) revealed the proliferation inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction effect of CFF, which may help in exploring the novel anti-cancer drug for therapeutic implications".
Moreover, in the study to examine whether anethole, a major bioactive compound found in fennel, anise, and camphor processes anti-metastatic and apoptotic effects on highly-metastatic HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma tumor cells, researchers found that
* Despite weak cytotoxicity against HT-1080 cells, anethole inhibits the adhesion to Matrigel and invasion of HT-1080 cells in a dose-dependent manner.
* Anethole is also able to down-regulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 with anti-apoptotic function and up-regulate the gene expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 with apoptotic function.
Finally, anethole significantly decreased mRNA expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), but not uPA receptor (uPAR) in the facilitated cancer cell death.
Taken all together, fennel alone or its extracts and bioactive compound anethole may be considered adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers

#Turmeric/Curcumin Both Oral and Topical Shows a Significant Effect on #SkinHealth, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Skin, the large external organ in the human body is the outer layer, with a total area of about 20 square feet which protects the internal organs, bones, and tissues against damage.
The skin processes 3 main layers
* Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin providing a barrier against infection from environmental pathogens. The outer layers also regulate the amount of water released from the body through transepidermal water loss.
* Dermis is the second layer of skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.
* The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat which has been found to process the protective effect against the dangers of visceral fat.
Skin health refers to the use of material or agents, including topical and oral herbal remedies with the function to protect the skin cell against environmentally harmful substances, including sun UV light, and microbial infection.
Some researchers suggested that by providing enough nutrition to the skin cells we can maintain healthy skin. In other words, macronutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, and micronutrients such as vitamins and essential minerals all work together to maintain healthy skin.
More precisely, we can maintain healthy skin by eating a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise and avoiding exposure of skin to harmful substances.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the enhancement of skin health, researchers examined the active component of turmeric, curcumin used medically to treat a variety of dermatologic diseases in traditional medicine.
The search involved the relationship between products containing turmeric, curcumin, and skin health in the medical databases of PubMed and Embase databases and found a total of 234 articles with only 18 studies meeting inclusion criteria.
According to the identified studies, ingestion, topical use, and combined ingestion and topical use showed a statistically significant improvement in skin disease severity in the turmeric/curcumin treatment groups compared with control groups, including conditions of acne, alopecia, atopic dermatitis, facial photoaging, oral lichen planus, pruritus, psoriasis, radiodermatitis, and vitiligo.
Dr. Vaughn AR, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounder wrote in the final report, "Overall, there is early evidence that turmeric/curcumin products and supplements, both oral and topical, may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health".
In order to reveal more information about curcumin in skin protection, researchers investigated the antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties against skin diseases.
According to the tested assays, curcumin exerted protective effects against skin damage caused by chronic ultraviolet B radiation.
Curcumin application also has a strong effect on the protection against skin aging and disorders such as psoriasis, infection, acne, skin inflammation, and skin cancer.
Taken together, turmeric may be considered a supplement for skin health with no side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

[6]-SHO) and 6-Gingerol Found in #Ginger Exerts Cytotoxic, Antiproliferative and Apoptosic Effects on #OralCancer, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Oral cancer also known as mouth cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the oral cavity, due to the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of oral cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of oral tissue.
However, at the advanced stage, oral cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 51,540 people were diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The disease causes the death of an estimated 10,030 people.
The 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is 66%, including all stages.
Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, infection by the HPV virus, poor hygiene, and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.
Some researchers suggested that oral sex may be one of the major prevalent risk factors involved in the development of oral cancer. Dr. Rajiv Saini in the examination of the connection between oral sex and oral cancer, wrote, "The diverse conduit in the oral cavity that provides as a gateway of exposure of infection from the oral cavity to bloodstream include any open sores, cuts, abrasions, or bleeding gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis".
"Accumulating molecular and pathologic evidence has strengthened the hypothesis that HPV infection could play a role in the etiology of some oral squamous cell carcinomas.
And, "To reduce the risk of infection during unprotected oral sex, limit exposure to sexual fluids and ensure that no cuts or lesions are present in the mouth or on the genitals. Good oral health, free from bleeding gums, lip sores, cuts, broken skin, and oral epithelium, enormously reduces the chances of transmission of infection among the partners indulging in oral sex".
These results strongly suggested people who perform oral sex before, during, and after sexual intercourse may be at risk of oral cancer due to being infected by the HPV virus.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the inhibition of oral cancer examined the [6]-Shogaol ([6]-SHO), a major constituent of ginger anti-tumor activity.
[6]-SHO showed a significant effect in preventing oral squamous cell carcinoma by activating proapoptotic factors in vitro and in vivo experimental models.
In the inflammation and cell proliferation assays, injection of [6]-SHO inhibited the oral cancer cell line through cytotoxicity induced by the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, proteins associated with cell apoptosis, and anti-cell survival mechanisms.
Furthermore, in the oral cancer cells, oral administration of [6]-SHO strongly inhibited phosphorylation in stimulating the enzymes which carry energy to the cancer cells and enzymes in the degradation of cellular response to inflammation.
Dr. Annamalai G, the lead scientist said, " [6]-SHO is a novel functional agent capable of preventing DMBA-induced inflammation and cell proliferation-associated tumorigenesis by modulating multiple signaling molecules".
Additionally, in order to reveal more information about 6-Gingerol anti-oral cancer properties, researchers investigated the compound in human oral (SCC4, KB) with or without wortmannin, rapamycin, and cisplatin.
6-Gingerol showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity in the oral cell line.
Combinations of 6-gingerol with wortmannin and cisplatin showed additive effects, while rapamycin, it showed 50% cytotoxicity equivalent to that of IC50 of 6-gingerol alone.
Treatment with 6-gingerol exhibited S-phase arrest in SCC4 cells. But 6-Gingerol, wortmannin, and rapamycin treatment showed almost two-fold higher expression of proteins associated with cancer cell apoptosis.
Dr. in the final report wrote," 6-gingerol appears to be a safe and potent chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive compound acting through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in human oral....cells".
Taken altogether, ginger processed bioactive ingredient 6-gingerol and [6]-Shogaol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal Chaste Tree Berry Seeds Inhibits Cytokines and Enzymes Associated with Relieving #Symptoms of #Arthritis, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.
Arthritis, a common condition of pain and inflammation in the joints, the tissues, affects 54 million people in the US annually alone, according to the 2013-15 statistics.
In Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis (AA) in a rat model. oral administration of treatment of Chaste Tree Berry seed expressed a strongly inhibited paw edema, reversed weight loss, and decreased arthritis score.
According to the Second Military Medical University, the efficacy of herbal medicine for the treatment of arthritis is the result in inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and in the regulation of enzymes responsible for inflammation and pain. expression.
In support of the above, researchers in the examined histopathological studies found that Chaste Tree Berry showed a remarkable inhibition effect in decreased synovial inflammatory infiltration and synovial lining hyperplasia in the joints in animal models.
Some also researchers suggested that Chaste tree berry reduced symptoms of the pain of arthritis patients probably is associated with the blocking the stimulus by sensory neurons ability through mediating anti-inflammatory activity and interacted with the opioid system.
Taken together, Chaste Tree Berry (seed) processed analgesic properties may be used as therapeutic potential in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of inflammatory arthritis. A large amount of intake can only be prescribed by herbalists.

#Khellactone Derivatives Found in #Herbal #Angelica Process Apoptotic and Anti-Proliferative Activity, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a group of medical and chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of specific organs in the body.
Over time, the alternative cells-induced tumor may become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, depending on the grade of the tumor.
At the later stage, the most invasive tumor can induce secondary metastasis by spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.
According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes, according to the data from 2013–2015.
In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer, and 1,790 died of the disease.
In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited to grow through many mechanisms, including the use of chemo drugs.
From the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.
A suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.
The programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induce cell death by either inducing apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.
In phytochemicals, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants which stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Angelica phytochemical (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone from A. purpuraefolia on cell proliferation and apoptotic cell death.
In 4 breast (MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, HS578T, and T47D), three cervical (HeLa, SiHa, and C33A) cancer cell lines, and NIH 3T3 normal cells used for the experiment, researchers found that
* (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone treatment suppresses the growth and proliferation of cancer cells at a relatively low concentration (<10 μg/ml).
* The phytochemical also induces cancer cell apoptosis at a high concentration (>50 μg/ml).
* At the concentration of 10 μg/ml, the chemical compounds also exerted a strong cell cycle arrest in the S/G2 phase.
Furthermore, according to the Western blot analysis, a concentration higher than 50 μg/ml of (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone increased the large percentage of apoptotic cells in a time-dependent manner.
Interestingly, while the (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone uses both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways to induce apoptosis, the but (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone uses only an intrinsic pathway for the same results.
In other words, the (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone also inhibited the in vitro proliferation of six other human breast and cervical cancer cell lines with different pathways.
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Our data strongly suggest that (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone act as an anti-cancer supplement particularly against breast and cervical cancers by inducing cell cycle arrest in the S/G2 phase and caspase-dependent apoptosis at relatively low and high concentrations, respectively".
Taken together, Herbal Angelica processes anti-proliferative activity against cancer, pending larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lentil Optimizes the Immune Response Against Pathogenic Infection Throuh Its Antiinflammatory Activity, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Lentil may have a profound and positive effect on modulated immune response in the acute phase of infection, some scientists suggested.
Lentil is a type of pulse and tiny legume that can be cooked quickly and is rich in protein and fiber, belongings genus Lens of the Fabaceae family, native to the Middle East.
An immune response is a natural reaction of the immune system to protect our body against the invasion of foreign substances.
In the acute phase of infection, the immune system initiated the production of proinflammatory Th1 cytokines in activated interleukin-12 (IL-12) and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and other pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF beta in response to detect, engulf and destroy pathogens and apoptotic cells through macrophages.
These activities played an important in inducing apoptosis and reducing the proliferation of bacteria or viruses by attaching to the surface of the injured cells to initiation of alternation. however, overproduction of pro-inflammatory expression may indeed cause substantial adverse effects in tissue destruction, and, in some cases, shock and death.
Type 1 T helper (Th1) in response to tissue damage and injury also activated macrophages which are responsible for cell-mediated immunity and phagocyte-dependent protective activity.
In the concerns of lectins, adverse effects may pose a potential threat to consumers due to their capacity to induce histamine release from basophils, after investigating over 16 common dietary produced containing lectins researchers found that most plant lectins induce human basophils to produce interleukin 4 (IL-4) anti-inflammatory cytokine, which plays an important role in the stimulated secretion of T cells and IL-13 another cytokines works conjunction with IL-4 in promoted the expression of T helper 2 (Th2) responses and regulation of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) synthesis.
All these expressed a significant effect of dietary lectin in reduced over-expression of pro-inflammatory factors in the immune system during the acute phase of infection in induced further cell damage and death in the infectious site through secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines without decreasing the immune protective activities.
Truly, further examination also found that concanavalin A, lentil lectin, and phytohemagglutinin, , triggered basophils to release IL-4 at concentrations of up to 1 ng/10(6) basophils which in turn orchestrated the release of IL-13 and histamine and levels of IL-4 and IL-13 release reached a maximum after 4-6 h and more than 18 h, after injection,, respectively.
These activities demonstrated a significant effect of lentil lectin in inducing early IL-4 required to switch the immune response towards a Th2 response and type I allergy, involving immunoglobulin E (IgE)–mediated release of histamine and other mediators from mast cells and basophils.
Indeed, the relative balance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines appears crucial, as Th1 cells activated immune response during the early stage of body injury or damage through evoking cell-mediated immunity and phagocyte-dependent inflammation, in stimulated production of several pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon (IFN)-gamma, interleukin (IL)-2 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-beta which may also cause damage to the cell of the infectious region, leading to permanently additional damage to the tissues and Th2, under response to overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated the production of IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-9, IL-10, and IL-13 of anti-inflammatory cytokines in evoked strong antibody responses (including those of the IgE class) and eosinophil accumulation, and inhibited several functions of phagocytic cells as indicated above.
Taken together, Lentil lectin may have an anti-inflammatory effect in reducing the over-expression of pro-inflammatory factors in the initiation of symptoms of fever, headache, swelling, redness, loss of appetite, and muscle stiffness.
