Phytochemical Sulforaphane (Dithiolthiones) Inhibits the Onset of Prostate cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound which processes a potential for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, with no side effects, according to studies.

Prostate cancer is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the tissue of the prostate gland. It is a slow growth disease which takes years to develop and prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

The cause of prostate cancer is a result of the alternation of DNA of the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate. Researchers do not know what causes the change of cell DNA and they can not explain why people with the same health conditions, ethnicity and family history, some are susceptible to the disease onset while others do not.

However, researchers do know that the increase in age, especially after age 50, as more than 80% of prostate cancers diagnosed in men who are 65 or older, is one of the major factors associated with the disease.

Other risk factors of prostate cancer include high fat, high processed carbohydrate diet, and lifestyle. And, men who are overweight or obese are at greater risk of ultimately developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

However, most people with some of the risk factors have never developed prostate cancer. Some researchers suggested that men who have a history of an enlarged prostate may be at the increased risk of prostate cancer.

Dr. Saiful Miah, the lead scientist in the examining the risk of developing prostate cancer of men suffering BPH wrote "BPH and PCa can be linked together at a molecular and cellular level on genetic, hormonal, and inflammatory platforms suggesting that these prostatic diseases have common pathophysiological driving factors. Epidemiological studies are weighted towards the presence of BPH having a greater risk for a man to develop PCa in his lifetime".

Most common symptoms of late stage of prostate cancer include, burning sensation or painful urination,  difficulty urinating, or trouble starting and stopping while urinating, more frequent urges to urinate at night, decreased the flow of urine stream, particularly, blood in urine (hematuria) if the tumor break the nearby blood vessel, loss of bladder control if the tumor has affected the bladder tissue and localized pain, if the tumor has pressed on the nearby nerve cells.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of prostate cancer.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

On finding a natural compound or whole food for the treatment of prostate cancer, researchers in the cancer team at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and School of Medicine investigated the anti-prostate cancer effect of sulforaphane (SFN).

Injection of sulforaphane (SFN) showed to decrease the incidence or burden of early-stage prostate cancer. In other words, the chemical compound protected the prostate gland against cell alternation to initiate the disease onset.

SFN treatment exerted a cytoprotective autophagy in cultured human prostate cancer cells.  A used combination with chloroquine (CQ), the compound reduced the weight of the prostate compared to control. The average size of the metastatic lymph node was also lower by about 42% in the SFN + CQ group than in control.

Interestingly, the SFN + CQ combination was not superior to SFN alone. Furthermore, the SFN + CQ combination injection not only showed prevention of prostate cancer and metastasis but also decreased cell proliferation, increased apoptosis and cancer cell degradation.

In advanced androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC) represented by the DU145 and PC3 cell lines, compared the effect of TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and sulforaphane (SFN), researchers showed that sulforaphane exerted similar effect on apoptosis-resistant cancer stem cells (CSCs) properties compared to TRAIL, though the agents acted synergistically when applied in combination.

In vivo, tumor engraftment and tumor growth were strongly inhibited by sulforaphane (SFN),, without inducing any side effects.

In the comparison of the effect of sulforaphane(SFN) and 3,3'-diindolylmethane(DIM) in normal prostate epithelial cells and prostate cancer cells, researchers at the Oregon State University found that SFN and DIM reverse many of the cancer-associated methylation alterations, including aberrantly methylated genes that are dysregulated or highly involved in cancer progression.

Taken altogether, sulforaphane(SFN) use alone may be considered a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of prostate cancer.

Phytochemical Allicin, the Potent Anti Pancreatic Cancer Supplement

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a single ingredient isolated from garlic for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Cancer of pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a medical condition of a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas, as the cells have become cancerous and divided uncontrollably.

Most pancreatic cancers start in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices. Pancreatic cancers originated in the glandular tissue account for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.

At the advanced stage, cancerous cells from the pancreas may travel a distance away to exhibit secondary metastasis.

In Canada, the 5-year net survival including all stages for pancreatic cancer is 8%. In other words,  92% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die after 5 years.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, every year, approximately over an estimated 55,000 adults (29,000 men and 26,000 women) in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The incidence rates are 25% higher in black people, compared to white people.

Researchers do not know the causes of the disease. However, age, gender, ethnicity, smoking habit, poor diet and a certain medical condition such as diabetes are associated with the prevalent risks of pancreatic cancer.

Some researchers suggested that pancreatic cancer is also found in high numbers in obese patients and patient with family history of the disease, compared to others.

Dr. Silverman DT in the assessment of risk factors for pancreatic cancer, in a population-based case control study of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in Atlanta (GA), Detroit (MI), and ten New Jersey counties from August 1986 through April 1989, including 526 incident cases and 2,153 population controls. wrote, "elevated body mass index and caloric intake had increased risk".

And, " A three-fold risk of pancreatic cancer among first-degree relatives of affected individuals was apparent. An increased risk also was associated with a family history of colon, endometrial, ovary, and breast cancer, suggesting a possible link to hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer".

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

On finding the natural compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the efficacy of combined treatment of the recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) and allicin on pancreatic cancer.

The study includes a total of 60 C57/BL6 nude mice pancreatic cancer xenograft models randomized assigned into four groups of 15 mice per group: control group, allicin treatment group, rIL-2 treatment group, combined treatment with allicin and rIL-2 group.

Mice in each group were treated with saline, rIL-2, allicin, or combination of rIL-2 and allicin by weekly i.v injection for four weeks.

Treatment with allicin and rIL-2 group significantly suppressed the xenograft growth and prolonged survival time, compared to other groups. Truly, combined therapy group exerted the most amounts of apoptotic cells.

The combined treatment group anti-pancreatic cancer efficacy was attributed to the activation of levels of CD4+T, in stimulating other immune cells, in killing cancer cells and natural killer cells.

Furthermore, allicin and rIL-2 also increased the levels of Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a cytokine produced by a variety of cells involved in the immune response against cancer cells, compared to other groups.

Dr. the lead researcher wrote in the final paper, "Combined treatment with allicin and rIL-2 resulted in suppression of tumor growth and prolonged survival time possibly through activation of CD4+T, CD8+T and NK cell".

Taken altogether, allicin isolated from the garlic may be considered a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of pancreatic cancer.

However, intake of allicin in a form of supplement should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of overdose toxicity.

Localized Honey, the Best for the Treatment of Allergies with No Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of allergies, according to studies.

Allergies are a faulty reaction of the immune systematic responses against harmful substances that enter the body.

Symptoms and diseases associated with allergy include sinus swelling, seasonal and returning allergies, hay fever and nasal allergies.

Believe or not, Penicillin, antibiotic medicine is the most common allergy trigger in drug allergies.  10 percent of people are allergic after using the medicine.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, more than 50 million Americans have experienced various types of allergies each year and 15 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.9 million children under age 18.

In other words, 1 in 13 children suffers from a food allergy. About 30 percent of children with food allergies are allergic to more than one food.

The findings strongly suggested that foods are the most common and major cause of the allergic onset.

Dr. Ruchi S. Gupta and colleagues in the allergic team in examining the food allergies in children wrote, "Overall, estimated current FA prevalence was 7.6%,.The most prevalent allergens were peanut (2.2%), milk (1.9%), shellfish (1.3%), and tree nut (1.2%)".

And, "Among food-allergic children, 42.3% reported ≥1 severe FA and 39.9% reported multiple FA. Furthermore, 19.0% reported ≥1 FA-related emergency department visit in the previous year and 42.0% reported ≥1-lifetime FA-related emergency department visit, whereas 40.7% had a current epinephrine autoinjector prescription.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of allergies examined the honey effects in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR).

The prospective randomized placebo-controlled study included 40 AR patients divided equally into a case group and a control group. All the subjects received a daily dose of 10 mg of loratadine for 4 weeks.

The case group then ingested 1 g/kg body weight of honey daily in separate doses for the 4-week period. The control group ingested the same dose of honey-flavored corn syrup as a placebo.

According to the AR symptoms scored at the start, week 4, and week 8 of the study, at week 4, both groups showed progressive improvement in the symptoms, however, at week 8, only the case group showed continuous improvement in the symptom score.

The ingested honey group showed a significant improvement in individual AR symptoms after week 8 and the efficacy in reducing the symptoms persisted for a month after the cessation of the honey treatment.

The results suggested that honey processed certain chemical compounds that were not found in the corn syrup for the treatment of AR.

Some researchers suggested that long-term intake of raw honey can help to ameliorate allergy symptoms by regularly exposing to pollen, similarly to the allergy injection in desensitizing pollen-program.

If this result is true then only local honey can process the anti-AR symptoms compared to honey unlocalized pollen.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of AR symptoms, regardless of the types of honey, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry May Process Anti Breast Cancer Potency with No Side Effects, According to Medical Literature

By Kyle J. Norton

Bilberry may be the next potential and therapeutic treatment of breast cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Breast cancer is the chronic condition characterized by irregular cells growth in the breast tissue caused by the alternation of DNA.

The causes of breast cancer are unknown, As of today, researchers cannot explain why people with the same health conditions in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of breast cancer while others do not.

According to the statistics, 1 in 8 U.S. women, representing 12.4 % of all women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

Believe or not, In 2018, approximately 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosis at the early stage is 100%. Therefore, women at a higher risk of breast cancer should examine their breast at least once a month for preventive measure.

Most cases of breast cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

Women with breast cancer may experience symptoms of lump, swelling of all or part of a breast, skin irritation or dimpling, breast or nipple pain,  nipple retraction, redness, and scaliness.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor as soon as possible to rule out the possibility of breast cancer.

In North America, some researchers suggested that obesity may have some strong impact on the risk of breast cancer onset.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead scientist in the study of "Obesity and adverse breast cancer risk and outcome: Mechanistic insights and strategies for intervention", wrote "Obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages".

And, " the effects of obesity to increase local and circulating proinflammatory cytokines, promote tumor angiogenesis and stimulate the most malignant cancer stem cell population to drive cancer growth, invasion, and metastasis".

The results clearly suggested that if you are obese, your risk of breast cancer is increased substantially, compared to non-obese individuals.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of breast cancer examined the bilberry effect on the MCF7 human breast cancer cells.

Bilberry extract inhibited cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent fashion with a 50% inhibitory concentration of 0.3-0.4 mg/mL.

At this concentration, the natural compound also concerts the induction of apoptotic cell death of the cancer cells with no apparent effect on the microtubule that provides structure and shape to the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells or actin cytoskeletons.

In other words, bilberry extract induced cancer cell apoptosis was not through cell cycle arrest at this concentration.

However, at the higher extract concentrations (0.5-0.9 mg/mL), the extract did cause an increase in the fraction of cells at the G(2)/M phase of the cell cycle.

Further differentiation of the cell death, bilberry extract at 0.3-0.4 mg/mL did not appreciably inhibit microtubule polymerization in vitro, but significant inhibition of polymerization (approximately 30%) did occur at higher extract concentrations (0.5-1 mg/mL).

Moreover, researchers found that the efficacy of bilberry against breast cancer cell was attributed not by the expression of anthocyanins but all phytochemicals in the extracts.

Dr. Nguyen V and colleagues wrote in the final report, " (Bilberry extract) inhibits proliferation of and induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells at its lowest effective concentrations via a mechanism that does not involve action on microtubules or on mitosis.

And, "At somewhat higher concentrations the extract modifies microtubule organization in cells and causes accumulation of cells at mitosis by a direct action on microtubules".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Protects Us Against Heart Disease, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Artichoke may be used as a natural and herbal remedy for the treatment of heart disease with no side effects, according to studies.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

Most common risk factors associated with heart disease are aging, family history with heart disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and stress epidemiologically.

However, most people with some of the above risk factors have never developed heart disease. Symptoms of heart disease completely depend on the infected location.

Some researchers suggested that by making a change in lifestyle accompanied by moderate physical activity such as walking, the risk of heart disease can be prevented.

The American College of Cardiology wrote in the article of Heart Disease: Lifestyle Changes to Lower Risk. "Start slowly, and go at a pace you can manage. Try to do at least 2½ hours of moderate exercise a week. One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week".

"Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat, such as adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of saturated fat, sodium, and sugar"

"Getting active and eating a healthy diet can help you lose extra weight and  quit smoking"

Finally, the article continued, "Even though you are taking medicine, it is always important to make lifestyle changes that keep your heart and your body healthy".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae, native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases has been a dream of many scientists. Researchers at the joint study led by the IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana, examined the effects of vegetables, including artichoke on CVD.

The joint study included a total of 38 subjects at risk of CVD. After, a week of the run-in period, participants were randomly assigned to one of the following 4-week interventions: low vegetable consumption (800 g of vegetables/week) or high vegetable consumption (4200 g of vegetables/week).

According to the assays that record immunological, and antioxidant markers, leukocyte and lymphocyte expression of the gut-homing β7 integrin, there were no significant changes detected in clinical, immunological, and antioxidant markers in biological samples, except for an increase in white blood cell count for the low vegetable consumption group.

Immune system's innate and adaptive immune responses play an essential role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory expression.

Vegetable consumption group exerts a CVD protective effect in modulating markers of immune function and antioxidant status in patients with CVD. In healthy individuals, intake of vegetables does not induce a change of both antioxidant and inflammatory markers associated with immune function, particularly in nonsmoking men.

These results strongly suggested that vegetables modulate the function of the immune system according to the needs of the body.

In other to reveal more information about artichoke anti CVD activity, Dr. Rondanelli M and colleagues at the University of Pavia investigated the artichoke extracts on the cardiovascular disease on both animals and man.

Injection of artichoke not only reduced the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream through its hypolipidemic activity but also inhibited the expression of high blood glucose and free radicals through the antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity.

The results indicated artichoke reduced the risk and progression of cardiovascular disease by improving the production of antioxidant enzymes against oxidative stress in the initiation of low-grade inflammation, a hallmark of CVD.

Futhermore, artichoke also decreases the levels of blood cholesterol and glucose, the cluster conditions associated with the risk CVD, epidemiologically.

Taken altogether, artichoke which processes anti cardiovascular diseases activity through several mechanisms may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane, the Potential Anti Colon Cancer Bioactive Compound, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM may have a profound and positive effect in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, according to studies.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. It is one of most slow-growing cancer that takes years to develop. Therefore, most patients in the early stage of cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, cancer can cause severe rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal pain due to the larger size tumor that has pressed on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessels.

According to the statistics, the risk of CRC increases with age; the median age at diagnosis for colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women.

The data of colon provided by CDC showed that every year, 97,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed.

Besides sharing the common symptoms with other types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, and tiredness, patients with colon cancer may also experience symptoms of change of bowel movement, rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas or pain.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Although there are many risk factors involved the onset of colon cancer, some researchers suggested aging may be one of the most prevalent risks.

Donna Myers on the examination of the time that needed for a polyp or growth of tissue in the lining  to cancer and the percentage of colon cancer cases in people age 50 or older, said, " By the time colorectal cancer is diagnosed, it has often been growing for several years, first as a non-cancerous polyp and later as cancer. Research indicates that by age 50, one out of four people has polyps".

The results strongly suggested that if you are at the age of 50 and a higher risk of colon cancer, you may want to have a colonoscopy done every 3 years.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

Researchers on finding the natural compounds for the treatment of colon cancer examined the two anti-cancer agents (doxycycline or 3,3'-diindolylmethane) on HCT-116 and HT-29 colon cancer cell lines.

Injection of the 2 compounds resulted in profound changes in the intracellular content of several lncRNAs (by up to 100 times secreted by tumors into the bloodstream.

The results strongly suggested that by examining the levels of lncRNAs colon cancer expression can be monitored through tumor relapse and metastasis.

In order to reveal more information about 3the Sulindac (SU; 320 ppm) effect on colon cancer, researchers examined two natural compounds, 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM; 250 ppm) and curcumin (CUR; 2000 ppm), with or without lower doses of SU could affect carcinogenesis.

Colon tumors were significantly reduced by SU 320 ppm (62 % reduction over Controls), by DIM and CUR without or with SU 80 and 160 ppm (50, 53 and 58 % reduction, respectively) but not by SU 80 ppm alone.

Futhermore, total tumors (colon and small intestine) were found to reduce substantially by SU (80 and 320 ppm) and by DIM and CUR.

Apoptosis in the normal mucosa was significantly increased by SU 320 ppm and slightly increased by DIM and CUR with or without SU.

The combination of SU with DIM or Cur also caused a slight reduction in Survivin-Birc5 expression observed with all the treatments compared to controls.

Where Survivin-Birc5 protein is found to inhibit caspases associated with the blocking of cancer cell death. The protein is highly expressed in most cancers associated with a poor clinical outcome.

The results strongly reaffirmed the anti-colon cancer activity of DIM and CUR combination.

Taken altogether, DIM used alone or combined with another bioactive compound may be considered a supplement for the prevention and comn=bined with primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of DIM as o form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Phytic acid, the Potential Anti Diabetes Bioactive Compound, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural resource for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to the studies.

Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The diabetes is either caused by cells in pancreas died off due to the immune system mistakenly attacked the sell in the pancreas or receptor sites clogged up as a result of the excess fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Researchers do not know why the immune system attacks its own tissue. Either they can explain people follow a lifelong intake of the Western diet, only some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

There are many risk factors such as age, ethnicity, family history, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, being overweight or obese and sedentary lifestyle. associated with the onset of the condition, epidemiologically. However, many people with some of the risk factors have never developed diabetes.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy diet with high amounts of saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods and low amounts of fruits and vegetable as that of the Western diet is the most common risk factor of diabetes in the Western world.

Dr. David Hefner, in the concern of the Western diet in risk of diabetes, wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes".

And, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods".

The results strongly suggested the risk of diabetes can be decreased with the change of diet pattern, from the Western diet to a healthy diet with high amounts of fruits and vegetables.

If you experience some of the belove symptoms such as increased thirst that can not be resolved by intake of liquid, frequent urination, extreme hunger, and unexplained weight loss, you may have type 2 diabetes. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.

On finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers examined the effect of the phytic acid supplement on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Diabetic rats were fed rodent chow with or without phytic acid supplementation for thirty days. According to the assay used for the experiment, phytic acid supplement treated group showed an increase in average food intake and a decrease in body weight gain compared to the diabetic and normal control groups.

Compared to other groups, phytic acid supplement treated group also exerted a downtrend in intestinal amylase activity. The spike in random blood glucose in the treatment group also lower compared to others.

Furthermore, the treatment group also displays reduced serum triglycerides and increased total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels and levels of serum alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase activities, the indication of improvement of insulin sensitivity.

Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines also lower in phytic acid supplement treated group compared to other groups.

Dr.Omoruyi FO, the lead scientist at the end of the study, wrote, "phytic acid supplementation may be beneficial in the management of diabetes mellitus".

Additionally, researchers randomly assigned six groups of rats fed to test the anti-diabetes of phytic acid, for 3 weeks as follows:
* Groups 1 and 2 were fed formulated diets supplemented with zinc or without zinc respectively.

* Groups 3 and 4 were fed formulated diets supplemented with zinc plus phytic acid extracted from sweet potato (Ipomea batatas) or commercial phytic acid respectively.

* Groups 5 and 6 were fed formulated diets supplemented with a phytic acid extract from sweet potato or commercial phytic acid respectively.

At the final day of the experiment, researchers found that phytic acid extract consumption from sweet potato and commercial phytic acid plus zinc supplement lowered blood glucose levels.

However, phytic acid supplementation showed no significant decrease in the activity of pyruvate kinase involved in the insulin stimulation of this enzyme activity, compared to the group fed formulated diets.

Groups fed phytic extract from sweet potato also exerted a significant increase in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the promotion of pancreatic beta-cell function, compared to the other groups.

Taken altogether, phytochemical phytic acid may be used for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes.
