Bilberry Protects the Arteries Against the Risk of Atherosclerosis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis, one of the major cause of the cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing the arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduce oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.

Arteries are blood vessels carried the oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing them to the tissues and organs.

Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact to induce plaque accumulation.

People at the early stage of atherosclerosis are asymptomatic. However, over time, the continued buildup of plaque on the arterial wall can cause symptoms of chest pain or angina shortness of breath. fatigue. confusion, due to a blockage or reduce blood flow.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of atherosclerosis, an unhealthy lifestyle, particularly in people who follow the pattern of the Western diet has been found in many patients with the disease.

Dr. Matthias Nahrendorf, the lead scientist wrote, "Diet, exercise, stress, and sleep are receiving attention as environmental modifiers of chronic inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, the culprit condition of myocardial infarction and stroke".

And, "Accumulating data indicate that psychosocial stress and a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravate the cardiovascular disease, whereas regular physical activity and healthy sleeping habits help prevent it".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis researchers evaluated a nutritional supplementation with a bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract (BE) in the atherosclerotic lesion development in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE⁻/⁻) mice.

On the early stage of atherosclerosis development in tested mice, BE significantly improved hypercholesterolemia associated with plaques built-up without affecting the plasmatic antioxidant status.

According to the nutrigenomic analysis, BE modulated the expression of the gene involved in different cellular processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, transendothelial migration, and angiogenesis, that lead to atherosclerosis development/protection.

In other words, BE enhanced the mechanisms involved in the preventive action of bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract against atherosclerosis.

On the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)). Apo E(-/-) mice, researchers compared the efficacy of two bilberry extracts, one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).

According to the 16 weeks a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE, both bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting the levels of oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.

These results strongly suggested that bilberry extract inhibited plaque development through other unknown mechanisms.

By comparative tests, fermentation generates new bioactive compounds FBE are more effective in attenuating progression of the atherosclerotic lesions compared to those of BE.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Tomato Protects the Obese Against Obesity-Related Co-Morbidities

By Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a disease characterized by excess body fat has accumulated over time.  A BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height, a BMI that is between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects nearly every system of the human body, leading to increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity continues to climb at an alarming rate, that leads to significant burdens to the country economy and health care system.

Currently, there is not an effective treatment of the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combat the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity, particularly in the economy that may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Bariatric surgery has been proposed to patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced a serious weight-related health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure accompanied by the commitment of lifestyle changes. However, this type of surgery has posted a serious risk of many patients if the commitment of making lifelong changes in the eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of obesity. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity in the US may be correlated to the promotion high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr, Golay A, the lead scientist at the Geneva University Hospital, wrote, "Epidemiological evidence suggests that a high-fat diet promotes the development of obesity and that there is a direct relationship between the amount of dietary fat and the degree of obesity".

And, "Dietary fat induces overconsumption and weight gain through its low satiety properties and high caloric density. Obese and post-obese subjects do not appear to adapt to dietary fat, and therefore fat storage is increased".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of obesity complication, researchers investigated the effect of the potent tomato-derived antioxidant and oxidative status, and inflammatory markers in obese.

The study included the comparison of 8 obese patients (body mass index 37.5 +/- 2.5 kg/m2) with a control group of eight lean, age and gender-matched subjects (BMI 21.6 +/- 0.6 kg/m2), before and after 4 weeks of lycopene supplementation (tomato-derived Lyc-O-Mato) (30 mg daily).

Before treatment, according to the tested results, compared to control, obese subjects showed significantly reduced levels of plasma carotenoids, increased levels of CRP and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine and oxidative stress.

Additional analysis of the findings, BMI was correlated with increased expression of CRP, proinflammation (IL-6) and oxidative stress.

The presence of high levels IL-6 and oxidative stress also found to correlate inversely with carotenoids (P < 0.05).

In other words, obese induced increased levels of CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress were attributed probably by the depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

After treatment, lycopene a significant elevation of plasma carotenoids (1.79 vs. 0.54 microg/ml) and plasma of lycopene (1.15 vs 0.23 microg/ml) in the subjects compared to the placebo group.

The results suggested that injection of lycopene improved the levels of antioxidants enzymes in the obese, thus preventing the occurrence of diseases associated with CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress without affecting the markers of inflammation and oxidation products.

Based on the results, researchers concluded, "Obese patients showed abnormally higher markers of inflammation and oxidation products and lower plasma carotenoids".

And, "The lack of reduction of pro-inflammatory markers could be attributed to the short period of the study and the small number of participants".

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed a high amount of lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention of obesity-related co-morbidities, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Reduced Metabolic Risk Factors Against Heart Disease, Stroke, and Diabetes in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Metabolic risk factors are the cluster conditions are associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

In other words, if you have 3 or more risk factors of too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol, you are considered at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes compared to those who have less.

There is no single cause of metabolic syndrome. However, most cases of MetS are found in overweight and obese patients, particularly in those with insulin resistance, the condition caused by the inability of the body to use insulin properly in converting sugar to energy.

Symptoms are depending on the risk factors which the patients have, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol and glucose.

Other than the aforementioned risk factors, epidemiologically, aging, family history, physical inactivity and women with polycystic ovary syndrome are at a higher risk of the condition onset.

Some researchers suggested the rise of metabolic syndrome in the US over the past few decades may be correlated with the promotion of a high-fat diet in the Western world.

Dr. Wabitsch, M., the lead scientist wrote, "Specific alterations of the Western Diet uniquely drive this process and are unrelated to calories. These alterations include too little fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients, and too many omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fats, branched-chain amino acids, ethanol, and fructose. The food industry invokes personal responsibility while denying any corporate responsibility and citing scientific, policy, and social arguments. However, their responses obfuscate the scientific truth in order to obviate their culpability".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of metabolic risk in diabetics, researchers investigated the effects of alliin (S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide) is a bioactive sulfoxide compound derived from garlic against metabolic risk factors in a diet-induced animal model.

The selected diet-induced obese C57BL/6J DIO mice were treated by drinking water with or without alliin (0.1 mg/ml) for 8 weeks.

According to the tested assays, alliin showed no significant effect on the body weight, adiposity or energy balance, however, alliin significantly reduced the levels of glucose homeostasis, increased insulin sensitivity and the lipid profile associated with metabolic risk factors.

The efficacy of alliin against the onset of hyperglycemia in obese tested mice was attributed at least in part by balancing the levels of gut microbiota.

In other words, alliin modulated of the intestinal microbiota composition by decreasing levels of Lachnospiraceae and increasing levels of Ruminococcaceae.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "alliin has nutraceutical or even medicinal potential in the prevention of diabetes and lipid metabolic disorders(in the induction of hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia)".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about alliin antimetabolic activity, researchers compared the therapeutic effects of alliin extracted from garlic leaves of plants grown under ex-situ and in situ conditions.

According to the results of bioanalysis on normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats in five weeks experiment
* Alliin produced from in situ grown-plants showed a significant reduction of the serum glucose, triglycerides, total lipids, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-, and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-cholesterol in diabetic rats of 54%, 15%, 14%, 20%, 24%,and 15%  repetitively.

* Alliin produced from ex-situ grown-plants showed lesser effect in the reduction of  35%, 14%, 10%, 12%, 17%, and 11%, respectively

* Both were compared to those treated with distilled water.

* Additionally, alliin produced from in and ex-situ grown-plants showed no effect on high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol.

Based on the findings, Dr. Nasim SA, the lead scientist wrote, "These findings demonstrate leaf extract obtained from plants grown under in situ conditions possess higher therapeutic efficiency in comparison with leaf extract obtained from plants grown under ex situ condition".

In other words, alliin produced from original grown-plants is more effective compared to alliin produced by ex-situ.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for reducing metabolic risk with no side effect, responding to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Lycopene Exhibits Anti Cancer Angiogenesis

By Kyle J. Norton

Angiogenesis is a process involved in the migration, growth, and differentiation of endothelial cells, that stimulates the growth of new blood vessel from the existing vessel.

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with abnormal cell growth due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue. At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor can press on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessel, leading to bleeding and localized pain and symptoms accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unintended weight loss.

Localized symptoms are totally depending on the types of cancer.

At this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other healthy cells and tissue, causing a secondary metastasis.

Under normal conditions, angiogenesis is necessary for wound healing, tissues repairment in which the developing or healing tissues receive an adequate supply of nutrients.

In Cancer, angiogenesis induced the formation of new blood supply from the preexisting vasculature by false signaling in ensuring the tumor survive and propagate.

In other words, if we can cut off the energy supply to cancer which totally relyed to the formation of the new blood vessel for proliferation and expansion, we may cure those types of cancer.

Dr. Benouchan M, the lead scientist wrote, " tumor angiogenesis plays an important role in tumor development, vascular invasion, and hematogenous metastasis. Thus, anti-angiogenic therapy directed against tumor ECs should, in principle, improve the efficacy of antitumor therapy by inducing little or no drug resistance".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potent compound which processes anti-angiogenetic activity against cancer proliferation and invasion, researchers examined the apo-10'-lycopenoic acid (ALA), a derivative of lycopene on liver and lung cancer animal models.

In both Transwell and wound-healing models, application ALA in a dose-dependent manner was effective in inhibiting migration and invasion of liver and lung cancer cells.

Furthermore, ALA treatment suppressed the actin remodeling in orchestrating cancer cell motility and cancer cell membrane formation.

Moreover, the ALA also constrain the cancer proliferation, invasion by suppressing angiogenesis.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "ALA inhibits cancer cell motility and angiogenesis".

Dr. Zu K, the lead scientist in a joint study examined the effect of lycopene on tissue biomarkers in prostate cancers by analyzing the information obtained through questionnaires and ascertained total and lethal prostate cancer cases from 1986 through January 31, 2010, among 49898 male health professionals found that
* Higher lycopene intake was inversely associated with total prostate cancer and more strongly with lethal prostate cancer.

* Higher lycopene intake was associated with biomarkers in cancer indicative of less angiogenic potential.

In other words, higher lycopene intake reduced cancer proliferation by stimulating the formation of the new blood vessel.

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered anti-angiogenetic supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer through its anti-angiogenetic activity, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Suppresses Oxidative Stress in the Initiation of Chronic Illness

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress with no side effects, according to studies.

Oxidative stress in a condition caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In other words, the condition of oxidative stress occurs only under imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

Antioxidants can be either produced by the body or injected to the body from the outside sources such as consumptions of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.

Free radicals are everywhere, including the air we breathe, the food we eat and the body daily functioning such as cell metabolism.

In other words, any chemical compound which has an oxygen molecule can become free radical after entering our body.

Most healthy individuals can produce enough amounts of antioxidant endogenously to counter the bombards of free radicals. However, for people with a weakened immune system such as elderly and immature immune system such as baby may need the injection of antioxidants from the outside sources.

More precisely, people with a weakened immune system do not produce enough antioxidant enzymes to inhibit the chain reaction of free radicals which occurs daily in the body due to the unstable nature of the molecules.

Believe it or not, our body needs limit levels of some free radicals to function better, including lower blood pressure, relax blood vessels to move blood, such as nitric oxide NO.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite, 3, 3'- diindolylmethane (DIM) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

The study included selected genetically modified mouse (C57BL/6J mice) similar to that of metabolic abnormalities of the human disease after the administration of a high-fat diet (HFD).

Including indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite, 3, 3'- diindolylmethane (DIM) into the diet showed a positively modulated the glucose, insulin, and Hb and HbA1c levels in HFD mice against the risk of diabetes complications.

Compared to the HFD group, injection of I3C and DIM protected the infected rat against the formation lipid peroxidation observed by levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), conjugated dienes (CD).

Furthermore, levels of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were also increased, an indication of the balance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals.

Interestingly, I3C and DIM also improved the free radical scavengers such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and improved the reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in treated mice.

Based on the findings, researchers summarized, "From the study, it was clear that the antioxidant-scavenging action was accelerated in mice treated with DIM than the I3C treatment group which was comparable with the standard drug metformin".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betacyanins Protects the Liver Against Injury in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ not only plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body but also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical condition characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver injury.

Most common symptoms of liver injury are totally depending on the severity of the injury that affects the liver function. In serious cases of liver injury, symptoms may include jaundice, pain in your upper right abdomen, abdominal swelling, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, disorientation or confusion and sleepiness.

Most common causes of liver injury include
* Overdose of certain medication, especially acetaminophen overdose. Believer, it or not, taking too much acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the US.

* Overdose of some prescription medications, including antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and anticonvulsants is also associated with liver injury.

* Overdose of herbal extracts such as green tea ECG

* Toxins
Exposure to toxic chemicals such as refrigerants and solvents for waxes and eating toxic food such as wild mushroom may cause liver injury.

Out of many risk factors involved in liver injury, some researchers suggested alcohol intoxication, a condition of alcohol poisoning caused by excessively high levels of  the recent drinking of ethanol in the blood (alcohol) may be one of the major culprits that cause the long-term injury to the liver.

Over time, excessive alcohol drinking can lead to fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.

The Canadian Liver Association wrote, "When the liver has too much alcohol to handle, normal liver function may be interrupted leading to a chemical imbalance. If the liver is required to detoxify alcohol continuously, liver cells may be destroyed or altered resulting in fat deposits (fatty liver), and more seriously, either inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis), and/or permanent scarring (cirrhosis).

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the protective effect of betanin, a chemical compound found in the class of betacyanins on the liver.

In fish pretreated with 1, 2, and 4 % betanin in fodder throughout the experiment for 20 days before intraperitoneally injected with 20 % (v/v in peanut oil) CCl4 at a volume of 0.5 mL/kg body weight, researchers showed that
* Injection of CCl4 induced liver injury by promoting the expression of liver CYP2E1 which has been found to increased in patient with liver disease, and oxidative stress.

* Elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities and liver histological damage in CCl4 fish were also decreased in the treatment group.

More precisely, compared with the CCl4 control group, the betanin-treated groups exhibited reduced CYP2E1 activity, decreased malondialdehyde level, increased liver antioxidative capacity (increased glutathione level and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities).

In other words, all parameters associated with liver injury in the CCl4 group are inhibited by the administration of betanin.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " In conclusion, betanin attenuates CCl4-induced liver damage in common carp. Moreover, the inhibition of CYP2E1 activity and oxidative stress may have significant roles in the protective effect of betanin".

Taken altogether, betacyanins processed abundantly bioactive compound betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion Inhibits the Initiation and Progression of Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Digestive cancer is a group of medical conditions associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue on the gastrointestinal tract.

Most cases of gastrointestinal cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining in a specific organ, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a solid tumor through proliferation.

Most common cancers of the gastrointestinal tract are
*Esophagus
The esophagus or gullet is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth in the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells in the lower part of the esophagus that connected with the stomach.

Esophageal cancer starts from the lining of the esophagus, then later penetrate in the wall of the esophagus and spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach and the chest.

* Gallbladder cancer
The gallbladder is a small organ under the liver with a function that aids the digestive system in fat metabolism with storing bile produced by the liver.

Gallbladder cancer arises from the cells of the tissue of the gallbladder. It is common cancer in central and South America, central and eastern Europe, Japan and northern India, but rare in North America.

*Liver cancer
The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above the stomach.

Liver cancer is a condition caused by the uncontrolled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver. Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most cases of liver cancer are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

*Pancreas cancer
The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen.

By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Cancer of pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition associated with irregular cell growth in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices with cancer of an epithelium that originates in glandular tissue which accounts for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.

*Stomach cancer
Stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.

Stomach cancer is a condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

* Bowel cancer
Human Bowl is divided into 2 parts,  the small bowel, is associated with the digestion and absorption of food.  large bowel including the colon and rectum that involve absorption of water from the small bowel contents and break down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Bowel cancer is a condition caused by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix.

Bowel cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

Bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Besides some of the symptoms associated with specific types of cancer, most gastrointestinal cancers shared the general symptoms of unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cancer in the digestive system, researchers examined the relationship between total allium, garlic, and onion intake on the risk of cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT).

According to the results of data of published observational studies (21 case-control and four cohort studies), using a meta-analytic approach and random effects models, onion exerted the relative risk of 0.72 compared to 0.79 for total allium, 0.74 for garlic for the highest versus the lowest consumption.

Total allium including onion consumption showed an inverse relation apparently stronger in case-control studies.

These results suggested that onion has a moderate inverse association with the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the UADT.

Additionally, according to the University Laboratories of Medical Research (LURM) in the examination of the effects of dietary components on cancer of the digestive system, onion contains active components that can influence the initiation and progression of cancer.

Furthermore, these chemical compounds have also been found to inhibit cell proliferation and metastasis, induce apoptosis.

More precisely, onion protected the integrity and viability of the cells in the digestive system through it's antioxidant, cytotoxic, and pro-apoptotic properties.

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer of the digestive system, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
