Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Processes Anti-Inflammatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nerves system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to the cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens before they can enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is a result of a prolonged period of inflammation that lasts for several months and even years caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all harmful microorganisms during the acute phase of infection.

Chronic inflammation can also be caused by an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system continuously attacks normal and healthy tissue, by mistaking them for pathogens.

Most common types of inflammatory diseases are
* Asthma
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

* Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Commonly, the bacterium attacked the lung tissue but in some cases, it also can cause major damage to other parts of the body.

The disease is very contagious, as types of bacteria that cause TB can spread from person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air.

* Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body. The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.

* Periodontitis
Periodontitis is a severe stage of gingivitis that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth, leading to teeth loosen or tooth loss.

Fig is a species of F. carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activity of  Common Fig or Fig (F. carica) leaves on various inflammatory conditions like painful or swollen piles, insect sting, and bites.

According to the chemical analysis, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the leaves was associated with the chemical compound steroids and flavanoids, respectively.

Furthermore, the efficacy of the whole food leaves was also found to attributed to the capacity of free radical scavenging activity.

In other words, fig leaves reduce the oxidative stress in inducing symptoms that are stimulated by the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

However, researchers wrote, "Further work is also required to isolate and characterize the active constituents responsible for the anti-inflammatory activities".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig may be considered a remedy for the treatment of inflammatory symptoms,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli's Sulforaphane (SFN), the Natural Pulmonary Injury Protector

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs are a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.

Lung diseases are a group of medical conditions that cause the reduced function of the lung inhaling oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pulmonary diseases are a class of diseases associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

Pulmonary injury protection is the process that protects the lung functioning against damage or injury.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

In smokers, the Vaping-associated pulmonary injury (VAPI) associated with an e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI), recently has been found to induce pulmonary injury.

The ATS journals in the study of the "Vaping-associated Pulmonary Illness (VAPI)" wrote, "To date, the CDC has reported an epidemic of “severe lung disease” caused by vaping. Patients have presented with a range of symptoms, including shortness of breath, fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness and chest pain following the use of vaping devices".

And, "As of September 16th 2019, the CDC has confirmed six deaths attributed to VAPI, and is evaluating over 350 cases.".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find natural food for the prevention of pulmonary injury protection, researchers examined the effects of Sulforaphane (SFN) and standardized broccoli sprout extract diet (SBE) on pre-activation of Nrf2-ARE signaling protects lungs from an oxidant-induced acute injury.

According to the results of wild-type (Nrf2+/+) and Nrf2-deficient (Nrf2-/-) mice given SFN orally or as standardized broccoli sprout extract diet (SBE) before hyperoxia or air exposure-induced pulmonary injury and oxidation Indice, SFN or SBE in Nrf2+/+ mice but not in Nrf2-/- mice showed a strong activity in protecting the lung against the lung oxidative stress.

Furthermore, SFN upregulated a large cluster of basal lung genes that are involved in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, energy metabolism, and cardiovascular protection only in Nrf2+/+ mice.

Compared to the transcript abundance of the mitochondrial machinery genes which are remained significantly higher after hyperoxia exposure, SFN-treated Nrf2+/+ mice are lower than in SFN-treated Nrf2-/- mice.

In other words, the preactivation of antioxidant enzymes pathways Nrf2 plays an important role in enhancing the function of phytochemical SFN.

Moreover, nuclear factor-κB associated with the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines expression also was showed that the efficacy of SFN also involved the molecule in transcriptome networks.

Collectively, researchers said, "SFN is suggested to be as a preventive intervention in a preclinical model of acute lung injury by linking mitochondria and Nrf2. Administration of SFN alleviated acute lung injury-like pathogenesis in an Nrf2-dependent manner".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of pulmonary injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Oleanolic Acid, The Promising Anti-Lung Cancer Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Additionally, the lung also processes other ability in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.

* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming air embolisms.

* The airflow produced by the lung also help us to speak.

* The lung also protects the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells. In the US, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 people deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistic.

Most common types of non-mall cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. It usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung,
* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube
* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effect of triterpenoids, such as oleanolic acid (OA) and hederagenin on lung cancer.

According to the results of the analysis of the synthetic compound 17 OA/hederagenin-NO donor hybrids,
* The most potent compound, 13, significantly inhibited the proliferation of five tumor cell lines (IC50 4.6-5.2 μM), while hederagenin inhibited the growth of only A549 tumor cells (IC50 > 10 μM).

* The compounds 13 showed stronger inhibitory effects on EGFR-LTC kinase activity (IC50 0.01 μM) that prevents autophagic cell death than hederagenin (IC50 > 20 μM) and inhibited the proliferation of gefitinib-resistant H1975 (IC50 8.1 μM) and osimertinib-resistant H1975-LTC (IC50 7.6 μM) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells.

* Moreover, compound 13 produced the most NO in H1975 tumor cells, which indicated that NO may play a synergistic role in the inhibition of lung cancer cells.

Collectively, researchers said, "compound 13, a novel hederagenin-NO donor hybrid with a different chemical structure from those of the current FDA-approved EGFR-targeted anti-NSCLC drugs".

Taken altogether, oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ursolic Acid, The Potential Cancer Immunotherapy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

The causes of cancer are unknown. age, excessive alcohol drinking, exposure to cancer causing-substances, diseases associated with chronic inflammation, unhealthy diet, hormones therapy, use of immunosuppression are some of the prevalent factors involved in the onset of cancer.
Cancer immunotherapy is a type of treatment used to treat cancer patients that involve or uses components of the immune system.

Depending on types of cancer immunotherapies, some may consist of antibodies that bind or inhibit the expression of proteins in the cancer cells.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of ursolic acid (UA), a potent triterpenoid compound found in plants and fruits with activities modulating key cell-signaling pathways in cancer.

According to the analysis of the development of UA-liposomes made by HPβCD assisted active loading,
* Compared to lipid suspensions of UA (Lipid-UA) with similar lipid composition, the novel process enabled the formation of UA-Ca crystalline structures inside the liposomes and therefore sustained release of UA in vivo.
* UA-liposomes were not generally toxic towards 4T1 triple-negative breast cancer cells, they could effectively modulate CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ in regulating T cells from 4T1 tumor-bearing mouse by inhibiting the inflammatory cytokines.

* In vivo, the administration of UA-liposomes at 10 mg/kg dose led to reduced numbers of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and regulatory T cells (Tregs) residing in tumor tissues

Collectively, researchers said, "These changes signified the correction of the tumor mediated immune-suppressive microenvironment. The UA-liposomes treatment alone was already effective in deterring tumor growth. Such a formulation may be highly promising as an immunotherapy agent and be combined with chemotherapeutics or targeted drugs",

Taken altogether, Ursolic acid may be considered adjunct-immunotherapy. therapies in the treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Ursolic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol Protects the Kidney Against Acute Nephrotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.

The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.

Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by a poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American physician association, long term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.

And people with age over 60 are at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

According to the information provided by the WHO, each year, around 1.7 million people are thought to die from acute kidney injury. Overall, therefore, an estimated 5–10 million people die annually from kidney disease.

Furthermore, in 2010, an estimated 2.3–7.1 million people with end-stage kidney disease died without access to chronic dialysis.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of plant sterol β-sitosterol on acute nephrotoxicity.

In vivo, the male albino Wistar rats were randomly grouped into four:
* Group 1 was vehicle control rats (0.1% carboxymethyl cellulose [CMC]);

* Group 2 was rats treated with N-diethylnitrosamine (DEN) (200 mg/kg body weight [bw] i.p. on the 15th day) and ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA) (9 mg/kg BW i.p. on 30th and 32nd days);

* Group 3 was rats that received β-sitosterol (20 mg/kg BW in 0.1% CMC, p.o. for 32 days) 2 weeks prior to the exposure to the nephrotoxins; and

* Group 4 was rats that received β-sitosterol alone.

According to the experimental results that were terminated after the 24 h of the last dosage of Fe-NTA, and all the animals were sacrificed,
* DEN and Fe-NTA treated animals induced the elevated parameters of stress markers, reduced antioxidant and increased lipid peroxidation and inflammatory markers in the kidney.

* However, the β-sitosterol pretreated group restored all altered biochemical parameters back to near normal by upregulating the function of antioxidant enzyme protein Nrf2 expression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Administration of β-sitosterol to nephrotoxicity induced rats showed significant positive changes in biochemical parameters, histopathological and immunohistochemical observations, and up-regulation of Nrf2 gene expression".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of acute nephrotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Process Anti Non Melanoma Cancer Activity in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin, a large organ that forms the out layers of our body has serval layers of ectodermal tissue that protect the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments, and internal organs against foreign pathogenic invasion.

Skin cancer is a medical condition characterized by disordered and irregular cell growth in the skin.

Most cases of primary skin cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner ling of the skin. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the skin to infect other healthy tissue and organ through blood and fluid circulation.

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer but less common to other skin cancer as a result of malignancy of melanocytes, which is the cell produced dark pigment for your skin.

Approximately 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. melanoma tends to spread along the skin in most of the cases, but also can grow down to the deeper layers of the skin. At the later stage, it can spread to distant parts of the body, including organs.

Most cases of melanoma start in the melanocytes or pigment-producing cells in the outer layer of the skin. However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel through the circulation of blood and fluids to infect other healthy cells and tissue, leading to secondary metastasis.

The liver, lungs, bones, and brain are most often affected by melanoma metastases.

According to statistic, the risk of melanoma is largely depended on the race. The lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 2.5% (1 in 40) for whites, 0.1% (1 in 1,000) for blacks, and 0.5% (1 in 200) for Hispanics.

The 5 years survival rate of melanoma is closed to 100% if the disease is diagnosed in the localized stages.

In the US, every year, approximately 96,480 new melanomas are diagnosed, leading to the death of 7,000 people.

In North America, most cases of melanoma are associated with UVB exposure, causing the alteration of the cell DNA.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer is a type of skin cancer involved in basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the role of omega-3 FA in the prevention of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC).

According to the results of the analysis
* Dietary omega-3 FA dramatically reduces the plasma and cutaneous pro-inflammatory and immunosuppressive PGE(2) levels in vivo, compared to dietary omega-6 FA in the increase of prostaglandin E synthase type 2 (PGE(2)) level.

* Dietary omega-3 FA significantly reduces the inflammatory response and sustains, or enhances, the delayed-type hypersensitivity immune response in mice when compared to an equivalent dietary level of omega-6 FA.

* Supplementary omega-3 FA significantly increases the UVR-mediated erythema threshold in humans.

Furthermore, supplementary omega-3 FA significantly reduces the level of pro-inflammatory and immunosuppressive PGE(2) levels in Ultraviolet B-irradiated human skin.

In other words, omega-3 FA showed a strong implication on the immune response in the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC).

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of skin cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica), the Potential Antioxidant Healthy Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Fig is a species of F. carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the chemical compounds' antioxidant activity of fruits of six commercial fig varieties differing in color (black, red, yellow, and green).
According to the tested differentiation,
* The Hydrolysis revealed cyanidin as the major aglycon.

* Proton and carbon NMR assays confirmed cyanidin-3-O-rhamnoglucoside (cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside; C3R) as the main anthocyanin in all fruits.

* Color of fig extracts is correlated well with total polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity.

More precisely. the extracts of darker varieties showed higher contents of phytochemicals compared to lighter colored varieties and the fruit skins contributed most of the above phytochemicals and antioxidant activity compared to the fruit pulp.

* The antioxidant capacity is also correlated well with the amounts of polyphenols and anthocyanins.

In other words, the anthocyanin fraction contributed 36 and 28% of the total antioxidant capacity, respectively. C3R contributed 92% of the total antioxidant capacity of the anthocyanin fraction.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Fruits of the Mission variety contained the highest levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins and exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity".

Taken altogether, common fig processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a natural anti-oxidative stress remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
