#Herbal #Coltsfoot Inhibits the #OxidativeStress That Promotes #NeurologicalDisease, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including using medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons mainly occurring in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into an advanced stage.

According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing to improve dementia symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the neuroprotective effect of Tussilagone (TSL) on LPS-induced neuronal cell death.

According to the tested assays, 4 sesquiterpenoids isolated from the TSL showed a significant effect against the production of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, and tumor necrosis factor-α in LPS-treated BV-2 cells.

In other words, the sesquiterpenoids inhibited the production of free radicals and proinflammatory expression associated with the BV-2 cells' oxidative stress induced by LPS.

More precisely, the inhibition against the initiation of oxidative stress was attributed to the sesquiterpenoid's activity in blocking the activation of the proinflammatory (NF-κB) pathway

Furthermore, the sesquiterpenoids also inhibited LPS-induced neuronal cell death in the co-culture system by inhibiting the expression of NF-κB pathway and scavenging of ROS.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "sesquiterpenoids from Tussilago farfara may have beneficial therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases through inhibition of microglial activation".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for treating neurological disease, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Onion Inhibits the Onset of High Blood Pressure, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

High blood pressure, a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes is a medical condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the arteries.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

More precisely in high blood pressure patients, the heart has to work harder to circulate blood to the body's needs. Long-term elevated blood pressure raises the pressure of the heart and has been found to damage to the heart tissue, leading to the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 54% of adults in the US are living with high blood pressure and half of them have an uncontrol condition.

In the US, high blood pressure is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and a leading cause of death.

Most patients with high blood pressure are asymptomatic. However, over time, elevated high blood pressure can induce symptoms of severe headache, fatigue or confusion, and vision problems. chest pain difficulty breathing accompanied by symptoms of the abnormal heartbeat

The most prevalent factors associated with high blood pressure found in patients are tobacco or excessive alcohol drinking, chronic medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea.

Some researchers in the investigation of the correlation of diet in the risk hypertension in pregnancy wrote, " a diet rich in vegetables and fish decreased the odds of developing gestational hypertension by 14% (5491/39,362 women developed hypertension) and pre-eclampsia by 21% (1168/54,778 women developed pre-eclampsia) ".

And, "Meanwhile, a Western diet increased the odds of developing gestational hypertension by 18% (5491/39,362 women developed hypertension) and pre-eclampsia by 40% (1168/54,778 women developed pre-eclampsia)".
In other words, by following a healthy diet and moderate exercise, high blood pressure is preventable.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

With an aim to find a potent ingredient for the prevention of heart disease, researchers examined the effects of quercetin, a bioactive compound found in onion supplementation in reducing blood pressure in hypertensive rodents.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study included men and women diagnosed with prehypertension (n = 19) and stage 1 hypertension (n = 22) who received either 730 mg quercetin/d for 28 days or placebo.

Based on the tested differentiation,
* Both quercetin and placebo did not alter the blood pressure in prehypertensive patients.

* Quercetin exerted a strong effect on the reductions of systolic (-7 +/- 2 mm Hg), diastolic (-5 +/- 2 mm Hg), and mean arterial pressures (-5 +/- 2 mm Hg) in stage 1 hypertensive patient compared to placebo.

* However, quercetin showed no effect on oxidative stress, according to the measurement of the plasma and urine.

The results strongly suggested that quercetin supplementation lowers blood pressure, depending on the reading of the blood pressure, without alternating the oxidative stress in the arteries.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "These data are the first to our knowledge to show that quercetin supplementation reduces blood pressure in hypertensive subjects. Contrary to animal-based studies, there was no quercetin-evoked reduction in systemic markers of oxidative stress".

Taken altogether, onion processed a higher amount of quercetin may be considered a remedy for the treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bilberry, the Herbal Medicines in the Inhibition of #Alzheimer's Disease, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.
The disease is most prevalent in the elderly and causes over 60% of all cases of dementia.

According to the statistics, approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's. 15.9 million family caregivers provided an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.

Epidemiological studies suggest that Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the brain's neurons over time.

Although, less than 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic preposition. Patients with such a mutated gene are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.

More precisely, any one of a number of different single-gene mutations on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1 was found to induce the onset of AD.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) investigated the effects of anthocyanoside extracts (Vaccinium myrtillus anthocyanoside (VMA)) obtained from bilberry on the in vitro progression of Aβ fibril formation and in vivo effects of this compound on AD pathogenesis.

In Neuro2a cells, injection of VMA inhibited the in vitro formation of Aβ peptide fibrils in the induction of neuron toxicity.

Furthermore, A diet containing 1% VMA prevented the cognitive degeneration found in the tested AD mice.

Interestingly, this diet in the retention of cognitive ability was not accompanied by a reduction in the aggregate deposition in brains but rather, an increase in insoluble deposits, compared to control mice.
The results suggested that VMA shows a strong effect on Alzheimer's disease by altering the Aβ aggregation to a non-toxic form.

In order to reveal more information about bilberry anti-AD activity, researchers elucidated the effects of different polyphenols on neuroprotection and APP processing under different in vitro stress conditions.
Injection of myricetin, quercetin, or anthocyanin-rich extracts in a dose-dependent manner significantly inhibited the overexpression of free radicals caused by the application of Menadione.

APdE9 mice fed with anthocyanin-rich bilberry or blackcurrant extracts showed decreased APP C-terminal fragment levels, the amyloid precursor protein in the cerebral cortex, compared to APdE9 mice on the control diet.

Levels of soluble Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels were found to significantly decrease in bilberry-fed mice, compared to blackcurrant-fed mice.

Additionally, the bilberry diet also improved the spatial working memory of aged APdE9 mice, compared to mice on the control diet.

Based on the findings, Dr. Vepsäläinen S, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "These data suggest that anthocyanin-rich bilberry and blackcurrant diets favorably modulate APP processing and alleviate behavioral abnormalities in a mouse model of AD".

Taken altogether, bilberry rich in anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Enhances the Kidney Functions Against the Onset of #Nephrotoxicity, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organ in the human body only filter out blood but also balances body fluids by eliminating them and removing them through urinary secretion.
Renal protection is a strategy that protects the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Kidney disease is a medical condition that causes the reduced function of the kidney due to damage.

In other words, the progression of kidney damage may affect the function of the kidney to filter blood
against toxins.

Most patients with chronic kidney disease are also found to have conditions of diabetes or high blood pressure.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.

The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins to accumulate in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.

Kidney damage can be classified into 4 different stages
* Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min). In this stage of kidney patients are asymptomatic.

* Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min), Patients in this stage also experience no symptoms.

*Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min) and 3B moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min.
Most patients are asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of mild swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal.

* Stage 4 CKD (GFR = 15-30 mL/min). Most patients in this stage experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problems associated with weakened kidney function

* Stage 5 EndStage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min). Patients at this advanced stage are very close to renal failure or renal failure. Symptoms are getting worse.

Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of kidney disease, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera on rats-induced nephrotoxicity.

The study included selected rats orally administrated by The root extract of three different doses of W. somnifera (viz., 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg) for 14 days before GEN treatment and thereafter concurrently with GEN (100 mg/kg) for 8 days.

Based on the tested differentiation, the GEN treatment group showed significant nephrotoxicity associated with kidney injury by an increase in kidney weight, urea, creatinine, urinary protein, and glucose, and a significant reduction in body weights and potassium by enhancing the overexpression of free radicals.

Compared to somnifera doses of W. somnifera at 250 and 750 mg/kg, the administration of 500 mg/kg showed the strongest effect in reversing the aforementioned changes observed by the microscopically antioxidant evidence.

In other words, W. somnifera protected the kidney against acute toxicity in a dose-dependent manner.

However, there were no significant changes in the levels of sodium in the experimental animals compared to the control.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "nephroprotective effect of Withania somnifera, which could be by enhancing antioxidant activity with natural antioxidants and scavenging the free radicals".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of periodontitis, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Healthyfood #CruciferousVegetables Reduces Risk of #DiabeticVascularComplications, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic vascular complications are caused by a diverse group of highly oxidant compounds(advanced glycation end(AGEs) produced by a modern heat-processed diet, inducing pathogenic significance in diabetes and several other chronic diseases.

Diabetes is a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose. It is either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
Its complications may include renal failure and cardiovascular events.

Intake of Cruciferous Vegetables regularly may be beneficial in reducing the risk of diabetic vascular complications.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.

Dr, Yamagishi S, the lead author said, " the Inhibition of AGE formation, blockade of the AGE-RAGE interaction, and suppression of RAGE expression or its downstream pathways may be novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of vascular complications in diabetes"

Some researchers insisted that diabetic vascular complications may be blocked if food-advanced glycation end-products aggravate diabetic vascular complications via modulating the RAGE receptors in the removal of AGE.

According to the Kurume University School of Medicine, sulforaphane, a phytochemical compound found in cruciferous vegetables showed a potential effect against diabetic vascular complications, through its interference with pro-inflammatory reactions, and reduction of oxidate stress.

In cultured cells and experimental animals, sulforaphane suppressed inflammatory activation of vascular cells, and induced potential beneficial effects to prevent vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis complication of diabetics.

Therefore, intake of Cruciferous Vegetables may reduce the risk of diabetic vascular complications as sulforaphane, a phytochemical compound in cruciferous vegetables not only inhibited the levels of advanced glycation end but also enhanced the production of Nrf2 in controlling over 500 genes expression of cellular defense mechanisms.

The Effects of #Herbal #Turmeric on #Psoriasis According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is a common skin condition caused by speeding up the life cycle of skin cells, leading to death skin built-up on the surface of the affected area.

The most common symptoms of psoriasis are the formation of scales and red patches inducing pain and itchiness.

In severe cases, the disease can also cause symptoms of dry, cracked skin, thickened, pitted or ridged nails and swollen and stiff joints, depending on the speed of the skin cell life cycle.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have psoriasis, please check with your doctor.

The most common risk factors associated with psoriasis are family history, long-term stress, skin injury, medication, bacterial and viral infection, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.

Dr. F Prignano, the lead scientist in the evaluated the itch in psoriasis: epidemiology, clinical aspects, and treatment options wrote, "Almost 85% of psoriatic patients suffered from itching; the frequency of pruritus was daily and mean intensity by VAS scale was moderate. The presence and intensity of pruritus and body mass index (BMI) were correlated. 40% of patients with pruritus were overweight (BMI > 25 < 30) and 10% obese (BMI > 30)".

And, "Emollients, topical steroids, and calcipotriol cream could relieve pruritus but their effect was temporary. Among the antipsoriatic therapies, phototherapy with narrowband ultraviolet B (nb-UVB) was the most effective treatment in reducing pruritus. Biological therapies, mainly etanercept and efalizumab, proved useful in its control".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk of psoriasis increase substantially compared to those who are not.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of psoriasis, researchers evaluated the effect of turmeric used as immune modulation and anti-inflammatory therapy on scalp psoriasis.

The study included 40 patients with mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into two groups with the case group received turmeric tonic twice a day compared to placebo applied in the same manner.for 9 weeks.

According to the evaluation at the baseline, weeks 3, 6, and 9, compared to the placebo, turmeric tonic significantly reduced the erythema, scaling, and induration of lesions (PASI score), and also improved the patients' quality of life.

In other words, turmeric inhibited the symptoms and the progression of psoriasis without inducing any side effects in participants.

Most patients at the end of the experiment expressed satisfaction of the clinical effects of turmeric tonic on scalp psoriasis.

Based on the findings, Dr. Bahraini P, the lead scientist wrote, "This formulation could be considered as a treatment for scalp psoriasis".

Furthermore, the Islamic Azad University, in the evaluation of Curcuma longa effect against several inflammatory enzymes mainly involved in the inflammatory process of psoriasis, conducted a randomized, prospective intra-individual, right-left comparative, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial in 34 patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis found that turmeric showed an improvement of the clinical and quality of life parameters in treated patients compared to untreated control.

Researchers, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Based on our findings, the proposed microemulgel may well be considered as an alternative in some patients and most likely as an add-on therapeutic option for many patients suffering from plaque psoriasis".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of psoriasis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Tomato Improves #SleepQuality in Obese #Postmenopausalwomen, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind and body in humans, In sleep, most functions of the brain are reduced including sensory activity, and voluntary muscles are inhibited.
In other words, sleep is the state in which humans reduced interactions with the outside world.

The human sleep recurrently to reenergize their body so that when awake they can carry out a daily activity without feeling tired or weak.

In the brain, sleep helps to maintain the pathways associated with the brain function such as learning and studying. A recent study suggested sleep helps to remove toxins in the brain that was built up when awake.

Believe it or not, we spend about one-third of our life sleeping.
Sleep disorders are syndromes associated negatively with the changes in the sleep pattern, including insomnia, one of the most common causes of disease disorders in the US, found in 30% of adults, including 10% of chronic insomnia is a condition of difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night.

According to the statistics, 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder including 37.9% reported unintentionally falling asleep during the day.

Sleep disorders have been found to have a strong implication on economic cost. Dr. Hillman DR, the lead scientist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital wrote, "The overall cost of sleep disorders in Australia in 2004 (population: 20.1 million) was dollar 7494 million".

And, "The direct and indirect costs of sleep disorders are high. The total financial costs (independent of the cost of suffering) of dollar 4524 million represent 0.8% of the Australian gross domestic product. The cost of the suffering of dollar 2970 million is 1.4% of the total burden of disease in Australia".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a natural and potential compound for the improvement of sleep quality, researchers investigated the effect of tomato intake before bed on obese postmenopausal women's urinary 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) level, a reliable surrogate biomarker reflecting the blood melatonin concentration and sleep quality.

The study is an 8-week open-label, randomized controlled dietary intervention trial that included 36 subjects who completed the entire trial.

In the tomato group, participants ate 250 g of beefsteak tomatoes for 2 h before sleeping for 8 weeks.

After 8 weeks, by comparing the blood and urine samples collected at the baseline and in the 8th week, researchers found 8 weeks of the beefsteak intervention, improved all components of all components of the PSQI compared to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before treatment.

Furthermore, tomatoes and beefsteak intervention also improved the levels of aMT6s level by 10-fold compared to that of the control group.

In other words, tomato combined with beefsteak improved the sleep quality of the participants.

These results strongly suggested that tomatoes enhanced the levels of melatonin in the beef substantially in the improvement of sleep quality.

Dr. Yang TH, the lead scientist at the Taipei Medical University wrote in the final report, "Supplementation with beefsteak tomato before sleep can increase circulating melatonin and improve sleep quality in obese postmenopausal women".

Taken altogether, tomatoes combined with beefsteak may be considered treatment to improve sleep quality, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
