Herbal Artichoke Inhibits the Incidence of Metabolic Syndrome

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, according to studies.

Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes, including excess body fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

Individuals are considered to have metabolic syndrome if they process 3 or more of the aforementioned conditions.

Being overweight or obesity, lack of physical activity and Insulin resistance are some of the risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the major factors that cause widespread metabolic syndrome in the Western world.

Dr. Silvia Moreno-Fernández, the lead scientist in the cross-sectional study of diet pattern in risk of metabolic syndrome wrote, " At the end of the study, HFG animals showed lower expression of energy expenditure genes when compared to the other DIO groups. Oxidative stress biomarkers such as MDA and mitochondrial RT-qPCR analyses showed an increase of oxidative damage together with mitochondrial dysfunction in HFG group".

And, "This group also showed increased insulin and glucose plasma levels, though HFF animals showed the greatest increase on these parameters. All DIO groups showed increased plasma levels of triglycerides".

The finding strongly suggested the correlation between the Western diet and metabolic syndrome risk.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers examined the Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) anti-metabolic syndrome activity through its antioxidant activity.

The double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial included 80 patients with MetS randomly allocated to either "ALE group" (received 1800 mg ALE as four tablets per day) or "Placebo group" (received placebo containing cornstarch, lactose, and avicel as four tablets per day) for 12 weeks.

According to the results of 68 patients completed the experiment, dietary intakes of energy, macronutrients, and micronutrients were not significantly different between the two groups throughout the trial, with the exception of zinc.

However, the concentration of oxidative of low-density lipoprotein is decreased significantly in ALE group, compared to placebo without affecting the oxidative stress marker and antioxidant enzymes.

The finding strongly suggested that Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) only reversed one of the conditions of the cluster in metabolic syndrome, namely, hyperlipidemia.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information of artichoke anti-metabolic syndrome effects, researchers evaluated the activity of Boldocynara®, a proprietary dietary supplement product consisting of the plants Cynara scolymus, Silybum marianum, Taraxacum officinale, and Peumus boldus.

Peumus boldus extract exhibited pronounced inhibitory activities on α-glucosidase (80% inhibition at 100 µg/ml, IC50: 17.56 µg/ml) involved the breaking down of carbohydrates.


Artichoke alone displayed a moderate inhibitory activity of 31% at 100 µg/ml.

According to the tested enzymes, the combination had moderate to weak effects against the expression of the metabolic syndrome.

The results indicated a moderate potential of the dietary supplement Boldocynara® and artichoke for the treatment of metabolic disorders.

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may have a potential effect against the onset of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tomatoes, The Vegetables Which Normalize the Blood Pressure in Hypertensive Patients

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, according to studies.

Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is a measurement of a force against the walls of blood vessels that the heart pumps blood around the body.

Chronic and untreated high blood pressure has been associated epidemiologically with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, there are over 103 million Americans living with high blood pressure.

In other words, nearly half of all adults in the US have hypertension.

According to the new definition in the measurement of blood pressure, the percentage of U.S. adults with high blood pressure jumped from 32 percent under the old definition to nearly 46 percent.

Most people with mild hypertension can control the blood pressure by a change of lifestyles such as a change to diet and exercise.

There are many prevalent factors associated with the onset of hypertension, including age, ethnicity and gender, diet, physical inactivity, exercise, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested widespread hypertension in the obese subjects may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Lia Taylor, the lead scientist wrote, "Diets high in fat and cholesterol have been linked to weight gain and hypertension, and T cell activation has been suggested to mediate these diet-induced changes in male animal models".

And, "a 4wk-HF diet increased BP and decreased renal anti-inflammatory T cells in female DSS rats. The loss of renal anti-inflammatory T cells is expected to lead to a more pro-inflammatory immune cell profile that may sensitize female DSS rats to HF-diet induced increases in BP".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomatoes are cultivated worldwide for commercial purpose and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of hypertension with no side effects, researchers assessed whether the addition of standardized tomato extract (STE) or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to standard antihypertensive therapy can improve BP control in patients with arterial hypertension (HT).

The study included 82 high-risk hypertensive patients with primary HT at high to a very high total CV risk were randomized in a blinded fashion to one of two groups, i.e. the ASA and STE group.

STE treated group showed a statistically significant reduction in 24-h systolic BP, diastolic BP, and mean arterial pressure values measured in ABPM after four weeks compared to ASA treated group.

Furthermore, after four weeks of treatment, the STE group exhibited a statistically significant reduction in pulse pressure (PP) during the daytime and during 24 h.

Moreover, STE treatment in obese patients also significantly decreased the day PP.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The results of this study show that the addition of STE to standard antihypertensive therapy improves BP control in hypertensive patients with high CV risk. This effect, together with the anti-aggregatory effect, may indicate the pleiotropic effect of tomato extract."

Additonally, in the study of 65 patients with arterial hypertension and high cardiovascular risk. researchers compared the influence of adding acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) or standardized tomato extract (STE) to standard hypotensive therapy on the values of arterial pressure and the daily blood pressure profiles of patients with hypertension and high cardiovascular risk.

All patients evaluated with high-risk of primary hypertension were randomly allocated in a blinded fashion to one of two groups (ASA or STE).

Similar to the aforementioned study, the blood pressure values during the day, during the night, and in 24-h BP profiles obtained with ABPM were significantly lower in the STE group in compared to the ASA group, after 4 weeks of treatment.

The addition of STE to standard hypotensive treatment resulted in a favorable increase in the nocturnal fall of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (by 6.5%) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) (by 3.3%).

In other words, tomato normalized the blood pressure against the risk of CVD regardless of the levels of blood pressure.

Dr. Osińska AN, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "The use of STE is significant in HT patients with high total cardiovascular risk; it is associated with better BP control and improvements in the daily BP profile.".

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that play an essential role in the improvement of digestive functioning.

In other words, probiotics balanced the ratio of the gut microbiota by improving the levels of healthy organisms in the gut, particularly in people who are taking antibiotics, leading to the optimization of the digestive system in the absorption nutrients for the body needs such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function.

Where gut microbiota is the complex community of microorganisms that live in our gastrointestinal tracts.

Dr. Shukla R, the lead scientist said, " These results indicate both probiotic property and the glucansucrase-producing ability of P. pentosaceus CRAG3".

In vitro, in the evaluation of the probiotic potentials of three Bacillus strains 437F, 1630F and 1020G obtained from the traditional pickle researchers found that
* All strains only showed high acid, bile tolerance but also exhibited antagonistic activity against various pathogens. 

* All strains exhibited antioxidant activity, auto- and co-aggregation ability and surface hydrophobicity and attachment capacity against the Caco-2 cells were similar to those of well-known probiotic strains.

* All strains are safe without causing harm to healthy colon cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "With respect to their characteristics and safety aspect, these Bacillus species may have potential to consider as probiotics for animal and/or human applications".

Herbal Artichoke, The Anti Hypertriglyceridemic Functional Remedy, According to Studies

Artichoke may be the next generation of whole food or remedy for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia with no side effects, according to studies.

Hypertriglyceridemia is a condition characterized by high levels of triglycerides in the blood.

Triglycerides are accumulated in the blood for future use by converting any unused calories. Overexpression of hyperglyceridemia is found to patients with atherosclerosis even without the presence of high cholesterol levels, and predispose.

In other words, hypertriglyceridemia can also be accumulated to the arterial wall or combined with other substances to form plaque that narrows the arteries in transporting rich oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

There are 2 main sources of plasma triglycerides
* Dietary fat which is carried in chylomicrons.

* Fat is produced by the liver carried in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles.

Primary hypertriglyceridemia is found in 5% of patients associated with genetic preposition compared to 95% of secondary hypertriglyceridemia found in obese metabolic syndrome, diabetes,... patients.

Treating hypertriglyceridemia is difficult, as the condition is frequent coexistence with other conditions that affect cardiovascular disease risks, such as high levels of low-density lipoprotein, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. 

In severe cases of hypertriglyceridemia, patients may also experience the complication of acute pancreatitis, independent to the risk of CVD.

In the concern of the overexpression of hypertriglyceridemia in risk of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the potentially favorable effects of artichoke leaf extract (ALE) on anthropometric (the size, shape, and composition of the human body) and metabolic indices affected by fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO)-rs9939609 polymorphism.

The double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial, included 52 patients with hypertriglyceridemia randomly allocated to receive ALE (1800 mg/day as four tablets) or matching placebo (consisting of corn starch, lactose, and avicel) for 12 weeks.

Interestingly, in 48 patients completed the trial (intervention, n = 24, placebo = 24), ALE and placebo groups were similar in the baseline characteristics.

However, the ALE treatment group showed a strong interaction between FTO-rs9939609 polymorphism and the levels of TC, LDL-C, and TG.

These results suggested that ALE modulated the TG level in A allele carriers compared to subjects with TT genotype, compared to those without.

Based on the findings, scientists wrote in the final report, "No significant effect of ALE supplementation was shown on anthropometric and biochemical indices in Iranian hypertriglyceridemic patients. However, rs9939609 variant of FTO gene seems to affect lipid profile response to ALE supplementation".

In order to reveal more information about artichoke antihypertriglyceridemic activity, researchers investigated the anti-dyslipidemic properties of the combination of the artichoke leaves extract, turmeric extract, prickly pear dried leaves (PPL) and garlic extract versus each one alone in two different hyperlipidemic animal models.

The study included a two-week treatment of each of the natural extracts, combination 1 (artichoke, turmeric, and PPL) or combination 2 (artichoke, turmeric, PPL and garlic) prior to a single intraperitoneal injection of Pluronic F-127.

Single intraperitoneal injection of Pluronic F-127 showed a significant increase in levels of serum LDL before treatments.

In a 10-day high fat diet model, only the combination 1 and 2 lowered serum cholesterol, LDL by 8–12%, decreased significantly triglycerides, LDL/HDL ratio; and increased significantly HDL.

Additionally, in the long-term treatment of each natural product for 7 weeks observation, researchers found that only artichoke and PPL inhibited significantly the activity of HMG-CoA reductase, the metabolic pathway associated with the production of cholesterol.

The finding strongly suggested that the combination of artichoke, turmeric, PPL and garlic extract prevents dyslipidemia with a short and long-term use.

Taken altogether, artichoke use alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypertriglyceridemia, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Scientists may have found a whole fruit for speeding up the healing of burns, according to studies.

Burn is skin and skin tissue damage due to heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, friction, or radiation. The condition is the most prevalent injury in the household, particularly in children.

Most cases of skin burn are healed within a few days or weeks, depending on the degree and size of the burns.

Depending on the severity, complications of deep or widespread burns may include bacterial infection (in some cases can lead to sepsis), hypovolemia (fluid loss), hypothermia (low body temperature) and breath difficulty due to the intake of hot air or smoke.

In some cases, patients with deep or widespread burns can be life-threatening. According to statistics, from Dr. ISHTIAQ AHMED CHAUDHARY in the study of burns and mortality, there is 100% mortality rate in patients with 70% total body surface area burns compared to the 100% survival rate in patients with less than 30%.


Most cases of first and second-degree burns that affect only the top layer of skin can be treated under cool running water or cool water for 15 minutes until pain subsides or taking a pain reliever and applying antibiotic cream.

Other higher degrees of burns should call 911 immediately.

Researchers with an aim to develop a strategy for making the alginate base hydrogel components against burned wound infection examined the effect of honey in the biofilm forming bacteria colonization in burned patients.

Following the collection of the honey from three different provinces of Iran, an alginate base hydrogel was prepared by the use of calcium chloride.

In vivo, the healing activities of prepared ointment were compared in infected burned rat models. 75% diluted thymol based honey collected from Damavand province showed the greatest inhibition of bacteria in wound compared to others.

The hydrogel was also the better healing activity in rats burned wound against the bacteria biofilm-forming bacteria colonization compared to the honey application.

Scientists may have found a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, according to studies.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of conditions associated with blood vessels and the heart.

According to the statistics provided by the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally. Approximately, 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016, representing 31% of all global deaths.

Most common risk factors associated with CVD are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.

Patients with CVD mostly were found to have some intermediate conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose and being overweight and obese.

Most common symptoms of CVD include persistent chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomforts, and conditions associated with lower blood circulation due to narrowing blood vessels such as shortness of breath, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms.

Some people before having a CVD may also experience symptoms of pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back.

If you experience some of the symptoms aforementioned, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Some researchers suggested that people inherited the mutated gene from the parent are also at a higher risk of CVD.

Dr. Sunil K. Nadar the lead scientist in the investigation of the genetics of CVD wrote, "The term ‘cardiovascular disease’ (CVD) encompasses a wide spectrum of diseases—including ischaemic heart disease (IHD), congenital structural heart disease and various inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies—each of which has its own etiology and pathogenesis".

And, "Our present understanding seems to suggest that it is not one gene on its own that leads to CVD, but rather an interaction between the effects of various genes".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the differentiation of natural compounds for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers in a joint study led by the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra examined the effects of regular consumption of bilberries on CVD risk reduction.

Women (n=25) and men (n=11) included in the study were asked to consume 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.

At the end of the study, the consumption of bilberries showed a significant decrease of risk factors associated with the onset of CVD, including total cholesterol (P=.017), LDL-C (P=.0347), TG (P=.001), glucose (P=.005), albumin (P=.001), γ-glutamyltransferase (P=.046), and a positive increase in HDL-C (P=.044).

In men, larger favorable changes were found in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C (P=.009) compared to women.

Interestingly, injection of bilberry over the period was not induced the favorable change but increase of LDL-C.

Dr, Habanova M, the lead scientist after taking into co and confounders, said, "the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVD risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".

Furthermore, in order to find more information about the bilberry anti CVD effects, researchers investigated the effect of bilberry juice on serum and plasma biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status in subjects with elevated levels of at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The randomized controlled trial included participants consumed either bilberry juice (n = 31) or water (n = 31) for 4 weeks.

Injection of bilberry juice resulted in a significant decrease in plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-15, and monokine induced by INF-gamma (MIG).

However, an increase in the plasma concentration of tumor nuclear factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) involved in the acute phase of systematic inflammation was also observed in the bilberry group.

Bilberry juice exerted a significant effect in modulating the protein associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines, through activation of a transcription factor, a crucial protein (nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kappaB)) associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.

Interestingly, injection of bilberry juice did not induce the change of other clinical parameters, including oxidative stress or antioxidant status.

The findings suggested that bilberry reduced risk CVD by modulating the inflammation processes.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
