Calendula, the Best Anti Cancers Herbal Remedy, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, according to the studies.

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in some specific tissues and organs due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Depending on the stage and specific types of cancer, some cancers do not cause any symptoms such as liver cancer.

However, at the later stage, the larger size of the tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to localized bleeding and pain accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

At this stage, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs through fields and blood circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.

There are some common factors shared by many types of cancer such as family and personal history, ethnicity and gender, some researchers found that unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major risks in the induction of the diseases.

Dr. Katzke, Verena A Ph.D., the lead scientist in the concern of lifestyle and cancer risk, wrote, "Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, diet, and physical inactivity, and also reproductive and hormonal factors are considered as causes of cancer and main targets for primary prevention".

And, " While smoking, which may be responsible for around 20% to 30% of all incident cancers, is clearly the strongest lifestyle-related risk factor overall, followed by alcohol consumption and obesity, the importance of specific factors for individual cancer types and subtypes varies greatly.".

In other words, by changing to a healthy lifestyle, the risk of cancers can be reduced substantially.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

Researchers on finding natural chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer investigated the cytotoxic anti-tumor and immunomodulatory activities and in vivo antitumor effect of Laser Activated Calendula Extract (LACE), a novel extract of the plant Calendula Officinalis (Asteraceae).

The tumor cell lines included in the study are derived from leukemias, melanomas, fibrosarcomas and breast, prostate, cervix, lung, pancreas and colorectal cancer.

The LACE extract showed a potent in vitro inhibition of tumor cell proliferation a wide variety of human and murine tumor cell lines, ranged from 70 to 100%.

The cancer cells inhibition was attributed to the protein associated with cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase and induced apoptosis.

Furthermore, the intraperitoneal injection or oral administration of LACE extract in nude mice inhibits in vivo tumor growth of Ando-2 melanoma cells and prolongs the survival day of the mice.

However, human peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) and NKL cell lines, lACE extract exerted an opposite effect.

These results suggested that LACE aqueous extract has 2 potential anti-tumor therapeutic effects: cytotoxic tumor cell activity and lymphocyte activation on selected cancer cell lines.

Moreover, in male mice injected with B16F-10 melanoma cells through the tail vein and simultaneously treated with C.officinalis flower extract. researcher showed that
* Simultaneous administration of C. officinalis extract to tumor-bearing C57BL/6 mice reduced the lung tumor nodules by 74% with 43.3% increase in lifespan

* Elevated levels of inflammatory expression including the proinflammatory cytokines were found to be significantly lowered in the C. officinalis treated animals.

* The extract also inhibited expression of the matrix and enzymes associated with cancer proliferation and activated the family protein associated with the modulation of cancer cell transcriptional profile.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a safe functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of cancers with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, the Anti Gastric Cancer Natural Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent spice which processes the potential for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, some studies suggested.

Gastric cancer is also known as stomach cancer, a medical and chronic condition caused by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the stomach tissues due to the alternation of DNA.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of gastric cancer, either they know people with the same health conditions, in the same family, some are susceptible to the DNA alternation, while others do not.

At the early stage, gastric cancer cell which has grown on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach does not cause any symptoms due to the very small size of the tumor.

However, at the later stage, the large tumor size may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to internal bleeding and severe pain. Also, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a secondary metastasis.

Common sites metastases of liver cancer are liver (48%), peritoneum (32%), lung (15%), and bone (12%).

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 26,240 new cases of gastric cancer will be diagnosed (16,520 in men and 9,720 in women), and gastric cancer causes the death of 10,800 people including 6,510 men and 4,290 women.

The 5 years survival rate of localized gastric cancer is 67%, compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Although there are many risk factors involved the onset of gastric cancer, epidemiologically, some researchers suggested the change of lifestyle associated with the promotion of the Western diet is the major prevalent risk factor in the Western world.

Dr, P. Bertuccio, the lead scientist in the compared the gastric cancer risk of the Western and ‘Prudent/healthy’ diet wrote, "A favorable role on GC emerged for the ‘Prudent/healthy’, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63–0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category. Similar results emerged for separate anatomical subtypes. An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the ‘Western/unhealthy’ dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21–1.89)".

And, "There is a ∼2-fold difference in GC risk between a ‘Prudent/healthy’ diet-rich in fruits and vegetables, and a ‘Western/unhealthy’ diet-rich in starchy foods, meat, and fats".

The results strongly suggested the protective role of high fruits and vegetable diet against the onset of gastric cancer.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer examined the role of ginger in combatting GI cancer, with little or no side effects.

Ginger and its active components including 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol exerted strong anticancer activities against GI cancer.

The anticancer activity of ginger and its isolated compounds attributed to the ability to modulation the proteins, cytokines, matrix, and enzymes associated with the pro-apoptosis, cancer cell cycle arrest anti-proliferation, and cell death programming.

In vitro, ginger extract and its active components also demonstrated the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic potency against gastric cancer cell line.

In order to reveal more details of ginger and its bioactive against the gastric cancer cells, researchers assess the [6]-Gingerol anti-gastric tumor activity.

According to the A CCK-8 assay, [6]-gingerol inhibited the cell viability of HGC-27 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

The Colony formation assay indicated that pretreatment of [6]-gingerol prior to Ionizing radiation (IR) decreased the survival and proliferation of HGC-27 cells.

The combination of [6]-gingerol with IR enhanced IR-induced cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase by 53.5% compared to 41.3% of IR alone.

Pretreatment of [6]-gingerol increased IR-induced apoptosis compared with IR alone.

The efficacy of [6]-gingrol in inhibiting gastric cancer cells was attributed to the interference of proteins associated with cancer cell survivals and proliferation and exhibiting the genes that suppress tumor growth, promote cancer cell degradation and program cancer cell death, observed by the Western blotting.

Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders, said, ":[6]-gingerol enhanced radiosensitivity of GC cells, and that the mechanisms involved at least G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis induction".

Taken altogether, ginger processed [6] gingerol may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of a large size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Mastitis and Lactation Mastitis, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara sagrada processed bioactive compounds emodin and aloin may have a strong inhibited effect against the onset of mastitis according to studies.

Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue, affecting mostly the mothers who are breastfeeding.
Most cases of mastitis are caused by a bacterial infection such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Most common risk factors of lactation mastitis are blocked duct(s) and restriction from a tight bra, attachment difficulties, and nipple pain during a feed were the significant predictors for mastitis in the first time breastfeeding mothers, according to the Journal of Human Lactation

Most common symptoms of mastitis are breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. Some patients may also experience symptoms of fever and chills.

Most cases of mastitis are treated with antibiotics, the medicine may be effective but it has found epidemiologically to induce some side effects.

If you are currently taking one of them, please make sure you know all the side effect for preventive measure.

According to the study of 946 breastfeeding women from Michigan and Nebraska for the first 3 months postpartum or until they stopped breastfeeding to describe mastitis incidence, mastitis treatment, and any associations between mastitis occurrence and hypothesized host characteristics and behaviors.researchers found that mastitis is a very common condition in lactation women.

Telephone interviewed by at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks postpartum or until they ceased breastfeeding,  a total of 9.5% reported provider-diagnosed lactation mastitis at least once during the 12-week period, with 64% diagnosed via telephone.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, it's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

Researchers on finding herbal medicine for the treatment of mastitis examined the Emodin, the major active compound of herbal Cascara Sagrada and Chinese herb Radix et Rhizoma Rhei effect on mastitis.

The mouse model of mastitis was induced by injection of LPS through the duct of the mammary gland. Pretreatment of emodin intraperitoneally with the dose of 1, 2, and 4 mg/kg respectively 1h before and 12h after induction of LPS showed a significant reduction of levels of proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress makers and neutrophils, a type of white blood cell.

Emodin influenced nuclear factor kappa-B signal transduction pathway, a protein associated with the controls of transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival. by inhibiting activation of (nuclear transcription factor-kappaB (NF-κB) p65 involved)  a protein complex involved the immune response and (degradation inhibitor of NF-κB α (IκBα), and degradation of the cellular response to inflammation.

Furthermore, the efficacy of emodin also attributed to the activation of the signaling pathways associated with the cellular responses to environmental stress and stimuli and the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Researcher wrote in the conclusion of the study, "Emodin could exert beneficial effects on experimental mastitis induced by LPS and may represent a novel treatment strategy for mastitis".

Moreover, in order to investigate the effects of herbal Cascara Sagrada and (Mastitis), researchers examined the herbal Cascara Sagrada and (Mastitis) therapeutic potential photogenically derived aloin, another major compound of the herb, mediated nanosilver particles (AAgNPs), prepared by reduction of silver nitrate with aloin, in Staphylococcus aureus-induced murine mastitis.

The study included a total of 40 female mice divided into five groups of eight animals each.
* Group I served as lactating control,

* Groups II-V inoculated with 20 μl of 24 h broth culture of S. aureus containing 4.0 × 105 cfu/quarter under ketamine anaesthesia. After 6 h post inoculation, and

* Groups III and IV received 20 μl of aloin nanosilver (AAgNPs) through intramammary and intraperitoneal routes, respectively.

* Group V received antibiotic cefepime at 1 mg/kg body weight through the intraperitoneal route.

After 18 hours of post-treatment, injection of the compound showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 21.8 ng/ml against S. aureus.

Nanosilver particles (AAgNPs) showed a significant reduction of 98% of the poly-morpho nuclear cell, a category of white blood cells in the mediation of the phase of inflammation, compared to only 50% in an antibiotic.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundantly bioactive compounds emodin and aloin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of mastitis.

Herbal Cayenne, the Best Anti Non Allergic Rhinitis Kitchen Spice

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural herbal medicine or kitchen spice for the prevention and treatment of nonallergic rhinitis, according to the studies.

Nonallergic rhinitis is a condition inducing a set of symptoms that resemble nasal allergies and hayfever without unknown causes.

Chronic forms of rhinitis occurred in the absence of any detectable specific IgE against relevant aeroallergens.

According to the US statistic, approximately 19 million Americans suffer from nonallergic rhinitis compared to 58 million people suffer from allergic rhinitis.

Nonallergic rhinitis can be classified to different subgroups, including drug‐induced rhinitis, occupational rhinitis, hormonal rhinitis (including pregnancy rhinitis), gustatory rhinitis, senile rhinitis, and idiopathic rhinitis (IR).

Although there are a number of factors associated with the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested that aging may be one of the major risk factors that cause the development of the syndrome.

Dr. Jayant M Pinto, the lead scientist at the University of Chicago in the concern of nonallergic rhinitis affects the functional and emotional impairment and the quality of life (QoL) of elderly patients wrote, "With this expansion of the number of older adults, physicians will face the common complaint of rhinitis with increasing frequency. Nasal symptoms pose a significant burden on the health of older people and require attention to improve the quality of life".

And, "Several mechanisms likely underlie the pathogenesis of rhinitis in these patients, including inflammatory conditions and the influence of aging on nasal physiology, with the potential for interaction between the two".

Most common symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis include postnasal drip, runny nose sneezing, and stuffy nose.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural compound for the treatment of nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), examined the effects and safety of ICX72 or Sinus Buster, a proprietary homeopathic preparation of Capsicum annum and Eucalyptol, versus placebo.

The herbal formula was administered continuously over 2 weeks in subjects with a significant component of nonallergic rhinitis (NAR).

ICX72 subjects exhibited significant differences in changes from baseline to end of the study, according to the tested assay compared to placebo.

The formula had an average time to first relief of 52.6 seconds (P < .01), and improvement in nasal congestion, sinus pain, sinus pressure, and headache at 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes, persisting at 60 minutes for nasal congestion and sinus pain.

ICX72 treatment subjects experienced no rebound congestion or impaired olfaction at the end of the study.

Futhermore, in a total of 30 patients randomized into two different treatment regimens, researchers divided the participants into one group received capsaicin five times on the first day at 1-h intervals followed by a placebo dummy once every second or third day for a total of five treatments 2 weeks after the capsaicin application (group A) and the other group (B) received the placebo dummy five times on the first day followed by capsaicin once every second or third day for a total of five treatments 2 weeks after the placebo application.

According to the visual analog scale scores for overall nasal symptoms, rhinorrhea and nasal blockage showed a significant decrease after the start of treatment in both groups, with a significantly steeper decrease in group A.

There is also a significant reduction in cold dry air responsiveness up to 9 months after therapy in both groups, reflecting a decrease in nasal hyperreactivity.

There are no significant changes in safety data (smell, blood pressure, heart rate).

Researchers at the end of the experiment said, " intranasal capsaicin seems safe to use and that five treatments of capsaicin on a single day is at least as effective as five treatments of capsaicin in 2 weeks".

Taken altogether, herbal cayenne may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of nonallergic rhinitis with no side effects.

Herbal Chamomile, the Best Hepato-protective Herbal Remedy, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Chamomile processed bioactive compounds may have a profound and potential effect on protecting the liver against the onset of liver disease, according to studies.

Liver diseases are a class of condition associated with the abnormal function of the liver due to liver damage or injury.

Hepatoprotection, on the other hand, is an ability to inhibit all causable agents that manifest the liver damage such as free radicals and toxins including ethanol, acetaminophen, and carbon tetrachloride.

Symptoms of liver disease include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, itchy skin dark urine color pale stool color, or bloody stool. If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

According to the statistic, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are common disease-related causes of death in the U.S. Approximately 31,000 people in the U.S. die each year and over 3.5 million people in the U.S. are chronically hepatitis C virus carriers.

The causes of liver disease are debatable. However certain risk factors such as the increase of age, genetic proposition or acquired genetic change, excessive alcohol drinking, autoimmune disease long-term exposure to toxins and viral infections are found to exacerbate the onset of liver disease.
Although there are many factors associated with liver disease, some researchers suggested that obesity is the most prevalent risk factor which causes nonalcoholic liver disease in the Western world.

Dr. Elisa Fabbrini and colleagues in the concern of the widespread of nonalcoholic liver disease in obese population wrote, "Obesity is associated with an increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Steatosis, the hallmark feature of NAFLD, occurs when the rate of hepatic fatty acid uptake from plasma and de novo fatty acid synthesis is greater than the rate of fatty acid oxidation and export (as triglyceride within VLDL)".

And, "It is likely that abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism, in conjunction with adipose tissue, hepatic, and systemic inflammation, are key factors involved in the development of insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and other cardiometabolic risk factors associated with NAFLD".

The results strongly indicated the correlation between obesity and the risk of NAFLD.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

On finding a potential liver protective effect of chamomile, researchers examined the effects of polyphenols isolated from the herbal medicine on increased sphingolipid turnover in the liver which has been found to associate with an elevation of free radical production and state of chronic inflammation at old age.

In the animal model, injection of [14C]palmitate-pre-labeled sphingomyelin (SM) and ceramide were used to study the sphingolipids turnover. Before application of chamomile, the ceramide levels were higher in the liver and hepatocytes of 24- and 27-28-month-old animals compared to that of 3-month-old Wistar rats.

The administration of flavonoids to old rats decreased the elevated neutral and acid SMases activities and ceramide mass.

However, additional flavonoids showed no effect both the lipid content in the liver of adult animals and ceramide conversion to the sphingosine or SM.

The results suggested chamomile exerts the liver protective effects by playing a key role in the flavonoid-induced decrease of ceramide levels in the liver of old rats, without alternating the lipid contents of the liver.

Additional examination of the ceramide generation in the early event in the apoptotic response to liver oxidative stress, researchers team showed that before injection of flavonoids isolated from chamomile, CCl4 administration to the rats enlarged ceramide mass as well as neutral sphingomyelinase (SMase) activity.

Injection of the isolated compounds affect the sphingolipid metabolism and reduce the elevated ceramide level in the aged liver in rats treated by CCl14.

In the depth analysis, researchers found flavonoid administration to the rats normalizes the elevated ceramide content in the damaged liver via neutral SMase inhibition and ceramidase activation.

Dr. Babenko NA and colleagues wrote in the final report, " Flavonoids normalized activities of key enzymes of sphingolipid turnover (neutral SMase and ceramidase) and ceramide contents in the damaged liver and liver cells, and stabilized the hepatocyte membranes".

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile may be considered a functional remedy for the protection of liver caused by the increased sphingolipid turnover in the aging population, pending to larger sample size and multi-centers human study.

Ginger, the Anti Liver Cancer Functional Remedy with No Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent spice which processes potential to protect the liver against the onset of cancer, some studies suggested.

The liver is a large organ in human with the unique function in filtering the blood from the digestive tract, before passing to the rest of the body.

Liver cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the liver due to the alternation of cell DNA.

At the early stage of liver cancer, most patients do not experience any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage patients may experience symptoms of jaundice, abdominal sever pain and white, chalky stools accompanied by general cancer symptoms such as weight loss, loss of appetite and gastrointestinal discomforts.

If you are having some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of liver cancer.

In most cases, at this stage, liver cancer cell also can induce secondary metastasis through lymph and blood, leading to cancers of colon, pancreas, stomach, lung, and breast.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately, 42,220 new cases, including 30,610 in men and 11,610 in women of liver cancer were diagnosed. The disease causes the death of 30,200 people, including 20,540 men and 9,660 women.

Liver cancer diagnosed at an early stage has a 5-year survival rate of 31%. Only 43% of patients are diagnosed at 0 and 1.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of liver cancer, hepatitis infection is considered a major cause of the disease.

Dr. Marc Ringehan and colleagues in the examine hepatitis in risk of liver cancer said, "Hepatitis B and C viruses are a global health problem causing acute and chronic infections that can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)".

And, "The majority of viral-associated HCC cases develop in subjects with liver cirrhosis; however, hepatitis B virus infection can promote HCC development without prior end-stage liver disease. Thus, understanding the role of hepatitis B and C viral infections in HCC development is essential for the future design of treatments and therapies for this cancer".

These results strongly suggested if you are hepatitis carrier, your risk of liver cancer increases substantially.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of liver cancer investigated 6-shogaol and 6-gingerol, two active compounds in ginger (Zingiber officinale) anti-invasive activity against highly metastatic hepatoma cells.

6-gingerol and 6-shogaol regulate the transcription. involved cell proliferation and inhibited differentiation.

6-gingerol at a concentration ≥ 10 μM directly decreased expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) in stimulating tumor invasion and development of metastases.

But the 6-shogaol at the concentration ≥ 10 μM -mediated decreased uPA was accompanied by the inhibiting tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis.

Futhermore, the efficacy of anti-liver cancer of both compounds was attributed to significantly inhibit the phosphorylation of proteins associated with cellular processes and activate proteins involved anti-proliferation and transcription of DNA, cytokine production.

These results suggested that 6-Shogaol and 6-gingerol effectively inhibit invasion and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma through complex and diverse molecular mechanisms.

In order to reveal additional information about ginger anti-liver cancer activity, researchers examine gingerol, a bioactive compound isolated from ginger for the potential chemo-modulatory effects in addition to potential vascular protective roles with doxorubicin.

Shogaol and 4'-methoxygingerol showed considerably cytotoxic effects against HepG2 cells, with IC50 values ranging from 3.1 to 19.4 µM.

Furthermore, gingerol significantly enhanced the cytotoxic profile of doxorubicin against HepG₂ and Huh7, cells decreasing its IC50s by 10- and 4-fold, respectively.

Doxorubicin alone induced cell accumulation at S-phase and G₂/M-phase, while in combination with gingerol it significantly induced cell cycle arrest at the G₂/M-phase.

Dr.Al-Abbasi FA and colleagues in the final report wrote, "gingerol protected from DOX-induced vascular damage, apparently not through a ROS scavenging mechanism".

The findings strongly suggested that gingerol not only exerts a significantly liver protective effect but also improves the doxorubicin efficiency and reduces chemo side effects.

Taken altogether, ginger processed abundantly bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Calendula, Protects Lipid, Protein and Cells DNA Against Damage Caused by Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of the diseases associated with the expression of oxidative stress, according to studies.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the oxidation induced by free radical.
Free radicals are unstable and high reactive molecules with a single electron in the outer ring.

In order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other molecules, leading to a chain reaction that cannot be stopped until the electrons on the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by either overexpression of free radical or low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body.

In other words, the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants enzymes is the major cause of the onset of oxidative stress, leading to the damage of lipid, DNA, and protein in the cells of the host.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the development of the condition, some researchers suggested that smoking is one of the preventable and major risks in the induction of the onset of oxidative stress.

Dr. Isik B in the comparison of the risk of oxidative stress in smokers and nonsmokers wrote, "Smoking may enhance oxidative stress not only through the production of reactive oxygen radicals in smoke but also through the weakening of the antioxidant defense systems".

And, ": The serum MDA levels were significantly higher (p < .05) and serum PON1 activities were significantly lower (p < .001) in smokers than in nonsmokers".

Where serum malondialdehyde (MDA) is an oxidative stress marker and paraoxonase (PON1) is an HDL-associated enzyme which protects the HDL against oxidation.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

Researchers on finding a herbal medicine which process a high amount of antioxidants examined the
Calendula officinalis flower extract effects against experimentally induced thermal burns made on the shaven back of the rats under anesthesia in rats.

The animals then are treated orally with different doses of the flower extracts (20 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg/kg body weight).

Injection of the extracts showed significant improvement in healing when compared with the control untreated animals.

The wound healing is observed by the speeding up through the increase of the concentration of collagen contents in the treated group.

The acute phase proteins associated with the oxidative activity was increased due to burning were found to be decreased significantly in 200 mg/kg body weight extract treated animals.

The antioxidant defense mechanism decreased in the liver during burn injury, was found to be enhanced in treated animals.

The lipid peroxidation was significantly lowered in the treated group, accompanied by a decrease of the tissue damage marker compared to control animals.

Furthermore, in the investigation of the Flower extract of C. officinalis L. protective effect against CCl4 induced acute hepatotoxicity and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity, pretreatment of the flower extract at 100 and 250 mg/kg body weight exerted a significant reduction of the tissue and oxidative stress makers compared to untreated group.

The extract displayed a liver protective effect observed by the decreased levels of lipid peroxidation the marker of membrane damage and the total bilirubin content in the liver.

Moreover, the herbal extract also demonstrated kidney protective effects observed by the reduced levels of the kidney function markers, urea, and creatinine which were significantly increased in cisplatin-treated animals.

Additionally, the cisplatin-induced myelosuppression was ameliorated by the extract pretreatment, through enhancing the levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase and glutathione.

Dr. Preethi KC, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Possible mechanism of action of the flower extract may be due to its antioxidant activity and reduction of oxygen radicals".

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a functional remedy for the protection of our body against disease associated with oxidative stress, through its antioxidant activity.
