Broccoli in the Prevention and treatment of fatty Liver in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is the early stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver, other than excessive use of alcohol.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition is developed into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars and reduced the performance of the liver.

In other words, if more than 5% – 10% percent of your liver’s weight is fat, you have a fatty liver (steatosis).
The prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among the more affluent regions of China, is approximately 15%. The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taking into account.

In the US, over 100 million people have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the condition is more double over the past 20 years. Today, the disease also is also prevalent in liver disease in children.

Most people at the early stage NAFLD are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progression into the later stage, most patients experience symptoms of right upper abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and/or malaise, and jaundice(20) with yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of dietary broccoli protects against fatty liver development.

The study included male 15-day-old C57BL/6J mice that were given DEN and placed on a Western or Western+10% Broccoli diet from the age of 4 weeks through 7 months. prior to exposure to the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN).

According to the results of the analysis,
* Dietary broccoli decreased hepatic triacylglycerols, NAFLD, liver damage and tumor necrosis factor by month 5 without changing body weight or relative liver weight induced by hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN).

* However, broccoli feeding did not low liver carcinogenesis, observed in 100% of tested mice.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " We conclude that broccoli, a good source of sulforaphane, slows the progression of hepatic lipidosis, but not tumourigenesis in this robust model".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered functional food for the prevention of fatty liver, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Beans, the Natural Diabetes Management Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.

In other words, diabetes is a condition associated with the inability of the body to use insulin properly.

Most cases of insulin insufficiency in the bloodstream in diabetes are either caused by the died-off of the pancreas beta cells or insulin receptors clogged-up by fat and cholesterol. Hallmarks of diabetes are hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.

According to the statistics, in 2017, 7.3% of Canadians aged 12 and older (roughly 2.3 million people) reported being diagnosed with diabetes

Most common causes of diabetes are
* Metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose
associated with an increased risk of diabetes.

* Gestational diabetes
High blood glucose of pregnant women has been found to increase the risk of diabetes in later life.

* Prediabetes
Most cases of prediabetes are caused by unhealthy diets with high saturated fat, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking. Prediabetes is a high-risk state for diabetes, especially in patients who remain with prediabetes despite intensive lifestyle intervention.

* Damage to the Pancreas causes the gradual and irreversible loss of beta cells that reduce the production of insulin

Most common complication of diabetes is associated with the damage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the related organ and tissues, leading to the risk for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications, including nerve damage, kidney damage, eye damage, and foot damage.

Unlike type 1 diabetes caused by the immune system which attacks the beta cell in the pancreas, type 2 diabetes is mostly associated with an unhealthy lifestyle.

The NIH wrote, " unhealthy lifestyle factors – smoking, inactivity, overweight or obesity, and poor diet – and shift work have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes".
Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent veggie for the prevention of type 2 diabetes, researchers investigated green bean pods (Phaseolus vulgaris) used in traditional remedies for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

According to the results provided by the Philipps-University, Marburg, although studies of bean pod in the 20th century showed contradictory results, Phaseolus preparations should not be considered the first choice in the phytopharmaceutical treatment of diabetes or lead structure research because the effects of bean pod for the treatment diabetes may require to a fairly high doses of aqueous extracts.

In other words, fiber content and an alpha-amylase inhibitory effect, green bean food chemical components may be considered testing components for the prevention or amelioration of type 2 diabetes.

Conclusively, green bean pods fiber and food components may be used for prevention and treatment od types 2 diabetes by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals associated with reduced function of beta cells of the pancreas in the production of insulins

Taken altogether,  green beans pod chemical compounds found in the fiber and food may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Processes Anti-Nephrotoxicity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are essential bean shape organ of our body, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine.

Kidneys play a critical role in filtering blood with billions of glomeruli by separating the cells of blood from plasma and reabsorb back substances, and secret waste such as urea and ammonium are stored into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder.

Furthermore, kidneys also process the functions that regulate electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produce hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin, etc.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by a poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American physician association, long term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.

And people with age over 60 are at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

The most common symptoms of nephrotoxicity are associated with kidney dysfunction, including increased urine output, although occasionally urine output remains normal, fluid retention, swelling in your legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and weakness.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath (lung), confusion (brain) and irregular heartbeat (heart).

Fig is a species of F. carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined the effects of Ficus carica L. (Anjir) leaf extract on renal oxidative stress induced by gentamicin in albino mice.

The 8 days study included 30 mice that were divided into three groups, containing 10 mice each.
* Group A being the control

* Groups B were experimental and treated with gentamicin 200 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally and,

* Group C was treated by Ficus carica L. leaf extract 400 mg/kg/day orally with gentamicin 200 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally.

According to the tested differentiation,
* Gentamicin treatment group showed increased serum urea and creatinine levels an indication of kidney damage or kidney toxicity.

* Group treated by Ficus carica L. leaf extract showed a significant reduction in biochemical markers of kidney functions, compared to group B and control.

* According to the histopathological examination, group A showed normal renal structure which was deranged in group B treated with only gentamicin, compared to group C which exhibited marked improvement in histological structure.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Ficus carica L. leaf extract is effective in preventing gentamicin-induced functional and structural changes in kidney of albino mice.

Taken altogether, common fig processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a natural anti-oxidative stress-induced kidney toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Kale (Brassica Oleracea) Processes Anti Melanoma Activity in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin, a large organ that forms the out layers of our body has serval layers of ectodermal tissue and protects the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs against foreign pathogenic invasion.

Skin cancer is a medical condition characterized by disordered and irregular cell growth in the skin.

Most cases of primary skin cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner ling of the skin. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the skin to infect other healthy tissue and organ through blood and fluid circulation.

There are 3 main types of cells in the top layer of the skin (called the epidermis):
Squamous cells, Basal cells, and Melanocytes.

Long-term cumulative sun exposure is one of the major causes of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the leading cause of melanoma.

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer but less common to other skin cancer as a result of malignancy of melanocytes, which is the cell produced dark pigment for your skin.

Approximate 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. melanoma tends to spread along the skin in most of the cases, but also can grow down to the deeper layers of the skin. At the later stage, it can spread to distant parts of the body, including organs.

Certain risk factors that make some people susceptible to the development of skin cancer than others, include the increase in age, weakened immune system, gender, skin tone, genetic preposition, and family history.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belong to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale's leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long season from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of skin cancer, researchers examined the effect of kale juice prepared and added to melanoma, epithelial, and fibroblast cells.

According to the results of the analysis, all three juices made with an electric juicer, showed significant anti-cancer activity against B16F10 melanoma cells a dose-dependent decrease.

However, the growth rate of cells treated with an equivalent amount of unfiltered lettuce juice was not different from the untreated cells.

The sonicated and filter-sterilized extract also significantly reduced growth but had different effects on melanoma and epithelial cells.

Compared to non-cancerous cell lines and other juices, the kale juice was found to be non-toxic to the epithelial cells and the fibroblasts at the dosage that kills melanoma cells.

Furthermore, kale juice was the most effective by decreasing cancer cell growth with the lowest concentration.

Taken altogether, kale juice may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of melanoma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Leeks Curb Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly and uncontrollably in the breast tissue. At the early stage, in most cases, breast cancer starts in the cells of the inner lining tissue of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the advanced stage, breast cancer cells caused by the alternation of DNA can travel far away from the primary site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most patients at the early may have a lump when touching with no symptoms.

Patients who inherited the genetic preposition of BRCA1 and 2 are associated with over 60% of the risk of breast cancer.

The findings for effective treatments are ongoing with some successes, but the discovery of effective ingredients prevention and treatment of breast cancer with little or no side effects have proven difficult.

Detection of tumorigenesis through self-observation is still the best approach to discover breast cancer in an early stage.

According to statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the US alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Genetic preposition, one of the prevalent risk factor associated with the increased risk of breast cancer has been under intensifying study in scientists over the world over a few decades ago, suggested that women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60% most likely risk to develop breast cancer before the age of 70.

Another prevalent and most mentioned risk factor associated with the risk of the disease is obesity.

According to statistics, the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Leek is a genius of Allium, belonging to the vegetable family vegetable Alliacaea, the same as onion and garlic. Leeks are easy to grow from seed and usually reach maturity in the autumn months, and have few pest or disease problems.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effects of leek extracts on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells.

According to the crude extracts of ethanol, methanol, and water of leek obtained by maceration that were applied to MCF-7 cells in complete media at 37 °C and subjected to different treatments that involved varying concentrations (10, 50, and 100 μg/mL) of leek extracts for 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation, leeks showed a strong effect on cell viability and the concentration of extracts on MCF-7 cells.

The water leak extract proved to be the most effective extract at 50 μg/mL,

The efficacy of leek was attributed to the significant inhibition ability of the main chemical entadamide A-β-D-glucopyranoside found in the vegetable.

However, the mechanism of phytochemicals associated with the causes of breast cancer cell death was not identified in the study.

Taken altogether, leeks may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Peas Proteins Encapsulated probiotics May Induce Colonic Immune Response

By Kyle J. Norton

Probiotics are good bacteria that not only balance the ratio of gut microbiota in the intestine but also react with other body systems to provide optimal health in the human.

The most common types of probiotics are lactobacilli (like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus GG), bifidobacteria (like Bifidobacterium Bifidus) and some yeasts (like Saccharomyces boulardii).

Although all probiotics shared the same functions to improve the gastrointestinal microbiome community, different probiotics have different effects.

According to the article by Megan Ware RDN LD, Kefir as a probiotic has been found to process a number of health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose, improved lactose tolerance, and stomach health, weight control and promoted wound healing.

More precisely,
* In immunity, probiotics stimulate the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* In the digestive system, probiotics protect the gut against gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases.caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* In metabolism, probiotics influence the nutrient extraction from the diet, thus reducing the risk of obesity and obese complication.

* Neurologically, probiotics control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that play a critical role in neurobehaviors.

The immune response is a natural reaction of the immune system to protect our body against the invasion of foreign substances.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system which protects the body against the invasion of pathogens.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the improvement of gut microbiota, researchers investigated the efficacy of two strains of Lactobacillus probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and Lactobacillus helveticus R0052) immobilized in microcapsules composed of pea protein isolate (PPI) and alginate microcapsules.

The study included 4-week-old mice which were fed diets supplemented with freeze-dried probiotics (group P), probiotic-containing microcapsules (group PE) (lyophilized PPI-alginate microcapsules containing probiotics), or PPI-alginate microcapsules containing no probiotics (group E), including half of the mice (controls, groups P, PE, and E) received C. rodentium by gavage 2 weeks after initiation of feeding.

According to the symptomatic and histopathological data, infection with bacteria C. rodentium led to changes in cytokine expression, and alteration of the gut mucosal communities and a marked progression of infectious colitis.

The application of probiotics led to changes in most of the disease markers but did not have a significant impact on cytokine profiles in infected animals.

Furthermore, encapsulation materials (pea protein and calcium alginate) contributed to inflammation and worsened a set of symptoms in the cecum.

These results suggested that even though food ingredients may be generally recognized as safe, they may, in fact, contribute to the development of an inflammatory response in certain animal disease models.

Taken altogether, peas protein used as encapsulation materials may induce an inflammatory response to the colon, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Black Mustard Inhibits the Oxidative Stress induced Nephrotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys formed part of the secretary system are two bean-shaped organs located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area.

The kidneys play a critical role in filtering wastes from the breakdown of active muscle and the food you eat and removing extra water from the blood through urinary secretion.

Furthermore, the kidneys also maintain the fluid in the body by secreting extra water through urinary secretion.
Nephrotoxicity is a condition associated with toxicity in the kidneys induced by chemical toxins and chemicals and medications.

The nephrotoxicity induced kidney damage has been found in most patients' kidney failure.

Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a medical condition associated with the reduced function of the kidney due to the expression of oxidative stress in the kidney often observed by kidney oxidative stress markers.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by either overexpression of free radical or low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body.

In other words, the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants enzymes is the major cause of the onset of oxidative stress, leading to the damage of lipid, DNA, and protein in the cells of the host.

Free radicals are unstable and high reactive molecules with a single electron in the outer ring.

In order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other molecules, leading to a chain reaction that cannot be stopped until the electrons on the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the oxidation induced by free radicals.

Black mustard is a spice that belongs to an annual plant cultivated for its black or dark brown seeds native to tropical regions of North Africa, temperate regions of Europe, and parts of Asia.
On finding a potential plant that processes kidney protective activity researchers examined the protective effect of the methanol extract of B. nigra leaves against D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats.

The study included the administration of a methanol extract of B. nigra at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.wt. against D-GalN (500 mg/kg b.wt.) induced toxicity on tested rats, with silymarin used as the standard.

Compared to control, D-GalN-induced toxicity showed a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the serum and tissue inflammatory markers in toxic rats,

However, pretreatment of with The B. nigra in toxic groups (200 and 400 mg/kg b.wt.) exerted a strong (p < 0.001) reduction in the D-GalN-induced toxicity observed by the expression of biochemical parameters.

In other words, B. nigra leaf extract pretreatment protected the kidney tissue against damage induced by oxidation.

Furthermore, s the standard group treated by silymarin also showed a similar effect as of the experimental extract

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The crude methanol extract of B. nigra leaf lacks inherent toxicity and exhibits hepatic and nephroprotective effects against D-GalN-induced toxicity in Wistar rats".

Taken altogether, Black mustard may be considered a functional food for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
