#Tomatoes Inhibit the Onset of #GastricCancer in Human Studies, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastric or stomach cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the stomach caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cell on the surface of the stomach inner lining before penetrating into the deeper layers.

At the early stage, patients with gastric cancer are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, gastric cancer can induce symptoms of indigestion or heartburn, stomach pain, discomfort in the abdomen particularly vomiting up solid food shortly after eating, change of bowel movement accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019 approximately 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Believe it or not, most cases of gastric cancer in the US are found in older adults. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68.

In other words, 6 of every 10 people diagnosed with stomach cancer each year are 65 or older.

Although there are many risk factors associated with gastric cancer including aging gender, ethnicity, medical condition such as lymphoma, and smoking,... some researchers suggested that certain diet that has large amounts of smoked foods, salted fish and meat, and pickled vegetables may have a strong effect in gastric cancer developing.

Dr. L T Ngoan, the lead scientist said, "During 139 390 person-year of follow-up of over 13 000 subjects, 116 died from stomach cancer. Using a Cox proportional hazards–regression analysis of relative risk (RR, 95% CI) controlling for age, sex, smoking, and other dietary factors, a significant decline was found with high consumption of green and yellow vegetables (RR=0.4, 95% CI=0.2–0.9)"

And, "The risk was significantly increased by the high consumption of processed meat (RR=2.7, 95% CI=1.0-7.4) and by the frequent use of cooking oil (RR=4.0, 95% CI=1.3-11.8). The high consumption of pickled food and traditional soups also increased risk, but not significantly. The findings suggest that a diet high in salt and low in vitamins may be associated with an increase in stomach cancer"

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers examined the possible association between tomato product consumption and gastric cancer.

The review of MEDLINE and EMBASE and contacted authors to identify potential studies published from January 1966 to June 2012 was conducted by the Shanghai Tenth Peoples' Hospital, Tongji University included a total of 21 eligible studies satisfied the guideline and criteria.

According to the results, the consumption of large amounts of tomato products compared to the highest and lowest consumption groups showed a significantly reduced the risk for gastric cancer.

The OR ratio of lycopene consumption and serum lycopene was 0.88 and 0.79, respectively.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Consumption of large amounts of tomato products is associated with a reduced risk of gastric cancer".

Furthermore, by examining the anticancer effect of Pectic-Oligosaccharide isolated from Sour Raw Tomato (SrTPOwith its bioavailability and structure elucidated from purified fraction (SrTPO1), scientists at the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute showed that administration of SrTPO1 inhibited galectin-3 activity with MIC of 0.25 ug/mL (100 fold better than standard galactose), inhibited the growth of AGS cells (IC50 3.4μg/mL) and induced apoptosis (70% inhibition at 30μg/mL concentration) without affecting the normal cells.

Where galectin-3 expression is associated with the promotion of tumor progression and metastasis.

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene and Pectic-Oligosaccharide may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Artichoke Exhibits #Antioxidant Activity Against Oxidative Stress, Researchers Reveal

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy that processed significant antioxidant activity against the onset and progression of oxidative stress-related diseases, according to studies.
Oxidative stress-related conditions are the diseases associated with cellular damage, including the alternation of cell DNA, and damage of lipids and proteins.

The list of chronic diseases caused by cell oxidation is very long, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.

The most common causes of oxidative stress are overexpression of free radicals in the induction of a chain reaction.

Due to the unstable nature of free radicals with unpaired electrons in the outer ring, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept the electrons from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until the outring electron are either paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

In contrast to the general belief, the damage caused by free radicals is overly exaggerated, under normal conditions, free radicals produced by internal or external sources are needed by our body for cellular responses and immune function.

However, overexpression of free radicals also known as oxidative stress can be a danger to our health.

Oxidative stress can be acute or chronic. Acute oxidative stress caused by a sudden burst of free radicals due to stress or external sources, in most cases can be inhibited by increasing antioxidant enzymes in the lung.

Chronic oxidative stress is caused by the unbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by our bodies. The condition is either caused by over expression of free radicals, depletion of antioxidant enzymes, or both.

There are many risk factors that cause oxidative stress. However, in the concerns of the prevalence of chronic diseases associated with the Western diet, some researchers suggested that the link of oxidative diseases in the Western world may result from the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Ildiko Erdelyi, the lead scientist said, "A Western-style diet (WD), defined by high-fat, low-calcium, and vitamin D content, is associated with increased risk of human colorectal cancer. Understanding molecular mechanisms altered by the WD is crucial to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies".

And, "consumption of a WD interferes with networks of related biological response pathways involving colonic lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and the immune response".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases examined the antioxidant activity of artichokes in the rat model.

Artichoke extracts showed good efficiency in the inhibition in vitro of LDL oxidation. Injection of artichoke extracts also increased the levels of antioxidant glutathione peroxidase against oxidative damage in the tested subjects compared to the control group.

Injection of artichoke extracts also inhibited the expression of a protein oxidation biomarker (2-Aminoadipic semialdehyde) compared to the control group.

In order to reveal more information about artichoke antioxidant activity, researchers examined the phenolic compound content and composition and the antioxidant activity of leaf parts [blades (SLB), petioles, and midribs (SPM)] from various Greek artichoke genotypes.

The leaf blades of most of the genotypes have a high content of flavonoids (mainly luteolin glycoside derivatives), which ranged between 49 and 78% of total phenolic compounds (TPC).

Petioles and midribs phenolic acids (mainly hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives) were the main phenolic compounds, ranging between 64 and 76% of TPC,

The antioxidant activity of blades was significantly higher than that of petiole and midribs for all the genotypes according to the tested assays.

The results of antioxidant differentiation suggested that artichoke leaves (blades, petioles, and midribs) show different bioactive compound profiles in stimulating the different levels of antioxidant properties.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases through its antioxidant activity, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Broccoli Gobbles Up #UrologicCancer Cells, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Urologic cancers are a class of medical conditions including prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth with the possibility of spreading to the distant parts of the body.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

* Kidney cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the kidneys.

At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance way to infect other organs' tissues.
For example, if kidney cancer spreads to the lung is called kidney cancer with lung metastases.

* Bladder cancer
The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.

Bladder cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects men twice as frequently as it affects women.

* Cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter is a cancer of the renal pelvis on the top part of the ureter and the ureter which is a long tube that connects the kidney to the bladder

* Testicle cancer
Testicular Cancer is cancer that arises in the testicles (testes), located inside the scrotum. testicles form part of the male reproductive system, responding to the production and reproduction of male sex hormones and sperm.

* Cancer of the penis
Penis cancer is a type of irregular cell growth formed in the tissues of the penis.

* Urethra cancer
Urethral cancer is a type of medical condition caused by the growth of malignant cells in tissues of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body.

The most common symptoms of urologic cancers are difficulty starting to urinate or difficulty holding urine back, weak urine stream or interruption of stream, painful urination, pelvic discomfort, bone pain, erectile dysfunction (ED), painful ejaculation, blood in the urine and blood in the semen.

The joint study led by the National Cancer Center, Goyang, Korea, wrote, "During 1999-2012 (In Korean), urological cancer occurred in 155,991 patients (Table 1). The most common cancer was prostate cancer (66,812 patients) followed by bladder cancer (41,549 patients), kidney cancer (36,836 patients), renal pelvis and ureter cancer (7,537 patients), testis cancer (2,439 patients), and penile cancer (818 patients)".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), a natural compound sulforaphane (SFN) anti-urologic cancer effects.

According to the tested analysis, the application of SFN shows a remarkable anti-tumor effect in vitro and in vivo without exerting toxicity.

Furthermore, based on available evidence from epidemiological, in vitro, preclinical, and early phase trials, SFN was not only available in standardized formulations but bioavailable- both systemically and in the bladder but also exerted a significant anti bladder cancer through multiple mechanisms.

Additionally, similar to its effects on urological cancer, SFN induced cancer apoptosis without causing cytotoxicity.

Collectively, researchers said, "sulforaphane (SFN) represents a promising potential chemopreventative agent in bladder cancer".

Taken altogether, Broccoli processed abundant bioactive compound SFN, which may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of urologic tumors, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthyfood #Carrots in Reducing the Risk of #Cancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Carrots, the root veggie may have a potential and positive effect in blocking the proliferation of cancer cells, some scientists suggested.

Cancer is a class of chronic and medical diseases characterized by irregular and disordered cell growth in one or some tissue and organs in the body.

Most cancers start from the inner lining of the tissue of the organs and then slowly spread to the deeper parts of the infected organs. At the advanced stage, most malignant cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most cancer diagnosed at an early have a 100% 5 years survival rate.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian public health service, during their lifetime, nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.

Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada and over 25% of all cancer deaths in Canada are due to lung cancer.

The causes of cancers are unknown, however, scientists around the world agreed that there are several risk factors such as gene mutations inherited from the parents and acquired gene mutations caused by smoking, radiation, viruses, chemicals carcinogens, obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation, and physical inactivity are associated to the early onset of cancer.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the investigation of the claim of Lebanese folk medicine that Daucus carota, also known as wild carrot has a potency for the treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Lebanese American University, conducted an experience to identify the major compound responsible for the anti-cancer activity of DCOE.

β-2-himachalen-6-ol, a novel sesquiterpene unique to β-2-Himachalen-6-ol isolated from the Lebanese wild carrot demonstrated potent anti-cancer activity against B16F-10, Caco-2, MB-MDA-231, A549, and SF-268 cancer cells (IC50 13-4µg/ml; 58-18µM), and SF-268 cells.

Furthermore, the sesquiterpene was shown to induce cell death through apoptosis (flow cytometry), decrease 2D cell motility (wound healing assay) and 3D invasion, as well as increase cell adhesion in SF-268 cells.

Additionally, β-2-himachalen-6-ol showed very low toxicity.

These results suggested that wild carrot β-2-himachalen-6-ol may have a potential multi-mechanistic chemotherapeutic drug with high potency and safety.

Moreover, the concerns about the mortality rate caused by gastric cancer, researchers at the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences conducted a review by searching multiple databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Persian databases like Scientific Information Database (SID) and IranMedx to determine the relationship between carrot consumption and gastric cancer.

Out of 81 articles found in the databases, only 5 studies that satisfied the medical guidelines and criteria were included in the review. after taking into account co and confounders, researchers found that
* Intake of carrots regularly reduced the risk of gastric cancer by 26%.

* There is an inverse relationship between the consumption of carrots and the risk of gastric cancer.

More interestingly, regarding the inconsistent results. associated with carrot intake and prostate cancer risk, researchers at Zhejiang University also launched a review by searching the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Register, and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure to to determine whether the intake of carrot may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

In the final report, researchers found that
* Intake of carrots is associated with a significantly decreased risk of prostate cancer with the odds ratio of 0.82 which is consistent with the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences study.

* For each serving per week or 10 g per day increment of carrot intake, the odds ratio of the risk of prostate cancer was 0.95, according to the dose-response meta-analysis.

The findings indicated that the intake of carrots may have a potential effect in reducing the risk of the onset of cancers.

However, due to the limited number of cohort studies and substantial heterogeneity observed between studies in this meta-analysis, further well-designed prospective studies are warranted to confirm the findings from the studies.

#Herbal #Burdock in the Inhibition of #Cancers, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Burdock is planted in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro. It has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and blood-purifying agent to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers, and other digestive problems.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying in disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, have become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, sometimes spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

Arctigenin, a dietary phytoestrogen and natural lignan product of Arctium lappa L inhibited human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cell growth by inducing apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Another lignan constituent, Arctic of Arctium lappa, induced suppression of cyclin D1 protein expression occurs in various types of human tumor cells, including osteosarcoma, lung, colorectal, cervical and breast cancer, melanoma, transformed renal cells, and prostate cancer.

The Side effects
1. Overdose can be poisoning and may lead to symptoms of acute poisoning including phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants, and antihistamines.
2. It may cause dermatitis and allergic/inflammatory responses in certain people with contact as a result of the lactones that the plant produces.
3. Do not use burdock if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

#Bromelain Inhibits the Antibodies Against the Onset of #LungCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cells in the lung tissues caused by the alternation of cells' DNA.

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream, and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

According to the statistics, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. In n 2007. lung caused the death of 158,683 Americans, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women i

There are several types of lung cancer including
1. Non-small cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer grown and spread methodically and predictably, includes
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung.

*Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube.

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

2. Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung cancer is an aggressive type of lung cancer. The cells of small cell cancer have been found to spread to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage.
* Small cell carcinoma in which the cells are small, round, and resemble oats.

* Mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma, the malignant tumor is found in combining components of small cell lung carcinoma with large cell lung carcinoma.

* Combined small cell carcinoma, the malignant tumor is found in combining of a component of small cell lung carcinoma with components of non-small cell lung carcinoma

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of lung cancer, some researchers suggested smokers are at substantial risk of the disease.

Dr. Ozlü T the lead scientist wrote, "It is estimated that deaths attributable to tobacco use will rise to 10 million by 2025, and one-third of all adult deaths are expected to be related to cigarette smoking".

And, "Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking. The risk of lung cancer development is 20-40 times higher in lifelong smokers compared to non-smokers".

The results strongly suggested that if you are a smoker, your risk of lung cancer developing is rocketing.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient against lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of the antitumor effect of fastuosain, a cysteine proteinase from Bromelia fastuosa on the intravenous model of lung colonization in C57Bl/6 mice.

According to the tested assays, fastuosain showed reduced expression of the marker of cancer progression (CD44) and decreased invasion by inhibiting cancer cell communication and inflammation in tumor cells.

Furthermore, fastuosain also induced cancer apoptosis by blocking the function enzymes associated with cell proliferation.

Interestingly, in green fluorescent protein-chimeric animals, treatment with fastuosain did not change the number of cells that migrated to the lung, compared to PBS-injected control mice, but the number of positive major histocompatibility complex class II cells associated with antigens was increased significantly.

In other words, fastuosain anti-lung cancer activity is mainly involved in the direct effect of the enzyme and elicitation of protective antibodies.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Allicin Stimulates the Immune Cells Against the Risk of #PancreaticCancer, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a single ingredient isolated from garlic for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Cancer of the pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a medical condition of a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas, as the cells have become cancerous and divided uncontrollably.

Most pancreatic cancers start in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices. Pancreatic cancers originating in the glandular tissue account for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.

At the advanced stage, cancerous cells from the pancreas may travel a distance away to exhibit secondary metastasis.

In Canada, the 5-year net survival including all stages of pancreatic cancer is 8%. In other words, 92% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die after 5 years.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, every year, approximately an estimated 55,000 adults (29,000 men and 26,000 women) in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The incidence rates are 25% higher in black people, compared to white people.

Researchers do not know the causes of the disease. However, age, gender, ethnicity, smoking habit, poor diet, and certain medical condition such as diabetes are associated with the prevalent risks of pancreatic cancer.

Some researchers suggested that pancreatic cancer is also found in high numbers in obese patients and patients with a family history of the disease, compared to others.

Dr. Silverman DT in the assessment of risk factors for pancreatic cancer, in a population-based case-control study of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in Atlanta (GA), Detroit (MI), and ten New Jersey counties from August 1986 through April 1989, including 526 incident cases and 2,153 population controls. wrote, "elevated body mass index and caloric intake had increased risk".

And, " A three-fold risk of pancreatic cancer among first-degree relatives of affected individuals was apparent. Increased risk also was associated with a family history of colon, endometrial, ovary, and breast cancer, suggesting a possible link to hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer".

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

In finding the natural compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the efficacy of combined treatment of the recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) and allicin on pancreatic cancer.

The study includes a total of 60 C57/BL6 nude mice pancreatic cancer xenograft models randomized and assigned into four groups of 15 mice per group: control group, allicin treatment group, rIL-2 treatment group, combined treatment with allicin, and rIL-2 group.

Mice in each group were treated with saline, rIL-2, allicin, or a combination of rIL-2 and allicin by weekly i.v injection for four weeks.

Treatment with the allicin and rIL-2 group significantly suppressed the xenograft growth and prolonged survival time, compared to other groups. Truly, the combined therapy group exerted the most amounts of apoptotic cells.

The combined treatment group anti-pancreatic cancer efficacy was attributed to the activation of levels of CD4+T, in stimulating other immune cells, killing cancer cells, and natural killer cells.

Furthermore, allicin and rIL-2 also increased the levels of Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), a cytokine produced by a variety of cells involved in the immune response against cancer cells, compared to other groups.

Dr. the lead researcher wrote in the final paper, "Combined treatment with allicin and rIL-2 resulted in suppression of tumor growth and prolonged survival time possibly through activation of CD4+T, CD8+T and NK cell".

Taken altogether, allicin isolated from the garlic may be considered a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

However, intake of allicin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of overdose toxicity.
