Strawberries Eradicate Oral/Mouth Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a tasty whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Oral cancer is any malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva) and the roof of the mouth (palate).

Most cases of primary oral cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the mouth cavity tissue due to the alternation of DNA.

At the advanced after striking deeper into the cavity tissues, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

In general, oral cavity cancer tends to spread primarily to the lymph nodes of the neck first before it spreads or metastasizes to other areas. The second level of oral cancer metastasis is the lung.

The causes of oral cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that long-term use of tobacco, excessive alcohol drinking, infected by the human papillomavirus (HPV), people with previous cancer and family history of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), occupations associated with sun exposure are the prevalent risk factors of the onset of oral cancer.

However, most people who carry numbers of the above risk factor have never developed oral cancer.

Believe it or not, oral sex also one of the major cause of oral cancer. Some researchers suggested that some types of cancer are linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the mouth and throat. It's likely that some types of HPV are spread by oral sex.

According to statistics, 6% of men and 1% of women had an HPV infection in the mouth.

Dr. Rajiv Saini, at the Rural Dental College Loni, in the study "Oral sex and oral cancer: A virus link" wrote, "Oral sex may be practiced by people of all sexual orientations and the various types of oral sex performed are cunnilingus, fellatio, and analingus" and "Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be transmitted through oral sex with an infected partner".

"A good oral health, free from bleeding gums, lip sores, cuts, broken skin, and oral epithelium, enormously reduces the chances of transmission of infection among the partners indulging in oral sex".

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae.

The fruits have been grown all over the world in a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds of strawberry include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

With an aim to reconfirm the epidemiological studies suggested that adding a portion of strawberries ( Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), may have beneficial effects against oxidative stress-mediated diseases such as cancer, researchers examined multiple phenolic compounds, which are thought to contribute to their biological properties.

Oxidative stress is associated with the overexpression free radicals or deletion of antioxidant enzymes in the host body, leading to protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, the major causes of cancers.

Using high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) detection, identified 10 phenolic compounds from strawberry extracts, including cyanidin-3-glucoside ( 1), pelargonidin (2), pelargonidin-3-glucoside (3), pelargonidin-3-rutinoside (4), kaempferol (5), quercetin (6), kaempferol-3-(6'-coumaroyl)glucoside) (7), 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl-acrylic acid (8), glucose ester of ( E)- p-coumaric acid (9), and ellagic acid.

According to the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), the anthocyanins 1 (7156 microM Trolox/mg), 2 (4922 microM Trolox/mg), and 4 (5514 microM Trolox/mg) were the most potent antioxidants, compared to other compounds with similar concentration.

Moreover, crude extracts (250 microg/mL) and pure compounds (100 microg/mL) processed a significant effect in inhibiting the growth and inducing apoptosis of human oral (CAL-27, KB).

Additionally, by comparing the extracts of six popularly consumed berries--blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry, researchers found that all berries contain the major phenolics compounds, including anthocyanins, flavonols, flavanols, ellagitannins, gallotannins, proanthocyanidins, and phenolic acids in a different volume.

At concentrations ranging from 25 to 200 micro g/mL, the berry extracts exerted a similar effect as that of strawberry mentioned in the above study in blocking the growth of human oral (KB, CAL-27).

Increasing concentration of berry extract also showed to increase the inhibition of cell proliferation in all of the tested cell lines.

Black raspberry and strawberry extracts showed the most significant pro-apoptotic effects against the human oral (KB, CAL-27) cell line, probably due to the stimulation of the COX-2 in the production of macrophages against malignant cells.

The finding once again suggested that strawberry extracts showed significant pro-apoptotic effects against human oral (KB, CAL-27).

Taken altogether, strawberry processed high amounts of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer.

Honey, the Magic Cure for Gastroenteritis (Stomach Flu)

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastroenteritis, according to studies.

Gastroenteritis or stomach flu is an inflammatory condition of the stomach and intestines that causes gastrointestinal discomforts, including vomiting, and diarrhea and fever.

Most cases of gastroenteritis are caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infection associated with contaminated food and drinking water.

People with a weakened immune system such as elderly and infants are most vulnerable to the disease onset.

Most bacterial and parasite gastroenteritis are treated by antibiotics. However, in viral infection, no treatment is available.

Similar to other infectious diseases, gastroenteritis can be spread through person-person contact.

Acute gastroenteritis is deadly in children, causing millions of deaths each year in young children, mostly in developing communities.

Dr. Elizabeth Jane Elliott, in the examination of acute gastroenteritis in the children in the Western world, wrote, "In developed countries, it is a common reason for presentation to general practice or emergency departments and for admission to hospital. Dehydration, which may be associated with electrolyte disturbance and metabolic acidosis, is the most frequent and dangerous complication".

And, "Optimal management with oral or intravenous fluids minimizes the risk of dehydration and its adverse outcomes. Routine use of antibiotics, antidiarrhoeal agents, and antiemetics is not recommended and may cause harm".

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding potential and natural remedy for the treatment of gastroenteritis examined whether the addition of honey in oral rehydration solution (ORS) effect in the duration of symptoms of acute gastroenteritis in infants and children.

The study included 100 infants and children with acute gastroenteritis randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups, each consisting of 50 patients: Group I received ORS for rehydration (control), and Group II received ORS with honey.

Honey included treatment group showed reduced frequencies of vomiting and diarrhea significantly compared to the control group.

Additional honey also recovered normal hydration and satisfactory weight gain in a significantly shortened time compared to control.

Dr. Abdulrhman MA, the lead scientist said, "honey added to ORS promoted rehydration of the body and sped recovery from vomiting and diarrhea".

Futhermore, in order to find more information about honey activity on gastroenteritis, scientists at the
honey in oral rehydration solutions (ORS) effects given to infants and children with gastroenteritis.

Once again added honey shortens the duration of diarrhea in patients with bacterial gastroenteritis through its antibacterial properties.

In fact, pathogenic bacteria were significantly inhibited by honey at a concentration of 40% and above, including Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, and Candida albicans.

In nonbacterial gastroenteritis, honey displayed a similar effect as those of glucose on the duration of diarrhea.

Moreover, the high sugar content in honey could be used to promote sodium and water absorption from the bowel similar to those of oral rice water and sucrose.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "... honey have thus shown that when given with an ORS it shortens the duration of bacterial diarrhea and may safely be used as a substitute for glucose, provided that the solution contains electrolytes".

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy used for the prevention and treatment gastroenteritis with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of additional larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Normalizes the Level of Total Lipids Profile

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a whole fruit for the normalization of total high blood cholesterol, according to studies.

Total lipids profile is a lab test that measures the abnormal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides that can lead to cardiovascular disease.

The healthy level of low-density cholesterol is less than 70 mg/dL for those in very high-risk patients, 100 mg/dL for high-risk patients and 130 mg/dL for individuals who are at low risk for coronary artery disease.

The healthy level of high-density cholesterol is any number that is higher than 40 mg/dl.

The healthy level of triglycerides (TG) is any number that is less than 150 mg/dl.

Where dl is milligrams per deciliter

Total cholesterol is the total amount of cholesterol in the blood using the formula HDL level + LDL level + 20 percent of triglyceride level from the results of total lipids profile.

The healthy levels of total cholesterol can be classified as follows
  • Optimal level: Less than 200 mg/dL
  • Normal high level: 200-239 mg/dL
  • High level: 240 mg/dL and above

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

On finding a natural remedy in the reducing risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the artichoke in the subjects with hypercholesterolemia.

After 2 months of treatment, injection of artichoke showed a significant reduction in plasma total cholesterol (-19%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-16%), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-19%) and triglyceride levels (-15%), compared to standard diet.

There were no side effects found in the tested subjects during the course of study.

Dr. Cicero AFG, the lead scientists wrote, " on the short-term, the tested nutraceutical has been shown to be well tolerated and effective, even if not containing any statin-like compound".

Dr. Santos HO in the study to investigate the effect of artichoke on lipid profile by searching the medical literature appraised the Cochrane, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases, including articles published between 2000 and June 2018 on intervention in humans only.

The review on the selected studies suggested that
* ALE decreased serum LDL, total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.

* ALE showed no effect on the levels of HDL.

In details, according to the differentiation, ALE at doses of 2 to 3 g/d decreased 8-49 mg/dL for LDL concentration, 12-55 mg/dL for total cholesterol, and 11-51 mg/dL for triglycerides.

The improvement of the lipid profile of ALE was attributed to the components luteolin and chlorogenic acids found abundantly in artichoke.

Furthermore, the cardioprotective effect of ALE was associated with soluble fibers and inulin in the herb or food.

The findings clearly suggested that ALE protects the heart by improving the condition of the cluster associated with metabolic syndrome, particularly in blood cholesterol.

Taken together, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for improving the lipid profile against diseases associated with hypercholesterolemia, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study

3,3'-Diindolylmethane, the Natural Ingredient for the Treatment of Chronic Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of chronic diseases, with no side effects, according to studies.

Chronic diseases are a group of medical conditions most commonly associated with aging, including
arthritis, cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy and seizures, and obesity.

The exacted causes of chronic diseases are not identified. Aging, unhealthy lifestyle such as excessive alcohol drinking smoking, poor diet, lack of physical activity are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

According to the joint study led by the  Fordham University, chronic diseases are among the most prevalent and costly health conditions in the US, affecting over 133 millions of the US population as many of them suffer from at least one chronic disease and the number is growing in the rapid rate.

Some chronic diseases such as cancer have been found to be the leading causes of hospitalization, long-term disability, reduced quality of life, and death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, chronic diseases also are the major driver of health care costs accounted for nearly 75 percent of aggregate healthcare spending and increased absenteeism that impact workforce patterns.

Each chronic patient has cost the health care spending $5300 annually.

Believe it or not, chronic diseases in the US, chronic diseases are responsible for 7 out of 10 deaths yearly. In other words, chronic diseases kill more than 1.7 million Americans each year.

Some researchers suggested by changing unhealthy lifestyle pattern, chronic diseases may be preventable.

Dr. Walter C. Willett, the lead scientist in the concern about the risk chronic disease in poor lifestyle individuals wrote, "Several lines of evidence indicate that realistic modifications of diet and lifestyle can prevent most CAD, stroke, diabetes, colon cancer, and smoking-related cancers".

And, "Among U.S. adults, more than 90 percent of type 2 diabetes, 80 percent of CAD, 70 percent of stroke, and 70 percent of colon cancer are potentially preventable by a combination of nonsmoking, avoidance of overweight, moderate physical activity, healthy diet, and moderate alcohol consumption".

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic diseases analyzed 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) several biological activities on cellular and molecular levels against chronic diseases, including cancer.

DIM enhanced the function of the drug-metabolizing enzyme by blocking activity involved the promotion of cancer expression.

DIM affects multiple signaling pathways and target molecules which controls cell division, apoptosis, or angiogenesis deregulated in cancer cells.

DIM also prevented the development of hormone-dependent cancers.

Injection of DIM also was found to inhibit the onset of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes reduction through its antioxidant property in reducing oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radical.

Dr. Licznerska B, the lead scientist after taking into account other factors wrote in the final report, "the current experimental data on the I3C and DIM activity and the results of clinical studies indicating their role in the prevention of chronic diseases".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Sinigrin Protects Our Body Against the Onset of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound against diseases associated with chronic inflammation, according to studies.

Acute inflammation that lasts a day or 2 mostly associated with proinflammatory response to tissue injury, usually appearing within minutes or hours, depending on the severity of the damage.

In other words, in the acute phase of inflammation, the immune systematic response of the macrophages stimulate the process of coagulation to cover the wound or injure and production of the inflammatory cytokines to destroy the foreign pathogens which try to enter the body through the wound or injury.

Most common symptoms of acute inflammation are pain, redness, loss of function, swelling and heat.

In the acute phase of inflammation, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines which protect our body against the foreign invasion may damage the nearby tissues and death of the healthy cell, leading to the abnormal formation of scars.

Chronic inflammation is a medical condition caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all pathogens in the acute phase of inflammation, leading to the compromise of the immune system.

Chronic inflammation is a leading cause of various types of disease, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis.

Unlike the symptoms in the acute inflammation, symptoms of chronic inflammation are totally depending to the types of disease and location of the inflammation, including fatigue and unintended weight loss and loss of appetite in cancer,  chest pain in chronic lung disease, and joint pain in RA.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, researchers investigated the effect of sinigrin on macrophage function.

In RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, sinigrin inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines including nitric oxide (NO)  and the expression of COX-2 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

Injection of sinigrin significantly suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 by suppressing the protein in cellular response to oxidative stress and stimuli.

Additional analysis, sinigrin also processed a significant effect in inhibiting genes expression involved the mediation of innate immunity and inflammatory responses.

Dr. Lee HW, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, " Our findings also provide evidence that the pharmacological modulation of sinigrin could have an anti-inflammatory effect".

In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation, AITC protected the microglial cells against neuroinflammation by inhibiting the cellular response against oxidative stress induced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

In other words, AITC protects neuroblastoma cells by controlling with JNK/NF-κB/TNF-α cross-linking associated with the expression of the gene in inducing apoptosis.

Dr. Subedi L, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "These findings provide novel insights into the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of AITC on microglial cells, which may have clinical significance in neurodegeneration".

Taken altogether, sinigrin may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

Bilberry Protects the Lung Cells Integrity and Viability Against Lung Cancer, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Bilberry may have a strong effect in reducing the risk and treatment of lung cancer, according to studies.

Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the lung tissue.

Most cases of lung cancer caused by alternation of calls DNA begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the lung.

At the advanced stage, the cancer cell from the lung can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of fluid and blood, leading to the secondary metastasis.

According to statistics, in 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Also in 2017, lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians.

Smoking although is a major cause of lung cancer, however, not all lung cancer patients with lung cancer are smokers. Nonsmokers lung cancer may be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors.

Some researchers suggested that lung cancer in many incidences are associated with oxidative stress as found in advanced lung cancer patients.

Dr. the lead scientist in the examination of the oxidative stress in the risk lung cancer said, "Oxidative stress also plays important roles in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including aging, degenerative disease, and cancer. Among cancers, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer in the Western world".

And, "Distinct measures of primary and secondary prevention have been investigated to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by lung cancer. Among them, it seems that physical activity and nutrition have some beneficial effects".

The results clearly suggested that the external sources of dietary antioxidants from the food sources may be helpful in reducing the risk of lung cancer through suppressing the overexpression of free radicals before they can induce oxidative stress.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a replacement for the treatment of lung cancer with no side effects examined the berries' bioactive compound anthocyanidins and its derivative cyanidin, malvidin, peonidin, petunidin, and delphinidin anticancer effects.

A mixture, including blueberry, bilberry and Indian blackberry ('Jamun') was selected to test in two aggressive non-small-cell lung cancer cell lines.

Injection of the mixture exerted a higher induction of cell-cycle arrest, apoptosis, and suppression of NSCLC cell invasion and migration compared to individual anthocyanidins.

According to tested assays, the mixture inhibited lung cancer cells apoptosis by decreasing the expression of the genes associated with cells cycle division and cell survival and proliferation.

Futhermore, the mixture also elevated the protein involved in cancer cell death programming.

Interestingly, in vivo, both the mixture of anthocyanidins from bilberry (0.5mg/mouse) and the most potent anthocyanidin, delphinidin (1.5mg/mouse) significantly inhibited the growth of H1299 xenografts in nude mice by 60%.

Dr. Kausar H and colleagues said, in the final report "Our results thus demonstrate the therapeutic potential of berries rich in this mixture of diverse anthocyanidins for non-small-cell lung cancer treatment and to prevent its future recurrence and metastasis".

In order to reveal more information about bilberry anti-lung cancer activity, researchers assessed the involvement of oxidative stress in lung adenocarcinogenesis, using mice deficient in the 8-hydroxyguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (Ogg1) gene and wild-type mice (C57BL6/J origin) administered 4-(N-hydroxymethylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK).

Where deficiency of  8-hydroxyguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (Ogg1) gene was found to associate with the advanced stage of cancer.

On week after induced lung cancer by administered 4-(N-hydroxymethylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), selected mice were treated with one of 4 antioxidants (phenyl N-tert-butyl nitrone 0.13% in drinking water, resveratrol 20 ppm in the diet, lactoferrin 2% in diet and bilberry powder 2% in diet) or no supplement for 33 weeks.

All antioxidant application demonstrated a strong inhibition against lung adenocarcinogenesis, through modulating the gene expression of gene deficiency such as 8-hydroxyguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (Ogg1) and genes mutation such as Egfr and K-ras.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds me be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Sinigrin, the Potential Anti Tongue Cancer Bioactive Compound, Researchers Found

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of tongue cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Tongue cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the tongue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of tongue cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tongue. At the early stage, tongue cancer patients may not experience any size due to the very small of the tumors.

However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of the persistent tongue and/or jaw pain as the tumor has pressed on the nearby nerve cells,  a lump or tumor inside the mouth. a white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil or lining in the mouth and persistent sore throat and difficulty swallowing or chewing.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

There are many risk factors associated with the disease, including long-term use of tobacco, excessive alcohol drinking, sun exposure to your lips.

Some researchers suggested that sexually transmitted virus human papillomavirus (HPV) and people with a weakened immune system also have been found in patients with tongue cancer.

The Cleveland Clinic wrote in the article of Oropharyngeal Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection
"Human papillomavirus (HPV), commonly known as the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer in women, is increasingly being recognized now as a cause of infections that colonize the back of the mouth (throat or oropharynx), including the tongue base and tonsils, and potentially a cause of cancer of the head and neck".

The results strongly suggested that people who carry the HPV virus in their mouth are at an increased risk of tongue cancer, compared to those without.

Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belonging to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.

Scientists on the searching natural compound with the inhibitory activity against the tongue
carcinogenesis examined the effects of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and sinigrin (SIN) on the initiation and post-initiation phases of tongue cancer.

Selected male ACI/N rats. induced tongue cancer by the injection of by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) divided into
* Group 1 was given 4-NQO (10 ppm) in the drinking water for 12 weeks, starting at 7 weeks of age;

* Groups 2 and 3 were given 4-NQO and fed the diets containing I3C (1,000 ppm) and SIN (1,200 ppm) for 14 weeks, respectively, starting at 6 weeks of age;

* Groups 4 and 5 were given 4-NQO and then they were fed I3C and SIN containing diets for 23 weeks, respectively, starting one week after 4-NQO exposure;

* Groups 6 and 7 were given I3C and SIN alone, respectively, during the experiment; and

* Group 8 served as an untreated control.

At the end of  the experiment at week 37, the incidence of tongue neoplasms (squamous cell papilloma and carcinoma) in group 2 (1/15, 7%), group 3 (1/15, 7%), group 4 (3/15, 20%) or group 5 (2/15, 13%) was significantly smaller than that in group 1 (12/17, 71%).

Group groups 2, 3, and 5 showed no tongue carcinomas developed. In other words, the injection of I3C and SIN restored the infected cell to healthy levels induced by the 4-NQO.

Group treated with I3C and SIN also showed reduced levels of the incidence of preneoplastic lesions such as hyperplasia and dysplasia.

In other words, I3C and SIN not only are effective against tongue cancer but also inhibit the progression of preneoplastic lesions of the tongue in group 2 (11/15, 73%), group 3 (10/15, 67%), group 4 (11/15, 73%) or group 5 (10/15, 67%) was significantly lower than that in group 1 (17/17, 100%) (P = 0.04 or P = 0.02).

Furthermore, There were no tongue neoplasms in rats of groups 6, 7, and 8.

Moreover, the Administration of I3C and SIN also caused significant decreases in the number and area of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions protein (AgNORs) in the expression of in the tongue tumor pathology.

Dr. Tanaka T and colleagues wrote in the final report, " I3C and SIN inhibited rat tongue carcinogenesis in both the initiation and post-initiation phases, when administered in these respective phases together with, or following treatment with, 4-NQO".

Taken altogether, sinigrin (SIN) used alone or combined with I3C may be effective for the prevention and treatment of tongue cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SIN in a form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
