Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Onset of Sepsis

By Kyle J. Norton

Sepsis is a medical condition caused by chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection that triggers inflammation throughout the body as a result of severe infection.

According to the study by the University of Utah, the disease is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICUs across the world.

Mortality from sepsis continues to be high. Besides shock and multi-organ dysfunction occurring following the intense inflammatory reaction to sepsis, complications arising from sepsis-related immunoparalysis contribute to the morbidity and mortality from sepsis.

Most common symptoms of sepsis are
* Chilly periphery, fever, jaundice, platelet, and hemoglobin

* Abnormalities of blood pressure, respiration, temperature, and heart rate, and less well-known changes in heart rate variability

* Significantly decreased urine output but accumulative fluid balance had a weak correlation with delta sequential organ failure assessment score (r = 0.32, P = 0.001) and lung injury score (r = 0.13, P = 0.02) and negative correlation with PaO2/FIO2 ratio (r = -0.28, P = 0.001).

* Abrupt change in mental status, difficulty breathing and abnormal blood circulation.

According to the statistics from the CDC, approximately 1.7 million adults in America were infected by sepsis, leading to the death of 270,000 Americans every year.

Sadly, 1 in 3 patients who die in a hospital has sepsis.

Early recognition of sepsis and septic shock in children relies on obtaining an attentive clinical history, accurate vital signs, and a physical examination focused on mental status, work of breathing, and circulatory status, according to the study by the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of life-threatening infection, researchers examined the Tussilagone, extracted from Tussilago farfara inhibitory effects on puncture (CLP)-induced mouse model of sepsis.

According to the tested differentiation, the extracts at 1 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg showed a significant effect on decreased mortality and lung injury in CLP-activated septic mice.

Enzyme and proteins associated with the production of inflammatory expressions such as cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and TNF-α in tested septic mice were also attenuated by Tussilago administration.

Furthermore, CLP induced expression of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, TNF-α and HMGB 1 associated with inflammatory cytokines in the serum of the septic mice was also suppressed the administration of the extract.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Overall, Tussilago exhibited protective effects against inflammation and polymicrobial sepsis by suppressing inflammatory mediators possibly via the inhibition of NF-κB activation and the MAP kinase pathway.".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of disease associated with sepsis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica May Reduce the Mortality Rate in Patients with Sepsis

By Kyle J. Norton

Sepsis is a condition caused by chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection that triggers inflammation throughout the body as a result of severe infection(a)(b). according to the study by the University of Utah, sepsis is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICUs across the world.

Mortality from sepsis continues to be high. Besides shock and multi-organ dysfunction occurring following the intense inflammatory reaction to sepsis, complications arising from sepsis-related immunoparalysis contribute to the morbidity and mortality from sepsis(c).

The most common risk factors associated with the prevalent factors of sepsis, term infants, while very low birth weight (VLBW) and preterm infants, obesity, operative vaginal delivery and age <25 years, elderly, patient in intensive care and with the weakened immune system, invasive devices, and alcoholism.

Diseases associated with Sepsis are
* Staphylococcal infections
Preterm infants are especially susceptible to late-onset sepsis that is often due to Gram-positive bacterial infections resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality(24).

* Elevated central venous pressure
Elevated central venous pressure is associated with impairment of microcirculatory blood flow in sepsis(25).

* Neonatal cellulitis
There is a report of a case of late-onset neonatal invasive group A streptococcal disease characterized with rapidly progressing cellulitis and development of sepsis(26).

* Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
There is a report of the spectrum of community-acquired S. aureus infections and to compare the patients infected with methicillin-susceptible or methicillin-resistant strains among patients aged <20 years. Overall, 90 cases of community-acquired S. aureus were detected in an 11-year period(27).

* Bladder infection
Bladder bacteria is a common but unique cause for sepsis(28).

* Urinary tract infection
In the study to evaluate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus GG supplementation in reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs), bacterial sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, found that seven days of Lactobacillus GG supplementation starting with the first feed is not effective in reducing the incidence of UTIs, NEC, and sepsis in preterm infants. Further studies are required to confirm our results in lower birth weight populations(29).

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the effects of Xuebijing injection (XBJ), a Chinese patent medicine on sepsis.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the search of medical literature in Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) and the Wanfang database from inception to June 6, 2017, including relevant RCTs comparing XBJ combined with RT and RT alone for sepsis,
* 1602 records and 16 RCTs (1144 patients) identified suggested that the combined therapy reduced 28-day mortality and body temperature.

* WBC count improved with combined medication at high dosages (one study included, 40/1144, MD -8.00, 95% CI -10.18 to -5.82) with no reduction at moderate dosages.

* However, moderate-quality evidence indicated positive results with low dosages.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study suggested that supplementation with XBJ in addition to regular treatment may improve the 28-day mortality rate, APACHE Ⅱ scores, WBC count and body temperature of sepsis patients without serious adverse events".

Taken altogether, angelica used combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of sepsis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry, a Natural Gingipain Inhibitor

By Kyle J. Norton

Periodontitis is a severe stage of gingivitis that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth, leading to teeth loosen or tooth loss.

Systemic diseases are a group of condition that affects other parts of the body, or even the whole body.

The most common symptomatic disorders are high blood pressure that affects the brain and diseases associated with the circulatory system or systemic disease flu that affects the entire body.

An infection in the bloodstream is called a systemic infection.

Most common systemic diseases are
* Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders(1). According to the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

 * Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

* Sickle cell anemia
Sickle cell anemia (SCD), a genetic preposition form of anemia is a condition associated with not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body.

The red blood cells in sickle cell anemia patines are rigid and sticky with the shapes of sickles or crescent moons.

The normal red blood cells live for about 120 days compared to the sickle cells that die in 10 to 20 days. In other words, the inability of the body to replace the cell that dies rapidly with new blood cells is a cause of sickle cell anemia.

Other systemic diseases may include diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, influenza, diabetes mellitus, trauma, Alzheimer's disease, renal diseases, septicemia, and liver diseases.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases that affect part or whole body, researchers investigated the cranberry and rice extracts effect on gingipains associated with
periodontitis and systemic diseases.

According to the tested results, the administration of cranberry and rice extracts interfere with gingipain activity and prevent the growth and biofilm formation of periodontopathogens.

In other words, the tested extract showed a gingipain inhibition that represents a novel approach to treat and prevent periodontitis.

The cranberry rice extract as a gingipain inhibitor may also help treat systemic disorders that are associated with periodontitis, including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, aspiration pneumonia, pre-term birth, and low birth weight.

Taken altogether, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of systemic diseases in patients with periodontitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus), the Potential Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor

By Kyle J. Norton

The brain of mammals contains two major forms of cholinesterases: acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE).

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the primary enzyme that hydrolyzes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to choline and acetate.

Altered levels of ACh in the nervous system have been found to induce several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington, depending on the affected areas.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) enzyme plays a minor role in regulating brain acetylcholine (ACh) levels.

A cholinergic neuron is a nerve cell which mainly is used by  the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) to send its messages

Impairment of the cholinergic neuronal system in the brain was involved in the underlying event of cognitive impairment.

Cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI) has been used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belongings to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with the menopause, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of associated with neurodegenerative diseases, researchers examined ethyl acetate, methanol, and water extracts prepared from the branches, leaves, and fruits of Viburnum opulus and Viburnum lantana along with salicin on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory and antioxidant activities.

In vitro, according to the results from an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the leaf methanol extract of V. opulus displayed a significantly high inhibitory effect against AChE at 50, 100, and 200 μL/mL concentrations of 57.63%, 87%, and 93%, respectively compared to other extracts.

In other words, the leaf methanol extract of V. opulus showed the highest protective activity against the disruption of neuron in the induction of neurodegenerative diseases linearly in a doses dependent-manner.

Compared to Viburnum opulus, the extracts of V. lantana exerted higher antioxidant activity.

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) leaves may be considered a functional acetylcholinesterase inhibitor herb medicine for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Herbal Medicines that Treat Unspecific Low Back Pain

By Kyle J. Norton

By Kyle J. Norton

Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) of degenerative disc disease, with pain persisted for longer than 3 months, affecting over 80% of the population in the US alone some points in their life.

Chronic LBP prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than the 21-to-44-year age group and inflicted more disabled, longer symptom duration, etc.(2). The unique impact of CLBP is unknown(3).

Acute lower back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) caused by injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs that last less than a few months.

Chronic lower back pain that lasts longer than 6 months, normally caused by damage of nerves in the low back which supplies sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

According to the statistics, up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives. The condition affects people of all ages, particularly in occupations required the use of muscles of the lower back often.

Worldwide, years lived with a disability caused by low back pain have increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015.

Depending on the severity of the condition, chronic lower back pain can induce symptoms of numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and intense, constant pain that gets worse at night.

Some people with chronic lower back pain may also experience symptoms of loss of bowel or bladder control and unexplained weight loss.

According to the statistics, the lifetime prevalence of non-specific (common) low back pain is estimated at 60% to 70% in industrialized countries with a one-year prevalent rate ranging from 15% to 45%. The adult incidence of lower back pain is 5% per year.

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relief pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with neuro and muscle pain, researchers examined the effectiveness of herbal medicine, including comfrey for nonspecific low back pain (LBP).

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involved in the searching of studies published on numerous electronic databases up to September 2014 found 14 RCTs with 2050 participants/

Capsicum frutescens (cayenne) reduces pain more than placebo.

Although Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Salix alba (white willow bark), Symphytum officinale L. (comfrey), Solidago chilensis (Brazilian arnica), and Lavender essential oil also seem to reduce pain more than placebo, evidence for these substances was of moderate quality at best.

All tested herbal medicine herbal showed no significant adverse events within the included trials.
Taken altogether, Comfrey and other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of unspecific low back pain, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Processes a Strong Anti-Inflammatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.

Macrophages are one of the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nerves system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to the cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

However, in some cases, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to abnormal skin healing and the formation of irreversible scars.

Chronic inflammation is a result of a prolonged period of inflammation that lasts for several months and even years caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all harmful microorganisms during the acute phase of infection.

Low-grade inflammation is a different type of chronic inflammation characterized by a production of the inflammatory cytokines in a low-grade state.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) and other prescription NSAIDs.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effect of a hot water extract of C. longa L. (WEC) containing anti-inflammatory agents, bisacurone, and turmerone on chronic inflammation.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study included middle-aged and elderly subjects aged 50-69 years with overweight or prehypertension/mild hypertension assigned to consume 900 mg WEC tablets, containing 400 μg bisacurone, 80 μg turmeronol A and 20 μg turmeronol B (WEC group: n = 45), or placebo tablets without WEC (placebo group: n = 45) daily for 12 weeks.

Based on the experimental results, WEC treatment group showed a significant decrease in the serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 associated with WEC anti-inflammatory activities.

Furthermore, the WEC group had significantly lower serum levels of glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and triglycerides, and higher serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to the placebo group

Moreover, according to the SF-36 score and PMOS and, WEC also improved the general health, vitality, mental health, mental summary component and mood states (vigor-activity and friendliness, respectively.

Based on the results, researchers said, "WEC may ameliorate chronic low-grade inflammation, thus contributing to the improvement of associated metabolic disorders and general health".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or a combination with other phytochemicals may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Legume, the Natural Anti-Hypercholesterolemic Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

The cause of hypercholesterolemia is a result of overexpression of low-density lipoprotein with reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein in the blood.

In other words, the condition is a result caused by either overexpression of "bad" cholesterol (LDL) or low levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Compared to hypercholesterolemia, the healthy levels of LDL/HDL are any numbers that are less than 4.

There is no single cause of hypercholesterolemia. Epidemiologically, diet, obesity, genetic preposition and medical conditions such as diseases such as type 2 diabetes and an underactive thyroid are some of the prevalent factors associated with the risk of the condition.

Legume is a class of fruits or seeds of a plant group in the family Fabaceae (or Leguminosae), cultivated all over the world as foods for commercial profits.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterols, researchers investigated the impact of potential health benefits of legumes as a good source of dietary fiber such as cowpeas, mung beans, pole sitao, chickpeas, green peas, groundnuts, pigeon peas, kidney beans, lima beans and soybeans against hypercholesterolemia.

According to the tested analysis,
* In vitro, the legume showed a good glycaemic index (GI) in non-diabetic and diabetic human subjects.

*The legume exerted a cholesterol-lowering effect in human subjects with moderately raised serum cholesterol levels.

* Kidney beans showed significant reductions for both total (6 %) and LDL-cholesterol (9 %), and groundnuts for total cholesterol (7 %; P < 0.05), compared to other types of legume.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "legumes are considered low-GI foods and have shown potential hypocholesterolemic effects. The above studies can be a scientific basis for considering legumes as functional foods".

Taken altogether, legume may be considered a functional food for the prevention of hypercholesterolemia,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
