Honey, Eliminates the Bad Breath Instantly

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of bad breath, according to studies.

Bad breath also known as halitosis, is a condition caused by an unpleasant odor of the mouth.

The causes of bad breath may be results from a combination of food, tobacco products, poor dental hygiene, health problems, dry mouth, oral infections, dental problems, or medications.

However, chemicals produced by some diseases, such as some cancers, metabolic disorders, can cause a distinctive breath odor.

Chronic reflux of stomach acids (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) may be considered a major cause of bad breath in older adults.

Most common treatment of bad breath in the Western world is the use of mouth rinses and toothpaste if the bad breath is the results of bacterial infection.

People with bad breath due to lose-denture may need to see their dentists for the correction.

However, if the bad breath is associated with dental diseases such as gum disease then seeing a related field specialist may be necessary.

Some researchers suggested that obesity is also tied to bad breath. The Tel Aviv University in examing the risk bad breath in obese wrote, " the more overweight you are, the more likely your breath will smell unpleasant to those around you".

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers with an aim to find a natural remedy for the treatment of bad breath examined the Manuka honey anti oral halitosis activity.

Manuka honey contains typical antibacterial substance methylglyoxal (MGO) which has been found to process a strong antibacterial activity against oral bacteria.

The study to compare the before and after intake of Manuka honey or Acacia honey anti their halitosis effect included 10 healthy subjects (average age: 36 years old, 5 men and 5 women).

The concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by the oral bacteria and anaerobic bacteria in mouth decreased after intake of both honey, but faster in the Manuka honey compared to those of Acacia honey.

Manuka honey showed 127 times higher amount of MGO than acacia honey, according to analysis.

These results clearly suggested that the efficacy of honey in the inhibition of bad breath was attributed to the strong antibacterial activity of MGO.

In order to reveal more information about honey anti bad breath activity, researchers investigated the effect of honey in preventing gingivitis and dental caries.

In a total of  20 female orthodontic patients between the age from12–18 participated in this randomized controlled study, researchers compared the effect of honey with either 10% sucrose or 10% sorbitol that served as positive and negative controls.

Honey injection showed significant differences in pH compared to the pH observed in the sorbitol group. The maximum pH drop occurred at 5 min in both the honey and sucrose groups and the pH following sucrose exposure fell <5.5 and was associated with a 30 min recovery time.

Furthermore, bacterial counts were in the honey treatment group significantly reduced compared to the other treatment groups.

Moreover, honey also significantly inhibited the growth of all studied strains compared to inhibition observed with antibiotics.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly, Manuka honey or Acacia honey may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of bad breath, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best Remedy for Depression with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment fo depression according to studies.

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think and act.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome.

Most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering and thoughts of harming his or herself.

Readers may find other symptoms not be included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread depression in the Western world may be associated with life stress at work and home.

Dr. T. Plieger, the lead scientist in examining the effects of psychological stress on depression wrote, "A significantly closer relation between depression and life stress than between burnout and life stress was found in the healthy (z = 3.01, p = .003) as well as in the depressed sample".

And "This finding was supported in both samples by means of a path analytic approach where the associations between life stress, burnout, and depression were controlled for the possible mediator and moderator effects, also considering the influence of age".

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on searching an alternative remedy for the treatment of depression with no side effects examined the effects of honey on several studies through searching the database of online medical literature.

8 studies satisfied the standard criteria and guidelines were chosen, including 2 RCTs of human subjects and 6 animal studies.

The randomized studies suggested that depressed elderly treated with a mix of honey and barely exhibited a significant decrease in depression, stress, and mood disturbances scores compared to the control group.

In menopause women, treatment with honey or a mix of honey and pollens exerted a significant activity in the improvement of the three subscales of the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) by 68.3% and 70.9%, respectively.

The results also suggested that posttreatment demonstrates a better effect compared to the pretreatment when the mixture of honey was applied.

Furthermore, the application showed similar effects on the serum levels of cholesterol, such as total, HDL, or LDL cholesterol), triglycerides or oestradiol in both groups.

According to the survey returned, participants reported that they observed improvements 3-4 days after the initiation of treatment. On a 10-point taste scale, (1 = very good and 10 = very bad) honey received an average score of 2.3, whereas a honey and pollen mix received an average score of 6.0.

Interestingly, the side effects of exhaustion and edema of lower extremities were reported by some participants and 2 participants were withdrawn from the study due to the taste of the mix of honey with bare powder.

In animal studies, all experiments displayed a positive effect of honey on depression. Some studies also found that honey improves depressive-like behaviors, cognitive function, and symptoms of anhedonia.

Futhermore, honey injection also showed a reduction of anxiety symptoms and improvement of spatial memory.

Moreover, honey alone or a combination of honey and other bee products inhibited MAO enzyme activity in the liver of treated mice.

Where monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme which metabolizes monoamines was elevated in depressed patients.

And, the anti-depressive effects were correlated to the volume of honey intake. In other words, greater improvements were associated with the increased administration of high doses of honey.

In order to reveal more information about honey depression activity, researchers examined
Tualang and Acacia honey in patients with the stress-depression disorder.

Both Tualang and Acacia honey showed a significant anti-depression activity through increasing production of levels of antioxidants.

However,  Tualang honey consumption was found to be more suitable in regulating weight-related effects of stress-depression disorder compared to that of Acacia honey which exerted more profound effects in alleviating depression effects and managing glucocorticoids imbalance effects of the stress-depression disorder.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang, and Acacia honey, used alone or combined with other bee products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of depression, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Alfalfa, A Potent and Natural Dietary Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal alfalfa may have a profound and positive effect in enhancing the expression of antioxidant in the body, some scientists suggested.

Antioxidants are stable molecules which inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.

A free radical is a highly reactive atom with a single electron in the outer ring.

Free radicals produced in our body is a natural process derived either from essential metabolism through the processes of food intake or from external sources through directly contacting the skin or the air we breathe including exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

Some foods are antioxidants producers such as fruits and vegetable and whole grain, while others such as processed meats, alcohol are radicals producers. Particularly, fats and oils can easily be oxidized if they are cooked in high heat.

In order to counter the overexpression of free radicals which add to the body's burden, our body produces enzymes antioxidants and metal carrier proteins to neutralize them before they can cause damage.

Depending on the degrees of free radical invasion, antioxidant enzymes can be categorized into first, second, third and even fourth line of defense.

Dr. O.M, in the examine the antioxidant defense wrote, "The role and effectiveness of the first line defense antioxidants which basically include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is important and indispensable in the entire defense strategy of antioxidants, especially in reference to superoxide anion radical (*O2) which is perpetually generated in normal body metabolism, particularly through the mitochondrial energy production pathway (MEPP)".

The statement clearly suggested that in healthy individual antioxidant enzymes synthesized form our body is good enough to protect the body from bombardments of free radicals.

However, for people with a weakened immune system, chronic illness, dietary sources of antioxidants may be needed.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. The syndrome is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depressed levels of antioxidant or both.

Oxidative stress has been found to induce widespread damage due to a set of a chain reaction auto-catalytically by free radicals that attacks the lipid bilayers of the cell walls, induces lipid, protein damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cancers.

Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belongings to the family Fabaceae.

The herb has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding. The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year for the treatment of high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc.

North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.

In the reaffirming the herbal alfalfa antioxidant activity especially scavenging activity for hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical, researchers launched a study to determine whether a lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa or Medicago sativa L. could exert antioxidant activity against carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress and liver injury in rats.

Before injecting the lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa, rats treated by CCl (4) showed a significant increase of serum of oxidative stress markers observed by the levels of transaminase, ALP, bilirubin, lipid profile. and liver MDA accompanied by the decline of antioxidant status in liver non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH); and total protein (TP) contents.

Pretreatment with alfalfa and silymarin for three weeks prior to the administration of CCl (4) significantly prevented the increase of oxidative markers by reducing the oxidative stress indicated by elevated NP-SH and TP concentration of the antioxidant liver enzyme.

Futhermore, the incidence of liver lesion induced by the injection of CCL(4) also reduced by the pretreatment of alfalfa extract.

Application of alfalfa extracts also exerted a potent scavenging activity against hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical.

These results indicated that alfalfa may be considered a novel natural antioxidant. Dr.Al-Dosari MS wrote in the final report, " alfalfa extract possesses hepatoprotective and antioxidative stress properties possibly through its antioxidant phytochemical constituents and substantiates its use in various liver disorders as a hepatoprotector".

Additionally, researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, in the testing antioxidant effect of a dietary protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate of alfalfa on raw meat launched an evaluation by adding the concentration in turkey diet.

The study included 120 turkeys assigned randomly assigned to 3 groups (group I-control group; group II--with 1.5% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate; group III--with 3% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate).

The addition of protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentration of alfalfa to a turkey diet protects the deterioration of breast and thigh meat quality.

Also, by examining the changes in color, oxymyoglobin content, TBARS, and oxidation-reduction potential values, researchers said " the inclusion of the concentration to turkey diets acts as an antioxidant in the raw meat.

Taken altogether, alfalfa may be considered a natural antioxidant which improves the antioxidant profile in the body against the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of oxidative stress.

Whole Food Papaya, the Best Anti Diabetes Functional Food, Studies Found

Kyle J. Norton

Papaya may be the next generation of whole food for the prevention and treatment of type II diabetes with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Diabetes is a condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Most cases of type II diabetes are either caused by cells in pancreas died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Epidemiological studies suggested that obesity, family history, ethnicity, the increase in age, gestation diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the prediabetes and type II diabetes.

Dr. Stephen S. Rich, in the article "the genetics of diabetes and Its complications", suggested that type II diabetes may be a genetically related disease. Unlike type 1 diabetes, in which there seems to be an autoimmune process, type 2 diabetes is a disease of relative rather than absolute insulin deficiency. Genes involved in type 2 diabetes, with the most promising, replicated findings on chromosomes are 1q21-q24, 2q37, 12q24 and 20.

Untreated and unmanageable type II diabetes may induce complications of the onset of cardiovascular disease, nerve damage (neuropathy). kidney damage (nephropathy), eye damage (retinopathy). foot damage and kin conditions.

Medication used for the treatment of type II diabetes is focused on alleviating the symptoms and improving quality of life and slowing down the progression of the disease.

If you currently intake medicine for treatment of diabetes, please sure you know all the side effects for the preventive measure.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Unripe pawpaw fruit (Carica papaya) not only inhibited α-amylase, α-glucosidase but also reduced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner, in rat pancreas(1).

The key enzymes of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, involved in the digestion of carbohydrates, have been linked to the onset of type 2 diabetes. Inhibition of these enzymes can significantly reduce the post-prandial increase of blood glucose and have been also used for management of blood glucose level in type 2 diabetic and borderline patients by therapists (2).

In streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats study, the aqueous extract of leaves of C. papaya administered strongly controlled blood glucose levels(3), through the prevention of hepatocyte disruption, as well as accumulation of glycogen and lipids via its hypoglycemic and antioxidant effect(4)

In a new study, conducted by the researchers at the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, fermented papaya preparation was tested whether it improves dermal wound healing outcomes in adult diabetic mice by preventing the risk of infections(5).

The result was astonishing, the fermentation not only up-regulated the Sp1 DNA binding activity(modulating the cellular response to DNA damage) in Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) but also the protein and mRNA expression of Rac2(regulates a number of cellular functions)(5).

A randomized controlled clinical trial conducted at the Cardiac Centre, ANDI Centre of Excellence for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research and Department of Biosciences University of Mauritius, suggested that oral administration of 6g FPP®/day for a period of 14 weeks could improve the general health status of several organs targeted by oxidative stress during diabetes and  the supplement may be used in the management the complications of diabetes such as cardiovascular disease, neurological disease and other conditions worsened by overt inflammation and oxidative stress(6).

Taken altogether, unripe, fermented papaya and its' leaves may be effective in diabetic management by controlling the levels of glucose and reduced risk of complications.

Some Western researchers insisted that large sample size and multicenter studies are necessary to validate its effectiveness by identifying the ingredients which are comparable to recently pharmaceutical medicine in use because geography, environment, time of harvest, etc. may influence the concentration of the food cultivation.

In fact, herbalists have long acknowledged that the external factors (mentioned above) may alter the quality of the herbs and foods by classifying these difference either through price or formula differentiation.

Indeed, the effectiveness with little or no adverse side effects of the formula is not the concentration of individual herb and a herb itself but the interaction of all ingredients in a herb and herbs in the same formula. Extracting only one ingredient of the herb for treatment of certain diseases may be effective but enhances complicated consequences.

Phytochemical Allicin, the Anti Colon Cancer Bioactive compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemicals may be the next potential sources of a new medicine for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.

Phytochemical allicin may be the next natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Colon is a large intestine formed part of the digestive system where water is reabsorbed and waste material is stored as feces before being removed.

Colon cancer is the medical condition characterized by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly due to change of DNA.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. However, at the later stage, colon cancer may cause secondary metastasis, leading to cancers forming on other tissues and organs, a distance away through lymph and blood.

According to the statistics, the risk of colon cancer has been rising in younger age groups coincidently with the declining rate in older age groups.

Sadly, the proportion of cases diagnosed in individuals younger than age 50 increased from 6% in 1990 to 11% in 2013. Most of these cases (72%) occur in people who are in their 40s.

The causes of colon cancer are unknown, Some researchers suggested that the widespread colon cancer over the past few decades in the developed world probably is the result of the promotion of the Western diet that leads to obesity.

Dr. E E Frezza, the lead scientist at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Cente, in the study to examine obesity in the risk colon cancer wrote, "Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases" and "Visceral abdominal fat has been identified as the essential fat depot for pathogenetic theories that relate obesity and colon cancer".

And, "Although WC is better established as a measure of obesity than BMI, the evidence for colon cancer risk is not secure on this point; combining BMI and WC measurements would appear, at present, to be the wisest approach for colon cancer risk assessment".

The finding strongly suggested that obesity is a major risk factor of colon cancer.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, researchers at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem examined the effects of allicin on cell proliferation of colon cancer cell lines HCT-116, LS174T, HT-29, and Caco-2.

Injection of allicin preparation exerted a time- and dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on these cells at concentrations ranging from 6.2 to 310 μM.

Treatment with allicin induced HCT-116 apoptotic cell death through reducing the numbers of the chromosome in the DNA in the cancer cells, increasing the function and proteins associated with cell apoptosis and decreasing the expression of proteins involved cell proliferation and migration.

Futhermore, allicin treatment also induced cell death through cancer cell degradation.

Moreover, allicin application also activated the protein which protects the normal cell against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation and reduces the function of the phytochemicals in the inhibition of the HCT-116 proliferation without affecting the cancer apoptosis.

In vivo and vitro, researchers evaluated the combined effect of allicin and CPT-11 against the human colon cancer cell line LoVo.

Allicin treatment alone inhibited the growth of LoVo cells in a dose and time-dependent manner, with an IC50 value of 32.23, 10.74, 6.58 mg x L(-1) at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, respectively.

The apoptosis rate of LoVo cells increased progressively as the cells were treated with increasing concentration of allicin in 24 h, while the apoptosis rate achieved peak value when the cells were treated with allicin at the concentration of 8 mg x L(-1) in 48 h.

These results strongly suggested that low concentrations of allicin (< 4 mg x L(-1)) leads to G2/M cell cycle arrest, and higer concentrations ( > 4 mg x L(-1)) exerts G1 + G2/M cell cycle arrest in 24 h.

Compared with a single use of CPT-11, the combined use of CPT-11 and allicin (4.0, 8.0 mg x L(-1), respectively) showed increasing cytotoxicity on the LoVo cells, with IC50 of 24 h decreasing from 47.5 to 7.4 and 7.2 mg x L(-1), respectively.

Dr. Gao Y, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, "Allicin has significant anti-proliferation effect on human colon cancer cell line LoVo by induction of apoptosis and arrestment of the cell cycle and can enhance the cytotoxicity of CPT-11 on the colon cancer LoVo cell".

Taken altogether, phytochemical Allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, pending to large sample and multicenter human study.

Honey Improves the sleep Quality Naturally with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the improvement of sleep quality with no side effects, according to studies.

Sleep disorders are conditions can be acute or chronic. Most of us experience sleep disturbance sometimes due to some specific and unspecific events. However, chronic sleep disorders are the changes in the way that you sleep.

Most people with chronic sleep disorder experience symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or increased movement during sleep, and difficulty falling asleep.

Sleep quality can be measured by examing the.way that you sleep, including the time period that you need to fall to sleep and how many times you have awakened and drifted back to sleep during night sleep.

According to the statistic provided by the National Sleep Foundation’s inaugural Sleep Health Index45 % of Americans have poor or insufficient sleep. that affects their daily activities at least once in the past seven days.

The National Sleep Foundation continued, "...despite sleeping within the recommended number of hours a night, 35 percent of Americans report their sleep quality as “poor” or “only fair.” Twenty percent of Americans reported that they did not wake up feeling refreshed on any of the past seven days".

What causes poor quality of sleep in American? Some researchers suggested these may be results from occupation and occupation stress.

Dr, Eui-Joong Kim, the lead scientists, in examing the stressors' effect on sleep quality said, "It is possible that different types of stressors may bring with them different impacts on sleep" and " (a) some aspect of daily stress (such as job stress) and life events (such as divorce, bereavement), (b) experimentally imposed stressors (laboratory-based studies), and (c) traumatic stressors (such as disasters or PTSD)".

Additionally, " The first and last categories typically involve a longer duration of the stress exposure with varying levels of intensity; the experimental stressors, on the other hand, typically involve a short-term exposure to mild stress".

These results partly explained why over 20% of American suffer from poor quality of sleep.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of sleep quality, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of 3 honey products (eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, or Labiatae honey) to placebo (silan date extract) in children with upper respiratory tract infections (URIs).

The study included 300 children aged 1 to 5 years with URIs, nocturnal cough, and illness duration of ≤ 7 days from 6 general pediatric community clinics.

Eligible children received a single dose of 10 g of eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, Labiatae honey, or placebo administered 30 minutes before bedtime. There was a significant improvement in sleep quality from the night before treatment to the night of treatment in all 3 honey products and the placebo group.

However, the improvement was greater in the honey groups.

Honey products were rated higher than the silan date extract for symptomatic relief of their children's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to URI, According to the survey returned from parents.

Dr. Cohen HA the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Honey may be a preferable treatment for a cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood URI".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information of honey effects in cough and sleep difficulty, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of buckwheat honey or honey-flavored dextromethorphan (DM) with no treatment on nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood upper respiratory tract infections.

The study included 105 children aged 2 to 18 years with upper respiratory tract infections, nocturnal symptoms, and illness duration of 7 days or less were given a single dose of buckwheat honey, honey-flavored DM, or no treatment administered 30 minutes prior to bedtime.

Honey treatment group demonstrated significant differences in symptom improvement between treatment groups.

In paired comparisons, honey was significantly superior to no treatment for cough frequency and the combined score.

And, according to the survey returned by the parents, honey is most favorable for symptomatic relief of their child's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty in children with upper respiratory tract infection.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the improvement of sleep quality, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Natural Treatment of Anxiety Disorder with No Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of anxiety disorder, according to studies.

Anxiety disorder is a class of medical conditions associated with chronic worries and fear, leading to symptoms of the fast heart rate and shakiness.

Most people with anxiety may experience the feeling of nervousness in responding to events such as a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

According to the statistics, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in Canada and approximately 1 in every 8 Canadians is affected by the illness. In other words, over 250,000 people in Canada suffer from anxiety.

Family history, gender (women are more likely diagnosed with the condition compared to men), chronic stress, people with traumatic life experiences and the use of substances are some prevalent risk factors of anxiety.

However, some researchers suggested the widespread anxiety disorder probably is correlated with the onset of obesity over the past few decades. In fact, over 68% of American are either overweight or obese.

Dr. Lykouras L, the lead scientist in the concerns of obesity risk of anxiety disorder wrote, "
Obesity has been associated with anxiety disorders as follows: most of the studies show a positive relationship with panic disorder, mainly in women, with specific phobia and social phobia. Some authors have found a relationship with generalized anxiety disorder but a negative relationship has been also reported. Only a few studies have found the association between obesity and agoraphobia, panic attacks and posttraumatic stress disorder".

And, "Anxiety is also a common trait in personality disorders. There is no single personality type characteristic of the morbidly obese, they differ from the general population as their self-esteem and impulse control is lower. Obese patients present with passive-dependent and passive-aggressive personality traits, as well as a trend for somatization and problem denial".

The finding strongly suggested in some aspects anxiety can be a cause of obesity and vice versa.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of anxiety disorder with no side effects evaluated the antioxidant and anxiolytic-like effect of Tualang honey in stressed ovariectomized (OVX) rats.

The study included animals divided into 6 groups, (i) nonstressed sham-operated control rats, (ii) sham-operated control rats exposed to stress, (iii) nonstressed OVX rats, (iv) OVX rats exposed to stress, (v) OVX rats exposed to stress and treated with 17 β-oestradiol (E2) (20 μg daily, sc), and (vi) OVX rats exposed to stress and treated with Tualang honey (0.2 g/kg body weight, orally).

Before treatment of Tualang honey, OVX rats showed a significant increased anxiety-like behavior due to increased stress, compared to other groups. Injection of either Tualang honey or E2  significantly decreased anxiety-like behavior.

Honey treatment rats demonstrated reduced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) which are biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Furthermore, the levels/activities antioxidant enzymes produced by the rats such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferases (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR) were significantly increased in the brain homogenates of treated stressed OVX groups compared to untreated stressed OVX.

The finding strongly supported that honey processed the anxiolytic activity in the animal model.

Dr. Badriya Al-Rahbi, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "Tualang honey has protective effects against brain oxidative stress and may be useful alternative anxiolytic agent especially for postmenopausal women.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang honey may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of anxiety disorder, pending to the confirmation of large samp;e size and multicenter human study.
