#Omega3 Fatty Acids Alter the Parameters Associated with Inflammation and Onset of Cancer in Obese, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a woman's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast density is a term that refers to relatively high amounts of glandular tissue and fibrous connective tissue and relatively low amounts of fatty tissue in the breast seen by a mammogram.

Besides genetic preposition, younger age women, women with a lower-body max index, and taking hormone therapy in menopausal women have been found to have higher breast density.

Epidemiologically, women who have a high breast density are at an increased risk of breast cancer. Therefore, this group of women is recommended to have regular mammogram testing beginning at age 40 and consider repeating the screening annually.

Breast cancer is a medical condition associated with abnormal cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the breast either from the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the early stage of breast cancer, most patients experience the forming of lumps or modules on the breast or nearby breast tissue.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of swelling of all or part of a breast, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, and large lumps on the breast.

Some invasive breast cancer in this stage can also induce secondary metastasis through the blood and fluids circulation.

According to the statistic, women diagnosed with breast cancer at stages 0 and 1 have 5 years of survival rate of 100%. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers compared the effects of Lovaza (n-3FA) on breast density in obese and nonobese women.

According to the Isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) method used to analyze plasma from obese and lean women at each time point (baseline, 12 and 24 months, n = 10 per group), several differentially expressed proteins (hemopexin precursor, vitamin D binding protein isoform 1 precursor [VDBP], fibronectin isoform 10 precursors [FN], and α-2 macroglobulin precursor [A2M]) associated with inflammatory expression and breast cancer risk.

More precisely, according to the Western blot analysis, n-3FA administration alters the expression of parameters associated with inflammation and exerted tumor protective activity in obese, including the aforementioned proteins.

Moreover, the posthoc analysis also revealed that n-3FA administration reduced BD selectively in obese postmenopausal women.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of breast cancer by reducing breast density, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Greentea's Polyphenols (GTP) and #EGCG Inhibit Several Parameters in Patients with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be considered as a functional food in lower risk and treatment for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a respectable institute opinionated.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is a condition caused by over-accumulated fat in the liver.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "excessive yin syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will solve the aversion.

According to the University of Connecticut, Storrs, the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with polyphenolic catechins in the induction of hypolipidemic, thermogenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.

These chemical compounds have also been found to mitigate the occurrence and progression of NAFLD.

Dr. Masterjohn C, the lead author said, "(The phytochemical compounds) demonstrating the hepatoprotective properties of green tea and its catechins and the proposed mechanisms by which these targeted dietary agents protect against NAFLD"

Furthermore, in mice fed on a high-fat diet for 24 weeks., then injected with EGCG (10, 20 and 40 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1), ip), for 4 weeks, researchers found that treated mice showed a significant improvement of a high-fat diet in induced the body weight, grade 2 or 3 liver fatty degeneration (steatosis, lobular inflammation, and ballooning), severe hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance.

The phytochemicals EGCG, in dose-dependent, also enhanced insulin clearance and upregulated IDE protein expression and enzyme activity in regulated levels of glucose in the liver of treated mice.

In fact, EGCG not only promoted weight loss but also attenuated symptoms of mice with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Promisingly, in the study of green tea polyphenols (GTP) on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Zucker fatty (ZF) rats, researchers also indicated that GTP intervention not only decreased weight gain and significantly lowered visceral fat but also reduced fasting serum insulin, glucose and lipids levels, through ameliorated expression of hepatic TG accumulation and cytoplasmic lipid droplet as well as diminished hepatic lipogenesis and triglycerides out flux from liver.

Taken together, green tea has expressed a significant enhancement in reduced risk and treatment of
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, through many aspects. But large amounts of intake regularly should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

#Ethanolic #Extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha Demonstrates Anti-Hyperuricemic Activity Through Its Anti-Hyperuricemic and Anti-Inflammatory Properties in Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Anti-hyperuricemic activity is the process including the use of anti-Xanthine oxidase inhibitors to reduce the levels of uric acid levels in the body.

Uric acid, the form of ions and salts is a by-product of chemicals after the body breaks down purines, the substance is found in many foods, including Asparagus, Bacon, Beef, Bluefish, Bouillon, Calf tongue, Carp, Cauliflower, Chicken, Chicken soup, Codfish, Crab, Duck, Goose, etc.

High levels of uric acid in blood serum can be harmful, leading to gout and forming of kidney stones.

Gout mostly effected one joint, is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in the blood, inducing joint inflammation.

According to a cross-sectional survey of a total of 6584 adults (3394 women, 3190 men) conducted by Second Military Medical University, on the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and gout showed that symptoms occurred more frequently in the following sites:
* Knee 7.0%
* Lower back 5.6%(95% CI 5.0-6.2%),
* Shoulder 4.7%
* Neck 2.4%
Women complained of rheumatic symptoms more frequently than men. In fact, symptoms are quite noticeable, you may feel well when you go to bed but wake up during the night with intense pain in one or few joints and sometimes with a fever. The symptoms may go away in a few days but can return from time to time. Chronic gout can cause lumps below the skin around joints.

Kidney stones are composed of mineral salts formed in the kidneys. Men account for 80% of those with kidney stones and are at risk of the formings between 30 and 40 years of age. About 75% of kidney stones are calcium stones.

Uric acid stones occur in 10% of all kidney stones and are the second-most-common cause of urinary stones after calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate calculi.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with uric acid, researchers elucidated the L. trichocarpha ethanolic extract (LTE), ethyl acetate fraction from ethanolic extract (LTA), and isolated compounds urate-lowering activity and liver xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibition on oxonate-induced hyperuricemic mice.

According to the tested differentiation,* Crude ethanolic extract and its ethyl acetate fraction showed significant urate-lowering effects.

* LTE also significantly inhibited liver xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in vivo at the dose of 250mg/kg.

* Luteolin, apigenin, lupeol, lychnopholide, and eremantholide C isolated compounds showed anti-hyperuricemic activities among tested compounds.

* Furthermore, LTE, LTA, lupeol, β-sitosterol, lychnopholide, eremantholide, luteolin, and apigenin were also found to inhibit monosodium urate crystals-induced paw edema in mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ethanolic extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha and some of its bioactive compounds may be promising agents for the treatment of gouty arthritis since they possess both anti-hyperuricemic and anti-inflammatory properties".

Taken together, beta-Sitosterol found abundantly in Ethanolic extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Gamma-Tocopherol-Enriched Tocopherol Mixture (#GammaTmT) Inhibits #LungCancer Cells Growth, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.

In the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistics.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

Researchers do not the exact causes of lung cancer.

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents is a result of an autosomal dominant pattern, which means one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to increase a person's chance of developing lung cancer.

However, not all people who carry mutated lung cancer genes will develop lung cancer.

Cigarette smoking risk of lung cancer, researchers believe cigarettes contain high amounts of cancer-causing substances (carcinogens), when inhaled, the cigarette smoke carried the chemical toxins to the lung cell directly, and prolonged periods exposed to such chemicals can alternate lung cell DNA, leading to the early onset of lung cancer.

Some researchers suggested genetic mutation and long-term cigarette smoking are 2 major risk factors associated with the alternative of lung cell DNA.

Truly, according to the statistic, approximately 8% of lung cancers are inherited or occur as a result of a genetic predisposition.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of lung diseases, researchers examined the growth inhibitory effect of a gamma-tocopherol-enriched tocopherol mixture (gammaTmT) against CL13 murine lung cancer cells grown in culture and as subcutaneous tumors in A/J mice.

According to the analysis,
* GammaTmT had no effect after 2 days and weakly inhibited the growth of CL13 in culture after 5 days (28% growth inhibition at 80 microM).

* Furthermore, dietary treatment at doses of 0.1 and 0.3% gammaTmT for 50 days inhibited the growth of CL13 tumors in A/J mice by 53.9 and 80.5%, respectively.

* According to the histopathological analysis, gammaTmT revealed an increase in tumor necrosis compared to control tumors.

* Moreover, dietary treatment with gammaTmT dose-dependently increased gamma- (10.0-37.6-fold) and delta-tocopherol (8.9-26.7-fold) in the tumors of treated mice compared to controls.

* Additionally, dietary treatment with gammaTmT also increased plasma gamma- (5.4-6.7-fold) and delta-tocopherol (5.5-7-fold). Whereas others have demonstrated the cancer-preventive activity of gammaTmT against mammary and colon cancer, this is the first report of growth-inhibitory activity against lung cancer.

Taken together, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for reducing the risk of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Greentea inhibits the Risk of #Hypertension by Reducing the Levels of Vascular Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Regular drinking of green tea may have a potential effect on maintaining normal blood pressure and reducing the risk of hypertension, a recent study suggested.
Hypertension is abnormally high blood pressure, one of the major risk factors in contributed early onset of cardiovascular disease.

Green tea, considered as a functional food, linking a number of health benefits has been reported by several renowned research and studies. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine ,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding one slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.

Hypertension of male Wistar rats induced by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor [N-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester (L-NAME); 20 mg/kg per day, orally, for 2 weeks], fed with green tea extract exhibited a strong effect in reduced hypertension (119 ± 1 mmHg) and higher renal sympathetic nerve activity (161 ± 12 spikes/s) than the control group (97 ± 2 spikes/s).

Green tea oral administration also showed a significant decrease in hypertensive parameters by amelioration. arterial baroreceptor function and vascular and systemic oxidative stress.

Furthermore, a total of 20 Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats at 13 weeks old with metabolic syndrome were randomized into a saline-treated group (OLETF; n = 10) and a group treated with decaffeinated-GTE (25 mg/kg/day) (GTE-OLETF; n = 10), group fed with decaffeinated-GTE significantly reduced BP (OLETF vs. GTE-OLETF; 130 ± 7 vs. 121 ± 3 mmHg, p = 0.01) in compared control fed with saline.

The study also suggested that fed mice with green tea also showed an anti-hypertensive effect in reduced vascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NADPH in the generation of ROS, as well as improving endothelium (cell lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels)and lymphatic vessels dependent relaxation.

Dr. Ihm SH, the lead author said," (green tea extract) improved endothelial dysfunction and IR, and eventually lowered BP".

Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea processes a significant effect in reduced risk and treatment of hypertension through reduced oxidative stress and improved vascular relaxation as well as decreased metabolic syndrome in exaggerated hypertension.

#TomatoPowder (TP) or Lycopene Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Onset of #Obesity, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a progressive chronic disease, associated with abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body.
People who have a BMI of over 30 are considered to be obese.

According to the statistics provided by Obesity Cabada, the rate of obesity has increased at an alarming rate in Canada over the past few decades.

Approximately over 30% of Canadian adults are considered obese that may require medical support to manage their disease.

Epidemiologically, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, cancer, and other major health problems have been found in most obese patients, causing concern to the scientific community in the health care system.

Furthermore, obesity is associated with increased mortality and a number of complications including diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and cancer.

Believe it or not, obesity has been found to contribute to one in 10 premature deaths among Canadian adults aged 20 to 64. As of today, the healthcare system in Canada has spent between $5 billion and $7 billion for the treatment of obese-related complications.

Conventionally, treatment of obesity is depending on the medical condition, however, the commitment of reduced weight through a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise has been proposed to target the complications.

Dr. Angela Makris, the lead scientist in examining dietary approaches to the treatment of obesity
wrote, "Popular dietary approaches for weight loss have generated widespread interest and considerable debate. While energy balance remains the cornerstone of weight control (i.e., calories still count), new diets and books promising weight loss by limiting certain foods or macronutrients rather than energy are constantly emerging and hitting the bestseller list".

And, "More effective weight loss options are needed to support healthy and sustainable eating behaviors".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention of obesity, researchers examined and compared the effect of lycopene and tomato powder on obesity-associated disorders.

Male C57BL/J6 mice selected for the study were assigned into four groups to receive: a control diet (CD), a high-fat diet (HFD), a high-fat diet supplemented with lycopene, or tomato powder (TP) for 12 weeks.

In male C57BL/J6 mice fed by the HFD, increased adiposity index, organ, and relative organ weights were significantly reduced by lycopene and TP supplementation.

Furthermore, elevated serum triglycerides, free fatty acids, and 8-iso-prostaglandin GF2α associated with lipid peroxidation and glucose homeostasis involved in the secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells were significantly improved by the administration of lycopene and TP supplementation.

Liver tissue's oxidative stress markers induced overexpression of free radicals was reduced by lycopene and TP supplementation through a decrease of inflammatory proteins in adipose tissue.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These results suggest that lycopene or TP supplementation display similar beneficial health effects that could be particularly relevant in the context of nutritional approaches to fight obesity-associated pathologies.".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a functional remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Omega-3 PUFAs Inhibited #ColorectalCancer (CRC) Cells Growth via Regulating DNA Methylation Process, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of organs. The colon-rectum formed as a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and the breaking down of certain materials in the feces into substances some of them be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA, including

*Rectal cancer is the slowest growing cancer. Therefore, most cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed at the advanced stage in the older population.
* Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

Most cases of primary colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.

The common type of colorectal cancer are adenocarcinomas, which originated in epithelium tissues and squamous cells that make up the bowel lining together with the gland cells,

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Colorectal cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, the increase in age, family and personal history, genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of clonic diseases, researchers examined omega-3 PUFAs influences on DNA methylation levels in the colorectal cancer (CRC) rat model.

According to the tested analysis of N-methyl phosphite nitrourea and omega-3, PUFAs fed to the rats during tumor induction, tumor incidence in omega-3 treated rats was much lower than in CRC model rats.
In other words, omega-3 PUFAs process anti colorectal cancer properties.

More precisely, 6 PUFA members categorized to omega-3 and omega-6 families showed similar activity in lowering the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 PUFAs in the omega-3 PUFAs treatment group than in the CRC model group.

Interestingly, the normal cytosine nucleotide DNA (5 mC) content, in omega-3 PUFAs treated rats was higher than in CRC model rats. These results suggested that omega-3 PUFAs promoted 5 mC synthesis.

Where 5mC oxidation reaction is mutated in human tumors.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "omega-3 PUFAs probably inhibited tumor growth via regulating DNA methylation process, which provided a novel anticancer mechanism of omega-3 PUFAs from epigenetic view".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
