Chaste tree berries may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of cancers, some studies proposed.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region,

The queen herb has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an anaphrodisiac herb. It is considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts by taking it for a prolonged period of time.

There was a report that chaste tree berry stems and leaves were used by women as bedding "to cool the heat of lust" during the time of the Thesmophoria.

In the cell cultures, application of different concentrations of Vitex extract after culture for 24 h (logarithmic growth phase) or 72 h (stationary growth phase), exerted a significant cytotoxic activity against all cell lines in logarithmic growth-phase cells, compared to stationary growth-phase cells.

DNA fragmentation, an indication of cancer cells undergoing apoptosis was seen in SKOV-3, KATO-III, COLO 201, and Lu-134-A-H cells.

Furthermore, Vitex extract-treated KATO-III cells also inhibited the expression of heme oxygenase-1 and the active forms of caspases-3, -8, and -9 which play a critical role in the protection of the cancer cell against cytotoxicity.

Dr. Ohyama K, the lead author, said, "(The) cytotoxic activity of Vitex extract may be attributed to the effect on cell growth, that cell death occurs through apoptosis, and that this apoptotic cell death may be attributed to increased intracellular oxidation by Vitex extract treatment".

In a human gastric signet ring carcinoma cell line, KATO-III. further analysis also suggested that the application of ethanol extract of the dried ripe fruit of Vitex agnus-castus (Vitex) decreases the antioxidant enzyme produced by the cancer cells without affecting the levels of the level of GSSG, another indication of oxidative stress increased in the cancer cells.


The result indicated that, Vitex-induced apoptosis through intracellular oxidative stress and mitochondrial membrane damage by decreasing the antioxidant defense of the cancer cell lines.

Taken altogether, Chaste Tree Berries may be considered a functional food and adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of cancers, depending on the result of the large and multi-center studies in human consumption of the herb during the course of diseases.

Herbal Cat'claw may process a potential effect in balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, some scientists suggested.

Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons through chemical bonds with other atoms or molecules during a chemical reaction.

They may have positive, negative, or zero charges. The unpaired electrons cause radicals to be highly chemically reactive in the human body.

The imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants linked to the expression of oxidative stress has been associated with the onset of chronic illness, including atherosclerosis, inflammatory condition, and certain cancers.

In other words, the presence of oxidative stress may be attributed to either the overexpression of free radicals generated by our body by various endogenous systems, exposure to different physiochemical conditions or pathological states, or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in human.

In the concerns of free radicals in the expression of oxidative damage to protein and DNA, lipid peroxidation. oxidative damage to DNA, Dr. V. Lobo, the lead researcher. wrote in the study " Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" "A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function" and " Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

The results clearly indicated, if our body can not produce the levels of antioxidants to counter the overexpression of free radicals reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species, intake of antioxidants from foods, herbs, and synthetic sources may be necessary.

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae.

The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, Harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

In the aim to reaffirm the traditional use of Cat's claw as an anti-inflammatory disorder functional herbal medicine, researchers at the Albany Medical College, conducted an evaluation to examine the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of alkaloids and flavonols isolated from the herb.

In vitro, the application of alkaloids and flavanols isolated from the herb demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity by inhibition of TNF-alpha, the proinflammatory cytokines found in the early phase of infection and nitrite production from RAW 264.7 cells exposed to LPS (50 ng/ml) and in vivo using the indomethacin-induced gastritis model.

The IC50 value for inhibition of TNF-alpha production was significantly (P < 0.01);s higher for Uncaria tomentosa (UT) (14.1 ng/ml) vs Uncaria guianensis (UG).(9.5 ng/ml) compared to alkaloid content of Cat's claw.


Oral pretreatment for 3 d with UT protected against indomethacin-induced gastritis and prevented TNFalpha mRNA expression and apoptosis.

This demonstration reconfirms the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the herbal medicine

Furthermore, in the study to examine the ability of pteropodine to increase the antioxidant activity in mice induced oxidative stress by administered doxorubicin, researchers found that oxidative stress was created by the injection of 10 mg/kg of doxorubicin.was inhibited by pteropodine (100-600 mg/kg).

The bone marrow cytotoxicity induced by doxorubicin was also corrected by the administration of pteropodine.

From an immune and antioxidant perspective, 600 mg/kg of pteropodine increased 25.8% of the production of lymphocytes by over the control value along a 96-hr assay and exhibited a strong capacity to trap the DPPH-free radical (98.26% with 250 microg/ml).

Finally, in the analysis of the antioxidant properties of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the Uncaria tomentosa bark, researchers showed that

Taken together, Cat' claw and its extracts processed a strong antioxidant activity and may be considered a functional food in the prevention of oxidative stress and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of overexpression of oxidative stress-related diseases.

Scientists may have found a whole food that processes a significant effect in stimulating the regeneration of tissue, some studies suggested.

Tissue regeneration is an act of regrowing non-injured tissues from the remaining tissue. Cells in the non-injured tissues are naturally regenerated over time by replaying the cells that have gone through a certain cycle division and die.
One example is the liver grows back to its original size, though not its original shape.

The prepared PU/grapeseed oil and PU/grapeseed oil/honey/propolis scaffold showed enhanced tissue regeneration by maintaining thermal stability and reducing surface roughness compared to the control.

According to the hemolytic assay and cytocompatibility, the electrospun PU/grapeseed oil and PU/grapeseed oil/honey/propolis scaffold promoted tissue regeneration by enhancing the red blood cells (RBC) and human fibroblast cells (HDF).

These result clearly suggested that the newly developed scaffold electrospun might be used as an alternative candidate for bone tissue engineering applications, Dr. Chao CY suggested.


Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional food for speeding up wound healing and tissue regeneration, pending the larger and multicenter human study.

Scientists may have found a natural repellent that protects our skin against insect biting without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

In the rating of products that work best against mosquitoes and ticks, the consumer report found that DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is one of the best to protect us against mosquitoes and ticks, Any products that contain 15 to 30 percent deep can provide long-lasting protection.


However, large oral doses of deep were found to induce symptoms of nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, and seizures. In serious cases, deet can cause cardiotoxicity. Contact exposure to deet also has the potential for dermal effects, leading to numbness and redness of the applied area, according to the study "Neurotoxicity and Mode of Action of N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET)" by Dr. Daniel R. Swale.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The herb has bused used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children's restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds and flu, skin irritations that stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc...

Ingredients
Besides the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, the herb also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.

In the study to evaluate the effects of herbal Catnip as an effective mosquito repellent against several Aedes and Culex species, both topically and spatially, researchers launched a study of the essential oil of the herb in laboratory bioassays.

Catnip essential oil (at a dosage of 20 mg) resulted in average repellency rates of 96% against stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), and 79% against houseflies, Musca domestica (L.), respectively.

Catnip oil used as a potential biting and nuisance insect repellent in urban settings was a moderate irritant with non-irritating to the eye.

Dr. Zhu JJ, at the final report, said, " In comparison with other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved mosquito repellents (DEET, picaridin, and p-menthane-3,8-diol), catnip oil can be considered a relatively safe repellent, which may cause minor skin irritation".

Additionally, in the findings of safer fly control strategies, researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (ARS-USDA) launched an investigation of the effectiveness of catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) oil and its constituent compounds, nepetalactones, as stable fly repellents.

Injection of essential oil of catnip reduced the feeding of stable flies by >96% in an in vitro bioassay system, compared with other sesquiterpene-rich plant oils.

Catnip oil demonstrated strong repellency, compared to other chemicals for repelling biting insects, including isolongifolenone, 2-methylpiperidinyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxamide and (1S,2'S)-2-methylpiperidinyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxamide.


After taking into account co and confounders Dr.Zhu JJ, the lead author said, " In field trials, two formulations of catnip oil provided >95% protection and were effective for up to 6 h when tested on cattle. Catnip oil also acted as a strong oviposition repellent and reduced gravid stable fly oviposition by 98%".

Taken together, there is no doubt that Catnip essential oil can be considered an effective insect-repellent natural remedy.

After examining the two phases of the reported constipation questionnaire and assessing the intestinal transit, straining, stool consistency, and sensation of fecal obstruction or incomplete evacuation in the last 24 hours filled by patients on a daily basis, researchers found that patients received the formula show a statistically significant improvement of bowel function, but the quality of life did not show significant differences among the study periods, according to the WHOQOL-Bref.
