Turmeric Inhibits Tumor Angiogenesis In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Angiogenesis is the process that promotes the formation of new blood vessels involving many factors including the migration, growth, and differentiation of endothelial cells.

In normal cells, angiogenesis is important for the cells to obtain nutrients and metabolites through the new forming small blood vessels. Angiogenesis has been found to process a therapeutic effect for the treatment of ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and wound healing.

Dr. Papetti M, the lead scientist at the Tufts University School of Medicine said, "Normal angiogenesis ensures that developing or healing tissues receive an adequate supply of nutrients".
In cancers, angiogenesis stimulated by the tumor cells has been associated with tumors proliferation and metastasis".

More precisely, the angiogenesis process a function of a double sword. On one hand, the process provides an ideal condition for the treatment of diseases and wound healing. On the other hand, it promotes invasive and overgrowth tumors.

Dr. Papetti M continued, "tumor cells induce the formation of new blood supply from the preexisting vasculature, and this affords tumor cells the ability to survive and propagate in a hostile environment"

Collectively,  " both normal and tumor-induced neovascularization fulfill the essential role of satisfying the metabolic demands of tissue".

Therefore, by inhibiting the process of blood vessel formation of the tumor, cancer may be curable.

Dr. Dai X, the lead researchers in the study of "Suppression of murine B-cell lymphoma growth by trichosanthin through anti-angiogenesis" showed, "trichosanthin TCS, ( an immunosuppressive and anti-tumor protein) inhibits murine B-cell lymphoma growth by anti-angiogenesis was reported. First, TCS inhibits tumor growth and prolonged survival significantly in vivo, and TCS depressed the formation of new blood vessels around the tumor in a dose-dependent manner".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the Trivalent arsenic [As(III)] induced damaging effects on human health such as angiogenesis.

Epidemiologically, Trivalent arsenic [As(III)] has been found to induce the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, and angiogenesis.

According to tested analysis, administration of curcumin, an active ingredient in the dietary turmeric has shown to demonstrate potent antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the angiogenic activity.

In HCT-116 human colon cancer cells exposed to As(III), both curcumin and turmeric inhibit the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor associated with the promotion of the growth of new blood vessels from the existing blood vessels.

In the chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay model, curcumin or turmeric.also inhibited the extensive increase in blood vessel density.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " the findings reported here strongly suggest that turmeric and curcumin can dramatically attenuate the process of angiogenesis induced by low As(III) concentrations".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer-associated with angiogenesis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Bean, the Anti-Platelet Aggregation Natural and Healthy Veggie

By Kyle J. Norton

Platelet aggregation refers to the platelet-to-platelet adhesion in the blood that forms a clot.

Platelet aggregation plays a critical role in the protection of the body against blood loss due to injury or tissue damage.

However, activated platelets that stimulate blood clot formation have also been found to induce atherothrombotic disease.

Antiplatelet aggregation medicines, also known as a platelet agglutination inhibitor are the types of medicine that process blood thinning property.

In other words, antiplatelet aggregation medicines reduce the risk of blood clotting used in patients who have a high risk of cardiovascular disease such as aspirin.

Coagulation disorders or bleeding disorders are medical conditions that affect blood clotting activities. Most common diseases associated with coagulation disorders are Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease, clotting factor deficiencies, hypercoagulable states, and deep venous thrombosis.

Most common causes of the bleeding disorder are found in patients with a lower red blood cell count
and vitamin K deficiency.

However, long-term use of certain medication have also been found to side effects of bleeding disorder.

Most common symptoms of blessing disorder are unexplained and easy bruising, heavy menstrual bleeding in women, frequent nose bleeding, excessive bleeding from small cuts or an injury
and bleeding into joints.

Dr. Copplestone JA in investigating the bleeding and coagulation disorders in the elderly wrote, "Ageing does not bring with it any major changes in the coagulation or fibrinolytic proteins or platelets. It does bring a greater burden of disease, with fewer reserves, and so when hemorrhage occurs in the elderly it has more serious consequences".

And, " Drugs are a significant and potentially preventable cause of bleeding in the elderly. The most frequent problems arise with anticoagulants. The risk of interactions increases with the number of other medications which are prescribed".

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding the natural compound which processes anti-thrombosis, researchers examined the antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and fibrinolytic activity in vitro of extracts from selected fruits and vegetables.

The study comapred the effect of extracts prepared from each sample included an aqueous (juice or pressed solubles) and/or methanol-soluble fraction.at a final concentration of 1 mg/ml from samples of 19 fruits and 26 vegetables, including green beans representative of the local diet.

Extracts of green beans showed an inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP and arachidonic acid, in a concentration-dependent manner, comapred to other extracts.

Comapred to methanolic extracts of grapes prolonged the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and diluted prothrombin time (dPT) and raspberry prolonged the APTT are higher compared to those of green bean.

Taken altogether, green beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of platelet aggregation, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Betaxanthins Inhibits Lipid Peroxidation Against Atherosclerosis Developing

By Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.

Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium and other chemical substances in the artery

Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will lead to stroke, causing the death of the neurons.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

Most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Some researchers suggested that atherosclerosis is a lipoprotein-driven disease. Therefore, people with high blood cholesterol are at an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Overuse of calcium supplements is also found to elevated the condition risk, particularly in the elderly.

Other risk factors that have bee found epidemiologically by studies are high blood pressure, triglycerides, smoking, insulin resistance, obesity or diabetes and inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, lupus or infections.

Most cases of atherosclerosis can be reversed by making a change of lifestyle and moderate exercise.

Dr. Singh RB, the lead scientist wrote, "Adherence to diet and exercise was obtained through questionnaires and information obtained was quantified into a formula"

And, " After 24 weeks, the overall score of diet and exercises were significantly higher in group A(intervention diet( than in group B(control). There was a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol (13.3%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (16.9%), triglycerides (19.2%), fasting blood glucose (19.5%) and blood pressures (11.5/6.2 mm Hg) in the intervention group compared with initial levels and changes in group B".

Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of heart disease, researchers examined the effects of indicaxanthin, a chemical constituent of betaxanthins anti-inflammatory activity, against oxLDL-induced endothelial dysfunction.

In human umbilical vein cord cells (HUVEC) induced oxLDL, indicaxanthin pretreatment at a range between 5 and 20 μM, consistent with its plasma level after a fruit meal (7 μM), significantly and concentration-dependently inhibited oxLDL-induced cytotoxicity.

Furthermore, intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) -1, endothelial-leukocyte adhesion molecule 1 (ELAM-1), and (member 1 of human transporter sub-family ABCA associated with early stage of atherosclerosis were improved by the indicaxanthin pretreatment.

Moreover, indicaxanthin also exerted a significantly redox-dependent by inhibiting the protein involved in pro-inflammatory proteins.

Collectively, researchers said, " In conclusion, here we demonstrate indicaxanthin as a novel, dietary phytochemicals, able to exert significant protective vascular effects in vitro, at nutritionally relevant concentrations".

Taken altogether, betaxanthins processed a high amount of indicaxanthin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene, the Natural Prevention of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.

Lung diseases are a group of medical conditions that cause the reduced function of the lung inhaling oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pulmonary diseases are a class of disease associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

Obstructive lung diseases are the condition in which the lungs are unable to expel air properly during exhalation. Diseases associated with obstruction lung diseases care asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and emphysema.

Most cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are found in smokers. Dr. Rafael Laniado-Laborín said, "One hundred million deaths were caused by tobacco in the 20th century, and it is estimated that there will be up to one billion deaths attributed to tobacco use in the 21st century.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is rapidly becoming a global public health crisis with smoking being recognized as its most important causative factor".

And, "There is mounting evidence that the rate of progression of COPD can be reduced when patients at risk of developing the disease stop smoking, while lifelong smokers have a 50% probability of developing COPD during their lifetime".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease, researchers examined lycopene effects on COPD on a nonrodent model.

The study included ferrets (4 groups, n = 12-16/group) exposed to a combination of tobacco carcinogen (NNK) and CS with or without consuming lycopene at low and high doses (equivalent to ∼30 and ∼90 mg lycopene/day in human, respectively) for 22 weeks.

According to tested analysis, lycopene at a high dose significantly inhibited NNK/CS-induced chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and preneoplastic lesions in the induction of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by decreasing the lung grow abnormally.

Furthermore, lycopene also significantly inhibited NNK/CS-induced accumulation of total cholesterol and increased mRNA expression of critical genes related to the reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) ) in the lungs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The present study has provided the first evidence linking a protective role of dietary lycopene against COPD and preneoplastic lesions to RCT-mediated cholesterol accumulation in lungs".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered an anti-COPD remedy for the prevention and treatment of UC, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Collard Green Improves the Liver Fatty Acid Profiles Against the Onset of Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

An increase in the biosynthesis of fatty acids is associated with the onset of Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL).
A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is the early stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver, other than excessive use of alcohol.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition is developed into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars and reduced the performance of the liver.

In other words, if more than 5% – 10% percent of your liver’s weight is fat, you have a fatty liver (steatosis).

According to the statistics, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of liver disease affecting 100 million people in the US. Out of that number, approximately 20% of people have NASH.

Medical conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes are some of the metabolic risk factors that have been found to induce the development of NASH.

As of today, there is no effective treatment of NASH. Depending on the condition people with overweight or obese are recommended to lose weight. The aim of medical treatment is to reduce the symptoms and delay the progression of the condition and improve the quality of life.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

On findings a potential compound for the modulation of liver fatty acid, researchers examined the effects of diets containing 4% collard greens, purslane or sweet potato greens on the liver fatty acid profiles of four-week-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) for 4 weeks.

Based on the tested assays, SHRs received the control diet had greater percentages of liver saturated fatty acid and less omega-3 fatty acid percentages

Moreover, the SHRs that consume the control diet also had significantly greater percentages of oleic; significantly less γ-linolenic and docosahexaenoic acids.

However, SHRs that received the diets containing vegetables had significantly greater liver concentrations of γ- linolenic, docosahexaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, as well as lower levels of lauric, palmitic and arachidonic acids.

In other words,  4% collard greens, purslane or sweet potato greens showed a strong effect in reducing the risk of fatty liver in hypertensive rats (SHRs)  after 4 weeks of consumption by improving the liver profile parameters.

Taken altogether, collard green may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver disease associated with the expression of liver fatty acid, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara), the Liver-protective Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal and only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself.

The liver is the first line of detoxing defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing them to other organs and tissues in the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the healthy function of the liver against any harmful toxins.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.

There are no exact causes of liver disease. Viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, inclduing cancer.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound which processes a liver protective effect, researchers examined the highly active photocomposition (PC-1) containing oregano (Origanum vulgare), wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum) and coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) aerial parts, valerian (Valeriana officinalis) leaves and little-leaf linden (Tilia cordata) flowers and PC-1 extract exhibited the strongest anti-lipid peroxidation (LPO)O and antihemolytic effects.

According to the tested results, PC-1 extract activated the Nrf2/antioxidant response is more effective comapred to the extracts of other photocomposition.

Furthermore, oral administration of PC-1 extract (100-200 mg/kg) markedly protected the rat liver injury acutely or chronically against intoxicated by carbon tetrachloride.

The liver protective activity of PC-1 was attributed to the activation of the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host and the improvement of liver histology, blood chemistry parameters.

Moreover, the osmotic fragility test (OFT) also addressed that PC-1 extract inhibited the destruction of red blood cells in carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these data support the strategy of in-vitro plant selection for developing efficacious tissue-protective photocomposition".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a liver protective remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Protects the Heart Against Cardiac Hypertrophy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is a medical condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle, leading to reduced function of the heart in pumping blood throughout the body.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels of the body to provide oxygen and nutrients and removal of metabolic wastes.
The heart muscles made up the bulk of the heart’s mass control the heartbeat with high contractile strength and endurance.

Cardiac muscle also has a unique function to regulate heart performance by spreading electrochemical signals to all cells in the heart.

Damage of heart muscle has been found to induce blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias).

In some cases, heart muscle disease also is found in patients with congenital heart defects.

Most common symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy are breathlessness with exertion or at rest, legs, ankles, and feet swelling. persistent fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting, particularly, in the symptoms of irregular heartbeats.

Conventionally, treatments of cardiac hypertrophy are totally depending on the types of heart disease, including lowering blood pressure medication such as ACE inhibitors; lowing the heart rate, such as beta-blockers, normalizing heart beating and balancing electrolytes in the body.

Making a healthy lifestyle change and moderate exercise may also recommend by your doctor.

Cardiac hypertrophy has been found in patients with uncontrol high blood pressure accompanied by tobacco smoking. The condition is a common risk factor of heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Thomas Kahan, the lead scientist wrote, "Myocardial hypertrophy is also part of the remodeling process following an acute myocardial infarction, and is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure caused by systolic and/or diastolic LV dysfunction".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of heart failure, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin an anti-hypertrophic potential.

According to the tested analysis, curcumin encapsulated by carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) nanoparticle conjugated to a myocyte specific homing peptide was effective in the regression of cardiac hypertrophy in a rat (Rattus norvegicus) model.

Curcumin at a low dose of 5 mg/kg body weight compared to free Curcumin at 35 mg/kg body weight. showed a higher cardiac bioavailability, comapred to other concentration.

Furthermore, cardiac function during hypertrophy was significantly improved by the application of Curcumin/CMC-peptide by inhibiting the hypertrophy marker genes (ANF, β-MHC) and apoptotic mediators (Bax, Cytochrome-c) and activity of apoptotic markers (Caspase 3 and PARP) in the lower doses comapred to higher doses.

Targeted Curcumin treatment significantly lowered p53 expression which is associated with pro-apoptotic function in cardiac hypertrophy.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Curcumin and also attributes towards probable mechanistic insight into its therapeutic potential as a cardio-protective agent for regression of cardiac hypertrophy".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
