#Curcumin Found in #Turmeric Protects the Lung Cell Integrity Against the Risk of #LungCancer, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung located near the backbone on either side of the heart is a vital organ that inhales oxygen from the air and then transports them to the bloodstream to nourish the body's cell needs and exhales carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
Lung cancer is a chronic condition caused by the alternation of cells' DNA that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the lung tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.

According to the statistics, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. 1 in 16 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime. Every year approximately over 220,000 people in the US are diagnosed with lung cancer this year.

Believe it or not, 60% to 65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.
Depending on the types and aggressiveness of cancer cells originated lung cancer can be classified into
* Non-small cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer that usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably, including
* Squamous-cell carcinoma is often found in an outer area of the lung,

* Large-cell carcinoma is found in the center of the lung by an air tube.

* Adenocarcinoma is found in any part of the lung.

* Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung cancer is a fast-growing type of lung cancer, that spread quickly to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage, including
* Small cell carcinoma in which the cells are small, round, and resemble oats.

* Mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma in which a malignant tumor is found in combining of components of small cell lung carcinoma with large cell lung carcinoma.

* Combined small cell carcinoma, a malignant tumor is found by combining a component of small cell lung carcinoma with components of non-small cell lung carcinoma.

The most common symptoms of lung cancer are shortness of breath, coughing up blood, pain, fluid in the chest, wheezing, and hoarseness accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined curcumin's (diferuloylmethane) anticancer properties.

According to the tested assays,* Curcumin can be an effective adjunct in treating solid organ tumors by activation of tumors' suppressive genes such as p53, a DNA protective gene, and a gene associated with cell growth and apoptosis
* Curcumin protects the lung cell integrity against the pathway associated with the pro0duction of proinflammatory cytokines.

* Curcumin stimulates the transcription factors associated with growth inhibition and apoptosis in tumor cells.

These results strongly suggested that curcumin can be adjunctive chemotherapy to augment currently available treatment protocols, that decreased side effects and toxicity without compromising therapeutic efficacy.

Dr. the lead scientists, after taking into account co and confounder wrote, " Curcumin is one such potential candidate, and this review presents an overview of the current in vitro and in vivo studies of curcumin in lung cancer"

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #BlackBeans Inhibit the Parameters Associated with #HeartDisease, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Black beans may have a significant effect in balancing the ratio of high and low-density lipoprotein, some scientists suggested.
Lipoproteins are a general term for fat, cholesterol, and apolipoproteins, including the 2 most common forms of LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein).

Low-Density Lipoprotein, also known as bad cholesterol in the form of lipoprotein in which cholesterol is transported in the blood. High levels of low-density lipoprotein in the blood are associated with the increased risk of heart disease.

In other words, lowering blood levels of LDL-C reduces the risk of heart disease.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL), is also known as the "good" cholesterol which has been found to remove bad cholesterol from your arteries and recycles LDL cholesterol by transporting it to the liver where it can be reprocessed (endothelium) of blood vessels.

Some researchers suggested that HDL prevents the risk of atherosclerosis, by removing the plaques accumulated in the inner wall of arteries.

Lipoprotein ratio is the calculation of total/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratios which are considered indicators with greater predictive value than isolated parameters used independently in the prediction of the risk of heart disease.

According to Mayo Clinic, Higher numbers of lipoprotein ratio is associated with a higher risk of heart disease. The preferred ratio is less than 4 of total cholesterol to 1 of HDL. If your total cholesterol is 200 mg/dL (5.2 mmol/L) and your HDL is 50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L), to calculate your cholesterol ratio, divide your total cholesterol number by your HDL cholesterol number. your lipoprotein ratio, in this case, is 4-to-1.

Total cholesterol is the total amount of cholesterol in your blood. including low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”)

Black beans, small roughly ovoid legumes with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belonging to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms.

It is believed that black bean was the first domesticated growth in South America.

Chemicals constituents
The major chemical compounds of black bean include anthocyanin, (-)-epicatechin, delphinidin, petunidin, flavonols, and malvidin.

In the study to assess the antioxidant activity in the family legumes, researchers at the North Dakota State Univ. launched an investigation to examine whether the hydrophilic extracts from 9 selected legumes have potency against copper-induced human LDL oxidation model in vitro.

After assessing the antioxidant activity on the early and later stage markers of LDL oxidation using the formation of conjugated dienes (lag time of oxidation) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), researchers found that
* There is no significant lag-time lengthening all legume extracts. On the other hand,

* Black beans exhibited higher antioxidant capacities (Trolox equivalents) in both LDL-conjugated dienes assay and LDL-TBARS assay.

* The antioxidant activities of these legumes against LDL-lipid peroxidation are correlated very significantly with their phenolic substances, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity).
These results suggested that consuming black beans may have the potential in preventing the development of atherosclerosis from the perspective of inhibiting LDL oxidation, the major source of plaque accumulation.

Furthermore, in the study to reaffirm that the inhibitory effect of black soybeans on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, researchers conducted an experiment to compare the efficacy of black and yellow soybean extracts in reducing the risk of low-density lipoprotein.

At the final report of the study, researchers indicated that although the lacked time of LDL oxidation is found in both beans, the antioxidant effects of the extract are similar in both soybeans.

Additionally, the mixture of the germ and cotyledon hydrolyzed by beta-glucosidase in both beans showed a stronger inhibitory effect on LDL oxidation than that before being hydrolyzed by beta-glucosidase.

Moreover, black soybeans are found more effective in inhibiting LDL oxidation than yellow soybeans because of the total polyphenols contents in their seed coat.

Dr. Takahashi R, the lead author after taking into account co and confounders said, "aglycones, which are rich in soybeans fermented or hydrolyzed by beta-glucosidase, may play a crucial role in the prevention of oxidation-related diseases".

Taken altogether, black beans with abundant phytochemicals may be considered a functional food in inhibiting the level of low-density lipoprotein, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

#Phytochemical #Betacyanins Exert a Significant #Cytotoxic Effect on #Cancers, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

The cytotoxic effect is the process to kill cells through toxic substances, particularly in cancer cells.
Chemotherapy is a treatment that uses drugs to treat any disease, including cancer.

Chemo drugs also have been used to shrink the tumor before surgery or combined radiotherapy to remove, kill, or damage cancer cells in a certain area,

Chemo travel along the bloodstream to kill cancer cells throughout the whole body.

There are over 100 different types of chemo drugs, including
* Docetaxel (Taxotere), is a type of chemo drug used for the treatment of a chemotherapy drug. It is used to treat many types of cancer including breast, prostate, stomach, head and neck, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

* Eribulin (Halaven) is used mostly for the treatment of breast cancer by interfering with cancer cell division and growth.

* Ixabepilone (Ixempra) is used in patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

* Paclitaxel (Taxol) has been used for the treatment of used to treat a number of types of cancers, including ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, Kaposi sarcoma, cervical cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

* Vinblastine is most commonly used for the treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, brain cancer, melanoma, and testicular cancer.

Conventionally, chemo drugs have been found to induce serious side effects, including fatigue due to the loss of healthy cells, hair loss associated with the damage of hair follicles, easy bruising, and bleeding, infection due to the weakened immune system, anemia caused by the loss of red blood cells, digestive symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, appetite changes, and constipation.

Some of the symptoms may be going away as soon as the treatment stops. However, some symptoms may take months or years after the treatment stops before disappearing

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA-approved red food color E162, cytotoxic effect.

Compared to the chemo drug doxorubicin (adriamycin), betanin, the major betacyanin constituent showed to exhibit a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and in the well-established estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), comparable to those of doxorubicin.

In time analysis, although the cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin which completely inhibits the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days, the extract continued to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) at the concentration of 29 µg/ml.

Furthermore, in the normal human skin FC and liver HC cell lines, the extract showed a significantly lower cytotoxic effect compared to doxorubicin (8.6% vs. 100%, respectively, at 29 µg/ml concentration of each, three-day test period).

In chemical differentiation, the efficacy of beetroot extract was attributed to the chemical compound betanin, the major betacyanin constituent in exerting cytotoxicity.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Further studies are needed to evaluate the chemopreventive potentials of the beetroot extract when used alone or in combination with doxorubicin to mitigate the toxic side effects of the latter".

Taken altogether, betacyanins processed as the major bioactive ingredient betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Betacyanins Process Anti Cancer Activities by Inhibiting Enzyme COX-2 Associated with Tumour Growth

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases caused by cell growth and multiplies disorderedly and uncontrollably in the body.
Depending on the type and grade of cancer, some cancers can be progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancers can spread to other tissues and organs in the body via lymph or blood.

Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process. Every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.

Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cuts, injuries, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again.

In other words, cell growth or cell division is limited to a number of cycles due to our body's growth inhibitors, before replacing by new cells.

In cancer cells, the cycle of cell growth can be indefinite.

Depending on the type of cells that initiates cancer, cancers can be classified into

* Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of the epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures, and glands. Although the formation of the malignant tumor in the epithelium is still unknown, it possesses and associates the characteristics of epithelial cells, including those of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.

* Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from malignantly connective tissue cells originating from embryonic germ cells or bone, cartilage, and fat tissues and cells.

* Lymphoma and leukemia:
Hematopoietic cells are multipotent stem cells that give rise to all types of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets that become cancerous.

* Germ cell tumor
Cancer is derived from pluripotent cells. In adults, these are most often found in the testicle and ovary but are more common in babies and young children.

* Blastoma
Cancer is derived from immature "precursor" or embryonic tissue. These are also commonest in children.

According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes. In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer, and 1,790 died of the disease.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, researchers examined the soluble natural food colors betacyanins and anthocyanins isolated from Beta vulgaris.

Based on the results of these natural pigments, alone and in combination, evaluated for their relative potencies using MCF-7 (breast), HCT-116 (colon), AGS (stomach), CNS (central nervous system), and NCI-H460 (lung) tumor cell lines, betacyanins, and anthocyanins showed a significant effect in the inhibition of enzyme COX-2 associated with the promotion of tumor growth and suppression of tumor apoptosis.

Furthermore, the COX-1 associated with the promotion of overexpression of the enzyme in prostaglandin biosynthesis in tumor onset and progression is also inhibited by the administration of betacyanins and anthocyanins.

Moreover, betacyanins showed a dose-dependent growth inhibition against breast, colon, stomach, central nervous system, and lung tumor cells.

Interestingly, in the chemical analysis, researchers found that the combination exerted synergistic effects, and chemical interactions at various concentrations against tested cancer cell lines.
Finally, Only the mixture of anthocyanin and betanin negated their efficacy in the cell growth inhibitory assay and did not enhance the COX enzyme inhibitory activity.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This is the first report of a comparative evaluation and the impact on biological activities of these pigments alone and in combination".

Taken altogether, betacyanins used alone or combined with other herbal remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Tomato Modulates Immune Function Against the Risk of Diseases Associated with Low-Grade-Inflammation

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system plays a critical role in the body's defense against infectious organisms and other pathogens.
The immune function can be classified into subsystems, including the innate and adaptive responses.
* The innate responses are the general response of the immune system that can act quickly to destroy invaders, regardless of the type of organism.

* The adaptive responses develop slowly on first exposure to a new pathogen slowly. In some cases, it may take a week or so before the responses are effective.

However, due to the quick division of bacteria, (a single bacterium with a doubling time of one hour can produce almost 20 million progeny), therefore, our body is totally dependent on the innate immune system to destroy the invader in the first critical hours and days of exposure.

Believe it or not, if the innate immune subsystem cannot destroy the foreign invader in a set period of time from 3 -8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade inflammation in facilitating the onset of various diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and arthritis.

Immune modulation is the process to increase and decrease immune functioning depending on the needs of the body. In people with a weakened immune system, modulation of the immune system is found to enhance immune functioning against infectious agents.

However, in people with overactive immunity, modulation of the immune function will reduce the risk of the immune system attacking the body tissues.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a potential compound with immune-modulatory activity, researchers examined the influence of tomato aqueous extract (TAE) on the in vitro inflammatory response.

According to the results observed by the Murine macrophages (RAW264.7 cells), PBLs, and HUVECs incubated with TAE, TAE exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as L-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12 and chemokines such as CCL2/MCP-1, CCL3/MIP-1α.

In the endothelial cell, TAE reduced ED-associated expression of adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1) associated with the production of inflammation.

In macrophages, the production of pro-inflammatory proteins associated with low-grade inflammation also inhibited the injection of TAE.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "During acute inflammation, TAE enhances cellular alertness and therefore the sensing of disturbed immune homeostasis in the vascular-endothelial compartment. Conversely, it blunts inflammatory mediators in macrophages during chronic inflammation".

In other words, TAE protects the integrity and viability of immune cells by modulating the immune activity depending on the needs of the body.

Furthermore, in a blinded, randomized, cross-over study, male subjects on a low-carotenoid diet consumed 330 ml/day of either tomato juice (37.0 mg/day lycopene) or carrot juice (27.1 mg/day beta-carotene and 13.1 mg/day alpha-carotene) for 2 weeks with a 2-week depletion period after juice intervention, researchers compared the effects of a low-carotenoid diet supplemented with either tomato (providing high amounts of lycopene) or carrot juice (providing high amounts of alpha- and beta-carotene) on immune functions in healthy man.

According to the results from the tested assays, juice consumption showed relatively fast responses in plasma carotenoid concentrations (p < 0.0002) without being accompanied by concomitant changes in immune functions.

However, increased plasma carotenoid concentrations after vegetable juice consumption were accompanied by a time-delayed modulation of immune functions in healthy men consuming a low-carotenoid diet.

Precisely, tomato juice modulated the immune function in a delay and concentration-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the modulation of immune function based on the body's needs, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Tea and Coffee #Caffeine May Be Associated with DNA Change and Medicine Interaction in PD, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stages of the treatment which directly address the cause of the disease.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Intake of coffee may have a profound effect on the risk of certain diseases induced by DNA methylation, a renowned study suggested.

In a study to differentiate genome-wide DNA methylation for coffee and tea consumption in four European cohorts (N = 3,096) with DNA methylation measured from whole blood at 421,695 CpG sites distributed throughout the genome and analyzed in men and women both separately and together in each cohort, researchers at the joint study lead by the Science for Life Laboratory, found that No individual sites were found to associate with men or with the sex-combined analysis for coffee.

Contrastively, in the re-examine of two placebo-controlled studies, among subjects taking creatine, for whom higher caffeine intake was associated with more rapid progression of PD, according to the DNA samples and caffeine intake data.

Although GRIN2A genotype was not associated with the rate of clinical progression of PD in the placebo group, intake of coffee may have interacted with creatine in many different ways in these groups of patients, particularly in the creatine group with high levels of caffeine intake,

These results indicated important results
1. Coffee and caffeine intake do not exert a change of DNA in healthy individuals.
2. Caffeine exposed a strong interaction with some medications, such as creatine to induce DNA change
3. These inactions increased the severity of the disease expression and progression

Dr. Simon DK, the lead author said, "(the study demonstrated an example of a genetic factor interacting with environmental factors illustrates the complexity of gene-environment interactions in the progression of PD.

In support of the above analysis, Dr. Yamada-Fowler N, the lead researcher of another joint study led by Linköping University, insisted that caffeine expresses a strong effect in increased risk PD progression by interaction with gene GRIN2A, instead of the group with the intake of creatine

The findings suggested that caffeine may have a profound effect in interaction with some medication in inducing some genes change or inducing DNA change without the presence of medicine intake in some diseases.

#Healthyfood #Onions In the Inhibition of the Risk of #EndometrialCancer, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

The endometrium is the inner lining of the mammalian uterus that is very susceptible to hormone change, particularly in the menstrual cycle.
The endometrium is also a reproductive organ where implantation takes place. In the absence of periodic hormonal influence, before puberty or following menopause, this tissue has a constant morphology and thickness.

Endometrial cancer, a late adulthood cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth that starts in the cell on the surface of the inner endometrial lining of the uterus due to the alternation of cells DNA.

Endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, after breast, lung, and bowel cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, cancer of the endometrium is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs. In 2019, approximately 61,000 cases of endometrial cancer will be diagnosed.

The most common types of endometrial cancer are
* Adenocarcinomas
Adenocarcinomas accounted for account for over 80% of cases of endometrial cancer that begins with irregular cells growth in the surface cells of the inner lining of the endometrium

Women who have an early onset of symptoms of peri-menopause are at a higher risk of adenocarcinomas.

* Uterine sarcoma
Uterine sarcoma, a rare uterine cancer containing malignant cells of the muscle and connective tissue of the uterus, is accounted for only 2 percent of all uterine cancer, including
** Endometrial stromal sarcomas
Endometrial stromal sarcomas are also endometrial cancers that originated in the non-glandular connective tissue of the endometrium, with unknown origin.

* Leiomyosarcomas
Leiomyosarcomas is a form of endometrial cancer that originated from the smooth muscles of the uterus. Endometrial cancer has a resistant tendency and is not very responsive to chemotherapy or radiation.

* Carcinosarcoma
Carcinosarcoma is a type of cancer caused by both the epithelial and connective tissues of the uterus.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined the relationship between onion and garlic intake on endometrial cancer, using data from an Italian case-control study.

According to the data of a multicentre case-control study of 454 endometrial cancer cases and 908 controls, admitted to the same hospitals for a wide spectrum of acute, non-neoplastic conditions, the OR of endometrial cancer for successive categories of onion intake was 0.94 for <2 portions/week compared to garlic of 0.89.

The OR of onion intake was decreased to 0.40 (95% CI 0.22, 0.72) for > or =2 portions/week, compared to garlic of 0.62.

In other words, onion showed a significant inverse trend for the risk of endometrial cancer depending on the quality intake per week.

Furthermore, The OR for an increment of one portion (i.e. 80 g) of onions in the risk of endometrial cancer per week was 0.81.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Our study found a moderate protective role of allium vegetables on the risk of endometrial cancer".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
